County looks at 50 cuts, hike in premiums By Jim Fields jfields@mechlocal.com Staff reductions of 50 positions and an increase of 15 percent in the cost of health insurance premiums for all employees were two of the cost-cutting measures outlined by Hanover County administrator Cecil R. “Rhu” Harris Jr. last Wednesday when he made the initial presentation of the county’s proposed Fiscal Year

Budget changes cut 88.4 school jobs By Jim Fields jfields@mechlocal.com Almost 90 positions are being eliminated and funding for the early retirement program is being cut by more than 50 percent in the Fiscal Year 2012-2013 budget approved on Feb. 21 by the Hanover County School Board. In a 6-1 vote, with Mechanicsville District representative Glenn T. Millican Jr. voting against the proposal, the School Board accepted the $191.6 million budget. Chairman John F. Axselle III described the budget as “anything but happy,” as members agreed to eliminate 88.4 full-time positions and make

2013 budget to the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. The FY13 proposed budget is $367.4 million, a 6.1 percent decrease from the current year. The county’s General Fund budget is $199.4 million, a 1.6 percent decrease from the current year. “We expect to handle the staff reductions through a combination of attrition, retirement and reductions in force,” Harris said. “Over 40

the cut in the early retirement program. This was the first budget presented by Dr. Jamelle S. Wilson, who became superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools in May. “We expect the position reductions to be achieved through attrition,” Wilson said. “We tried to do the best things possible to preserve the interest of the students.” “Throughout the budget process,” she added, “I was constantly asking myself am I doing what I’m supposed to be doing on behalf of the students.”

The cuts were made to balance the budget and overcome a $13.96 million deficit. By approving the financial plan, the board will start the FY 2013-2014 budget process with a $6 million deficit. Of the positions eliminated, 52.4 were instructional staff. Cutting those positions and realigning staff due to declining enrollment increases the pupil-to-teacher ratio by 0.5 in elementary and middle schools and by one in high schools. With the cuts included in see SCHOOLS, pg. 8

of those positions were funded in FY12 and will result in budget savings, while the remaining positions had been unfunded in prior budgets and are being formally eliminated. We expect the recently approved early retirement-voluntary separation program to identify employees choosing to leave and mitigate any involuntary reductions in force.” Harris said the Sheriff ’s Office and Fire/EMS will continue to have current front-line staff-

ing resources available to provide for a safe and secure community and there would be no reduction in staff in those areas. To balance the budget, he said a $5.8 million shortfall had to be overcome. “Since personnel make up 70 percent of the budget, it has to bear a major burden of the cuts,” Harris said. see COUNTY, pg. 5

It doesn’t matter whether your misery started yesterday, or decades past, it can twist your senses and emotions at any time. Battlefield Park kindergarten students observe 100th day of school.

Hanover schools take part in January Mentor Month Initiative In an unprecedented regional effort, the Greater Richmond Chamber and superintendents from seven local public school systems recently gathered for a joint press conference proclaiming a regionwide initiative: “January Mentor Month.” This month-long, cross-jurisdictional undertaking called attention to the significance of business role models and volunteer engagement in the schools to support a thriving workforce. Business representatives discussed the rationale for, and experience with, business community involvement in mentoring and volunteering in the schools. The news conference was held on Jan. 10 at the Scott House on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. Data released in March 2011 by the Alliance for Excellent Education (AEE) revealed that in the Richmond region, an estimated 5,400 students dropped out of the Class of 2010. Cutting this number in half would add $34 million in earnings for each year’s graduating class. The cumulative effect of earnings from multiple classes would have an enormous impact on the Richmond region, benefitting businesses through an enhanced workforce and providing economic benefits for the students and the region. With this in mind, Greater Richmond Chamber members have overwhelmingly identified education and workforce development as pillars of a thriving community. In the spirit of National Mentoring Month in January, the Chamber rallied together its

We just have to listen to them.” They said society doesn’t do very well in teaching a person how grief feels when a loss is suffered. “We’re not prepared for more than a real short ceremony, a funeral, and then three days later go back to work,” Patsi said. “That’s how our culture deals with it and it’s not very effective. OPINION | The Local Views From the editor

Girl proves age isn’t an issue with charity Generosity comes in all shapes and sizes — and ages. Such is the case of a soon-to-be 8-year-old girl. Last week, Emily Lawson’s mom Buffy sent in an e-mail about the gracious and charitable decision her daughter has made as her birthday approaches. Rather than receive presents for herself, Emily is asking her friends to bring a donation for BARK (Bandit’s Adoption and Rescue of K-9s). Among suggested items are dog food, treats and toys. Emily and her friends will be celebrating her birthday on March 31 at The Dance Company. Buffy will be following up with us after the party. No doubt there will be a outpouring of support for this kind gesture. How impressive that someone so young cares enough to give to a charitable organization. Emily is setting an incredible example. Even in these difficult economic times, we can help in so many ways. Do you ever take the time to read the label on a jar placed on the counter in the checkout area of a store or business? There is so much need — and every little bit truly does help. Recently, our community has seen neighbors helping neighbors with fundraisers to provide assistance with medical expenses. Whatever the cause may be, the attention and donation we offer does make a difference. Emily is a heart-warming example of what’s right with our society. She may be young, but she sure is on the right path of life.

Golly, he got the Stock Bill brought to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives (417 to 2 in favor) and (it also was avoted on by the Senate 96 to 3 in favor) got it through Congress with amazing speed – after CBS’s “60 Minutes” blew the whistle late last year. If these idiots in those “hallowed halls” would display the same tenacious attitude in their day-to-day responsibilities Congress would work and not have the 90 percent unfavorable ratings they currently “enjoy.” said. “We know right now that this will create a deficit then.” As for his vote on the proposal, Millican said, “I would have liked to see changes in the early retirement program. I think retirees should get equal pay for equal work.” The approved budget is $11.96 million less than the current $203.95 million budget and is the fourth consecutive year of major cuts to expenditures.

I thought “insider trading” was a felony or at least a class one misdemeanor. This is exactly what the TEA Party has been saying for the past few years or so (not that I totally agree with everything they say). The government threw Martha Stewart in prison for it (not that I’m a fan). This is the epitome of hypocrisy in our central government. How can the U.S. solve its economic woes and maintain respect on the global scene if we have this garbage behavior going on in the “middle of the beltway?” How can these criminals in Congress stall on issues like unemployment benefits/extensions, social security maintesee LETTERS, pg. 15

Axselle, as chairman, spoke on behalf of fellow School Board members. “We have to do the best we can with what we have. We had to make some hard decisions that we’re not happy about. We had to do what’s best for the children of Hanover County, and, as soon as this process is complete, we’ll begin working on ways to proceed for 2013-2014. We’ll find a way to get it done.”

in assessments in 2013, about 96 percent of homeowners in Hanover County will pay $300 less in real property taxes. Personal property taxes are projected to increase only $680,000. Edwin Gaskin, director of economic development, said all county departments had to take hits. “They had to make some tough decisions in some very austere times,” he said. “Our department has a few adjustments being proposed, but they still have to adopt these things. I think all departments gave some as part of the process. We’ll be fine operationally. It won’t compromise our initiative.” The first budget workshop is scheduled for 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, Feb. 29).

Primrose School students dance for ‘happy, healthy hearts’ Photos submitted by Halle Smith

Five-year-old Primrose School of Atlee Commons student Kate Helsley, photo at left, dances for “happy, healthy hearts” with her father Erik at a Pirates & Princesses Dance on Valentine’s Day. The dance raised money for the Children’s Hospital of Richmond and kicked off Primrose Schools’ nationwide Family Dance-off to fight childhood obesity. Local children are encouraging families to get moving by submitting 30-second dance videos to FamilyDanceoff.com and voting from now until March 23 to help the hospital win a $30,000, $20,000 or $15,000 donation. “The children’s hospital saved my child’s life. I have him here today because of what they did, and being able to give back through the Family Dance-off and promote health and wellness in other children – it’s a gift,” Ann Andrade, franchise owner of Primrose School of Atlee Commons, said. Pinewood Derby Photo submitted by Tom Haynie

Cub Scout Pack 544 recently held its annual Pinewood Derby, with, from left, Zach Gordon, Olie Crone and Will Blessing taking first, second and third places in the racing competition for Cub Scouts in the Boy Scouts of America. The Scouts, with the help of parents, build their cars from pinewood and plastic wheels, sometimes kits, and then race them. The Scouts are given a block of wood made of pine, four plastic wheels and four nails. The finished car must use all nine pieces, must not exceed a certain weight (usually five ounces), must not exceed a certain length and must fit on the track used by that particular scout pack. The scouts decorate their cars as they desire. Using their favorite team’s colors, NASCAR, or however they desire. The popular event is a chance for the scouts and their parents to spend time helping the child design, carve, paint, add weights, and tune the final car. Pack 544 from Mechanicsville is chartered to the Shady Grove United Methodist Church.

Graveside services were held at Washington Memorial Park. Rosa Buchanan Satterwhite, “Ellen”. On Feb. 20 2012, a little after midnight, at the age of 92, the clock of life ticked down its final moments for the beloved Rosa “Ellen” Buchanan Satterwhite. She is now in the arms of the man who loved her every day of their 64-year marriage, Clarence Broaddus Satterwhite. This gentle, selfless, and amazing woman made magical the most ordinary things for her friends and family. Ellen was the matriarch of a community that loved her, so as

did her family of whom she leaves behind three surviving daughters, Shelby Satterwhite DeBruicker, Marilyn Satterwhite Saul, and Vivian “Totsy” Satterwhite Sale; and she dearly missed her youngest daughter, Linda Satterwhite Taylor, whom Ellen holds close again. Ellen also leaves behind her devoted and loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Lauren Ellen DeBruicker, John DeBruicker, Meredith Saul Touchstone, William Touchstone and Berkeley Touchstone; as well as a large extended family of sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, sons-in-law, and so many others. Laura Seat and Iolia Lee, caregivers and angels in Ellen’s everyday life, will miss her deeply with the rest of the family. We cannot forget her ever-faithful dog who brought her so much joy in her final years, Little Girl. To celebrate the last year of her

long and storied life of raising children, some hers and some not, rescuing animals, and spoiling all that she knew with love and good southern food, Mother Nature celebrated her with a hurricane on her birthday and snow for her passing, both signs of the great impact that she had on the world around her. Her treasured friends, family, and community will miss her always and forever. The family received visitors on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012 at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, Va. Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 at Taylorsville Baptist Church. Graveside services were held in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent in Ellen’s honor to Doswell Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, a cause near to Ellen’s heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys and William; brother, John; sister, Eloise; the love of his life and wife of 66 years, Helen; and son, Bill. He grew up in south Georgia. Suribachi at Iwo Jima. Fittingly, he assumed command of the U.S.S. Suribachi in 1967. He was awarded the Silver and Bronze Stars. Other Navy assignments included flight squadron commanding officer in Miramar, Calif. and serving with the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C. before retiring in the early 1970s. Over his lifetime, Billie’s family marveled at his shift from militarystyle toughness to a gentleness that was at his core. Billie is

People seeking help can join the group at any session, and each is self-contained, so the sessions do not have to be attended in a particular order. It’s all about team for Croskey and Desgain Seniors put aside ego and gained success By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com For most of their careers, it seemed as if Randolph-Macon senior guards Calvin Croksey and Adam Desgain played in the shadows of their peers. From their freshman through juniors seasons, the pair played in the looming shadow of one of the most memorable classes on R-MC history. Even as seniors, Croskey and Desgain have sometimes been overlooked in favor of dynamic underclassmen or a talented freshman class. And though the pair may have not garnered the personal recognition of former and future Yellow Jackets, they will leave R-MC as the class that accomplished the most. With 92 wins and counting, Croskey and Desgain will graduate as the winningest class in R-MC history. In 2010 they were part of RandolphMacon’s first men’s basketball team to reach the NCAA D-III Final Four. They were also on the first Yellow Jacket team to earn a regular season #1 national ranking. Earlier this month they made history by notching the program’s 500th win in Crenshaw Gymnasium; a location where they only lost five times during their career. They are also only the second class to graduate with 20 or more wins in each of their four years. “It’s been more than I could ever go and explain,” said Desgain, a product of J.R. Tucker High School. “From playing in the Final Four my sopho-

more year to winning the conference championship my junior year.” Likewise, Croskey could not have foreseen such success coming out of Osbourn Park. “As a high school senior I’ve always dreamed of winning a national championship. I’ve always dreamed of being a great player. I’ve always dreamed of- playing so well in college that I get a chance to play after college“But to accomplish everything (that I have), I couldn’t really predict that was going to happen… I knew we’d have a lot of wins, but to have all those wins, I probably didn’t foresee all of that.” Croskey and Desgain were not only paired together on the playing floor and as roommates but their statistics have remained back-to-back through-

out their careers. As freshmen, Croskey averaged eight minutes in 25 games, Desgain seven minutes in 19 games. The two have played in every game since. Croskey has started all but two games over the past three years while Desgain became a full time starter this season. Both players have averaged more than 20 minutes a game their sophomore through senior years. Where they differ is in personality. Croskey is the stoic face of determination while Desgain lets it all hang out. “He’s more quiet. He leads by example,” Desgain said of Croskey. “As you can tell by games, I like to be the vocal leader and be enthusiastic. We balance each other out.” “He definitely lets his emotions like stay on his sleeve,” Croskey said of

They’re great teammates and they’re good people and they get along really well. Despite the difference in personality, the one thing that brought success to both players was their willingness to step out of the spotlight. “It’s tough when you’re the star player in high school to come to a college that had such a great basketball Go to www.mechlocal.com for a reputation and to kind of know you’re one-on-one interview with history not the first option, you’re not even the making seniors Calvin Croskey second or third,” Croskey said. “With and Adam Desgain the class we had last year, I was prob-

the true team concept. “It’s kind of upsetting to know that a little bit because of your potential, you know what you’re capable of doing, but when you have a class and you have a team as good as we were last year and definitely this year, you kind of let your ego go a little bit,” he said. “You kind of ride with the team. You win with the team, you lose with the team and you kind of just let your ego go for the betterment of the team. “Do I get overlooked sometimes? Yeah. Sure. I feel like everyone does sometime in their career,” Croskey said. “I was like, I want to be a part of this. I want to be a part of this great team and we ended up accomplishing everything we did.” For Davis, Croskey and Desgain’s sacrifice of personal gain has been a lesson that improved the team. “I think they’re both every unselfish and they’ve both put the team first, which they have done their entire time,” Davis said. “When the opportunity’s been there to make plays they’ve made them but they’ve also been unselfish and let other guys make plays when they’ve had a chance and it carries

They’re not going to be any good’,” Desgain said. “But R-MC has a great tradition of bringing in great ball players.” “I knew it was going to be tough,” Croskey said. “The one thing I knew going into my senior year, what I never wanted to feel again, was that heartbreak that we faced at St. Mary’s. I’ve never been so disappointed in myself, our team, I honestly thought we didn’t show up to play…To get ambushed like that, it hurt. “I didn’t want myself, I didn’t R-MC reached the semifinals by escaping with a 99-91 overtime win against Eastern Mennonite on Friday night. However, the season ended abruptly in the second round in a bad night at St. Mary’s of Maryland. Yellow Jackets fall in ODAC semis Contributed report Randolph College held RandolphMacon to just six second-half field goals as the sixth-seeded WildCats upset the second-seeded Yellow Jackets in the semifinals of the 2012 ODAC Men’s Basketball Tournament on Saturday night. The Jackets, who are currently ranked No. 4 in the NCAA South Regional Rankings fell to 21-6 on the season. Randolph held a 19-10 lead after a Derrick Woods-Morrow layup with 10 minutes to go in the opening half. But R-MC rallied, outscoring the Wildcats 21-4 to close out the half and take a 31-23 lead into the locker room after Calvin Croskey drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer. In the second half, Randolph went on a rally of their own, scoring 11 of the first 13 points to pull even at 34-34 on a pair of free-throws by WoodsMorrow.

The Wildcats broke out of a tie at 35 with a 10-3 run to take a seven point advantage with just over eight minutes to go. R-MC responded with a 13-3 run of its own, taking back the lead 49-48 when Lamar Giggetts made a bucket with 2:55 to play. On Randolph’s ensuing possession, Julius Thomas made a three-pointer to put Randolph in front 51-49 before two Giggetts free-throws tied the game at 51 with 2:09 to play. Colton Hunt broke the tie and after a defensive stop, freshman Zach Desgain nailed a 3-pointer with under a minute left to give Randolph a 56-51 lead. Randolph-Macon got a team-high nine points from Croskey and Andre Simon. Woods-Morrow had 20 points and 16 rebounds to help Randolph to a 44-33 edge on the glass. Hunt finished with 14 points of his own.

want my teammates, I didn’t want my coaches to feel that kind of disappointment, that kind of heartbreak ever again.” It only took an initial meeting with the incoming players for Croskey and Desgain to understand they could have a senior year that exceeded expectations. “I knew the one thing this team was going to have, with being so young, we were going to play hard,” Croskey said. “We were going to be athletic. The most (important) thing we have is heart. This team has the most heart that I’ve ever been on, that I’ve ever been a part of and with that, with those three things, even if we didn’t get 20 wins, I knew we were going to be a great team.” R-MC finished the regular season with a 20-5 record, undefeated at home and second place in the ODAC, which Davis attributes to his seniors. “We’ve got so many young guys, you can’t really put into words what their steadiness and their leadership has meant to those (young) guys,” he said. “It feels good to know that we saw what our potential was, what we knew we could be as a team,” Croskey said. “The season isn’t over but I see we can still become a special team. We can still do everything all of our previous teams have done even though we have eight freshmen.”

R-MC NCAA bound for Wooster ment. “I think it’s underestimated just how hard it is to make the field,” he said. “To make the field is fantastic and anyone in has a chance. We’ve just got to make sure that we go up and give a great effort.” R-MC (21-6) will travel to the College of Wooster in Ohio for a Friday matchup against Ohio Athletic Conference Champion Capital from nearby Columbus. The host Fighting Scots (24-4) will take on Maryville (189) in the other contest. Capital earned a bid to the tournament by winning the OAC tournament and enters the NCAA opener with an overall record of 18-9. On the season the Crusaders average 70.7 points per game while holding opponents to 67.7 per contest. see NCAA, pg. 31 `

NCAA Continued from pg. 30 b

Capital is led in scoring by 6-6 junior forward Spencer Niekamp who averages 14.4 points per game. Michael Sommer, a 6-3 junior wing player, is a 39 percent 3-point shooter and averages 11.8 ppg. Sixone senior guard Kelly Winter is the team’s leading rebounder and second leading scorer averaging 5.1 rpg and 13.5 ppg. The trip to Wooster will mean an 8-hour bus ride for the Yellow Jackets, a somewhat unexpected trip following last year’s NCAA scheduling miscue which sent R-MC on the road when they were set to serve as a host team. But that does not matter to Davis. “We did not care where we were going,” he said. “If

they sent us to Wentworth in Washington it did not matter as long as we got in.” Getting in the tournament was placed in jeopardy when the Yellow Jackets lost to #6 seed Randolph in the ODAC semifinals. Therefore, the Jackets were rooting for favorite Va. Wesleyan to win the tournament title. “For our own personal success we needed as many teams as possible that were slotted as Pool A teams to win,” Davis said. “(Wesleyan) was clearly one of those. We had to be pulling for them. We were fortunate that Wesleyan found a way to get the win for us.” A first round win by the Jackets would most likely create a match up with host Wooster, ranked #19 and a team that Davis is familiar with. “We played Wooster two

years ago and they were in the Final Four last year so we’re very familiar with them,” Davis said. “If we’re fortunate enough to get to the point where we get to play them it will be a tough, tough game.” Possible third round matchups would be #1 Hope or a rematch with 2010 Final Four opponent #20 UW StevensPoint. “You’ve got a chance and we’ve got to do everything we can to get ourselves ready to give ourselves the best chance to be successful,” Davis said. ODAC champion Va. Wesleyan earned a first round bye and will host the winner of St. Mary’s (MD) and Bethany (WV). Christopher Newport also made the field and will play Western Connecticut St. at

Woodson now a Wolfpack Hall of Famer

By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com On Feb. 16, Tracy Woodson became the second consecutive Mechanicsville native to be inducted into the North Carolina State Baseball Hall of Fame. This year’s induction followed the 2011 ceremony that included Mechanicsville resident Phillip “Turtle” Zaun. Though Woodson and Zaun never played together at N.C. State, it appears the local pair will always be connected. In 1984, Woodson swatted a school record 25 home runs; a record that was tied four years later by Zaun. Woodson still holds the record for both single season and career slugging percentage at N.C. State. Once again ironically, Woodson is followed in both categories by Zaun. Over his three years with the Wolfpack, Woodson notched a .720 career slugging percentage and in 1984 set another school record with an incredible .913 slugging percentage. Woodson currently ranks fifth in single season RBI (77), eighth in career RBI (166) and third in career home runs with 46, Zaun is second in the category. Tying the pair together even more closely, it was Woodson’s father who drove Zaun to N.C. State for a visit. “He went down with my dad one time for a weekend,” Woodson said. “I don’t even know if he’d have gone there if I hadn’t signed (MLB contract) after my junior year. If I’d have come back for a year maybe he goes someplace else because the opportunity to go play first (base) wouldn’t have been there that first year.” Because in

some ways Woodson introduced Zaun to N.C. State, it only seemed appropriate that Zaun provide the introduction for Woodson at the Hall of Fame Ceremony. “I didn’t know what Turtle was going to say and he was really good,” Woodson said. At the ceremony Zaun spoke of how he followed Woodson through Atlee Little League. “I go to the Seniors, he’s in the Majors and he was always a step behind me,” Woodson said. “He even mentioned, ‘If I had a son, I wish he could play the way (Woodson) did.’ Which I’m sitting there thinking, ‘Jesus, how am I going to follow that up?’ “I was a little bit nervous just because of that introduction and I just said what I felt when I got up there,” Woodson said. “Once I got going it was pretty easy.” Woodson, the son of Mechanicsville’s Bill Woodson and Roxanne Hicks, grew up not only playing with the Atlee Little League but American Legion Post 175 as well. He would have played high school ball at LeeDavis but instead went to Benedictine. From 1982-84 Woodson played for N.C. State and in his junior year he produced one of the greatest single seasons ever in Wolfpack history. For Woodson, there is no specific most memorable moment but rather that season. “My whole junior year stood out for me,” he said. “Back then there was no limit on games. There were teams out on the West Coast playing 80 and we played 40- I was hot for 40 games. I don’t know how that happened and I don’t know what would have happened if we’d played 80 games, but that whole season was pretty amazing both individually and as a team.” NC State went 32-8 in 1984 and Woodson was named ACC Player of the Year and a Second-Team All-American while Sam Esposito earned ACC Coach of the Year honors. Woodson’s one regret from college was he never got to play in the NCAA Tournament. Because fewer teams went to the championship then, most of the at-large bids were given to schools in the South. Therefore, Woodson took special interest when the Virginia Cavaliers reached the College World Series in 2009 and again last season. “That’s where I wanted to go,” he said. see WOODSON, pg. 33 `

“When I was growing up it was Ralph Sampson and all of those guys. Virginia didn’t recruit me. Old Dominion back then said I couldn’t run…N.C. State came down and watched me practice and they offered me a scholarship right away. “I wanted to go to the ACC because of basketball basically,” he said. “I love ACC basketball, I just wasn’t good enough to really go and play basketball.” Though now living in Indiana, Woodson continues to keep up with athletics in Hanover County. “I keep up with all sports,” he said. “I’m a baseball, football, basketball junky. I love it all. I’ve got friends that, some of them are coaching at the high school level in Mechanicsville.” Woodson’s explosive junior year with the Wolfpack made him a third round draft pick by the Los Angles Dodgers. In his eighth Major League game, Woodson belted a home run off MLB Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan. He went on to spend 22 years in professional baseball including five in the majors; 1987-90 with the Dodgers and 1992-93 with the St. Louis Cardinals. As a key reserve for the Dodgers, Woodson was part of one of the greatest moments in Major League Baseball history. It was Woodson, along with his Dodger teammates, who greeted the ailing Kirk Gibson at home plate following his home run in the opening game of the 1988 World Series. When Woodson’s Major League career ended, he became a minor league manager for the Florida Marlins and coached the Albuquerque Isotopes and Carolina Mudcats. In the off season, he worked as a college basketball referee. In 2006, Woodson was named the head baseball coach at Valparaiso University.

From left: Terry Harvey, Tracy Woodson and Jake Weber were inducted into the North Carolina State University Baseball Hall of Fame on Feb. 16. Woodson is a native of Mechanicsville and grew up playing with both the Atlee Little League and Mechanicsville Post 175 baseball teams.

In his first season, the Brown and Gold came in third in the Mid-Continent Conference; their highest finish in five years. Three years later the Crusaders finished above .500 for the first time in a decade. Last season Woodson led Valpo to the Horizon League championship game. Even though he has so much professional experience in his past, Woodson appears to have found his niche in the college ranks. “I love it,” he said. “I have a lot of people ask me, do I want to go back to pro ball. You do what you want here. You recruit the kids that you want. You install your philosophy and how you want your kids to play the game. You schedule who you want to schedule…I love it.” It is from his early days at N.C. State that Woodson came up with one of his most valuable teaching tools. “My first game I was actually in the lineup, one of our players had appendicitis and Coach Esposito put me in the clean-up spot as a freshman- probably two weeks/three weeks into the season,” he said. “I homered

that first game and I never came out of the fourth spot for the rest of my career. “I think that was very important to my success,” he said. “The one game I got an opportunity and I made it hap-

pen. That’s what I tell a lot of my kids now. You may only get one chance. You need to take advantage of that one chance.” Now it is etched in stone that Woodson rode that one chance to a Hall of Fame career.

Hawks’ Knizner opts for N.C. State Last week, Hanover junior short stop Andrew Knizner announced that he made a verbal commitment to continue his baseball career at North Carolina State University. Knizner was offered a scholarship by Coach Tracy Woodson to attend Valpariso University but instead opted to join the school where Woodson played his college ball.

Knizner will join the Wolfpack for the 2013-14 season. Knizner joins Atlee junior pitcher Luke Bolka as the second local underclassman to make an early NCAA Div. I commitment. According to ViringiaPreps. com, Bolka has made a verbal commitment to play at James Madison University.

Injured Anderson gives Cosby advantage Titans hand Patrick Henry 51-41 regional loss By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com When Patrick Henry senior Katie Anderson fell victim to injury late in the Central Region girls basketball quarterfinals, so went the fate of the Patriots in a 51-41 loss to Cosby last Wednesday. Rubbing salt into that wound is the fact that Patrick Henry overcame sluggish play in the first 14 minutes of the game to take control heading into the final quarter of action. Cosby’s tall post players Dorothy and Felicia Adomako dominated the paint early, both on offense and defense as they scored with ease and grabbed a majority of the rebounds. Meanwhile, Titan guards Olivia Morgan and Adriane Vaughn repeatedly utilized quick hands to strip the ball from the Patriots. Hermitage 31, Lee-Davis 30 Shannon Thompson made a foul shot with 5.8 seconds left, and Hermitage forced a turnover on the next possession to fight off Lee-Davis 31-30 last Tuesday night in a Central Region playoff game. Hermitage had a tough night at the foul line and missed several shots close to the basket to let Lee-Davis hang close. With 5:34 to play in the second, Cosby broke open a close contest with a two-minute burst. Vaughn (18 points) split a gap in the defense for a layup, Morgan connected on a three, Dorothy Adomako (16 points) scored inside then it was Vaughn once again on a steal and layup to cap a 9-0 run. But trailing by 11 with two minutes left in the half, the Patriots defense suddenly found a spark allowing the offense to go to work on a 7-0 run of their own. A three from the left baseline by Madison Gilman was followed by a turnaround off an inbounds play to Amber Lee. When senior Katie Anderson, who scored a game high 21 points, connected on a pair of free throws with 56.6 seconds left in the half, Patrick Henry trailed 21-17. The Patriots’ disruptive defense continued to do its work in the second half, holding Cosby to five points in the third period. “We kind of lost our composure a little bit,” said Cosby head

The Mechanicsville Local February 29, 2012

coach Rachel Meade. “Patrick Henry’s a good team for obvious reasons. They don’t win 22 games not being good and we knew that coming in.” Trailing 23-19, PH seniors Anderson and Jasmine Smith, who was key in the comeback, each added a pair of free throws to tie the game. “Jasmine was a spark for us offensively as well as on defense,” said Patrick Henry head coach Phillip Cobb. “She was a big part of us getting back in that game.” A turnaround jumper by Anderson gave the Patriots a 2523 lead. Anderson then added two more free throws four seconds into the fourth to widen Patrick Henry’s lead to five, 31-26. Disaster struck 30 seconds later. Anderson came down with a rebound off a Cosby miss and was knocked to the floor by Dorothy Adomako. The ball rolled loose, Adomako retrieved it then was fouled on a drive to the basket. When Anderson climbed to

her feet, she headed straight for the Patriots’ bench, blood trailing from her elbow. “There was no question. The girl ran her over,” Cobb said. “It was really the changing point of the game. You can’t put it on the officials but that was definitely the play that changed the game.” The no-call played little in the eventual outcome, but the injury did. While Anderson sat on the bench being attended to, and later went to the locker room to change due to blood on her uniform, Cosby immediately gained the upper hand. “We were trying to take advantage of the whole situation,” Meade said. Adomako connected on both free throws and seconds later Morgan drilled a three from the left baseline to tie the game at 31 and force a Patriot time out. When the game resumed, Anderson returned to the floor but it was obvious the heavily taped shooting elbow was bothering her. “She was hurting pretty

bad,” Cobb said. “She may need stitches. “There’s no question that was a big factor,” he added. “We had momentum, Katie gets hurt and it wasn’t the same. We lost a little momentum there. That’s how it happens sometimes.” After scoring 17 of the Patriots first 31 points, Anderson only made one field goal over the final seven minutes of play. Jasmine Pinder momentarily put PH back on top with an eight foot jumper but Vaughan quickly answered for the Titans. Dorothy Adomako scored on a baseline drive and a short jumper then Vaughan found pay dirt once again from outside for a 40-33 Cosby lead. Holding a seven point lead with 3:32 to play, Meade instructed her Titans to run the clock and they showed no intention of shooting the ball again. Patrick Henry was forced to foul four times to put Cosby in the bonus and the Titans connected on 12 of 13 free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Despite the unfortunate ending, Cobb was enthusiastic about his team’s performance. “We got

down early but we fought back, I’m so proud of my girls for fighting back,” he said. The game marked a building return to prominence for the Patriots. “It’s been 17 years since the girls have advanced past the first round (of regionals),” Cobb said. “We talked about every year we’ve taken a step in the right direction. Two years running Colonial District champions, last year we lost in the first round. This year we make it one step further but we lose in the second round. Going forward, that’s our goal.” Other than Anderson and Smith, the Patriots should return every player next season. COSBY (22-4) — Triplett 0, Conyers 4, Morgan 9, F.
