Supervisors united in opposing toll plan By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local Last month, the Hanover Board of Supervisors voiced concerns regarding the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) plan to install tolls on Interstate 95. Earlier last week, the supervisors acted on those concerns and passed a resolution expressing their opposition to the plan. The resolution will be shared with neighboring localities, VDOT and other transportation agencies, and a copy is
headed to the governor’s office. Some board members met with VDOT and state officials, including a representative from the governor’s office, last week. Chickahominy District supervisor Angela Kelly-Wiecek called the meeting productive, and new details emerged regarding the proposed plan. “It was a very frank and honest discussion,” she said. While multiple toll booths were originally proposed, the current plan is focusing on one collection point near Emporia.
Constructing the toll plazas would cost the state about $50 million, and annual revenues are estimated at between $25 million and $30 million. Some of the supervisors questioned the wisdom of the revenue numbers, especially when considering the loss of federal aid for I-95 ($50 million annually) that could be lost if the toll program is initiated. Sheriff honors superintendent, county leaders for rescue efforts Dr. Jamelle Wilson, superintendent of schools, was recognized during the 12th Annual Awards Program of the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office. The ceremony, held on May 16, is intended to recognize those who have made significant contributions to the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office during the past year. Chief Fred Crosby of Hanover Fire/EMS and Cecil R. “Rhu” Harris Jr., Hanover County administrator, also were honored during the ceremony. This year the awards centered on the efforts involved in the October 2011 search for Robert Wood Jr. The 8-year-old autistic child went missing on Oct. 23, 2011, and was found by a citizen after an intense six-day search near the North Anna Battlefield Park (an 80-acre park) in Hanover County. Wilson, along with Crosby and Harris,
served as part of that leadership team that was instrumental to the success of the search operation. “Everyone would be put to the test, challenges would be identified and overcome. New relationships were formed, new experiences fostered, training and equipment tested and lessons learned and, most importantly, a community came together like never before to help someone in need,” Col. David R. Hines said. Wilson was presented with the “Excellent Service to Law Enforcement Award” for her efforts and dedication to the Sheriff ’s Office during the Robert Wood incident, as well as her support and dedication throughout the years to the law enforcement community and the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office. than we did in the past,” South Anna District supervisor Wayne Hazzard said. “We’ll be collecting tolls on I-95 that will benefit the other interstates more than us. If that makes good sense, we ought to buy something else from them I guess.” The ordinance outlines the board’s objections to the proposed plan, including: ☞ Installing the tolls is an inefficient means of collecting revenue. ☞ An increased burden on state and local police to enforce and monitor the checkpoints. ☞ Increase of traffic on other local thoroughfares. ☞ Tolls could discourage the emerging distribution industry,

an integral part of the economic development strategy. ☞ The potential loss of up to $50 million in Federal assistance for upgrades and maintenance on I-95. The cost of maintaining and upgrading I-95 are staggering. Projected costs for major repairs and improvements are more $12 billion in the next 25 years. The current VDOT funding will only provide a fraction of that amount and will leave the state more than $9 million short. Kelly-Wiecek said officials said the tolls are only a portion of the plan to raise funds for the
I-95 corridor. VDOT plans to charge between $2 and $4 for passenger cars. Tractor-trailers would pay more, about $12. Henry District supervisor Sean Davis said a recent meeting of the Metropolitan Planning Organization convinced him that VDOT is moving forward with the project, despite the objections of many localities. “After hearing opposition from numerous localities, the next presentation they brought before (VDOT) the MPO was where they were going to place them (the toll gantries) and how they would be con-
structed. There was absolutely no acknowledgement of any opposition,” Davis said. The motion to approve the resolution passed unanimously. In other matters, acting planning director David Maloney sought board approval to advertise a Zoning Ordinance Update and Reorganization. The plan makes no changes to current zoning ordinances, but seeks to clarify and update the document, originally penned in 1959. “We have a document that is not really well organized and often challenging to follow,” Maloney said.

4th about more than cookouts, fireworks While there are many reasons to celebrate our nation’s independence tomorrow, we often fall into the routine of looking at the Fourth of July as a holiday filled with hamburgers, hot dogs and fireworks. There was a time when this writer’s memories of Independence Day (which was the term we were taught “back in the day”) centered on gathering on the lawn at a friend’s house to watch fireworks light up the night in my hometown. From the hillside, we were perched above the football field where the pyrotechnics were capably handled by the city’s fire department. Another part of the tradition was having a stereo blaring Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon.” Yes, this was the era of albums (if you’re too young to know what that is, look it up). When Hanover County became home four years ago, an excitement stirred of the history of Virginia and the remarkable “Road to Revolution Heritage Trail.” And, talking about coincidences, yours truly has been a great admirer of Patrick Henry since elementary school. How impressive to call home the lands where he traveled. We too often take for granted the freedoms we enjoy. We see the striking red, white and blue flag flying and put our hand over our heart to pledge our allegiance to our flag and join in singing “The Star Spangled Banner.” But do we really absorb those actions and words? As we age, there seems to be a greater appreciation for those patriotic gestures. As the battle to election day wages on, we must hold to what makes us special — and envied — around the globe. We are Americans. We call the United States home. We are free. So, whether you throw a burger on the grill, head to the pool, or get a good seat to watch the fireworks, the Fourth of July represents our past, our present and our future. The war fought in the 1700s to bring us to this point and that Declaration of Independence spark deep emotions. Thomas Jefferson’s words live on — and because of those leaders of long ago, we can unite in saying “Let freedom ring.” Happy Fourth! Melody Kinser

Churches must stand and be counted America has largely forgotten its Biblical roots. Uncoupled from our founding principles, we have become a nation of uncurbed excesses, radical ideologies and slavish “political correctness.” We have placed into power a socialist president with a dictatorial style of governance. His administration has systematically eroded the foundations of our society, undermined our Constitution, and weakened the time-proven pillars of our society. How can the church in America remain silent? To change America’s course, our churches must stand and be counted. In order for our churches to stand up, our pastors and church leaders must be educated on legal matters and empowered. The cultural impact of America’s hundreds of thousands of church bodies tends to reflect their pastors’ leadership. Pastors and other ministry leaders must not be silenced. It has become evident that we have neglected to maintain constant vigil over our religious freedoms. No form of government, republic or dictatorship can rule an unrestrained people! That’s why we, as grassroots conservative Americans and Christians, must speak up now or forever regret our silence. We must act now or face the disastrous consequences of our inaction. We must return our nation to its proven foundations or pathetically wobble until society crumbles beneath our feet. It is essential that every believer addresses the spiritual, moral and political issues of our day. It is time that elected officials put principle above their political interests! Electing properly vetted legislators and executives with moral, social and political compasses more closely aligned with grassroots Americans is a vital part of restoring our nation. Even in the midst of significant threats to our liberty in 2012, I believe we also have unprecedented opportunities to greatly advance the values of life, liberty and family. How can we remain silent at such a time as this? Wilma Royer Mechanicsville
Leasing operations to foreign interests I do not understand why our government at all levels is beginning to lease out many of its operations to foreign
interests. First it was management of our shipping ports, then management of some of our toll roads and now management of our national elections, something that can sabotage our elections and cause disastrous results. How can we trust foreign officials who have no ties to this country, nor value its culture or way of our constitutional government to manage counting the votes? Devvy Kidd, a writer for NewsWithViews.com, who is a highly reliable researcher, just wrote an article entitled, “Mechanism in place to fix 12 elections for Obama/ Soetoro,” about this takeover by a Spanish firm and what you can do about it. You can access her entire article by clicking on the following link: http://newswithviews.com/Devvy/kidd533. htm. I don’t know what is wrong with this country today by allowing people from other countries to take over jobs, government positions, Social Security, Medicare, etc. And now our national elections probably followed by state and local ones as well. If this trend isn’t stopped, you won’t have to worry about anymore wars to fight foreign aggressors. The aggressors are already here and won without firing one single shot. Well, I am not going down without a good verbal fight. I hope many of you will feel the same way I do and take the action recommended in her article needed to put a stop to this treason. In closing, I would like to paraphrase a saying that is now going around the Internet.. “I complained about big government and overspending but I was too busy to do anything and government got bigger and spent more. “I complained about illegal immigration but was too busy to do anything and the illegals came in, took our jobs, robbed and killed us and robbed our municipal treasuries. see LETTERS, pg. 7

The actions of ‘real Obama’ Wake up, America. This is 2012 and we’re being placed under lock and key by the Obama administration. The abuse my African American brothers and sisters have taken since 2008 is beyond belief and it’s due to the actions of the “real Obama,” not the fake one. The fake one promised African Americans the whole ball of wax: better schools, better teachers, jobs, help with
their homes being repossessed, transparency, lower taxes – over 95 percent of us in the African American community voted for him in 2008. Still, after the bashing the African Americans have received, the majority will sadly vote for him in 2012 – go figure. Here’s what we received from the greatest salesmen of all time: higher unemployment, no jobs, homes repossessed, absolutely no transparency, acceleration of abortions in black communities and horrifically poor conditions in many of our schools due to union control. Obama is MIA most of the time, not spending time in our communities – he’s too busy playing footsy with the gay community than helping his own people. But, after all of the lies and false promises to the African American community, many are still hanging on to his coattails and will obediently vote for him in 2012. Sadly, the very people the African community considers our friends and saviors are the culprits who are taking money from our pockets, laughing all the way to the bank. Barack Obama, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Van Jones types are terrorizing our communities. These people have turned on our own people, abusing us to promote a false ideology that has never worked in the history of mankind. Isn’t it time for the sake of our children and grandchildren

Obama book a must read There is a best-selling book out now by Journalist Ed Klein, a former liberal editor of the New York Times, titled, “Amateur, Barack Obama in the White House.” In this book, Klein interviews 200 individuals who knew Barack Hussein Obama before he was elected president. His interviews also include Jeremiah Wright and Obama’s personal physician. Understandably, the liberal left is having “fits” about this book and is “pulling out all of the stops’ to deface, belittle and discredit this book and especially the author of the same. It is, therefore, a must read to all who value their liberties and freedoms. It is basically about Obama’s “real” hope and change that he and his “lapdog media” have kept absolutely silent about. It is very “shocking,” to say the least, and most liberals, who even read it, will probably throw it away. An old axiom states: “The brutal truth only hurts those who refuse to accept it.” Everyone in America should read this book, no matter what your political association. William Winfrey Mechanicsville

Jamie Mullenaux, a fifth grade teacher at Mechanicsville Elementary School, recently took her class to Kings Dominion to celebrate a complimentary day she received as Hanover County’s 2012 Teacher of the Year.
uring the Hanover Education Foundation’s (HEF) 13th Annual Celebration of Excellence in Education last November, Jamie Mullenaux, Hanover County’s 2012 Teacher of the Year, was recognized by Owen Matthews, finance director for Kings Dominion. She was awarded a complimentary day at the amusement park with her class that included the park’s new Dinosaurs Alive exhibit.
“Everyone got to ride some of their favorites, including The Dominator and The Scrambler. For several of my students it was their first visit to an amusement park and I’m certain it’s something they won’t forget,” Mullenaux said. The park’s new six-acre animatronic dinosaur exhibit features 36 life-sized dinosaurs on display in Dinosaurs Alive! in an outdoor Jurassic forest setting. The multi-sensory and interactive dinosaur park
brings inspiration, science and technology together at Kings Dominion, where guests also hear the sounds and see the movements of 36 full-sized creations made to replicate nearly every feature of the dinosaurs. Each of the animatronic dinosaurs is handcarved and covered with a skin-like material. Information submitted by Linda M. Scarborough, Hanover County Public Schools communications specialist.

Graduation DVDs net scholarships for students Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com Two Hanover County Public Schools students received scholarships from proceeds earned from the sale of TV99 graduation DVDs. Bronwyn Baumgardner, a recent Atlee High School graduate, and Kacie Melton, a recent Patrick Henry High School graduate, were recognized for their outstanding service to TV99. “These students demonstrated excellent broadcasting skills, commitment to the quality of their work and a positive attitude” said TV99 station manager Stacie Marshall. “We’ll miss both of them next year, along with the rest of this year’s crew. All our TV99 student interns do great work for the school district.” Baumgardner won a $250 scholarship, which she will be using to major in broadcast journalism at Virginia Commonwealth University next year. Melton won a $100 scholarship to further her studies in art history and visual arts at Christopher Newport University in the fall. In addition to streaming this year’s commencement ceremonies live for the first time, TV99 is making DVDs available for sale with the proceeds continuing to fund scholarship opportunities for our students. TV99’s Lip Dub wins Telly for Trip Wells Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com
T
he Telly Awards has named Hanover’s own TV99 as a Bronze winner for Cinematography in the 33rd Annual Telly Awards for the nowinfamous Hanover County Lip Dub, which was shot by TV99 producer/ videographer Trip Wells. “With nearly 11,000 entries from all 50 states and numerous countries, this is truly an honor,” Stacie Marshall, TV station manager said. The winning video featured the song “Roll with the Changes” and was so beloved by the band that REO
Speedwagon featured it on their website and recently made an impromptu tour stop at Hanover High School to visit the production crew and many of the 1,000-plus participants. The Telly Awards was founded in 1979 and is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs, the finest video and film productions, and online commercials, video and films. Winners represent the best work of the most respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators and corporate video departments in the world.
A panel of more than 500 industry professionals, each a past winner of a Silver Telly and a member of The Silver Telly Council, judged the competition, upholding the historical standard of excellence that Telly represents. The Silver Council evaluated entries to recognize distinction in creative work – entries do not compete against each other – rather entries are judged against a high standard of merit. “The Telly Awards has a mission to honor the very best in film and video,” said Linda Day, executive director of the Telly Awards. “TV99’s accomplishment illustrates their creativity,
skill, and dedication to their craft and serves as a testament to great film and video production.” “This win is a true testament to Trip Wells’ cinematography skills,” said Marshall. “Not only was the nearly six minute video shot all in one continuous take with no edits, but Trip shot the video using complicated gear that he’d only had for three weeks. He was completely self-taught, and completely determined to make sure the production was of the highest quality possible. We couldn’t be more proud of his win.” To find out more about the Telly Awards, visit www.tellyawards.com.

Musical benefit planned to help local woman Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com A musical benefit has been organized for Sunday, July 8, to help a Mechanicsville woman who is undergoing rehabilitation following major back surgery. According to Melissa Lawson Hines, the event will begin at 3:30 p.m. at Cullen’s Cove in Mechanicsville to ben-
efit Judy Watson, who had surgery on May 15. Cullen’s Cove owner Rob Hazelwood is assisting Hines with the fundraiser. Hines said Watson’s surgery consisted of a multi-vertebrae fusion and removal of a cyst on her L4. The procedure became necessary so that Watson could continue living her life as she did, to walk again freely, to care for her son like all mothers do, and to again work daily for a living.
Watson, Hines added, had complications that caused her hospital stay to be longer. She is home and relies on family and friends to help her recover. “We are still hopeful for a positive outcome, but none the less worry for her and her son Colton,” Hines said. In addition to her medical condition, Watson suffered a loss with the January death of

the man known as her love, Steve Lawson. He succumbed to a lengthy and financially draining illness at the age of 53. Watson lost her job in February and learned in March of the need for surgery. The Hanover Center for Trades and Technology is the 17th school in Virginia to become an Automotive Youth Educational Systems (AYES) approved school. Members of the local automotive community gathered at The Hanover Center for Trades and Technology on May 24 for a recognition program sponsored by the Virginia Automotive Dealers Association. As an AYES approved program, students enrolled in automotive at the school will now have access to several scholarships and other career oppor-
tunities. AYES is a national partnership of automobile manufacturers and dealers and education departments throughout the country. The groups strive to fill the open service positions by preparing students for entry-level jobs in dealerships all over the nation. More than 4,500 dealerships participate in AYES as a new approach for hiring and training automotive technicians. The automotive program at The Hanover Center for Trades and Technology became eligible
to earn the AYES designation after being nationally certified as a National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) approved program earlier this year. NATEF was founded as an independent nonprofit organization designed to evaluate technician training programs against standards developed by the automotive industry and recommend qualifying programs for NATEF accreditation. Virginia are sparklers, fountains, Pharaoh’s serpents, caps for pistols and pinwheels (commonly known as whirligigs or spinning jennies). Residents are asked to observe these safety precautions when using fireworks of any kind: ★ Always read and follow label directions. ★ Have an adult supervise all fireworks activities. ★ Buy from a reliable fireworks dealer. ★ Ignite outdoors.
★ Have water handy. ★ Never experiment or attempt to make your own fireworks. ★ Light one at a time. ★ Never re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks. ★ Never give fireworks to small children. ★ Store in a cool, dry place. ★ Dispose of properly. ★ Never throw fireworks. ★ Never carry fireworks in your pocket. ★ Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers. “All fireworks are extremely
dangerous, especially in the hands of children,” said M.J. Flournoy, Hanover County chief fire marshal. “Instead of handling these fireworks yourselves, it is much safer to visit the many fireworks displays available throughout Hanover County and the region. Let the professionals handle it and keep your family safe.” For more information, call 365-6195. Information submitted by Tom Harris, Hanover County public information officer.

Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing (BSMCON) has announced recent accreditation for its BSN and RN to BSN degree completion program by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) in Washington, D.C. After four years of planning and implementation, the college received a five-year accreditation, the longest duration a new program can receive. The CCNE accreditation is based on an intensive review of how the college implemented the American Association of Colleges of Nursing guidelines for baccalaureate nursing programs. This review examined the program’s quality as it related to: mission and governance; institutional commitment and resources; curriculum and teaching-learning practices; and program effectiveness. Nearly 80 percent of the BSN programs in the United States are accredited by CCNE. One of the most significant changes the college made to receive this accreditation was
transitioning from an RN diploma program to a bachelor of science in nursing and an online RN to BSN completion degree. The new program offers students the opportunity to broaden their education by requiring more general education courses along with nursing courses and clinical experiences appropriate to baccalaureate nursing education. “The achievement of this accreditation was a collaborative process,” Dr. Susan Bodin, BSMCON’s dean of nursing, said. “The faculty worked together to develop a curriculum that acknowledged the clinical strength of our diploma program while implementing the collegiate differences of a baccalaureate curriculum,” she said. “The well-rounded curriculum gives the students a broader view of professional nursing and starts a pathway for life-long learning,” Dr. Bodin added. The first graduation ceremonies under the new curriculum and accreditation will be in August 2012 for the RN to BSN program and in May 2013 for the BSN program. Going Gran Fondo! 102-mile ride will cover eight jurisdictions By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com On October 6, local cyclists will have a chance to take part in a Tour de France type event that runs through their own backyard. Sports Backers has announced the first ever Martin’s Tour of Richmond cycling event, which will cover 102 miles through eight Central Virginia jurisdictions, both starting and finishing at Richmond International Raceway. “To have that kind of event happening right here in Central Virginia is very unique and special and something new to our cycling events that occur in our region,” said Sports Backers executive director John Lugbill. The riders will leave RIR in the Gran Fondo style event, heading south into the city of Richmond, cross the river then ride out through Midlothian to Powhatan. From there, they will cross over the 522 Bridge, ride up to Goochland, near Montpelier, then on to Ashland before circling back to RIR. Two shorter versions of the event have also been set up; a 58-mile ride, which will join the larger group at the J. Sargeant Reynolds campus in Goochland and a 29-mile ride which will join in at Poor Farm Park in Hanover. “It’s really a different course,”
On October 6, cyclists will have the opportunity to take part in a 102-mile trek around Central Virginia. The Martin’s Tour of Richmond will start and finish at Richmond International Raceway but travel through eight different jurisdictions including the city of Richmond, Midlothian, Powhatan, Goochland and Ashland.
Lugbill said. “It is not meant to be flat, it’s actually meant to be hilly and it is.” The Tour sets the stage for the Cycling World Championships which will come to Richmond in September of 2015 and also adds to the recent focus on cycling in the city. “I was really excited to find out about this event,” said
Jakob Helmboldt, Pedestrian Coordinator for the city of Richmond. “I think it’s a fantastic opportunity that really fits well with the initiatives that we’re undertaking with the city of Richmond. “We really are striving to put Richmond, Virginia on that list of cities that are trying to make cycling, whether it’s for health,
recreation, competition, or simply daily routine travel options, as an affordable means and a healthy means of travel in the city.” For Helmboldt, the Tour is the perfect bridge between the city initiatives and the World Championships. “This kind of fits perfectly in the middle because it kind of has elements

of both,” he said. “Bringing people to the sport, creating excitement, generating awareness of what we’re all doing, while also having a competitive component to it.” Sports Backer Event Coordinator Megan Schultz has the task of putting it all together. “It will be a challenge but that’s kind of what we thrive
on,” she said. “We’re looking forward to that challenge and excited to partner with all kinds of people in the community.” Schultz said the ride will begin at 7 a.m. and she envisions the final riders returning to RIR by 6 p.m. Though the exact logistics have yet to be worked out, Schutlz said there are plans to have hydration, food and first aid stations along the route.

Mechanicsville keeps record perfect Post 175 not slowing down at 12-0 By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com Facing one of their greatest challenges of the season, Post 175 battled back from a 4-3 fifth inning deficit to pick up a hard fought 8-4 win over Post 361 on Thursday night. The victory kept Mechanicsville’s perfect season alive with an 11-0 record and on pace to be one of the best Legion teams in recent history. “It’s all about how bad we want it and I think we want it more than anybody else out there,” said Post 175 catcher Mitch Keeler. Even though 361 came to Atlee High School with a 3-3 record, they were also one of the Legion’s most talented teams and they showed it throughout the contest. Things did not start off well for Mechanicsville ace James Walsh when 361 lead-off hitter Will Hodges reached on error. Walsh then walked John Lloyd to quickly put a pair of runners on base with no outs. But Walsh bounced back to strikeout Dylan Gonzalez. He then caught Brandon Stien on a groundout to second and struck out Andrew Woods to escape the inning with no damage. Things did not go much better in the top of the second when Walsh immediately walked Joe Lane. One out later, Lane stood at third eager to score. But Walsh (7 strikeouts) struck out Will Engels and escaped the inning on a bizarre play. Facing Trent Tutwiler, Walsh lost control of the ball, sending a pitch far outside the box 10 feet off the ground. Lane immediately saw an opening and raced for home. But both Walsh and Keeler read the wild pitch early and

were moving before it reached the plate. Keeler retrieved the ball from the backstop and lobbed to Walsh were he tagged Lane so smoothly that it appeared to be a trick play. “I just saw it over my head and started running back before it crossed me,” Keeler said. “It just happened to work out. That was not designed at all,” he laughed. Throughout the game, the top of the Mechanicsville lineup struggled with the top four going a combined 4-for-17 with two walks and a sacrifice. But the bottom of the card stepped up to carry the load, showing off the team’s depth. “Even when our top of the lineup struggles a little bit, our bottom of the lineup picks it up,” Keeler said. “(If) the bottom of the lineup is struggling, the top of the lineup picks it up.” But second baseman Brent West pointed out that there is no real top or bottom to the batting order. Everyone on the roster was a top batter in high school giving Post 175 the ability to consistently hit from any
slot. “So nobody’s been lower than a number four hitter,” West said. “Once the first time through the order, there’s no set order anymore. No one’s the number four batter. No one’s the number three batter. It changes throughout the game.” That depth came alive in the bottom of the second when the middle of the lineup came to the plate. Bryant Lowry was hit by a pitch then advanced on a single to center by Keeler. A sacrifice bunt by Cameron Hall put both runners into scoring position and they came home for a 2-0 lead when West reached second on a lob into left field. When Bryan Johansen sent what looked to be a groundout ball to short, West acted as decoy, pulling off second far enough to make 361’s Andrew Woods contemplate throwing to third. It was all the time Johansen needed to beat out the throw to first. Next up, Chop Pulisic blistered a line drive into right, sending West home for a 3-0
lead. Things fell apart for Walsh in the top of the fifth. Post 361 picked up their first hit of the night and it opened a flood gate.

the facilities to deal with what is expected to be a large crowd. The day’s events will wrap up with a post-race festival at the track that includes dinner, drinks and live music. “We like racing of all kinds, even two wheels,” Bickmeier said. Though no prize money will be handed out, all finishers will receive a t-shirt and medal. Likewise, awards will be given out to the top three male, top three female and top age-group finishers. “We anticipate a majority of the riders coming from outside the 50-mile distance (surrounding Richmond) to take part in this event,” Lugbill said. “We think in the long term it could be a very significant tourism event
for out community.” Does that mean the ride will bring in national contenders? “We’re not pushing for elite riders,” Lugbill said. “That doesn’t mean some won’t come or some celebrity type riders won’t come. As of this time we don’t have any.” Registration fees for the 102miler range from $95 through Aug. 15, to $115 for walk-up registrants Oct. 5-6; $85 to $105 for the 58-mile ride; $75-95 for the 29-mile event; and $30 to $50 for riders 14 and younger. A $20 discount is available for anyone making a donation of at least $50 to the Richmond bike/walk advocacy program. “Obviously safety is our biggest concern and our number one focus,” she said. “We will have all those things along the course that will help riders get through the race.” For RIR President Dennis Bickmeier, the cycling event is a means to form yet another connection with the Richmond athletic community. “We’re all in the sports and entertainment business and anytime we can continue to connect the dots with other sports activities and events in town, it’s a win for both of us,” he said. The track not only provides a centralized starting/stopping point for the event but also has

Denny Hamlin has mush to talk about By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com As a NASCAR Sprint Cup driver, former Chesterfield resident Denny Hamlin has been to a lot of places and done a lot of things. Last week he took that to extremes. On Monday, Hamlin made his first visit to the Great White North, on a trip to Anchorage, Alaska. For Hamlin, the trip was a welcome break from NASCAR. A week earlier he experienced his first car fire in a 34th place finish in Michigan and the day before the Alaska trip he was knocked out of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 in Sonoma, Ca. to finish 35th. Therefore, Hamlin was in need of something to take his mind off auto racing and he certainly found that in Alaska. In Anchorage, Hamlin met with current Iditarod champion Dallas Seavey to learn the art of
mushing before competing in his first 100-yard dogsled race. “It was amazing to hear about the conditions they go through being anywhere from 40 above zero to 50-60 below zero during the Iditarod run, 1000-mile run,” Hamlin said. “It’s amazing to see what they do on that side and what kind of racing they do and obviously it was a great overall weekend as far as that’s concerned. Made up for the ontrack stuff that didn’t go so well.” Hamlin also provided a rare NASCAR visit to the 1300 employees of the Anchorage FedEx hub. “Living in Anchorage, Alaska, they don’t get to see a whole lot of racing, nor do they get to see their driver too often. So it was an exciting time for them,” Hamlin said. The weather wasn’t the best for Hamlin to get his first impressions of scenic Alaska, but he was still impressed by his surroundings. “It almost feels like a
different country that you’re in,” he said. “You know, the conditions were optimum when we were up there. It was kind of 50 degrees and drizzling and kind of gloomy. But we were only up there for 24 hours and whatnot, so I didn’t get to see all of the things that I would love to see about it. “So, have to make another trip up there to get to experience it, because Alaska, the wilderness and the glaciers and all is what makes Alaska what it is,” he said. From Alaska, it was right back to racing for Hamlin as the Sprint Cup made it second trip to Kentucky Speedway. It was definitely a drastic climate change for the driver, going from the chilly day in Anchorage to a speedway where the air temperature was 106 and track temperatures recorded at 143 degrees. At this time last year, Hamlin was still searching for his first win of the season and far from secur-

One year later, Bickmeier still turning it up RIR president keeping track on top By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com Nearly a year has passed since Dennis Bickmeier arrived at Richmond International Raceway. Bickmeier came to RIR for the first time when he was named president and he has been caught up in a whirlwind ever since. He can sum up the experience in few words. “A blur, Charlie Leffler/The Local
Back in January, Richmond International Raceway President Dennis Bickmeier took part in a tire changing competition at the track. Over his first year in Richmond, Bickmeier has made noticeable changes at RIR with many more on the horizon.
busy, fun, challenging,” he said. “I could go on I guess.” While a lot of changes have taken place at the track over the past 12 months, little has changed for Bickmeier himself. “I’m just like I was then,” he said. “I’m thrilled. I’m honored. I’m excited and nervous at the same time. All of those emotions are still here a year later.” Bickmeier had little opportunity to implement any changes before last September’s NASCAR weekend at RIR but he went into high gear updating the facility with new paint and signage for the Spring race this year. “I think one of the things that struck me early on, we’re an older facility and I keep going back to what can we do to freshen the facility up,” he said.
The need for signs around the exterior of the track was reinforced last fall after an accidental midnight run in with a pair of first time visitors. Following the Saturday race, Bickmeier was evaluating the egress of visitors near the tram plaza when he came upon a perplexed couple. The husband and wife were making their first trip to RIR and completely lost. “They got here right before prerace ceremonies and they were so excited to get here,” Bickmeier said. In fact, they were so excited that after parking then hurried inside the facility without paying any attention as to where they had left their car. With the deductive help of RIR Head of Operations Jeff Hedrick, the couple was able to
locate their car by remembering what type of surface they had parked on; grass, gravel or pavement. But Bickmeier quickly recognized it should have not have been that difficult. “It just really struck a chord with me,” he said. Therefore he worked to have new signage installed around the facility and parking lots so visitors can more easily identify where they are and where they are going. But Bickmier said that has just scratched the surface. “You look at the priority list of things we’d like to do to the facility, it’s a mile long.” Bickmeier said they are currently in the process of prioritizing those wants and needs. “You can’t make them happen if you don’t know what

“I feel I didn’t do that good,” Walsh said. “I was throwing strikes they were just hitting me pretty well. They’re a good team. They’re good hitters.” With the lead, 361 brought VCU pitcher Matt Lees to the mound in relief. Though trailing for only the second time this season, Mechanicsville was not fazed. “That’s where they’re showing a lot of character,” said Coach Eddie Gates. “This has probably been, since I’ve been coaching, one of the best groups for showing character. When they get behind they don’t let it bother them. They just keep battling. That’s a tremendous asset to the game.” That character came through in the top of the fifth. Michael Thomas led things off by reaching third when he blistered a shot through the glove of Tutwiller at second. Thomas then tied the game on a Chris Childress sacrifice to right. Lowry and Keeler singled then Hall was hit by a pitch to load the bags. Next up, Johansen

sent a shot to short but Stien pulled off the bag at first and Lowry came home to give Mechanicsville a 5-4 lead. Allen Ellis relieved Walsh in the top of the seventh and further backed his status as the best closer in the league. “I feel really confident with him coming in behind me,” Walsh said. With one out, Ellis got in a 30 hole facing Woods but roared back with three straight strikes. He then struck out Lane on four pitches. Post 175 added insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. One out walks of Andrew Knizner and Thomas signaled the end of Lees’ night but Mechanicsville was not slowed by Gonzalez as a reliever. Childress hopped a shot over Tutwiller at second allowing Knizner to score, then he and Thomas came home on a single up the middle by Lowry to create the final margin. Post 175 then closed out the game in style. With one out in the top of the ninth, Ellis walked Lloyd who advanced to second on a groundout by Jack Click.

coming off two straight DNFs, we are not overly excited about, but we were just single digits from the points lead a few weeks ago. “We are happy about where we are at,” Hamlin said. “I think that we still need to be a little bit better on performance; if the Chase were to start right now. But I think that all of the teams, that feel petty secure as far as the Chase is concerned, are kind of more than likely timing the Chase to where they are bringing their best race cars to the racetrack come September.” Hamlin’s thoughts were also on rumors that former NASCAR champion and current points leader Matt Kenseth may be making the move to JGR. “If there was anyone I would consider myself closest
to as far as driving style, I would say it would probably be Matt,” Hamlin said, pointing out that Kenseth would be a great addition to the JRG team. “He just brings so many assets I think to a race team,” Hamlin said. “Obviously, he’s got a lot of history over in the Roush organization and has had tons of success there. So he’s going to be a valuable asset wherever he goes and anybody would be lucky to have him.” Hamlin’s performance on the track at Kentucky heated up along with the temperature. Running near the front for most of the night, Hamlin settled for a third place finish but rose back to fifth in the Sprint Cup points standings. Prior to the race, Hamlin announced via Twitter that he had signed an extension with Joe Gibbs Racing.

Then with Stien swatting away foul shots in an attempt to drive Lloyd home, Ellis quickly spun, delivered a strike to Knizner at second to pick off the runner and end the game. “That was a good pickoff play,” Keeler said. “That was a good way to end it.”
Two nights earlier Mechanicsville came away with a 9-1 win at Post 184B. On Saturday, Post 175 took a 6-0 in the second inning over visiting Ashland Post 206 before the game was suspended due to storms. Mechanicsville played at

the priorities are.” Another challenge is determining what the full impact of changes may be. “If you change something in the midway, what’s the trickle down? Or if you change something in the parking lot, what’s the trickle down,” Bickmeier said. “Does that impact two miles from here, your traffic pattern, if you change a gate.” Making a connection with the fans was also a major priority for Bickmeier when he arrived in Richmond and though the process has evolved from email to Twitter and Facebook, it too has been an overwhelming success. RIR is also reaching out to fans who have not been to the track in years; not only inviting them back, but updating them on the changes and asking why they left in the first place. “That’s the other part that’s going to be positive too,” Bickmeier said. “It might not be something that we we’re wanting to hear but we’re going to have to use it to make improvements to get fans coming back.” Storm Damage at RIR Like most of Mechanicsville, Richmond International Raceway did not escape storm damage last Monday when powerful winds and heavy rain struck their area. A section of the metal fence around the Owner/Driver lot was bent over and trees suffered broken limbs throughout the facility. However the biggest damage was the result of heavy rains in the new grandstand that overwhelmed the drainage system. “That was ¾ inch of rain in 30 minutes,” Bickmeier said. “Our drains couldn’t handle that.” As a result water poured into the elevator shafts creating minor damage.
‘Mini’ brings mission to Capital City Speedway
Photos by Dave Lawrence/For The Local
On Saturday, “Mini” Timmy Tyrell, a mini-celebrity in his own right, came to Capital City Speedway in Ashland to raise funds for charity. Above: “Mini” Timmy Tyrrell gets ready for a practice run on the track at Capital City Speedway. Above right: “Mini” Timmy Tyrrell, left, pitches in at the fundraising table. At right: “Mini” Timmy Tyrrell and some of his fellow drivers autograph a checkered flag.
7-year-old raises money for charity in go-kart event By Dave Lawrence For The Mechanicsville Local Severe weather may have squelched the racing, but it failed to douse the charitable spirit at Capital City Speedway on Saturday night. That’s because “Mini” Timmy Tyrrell, an aptly nicknamed 7-yearold and rising third grader at Haydon Elementary School in Manassas, showed up to “Burn Rubber to Help Another,” and fans of go-kart racing responded in kind. Timmy has been racing to help others for a year and a half – a long time for a fairly recent arrival to planet Earth. He treats fundraising as a mission that began when his friend, Ella Day, was diagnosed with brain cancer. “When she was diagnosed, I wanted to help,” Timmy said. “That was my mission. … I wanted to race my go-kart to raise money for people with cancer.”
Timmy and his parents, Timmy and Tina Tyrrell, partnered with Woodbridge-based Inspired Athletes, an organization that helps amateur athletes raise money for charities. The Tyrrells first selected the Jeffrey Virostek Memorial Fund. The fund, named for a Chantilly boy who died from cancer in 2003, helps families of children with cancer pay living and other expenses not covered by insurance. They worked with the Virostek fund for a year, from March 2011 to February 2012, and raised $29,000 – then NBC Nightly News stepped in. The story of “Mini’s Mission,” by correspondent Anne Thompson, aired nationally and got the attention of NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon. Timmy got an invite to meet Gordon at Martinsville Speedway. Because of rain, he did not get to go around the track, but he did get to sit in Gordon’s car. He also began raising money for the Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation. Timmy has raised $5,500 so far, but has set a target of $250,000. Despite the money, press, and ties to sports celebrities, Timmy is a typical
boy. Between practice runs at Capital City Speedway Saturday, he sheltered from the heat in an RV filled with family and friends, drinking “Cool Blue” Gatorade and having trouble concentrating on an interview – much less sitting still – for more than a few seconds. For him, the fundraising is not work – it is more like fun-raising. He likes to go fast, and has been racing go-karts since he was 4. “I saw my dad going out on the track – my dad did road courses,” Timmy said. I wondered what it would be like to do it in go-karts, do it on an oval.” Even though Timmy started his charity because of a friend, most of the people he has helped are strangers. “The really cool thing about him is that he really doesn’t need to see the face of those he’s helping,” Tina Tyrrell said. The statement was apt, Saturday, for the target of the night’s effort, 23-yearold Ervin Wible of Fredericksburg, was not present. Wible, diagnosed at age 16 with paraneoplastic syndrome – an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s defenses developed in response
to a cancer attack on normal cells in the nervous system – was returning from treatment at Memorial SloanKettering Cancer Center in New York when the Amtrak train he and his father were riding on was stopped in Philadelphia because of storm-related track damage to the south. Wible’s mother, Ginger, did make it to Ashland. Unbeknownst to the Wibles, family friends David and Carol Henderson of BDL Motorsports in Fredericksburg told the Tyrrells about Ervin’s illness, and the Tyrrell’s called. “They called us on the phone and said ‘David was telling us about your son and we want to help.’ ” Ginger Wible said. “We were excited and just floored.” The funds raised have been a big help to the family who have to make repeated trips from Fredericksburg to
New York. “This has been a long battle, for us seven years,” Ginger Wible said. “It has been a lot of travel. There’s only so much insurance pays for. Travel isn’t one of them.” Timmy is not limiting himself to go-kart racing. He plans a kickball tournament in Manassas in the fall. But Saturday, he was focused on going round the dirt oval with three competitors, including Ryan Matthews of Mechanicsville and Joshua Knighton of Montpelier. They got in a few practice runs before severe thunderstorms moved into the area. Still, he accomplished his mission, raising $1,047 for the Wible family. “It’s a little overwhelming, people’s generosity,” Ginger Wible said. “It’s an overwhelming response to someone they don’t know and never met.”

Alexander Technique teacher Jo Ann Widner of Mechanicsville recently attended the 25th Annual Conference and General Meeting of the American Society for the Alexander Technique held at the Juilliard School in New York City May 30-June 3. The Alexander Technique has long been used by musicians, dancers and actors to improve performance and prevent repetitive strain associated with long hours of practice. Classes in the Alexander Technique are a part of Juilliard curriculum. Widner took along a copy of The Mechanicsville Local to the Juilliard School.
Strengthening Families program starts July 10 Are you baffled by your teen’s behavior? Has communication become frustrating? Are you worried about your child’s choices? Do you want to improve your relationship with your middle schooler? You are not alone. The adolescent years can be a time of great turmoil and confusion for families. Suddenly, effective parenting strategies no longer work and relationships are strained. What happened? Beginning on Tuesday, July 10, Hanover Community Services Board joins with other county agencies to offer a free program called Strengthening Families. It is designed for any
family with children ages 10 through 14 years old. Strengthening Families is unique because it is designed for the whole family. Parents meet to learn about adolescent development and share ideas that work, while the teens learn their own set of skills. Then the two groups join together to practice what they’ve learned and have some fun together. Younger siblings also have a supervised group of their own. Parent topics include Using Love and Limits, Making House Rules, Encouraging Good Behavior, Using Consequences, Building Bridges, and Protecting against Substance Abuse. Teen topics focus on healthy decision making, friendships,
handling frustration, and communication. The teen activities are fun and interactive . . . this is not like a class at school! Strengthening Families is a free program and dinner for the family is included. Reserve your space by calling Dana Gaskin, parent educator, at 365-4238 before Monday, July 9. Strengthening Families will meet weekly at the new Hanover Community Services Board office located at 9734 Atlee Commons Drive in Ashland, . The classes will meet from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, starting July 9,and ending on Aug. 21. Information submitted by Tom Harris, Hanover County public information officer.

Crew of local Sonic Drive-In advances in being among best Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com The Sonic Drive-In crew at 6555 Mechanicsville Turnpike in Mechanicsville is one step closer to qualifying for the National Finals of the 19th annual Dr Pepper SONIC Games, the annual competition recognizing the best Sonic Drive-Ins in the country. The Mechanicsville Sonic is one of 300 remaining driveins striving to become one of the Final 12 teams to participate in the Dr Pepper Sonic Games National Finals held in San Antonio this September. “The Top 300 crews are
the best of the best within the SONIC system,” said John Salama, vice president of training for Sonic DriveIn. “We’re extremely proud of these crewmembers for their hard work and dedication to providing extraordinary customer service.” Crews participating in the Dr Pepper Sonic Games take on challenging team and individual competitions and quizzes. The Olympic-style competition spans nine months and tests crewmembers’ expertise in the areas of Carhop (food delivery), Fountain (drink prepa-
ration), Switchboard (service delivery), Dresser, Grill and Swamp (food preparation). The Top 300 will be narrowed to 48 crews this month. Those 48 drive-ins then compete in competitive quizzing events and other qualifiers to determine the Final 12 crews who will receive all-expensepaid VIP trips to San Antonio for the National Finals Sept. 10-11. Days later, Sonic’s top executives will honor Final 12 crews and medal winners at the Sonic National Convention in front of more than 3,000 franchisees, managers and employees.

Rural Point Elementary School’s SCA recently conducted a donation drive during a two-week period to support the Ronald McDonald House. Pennies, shampoo, dental products and DVDs were collected. The students raised $667 and sent 11 cases of supplies to the Ronald McDonald House in Minneapolis, Minn., where one of Rural Point’s students is staying while receiving medical treatments.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 You are torn between two choices, Taurus. Family matters are on one side and work responsibilities are on the other. It may take a few days to work out a decision. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 It’s difficult to contain all of your energy, Gemini, so instead you can choose to share some with others. Try tackling some other people’s projects until your energy wanes.
CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Some people may view you as being selfish this week, Cancer, but you view your actions as putting yourself first for a change. Either way, it’s a decidedly “you-centered” few days.
LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Vacations tend to bring the relaxed side out in a person, and it can be hard assimilating back into your regular routine. You, however, have no problem getting back into a groove.
LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 While some people are revved up with energy, Leo, you will seem to be stuck in neutral this week. Don’t fret too much about it unless you have deadlines you need to meet.
SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Turning a hobby into something that makes money is an admirable goal, but it will take a little work, Scorpio. Don’t give up too easily as it could take a few months to solidify.
VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, these next few days you will want to do activities that put yourself first. Whether it’s a date or simply alone time, enjoy it and stop neglecting your needs.
SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, you may be adept at finding an easy way around a difficult thing, but sometimes taking the harder road offers good life lessons along the way.
CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 When money issues arise, the only way to remedy them is to stop spending. This could involve taking a hard look at your lifestyle and what you may not be able to afford. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Everyone expects you to dole out the advice, Aquarius, but this week you will be looking for your own. It could be because you have been tackling so many projects lately. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 There are few things that escape your attention, Pisces. However, this week you will be blindsided by certain news.
THIS WEEK’S ANSWERS
ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 You can have all the inspiration in the world, Aries, but without solid financial backing, your enterprise will not find its wings. Spend your energy finding investors.
