anover resident Curt Lovins was selected as one of 10 people recognized in a special feature in the August issue of The Family Handyman, read by 4.6 million people each month, to honor his prowess as a “DIYer” (Do It Yourselfer) involved in public service. “DIY is a way to provide a comfortable, safe and enjoyable home for those we love while saving money,” said Ken Collier, editor-in-chief, The Family Handyman. “For some, the spirit of helping others has not only fueled their passion for DIY, but has shaped their entire life. They’ve served our country, their local communities, their neighbors and the needy, at home and abroad. We thought it was important to highlight some of these stories in The Family Handyman.” Lovins, who served 20 years in the Marines, is a fulltime firefighter for Henrico County and an avid volunteer with his church, the local YMCA, Habitat for Humanity, and the rest of his community, including friends, family and neighbors. From his time spent serving others, Lovins’ most inspirational experience occurred while he was working on small goodwill projects in West Africa as a Marine. “One time we were moving heavy furniture out of hospital rooms, and, despite being seriously ill, the patients

It’s good for you, and you can’t hurt yourself,” Dodd said, adding that it’s a lot more fun to do water aerobics with other people. Claire McBride said, “I love

it. It’s good exercise, and we laugh a lot.” She said many of the women met during Bible study classes. Barbara Wilkins has participated for about six years along with her teenage daughters. “They used to tease me that it was an old lady thing, but now they hate to miss it,” she said. On a recent sunny morning, the women went from throwing underwater karate kicks and punches to Zumba dancing to Rockette-style leg kicks all timed to the beat

of “New York, New York,” “Hot, Hot, Hot,” “Under the Boardwalk,” “Splish, Splash, I Was Taking a Bath,” “Surfing USA,” and other lighthearted summertime tunes. Each participant pays $55 each summer to cover the cost of instructor Diane Weinstein, who has taught water aerobics at the University of Richmond, Kings Charter and Burkwood Swim & Racquet Club. Weinstein said the workout burns about 400 calories an hour. “The water provides resis-

tance, and no matter what you do, it works,” Weinstein said. “It’s especially good if you have any ailment such as arthritis or you’re recovering from surgery or broken bones.” By the end of the workout, they had stretched and exercised every muscle in their bodies at their own pace, and there wasn’t anyone who wasn’t smiling. They all agreed that the workout is beneficial in terms of building stamina, but especially in terms of growing friendships and having fun.

Not to be used for identification purposes Back in the “old days” (code for my youth), there wasn’t a rush to obtain a social security card — until you were approaching the age of 16 and the opportunity presented itself to become a licensed driver. It was just before “Sweet 16” arrived that I made the obligatory trip to the Social Security Office in my hometown. That was when downtown meant something more than the name of a Petula Clark song. (That’s today’s quiz for those under 40. Look her up.) Once that card was in your hands, it was like a magic wand swept over and you had officially entered the adult world. At least that was the feeling at the idea of sliding behind the wheel of a car and hitting the open road. OK, maybe it wasn’t so open, but the days of riding the school bus were a thing of the past. Anyway, those nine numbers have taken on a life of their own these days. OK, it’s understandable that your employer needs those numbers — we’re paying into the system (with the dream of actually getting something in return someday). But, for several years, those nine numbers — especially the last four — readily verify who we claim we are in dealing with service providers. A recent issue with a utility started with the automated system and my options to continue with the call. Now, when numbers are involved, I’m lucky to remember phone numbers (due in part to “Contacts” lists in SmartPhones). So, it’s a given I have no idea what my account number is. That’s why I have to run those nine numbers through my head so many times — because the final four will give you access to the world you need. The amusing part of all this is the fact that the card states “Not to be used for identification purposes.” Really?!

Henry District fortunate to have Sean Davis as representative The residents of the Henry District in Hanover County are very fortunate to have Sean Davis representing us on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. He is a man of action and gets things done. I have been living next to a half burned down garage for almost four and a half years. The neighbors and my family have had to look at it each day. I have contacted “12 On Your Side,” written letters to the county building inspector, but no one followed through to see the problem resolved. I contacted Mr. Davis and things started to happen. Mr. Davis has called me several times, keeping me advised of what was being done on this problem. As of this writing (July 27, 2012), the garage has been torn down and is no longer an eyesore for the neighborhood. All I can say is, “Thank you, Sean Davis,” the man of action. Congratulating writer for stand on Obama’s term and policies I would like to congratulate one of your recent letter writers, LaToya Brown, on an intelligent and well thought out letter about the failures of Barack Obama. Usually with the least little criticism of Obama, we are pounced on by the liberal media and called racists. Fortunately, they can’t do that to LaToya Brown, who is of the same race as President Obama. Unlike many in the African-American community, Ms. Brown is not influenced by skin color but by the horrendously bad and destructive policies that she has seen Obama put forth in his first three and a half years in office. Can you imagine the catastrophe he will bring on our country if he is re-elected and does not have to stand for reelection and answer to the American people again? Remember when he whispered to the Russian president that when he is re-elected he will be able to make more deals with the Russians? Ms. Brown talks about all the failed promises of Barack Obama but even worse than his failed promises are the promises that he has kept. He promised a new health care system and he kept that promise, giving us government-run, terribly expensive ObamaCare with death panels, less choices and inferior health care.

He promised to let gays openly serve in the military and he kept that promise with the result that our military has been greatly weakened and the morale is at an all-time low as is the enlistments and re-enlistments. He promised us that every woman would be able to get free or affordable methods and procedures for abortion and he has kept that promise too. Now any woman has the affordable means to murder her baby any time she wants, resulting in more thousands of precious pre-born babies being killed every year. It must break the heart of God and His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to see so many of His beautiful children brutally destroyed through abortion. The recent extreme heat wave and violent storms, with millions losing their power and the many floods and fires throughout the country . . . Do you think God is trying to get our attention or punish us because of our wickedness and sinfulness, especially that of the murder of innocent children through abortion? I could go on and on but Ms. Brown’s letter says it so much better. Ms. Brown says at the beginning of her letter, as I say at the end of my recent letter, “Wake up, America.” And how important that command is. For, if we don’t wake up and stop Obama in his tracks, we could wind up like one of the Socialist, bankrupt European countries or, even worse, like one of the Marxist, people-enslaving countries of the Communist world. I pray that every fair-minded and right-thinking American like LaToya brown, whether white or black, Democrat or Republican, conservative or liberal, will wake up and realize what peril our beloved country is in under Obama and especially if he is re-elected in November. We all need to determine with all of our strength to get out and vote this president out of office for the survival of our great country. Thanks to the ACLU, People for the American Way, Planned Parenthood and other radical leftist organizations, this is no longer the America our Founders envisioned. From their earliest days, radical leftist organizations knew that a tectonic shift toward socialist, ultraliberal and extremist ideologies could not take place while America’s pulpits were “aflame with righteousness.” Their strategy: Snuff out the flame’s influence little by little . . . gradually . . . almost imperceptibly . . . ultimately silencing people of faith in the public square . . . and all the while indiscernibly changing the course of the nation. Eventually the tectonic shift took place – and now Americans are looking back and wondering what happened! This is not the America our Founders gave us. The fact is, America’s greatness has always been rooted in the fundamental values taught from America’s pulpits. If pulpits are silent, the church is silent. John Richard Gauntt, passed on July 28, 2012 at his niece Judy’s house in Mount Holly, N.J. A resident of Mechanicsville for 12 years, he was born July 10, 1918 in Mount Holly, N.J. He graduated from Rancocas Valley Regional High School in 1937.

Katrina Lynn Gauntt and Garrett LeClerc Gauntt; his dogs, Sherri and Zepp; and many nieces and nephews. He served the government in Seattle, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. In retirement, they lived in Poquoson, Va., Washington, N.C., and Wilmington, N.C., and wintered in Tucson, Ariz., before finally settling in Mechanicsville, Va., to be near their grandchildren. He went to his home town of Mount Holly in August of 2011 to recover from injuries, where he was cared for by his devoted niece, Judy Gauntt. During his lifetime, he was both a Mason, and an Elk, and enjoyed reading, bowling, chess, tennis and snow skiing. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling, often by cruise ship. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012 at Fairfield Presbyterian Church, 6930 Cold Harbor Road, in Mechanicsville, Va.

He received his undergraduate degree in History and French at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 1941. He joined the U.S. Army, and was in World War II, and spent two years in the Aleutian Islands as a Lieutenant in the artillery. Upon his return, he entered law school and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1950. John retired in 1978 from a distinguished law career with the IRS and Department of Justice. At one point he reported to the Assistant Commissioner of the IRS and was one of the top technical advisors on wills and trusts and maritime law. He was a member of President Richard Nixon’s Law Advisory Team, the Price Control Board and Council to Congress’ Tax Forms Committee. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall recommended John for admission to practice before the Supreme Court. John’s parents were Philip LeClerc Gauntt, a veterinarian, and Elizabeth (Bessie) Collins Gauntt, both of Mount Holly, N.J. In 1943, John married Ruth Sabra Reese of Wilmington, N.C. She passed in 2008 after 65 wonderful and devoted years of marriage. That conversation was about meat loaf. As promised at that time, managing editor Melody Kinser now shares her mother’s meat loaf recipe. Hazel M. Kinser knew very little about cooking when she married in 1951. Her recipe collection and her skills in the kitchen have expanded greatly throughout the years. (not sausage) and ground veal. Our A&P store carried a package with all three meats in it and, since veal can be hard to find, I started making it with ground chuck and ground pork only. Every time I make one for a church dinner or for our consumption, it goes very quickly. I would suggest that mashed potatoes and peas are great dishes with this meat loaf. Do save some for a great lunch sandwich the next day!

MEAT LOAF Ingredients: ❍ 1 pound ground chuck ❍ ½ pound ground pork ❍ 1 egg, beaten ❍ 1 small green pepper, diced ❍ 1 small onion, diced ❍ 4 slices bread, wetted and broken up ❍ 6 saltines (crushed) ❍ ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste) ❍ ½ teaspoon pepper (or to taste) ❍ 1 cup ketchup (maybe more as you mix up)

and looks to a future in the music industry. His video going viral was just the start to a music career that Dennehy needed. His video was featured as video of the day on AOL.com and SportsIllustrated.com. He was featured on websites around the world, including newspapers in

Australia, Greece, Canada and the Huffington Post. He’s trending worldwide on Twitter and doing online interviews with websites such as whatstrending. com and rightthisminute.com. “I guess a lot of people just saw it from there (on Reddit). I don’t know. It just happened,” Dennehy said. “Websites everywhere were just grabbing it.” He is a frequent guitarist in the Worship Band at The Church on the Avenue in Richmond and he also plays at many churches in the Richmond area and at the Ashland Farmer’s Market. He’s soon set to perform on a much bigger stage. A few months ago, Dennehy auditioned for and competed in Richmond’s Got Talent. He won and many are encouraging the 18 year-old to try out for next season’s hit television program, America’s Got Talent. However, his biggest honor to date came last week when a member of the American Rock Band “The Goo Goo Dolls” contacted him and asked if he

Tenn., to work on recording a few songs and making his first video documentary. “I’m headed to Nashville in a couple weeks because a professional songwriter and musician contacted me and he and one of his friends, who is also a professional songwriter, are going to write a few songs for me,” Dennehy said. “They are going to make a documentary on the whole thing and feature it on their new website called youinspire.org.” After that, Dennehy said he isn’t quite sure where his journey will take him. He does have interviews scheduled with radio and television shows. He said a TV crew from Romania is coming to Virginia in a few weeks to film him for a program. Then, he will travel to Romania to fin-

ish the show and perform. An aspect that makes Romania so special is that Dennehy was born there and adopted as a young child. So, the visit to his native land will provide him the opportunity to connect with his biological family after 17 years . “It’s awesome and it’s more than I could ever dream of happening in a few short days,” Dennehy said. “It’s very overwhelming and just crazy.” For now, Dennehy said he is staying grounded and thankful for everyone in the Ashland community that has supported him along the way. “Thank you to everyone for posting and sharing my video on Facebook or Twitter,” Dennehy said. “It’s awesome and I want to make this town proud.”

Former CMS teacher takes part in classroom crime scene program Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com Jana Burch, former Gifted and Talented Resource Teacher at Chickahominy Middle School, recently was an instructor at the University of Connecticut’s premiere summer conference for educators. Burch, along with Dave McGann and Kevin Simms, presented “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in the Classroom” at Confratute, the week-long summer program hosted by the University of Connecticut. “My students were always interested in solving problems and mysteries. CSI is popular with people of all ages . . . the proof is the number of television shows and books dedicated to this subject,” Burch said. “But in the classroom, you can’t just bring popular topics without a strong connection to what you want the students to learn. Math and science skills are a part of the CSI lessons we wrote for Confratute, but we add to that the opportunity for students to use 21st Century Thinking Skills such as critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration and communication.

Horace Robert Watts Jr. She is survived by her four children, Betty Carol Watts Presgraves of Rural Retreat, Va., Donna Gail Watts Hepner of Montpelier, Va., Robert Kern Watts of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Lee Allen Watts of Coppell, Texas; and their families, including eight grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren. Lillian was born October 23, 1919, in Richmond, Va., the only daughter of Roy Mumford and Fannie Bancalari Allen. Lillian and Horace were married in December 1940 and lived in Richmond until 1964 when they moved to Huntington, W.Va., where Horace served as General Chairman of the United Transportation Union. After Horace’s retirement in 1982 he and Lillian returned to Virginia to enjoy their retirement years. They joined Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Beaverdam on October 13, 1985. Lillian was very active in her church where she taught Sunday School for over 20 years. The family received friends Monday, Aug. 6, 2012 at Bliley’s - Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Rd. Kevin, Reilly and Raegan Tapper recently visited Syracuse, New York. They were visiting the Carrier Dome, home of the Syracuse Orangemen and took the Mechanicsville Local with them.

The 2012 Miss Mechanicsville Scholarship Pageant selected MCEF (Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Functions) as its beneficiary. MCEF helps Mechanicsville families through financial hardship by offering financial assistance, food, clothing and household repairs. On June 26, Miss Mechanicsville Evangel Panicker, Junior Miss Mechanicsville Sloan Minor and Little Miss Mechanicsville Olivia Grau presented Lynn Saunders of MCEF with a check for $3,500. The Miss Mechanicsville Scholarship Pageant Foundation also presented the Mechanicsville Little League Challenger Division with a check for $500. The division provides about 30 children ages 5 through 22 with intellectual and physical “challenges” the opportunity to enjoy and play baseball.

HPI taking applications for new year The Hanover County Public Schools Hanover Preschool Initiative (HPI) is accepting applications for the 2012-2013 school year. HPI is a free, full-day preschool program with an experienced teaching staff that enables students to engage in an exciting curriculum and a stimulating learning environment. School bus transportation is available in most areas. Meals and supplies are provided. HPI is available to children who will be 3 or 4 years of age by Sept. 30, 2012. All proceeds for this event will be used to support Hanover Humane’s adoption, education and prevention programs.

The Mechanicsville Lions Club recently prepared eyeglasses for recycling. Members shipped more than 200 used eyeglasses to the Lions Club Recycling Center in Roanoke. At the Recycling Center, Lions Club volunteers clean, sort by prescription, strengthen and package the glasses for distribution to people in need in developing countries. According to the World Health Organization, 153 mil-

lion people have uncorrected refractive errors (near-sightedness, far-sightedness or astigmatism). Most of these vision impairments are quickly diagnosed and easy to treat with corrective lenses. Still, millions of people in developing nations are pushed deeper into poverty simply because they don’t have glasses. They can’t learn, because reading is difficult. They can’t work to the best of their ability, because they can’t see clearly. In addition to eyeglass recycling, the Mechanicsville Lions

Club provides assistance to persons in need of glasses in the Mechanicsville area. The club expects to recycle about 2,000 pairs of glasses collected in Mechanicsville this year. The main collection box is located at the Mechanicsville Drug Store with other boxes thru out the area.
