Last Wednesday during a visit aboard the USS Eisenhower nuclear aircraft carrier, NASCAR driver Carl Edwards, left, took a moment to talk with MMC Select Jeremy Jackson of Mechanicsville. Working as a nuclear mechanic, Jackson has been stationed aboard the Eisenhower since January 2009. He is a 2002 graduate of Lee-Davis High School. Jackson, who said he is the world’s biggest NASCAR fan, is shown asking Edwards to autograph a wooden storage box. For more on Edwards’ visit, see the story and more photos on page 40.

Officers gather at Virginia Beach in February for a Polar Plunge, which finds them jumping into the Atlantic Ocean. Their time in the icy waters may be brief, but sponsors support their efforts with donations. To be chosen for the trip to Greece, Carter submitted a letter of interest. Each application is reviewed, he said, and the state representatives are selected based on criteria established by the organiza-
tion. Having never visited the Greek Islands, the lieutenant was excited about the opportunity of representing his state, as well as to see firsthand a nation known for its beauty and history. “We were moving every day; it was rare we stayed in one location,” Carter added. They flew into Athens for the opening ceremonies — “all the law enforcement officers from around the world arrived.” After two days there, they “broke up into three separate routes. “My see DEPUTY, pg. 5

At that time, three miners’ lanterns were lit from the torch for the teams to carry through the various communities. On each stop. OPINION | The Local Views From the editor
Postings offer some good advice as school resumes On Sept. 6, Hanover County Public Schools will open for the start of the 2011-2012 term. With that in mind, it’s been interesting to see the number of comments posted on Facebook pertaining to the treatment of students. The first read: “Special request to all you kids returning to school in the next few days: If you see someone who is struggling to make friends or being bullied because he/she doesn’t have many friends or because they are shy or not dressed in the most “in” clothes, please step up. Say hi or at least smile at them in the hallway. You never know what that person might be facing outside of school. Your kindness might just make a big difference in someone’s life.” It ended with “Parents should repost this.” Then there was a post about bullying. “The girl you just called fat — she has been starving herself and lost over 30 pounds. The boy you just called stupid has a learning disability and studies over four hours a night. The girl you just called ugly — she spends hours putting on makeup, hoping people will like her. The boy you just tripped — he is abused enough at home. There’s a lot more to people than you think. Put this as your status if you’re against bullying.” In a society that sometimes seems to have an unending mean streak, these are statements worth considering — and implementing. If you’re a popular student, please think about the one who wants to be. Yes, something as simple as a “good morning” can make such a difference. Everybody wants to fit in. Only we can make that happen.
Etc.

Congratulations, Mrs. Smith
Thank goodness we failed
I would like to thank you for the excellent story “Number-cruncher adds up to 100.” It spoke beautifully about a great lady and a great family in our community. I have met Mrs. Louise Smith, but I know her son Charles and her granddaughter Kimberly referred to in the article very well. They are not only top-notch mechanics, they are people of impeccable character. Everyone who knows them knows that is true. Auto mechanics is a field in which the old adage “Let the buyer beware” often becomes the over-riding issue. In 15 years of doing business with the Smith family, that concern has never raised its head for me or anyone I know. I believe they will do right if it costs them money. I am sure Louise Smith had a lot to do with helping to develop that kind of character. They are certainly proud of her, and I am sure she is of them. My congratulations go to Louise Smith with good wishes that the best is yet to be. Thank you for the article. Dr. Fred R. Skaggs Mechanicsville

schools hit benchmarks.” As a state, the Commonwealth of Virginia failed to make AYP. The article went on to include a table showing that even the esteemed schools of Hanover County had dropped significantly in their passing rates; we’ve declined by nearly 20 percent since last year’s tests were administered. Herein lies a lesson in statistics, for which credit must be given to my statistics teacher at Lee-Davis High School: You can manipulate the numbers to say anything you like. Typically, the first grade or score that comes to mind when one hears “failure” is an “F.” Most places consider an F a score of 69 percent or less. In the current NCLB testing cycle, a score of 85 for math and 86 for reading is required to pass each subject. So, an 84, which is a middling “C” in most schools, is a failure in both subjects. To add to the situation, overall pass rates were little changed from last year. The overall change was limited to one percentage point in either direction, up to 89 percent in reading/writing but down to 87 percent in math. One has to ask, “To what end?” when hearing of such results. As I mentioned, we can manipulate the results and their presentation to read either “doom and gloom” or a somewhat smug reporting of Hanover County’s continued superiority over other school systems. Here’s how: Last year, 19 of 23 Hanover Schools passed AYP benchmarks. This year, 15 did. If I take the negative route, I can say “Hanover County testing results show nearly 20 percent decline in passing rates.” People respond most to even increments, so the 17.3 percent change is rounded to the nearest 10. Want to spin it the other way to cast Hanover in a positive light? Report this instead: “Hanover County pass rates
significantly exceed Central Virginia’s average.” Since at least 65 percent of Hanover County schools did meet the benchmark scores compared to the abysmal 38 percent overall rate, this statement is also a true accounting of the results. When we can present the numbers either way depending on how we want to be perceived as a county, what concrete and objective purpose do these tests serve? More importantly, what do they mean for our students and children? Fewer opportunities to explore their world, unnecessary anxiety and less critical thought. Teaching to the test has become the mantra pounded into the heads of educators statewide ever since the introduction of the Standards of Learning. I can recall when the SOLs first appeared on the scene and my teachers were suddenly required to write on the chalkboard which standards were met by the day’s lesson. In this environment, how can a teacher’s enthusiasm, creativity or ingenuity be expressed? Without these guiding forces in the classroom, how can students model these positive approaches to education in their own studies? If you have not noticed, field trips have all but evaporated and it isn’t just because of gas prices. In terms of the effect this stifling rigidity has on students, look no further than the bus stop. If you have ever seen the downtrodden, drained face of a child who has just done an SOL practice test, you know exactly what I mean. I remember talking to my sister about it. She is nearly four years my junior, so the tests were not optional for her grade. The tests, practice or not, took up an enormous block of her day, not all of it even spent testing. The incessant commands of “Pencils down,” “Turn to page X,” and “Stop when you get to page Y” add untold minutes to the monotony. Some sections even required teachers to read
all questions and answers aloud. Have a friend read this letter out loud to you while you try to do a crossword puzzle and tell me how well you focus. What is most insidious about the tests is my final point. Everything is multiple choice. Rather than reaching their own conclusions through critical thinking, students are taught that the answer is there — they must simply eliminate the wrong answers until the “best choice” remains. Multiple choice cannot demonstrate mastery of language or writing skills nor can it show a solid understanding of the concepts behind solving a match problem. This does not prepare students for any job, whether immediately following high school or after years of college. At best it promotes lazy thinking, at worst an absolute helplessness when faced with a challenging problem or situation. It does not bode well for the future of innovation when individuals undergoing the current testing practices expect all the answers to be laid out before them. Life may not be a multiple choice test, but Hanover County’s newly-selected superintendent, Dr. Jamelle Wilson, is afforded that luxury. In light of the state’s failure, superintendents are faced with the following options: A) Continue to push students to succeed on meaningless, federally-mandated tests or B) Allow Hanover’s stellar educators to teach their students the type of skills needed to become successful adults. Pencils down, Dr. Wilson. Did you pass? Erica M Lawler Mechanicsville

God is the only judge
After reading recent letters to the editor, it would seem that many need to read or re-read their Bible more thoroughly. It is so discouraging to see the moral principles of the Bible called “judgment” and “hatred.” And it is even more distressing when some Christians go along with that. Christians should know more. Despite claims to the contrary, to date, no scientific evidence has been found that homosexuals are born that way. In fact, homosexuality is in direct conflict to God’s creation. God is a God of order, not chaos. To make these statements is not judging and it is not hateful. These statements expound what the Bible says. Who judges immortality? Lifestyle? Sin? God! God is the only JUDGE and He will judge us all on Judgment Day. But He does not leave us to decide what sin is. He has told us in His Word what things are sin. It is up to each one of us to choose God’s way or our own way. We are free to choose our hearts desire but there are consequences to our choices! Tolerance? God is tolerant, giving us all time to make our choices and time to change our minds. How much time? Only He knows. Love? God loves each and every human being who ever was, who is or who shall be. Acceptance? God I would like to sincerely accepts all who come to Him, thank you for the wonderful who repent of their sins and ask article that you wrote about me for forgiveness. in The Local. see LETTERS, pg. 15 I have never been on the

LETTERS Continued from pg. 8
Usually, tolerance and acceptance are interjected to imply fairness but what they really mean is, be tolerant and accepting of homosexuality. Where is the tolerance and acceptance of Christian morals and values? God has told us that in His Word what things are sin. The Bible says that homosexuality, adultery and fornication (sex between unmarried people) are sins. And it does not end there, the Bible also says: to Ignore or Forget God is Sin, Loving other things or People more than God is Sin, Using God’s name as a curse word is a Sin, Not observing Sunday for Worship and a Day of Rest is a Sin, to Dishonor your Parents is a Sin, Murder and Stealing are Sins, All Lying is Sin, to Desire to possess what belongs to others is Sin. If you disagree with any of these things then you are not
angry with me, you are angry with God! God charges all of us to study the Bible for ourselves (2 Timothy 2:15); you will find that repentance from sins is absolutely necessary for forgiveness and salvation. God tells us in His Word about Sin and Repentance for sins, and consequences for refusing to repent, for unbelief and for rejecting His Salvation plan. God is Love but that is only a part of who He is. He is also a Just God and He will not tolerate sin! All sinners are condemned to Hell regardless of what sin they are guilty of. The only chance to escape Hell on Judgment Day is to learn about and accept God’s salvation plan for yourself. I believe that homosexuals should be treated with respect and courtesy. We should all have respect for one another just because God loves us all. However, I do have concern
for homosexuals; in particular if they believe that their sin of homosexuality is not an issue with God. God has issue with all sin. I didn’t say it was sin, God did. Sin is not failing to hear the gospel. Rather, “sin is the transgression of the Law.” (1 John 3:4) While homosexuality is the topic, the real issue is: Do Christians care about lost sinners in danger of going to Hell? Will we tell them that they are sinners who need to repent of their sins and ask God for forgiveness? Will we tell them that Jesus Christ paid for their forgiveness on the cross to save them from going to Hell? If we really care about lost sinners, we will tell them the Truth and also tell them the good news of God’s forgiveness in Christ to them — regardless of whether they are homosexuals or some other sinner. At the moment, you may not be interested in what the
Bible says but on Judgment Day your circumstances will radically change. Then it will be too late. Claudine Rellihan Mechanicsville

Feel-good sermons Intentionally, there are many references to “you” in and out of quotes in this article. The “you” refers to homosexuals and the many variations thereof. I have several questions. Why do you say the Christian’s God, who is The Creator, made you the way you are and why would He do such a cruel thing as to make you that way and then put in His Book (the Bible) that unless all sinners (that includes “you”) repent and turn from their wicked ways, He will not hear from us in Heaven? Why would He call you “unclean”

*No-closing-cost option is limited to lines of credit up to $100,000 and requires auto debit from an EVB checking account. New equity line customers only. Effective July 11, 2011, and supersedes any other or similar offers. The Annual Percentage Rate (APR) on your line of credit will vary depending on the type of loan you qualify for, underwriting criteria and the combined loan-to-value ratio (CLTV). As of July 11, 2011, the WSJ prime rate was 3.25%. For example, as of July 11, 2011, a home equity line of $50,000 at an interest rate of Prime plus .24% (with a floor of 3.49%) or 3.49% APR was available for well qualified borrowers with a maximum 80% CLTV. Schoolhouse Rock, Live! comes alive with HAAC The Hanover Arts & Activities Center’s fifth season of Children’s Musical Theatre this summer featured Schoolhouse Rock, Live! Led by veteran — and volunteer — director Lorie Foley, assistant directors Patrick Warren and Kara Lefever and choreographer Karen Lynne, the cast of 36 children from third through eighth grades delighted the audience with a toe-tapping walk down memory lane Aug. 5, 6 and 7. A free outreach performance for 200-plus children from local daycare and summer camp programs also was presented. At the Center, cast members were involved in all aspects of theatre and stage performance – from set and program design to painting, to percussion. In addition, while having fun singing and dancing, the children also learned about, among many other topics, the U.S. Constitution, gravity, geography, history and math. Pianist Fred Horn provided the musical framework and musical instruction that carried

and that you will not enter His Kingdom? Why did He make you that way and then turn on you? And, if you were made that way the Christian’s God, why do you show your displeasure to Him by having those “operations” to change whatever it is you think you are changing? Did you say He made you the way you are? What’s with the operations, hormones, change of dress and appearance (even though you can’t do anything with those hands, neck, feet, voice and unnatural walk)? Can’t you see the god you serve is different from the God of the Christians? Therefore, there is nothing wrong with you, just take the confusion out of it all by using the lower case “g” when speaking of your god and then it will make perfect sense because your god (Satan) is faithful in making you the way you are, “loving” and not “judging” you. The “you” god
is very pleased and wants you to bring in many others to take the journey. You do know what I mean by “the journey?” You do know what place all sinners and the rewards that await you, right? Have you noticed the “churches” you attend make no reference to sin nor does the pastor teach from scriptures such as Romances 1:18-32? Next time you attend, ask why. Much appreciation and thanks to Claudine Rellihan and the others who are trying to do the Will of God, which is to seek and save the lost. Please read Claudine’s letter again and just maybe it will speak to your heart. Our God did give us choices and He stands ready to forgive all sinners if you will only repent and turn from your wicked ways. Please accept His free gift of salvation. The penalty has been paid. Our God of Heaven did give us choices and made it clear that the road to heaven is narrow and there will be but a few on it. After
reading other letters, all I could do was weep. I never thought there was anyone so ignorant of God’s Word that they would have the nerve to dispute Him. Do you not understand it is the Almighty Creator God speaking and through His chosen men/women who pinned His Word and not us giving our opinions? This is what you get when pastors teach cute feelgood sermons that teach the people absolutely nothing about the wrath of God as well as His love. I know this grieves the heart of Jesus after all He went through for us. Jean Grantham Mechanicsville

If we could just pass these two clowns off as jokes and go on, it wouldn’t be so bad, but they are far worse than harmless clowns. They are dangerous men who are doing great harm to our country. Barack Obama has wrecked our economy, wrecked our health care system, is about to wreck our military by allowing open homosexuality, and is trying to destroy our families by pushing the sinful samesex marriage agenda. This has
nothing to do with hating gays as has recently been debated in The Local. Christians, whom I am one, don’t have anyone except the devil. God’s Word makes it clear, however, in numerous places in the Bible that homosexuality is a sin and that those entrapped in this sin should be prayed for and loved out of this destruction. How sad that most progay people don’t know the difference between lust that gays have for each other and true and pure love that a man has for a woman. When we try to point see LETTERS, pg. 21

The Cherub School, a preschool for children ages 2½ to 5, is now enrolling students for the 2011-2012 school year. The school is a nonprofit ministry of Immanuel Episcopal Church at 3263 Old Church Rd. in Mechanicsville. Established in 1988, the school has served hundreds of children in Hanover, New Kent and King William counties. About 60 children are enrolled each year. School director Joy Morgan said, “We think learning should be fun. Our goal is to facilitate children’s learning by providing an enjoyable and enriching environment. We focus on social, emotional, physical and academic skill development.” All children are welcome. Religious affiliation is not required. The maximum ratio of students to teachers is never more than 10 to one; it’s eight to one for 2½ year olds. During the day, children move with their group every 30 to 40 minutes into different rooms designated for activities in dramatic play, language arts, math games, science exploration, art, and story time. All age groups meet in Immanuel’s parish house from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, September through May. Programs are available for two, three or five days a week, depending on the child’s age: 2½year-olds: Meet Tuesday and Thursday. Children must have been born between Oct. 1, 2008, and March 31, 2009. Hurricane Irene may be heading toward region By Jim Fields jfields@mechlocal.com Hurricane Irene might be taking aim at Richmond and eastern Virginia this weekend. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) projects the eye of Irene will be just off the southern tip of Florida by midday Thursday, and then has the eye hitting land at 8 a.m. Saturday alone the southern South Carolina coast. Irene could also affect Georgia and North Carolina. The eastern boundary of Irene is expected to stay over the Atlantic, and how the eye reacts to land will determine how much rain and wind she delivers once she comes ashore.

Employees help deputies foil robbery Boy Scout needs help
Opening to be held at Windemere
Two Richmond men were arrested and charged with grand larcenry and conspiracy to commit grand larceny on Thursday following an incident around noon in the Kroger at Rutland Commons on U.S. 301. Capt. Michael J. Trice of the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office identified them as Brian R. Davis, 20, and Quinn L. Davis, 25, both of the 3100 block of Carolina Avenue. Deputies responded to the store at 9351 Atlee Road in reference to a black male that had taken a purse from the shopping cart of a Kroger customer. The suspect, later identified as Brian Davis, fled the store on foot while being pursued by Kroger employees who had been alerted about the theft.

to finish Eagle project
The employees continued to chase Brian Davis through the parking lot and into the adjacent Rutland neighborhood. During the chase, Brian Davis, ultimately discarded the purse and ran full circle back to the Kroger parking lot, where he was seen getting into a vehicle. That vehicle was stopped by deputies at U.S. 301 and Atlee Station Road. Brian Davis was taken into custody at that time. Trice said Quinn Davis was driving the vehicle. “Together the employees of Kroger and a number of citizens contributed to the recovery of the victim’s property and the quick apprehension of both suspects,” Trice said. Speaking on behalf of Col. David R. Hines, sheriff, he added, “Excellent teamwork!”
Austin Gulasky of Boy Scout Troop 531 is completing his Eagle project and needs the community’s help. He is collecting donations in the form of supplies and donating them to the Laurel Shelter Inc., a domestic violence shelter that serves the Middle Peninsula of Virginia. He will be accepting items

The FPU, taught by Dave Ramsey, teaches families and individuals common-sense principles like how to make a plan with their money so they are able to free themselves of debt and build lasting wealth. It is available for churches, military, nonprofit agencies and businesses. Ramsey said he knows first-hand what it is like be broke and hopeless. Because of his experiences, he decided to help other people change the way they handle their money. More than one million families have taken the course since Ramsey began teaching FPU in 1994. The course, taught by Ramsey on DVD, is made up of 13 lessons that will change the way you handle your money.
After each lesson there is a small group discussion that provides accountability and encouragement. Topics include saving for emergencies, budgeting, relationships and money, and getting out debt. Each participant needs a kit. Special rates are regularly available on daveramsey.com or by calling 888-227-3223. Included in the cost of the kit is a lifetime family membership to FPU, allowing the participant to return to any class at anytime for a refresher course. The kit also includes an FPU workbook, an FPU envelope system, 13 audio lessons, bonus CD, budgeting forms, debit card holders, and Ramsey’s best-selling book – Financial Peace. traversed the narrow corridors and nearly vertical stairways of the craft to meet up with the Eisenhower’s top officers. Captain Marcus Hitchcock provided Edwards with a warm welcome then gave a quick rundown of his vessel’s current mission- training F-18 pilots to land and take off from an aircraft carrier in preparation of deployment overseas. “It’s day and night,” Hitchcock said. “We go to about 2 a.m. every morning.” Edwards was then suited up in safety gear and escorted back the flight deck where he stood scant feet away as F-18s made tailhook landings and takeoffs via catapult launch.
On the open ocean, a steady stiff wind blows across the flight deck, trip hazards are everywhere and there is no railing to prevent someone from accidently falling, or as everyone was warned, being blown off the deck, by wind or jet turbulence. The result of which would be a 100 foot plunge to the ocean below. Though known for his adventurous spirit, even Edwards was daunted by, not only the level of speed, but the dangers each of the sailors face in everyday life. “They let me go up there and stand right next to the F18s while they were landing and taking off,” an amazed Edwards
said. The experience also gave Edwards a different perspective on his own sport. “I guess in a lot of ways right now I feel like a race fan,” he said. “I saw Top Gun when I was a kid and thought it was the coolest thing I’d ever seen in my life. “I watch the Discover Channel and the History Channel and watch shows about these aircraft carriers,” he said. “To stand there right next to the catapult launch and to stand next to the arresting cables and stuff and to see it happen, it’s got to be what the fans feel like when they stand next to the fence and seeing NASCAR for the first time.”
Because the Eisenhower is currently in and out of port on training missions there is the possibility it will be docked in time for the races at RIR. “A lot of these guys will be out there at Richmond, which will be really cool to know that while we’re out there driving they’re experiencing our sport the same way I’m experiencing their lives,” Edwards said. Edwards then returned below decks to the cavernous #2 hanger bay where he spent the majority of his day signing autographs and talking with each of a long line of sailors. “It’s crazy,” Edwards said. see EDWARDS, pg. 41 `
Golf season could be a horse race coach Chris Pace feels parody is the keyword this year. “I think the Capital District is wide open this year,” Pace said. “Atlee graduated a bunch of guys and so did we.” The Hawks are young but they have experience, albeit limited. “We’re replacing two collegiate level golfers, so we won’t post as low scores as we did last year,” Pace said. Hanover’s number one player Phillip Hudson and number two Chris Melton tied for best score at the Crossings with a 38 as the Hawks edged out Atlee 156-174. “It was a big match for us, and we felt like if we could get a win today playing from the
whites, it would be difficult for them to get a split with us when we meet here next month,” Pace said. Number three player Justin Lynn turned in a 40 along John Hare. Atlee is rebuilding after graduation claimed its top players, but head coach Jamie Edwards sees some possibilities for his young Raider squad. “People have all sorts of NASCAR stuff. I saw a couple of #99 hats and I met people from all over the country. There were folks from Missouri. One guy, his sister went to the prom with my brother, so I’m almost related to guy here, that’s crazy.” But overall, Edwards felt surprised at the level of interest in NASCAR among the Eisenhower’s crew. “It’s amazing how many of these folks follow our sport and love NASCAR.” Nicholas Deweese easily fell into that category. In 2009, the E-6 out of Chesapeake, Va. was named the second biggest NASCAR fan in the country by the Official NASCAR Members Club. Though an avid Dale Earnhardt Jr. fan, Deweese was just as happy with Edwards’ visit. “NASCAR is NASCAR,” he said. “We get a driver out here it doesn’t matter who it is.” But even Deweese was not above a little traditional NASCAR digging. “It’s better than Kyle Busch, that’s for sure.” Deweese still holds a grudge from the 2009 race at RIR where

Carl Edwards was surprised with a birthday cake in the mess hall of the USS Eisnehower. Edwards had turned 32 the day before his visit to the aircraft carrier.
Busch spun out Earnhardt on the final laps. Though he holds no official NASCAR title, Mechanicsville’s Jeremy Jackson considered himself of even higher standing than Deweese. MMC Select Jackson is a nuclear mechanic that has served aboard the Eisenhower since January of 2009. “I’m probably the world’s biggest NASCAR fan,” he said. “I’m a Jeff Gordon fan but when I was told Carl Edwards, I was giggling like a kid at Christmas…Jeff Gordon’s my favorite driver but just anybody could have come out here and I’d just be tickled pink.”
The 2002 graduate of LeeDavis High School got his chance to talk with Edwards and have a wooden storage case autographed. “It’s awesome that they’d come out here,” Jackson said. “We have some distinguished visitors come out and stuff like that, but he is by far the coolest that’s come out here.” Jackson tried to relate just how important visits, not only by Edwards, but also the contingent following him, are to the military. “It lets you know, out of his busy schedule and all of you taking time out of your schedule, to come out here and visit and you get to see the
ship under way,” Jackson said. “See how we kind of do things under way. It means a lot to me personally. Some people really don’t approve of the military but to have you all come out here, it reminds us that people still care.” Though the level of speed and excitement of aircraft carrier life may be the same in NASCAR, Edwards said there is really no comparison between the two. “What we do is fun,” he said. “We go out and race. We do it in weather that’s nice. We have rules and all these things. These guys are out here and they’re ready for anything. This is real. It’s a hostile environment for a number of reasons. There are a lot of similarities but this is serious, there’s a lot on the line.” In the mess hall, Edwards was presented with a cake and the complimentary singing of ‘Happy Birthday,’ by crew members. Edwards visit then wrapped up with his biggest thrill of the day; a catapult launch of the C2 for the trip back to Norfolk. The steam powered catapult accelerated the transport plane from zero to 128 mph in three seconds.
“They told me that plane was 53,000 pounds at take off,” Edward said. “Fifty-three thousand pounds they accelerated like that! I deal with a lot of speed and acceleration but nothing like that, that was crazy.” Back on the ground in Norfolk with his delayed birthday surprise complete, Edwards was left with a great appreciation for the men and women who serve in the military. “It’s
R
just spectacular what these sailors are out here doing,” he said. “They’re sacrificing and putting themselves in a very high risk environment for our country and it’s an honor that they had us here today. It’s really amazing to see. “When I’m sitting in my racecar this week (at Michigan), I’ll be thinking about these guys watching from an aircraft carrier,” he said. “That’s pretty cool.”

By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent Picking a winner in this year’s Capital District golf race is no easy task because all three Hanover teams have a legitimate chance at a championship. Last week, two of those contenders met up at the Crossings for the second time this season. All four county schools met earlier in the week for the Hanover Quad at Hanover Country Club. Atlee hosted Hanover and Glen Allen a day later at the Crossings for a nine-hole match. Hanover finished first in the Quad and the Crossings competition which places the Hawks in the early season driver’s seat in the district. Hanover

Visit at sea was a once in a lifetime experience By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com I had mixed emotions when I was invited to join the Carl Edwards media contingent on a trip to the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier. I’ve never enjoyed flying. In fact, I sometimes get downright nauseous at the thought and this would definitely not be a typical commercial flight. Instead it involved a landing and takeoff aboard an aircraft carrier. Cue stomach turn. Still, I could not overlook the fact that this would be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Some of my friends were envious but others responded with a heartfelt, ‘Glad it’s not me.’ It did little to calm my nerves upon reading the first paragraph of the liability release form I received. “Catapult launches from, and arresting landings aboard, aircraft carriers at sea are inherently dangerous and involve substantial risk of injury or death.” As if that was not bad enough it went on to include; “Naval aircraft are designed for the typical age and physiological characteristics of Naval aviation personnel, and may involve additional risk for personnel of other ages and physiological characteristics.” As much as I hate to admit getting old, I’m pretty sure I fell in the later category. Then of course the real kicker was the Next of Kin form. Furthermore, the plane ride was not for those who are claustrophobic or suffer from motion sickness. Naturally, I occasionally battle both. I signed at the bottom with a voice in my head screaming, ‘And you still want to do this? Are you crazy?’ Yet, on Tuesday morning I found myself sitting inside a VIP lounge at the Norfolk Naval Base listening to disquieting safety instructions from

one of our pilots- a guy with the call sign of “Frenchie” who looked eerily like “Goose” in the movie Top Gun. All the while I’m thinking, ‘Goose died in that movie, didn’t he?’ There were 12 of us in all. Edwards and his PR rep, a Speed TV crew, DJ Rick Ramble, WRIC’s Yainni Kourackis, a group from RIR and myself. “Frenchie” instructed us that not only do the seats on the C2 Greyhound face backwards but there is no air conditioning and it would be very noisy. He also emphasized that the C2 was far from a commercial flight by stating we could possibly see steam or hydraulic fluid dripping during the trip- just what every nervous flyer likes to hear. Next, to add to the level of anxiety, I was suited up with necessary safety equipment; cranial helmet, goggles and floatation vest, with accompanying dyemarker and whistle, (just in case we survive a crash into the ocean). Somehow I ended up being one of the first to board the plane by the rear ramp, which was the equivalent of entering a noisy cave. Bending under the low ceiling, I made my way a few feet down the narrow aisle, two seats to a side, and settled in beside RIR President Dennis Bickmeier. He seemed to be a good person to sit next to because this was second flight to an aircraft carrier, having also done so years earlier with the Anaheim Angels. With Bickmeier’s assistance, I finally managed to latch the complicated cross harness and settle into my seat, heart pounding as the rear ramp sealed us inside. The interior of the transport was well worn and utilitarian- nothing pretty but something that gets the job donehopefully. There were only two small windows the size of cantaloupes a few rows ahead of me.

The little bit of light inside the cabin entered through them, but the outside world was not visible from my angle. The plane began to taxi and that was when I first noticed the steam seeping up through the floor of the craft. A drop of hydraulic fluid hit my left arm, then another. Beside me, Bickmeier had dozed off. The cramped darkness with no view of the outside world was disorienting and it was difficult to sense which direction we were heading but it seemed like we were going to taxi all the way to the Eisenhower. Eventually we took off and something strange came over me. I was remarkably calm. Somewhere along the way I came to the realization that while this was a grand adventure for me, it was merely a drive to work for the military personnel aboard. It wasn’t long before I too was dozing. Nearly an hour passed see VISIT, pg. 43 `

before the announcement came that we would be landing in 15 minutes, then to get a small taste of commercial flight, we were put in a holding pattern for a half hour. In the virtually windowless cabin I could feel the descent but had no idea when touchdown would take place. When it did, it came abruptly and was somewhat like bottoming out your car on a back road then hitting the brakes REALLY hard. But because I faced backward, the seat absorb most of the shock. When the rear ramp lowered and I exited the plane I quickly understood I was entering a different world. Bright light, a blast of air and heat assailed me as I stepped onto the deck of the USS Eisenhower. The exhaust from the jet engines nearby easily lifted the temperature over 100 degrees despite the steady Atlantic wind blowing across the flight deck. A sailor from Chicago later told me that when stationed in the Middle East, the temperatures reached 160 degrees on the flight deck while the humidity was so heavy it caused rain inside the hangers. A quick trip three decks down to meet the command staff was followed by more safety instructions, equipment and a return to the flight deck. Outfitted in a white turtleneck to protect my clothing, white floatation vest to protect me from drowning, white cranial to protect my head and goggles to protect my eyes I was overcome by the sensation that I was entering a very dangerous environment. On the flight deck that was narrower than the length of a football field, I stood at the 30yard line and watched as one after another F-18 touched down across the 50. The arresting cables reeled out of the deck less than a foot away emphasizing how good these pilots

are to pull off such a pinpoint landing. On the opposite end of the deck 1000 feet away the catapult launch was no less thrilling or dangerous; feeling the exhaust heat, the overwhelming noise and the blast of thrust as the F-18’s rocketed off a little over a dozen yards away from where I stood. I then followed Edwards to the hanger deck where he greeted a line of sailors that stretched down and across the cavernous chamber. It surprised me that these sailors seemed just as pleased that the rest of us were there along with Edwards. Wherever I went, sailors wanted to talk to me and ask me as many questions as I had for them. I learned that by coming to the Eisenhower we had joining the likes of the Harold and Kumar, the Harlem Globetrotters and the cast of Avatar, who had also visited the craft. However, our visit while the vessel was under way was a rare occasion. But without a doubt, the biggest surprise of the day surfaced

later in the mess hall when from behind me came a question I never would have expected 200 miles out to sea. “Are you from the Mechanicsville Local?” Out of the 3200 sailors aboard, I was greeted by MCC Select Jeremy Jackson, a graduate of Lee-Davis High School, whose parents Carl and Linda live less than a mile from the Mechanicsville Local office. Like everyone else I met, Jackson was very appreciative of our visit and how much the support meant to sailors. “It means a lot of me personally,” Jackson said. “Some people really don’t approve of the military, but to have you all come out here, it reminds us that people still care.” The visit wrapped up with a return to the command crew where each of us was presented with mementos from our once in a lifetime experience. Then came more safety instructions for the return flight; the most dangerous, physical and mentally stressful event of the day. Earlier in the mess hall we were given specific instructions to prepare for our first catapult launch from an aircraft carrier. “Get something on your stomach, but don’t eat a lot and don’t eat anything greasy.” Suited up in a floatation vest, cranial, hearing protectors and goggles, I climbed back aboard the C2 to quickly discover the

year for us,” Edwards said. “We lost Tanner Foutz last year and our team only has one senior and two juniors, so we’re down a little bit this year.” Even with the youth and inexperience, the team has already turned some heads this year with a third place finish in the Chesdin Landing match. “We surprised a lot of people and surprised us. We played well and may have overachieved a little bit in that tournament, but it was a good experience for us.”
temperature inside had climbed considerably since exiting earlier in the day. I quickly belted myself in and tighten the straps but somehow the cross buckle that should have been over my belly button ended up near by hip. The crewman who assisted us took one look at it, shook his head, rolled his eyes and just made sure it was tight. There was no time to redo my mess. As he continued on to make certain everyone else was secure, I nervously checked and rechecked the harness to make certain I was immobile. Once again blind to the outside world, I could sense the nervous tension in the craft as it bumped its way across the flight deck and into launch position. The engine roar built to near deafening levels and the crewman pumped his fist into the air three times signaling that it was time for me to cross my arms over my chest, clench the harness, brace my feet against the seat in front of me and tuck my head forward. And…pray. The steam generated catapult rocketed the 53,000 pound C2 from zero to 128 mph in three seconds. For me it was similar to the takeoff of the Volcano ride at Kings Dominion, except in this case I was facing backward and pulling more Gs. “Fifty-three thousand pounds they accelerated like
that,” Edwards said dismayed. “I deal with a lot of speed and acceleration and stuff like that, but nothing like that, that was crazy.” The roaring blast was followed by a cushion of air as the plane took flight and I thought, ‘Oh, that’s not so bad.’ But there were more unexpected thrills to come. A minute later without warning the C2 suddenly went into an insane climb forcing everyone into their harnesses once again. In the disorienting darkness of the cabin, the look of surprise and uncertainty was visible on many faces as the plane started to roll over into a banking dive. The one calming factor was the crewman in the back who looked on with bored disinterest. I later learned that the C2 was merely clearing the takeoff corridor from the carrier so F-18s could continue their training. Across the aisle, Edwards, who is also a pilot, unbuckled his seat belt and headed forward. Moments later one of the pilots came to the back and I was unsure if she had been dismissed by the NASCAR driver for that crazy maneuver. “I can’t tell you what we did up there,” Edward said. “But I learned a lot and had a lot of fun.” Unfortunately the flight back
Edwards was disappointed in his team’s performance at the Hanover Quad but said the season could be the up and down variety. Atlee will count on Thomas More and Brandon Hunt to anchor the top two spots on the roster. Freshman Levi Brizendine is locked in at number four, and junior Sam Bean will occupy the number three position. After the top four, Edwards is still searching for the right combination. “I told my team I wanted to get everyone in a match to get their feet wet and by next week, I will have
done that.” While Atlee and Hanover squared off at the Crossings, Lee-Davis took on Prince George at Jordan Point Country Club. Coach Kenny Lewis’ squad posted a 160 for nine holes and took the match on the road, but Edwards and Pace said the Confederates’ biggest advantage might be of the home field variety. “Queensfield is like their Cameron Indoor. They play exceptionally well out there, so it will be a hard place to get a win,” Edwards said. “They are almost unbeatable at Queensfield,” Pace said.
was not nearly as pleasant as the trip out, but then again it wasn’t designed to be. Dripping with sweat due to heat, the bumpy flight seemed to take hours. There was no possibility of dozing on this flight but it gave me plenty of time to reflect over what the military endures on a daily basis. After exiting the plane back in Norfolk, it took a while to absorb the events of the day. What I thought would be a thrilling adventure turned into an eye-opening experience. What we consider daring and dangerous is an everyday life of routine to the military. However, the one thing these strong men and women cannot provide for themselves is a constant reminder that they are not off in the world alone. We think of the physical sacrifices every person in the military make to secure our freedoms, but the physiological toll is high as well. Though at ease facing hazards every day of their lives, they are separated from family and loved ones and need reassurance that they are not forgotten. Edwards summed up the memorable day best. “It’s a reminder of what our armed services are out there sacrificing.” -and a memorable lesson from a once in a lifetime experience. “They really have a home field advantage on that course.” Although Lee-Davis may hold a slight advantage on paper, one match could determine the final results and Pace said the win against Atlee could provide a leg up for his squad. “We need to steal one somewhere along the line, and this was a big one for us today.” Hanover 156, Atlee 174,Glen Allen 192 (9 holes at The Crossings, par 36) H: Hudson 38, Melton 38, Justin Lynn 40, John Hare 40.
