Oak Knoll Middle School invites parents and students to attend Orientation Nights, which will include schedule pick-up and school fee payment. Orientation for rising sixth graders will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31, and for rising seventh and eighth graders from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1. Postings oﬀer some good advice as school resumes On Sept. 6, Hanover County Public Schools will open for the start of the 2011-2012 term. With that in mind, it’s been interesting to see the number of comments posted on Facebook pertaining to the treatment of students. The first read: “Special request to all you kids returning to school in the next few days: If you see someone who is struggling to make friends or being bullied because he/she doesn’t have many friends or because they are shy or not dressed in the most “in” clothes, please step up. Say hi or at least smile at them in the hallway. You never know what that person might be facing outside of school. Your kindness might just make a big difference in someone’s life.” It ended with “Parents should repost this.” Then there was a post about bullying. “The girl you just called fat — she has been starving herself and lost over 30 pounds. The boy you just called stupid has a learning disability and studies over four hours a night. The girl you just called ugly — she spends hours putting on makeup, hoping people will like her. The boy you just tripped — he is abused enough at home. There’s a lot more to people than you think. Put this as your status if you’re against bullying.” In a society that sometimes seems to have an unending mean streak, these are statements worth considering — and implementing. If you’re a popular student, please think about the one who wants to be. Yes, something as simple as a “good morning” can make such a difference. Everybody wants to fit in. Only we can make that happen.

Thank goodness we failed

I would like to thank you for the excellent story “Number-cruncher adds up to 100.” It spoke beautifully about a great lady and a great family in our community. I have met Mrs. Louise Smith, but I know her son Charles and her granddaughter Kimberly referred to in the article very well. They are not only top-notch mechanics, they are people of impeccable character. Everyone who knows them knows that is true. Auto mechanics is a field in which the old adage “Let the buyer beware” often becomes the over-riding issue. In 15 years of doing business with the Smith family, that concern has never raised its head for me or anyone I know. I believe they will do right if it costs them money. I am sure Louise Smith had a lot to do with helping to develop that kind of character. They are certainly proud of her, and I am sure she is of them. schools hit benchmarks.” As a state, the Commonwealth of Virginia failed to make AYP. The article went on to include a table showing that even the esteemed schools of Hanover County had dropped significantly in their passing rates; we’ve declined by nearly 20 percent since last year’s tests were administered. Herein lies a lesson in statistics, for which credit must be given to my statistics teacher at Lee-Davis High School: You can manipulate the numbers to say anything you like. Typically, the first grade or score that comes to mind when one hears “failure” is an “F.” Most places consider an F a score of 69 percent or less. In the current NCLB testing cycle, a score of 85 for math and 86 for reading is required to pass each subject. So, an 84, which is a middling “C” in most schools, is a failure in both subjects. To add to the situation, overall pass rates were little changed from last year. The overall change was limited to one percentage point in either direction, up to 89 percent in reading/writing but down to 87 percent in math. One has to ask, “To what end?” when hearing of such results. As I mentioned, we can manipulate the results and their presentation to read either “doom and gloom” or a somewhat smug reporting of Hanover County’s continued superiority over other school systems. Here’s how: Last year, 19 of 23 Hanover Schools passed AYP benchmarks. This year, 15 did. If I take the negative route, I can say “Hanover County testing results show nearly 20 percent decline in passing rates.” People respond most to even increments, so the 17.3 percent change is rounded to the nearest 10. Want to spin it the other way to cast Hanover in a positive light? Report this instead: “Hanover County pass rates

significantly exceed Central Virginia’s average.” Since at least 65 percent of Hanover County schools did meet the benchmark scores compared to the abysmal 38 percent overall rate, this statement is also a true accounting of the results. When we can present the numbers either way depending on how we want to be perceived as a county, what concrete and objective purpose do these tests serve? More importantly, what do they mean for our students and children? Fewer opportunities to explore their world, unnecessary anxiety and less critical thought. Teaching to the test has become the mantra pounded into the heads of educators statewide ever since the introduction of the Standards of Learning. I can recall when the SOLs first appeared on the scene and my teachers were suddenly required to write on the chalkboard which standards were met by the day’s lesson. In this environment, how can a teacher’s enthusiasm, creativity or ingenuity be expressed? Without these guiding forces in the classroom, how can students model these positive approaches to education in their own studies? If you have not noticed, field trips have all but evaporated and it isn’t just because of gas prices. In terms of the effect this stifling rigidity has on students, look no further than the bus stop. If you have ever seen the downtrodden, drained face of a child who has just done an SOL practice test, you know exactly what I mean. I remember talking to my sister about it. She is nearly four years my junior, so the tests were not optional for her grade. The tests, practice or not, took up an enormous block of her day, not all of it even spent testing. The incessant commands of “Pencils down,” “Turn to page X,” and “Stop when you get to page Y” add untold minutes to the monotony. Some sections even required teachers to read

all questions and answers aloud. Have a friend read this letter out loud to you while you try to do a crossword puzzle and tell me how well you focus. What is most insidious about the tests is my final point. Everything is multiple choice. Rather than reaching their own conclusions through critical thinking, students are taught that the answer is there — they must simply eliminate the wrong answers until the “best choice” remains. Multiple choice cannot demonstrate mastery of language or writing skills nor can it show a solid understanding of the concepts behind solving a match problem. This does not prepare students for any job, whether immediately following high school or after years of college. At best it promotes lazy thinking, at worst an absolute helplessness when faced with a challenging problem or situation. It does not bode well for the future of innovation when individuals undergoing the current testing practices expect all the answers to be laid out before them. Life may not be a multiple choice test, but Hanover County’s newly-selected superintendent, Dr. Jamelle Wilson, is afforded that luxury. In light of the state’s failure, superintendents are faced with the following options: A) Continue to push students to succeed on meaningless, federally-mandated tests or B) Allow Hanover’s stellar educators to teach their students the type of skills needed to become successful adults. God is the only judge

After reading recent letters to the editor, it would seem that many need to read or re-read their Bible more thoroughly. It is so discouraging to see the moral principles of the Bible called “judgment” and “hatred.” And it is even more distressing when some Christians go along with that. Christians should know more. Despite claims to the contrary, to date, no scientific evidence has been found that homosexuals are born that way. In fact, homosexuality is in direct conflict to God’s creation. God is a God of order, not chaos. To make these statements is not judging and it is not hateful. These statements expound what the Bible says. Who judges immortality? Lifestyle? Sin? God! God is the only JUDGE and He will judge us all on Judgment Day. But He does not leave us to decide what sin is. He has told us in His Word what things are sin. It is up to each one of us to choose God’s way or our own way. We are free to choose our hearts desire but there are consequences to our choices! Tolerance? God is tolerant, giving us all time to make our choices and time to change our minds. How much time? Only He knows. Love? God loves each and every human being who ever was, who is or who shall be. PUE-2011-00082 On July 20, 2011, Virginia Electric and Power Company d/b/a Dominion Virginia Power ("Dominion Virginia Power" or "Company") filed with the State Corporation Commission ("Commission") its Application of Virginia Electric and Power Company fo f r Approval and Certification of Electric Facilities fo f r the Northwest-Lakeside 230 kV f r approval to construct and operate a new 230 kilovolt ("kV") overhead transmission line between the existing Northwest Substation Transmission Line. The Company applied fo and the existing Lakeside Substation, both in Henrico County. The proposed line would extend fo f r approximately 9.85 miles in Henrico County and 1.72 miles in Hanover County. The proposed line will be installed almost entirely on f et to 385 fe f et in width. In its Application, Dominion Virginia Power explained that the proposed line is existing structures on an existing right-of-fway that varies from 100 fe required by the summer of 2013 to provide adequate and reliable service to a growing load. The Company plans to put the line in service in May 2013. The estimated cost of the new line is $16.1 million, and work at substations will cost an additional $2.9 million, fo f r a total cost of approximately $19 million. A detailed description of the location of the proposed fa f cilities is below: The Northwest-Lakeside right-of-fway corridor begins at the existing Northwest Substation in Henrico County and pivots northeast crossing U.S. 250 (Broad Street). Approximately 0.66 mile north of Broad Street, the right-of-fway corridor turns north and crosses Hungary Road about 0.48 mile north of the turn. The proj o ect corridor continues northward fo f r 0.88 mile befo f re crossing U.S. 33 (Staples Mill Road) and then pivoting northeast approximately 0.14 mile north of the Staples Mill Road crossing. Aftfer the pivot to the northeast, the Northwest-Lakeside corridor travels 0.45 mile to the existing Mountain Road Substation, continues northeast f r 0.25 mile, and then makes another turn to the northeast. The proj fo o ect corridor continues 0.86 mile and crosses Interstate 295. Approximately 0.20 mile aftfer crossing Interstate 295, the Northwest-Lakeside corridor turns northward crossing the Chickahominy River and traveling 1.57 miles to the existing Elmont Substation in Hanover County. The Northwest-Lakeside right-of-fway corridor turns to the southeast fo f r 2.57 miles and travels back into Henrico County, crossing Interstate 295. Aftfer crossing Interstate 295, the corridor continues southeast fo f r 1.71 miles and crosses Parham Road. Aftfer crossing Parham Road, the proj o ect corridor f r the continues 1.26 miles to the existing Lakeside Substation. The total length of the right-of-fway corridor fo proposed proj o ect is 11.57 miles. All distances and directions are approximate. A sketch map of the proposed route accompanies this notice. Usually, tolerance and acceptance are interjected to imply fairness but what they really mean is, be tolerant and accepting of homosexuality. Where is the tolerance and acceptance of Christian morals and values? God has told us that in His Word what things are sin. The Bible says that homosexuality, adultery and fornication (sex between unmarried people) are sins. And it does not end there, the Bible also says: to Ignore or Forget God is Sin, Loving other things or People more than God is Sin, Using God’s name as a curse word is a Sin, Not observing Sunday for Worship and a Day of Rest is a Sin, to Dishonor your Parents is a Sin, Murder and Stealing are Sins, All Lying is Sin, to Desire to possess what belongs to others is Sin. If you disagree with any of these things then you are not

angry with me, you are angry with God! God charges all of us to study the Bible for ourselves (2 Timothy 2:15); you will find that repentance from sins is absolutely necessary for forgiveness and salvation. God tells us in His Word about Sin and Repentance for sins, and consequences for refusing to repent, for unbelief and for rejecting His Salvation plan. God is Love but that is only a part of who He is. He is also a Just God and He will not tolerate sin! All sinners are condemned to Hell regardless of what sin they are guilty of. The only chance to escape Hell on Judgment Day is to learn about and accept God’s salvation plan for yourself. I believe that homosexuals should be treated with respect and courtesy. We should all have respect for one another just because God loves us all. However, I do have concern

for homosexuals; in particular if they believe that their sin of homosexuality is not an issue with God. God has issue with all sin. I didn’t say it was sin, God did. Sin is not failing to hear the gospel. Rather, “sin is the transgression of the Law.” (1 John 3:4) While homosexuality is the topic, the real issue is: Do Christians care about lost sinners in danger of going to Hell? Will we tell them that they are sinners who need to repent of their sins and ask God for forgiveness? Will we tell them that Jesus Christ paid for their forgiveness on the cross to save them from going to Hell? If we really care about lost sinners, we will tell them the Truth and also tell them the good news of God’s forgiveness in Christ to them — regardless of whether they are homosexuals or some other sinner. At the moment, you may not be interested in what the

Schoolhouse Rock, Live! comes alive with HAAC The Hanover Arts & Activities Center’s fifth season of Children’s Musical Theatre this summer featured Schoolhouse Rock, Live! Led by veteran — and volunteer — director Lorie Foley, assistant directors Patrick Warren and Kara Lefever and choreographer Karen Lynne, the cast of 36 children from third through eighth grades delighted the audience with a toe-tapping walk down memory lane Aug. 5, 6 and 7. A free outreach performance for 200-plus children from local daycare and summer camp programs also was presented. At the Center, cast members were involved in all aspects of theatre and stage performance – from set and program design to painting, to percussion. In addition, while having fun singing and dancing, the children also learned about, among many other topics, the U.S. Constitution, gravity, geography, history and math. Pianist Fred Horn provided the musical framework and musical instruction that carried

and that you will not enter His Kingdom? Why did He make you that way and then turn on you? And, if you were made that way the Christian’s God, why do you show your displeasure to Him by having those “operations” to change whatever it is you think you are changing? Did you say He made you the way you are? What’s with the operations, hormones, change of dress and appearance (even though you can’t do anything with those hands, neck, feet, voice and unnatural walk)? Can’t you see the god you serve is different from the God of the Christians? Therefore, there is nothing wrong with you, just take the confusion out of it all by using the lower case “g” when speaking of your god and then it will make perfect sense because your god (Satan) is faithful in making you the way you are, “loving” and not “judging” you. The “you” god

is very pleased and wants you to bring in many others to take the journey. You do know what I mean by “the journey?” You do know what place all sinners and the rewards that await you, right? Have you noticed the “churches” you attend make no reference to sin nor does the pastor teach from scriptures such as Romances 1:18-32? Next time you attend, ask why. Much appreciation and thanks to Claudine Rellihan and the others who are trying to do the Will of God, which is to seek and save the lost. Please read Claudine’s letter again and just maybe it will speak to your heart. Our God did give us choices and He stands ready to forgive all sinners if you will only repent and turn from your wicked ways. Please accept His free gift of salvation. The penalty has been paid. Our God of Heaven did give us choices and made it clear that the road to heaven is narrow and there will be but a few on it. After

The Cherub School, a preschool for children ages 2½ to 5, is now enrolling students for the 2011-2012 school year. The school is a nonprofit ministry of Immanuel Episcopal Church at 3263 Old Church Rd. in Mechanicsville. Established in 1988, the school has served hundreds of children in Hanover, New Kent and King William counties. About 60 children are enrolled each year. School director Joy Morgan said, “We think learning should be fun. Our goal is to facilitate children’s learning by providing an enjoyable and enriching environment. We focus on social, emotional, physical and academic skill development.” All children are welcome. Religious affiliation is not required. The maximum ratio of students to teachers is never more than 10 to one; it’s eight to one for 2½ year olds. During the day, children move with their group every 30 to 40 minutes into different rooms designated for activities in dramatic play, language arts, math games, science exploration, art, and story time. All age groups meet in Immanuel’s parish house from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, September through May. Programs are available for two, three or five days a week, depending on the child’s age: 2½year-olds: Meet Tuesday and Thursday. Children must have been born between Oct. 1, 2008, and March 31, 2009. Hurricane Irene may be heading toward region By Jim Fields jfields@mechlocal.com Hurricane Irene might be taking aim at Richmond and eastern Virginia this weekend. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) projects the eye of Irene will be just off the southern tip of Florida by midday Thursday, and then has the eye hitting land at 8 a.m. Saturday alone the southern South Carolina coast. Irene could also affect Georgia and North Carolina. The eastern boundary of Irene is expected to stay over the Atlantic, and how the eye reacts to land will determine how much rain and wind she delivers once she comes ashore.

Beverly Hall, a bus driver for Hanover County Public Schools, was recognized during the Aug. 10 meeting of the Hanover County School Board for her recent accomplishments at the Bus Road-e-o competitions. Her exceptional driving skills enabled her to receive first place in the state competition on June 23. She has participated in the Bus Road-e-o and has been a top six finisher annually since her employment with the school district six years ago. Her journey to the national competition began at the local event on May, 12. Receiving third place, she advanced to the regional competition, which was held on May 25. A first place award positioned her to compete for the state title for the first time. Employees help deputies foil robbery Boy Scout needs help

Two Richmond men were arrested and charged with grand larcenry and conspiracy to commit grand larceny on Thursday following an incident around noon in the Kroger at Rutland Commons on U.S. 301. Capt. Michael J. Trice of the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office identified them as Brian R. Davis, 20, and Quinn L. Davis, 25, both of the 3100 block of Carolina Avenue. Deputies responded to the store at 9351 Atlee Road in reference to a black male that had taken a purse from the shopping cart of a Kroger customer. The suspect, later identified as Brian Davis, fled the store on foot while being pursued by Kroger employees who had been alerted about the theft.

The employees continued to chase Brian Davis through the parking lot and into the adjacent Rutland neighborhood. During the chase, Brian Davis, ultimately discarded the purse and ran full circle back to the Kroger parking lot, where he was seen getting into a vehicle. That vehicle was stopped by deputies at U.S. 301 and Atlee Station Road. Brian Davis was taken into custody at that time. Trice said Quinn Davis was driving the vehicle. “Together the employees of Kroger and a number of citizens contributed to the recovery of the victim’s property and the quick apprehension of both suspects,” Trice said. Speaking on behalf of Col. David R. Hines, sheriff, he added, “Excellent teamwork!”
