Planners deny Lake District project again By Jim Ridolphi for the Mechanicsville Local HANOVER -- For the second time in eight months, the Hanover County Planning Commission recommended denial of a project that would have changed the complexion of the Route 33 corridor near the Henrico County line. Several commissioners cited concerns regarding density, infrastructure and a perceived focus on residential availability versus commercial development as well as transportation concerns on Route 33. Hanover’s Comprehensive Plan identifies the area as suitable for residential and commercial development and mixed use zoning. The Planning Commission issued a unanimous recommendation for denial last November, and the applicant did not pursue a hearing
with the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. Boyd Homes submitted a revised plan for the Lake District, an area of more than 310 acres located just off Mountain Road near the county line that outlined 86 additional acres for economic development in an effort to alleviate concerns raised when the panel first recommended denial last year. LEADBETTER Revisions to the plan made early this year also reduced the number of residential units to 1,787 and identified more than 300,000 square feet of commercial or light industrial development.
Larry Leadbetter, who represents the South Anna District in which the development is proposed, thanked Boyd Homes for its efforts during the past two years to submit an acceptable plan for county approval. Even with the revised plans that included a substantial reduction in residential units, Leadbetter said he could not support the proposal. “The heartburn I have GEIGER with the project is the high density,” Leadbetter said. “The original concept of why this corridor was changed in see PLANNERS, pg. 4

Animal Control chief: Don’t leave your pet in hot vehicle HANOVER -- In the brutal heat of the summer, Hanover County Animal Control reminds all citizens that leaving your pet in your vehicle for even a few minutes on sunny days – even if the windows are not rolled up – can be critical to them. “A pet can die in only a few minutes if left in a car even with the windows rolled down,” warns Jeffrey S. Parker, chief of Hanover County Animal Control. “Bring them inside or leave them at home, but don’t leave them in a car. Even when it’s only 80 degrees outside and sunny, the inside of a car gets hot very quickly and your pet will become overheated.” On a warm, sunny day, the temperature in a parked car can reach a temperature of 120º in minutes, even with the car window partially open. “A pet can quickly suffer brain damage or die from a heatstroke when trapped in these high temperatures,” Parker said. Parking in the shade offers little protection, as the sun shifts during the day. If your pet is exposed to high temperatures: Be alert for signs of heat stress — heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait, vomiting or a deep red or purple tongue. If your pet becomes overheated, you must lower its body temperature immediately. Move your pet into the shade and apply cool (not cold) water all over its body to gradually lower its temperature. Apply ice packs or

cool towels to your pet’s head, neck and chest only. Let your pet drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. Finally, take your pet directly to a veterinarian — it could save its life. If you see an animal in a car exhibiting any signs of heat stress, call 911 immediately. Hanover County Animal Control will be patrolling certain areas including parking lots looking for pets and other living things that may be in heat distress because of being left in vehicles. If your animal dies as a result of being left in a vehicle, you could be charged with cruelty to animals, which is a
felony and if convicted could lead to jail time and/or a fine. Here are some additional tips for taking care of your pet in hot weather: Don’t force your pet to exercise after a meal in hot, humid weather. Exercise it in the early morning or evening, and keep walks to a minimum. Never leave your dog standing on hot asphalt. Its body can heat up quickly and sensitive paw pads can burn. Do not take an animal to the beach unless you can provide a shaded spot and plenty of fresh water. Rinse it off after it has been in salt water. see PETS, pg. 4

Commissioner Steven Hadra, Chickahominy District, agreed, issuing a concern regarding the commercial aspect of the project. “What’s being considered here is putting in residential first and then hoping the economic development comes later . . . and hoping that will come to fruition,” Hadra said. “I think we need more commercial and less residential,”

Commissioner Jerry Bailey, Henry District, said. An equal number of speakers took advantage of the public hearing to either voice support or opposition to the project. A large portion of the opposition comments were centered around the limitations of Mountain Road and the effects of increased traffic on an already congested area. Brandon Davis, a manager at Tyson Foods, said widening the road along frontage associated with the project would not eliminate serious access problems at the processing facility. The company already employs off-duty patrols to ensure the safety of their employees when entering or exiting the facility during shift changes. Music soothes the soul and fills any void
Reader responds to letter about nominating process
By Melody Kinser Managing Editor
I
love music. And, when I make that statement, it encompasses about everything category -- except maybe classical. Despite being exposed to that genre, I’m not inclined to select it when I’m scanning through my iPhone or tote bags of cassette tapes or a case of CDs. Well, I couldn’t choose it anyway because I don’t own any classical pieces. That being said, I enjoy music on many levels, especially when I’m working. It isn’t loud (like in my vehicle), but it provides an ambience that moves me along in my processes. Even though I’m fast approaching my 63rd
birthday (as in tomorrow), my musical tastes span everything from gospel to rap. And, being a child of the 1960s, there’s plenty if rock ’n’ roll to fill my soul. Last week I came across a video on social media of Chubby Checker singing and dancing to The Twist. The image of Dad’s second oldest brother -- who was, without question, a delight to be around -- teaching my cousin and me to do The Twist came to mind. I immediately shared it with Celeita. We grew up close because I’m five months older than her. We always spent a lot of time together, and both enjoyed the company of Uncle Julius. He was a party, to say the least. My 45th class reunion was last weekend, but
I was not able to make arrangements to attend. I know there was a lot of scrambling to get music from the 1970s and 1980s for the event. I’m re-energized whenever I turn on music and think back to various times in my life. It seems as though there is a song for every occasion and memory. When I was younger I thoroughly enjoyed going out clubbing. It was all about the social aspect -- and dancing. I loved to dance. While many dismiss the disco days, the music had its moments of sheer fun. In closing, I must say that I so appreciate the importance of music in Hanover County Public Schools. Music fills the soul and educates too. And the beat goes on . . .
Taking the plunge has a different meaning in Niagara Falls By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist It’s easy to appreciate the unbridled power of Niagara Falls, and it’s a great place for a family vacation, a spectacle that has stood the test of time. A glance at the natural wonder on television portrays a vision of unbelievable fury and offers a small view of just what attracts millions of visitors a year. But, standing beside the rail on
the American side of the Falls is a completely different experience and causes the most cynical of onlookers to stand back and take a breath. The sound of the roaring water as it approaches the 180-foot drop is enough to make many visitors step back and view the phenomenon from a distance, and watching the tons of water pour over the rim instills fear in the bravest of onlookers. It’s a natural wonder that never

gets old, and, for centuries, visitors have flocked to the area to view the Falls, feel the mist, and enjoy one of the most awesome views on earth. The most demanding skeptics exit the viewing area with a new sense of respect for the power of nature in its rawest form. It’s a place that deserves, or, should I say, demands respect from its visitors, thousands of tourists eager to stand on the edge and witness the
largest waterfall in North America. There’s also an aura of adventure that surrounds the Falls and its long history of daredevils who have attempted, and mostly failed, to conquer the plunge, a feat first attempted and successfully completed in 1901 by a lady called Annie Edison Taylor. She braved the falls in an oak barrel with a pillow at one end and an anvil at the other. As rescuers pulled see PLUNGE, pg. 8

Bill Todd’s July 10, 2019, letter to the editor was an interesting read. In his attempt at brevity, he makes the facts sound like the Republicans’ nominating process was no big deal. So much was left out. That’s just WRONG. I’m not going to play tit-for-tat for the events he mentioned. I will mention a few, however. What happened from the very beginning of the campaign captured my attention. Otherwise, I’d be just another citizen voter sitting on the sidelines. For Scott Wyatt to say that he couldn’t resign his position on the Republican Local Planning Committee (LDC) doesn’t make common sense. I’ve know for a long time that the best way to oust an incumbent is to use the convention process. Yes, Scott took advantage of the “new” law. To hear him tell it, he tried but was unable to formally resign his position on the LDC. Before he resigned, though, his proxy voted to have a convention. I’ve NEVER been a part of something from which I couldn’t resign. By all ethical -- if not party standards -- a person OR his proxy should never vote where he has a personal interest. At the vote, Scott Wyatt tells no one when his proxy votes on his behalf that he’s going to run for the 97th General Assembly delegate office held by the incumbent, Chris Peace. He knew it, though. This was planned MONTHS beforehand. What ethics will Scott Wyatt use once in office? How does that sound to you? From that point forward, it’s one comedy of ethical if not political wrongdoings after another. The one key and common element in what happened is that the majority of citizens’ voices were suppressed and their see LETTERS, pg. 8

her from the small backwaters around the Falls, she emerged with a message that no other person should try this. Taylor thought the feat would make her famous and
rich, but she died penniless living in the poor house near Niagara Falls. Niagara’s first lady and her feat prompted a number of efforts by famous and infamous daredevils who attempted to duplicate her feat, most of them ending up being identi-

fied by recovered body parts. The long history of challenging the Falls in all sorts of contraptions adds to the atmosphere surrounding the powerful attraction, and a cottage industry telling the illustrious past is sort of a must-see Niagara sideshow has emerged. I remember my trip to the Falls as a child for many reasons, but it’s the tall tales surrounding the efforts of those daredevils that left the most lasting impression. I recall one of them who walked across the expanse on a tight rope several times and then finally died when he slipped on a banana peel and succumbed to the ensuing
infection. The most famous incident involved two children and their uncle out on a boating trip far up the Niagara River in the 1960s when their outboard engine failed and they began drifting toward the rapids and the impending edge. A famous photo displayed in Niagara portrays a tourist at the rail of the Falls extending a hand and snatching the small girl just before she drops. The uncle drowned in the mishap, but the young boy went over the Falls with just a life preserver for protection and survived with minor injuries. Looking at the power of the water as it makes that drop
would lead anyone to believe that no human could survive such a jarring fall with a landing on huge rocks that dot the bottom of the Falls. The small boy did survive, and, shortly afterwards, officials made it a crime to test the mighty Falls. The later attempts at the Falls resulted in a media circus, and failed attempts placed an undue hazard on emergency workers tasked with rescue or recovery. The unique aura associated with those early daredevils remains, and the power of the Falls is constant. Unfortunately, about two dozen people lose their lives annually by committing suicide at the iconic site,
plunging themselves in the river and going over the Falls. A couple of weeks ago, a man took the plunge near the Canadian side of the Falls, the largest and highest of the series of formations. He quickly disappeared and officials assumed the worst and began a dismal recovery effort under the falls. To their surprise, the man was found sitting on a rock with only minor injuries. It seems high water levels on the river and in the basin below the Falls may have saved him from certain death. Or, perhaps he just got lucky on what seemed like the most unlucky day of his life. Who said there’s no such thing as a second chance?

Republican Party of Virginia Central Committee’s (RPVCC) Fifty-six ignoble members voted on behalf of the 97th District citizens to elect our nominee. They refused to accept the vote of the 2,400 of those in the 97th District who voted in an OPEN election. The RPVCC voted to accept the restricted convention’s results. You need to know that 100-plus citizens’ opportunity to vote at that convention was engineered to not allow them to vote, or you could say, stolen by the Wyatt Campaign. How does that sound to you? MOST of those 56 don’t even live in the 97th District. The convention was expressly cancelled by the Republican Party, i.e. by the LDC and the
state RVP chairman in writing via a letter and on the RPV website. We stayed home based upon that. So, of course, Scott got 400-plus votes at a cancelled convention at the time. Chris had over 550-plus votes locked in even if Wyatt didn’t allow the other 100-plus citizens to have a vote at the convention. Chris Peace would have easily won that convention vote if it had not been cancelled by the LDC and state RPV chair. How does that sound to you? When the nomination appeals finally made it to the RPVCC, we have learned from those who were there and walking into the meeting, certain party leaders were overheard commenting that
they knew how that vote was going to turn out. It didn’t matter what the facts were and it didn’t matter what was or was not presented. How does that sound to you? You must realize that this may have been planned since late 2018 by certain Senate Republican Party leaders who approached Scott Wyatt to run for the delegate seat in 2019. These politicians aren’t even in the House of Delegates. This wasn’t really about Chris Peace as a delegate. It’s about him being a statesman and making decisions for his constituents, not always following the party line as established by powers that are in control, and person-

Kaine said involving these students in STEM-related disciplines is an important step, and the program and the students involved represent an important avenue for immigrant communities to achieve and excel in an ever-emerging field. He also noted the unique advantage that a career in STEM could present for Latina students.

Staff Report news@mechlocal.com HENRICO – Boater Bryan Elrod of Mechanicsville recently won the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Piedmont Division tournament on the James River after catching five bass weighing 16 pounds, 10 ounces. Cold Harbor Commissioner Frederic McGhee noted Boyds’ efforts to meet the county’s desires by increasing the commercial element of the project and reducing the number of residential units. “It looks as if Boyd had done what the county has asked them to do with this property,” McGhee said. “I would like to see a way that this could happen.” He suggested some sort of guarantee be issued regarding the commercial element and suggested an adjustment to the phasing plan that staggers development. “I’d like to see more of it (commercial development) sooner rather than later,” he said.
There was no wolf. After several more cries of wolf when there was no wolf, this person’s friends stopped running to help. Then a real wolf showed up and the sheep herder yelled for help. Planning Director David Maloney suggested the commission could deny recommendation as presented with the caveat of approval with adjusted phasing. Maloney said Lake District will provide shovel-ready sites for potential commercial customers, and is contributing more than $6 million in infrastructure improvements. That includes $3 million for road improvements, $3.4 million in school funding, and more than $400,000 for a potential Fire/EMS facility in the area. He noted that the county’s Comprehensive Plan designates just such land use for the area. R-MC President Robert Lindgren joined Kaine in the welcome. “Thirty-four remarkable high school students, the young women here in this audience, will embark today on a week of learning that will set you on an exciting and lifedefining course impacting the rest of your lives — your STEM exploration and well beyond,” Lindgren said. wide, all traditional schools select Outstanding Teachers of the Year. Competition for the Mechanicsville Lodge award has expanded significantly since 1969, as 11 new county schools were built in Mechanicsville since then.
“I would submit this project, which is heavy on the residential side, actually is exactly what the Comprehensive Plan envisions,” Maloney said. He said denial of the project should prompt discussions with the Board [of Supervisors] regarding the Comp Plan and possible adjustments. “The consistency and predictability of that plan has been a hallmark for more than 30 years that the plan has been in place,” Maloney said. The panel denied recommendation by a 5-2 vote with McGhee and Mechanicsville representative Randy Whittaker providing the opposing votes. The project now moves on for Board of Supervisors consideration with the recommendation of denial from the Planning Commission.
A controversial group came into Hanover County. They asked for their right of assembly and their right of free speech. They received these rights. They exercised these rights without incident and they moved on. No problem. I do not believe anybody in Hanover County believed anything this group had to say. They have a right of free

Hollender completes GRAL record sweep By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – Mission accomplished. At midseason, Hanover Country Club Shark Attack head coach Leslie Nuckols stated that 8-year-old swimmer extraordinaire Gareth Hollender had already broken all 8-and-under boys Greater Richmond Aquatic League regular season records in metermeasured events in which he competed. Next, he had to finish the job in races measured in yards. Thanks to a personal best 18.31 in the 25-yard breaststroke in this past week’s season finale against Canterbury, Hollender could lay claim to record times in that event, the 50 freestyle, the 25 butterfly and the 100 individual medley in both measurements. In the 8-and-under age group, he also holds the 25 freestyle and 25 backstroke records, again in both measurements. Hollender set records, sometimes more than once, in 12 Joel Klein for the Local

categories. With all of these accomplishments, however, there is a final, major hurdle to clear, the 2019 GRAL Champs, the league’s postseason of record, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center in Chesterfield. The site, also known as SwimRVA, will host races for ages 12 and younger on Saturday, and for ages 13 to 18 on Sunday. Each day is broken into two sessions, with the first at 9 a.m. and the second at 1 p.m. on Saturday, and 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. Another swimmer to watch, this time on Sunday, is 13-yearold Christine Datovech of the Ashland Barracudas. Datovech, a fan of the technical side of swimming – always looking to find ways to improve technique and, therefore, improve time – enters as the top seed in the 13-14 girls 100 butterfly (1:01.09), the 50 butterfly (27.33), the 100 backstroke (1:01.21), the 50 backstroke (29.05), the 100 freestyle (54.67) and the 50 freestyle (24.97). Cere Duplissey of Ashcreek will provide Datovech with top competition in the 50 freestyle, qualifying second with a best time of 25.59. Look for Morgan Pittman of Burkwood to push Datovech for the top in the 50 butterfly, entering as the second

seed at 27.84. In the 9-10 girls age group, Karina Blanco of The Federal Club is the second seed in the 50 backstroke, trying to make up two seconds on top-seeded Gabriela Carvalho of Wyndham. In 11-12 girls, Blanco’s teammate Amanda Barnard, with a best time of 27.16, will enter as the second seed in the 50 freestyle Saturday, with Hanover Country Club’s Maddie Medei just behind in fourth (27.39). Barnard is also seeded second in the 100 freestyle, and Medei third, both just behind Kaylah Wagner of Tuckahoe Village West. On the boys side, keep an eye on Chandler Rose of Burkwood. The 10 year old was the only swimmer in the 9-10 50 freestyle to break the 30-second barrier this season, finishing in 29.21 against Church Run three weeks ago. Rose is also the top seed in the 100 freestyle (1:03.99), the 50 backstroke (34.09), and is the second seed in the 100 individual medley (1:15.68), just behind Lucas Salser of Goochland. Alex Gertner of The Federal Club looks to make noise in the 11-12 boys, sitting as second seed in the 100 freestyle, the 50 butterfly and the 50 backstroke and third seed in the 50 freestyle as well as the 50 breaststroke. At the 13-14 age level, the Ferocious Frogs of Battlefield Green are represented well by Ben Gordon, the top seed in the 50 freestyle (23.59) the 100 backstroke (57.47) and 50 backstroke (27.89), and second seed in the 100 freestyle (52.13) and both the 50 butterfly (26.07) and 100 butterfly (1:00.13). Gordon is the only swimmer in GRAL this season to break the minute mark in the 100 backstroke, enjoying a 5.5 second advantage over the next qualifier.

Watch for Brock Rempe in the 15-18 boys, the second-best qualifier in the 50 breaststroke (28.72). Every race matters at Champs, as swimmers not only look for individual glory, and new best times to help propel them into the offseason (or for many of them, the next swimming season on their calendar), but also for critical points for their teams, as four divisional champions will be crowned. Post 175 closes regular season with a 2-of-3 week By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor COLONIAL HEIGHTS – Stormy weather did its best to scramble Mechanicsville Post 175’s final week of the regular season, but it could not derail Post 175’s quest to claim the right to begin the American Legion District 11 tournament at home. While an intense storm rendered Post 175’s home field at Hanover High School unplayable –a rare event for that field – and forced the cancellation of its rematch with West End Post 361 Thursday night, Mechanicsville won two of three of its other games to close out the regular season 5-8. Post 175 began the week with a 3-2 win over Lakeside Post 125 Tuesday, then beat Powhatan Post 201 4-1 Wednesday. The team ended the regular season with a tough 8-7 loss to Colonial Heights Post 284 at Shepherd Stadium Sunday. But spirits were high and Post 175 manager Ken Schrad was feeling pretty good. “The kids have been great,” Schrad said. “We had a great … back half of the season. I always tell the guys it’s not how you start. It’s how you finish.” Schrad wasn’t concerned by the loss to Post 284. A couple of controversial calls at home plate early in the game gave Colonial Heights a two-run advantage. In the top of first inning, while Post 175’s Trey Karnes was caught in a rundown trying to steal second base, Post 175’s Connor Konecny tried to steal home. Colonial Height’s pitcher Hunter Vaugh responded by throwing home. While Konecny was under the tag, he called out. In the bottom of the second, a Post 284 player was caught in a rundown between third and

home. Post 175 catcher Joey Turner threw to third baseman Travis Shumate, but Shumate was called for obstruction while he was making the play and
the run awarded to Colonial Heights. “The beginning of the game was a little bit exciting,” Schrad said.
Post 284 had a 4-1 lead after two innings, but Mechanicsville wasn’t daunted. The team responded with four runs of their own in the third. Leadoff
batter – and starting center fielder – Noah Smith opened with a single to left field. Trey Grzelecki sacrificed him to second. Hunter Beck then
drove Smith in with a ground ball that was mishandled by Colonial Heights’ catcher Kyle Chenault. Smith scored and Beck advanced to third on the error. Trey Karnes walked and Blake Doggett was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Post 175’s Gabe Lassiter then hit a hard single to right field that scored Beck. After a Colonial Heights pitching change, Turner likewise singled to right field to score Karnes. An error by the Post 284 right fielder allowed Doggett to come in as well to give Mechanicsville a 5-4 advantage. After that, the game was a close-fought contest that was decided more by who batted last than by any other edge, and with Colonial Heights the home team, it had the last at-bat. Despite a dogged relief performance on the mound by Smith, Post 284 scored with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to end the game. The final run was the only one attributed to Smith, who threw 51 pitches – 65 percent of them strikes – with four hits, two strikeouts and no walks in 2-2/3 innings of work. “He did great, and that’s big for him,” Schrad said. “He’s told me all season, ‘Coach, I don’t need to warm up. Just pull me off center field and I’ll come in and pitch,’ and that’s what he’s been doing for us and that’s amazing. I think he’s getting more and more confidence as he goes along.” Smith was hot at the plate, too. He went 3-of-5 for two runs. “We moved him into the leadoff spot, and he’s been awesome, absolutely awesome in the leadoff spot,” Schrad said. “That’s another cool find. Every time you keep making adjustments, keep looking for things. You put him in that spot, and he’s been delivering.”

CAPRICORN • Dec 22/Jan 20 An interesting prospect comes your way, Capricorn. You aren’t quite sure what to make of it, so give it a few more days to work out the kinks before responding.
TAURUS • Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, many people are counting on you this week and you don’t want to let them down. Recognize that it takes time to see results. Be patient and stay the course.
