Mechanicsville supervisor Canova Peterson said he had received information that some interested parties were informed the case was deferred and he was concerned that could preclude some of those interested parties from attending the public hearing.
Maloney indicated the deferral was requested to allow the applicant adequate time to seek legal counsel regarding the case.He also noted the amended application contains more stringent restrictions than the original request.
“I am in receipt of an email that came from someone in planning that indicated that Mr. Stanley has indicated that he will be deferring the case,” Ashland supervisor Faye Prichard said. She said the communication was “misleading” to some who received it, and said she supported holding the public hearing and then considering the deferral request.
“It makes me uncomfortable deferring before we have all the information or before we can give direction. It doesn’t seem fair to anybody,” Prichard said.
Vice chair Sean Davis, Henry District, noted the applicant’s case could change once he is counseled, and also said confusion regarding the deferral could cause some to not show up for the public hearing. The chair noted that requests for deferrals by the applicant are not uncommon and said he’d never seen one denied. “I’ve never seen a deferral that was asked for by an applicant turned down,” Stanley said. “I indicated to the Planning Department that I planned to move for a deferral.” Chickahominy supervisor Angela Kelly-Wiecek said she could recall times when citizens were confused as to whether a case would be heard and suggested possibly deferring the case, but allowing the public hearing to proceed in order to gain more insight regarding the request. “We’ve had public hearings and then deferred,” she said. “We’ve even come back and held additional public hearings so we could do more, and, given the amount of attention that this particular case has received, I would offer to the chairman that might be a helpful solution.”
Stanley noted that all applicants deserve equal treatment and said his request to defer was based on his belief that a small business owner has the same rights as a large developer.
Dibble said there is a distinction in the two cases, and, while she feels comfortable with information regarding the Hickory Hill project and its status, she is less familiar with the Masons’ request.
The only information available for her consideration is “a big stack of papers from opponents.” “I don’t feel like I have enough information to make a decision on what to do with the case,” Dibble said.
Davis joined fellow board members Michael Herzberg, Cold Harbor; Peterson, KellyWiecek and Stanley in voting for a deferral prior to the public hearing, while Dibble and Prichard recorded no votes.
Stanley said he has not reached a conclusion on either of the cases but noted that “Hickory Hill is getting a lot more opposition that this one.”
Kelly-Wiecek said she also is seeking more information on the case and suggested allowing those who did show up for the evening’s public hearing be allowed to speak during Citizen’s Time.
Board rules provide that items contained on the agenda for a public hearing cannot be addressed during Citizen’s Time.

Randolph-Macon head women’s lacrosse coach M.K. Geratowski had been involved with a non-profit that helped kids like Allie before she arrived in Ashland.
“When I had been at some previous schools, we’d been involved with Friends of Jacklyn, which is an organization that helps kids, specifically kids with brain tumors,” Geratowski said. “My assistant [at Randolph-Macon] at the time had mentioned that there was another organization called Team Impact. That was more broad-based in the sense that it helped any kids that had sort of any life-threatening illnesses.
When Allie joined the team, they had a proper college signing ceremony. They even had folks interview Allie, and Allie gave gifts to her new team members. She’s been a key member of the squad since, with her own number, 32. When announcing the team lineup before a game, Allie’s name is the last one called.
Joining the Yellow Jackets’ women’s lacrosse team helps inspire her to work harder to meet and exceed her physicians’ expectations.
“For people who’ve been a part of a team, there’s that a different kind of family feel than having your mom tell you you can do it,” Amanda Jones said. “It is different having your teammates telling you you can do it – and they give her a drive that nobody else in this house could give her.
“I mean, she rolled up out of surgery from having a major bowel resection two years, three years ago, and she was wanting to sit up as soon as she came out of surgery just to call them to show her team that she was working to sit up. She was supposed to be in the hospital for three weeks. She was there for just under a week because she got up and she started walking. And she used to walk despite a terrible amount of pain. But her and her team, her team did it with her.”
The inspiration flows both ways.
“Every time we see her, like the excitement that we bring her and that she brings the team, is so important to me,” said team member Katie Sheehan. “It’s such a cool experience, because it’s not something that every team gets to do. The joy that it brings her is it really important. But also the team dynamic, it’s something that the whole team can get around, that we all love, and we all want to spend time with her.
Allie stays on the sidelines during games, dancing when the Yellow Jackets score a goal and joining in the handshakes afterward.
She hasn’t seen much of the team since the COVID-19 pandemic began, but the team stays in touch with her. They chat on the phone and do a Facetime call at least once a week. Allie loves to show them her room and any new dinosaurs she’s added to her collection, and they read her stories.
Probably her favorite thing to do with team members is play “Would you rather?”, a game where they ask each other questions like, “Would you rather read a book or go to school all day?”
Allie faces a tough future with her mitochondrial disease. She’s already had numerous surgeries and faces more, among them a complete digestive tract transplant when a suitable donor can be found.
But, no matter how hard it gets for her, she knows her team is behind her – all the way.
