Bass Pro Shops: ‘three really good years’ By Jim Fields jfields@mechlocal.com (Editor’s note: A three-part series on economic development concludes today, with the success of Bass Pro Shops.) Since Bass Pro Shops opened its doors in the Winding Brook development near Ashland, general manager Greg Bulkley said the store has enjoyed “three really good years.” “While a lot of people think of us as a store for hunters and fishermen, we look at ourselves as a family store. We have some-

thing for everyone, including children here.” When the store opened, it was supposed to be one of the anchors in the commercial development, which also was going to feature a 60-store BULKLEY outlet mall. It was scheduled to open in 2010, but, due to the economy, construction has yet to begin.

Representatives of Holladay Properties recently announced that they expect to break ground on the outlet mall sometime in 2012 and hope to have it open in 2013. “It’s a disappointment that more of Winding Brook hasn’t been finished,” Bulkley said. “When you are in a location with something like the proposed outlet mall across the street, you feed off one another. A small flock of vultures was spotted on Tuesday, Dec. 20, in Mechanicsville, and they might have left the area as fast as they arrived. Five were seen perched in two trees on Lee Avenue, while a solitary black figure was high atop the water tower near the intersection of Lee and Jackson. “We have them all over the county,” Sgt. Kevin Kilgore, chief of Hanover County Animal Control, said. “We have two species around here, the black buzzard and turkey buzzards.

What happened to respect for life? An admitted true crime reader and viewer (and there are so many newspaper, magazine and television accounts available), the conversation at home has been repeated often: Is there no longer any respect for life? Based on the ever-increasing number of crimes that take lives, the answer apparently is no. Without any intention of spotlighting any previous or recent incidents, we live in a society — and this is on a nationwide scale — where human life appears disposable in the eyes of some. Do we not have adequate deterrents in place so that the taking of a life isn’t a consideration? Do you ever wonder if some of the more severe punishments of the past merit a return? Let’s just call this a “thinking out loud” scenario. It is incredibly alarming that someone may die at the hands of another “for the thrill of it.” Not that there is any — and I can’t emphasize that enough — reason to kill another human being. It’s incomprehensible on so many levels. Who is to blame? What can we do to prevent the horrific acts we hear of on a near daily basis? Years ago, a friend who was in law enforcement traveled to an Asian country that doles out some serious punishment for crimes. Where is that line drawn between humane and barbaric? Most importantly, do we remember the victim(s)? Yes, this is a different direction as we get ready to welcome a new year. It’s obvious we need to return to civilized values. What do you think?

Occupy’s goal is to destroy country’s entrepreneurship “Do you hear me now?” So ends the letter submitted to this publication by Hubert Hawkins, supporting the Occupy movement that is trashing cities in this country, advocating the destruction of private business and costing taxpayers millions of dollars. A cursory examination of this brainless Occupy Wall Street menagerie of Marxist, Socialist and capitalism would reveal its main thrust; to destroy the entrepreneurship of this country, the American work ethic and our freedom, among many other worthy American traditions of this country. The main thrust of OWS is that these people believe that the working class, the middle class, owe them part of the money that by hard work, they have earned. The lamebrained college students, who have taken out loans, are

really surprised that the six-figure job they had envisioned hasn’t materialized immediately after they graduated. What they do is default on the loan and guess who ends up paying it back? Taxpayers. Millions, if not billions of dollars, see LETTERS, pg. 8

Some students sought the Republican or Democratic nomination while other students decided to form third parties such as the “Unity Party” and the “Nighthawk Party.” All tenth grade students who were registered to vote in the mock election voted on November 1 -18. ver a quarter of all tenth grade students voted. Afte f r counting the votes, Kensley Watkins, the Republican nominee was elected as Mock Governor. As a reward for her electoral victory, she will be receiving a pizza party for herself and ten supporters of her choice. From that site, students may look up books, check the due dates of books they have checked out, and access our growing list of e-books. (Students must use their student log-in to access these options). The library is holding a fundra d iser through the end of February involving the recycling of ink cartridges, toner, cell phones and batteries, and other “retired” hand-held devices. The funds raised will allow for further purchases to improve the library’s surroundings. And finally, the library will hold its second annual Scholastic Book Fair during the first week of February (after exams). This is an opportunity for you to learn more about the planning process, the rules and regulations governing zoning and subdivisions, the legal bases for planning, planning for capital improvements, and ethics in the planning process. including income taxes, payroll taxes and other taxes, according to the Tax Policy Center, a Washington think tank. Households making between $50,000 and $75,000 will pay an average of 15 percent of their income in federal taxes. Lower income households will pay less. For example, households making between $40,000 and $50,000 will pay an average of 12.5 percent of their income in federal taxes. Households making between $20,000 and $30,000 will pay 5.7 percent. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner was pressed at a White House briefing on the number of millionaires who pay taxes at a lower rate than middle income families. He demurred, saying that people who make most of their money in wages pay taxes at a higher rate, while those who get most of their income from investments pay at lower rates. “So it really depends on what is your profession, where’s the source of your income, what’s the specific circumstances you

face, the averages won’t really capture that,” Geithner said. And these are just federal taxes! Mr. Hawkins’ desire and the OWS crowd is to have those who have worked hard and succeeded to contribute to their OWS success and motivation to be successful. But, they don’t want to succeed. I would wager that if Mr. Hawkins and OWSers that think like him were in the category of rich, or one percent, they would be screaming to the highest ills against a higher tax on their incomes. Which is Obama’s primary goal. I also wonder if Mr. Hawkins is employed. If so, doesn’t he realize that he is accepting his salary from a business that he wishes to eradicate? After all, the owner is in the one percent bracket. This is one of the methods of Socialism; class envy, unions, strikes and warfare. These goals are straight from Marxism. One of its beliefs is that capitalism suppresses the working class and deprives them of wealth. They, therefore, want the destruction

of capitalism, a classless society and wealth distribution equally to all. However, this never happens. Hitler had this goal and you remember the outcome. Castro has spent 30 years promoting it. Who wants to live in Cuba? None of the OWS ilk want to go and I’m almost sure Mr. Hawkins wouldn’t want to live there. Bear in mind, folks, purveyors of Marxism and Socialism never give up their cause. They have America, its ideals, its history, its work ethic, its military, its greatness. They will seek any means to destroy our country. Obama is their leader. There are 48 million of them on welfare that buy into this belief without question. letter directed at me in the Dec. 7 edition: Your description of faith errs in a couple of ways. First, your definition of the word “faith” is incomplete – faith is not just believing in something, it is believing in something without having evidence to back up that belief. Then you lump together the concept of religious faith with many different things that have nothing to do with beliefwithout-evidence, and try to say they are the same. Christian apologists love this argument, but it is completely invalid, because invariably the examples they choose have nothing to do with faith. All of the non-religious examples you note do not come from faith, they come from prior experience – for example, “having faith” that a chair will hold you has nothing to do with faith, for it comes not from belief without evidence but from the evidence of having sat in them previously. Most animals (includResponding to Mr. Agostino’s ing humans) are born with an instinctive fear of falling; a baby will not use a bridge over an opening until he is shown that the bridge is safe or is induced to take the risk by other means, and only after having experienced that the bridge is safe will he then use that bridge without further inducement. We absorb these experiences and lessons as we grow at a level beyond reasoning, so we sometimes consider them “faith-based” because we long ago forgot the specific learning experience that taught them to us. But I bet you can still remember a time you sat on something you trusted to hold your weight and it collapsed beneath you/ Religious faith, on the other hand, is absolutely a belief without evidence. It starts because someone you trust – parent, friend, preacher, etc. – coerces you into believing in his or her fantasy, and once that belief takes root, everything becomes

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Lee Andrews Jr.; her youngest son, Roy Douglas; and her three brothers, Allie Guyer, Edward E. and James Milton Jefferson. She is survived by her sons, Ira L. III and Anne of Ashland, Va., Ronald N. and Blanche of Church Road, Va., and Michael J. and Vickie Andrews of Chester, Va.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was well known in church circles in the Petersburg area for her lively, improvisational style of piano accompaniment for hymn-singing, and she was an adept and sensitive accompanist for soloists. She played regularly for her fellow residents of the Petersburg Home for Ladies, where she lived and received loving care for 12 years. A memorial service will be held for her on Tuesday, December 27, at 10 a.m. at the Washington Street United Methodist Church in Petersburg, Va. Thelma Nuckolls Gordon , passed peacefully on Dec. 18, 2011 joining her husband, Raymond and finding eternal rest. Thelma was born on a farm

near Galax, Va. tracing her roots to the original pioneer settlers of Grayson County. She was one of 12 children and grew up enjoying the simple pleasures and struggles of country life during the depression and World War II. After graduating as Valedictorian from Galax High School, she moved to Richmond to pursue work. While there, she ran into another Galax High graduate, Raymond Lee Gordon Jr. who became her lifelong love. After marrying in 1951, Thelma and Ray raised two sons, Mark R. Gordon and Randolph L Gordon, both now living in Richmond. Thelma, known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;TDâ&#x20AC;? by her closest friends, became camp mother to hundreds of boys during the late 1950â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and early 60â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when Ray served as director of the Richmond YMCAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s summer camp known as Camp Richmond and then Camp Weyanoke. This property is now the VCU Rice Center for Environmental Studies in Charles City County; the location of fond memories for the Gordon family. Thelma was lovingly dedicated to her family and devoted her life to her husband and sons. She spent many years in Richmond, then Newport News, Virginia supporting Raymond as he directed the Peninsula YMCA there. Ray and Thelma moved to Covenant Woods Retirement Community in 2001. She was loved by other residents and staff for her warm spirit, quick wit, Christian encouragement and uplifting poetry. She was a deep thinker; she found beauty in all things and cherished each individual. The next day, he was welcomed by a filled auditorium of family, friends, classmates and community supporters at Atlee High School, where he is a student. On Aug 11, Cole’s life changed forever when he hit his head on a submerged rock

while diving into the James River, suffering a head gash and a fractured C5 vertebrae in his spine, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. He spent 11 days in ICU at VCU Health System before being moved to Atlanta to the Shepherd Center, a rehabilitation hospital for spinal cord and brain injuries. They oversaw renovations of our home and conducted fundraisers to help pay for Cole’s recovery.” Two of the first people to visit Cole upon his return were his paternal grandparents, Anne and Kim Sydnor. “It was good to see him and I know he’s happy to be home,” his grandfather said. “He has his good and bad days, but I believe that the day will come when Cole will be fully independent. I really believe he will.” One of the next stages of recovery for the 16-year-old will take place in July when he returns to the Shepherd Center for surgery that will allow him to use his triceps and grab

Circuit Court Judge J. Overton Harris presided and administered the oath of office to each elected official, including his brother, T. Scott Harris, as commissioner of the revenue. “He did a good job repeating the oath,” Judge Harris said of his brother, with a touch of humor in his voice. “He didn’t slip up and make any mistakes. It was a special moment for me to administer the oath of office to him.” The judge then said he and his family were very proud of his brother and that he does a good job as commissioner of the revenue. Agreeing with the brothers was William F. Harris, their 88year-old father. “We are serving Hanover County now, but dad has also served the county,” Scott said.

Wayne was sworn in for the Hanover Board of Supervisors Wednesday night, while Kevin was sworn in and Thursday afternoon as a member of the Goochland County School Board.

One person Kelly talked about with a lot of emotion and feeling was Jenny Foster, who was on hand for Cole’s welcome at the school. “She was Cole’s ICU nurse while he was at MCV,” Kelly said. “She cared for him every night in ICU.” Jenny is a nurse in the Neuroscience ICU Department, and she talked about caring for

the teen. “I was one of many, many nurses that took care of him at MCV,” she said. ”You care for him like you would any person, but you realize this is a life-changing event and try to make sure he has anything and everything he needs.” Kelly said Foster was responsible for Cole wanting to live. “I was more of a friend with him than an adult,” Foster, said. “I listened to him, let him talk, and was honest with him about everything.” Kelly said Jenny is now part

of their family. “I guess in many ways I am,” Jenny said. “Cole is part of my life now.” As family and friends began to make their way to the exits, it was apparent Cole was happy and pleased. He had told the crowd how much it meant to be home for Christmas. When asked how it felt to be home, he said, “It feels like a million dollars.” And to have all his friends around him? “Two million dollars.”

Ellington said he knew at the beginning of the season that his Confederates (4-4) would face a challenging season if they cannot cope with the pressure defense. The first quarter proved his point, with Lee-Davis coughing up 10 turnovers and falling behind 24-6. “We’ve got to learn how to handle pressure, especially in

the Capital District, which is a pressure district,” Ellington said. “That’s what’s making it tough on us.” Ellington had to call two early timeouts to prevent a rout. He called the first with 3:29 left in the first quarter and a 14-4 Titan lead. After that, the turnovers became more infrequent, but missed shots prevented Lee-Davis

from making up any ground. Ellington called the second timeout with 4:42 left in the second quarter and Trinity Episcopal ahead 30-9. The Confederates ran roughly even with the Titans (7-1) after that. But the fundamental problem still remains. “It’s decision-making, it’s seeing the floor better, and in general just making better decisions with the basketball,” Ellington said. “In the pregame talk, all we talk about is

handling the pressure – how to line up, where to be, and how to move it. But they’ve got to execute. lic schools we don’t see very often,” said Trinity Episcopal assistant coach Mitch Hauser, who helmed the team in head coach Rick Hamlin’s absence. “It really makes us feel good about where we’re at with our program, being able to come over here and win this.” Aside from confidencebuilding, the tournament had some concrete benefits for the Titans. “We’ll face some great teams that do all sorts of things defensively,” Hauser said. “This week, we were able to go against some man, some zone. We were able to se a little bit of everything to help prepare us for what we’ll see throughout the season.” Hauser agreed with Ellington that the Titans’ pressure defense was pivotal to their victories, which included a 79-50 victory over Colonial Heights on the tournament’s opening night Tuesday. “I think a big key was our

pressure defense in both games, forcing a lot of turnovers and getting us easy looks in transition,” Hauser said. Lee-Davis – led by Jalen Harvey with 8 points – had its share of easy looks, but all too often, instead of driving to the basket, an ill-advised pass resulted in either a turnover or a missed scoring opportunity. “When you get close to the basket, at that point, you’re supposed to shoot the ball, not pass, because everybody’s too packed in,” Ellington said. “Once you get close to the rim, take it up. You might get a foul – better than a turnover. We just keep stressing that over and over. Hopefully they’ll pick up on that.” At the beginning of the season Ellington said the Confederates need to learn how to win, but that did not play much of a role in their loss to the Titans. “It plays a role in tight games. It doesn’t play as much of a role in a game where it’s not close,” Ellington said. “We didn’t really compete very well today. You have to learn how to compete. … The

We went back and made a lot of mistakes down the stretch.” King William coach Joe Harper said he felt his Cavaliers (2-7) competed pretty well in their 42-30 loss to Lee-Davis on the opening night, but, because of their lack of depth, they did not have the energy to run with the Colonials (3-5) in the consolation game. “The competition was good, but I didn’t think they were above our level,” Harper said. “I just think our legs went out. Playing backto-back, we just don’t have the numbers that everybody has.” In the consolation game, Colonial Heights was led by Derrick Holmes with a game-high 24 points and T.J. Daniels with 23. Freeman McPhearson led King William with 16 points. Tuesday night, Lee-Davis was led by Josh Brown with 15 points and 7 assists. Thanks to some encouragement from his mom Debbie Lunsford, he took the leap into the world of music. And now the 16-year-old from Mechanicsville is preparing to move to Texas to pursue his dream. On Aug. 20, Abram and his mother will head to Dallas where he has been accepted to study — and hone his skills — with the Linda Septien Entertainment Group. School district again expects full accreditation

For the ninth consecutive year, Hanover County Public Schools will again receive 100 percent full accreditation. According to Dale S. Theakston, communications specialist, the accreditation is determined based on the 200910 Standards of Learning assessments. Preliminary information from the Virginia Department of Education indicates the accreditation status. Final accreditation reports are expected on Sept. 15.

Hanover County has been recognized by the Virginia Association of Counties as the recipient of the 2010 Achievement Award for the Dominion Resources Greentech Incubator. The county was honored for its model local government program in the category of Community/Economic
