Updating and rebuilding Hanover County’s official government website is a complicated and time-consuming process, but officials took the first step last week in beginning that effort. The Board of Supervisors also received an update of the county’s role in J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.

As for the web improvements, the board endorsed a project outline presented by Kirk Baumbach, the county’s IT coordinator, that will take the initial steps that begins a process that could take up to two years. Getting it right is more important than rushing through the process, he said, and the test and revise stage of the process is critical. The county’s current website homepage is too crowded,

according to Baumbach, and requires too many clicks. While the new system is updated manually, the new system would allow authorized administrators to add or delete information. assist with the rebuild and the site could be launched as early as February 2014. The plan will be reviewed and revised by board reviews, and a committee comprised of citizens, industry leaders and officials will be formed to oversee the process. “The result that we are looking for is that we want to have a dynamic website that can be easily updated, configured to provide information and services to our constituents, businesses and others that will interact with us on a regular basis,” Baumbach said. In other matters, supervisors responded to citizens’ complaints regarding overgrown and unkempt yards on lots where foreclosures have occurred. Some houses in the county have been vacant for years and the abandoned properties have become eyesores in many neighborhoods. The board approved advertising a measure that would increase the penalty when the county is forced to clean the lots and lower the height of grass that is unaccept-

able and actionable by county officials. The ordinance would raise the fine from $50 to $200 for repeat offenders and lower the required level of action for grass to 12 inches as opposed to 15 inches. The revised measure also eliminates the requirement that complaints be received in writing. Richard Bartel, the county’s chief building official, said the problem is finding a responsible party to charge, in many cases, as ownership is often difficult to establish. He said there were 15 cases involving repeat offenders last year, and the proposed change would make “life easier for the citizens and easier for us.” The grass restrictions are applicable only in the Suburban Service Area designations and not in agriculturally zoned districts. A public hearing on the changes is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Sept. 26. J. Sargeant Reynolds president Gary Rhodes presented an update on the school’s activities and thanked Hanover County for its continuing support of the local community college. Joined by JSRCC board members Anne Marie Lauranzon and Mark Creery, Rhodes said the college has become

an integral part of community education in the metro area, including Hanover. “We had 2,900 Hanover residents attending J. Sargeant Reynolds the past year,” Rhodes said. “Fourteen percent of all of our students are from Hanover County. We had 208 Hanover students graduate last May.” “We have about 90 different career programs, everything from nursing to dental assistance and automotive,” Rhodes said. “Our college clearly helps with the quality of life of families.” The board also received an update on the Capital Region Collaborative and its efforts to stir regional cooperation. After holding 85 public meetings and speaking to more than 8,000 residents, the group comprised a list of priorities regarding education, job creation, education, transportation and other areas. Steve Herzog, director of Public Utilities, said a major drought affecting many areas in Central Virginia has spared most of Hanover County, so far. Herzog said there is no need for voluntary of mandatory water restrictions in Hanover, but the drought is affecting certain areas in the county.

How well do we use the time we have?

Last week, a cousin lost her battle with cancer. The dreaded disease became a part of her life a little more than two years. She had undergone surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation — as recent as earlier this year. When, less than two months ago, she received the news that she had three to six months to live, she opted not to pursue any of the treatments she previously underwent. She was secure in her decision and told me she had decided on quality rather than quantity for her remaining time. I respected that, because I knew she would take full advantage of the opportunity afforded her. And that’s just what she did. About a week after that fateful diagnosis, she came here for the 2012 Hanover Tomato Festival and, I’m happy to say, enjoyed the experience. The next day, she returned to our native West Virginia to spend time with family and friends. Most of those friendships spanned decades. Sadly, during that visit, the cancer started taking its horrific toll. She did not inform any of us as she declined while in Huntington and Charleston. After retiring in 2011, she had relocated to Raleigh, N.C., to be near her brother and his family. She was too ill to drive back to Raleigh. She did not inform the family that friends were bringing her home. Throughout the ordeal, she never complained. She welcomed visits from family and friends. And those of us whose lives she touched, knowing what was inevitable, were given the opportunity to tell her she was loved. From the time she received the last diagnosis, I’ve thought about her decision and “What would I do?” if placed in a similar situation. She was a woman of faith, and, as those with religious beliefs would say, “was ready to go.” That’s a comfort to those who loved her. Her memorial service was Saturday in Charleston. She was remembered as a loving, compassionate and giving woman. She left this earth having made the most of the time she had. Her quality over quantity decision has inspired me to make the most of every day. We shouldn’t take anything for granted, especially time. Melody Kinser

Thanks for festival success and suggestions for 2013

undertaking and they have been honored for their work. But what stood out is that what the Dowdas are doing is the basis of the Christian life.

I have not yet written to thank every one of the folks at Hanover Parks and Recreation and all the volunteers for helping make the 2012 Hanover Tomato Festival a great enjoyable success for all concerned — so here I am. Thank you all soooo much for everything. Thanks for the professionalism, the courteous help and everything else you did to make things go as best as possible. Now for making things better for 2013. 1. Pole Green Road should be one-way in the direction of the event during the day of the festival. This should be very easy to accomplish. 2. The event could last until 6 p.m. and everyone would still get out by dark. This would allow for the patrons to get a chance to enjoy things longer after grinding strife on Pole Green Road. 3. Maybe the event could be slated for two days! 4. But this is not the main reason why I am writing — I have ulterior motives. Anyone in their right mind that rides a bicycle should avoid Pole Green Road at all costs. I have been in several “parades” over the years just to end up waiting for cars to maneuver around the bicyclist to continue on their way in the “45-mph posted speed zone.” That’s right, 45-mph — winding at various times and with no shoulder. Yet these self-centered idiots risk life and limb to prove that they have a rite of passage just as anyone in a vehicle. Please, go riding in the park or a neighborhood or the James River. Just stay off of Pole Green before someone gets killed and someone has the rest of their life ruined. I have had very close encounters with bicyclists that have become more defiant recently and appear to simply just want a point made. Christ is described as the Son of God, who went about doing good. As Christians, we are called to do the same and to put the well-being and interest of others before our own. We feed the homeless, organize fundraisers, travel to far regions of the world to help feed the starving, to build a school or church, to establish free dental and medical clinics and rebuild homes in America as well as feed America’s hungry. We help our neighbor and pray for the good of all. Yet we are maligned by the media. Speaking as a Christian, we are not perfect; we sometimes say things we shouldn’t and do things we shouldn’t, but the goal is to be more Christ-like. In this topsy-turvy world, evil is called good and good is called evil. For those who dislike us and our beliefs, please be warned that should your car break down, we will help you fix it. If you run out of groceries, we will show up with a bag of food. If your child is ill, we will pray for your child. Responding to welfare column In response to Melody Kinser’s editorial, “How far should we go with ‘assistance’?”, as a retired “welfare” worker of 30 years, I would like to suggest that prior to writing about the welfare system that you interview a local department

Your writings are antiquated, erroneous and lead to continued prejudice and resentment for those receiving “welfare.” I am hopeful that you never find yourself in need, because you most likely will be “over income” to receive any of the “handouts” that you refer to. More than 100 scouts, former scouts, leaders, families and friends took part in the special event. The troop has had many scouts as members throughout the years. About 20 of the 51 Eagles were present and four of the

seven scoutmasters, as well as assistant scoutmasters and committee members, were in attendance. Troop 535 was founded in 1972 at the Church of the Creator by the late Paul Waitman and his wife Jean. The Waitmans had been involved in scouting for many years. This first troop had a roster of 23 boys. Kevin Waitman, the troop’s first Eagle Scout, was awarded his badge in 1973, followed by his brother Lin in 1974. Paul and Jean Waitman continued to be active in the troop in various roles for more than 30 years, and watched their grandsons become members. Kevin and his sons attended the reunion in July, as well as the troop’s most recent Eagle Scout, Bobby Garner. Bobby received his badge in 2012 after completing a landscaping project at Battlefield

In between Kevin and Bobby were 49 other young men who achieved scouting’s highest goal, and about 400 other boys who were described as “excellent scouts.” After Paul Waitman, there were several other scoutmasters who spent a lot of their time and energy molding young boys into men. The latest to accept this challenge is David Norman, who has watched four

sons pass through the troop. Norman’s youngest son Sam is working on his Eagle Badge, and, after completion, there will be four Norman brothers with the title of Eagle Scout. There have been many other brothers, cousins and sons to pass through the troop. Troop 535 has accomplished many things in its 40 years. Members lack about 50 miles to complete hiking the entire Appalachian Trail, from Maine

to Georgia. They have canoed in New York and hiked in Tennessee, visited Niagara Falls, participated in many National Jamborees, and camped in too many places to count in all kinds of weather. They have kayaked in the Florida Keys, camped on the top of a mountain, hiked out west at Philmont, and performed service projects to benefit just about every organization that can be imagined. They have improved parks,

churches and schools, fed the homeless, marched in parades, parked cars, picked up trash, and washed ambulances, just to name a few. They have learned first aid and survival, to save lives, to build a fire with just a flint, and to tie a wide assortment of knots on command. They have learned manners and how to follow the 10 points of the scout law. They have helped save lives and discovered careers with their training.

Lindgren received an Honorary Doctor of Education degree on Aug 10 during the University of Florida (UF) doctoral degree commencement ceremony. He also delivered the commencement address to 424 doctoral degree graduates. Lindgren earned both a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a law degree from UF, as well as a master’s degree from the University of Oxford. He then worked at UF from 1979 to 1994. His last six years there were spent as the vice president for development and alumni affairs, where he organized and directed the second-largest campaign for a public university in America at

Byers IV, the son of Karen and John Byers of Montpelier, earned the title of United States Marine after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, S.C. For 13 weeks, Byers stayed committed during some of the world’s most demanding entry-level military training in order to be transformed from civilian to Marine instilled with pride, discipline and the core

values of honor, courage and commitment. Training subjects included close-order drill, marksmanship with an M-16A4 rifle, physical fitness, martial arts, swimming, military history, customs and courtesies. One week prior to graduation, Byers endured The Crucible, a 54-hour final test of recruits’ minds and bodies. Upon completion, recruits are presented the Marine Corps emblem and called Marines for the first time. Byers is a 2010 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

in their children’s lives. She said she has big aspirations for this year as the school’s new principal. “The biggest vision for my school is to continue to involve the community to a great extent. There is such a wonderful tradition here,” Bibb said. “I’ve talked to so many teachers who have said I graduated from here and my parents graduated from here and my children go here.”

Do It Again I am familiar with the Great Awakening in the 1720s and 1730s in New England under Jonathan Edwards. I knew the Wesleys came to America to preach (before they were born again!), and I knew about George Whitefield. What I didn’t know was that Whitefield held a revival in Williamsburg, Va. that was attended by Samuel Morris, a bricklayer from Hanover County. Morris formed a Bible study group which prayed and read Whitefield’s sermons. An evangelical church formed from this revival. Sometime around 1747 or 1748, an evangelical Presbyterian minister named Samuel Davies came from Pennsylvania to Hanover County to pastor. Young Patrick Henry was an attendee. Henry became a champion of religious liberty, which eventually led to the First Amendment to the Constitution. A Great Awakening happened in Hanover County, Va. about 265 years ago. Why can’t it happen again? Why can’t God do it again here? We are losing our religious liberties. Our country desperately needs a revival. We need to turn back to God. Why not here? Why not us? Why not now?

Silvestri said the magnate’s interest in journalism might have been the driving force behind the purchase. “He’s the ultimate money manager, although he’s on the record saying if he wasn’t a money manger, he’d be a journalist,” Silvestri said. “He made his first $1,000 as a paperboy for the The Washington Post.” In a time when investment in the newspaper industry seems a risky venture to most, Buffett maintains a commitment to the printed delivery of news. “He believes in newspapers at a time in which people don’t,” Silvestri said. “I think, quite frankly, that

Even with the new ownership and renewed optimism, Silvestri said the challenges remain. “What doesn’t go away is the challenge facing newspapers, but what returns is the fact that we’re asking ‘what if ’ again. We’re going back to possibilities.” “We’re operating under the premise that newspapers will be around a long time, but we’re building out on the digital side as well,” Silvestri said. The company also has established an entrepreneurial zone in the Hanover facility in an effort to attract local entrepreneurs whose skills correlate well with the newspaper. Silvestri spoke with pride when describing the integral role of that Hanover facility. Originally designed with three presses in place, the facility has operated with only two since a major fire in 2007. The Hanover production plant not only prints the Times-Dispatch and family of area weeklies, it also produces The Daily Press, a daily located in Newport News. “Hanover has been a success story. Yellow Jackets back on target By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com Last season, with plenty of youth and holes to fill, the Randolph-Macon football team may have fell from the sights of some opponents. One year older and wiser there is no doubt the target is back on the Yellow Jackets after nearly winning the Old

Dominion Athletic Conference title and narrowly missing out on a post season bid in 2011. In his ninth season at the helm, R-MC head coach Pedro Arruza has produced a system of player recruitment that maintains a steady level of play on the field. This year should prove to be just another example of that ability. “I look at recruiting maybe a little differently than other people do,” Arruza said. “Yes, you have

to recruit good football players. You have to recruit guys that can run, catch. You have to recruit those things, but what I’m most interested in is having guys that are committed to playing football- are committed to doing things the right way off the field.” Over the past few years, R-MC has a proven record of doing just that. Though the Yellow Jackets return eight starters on both offense and defense the vacated slots are big voids to fill on both sides of the ball, but Arruza takes it in stride. “ Yo u hope that every year

you’re losing good players because if you’re not losing good players, that probably means your senior class wasn’t very strong,” Arruza said. “You like to think every year you have a strong senior class.” OFFENSE The biggest question mark for the offense

comes up front. The Yellow Jackets will need to find players to step into the slots vacated by a trio of standout linemen, Colin Moe, Rich Fluharty and center Andrew Sloan. “It’s hard to replace those guys,” Arruza said. One solidifying factor comes in the form of four-year starter, Byron Overstreet (Patrick Henry).

Overstreet’s 24 starts on the line are the second highest on the team. Meanwhile, every other offensive line position is up for grabs. “He’s the only guy that’s got a lot of experience coming back,” Arruza said. “We could have four brand new starters on the offensive line.” Currently holding an upper hand is senior Jordan Zentz, see JACKETS, pg. 27 `

who comes into the season with 10 starts on the line. Arruza expects 6’ 3”, 315, Josh Pittman (Hanover) to eventually develop into a good player on the line but he is currently injured and may see only limited play this season. While the line may be new, the Yellow Jackets can offset questions up front and ease the transition period with a talented and elusive group of skill players. R-MC returns five of their top six, and eight of their top 11 players in all-purpose yardage from last season. Sophomore quarterback Zac Naccarato displayed poise, escapability, talent and strength during a freshman season that netted both ODAC and Va SID Rookie of the Year Awards. Naccarato completed 66.7 percent of his passes and had a 159.73 efficiency rating, throwing for 210.5 yards per game in 2011. He should continue to improve this season. Junior Greg Petrohovich (Benedictine) returns as the top backup at quarterback while talented freshman Bubby Morgan adds even further depth. “I like our three quarterbacks,” Arruza said. “These are the best three quarterbacks we’ve had since I’ve been here.” The Yellow Jackets lost running back Thaddeus Scruggs to graduation but his ball-carrying partner Drake Sanders returns after netting 711 rushing yards last season, averaging four yards per carry. R-MC will continue the two-headed ground attack this season bringing junior Will McGhee from defensive back to running back. Junior running back Tucker Walton (Lee-Davis) has been battling injuries but came into camp in the best shape of his career. R-MC can also boast two of the best tight ends in the ODAC in seniors Zach Midulla and Dan Crouch. Midulla will start

for the third straight year after averaging 14.8 yards per reception last season. Crouch returns after missing last season due to injury. In 2010, Crouch notched four touchdowns averaging 13.6 yards per catch. Senior Ian Overstreet (Patrick Henry) also had a good camp and could add further depth at the position. “I think if we can keep everybody healthy, tight end of going to be one of our deeper positions,” Arruza said. “I feel really good about that.” Senior halfback Vance Hendren (Powhatan) returns as one of the most explosive players in the Yellow Jackets’ offense. Last season Hendren averaged five yards per carry and 16.2 yards per reception while scoring seven touchdowns. “He’s really good,” Arruza said. “He’s fast and I think he’s physical. He might be the fastest kid that we have on the team.” R-MC also boasts a duel threat at receiver with senior Luke Sellars and junior Christian Cook. Sellars has been solid throughout his career in Ashland and averaged 20.3 yards per reception last season. Cook had a breakout season last year and returns as the team’s top receiver who averaged 65.8 yards

per game with four touchdowns in 2011. “Really the biggest concern on the offensive side of the ball is the offensive line,” Arruza said. “I think if we can somehow put that together and get better there we’re going to be good.” DEFENSE Despite the fact that the Yellow Jackets gave up an average of 21.9 points per game in 2011, Arruza feels R-MC’s ability to stop opponents was underrated. “We were 16th in the country last year against the run,” he said. “We played pretty consistently on defense.” The Yellow Jackets held teams to 91.3 yards per game on the ground and 3.2 yards per carry. However, ends Joe Pricone and Patrick Moses teamed up with linebacker Jeremy Bowry to create those numbers but all three are gone in 2012. This year seniors Ian Candelaria and Cross Trued will occupy the tackles positions. Candelaria has 18 career starts on the line recording 28 takedowns and four tackles for a loss in 2011. “He’s as good as anybody in the league, I guarantee it,” Arruza said. Trued, who recorded 34 tackles and 5.5 tackles for a loss last

season, will make the shift from end to tackle after notching nine career starts. “He’s a monster,” Arruza said. “He’s strong. He’s physical. He’s the real deal.” One player who will see time at the end this season will be sophomore Calvin Davis (LeeDavis). “Calvin’s going to be a really good player for us,” Arruza said. “He’s going to play a lot on the defensive line.” Youth will dominate the linebacker position this season for the Yellow Jackets. “We will not have anybody starting at linebacker who’s older than a sophomore,” Arruza said. However, age does not designate the level of talent and there are several players that could come up big this season, most notably sophomore Tom Solak, who got three starts last season. Junior Abel Simpson and senior Akeem Hardy return at joker. Simpson was the team’s second leader tackler in 2011 with 31 solos and 50 total takedowns. Hardy recorded 17 tack-

les and 1.5 tfl last season. Last year, the one weak point of the R-MC defense was in the secondary where the Yellow Jacket’s proved vulnerable to the deep attack. That should not be the case in 2012. “We’ll have hopefully, three seniors back there,” Arruza said. “That will be huge.” Leading the way will be junior safety Andrew Leonard and senior corner Brandon Harrison. The pair were the third and fourth leading tacklers on the team in 2011, each recording 49 tackles. Harrison has seen ups and downs throughout his career and is set to finish on a high. “He’s strong. He’s dynamic. He’s physical,” Arruza said. “He’s got a lot of different tools. I’m expecting a lot out of Brandon this year.” Likewise for Leonard; “The thing about Andrew is he’s a gamer,” Aruzza said. “He finds a way to get around the football… He’s one of the more physical

players that we have on that side of the ball.” Two other dynamic secondary players are senior safeties David Fetter (Lee-Davis) and Billy Knarr. Fetter, one of the grittiest players on the field and currently struggling with injuries, was the team’s sixth leading tackler last season with 40 and two tackles for loss. Knarr sat out last season with a neck injury but was the team’s seventh leading tackler as a sophomore. “Having him back is a huge positive,” Arruza said. SPECIAL TEAMS While the Yellow Jackets boast loads of talent on both sides of the ball, the one true game-changer will be kicker/ punter Josh Storm. “We’re going to try to get as much out of this season as we can because we’re going to miss him next year,” Arruza said. The Fred Mitchell Award nominee averaged 36 yards on 33 punts last season with a long of 52 yards. He has the ability to flip the field from any place on the turf. On offense, Storm was 12of-16 on field goals last season between 20 and 49 yards and 10-of-12 between the 20- and 39-yard lines. “Having a kicker like that, having a punter like that, it’s a huge weapon,” Arruza said. “Just in terms of field position. Field position for your defense turns into field position for your offense. A guy like that can be a game changer and he is a game changer.” Senior Chase Phillips will once again return punts and has likewise proven invaluable at his job. “He’s dependable,” Arruza said. “He does a great job back there, doesn’t turn the ball over, got the ability to make things happen.” Randolph-Macon will open their 2012 campaign with a noon kickoff this Saturday at Johns Hopkins. The jerseys and shoulder pads gave way to black muscle shirts with the words “UNFINISHED BUSINESS” emblazoned in gold letters on the backs. The Cavaliers have two years of pent-up postseason frustrations, falling in the state semifinals in 2010 and coming within inches of a return trip to the semifinals last year. They don’t want another year of finishing among the best teams in the state this year – they want to finish as the best. “That’s what we talked about this off-season, getting over that hump,” said King William coach Jim Henderson. “We had a great regular season last year. We’ve

I’m sure the kids took it just as hard as we did as coaches. It shows with the hard work they’ve put in this off-season.” Henderson, who was an assistant at Dinwiddie before taking over at King William last year, said team members are driven to earn the ultimate payoff – a state title. “They had a great off-season, they worked their butts off,” Henderson said. “I told them, ‘It’s time to go collect that check. You’ve done all that work. It’s like payday. We want to get out there for the games and we want to make sure we collect the check. Ailing Newman taken for a ride at Busch Gardens By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com Williamsburg — To help support their sport, NASCAR drivers such as Ryan Newman make numerous public appearances throughout the course of the season. Like the proverbial postman, nothing keeps them from their duty. But perhaps Newman should be recognized for above and beyond dedication last week when he made a publicity visit to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. The plan was for the driver of the #39 Army Chevrolet to go for a spin on the amusement park’s new Verbolten’s roller

coaster. What was not in the plans was for Newman to be under the weather. “We’re having some fun thanks to Coca-Cola and a lot of folks that are NASCAR fans are here today and just enjoying some time,” Newman said. “I’m just a little under the weather so I feel a little rough.” Still, Newman, who has been battling illness for the past two weeks, put on a smile, interacted with fans and rode the ride along side Richmond International Raceway President Dennis Bickmeier. just doing what you got to do,” Newman said. Even ill, Newman enjoyed the ride. “The ride was really cool,” he said. “It was a lot of fun. It was totally unique. I really can’t give it away but it’s really unique.” Newman’s day didn’t end with the ride. The then sat in the heat signing autographs and interacting with over 200 fans that had waited in line for over an hour. It helped brighten his day. “It’s nice,” he said. “They may not be fans of mine but they’re fans of NASCAR and they enjoy it. You get the interaction, that’s part of it.”

Perhaps more appropriate to his choice of careers, Newman also took a spin at bumper cars. At one point, the NASCAR driver looked like a magnet as every other car in the rink came at him at once. Which track did the bumper cars compare closest to, Talladega or Watkins Glen? “Not even close to any of it,” Newman said displaying his biggest smile of the day. The trip to Busch Gardens turned out to be Newman’s highlight of the weekend. NBA’s Orlando Magic, he has been responsible for drafting such popular athletes as Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Maurice Cheeks, Andrew Toney and Darryl Dawkins. Prior to joining the Orlando Magic, Williams spent 12 seasons as general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers. During that time, he took a Sixers team that posted a 34-48 record in 197475 to a World Championship in 1983. Through several personnel moves during that time, Williams played a major factor in bringing the NBA title to Philadelphia. Before the Sixers, he served as general manager of the Chicago Bulls and then the Atlanta Hawks. For the Bulls, he raised average game attendance figures at Chicago Stadium from

3,700 to more than 10,000 per game. Although Williams has spent well over four decades in the NBA, his first love is baseball, the sport that earned him a scholarship to Wake Forest University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He was a three-year letterman as a catcher on the Demon Deacons baseball team and is a member of the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame. He later went on to earn a M.S. in physical education from Indiana University in 1964. Williams’ baseball career began when he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1962 and spent two seasons catching for the Miami Marlins, a Class A club in the Florida State League. He quickly moved from the play-

ing field to the front office, when he was appointed business manager of Miami in 1964. He took the general-manager job with the Spartanburg (S.C.) Phillies in 1965 and was later elevated to the position of president of the organization in 1967. In 1967, he was chosen the Minor League Executive of the Year by The Sporting News.

Williams remains active in baseball as a catcher in Dream Week games in Florida during the winter. He was also the president of Orlando’s Double-A Southern League team from 1990-1993. Williams’ son Bobby is the Washington Nationals’ Farm Director and his son Thomas is the senior accountant for the Boston Red Sox.

NASCAR’s Sadler takes ﬂight at Oceana Nationwide leader visits Virginia Beach Naval Air Station By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com Virginia Beach — Even though NASCAR Nationwide driver Elliott Sadler likes to fly around the race track, he has never been enthusiastic about taking to the skies. But last week the Emporia native coped with those aviation trepidations to pay a visit to Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach. Salder toured the base, hanger and control tower’s observation deck while spending time with sailors from Strike Fighter Squadron 81 the Sunliners, who are assigned to the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson. “Having Elliott Sadler here today is a chance for us to showcase the good that we do on a daily basis here at our squadron,” said Commander Richard Rivera. For Sadler it was a small way

of giving back. “My dad was in the National Guard,” he told the sailors. “I have four cousins that right now are in the Army. So we grew up knowing how important the military is to our country and the protection of our freedoms.” Furthermore, Sadler voiced his pride in being part of a sport that continually pays tribute to service men and women across the country. “We recognize what this is all about and you guys know if it was not for our men and women and having them protect our country, not only abroad but also here at home, we wouldn’t be able to do racing at all. “We understand the cost of freedom and why we’re getting to do races week-in and weekout,” Sadler said. “NASCAR does a great job. I’m very proud of that. They seem very patriotic,” Rivera said. “Having him here today kind of proves that point.” At Oceana, Sadler sat through a briefing on the F/A 18E Hornet then traded his NASCAR fire suit for a pilot’s flight suit and accompanying equipment. He quickly noted that his fire suit was much lighter and easier to put on. He was also shown the $250,000 head’s up display pilot’s helmet. All jet and tactical information is displayed on the custom molded visor. Asked if NASCAR should implement such devices, Sadler said, “There’d be wrecks everywhere.” A visit with the hanger crew, photo op with sailors on the runway then it was off to the observation deck below the control tower as Sadler and Navy Commanders traded stories about keeping deer off the runway at Oceana and the Emporia airport. speed. “Obviously you can see a bit of conditioning right here,” Henderson said as he pointed out team members running suicide sprints. “Our weight room numbers were through the roof this summer. We got a lot of guys faster, we got a lot of guys stronger. I’m very pleased. We had, I think it was, seven guys squatting 400 pounds or more. When I got here, we didn’t have any, or maybe we had one. … Our power cleans, we had over 10 guys power-cleaning over 200 pounds, which was a lot more than we had when I got here.” Henderson said their speed has also dramatically improved. “We got a lot faster. Our 40

However, as a follow up the sailors suggested a night landing, which was similar to finding a firefly in a cave. Sadler understandably did not do so well. Yet, overall it was a day to remember. “It’s not every day you get to come here and see what they do behind the scenes,” Sadler said. “We sometimes as Americans take things for granted and I think we take freedom for granted sometimes. I don’t think we tell these men and women enough, ‘Thank you’ for what they’re doing, putting their lives on the line.” Sadler’s visit also places further emphasis on the recent Congressional push to halt military sponsorship of NASCAR. In July, a House vote narrowly defeated a measure to stop such spending, 216-202. Sadler was emotional about the topic. “I think that’s- I don’t even know the right word right now,” he said. The estimated annual mili-

tary budget of $80 million dollars spent on NASCAR sponsorship provides a recruiting tool for the armed forces, but Sadler says the impact goes far beyond recruiting. “To me there are a lot of men and women that have served in the military that might be retired from active duty that that’s their race car,” Sadler said. “That Army car is their car and that’s something that they can hang on to. They have fought the battle for freedom. They have been there and put their life on the line. They have that car that they can root for…I think taking that away is not good for morale for these people that put their life on the line to support our country. “Maybe I’m bias because I’m part of NASCAR but I feel like we do a better job than any other sport of recognizing the military and men and women that support out country,” Sadler said. Furthermore, the idea of halting only the NASCAR portion of the recruiting budget is troublesome. “In the military, all branches advertise one way or the other,” Sadler said. “They have a huge budget and this is just a small portion of their budget for advertising.”

He threw for 1,800 yards and ran for 900 yards – and came out at halftime in three or four games.” While McPhearson is arguably the top gun, Jones brings

some strengths to the backfield, too. “Our offense will stay the same,” Henderson said. “Freeman gives us more than a run threat at quarterback than Jacob does, but Jacob’s got such a quick release and makes such great decisions with the football that he gives us a different look back there at quarterback.” Filling out the backfield will be Shaun Chandler and Camajae Peatross, both of whom are capable of rushing more than 1,000 yards, Henderson said. “The only thing that’s going to stop them is each other, because we don’t have enough balls to go around for everybody. We’re going to do the best we can,” Henderson said. “Last year I don’t think we had a thousandyard rusher, and we ran the ball

It’s not about the individual statistics, it’s about the team and about the wins.” Henderson expects big contributions from Jayvon Temple, who earned all-state honors last year, and all-district lineman Brandon Jackson. Temple, who played defensive end last year, will spend some time as linebacker. Jackson played on both sides of the line as a guard. Henderson is looking forward to the return of linebacker and receiver Jason Gresham. “He was injured all last year, so he kind of came in as a question mark,” Henderson said. “He’s pretty fast, good hands. As far as linebacker goes, he’s tall and lean and has got some range. He’ll bring some guys down.”
