By Melody Kinser mkinser@mechlocal.com Hanover County was rocked this year with tragedy as several members of our community, mostly young, lost their lives at the hands of others. These deaths lead our list of the Top 10 stories of 2012. A series of homicide-related deaths kicked off on Dec. 17, 2012, with the shooting of Jyreffe P. Clark, 17. The new year started with Brett A. Wells,

Hakopian, 44, was killed on Jan. 30, and Sabrina Maters Markham, 30, fell victim to her estranged husband, Ryan Markham, 33, on June 2. Other than Hakopian, all the victims lived in the Mechanicsville area. ‘Two by Two’ art project spotlights Noah’s Ark theme Ten Hanover County schools recently participated in the 2012 Noah’s Children Art Project. The theme of the project was “Two by Two.” As children’s art has always been at the core of Noah’s Children’s fundraising, the schools were commissioned to create art that would reflect hope, renewal, journey or any representation of the Noah’s Ark story. Elementary schools (Pole Green, Cool Spring, South Anna, Mechanicsville and Henry Clay) made arks that included three pairs of animals that served as the centerpieces for the culminating

Their creations also were showcased on the scoreboard. Noah’s Children, Central Virginia’s only pediatric palliative care and hospice program, was established by Richmond pediatrician Bob Archuleta in

Think about those serving this season It was a simple gesture that carried so much weight. When members of the Pamunkey Wo¬man’s Club gathered on Tuesday, Dec. 11, for their Christmas dinner meeting at the Hanover Tavern, cards were distributed at each table with a request: Write a note to our troops serving our country overseas. “Wow!” was my first impression — what a great idea. Then, the guilt sets in, because I will be the first to admit I often become too wrapped up in the day-to-day goings-on of life. So, I was very pleased to be able to be a part of this holiday moment of sharing. The note was straightforward and sincere: Thank you for your service to our country. I signed my name and included my e-mail address, just in case whoever the recipient will be wants a pen pal. Several family members have served in various branches of the U.S. military through the years, but this writer can’t fully comprehend the gulf of separation these dedicated men and women experience, especially during the Christmas season. A wave of emotion came over me as I placed the card on the table awaiting its retrieval. Thoughts turned to those so many miles from home and their loved ones. Their bravery, courage and, most of all, love of these United States touched me deeply. While we enjoy a fine dinner, gift-giving and the love and fellowship of family and friends, there are those giving of themselves for our protection and future away from those who matter most to them. A simple gesture can mean so much and here is a wish that those who receive the cards from a group of caring women in Hanover County, Va., will know they are appreciated and being remembered for their service. Miles may separate them from the security we enjoy, but, thanks to them, we have that comfort. If you have a loved one serving our nation, thank them and thank you. We are a better community because of what others give and do on our behalf. Melody Kinser

Plea to supervisors to support schools What is the best thing about Hanover County? Kings Dominion? Civil War parks? Tomatoes? The Center of the Universe? I believe the best of Hanover and the center of our community is our school district, which has the second lowest cost per student in the state and one of the highest achievement rates in the state. I ask the Board of Supervisors to please support our schools. The burden of repeated cuts over the last three years are concerning. Don’t wait until the best start leaving, help now. As Del. Chris Peace’s recent report released on education stated: The largest impact on student performance is the quality of teachers and school leadership. Steve Brown Mechanicsville

Promises of goodies place our young with huge debt The French philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville in 1840 prophetically said, “The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the publics’ money.” That day is here! Both parties have succumbed to the temptation of getting elected by promising ever more goodies from the public coffers, irrespective of constitutional limits, and to the point that they have irresponsibly enslaved our children with $16 trillion indebtedness. Both parties are blatantly guilty with Democrats far more so the last three years. The national debt has increased at an average of $4 billion a day under President Barack Obama. The seriousness of this led Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to exclaim, “Our national debt is our biggest national security threat.” Catherine Noble Mechanicville

Abolish Department of Education I keep hearing people wondering out loud how so many of the voting population could be so stupid as to completely

ignore what is going on around them. How could so many not care the slightest bit as they find themselves in the middle of a great civilization that is crumbling all about them? They have absolutely no idea of what always follows: Conquest. There is no preparation for the coming breakdown of law and order and shortages of all kinds. How can this be? Simple: public education. There is no competition, not enough teaching the basic building blocks and utterly misplaced priorities. The unnecessary U.S. Department of Education has been taken over for some time by appointed officials that are bent on Indoctrinating value systems, ethics and thought processes that are not compatible with a free and competitive way of life. Personal responsibility and high expectations have lost their importance. The “education system” has changed the priority to group-thinking, consensus behavior and blind obedience. Who decided that schools should force the children what to eat? The Department of Education. This nonsense must stop. Give each state the right to outlaw all public education. Let the private sector and competition undo this slide into oblivion. Give tax credits to families with students to fund the private schools. Parents will have a say about the goings-on, and sanity excellence will once again return quickly. Abolish the Department of Education and imprison the high level administrators for theft of intellectual property. Sell off the department’s real estate and assets. the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office. Clark had been shot in what was described as an accident with a gun used as a prop in a music video. Franklin Eugene Robertson III, the confessed shooter, was sentenced for involuntary manslaughter and released on probation and community service. Michael Thompson and Laquan Tullis were found guilty of misdemeanor charges of being an accessory after the fact. Da’von T. Byars, 19, of the 1400 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike in the City of Richmond; Kevin M. Drayton Jr., 18, of the 8300 block of Rollins Lane in Mechanicsville; and, Xavia S. Highsmith, 18, of the 2000 block of N. 28th Street in the City of Richmond were charged with first-degree murder in Wells’ death. They also were charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and aggravated malicious wounding. The King twins, according to Sgt. Chris R. Whitley, suffered lacerations to the neck area. Their father, based on the investigation, had channeled the exhaust from his vehicle, causing a lethal amount of carbon monoxide to collect inside the house in the 7900 block of Wynbrook Lane. Brian S. Mallory was charged

in Hakopian’s death. He had fled to Florida and was captured in Jacksonville. Maters Markham’s death stemmed from what law enforcement authorities called a domestic incident. She was living in the 8200 block of Candelberry Drive, while her estranged husband’s address was in the 7400 block of Colts Neck Road. In addition to his wife’s shooting death, Markham shot a man who was at Maters Markham’s home. Whitley said Markham was being charged with murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and aggravated malicious wounding. Coming in as the second most significant issue this year is the budget process for Hanover County Public Schools and the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. Possible job losses attracted the most attention for School Board members’ work. They agreed to a budget of $191.6 million and the elimination of 88.4 full-time positions. John F. Axselle III, chairman at the time, described the budget as “anything but happy.” Early projections called for 102.2 jobs being lost. The supervisors unanimously approved a 2013 budget of $367.9 million, with no increase in the county’s 81 cents per $100 of assess value. Action was taken in April and ended what had been termed one of

the most challenging financial environments in recent memory. In presenting his budget proposal, county administrator Cecil R. “Rhu” Harris Jr. recommended staff reductions of 50 positions and an increase of 15 percent in the cost of health insurance premiums for all employees. The $367.4 million budget marked a 6.1 percent decrease. As 2012 was winding down, the supervisors made headlines with the third top story of the year by eliminating proffers. The move followed the recommendation of an advisory committee that had been formed to review that possibility. The Cash Proffers and Capital Funding Committee also was tasked with finding alternative funding to replace the more than $24 million collected since proffers were implemented in 1991. In a 4-2 vote, the supervisors revoked the current proffer policy that requires new residential lots pay a $19,000-plus levy before a certificate of occupancy can be granted. Board vice chairman Canova Peterson, who represents the Mechanicsville District, moved that the panel accept the committee’s recommendations and remove the policy, a motion seconded by super-

visor Wayne Hazzard of the South Anna District. In addition to Peterson and Hazzard, the 4-2 measure was approved by chairman Ed Via, Ashland District, and Sean Davis, Henry District. Supervisors Angela Kelly-Wiecek, Chickahominy District, and Aubrey “Bucky” Stanley, Beaverdam District, voted against the measure. Cold Harbor supervisor Elton Wade was absent due to illness. Growth continues to be a key word on the campus of Memorial Regional Medical Center, which solicited the community’s in put in a charrette process. The No. 4 story of 2012 quoted Michael Robinson, chief executive officer, as saying, “We have transformed this facility with the support of the community into a destination center of excellence” that offers “a myriad of services.” Firefighters didn’t take proposed budget cuts well when the supervisors first started the process. Their reaction comes in at No. 5. Stewart D. Roberson, former superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools, kept a diary after the D.C. sniper struck on Oct. 19, 2002, in Ashland. He shared his diary on the 10th anniversary. Those thoughts come in as our No. 6 story of the year. “It was such a simple strategy: two men and a gun, but then — when you recognize that their selection of targets and locations and how they

were publicly defying officials — it was a strategy that I don’t believe anyone would have scripted.” The experience of putting his thoughts to paper, Roberson said, sent him to a therapeutic place. He said few were aware that he was keeping a diary of the events. He organized his thoughts into “Three Weeks in October, Managing Regional Fear During the Last Seven Days of the ‘Beltway Sniper’ Crisis.” Sue Forbes Watson surprised the Hanover County educational community when, after 36 years, she announced she would not seek reappointment to represent the Ashland District on the School Board. Her decision comes in at No. 7. On May 9, she tearfully told fellow School Board members of her plans. Axselle accepted Watson’s letter of resignation, and expressed regret that such a stalwart of the school district will be absent from the panel. “I would classify you as an education evangelist,” Axselle said. “Your family’s gain is Hanover’s loss.” Dr. Jamelle Wilson hinted Watson’s shoes would be hard to fill. “Sue has a passion for children. She has a passion for music. She has a passion for people and that translates in to her care and commitment for teachers. Sue has a heart for people.” Watson expressed a desire to spend more time with her friends and family. She did say she would continue to support the county’s education community. “I hope to use the years of experience working with outstanding educators, parents, citizens, business and political leaders and students to continue to be an advocate for quality

public education,” she said. Watson was one of the longest serving School Board members in the state, and she was the first woman on Hanover’s School Board when she was appointed in 1976. The face of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors changed with four new members taking their seats in January to be the eighth story of 2012. W. Canova Peterson IV, Mechanicsville District; Sean M. Davis, Henry; Wayne T. Hazzard, South Anna; and Angela C. Kelly-Wiecek, Chickahominy District; joined G. Ed Via III, Ashland District; Aubrey M. “Bucky” Stanley, Beaverdam District; and Elton J. Wade Sr., Cold Harbor District. Via and Peterson were elected chairman and vice chairman. Ideal was the best way to describe the 2012 Mechanicsville Christmas Parade, which had record attendance – about 1,600 -- and participation – more than 100 units, as well as Santa Claus. The annual event, sponsored by the Mechanicsville Rotary Club and Mechanicsville Ruritan Club, fills our No. 9 slot. Rounding out the Top 10 is the 2012 Hanover Tomato Festival, which, despite some precipitation, attracted 31,000 people to Pole Green Park. This year’s event, held on July 14, paid tribute to Hanover County Fire/EMS. The festival was started in 1978 by the Black Creek Volunteer Fire Department. On a sad note, the man behind the Tomato Festival – Oscar Watson – died on Sept. 7. He was a founding member and served as president of the Tomato Festival Committee. He also served his community as president and chief of the Black Creek VFD.

HAAC raising funds Moore skates his way into competitive glory Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com

The Hanover Arts & Activities Center, located at 500 S. Center St. in Ashland, is raising funds to continue its threepronged mission. Paul Burch, development chair, said the financial goals are to provide a space where arts, education and the community come together. “We rely on financial donors to provide these opportunities,” Burch said, “and to care for our historic building, which is such

an asset to Ashland.” According to Burch, HAAC is “a gathering place — for musical rehearsals, the Railroad Run, Train Day and Green Fair, AARP meetings and weekly Hanover Concert Band rehearsals.” He said it is a place “where your children find a place to grow, have fun and gain confidence through summer theatre, singing, dancing and improv. We are the place where you can go to learn about and enjoy music — classical spooky music at Halloween, Bluemont con-

certs on the lawn, Richmond Jazz Society’s Music and Me Concert, music lessons or patriotic melodies during the 4th of July celebration.” Burch also said that HAAC is the place “that supports cultural events such as Black History Month and This I Believe writing essays.” The Hanover Arts & Activities Center is a 501(c)3 organization. Citizens: watch debt clock The federal government has now borrowed more money during Barack Obama’s time as president than it did in the period lasting from the time President George Washington took the oath office until July 2, 2001, more than five months into the first term of President George W. Bush. The debt has increased $5,696,206,400,691.90 during Obama’s presidency with more than four years to come. The Census Bureau estimated in September that there were 114,916,000 households in the United States. That means that the $5,696,206,400,691.90

the Obama administration has borrowed in the name of U.S. taxpayers now equals about $49,568 per household. I’d encourage all reasonable citizens to keep an eye on www. USdebtClock.org and don’t be surprised as you watch this frightening number continue to climb, most likely doubling before President Obama is done piling this massive debt on the backs of the next generation. Ladies and gentlemen, it might be time to get your head out of the sand before it’s too late. Rose Cecil Mechanicsville

equals infinite enslavement, and that’s the point of it all. Every dollar created by the Fed and loaned to the U.S. Treasury is another dollar for which American taxpayers are placed in hock to the global banksters. Infinite spending also is infinite power over the economy. A government that has no limits on spending has no limits on its growth. It also has no moral restraint over the scope of the domain it claims to control. Need another 200,000 TSA (Transportation Security Administration) agents to run crotch-o-rama checkpoints on the streets of America? No problem: There’s no debt limit, so just invent the money out of thin air and Infinite debt equals infinite spend away! spending. Infinite debt also Need to give out more free

goodies to dumbed-down voters who only elect whichever candidate promises the most handouts? That’s easy, too: Just create more money out of thin air, rack up a few trillion dollars in additional debt, and use the money to hand out Obama phones, food stamps, welfare checks or whatever it takes. When debt no longer has any meaning, the sky’s the limit on spending, and political office can easily be bought by promising more handouts. What happens when all the new debt comes due? That’s easy, too: Borrow more money from the Fed to make the interest payments on the existing debt! They’re just numbers after all, right? It doesn’t actually matter if there are 15 zeroes after the

leading digit or 24 zeroes, does it? In a nation where the vast majority of voters are no longer capable of grasping simple mathematical concepts (like compounding debt), whether the debt is 16 trillion, or quadrillion or quintillion seems to be of no consequence whatsoever. That is, until the day of financial reckoning arrives. I’m going to throw a party on the Day of Reckoning to celebrate humanity reaching the apex of fiscal insanity. It was a journey much more expensive than sending a man to the moon, and yet we have nothing to show for it. Not even moon rocks. Hannah Kaminsky Mechanicsville see LETTERS, pg. 20

Commodity Loans available to producers who share in risk By Ken Upshaw County executive director Commodity Loans, also referred to as Marketing Assistance Loans, are available to producers who share in the risk of producing the crop. To be eligible, producers must maintain beneficial interest in the crop through the time of application. Once beneficial interest in a commodity is lost, the commodity is ineligible for loan — even if the producer regains beneficial interest. Violating provisions of a marketing assistance loan may trigger administrative actions, such as assessing liquidated damages, calling the loan and denial of future farm-stored loans. The most common violations are removing or disposing of a commodity being

used as loan collateral without prior authorization and providing an incorrect quantity certification. Hispanic and women farmer claims Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that Hispanic and women farmers and ranchers who allege discrimination by the USDA in past decades can file claims between Sept. 24, 2012, and March 25, 2013. The process offers a voluntary alternative to litigation for each Hispanic or female farmer and rancher who can prove that USDA denied their applications for loan or loan servicing assistance for discriminatory reasons for certain time periods between 1981 and 2000.

As announced in February 2011, the voluntary claims process will make available at least $1.33 billion for cash awards and tax relief payments, plus up to $160 million in farm debt relief, to eligible Hispanic and women farmers and ranchers. There are no filing fees to participate in the program. Call center representatives can be reached at 1-888-5084429. Claimants must register for a claims package (by calling the number or visiting the website) and the claims package will be mailed to claimants. The website is www. farmerclaims.gov. Independent legal services companies will administer the claims process and adjudicate the claims.

Maybe because spiritual giants like Pastor John MacArthur were preaching to their mega-churches “noninvolvement.” MacArthur tells his flock to be meek and quiet, pay taxes and follow the law, do not protest, do not waste money or time in politics, and only disobey your God-selected leaders if they want you to break God’s law. I agree with much of his Bible-based preaching, but strongly disagree with the part

about no peaceful protests or involvement in the voting process. We the people could have prevented America dying and Socialism being installed by being involved peacefully with prayer, poll volunteering, running for local offices, being on school boards, and supporting Bible-believing candidates. How is that against the Lord? Jadine S. Jett Glen Allen

Hanover Humane Society — Pet of the Week Photos submitted by Julie Nisley

The Hanover Humane Society is trying to find homes for this dog and cat. Pearl, left, is a Chinese-Crested/Terrier-mix. She is looking for a home in the Richmond metro area (counties bordering on Hanover Humane’s facility in Ashland), and her adoption fee is $150. One of Hanover Humane’s volunteers found Pearl at the Pound, and she was intrigued by the little tuft of hair on her head that makes her look a little like a gremlin. The volunteer fell in love with Pearl and she has been in the Adoptions Program since. Her veterinarian thinks she is between 8 and 10 years old. Her eyesight isn’t as good as it used to be, but she still gets around fairly well. Typical of a terrier, while she is very sweet, Pearl tends to be a little strong-willed where other animals are concerned so she might do best in a home without another dog or a home with a calmer dog. She is not fond of small children. The vet is fairly certain she has been spayed, and she is current on her vaccines (distemper, bordetella, and rabies), and she has been tested for heartworms (negative). Pearl is currently on heartworm preventative. She has been microchipped and comes with a month of free pet insurance at the time of adoption. Cleo, right, is a pretty calico with lovely markings. About 3 years old, she belonged to someone who loved her, but became ill and turned her over to the Hanover Humane Society before going into hospice care. So, it is a very sad set of circumstances for everyone, but the Hanover Humane Society is doing its best to find her another wonderful home. Cleo doesn’t seem to like the other kitties and will get agitated by them. The Humane Society will do a “trial adoption” to ensure compatibility. Cleo is described as being smart, curious, playful and observant. Her ideal home would be calm and relatively quiet, without other cats or small children (toddlers). She seems to manage all right with well-behaved, school-aged children. Busy, active, barking dogs would not be good, but a couch potato doggie friend who wouldn’t bother Cleo might be okay. She has been tested for feline leukemia and FIV with negative results, and is up-to-date on her vaccinations. Anyone interested in Pearl or Cleo may e-mail info@hanoverhumanesociety.org or call the kennel at 804-798-8248 to arrange a visit. The kennel is located at 12190 Washington Highway in Ashland.

Hanover County landowners who use their property for agricultural, horticultural or forestal uses or keep it in open space are invited to enroll in the Land Use Taxation Program. Under this program, qualified landowners can have their property assessed at “use value,” which may be lower than market value and reduce their taxes. The application period for this program begins Jan. 2 and ends Feb. 1. In order to qualify for the tax deduction, the property must be

zoned for agricultural uses and have been in agricultural, horticultural, forest or open space uses for at least five years. Property that has been zoned Rural Conservation (RC) also can qualify for the Land Use program. The minimum qualifying acreages are five acres for agricultural, horticultural and open space and 20 acres for forest use. A one-acre house site is allowed in all categories. Requirements and values are established by the State Land

Evaluation Advisory Council. If the land use is changed, the tax reduction must be repaid with simple interest for the current tax year and a maximum of the previous five tax years. Participants with acreage or use changes must reapply and revalidate their eligibility. Revalidation also is required after six years even if there is no change in land use. There is no charge for this revalidation. A $10 filing fee is charged see LAND, pg. 25

Local travels to Indonesia Photo submitted by Susan Tansey

Susan and Sean Tansey of Mechanicsville recently traveled to Bali, Indonesia, and took a copy of The Mechanicsville Local. Susan met up with Sean, who is on a year-long trip around the world. Indonesia was the fifth country visited so far by the 2001 Atlee High School graduate. He will return to Mechanicsville in April 2013.

Bobby Coleman contacted The Local last week about a contribution to the 2012 Hanover Christmas Mother Program. The listing of donors, which appeared on page 40 of our Dec. 19 edition, had Robert Coleman. He said it should have read Bertha and Bobby Coleman.

Hanover County makes real estate tax relief available for residents who are elderly or permanently disabled and who have a net worth of $200,000 or less. The application period for the upcoming year begins Jan. 15. You must apply by March 1

for the relief to be applied to the tax bills sent out later this spring and due (first half) on June 5. Applicants must be 65 years old or permanently disabled and must own or partially own the property and have lived in it on Dec. 31. If the applicant is in

a hospital or extended care facility, he or she may still qualify as long as the house is not rented or leased. The $200,000 net worth figure does not include the value of the house and up to 10 acres around it. To apply, call 804-365-6128.

on each new application. Applications will not be accepted if there are any delinquent taxes on the property. About 3,384 parcels and 156,723 acres are currently enrolled in Hanover County’s Land Use Taxation program. This represents about 55 per-

cent of the county’s total acreage. The total tax deferral realized by these property owners is about $5.5 million. For more information about the Land Use Program or other tax relief programs offered by Hanover County, call the Commissioner of the Revenue at 804-365-6125 or visit www. co.hanover.va.us/comrevnu/ default.htm.

Best game nets Yellow Jackets big win Randolph-Macon grounds Sea Gulls 77-55 By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com It is not unusual to look at Randolph-Macon men’s basketball schedule late in December and find a team with a losing record. However, it is very unusual to discover the only team with a losing record is Randolph-Macon. The Yellow Jackets came into last Wednesday’s home contest with Salisbury sporting a 3-5 record. Yet, the losing mark was a greater indication how difficult R-MC’s early season schedule was than the team’s abilities. Out of their first eight games, the Yellow Jackets faced off against five ranked teams, all on the road. Salisbury was on path to be the sixth. The Sea Gulls entered Crenshaw Gymnasium with a 9-1 record and fresh off a 76-67 victory at #1 ranked Va. Wesleyan two nights earlier. On the same night, Randolph-Macon fell 67-55 at #15 Catholic after the Yellow Jackets controlled all aspects of the contest but were plagued by 24 turnovers. The Jackets had additional motivation to succeed. Also at stake was R-MC’s 25 game regular season home court winning streak. Their last loss came on Dec. 1, 2010 to Va. Wesleyan. “We had to come out and play,” said junior forward Andre Simon. “We had to be focused and ready to play and forget about the last couple games and come out and play.” R-MC did just that. Turning in arguably their best performance of the season, the Yellow Jackets, led by Simon’s 18 points, seven rebounds, one assist, one steal and no turnovers, broke open a tight contest late in the first half then roared to a 77-55 win. “We put a lot of pieces together, defensively and offensively and we played great as a team today,” Simon said.

In a performance head coach Nathan Davis deemed the best of his career, senior Lamar Giggetts was also turnover free while scoring 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting, pulled down eight rebounds and came up with three steals and two assists. “Personally I knew that I had a bad game last game,” Giggetts said. “I knew that we definitely could have played better last game so I knew everybody’s mind set was that we needed to play harder, come out strong and keep hitting them and hitting them and don’t let up on them and that’s what we did. That’s why we got a big lead and why we came out with the win.” Sophomore forward Joe Hassell was also on the mark with 13 points, eight rebounds, one steal, one block and one turnover in 20 minutes of action. “After the loss Monday we had to come out

The Mechanicsville Local December 26, 2012

and prove something,” Hassell said. “We had to come out and prove we were better than what our record is so we came out and played our hearts out.” Sophomore guard Connor Sullivan contributed 10 points, two assists and one steal, while senior center Dylan Cole chipped in seven points, eight rebounds and two blocks in the contest. In fact, Davis felt that he got a complete game performance from every player. “I’m not sure I can find anyone who didn’t have a good game,” he said. The contest with R-MC sat as a possible trap game on Salisbury’s schedule between Va. Wesleyan and a Friday night contest at William and Mary. However, head coach Josh Merkel, an R-MC assistant in 2010-11, did not feel his Sea Gulls overlooked the Jackets. “We knew this was a very good basketball team,” Merkel said. “They’ve played on the road. They’ve played ranked teams. This is not a 4-5

team. They are not what their record indicates they are and they were better than us tonight. Bottom line, they out-played us in every phase of the game. Rebounding, getting the shots that they want and they really, really guarded us well. I don’t think it had as much to do with us winning at Va. Wesleyan as it did with them being very, very good, ready to play; play with a purpose.” Davis expected the contest to be a dogfight throughout and it followed that billing through much of the first half. R-MC was able to score on drives into the paint and went 11-of-14 from the free throw line. Salisbury kept pace by driving the baseline then kicking out to wide open shooters beyond the arc where they went 5-of-12 (41.7 percent) in the first half. Davis attributed the Sea Gulls’ long range success to Merkel’s knowledge of the R-MC defense. “He knew exactly how we were going to guard it and he was baiting us into something see JACKETS, pg. 31 `

Clark leads charge for Highland Springs By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times Dispatch In order to play at its traditional breakneck pace, the Highland Springs girls basketball team practices against the boys’ junior varsity. The guys are taller, faster and stronger than the girls. And they’re given clear instructions not to go easy on the girls. “It’s a challenge, because we have to play great defense, get steals and get our offense going,” senior Kermisha Clark said. Against No. 5 Patrick Henry on Thursday night, the second-ranked Springers (4-0) did all that with apparent ease. They caused 37 turnovers by darting into passing lanes and tapping the ball away to beat the Patriots 72-43 in the first round of the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament. Patrick Henry (8-1) was dealt its first loss of the season. In the five seasons Coach Franklin Harris has been at Highland Springs, he’s always

JACKETS Continued from pg. 30

so we had to adjust how we were rotating,” Davis said. “Our guys did a better job on the ball, then adjusting to how they were rotating, then getting back out on the weak side to cover those shooters.” The Jackets held Salisbury to 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from beyond the arc in the second half. With 5:58 to play in the first, Hassell broke the game’s sixth tie with a layup to push R-MC ahead 29-27 and the Jackets slowly began widening the margin. Trailing 39-30 at the break, Salisbury trimmed the lead to four, 47-43 with 12 minutes remaining, but the Jackets

opened games with a fullcourt press defense. Thursday was no different. The Springers jumped out to a 12-0 lead as Patrick Henry struggled to

make a shot. “We use the press to get us going and get the defensive mindset going,” Harris said. “It gets them into the game and

gets the juices flowing.” Holding a 17-9 lead after one quarter, Highland Springs scored the first 10 points of the second quarter and never

answered with a disheartening 16-3 run to put the game away. The Jackets defense faced a difficult task in slowing Sea Gull guard Travon Vann, who came into the contest averaging nearly 24 points per game. Davis told his team prior to the contest that Vann was the best player they would see since playing against the University of Richmond in the preseason. The Jackets appeared to take that to heart. Vann did not get a single shot off in the first half and finished the game with five points. “I know for me and my other teammates, since we lost Monday, we knew we had to do better and step it up on defense especially and come out and beat them,” Hassell said. “Our coach sent us a challenge so we

met the challenge and we beat them.” Merkel credited R-MC for Vann’s bad night. “You can’t guard him with one player,” Merkel said. “They guarded him with five players. Their length-they’re physical and they know what they’re doing.” The Jackets plan to feed off the win as they head into the meat of their schedule. “It’s just a big win for us,” Giggetts said. “Going into break we need this win to get the momentum going so when we come back we know we can beat every team ahead of us if we can beat a team like that.” The Yellow Jackets return to action hosting the R-MC Coaches Classic on Dec. 29 when they play Washington College in a 3 p.m. contest. On

Sunday Dec. 30 they will then play either Frostburg State or Manhattanville at 1 p.m. or 3 p.m. RANDOLPH-MACON 77, SALISBURY 55 SALISBURY (9-2) Elijah Gore 4-10 0-0 12; Trent Epps 5-9 1-7 11; Chris Viqueira 3-6 0-0 8; Travon Vann 2-4 1-4 5; Troy King 2-5 0-0 4; Tim Harwood 2-9 0-0 4; Craig Ryan 1-4 0-0 3; Dylan Robeson 1-1 0-0 3; Brandyn Wilkerson 1-2 0-0 3; Luke Ruland 0-1 2-2 2; Derrick Miller 0-0 0-0 0; Kyle Savercool 0-2 0-0 0; Conor Strickland 0-0 0-0 0. let the Patriots back in the game. Clark led all scorers with 20 points, DeJune’ Robinson added 15 and NaJai Pollard notched 14. Summer Price paced Patrick Henry with 16 points. Amber Lee added 11. At one point in the third quarter, Clark scored 10 straight points for the Springers. When her teammates were able to steal the ball in transition, they found Clark waiting unguarded beneath the basket to receive the ball. It might come as a surprise that the Springers don’t run all that often in practice. While Harris makes them sprint for missed free throws, he doesn’t have his players running suicides all day long. Instead, the Springers go at game pace all practice, every practice. Harris said it takes an intense commitment from his players to take practice so seriously and to give so much effort. Having conditioned so

much, Clark said she isn’t worried about playing that style three days in a row. “As we say, we sell our soul to the floor,” Harris said. Due to holiday press deadlines, further results of the TDIT were not available. HIGHLAND SPRINGS PATRICK HENRY 43
