sity. Jordan McCarter is a junior at Hanover High School and is enrolled in the Junior ROTC. “Going into the Air Force is a major part of my future and this program has given me a lot of opportunities,” McCarter said. Atlee junior Jeffrey Tucker isn’t sure about his military future, but said the program provided the discipline he needs to excel. “I think it’s good training all around whether you go into the military or not,” Tucker said. “I thinking of going into engineering when I graduate.” The Air Force Association sponsors the event, hosted at Atlee High School for the past
seven years. A cadre of AFA volunteers mans the booths, does the legwork and organizes the event. David and Holly Hartley are active members of the Richmond chapter of the association and have worked on the competition at Atlee for years. “Most of our members are ex-Air Force, but that’s not a requirement,” David said. There are about 600 members in the Richmond area and five other chapters in the state. Holly said preparing for the event can be challenging. “It’s massive,” she said. “Everybody pitches in and lends a hand and everybody has a job.” Holly said the quality of the students always amazes her. “These kids are absolutely outstanding,” she said. “The dis-

cipline is wonderful for them and they are excited about this competition. They are hard workers.” Paul Willard runs the Junior ROTC program at King William High School, a smaller unit with about 45 members. All four branches of the service run Junior ROTC programs, and schools select which ones to feature at their schools. Students select ROTC as an academic elective just like band or chorus, and can pursue a four-year curriculum that includes basic theories of flight, management and space technology. It’s a career-driven curriculum that focuses on college preparatory courses. “Less than 5 percent of ROTC students will actually enter the military,” Willard said.
“But they will go somewhere, and the whole program is based on citizenship, civics and government.” The program also has a major physical fitness element. “It’s a great opportunity for a kid,” Willard said. Charles Schmetzer and Will Monge run the program at Atlee High School. Monge said the school hosts the event annually and it grows in popularity each year. “It’s a great competition. When you get this many students and instructors from the state, it’s a great atmosphere and the kids really enjoy it,” he said. Once the competition was completed, the students were treated to a performance by the elite United States Air Force Drill Team from Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C.

Prices Are on the Rise
The latest Case Shiller Home Price Index revealed that home prices have appreciated 5.5% over the last year. This is occurring across the nation as increases were reported in 19 of 20 metros. The Home Price Expectation Survey, which polls a distinguished panel of over 100 economists, investment strategists, and housing market analysts, calls for continued appreciation over the next five years.

Mortgage Interest Rates Are Expected to Increase
The Mortgage Bankers Association has predicted that, after reaching record lows in 2012, mortgage rates will creep up slowly in 2013 to 4.4%. Rates have already increased by 2/10 of a point (3.32 to 3.53) in the last two months.

Rents Are Continuing to Skyrocket
Recently, Zillow reported that rents in the U.S. increased by 4.2% over the last year. Increases were 5% or more in many major metropolitan areas including Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Detroit, Baltimore, Denver, San Jose and Charlotte.
Timelines Will Be Shorter
The dramatic increase in transactions caused many challenges to the process of buying or selling a home in 2012. We waited for inspections, dealt with last minute appraisals and prayed that the bank didn’t ask for ‘just one more piece of paper ’ before issuing a commitment on the mortgage. There are fewer transactions this time of year. That means that timetables on each component of the home buying process will be friendlier for those involved in transactions over the next 90 days.
Six regulators, including the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Securities and Exchange Commission, are currently drafting the new Qualified Residential Mortgage (QRM) rule. They will decide on two major requirements for buyers looking to qualify for a mortgage: minimum down payment and minimum FICO score. Many experts believe the new rules will be more stringent than current requirements.

LETTERS
Supervisor steps up on appointment
| Reader Views
Whether you agree with him or not, you’ve got to give Cold Harbor District Supervisor Elton Wade credit: He took on his critics and explained why he is making a change on the Hanover County School Board. The letter to the editor that appears on this page was brought to our office last Wednesday by Wade. He is not apologetic, per se, in terms of his decision to appoint Norman Sulser to the School Board. Some may be disappointed that he does not plan to reappoint Robert Wood; others may applaud the move. Regardless, the way the procedure is established in Hanover County affords the supervisor of a particular district to appoint members to the School Board. While this recent hoopla has gained some momentum in the media, including our letters to the editor forum, it has drawn attention to the interest of some residents/voters in pursuing an elected School Board. Before going any further, I’ll jump right out and say that I’ve made no secret of my own opinion on that subject. I support an elected School Board. And don’t interpret that as having an issue with any member of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors or their appointments. Some of the comments — and they always seem to start out with “THIS” Board of Supervisors, with an emphasis as you can tell on this — seem stirred by the proffer issue and funding for the school system. Of course, there are the occasional anonymous callers who pretty much want someone to listen as they vent their frustrations and opinions. They are always encouraged to express themselves on this page. In addition to the Cold Harbor seat, the South Anna District also is on today’s agenda for candidates interested in the School Board appointments. This is strictly a “declare your candidacy” item for the supervisors. While there has been plenty of buzz about Wayne Hazzard’s plan to replace Ann Gladstone, we have not received any official word on who will fill the seat. In the meantime, what are your thoughts on electing those members? We welcome your feedback. Melody Kinser

Supervisor explains support for School Board seat I would like to share with the citizens of Hanover County why I plan to support Norman Sulser for the Hanover County School Board from the Cold Harbor District. Mr. Sulser served eight years in an outstanding manner on the Hanover County School Board from 1985 to 1993. During this time he demonstrated his leadership skills while serving as School Board chairman for one year and as vice chairman for one year. During his eight-year tenure on the School Board they completed the planning and renovation of Patrick Henry High School and Lee-Davis High School from open campus school to the enclosed structure they enjoy today. They also planned and built Atlee High School, Chickahominy Middle School and Cold Harbor Elementary School. Mr. Sulser was always considered a team player on the School Board and was liked and respected by his fellow board members. During these eight years he served three Cold Harbor supervisors — Richard Rhoades, Kip Davis and Elton Wade – and they all believed he did an outstanding job. Prior to his appointment in 1985, Mr. Sulser was a member of the PTA for 18 years and he served as president of the PTA at Lee-Davis High School. He also had experience in the classroom as he taught evening Adult Education classes for Henrico County for more than 10 years. Mr. Sulser has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology/ Business Administration and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. He attended Bridgewater College, the University of Virginia and the University of Northern Colorado. He retired in 2001 after 38 years as a manager with the U.S. Treasury Department. Additionally, he was selected as the Internal Revenue Manager of the Year in the United States in 2000. Since his retirement in 2001, he has served for the past 12 years as a long-term and short-term substitute teacher in Hanover County, primarily at Lee-Davis High School. His dedication and commitment to the students at Lee-Davis is reflected in the respect and love they have for him. He expects and commands respect in the classroom. Not only is he recognized for his teaching skills in the classroom, but he has always been a loyal and faithful supporter of drama, choral, band, football, baseball and softball, as well as other activities at Lee-Davis. Mr. Sulser has been a tireless volunteer working over the past 40-plus years to make Hanover County a great place to live. He served 24 years as a volunteer Reserve Deputy Sheriff. This involved tremendous sacrifice for him, his wife
and family in order to help provide protection and help to the citizens of Hanover County. He has been a member of the Hanover Hatcher Cole Fraternal Order of Police for the past 32 years. He was a member of the Mechanicsville Jaycees for seven years. He has been a member of the Mechanicsville Ruritan Club for the past 31 years where he has worked on numerous community projects. These projects involved providing each year 12 $4,000 college scholarships to graduates of Atlee, Hanover and Lee-Davis, as well as fundraising projects to make contributions to the Fire/EMS in Hanover County. He served as president of the Gaines Mill Homeowners Association for eight years. He was involved as a volunteer for the Hanover Tomato Festival for more than 25 years. He has been involved as a volunteer for the Mechanicsville Rotary-Ruritan Christmas Parade since its beginning. He has been an active member of the Fairfield Presbyterian Church for approximately 45 years and has served with his wife as a youth and as an adult Sunday School teacher for more than 20 years and also has served with his wife as the Senior High Youth Coordinator. In summary, if anyone or any group in Hanover County ever needs help, they know Mr. Sulser will jump and do his best to assist them. In reading the above you can see why I can give a 100% endorsement and commitment to Mr. Sulser’s selection to the Hanover County School Board. This is an extremely important position and I believe Mr. Norman Sulser can return to the Hanover County School Board and do an outstanding job in the same manner as he did on his first eight years on the Hanover County School Board. She and her mother Tammy dance together in a mother-daughter group class. “It’s more lyrical,” she said of dancing with her mom. In addition to the classes at her aunt’s studio, Brittany studies ballet at The Dance Studio, where she said she is learning “more traditional ballet there.” On Friday, she will put her skills to the test when she auditions for the dance team at Randolph-Macon. “I do work out with a trainer separately to keep up athletically,” Brittany noted. “I make sure that my core is as strong as it can be.” While she shares the passion for dance with her mother, Brittany has a special connection with her dad with photography. She likes working with film. Brittany enjoys freelance writing. To strengthen her

Her favorite novel is Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights.” The recent pageant, she said, was a group effort. “I couldn’t have done it without the other contestants and they were a huge support system to me and I can’t thank them enough. anover High School celebrated its 10 year anniversary with many several memorable activities, including its 1st “Hanover Hawks 5K,” which was held on Saturday, April 20. Christian school to open in fall Have you ever wondered why there are no alternatives to public high school in Hanover County? There are approximately 45 religious high schools in the Greater Richmond area. The total offerings in Hanover County: zero. Families in our community that have chosen Christian education for their children have found themselves asking where their children will attend school once their current institution runs out of grade levels to offer. Parents looking for an alternative when their children reach high school age also have recognized the lack of options available in our community. Seeking the answer to the same question for my two children, I shared an idea to establish a school in the Mechanicsville area with several like-minded families. The vision was well received, and, in a matter of months, we were in the early stages of welcoming Hanover County’s first Christian middle and high school. Co-founder Corey Doise and I recruited what we believe to be an incredibly passionate and talented Board of Directors to thrust this new school into motion. Grace Christian School, a nonprofitindependentChristian middle and high school located on Atlee Road, will begin serving the residents of Hanover County and the surrounding communities in the fall. Over the past several years, there has been no shortage of attention given towards planning academic excellence for our students joined with the cultivation of Christian fundamentals. Yet the continued success of this new school is largely due to the many families and volunteers who have demonstrated
their loyal support. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we thank you and members of the Mechanicsville community for your time and your continued prayers. Your dedication is the reason we have already reached 50 percent of our desired enrollment for next fall. For more information, please visit our website at www. grace-school.net. To the families that have already enrolled their children at Grace Christian School for Fall 2013, we thank you for your enthusiasm and trust. We look forward to serving and educating your children. In Christ, Mike Bowes Founder Grace Christian School Mechanicsville
Elected School Board needed Hanover County Public Schools is in need of an elected school board that has direct oversight of all polices and implementation of those polices. Our schools provide an excellent education to the vast majority of students, however, when it comes to special education the school system seems to lack the ability or willingness to implement the Individual Education Plans that the school system themselves create. When my son completed eighth grade, he was on the Honor Roll for the first time, he was so proud of himself and was extremely excited about his starting high school. His teachers at Chickahominy Middle School had worked very hard and I could not have been more pleased with the services provided. My son was reading at grade level and was passed his SOLs (Standards of Learning). The first month at Atlee High School seemed to be going well, since I had did not hear from the school.
Once the schools began calling, it quickly became apparent that they were not following the IEP that was in place that began a series of at least 10 meetings that were not productive, despite my pleas for more supervision and consequences for my son’s behavior, my concerns were dismissed. My son even took a knife to school and it was never addressed, even after asking for consequences to be implemented, no one ever took action. I begged the IEP (Individualized Education Program) “team to place him at another school, even the alternative school. I was once again ignored and told a new behavior plan would be put in place. The same results followed. My son basically went from happy Honor Roll student, to basically failing ninth grade. Another request for another school was denied at the beginning of the next school year. After warning the school that my son’s behavior was escalating and to please follow the IEP closely, my son got in trouble, while wandering the halls unsupervised. This began a chain of events that altered his life forever, and we are now hoping for a GED (General Educational Development). I am not blaming Hanover County Public Schools for my son’s behavior; however, the inability or unwillingness to follow the same IEP they developed contributed to my son’s downfall. During this process I have appealed to every administrator — at both the school and district level — including no response from the superintendent. I have spoken with an attorney that agrees that gross negligence may have taken place, but the Sovereignty Laws in the Commonwealth of Virginia make it almost impossible to sue the school. I have filed complaints at all levels of government, including see LETTERS, pg. 19

Patrick Henry during the tumultuous years leading up to the American Revolution. It was at Scotchtown that he formulated the ideas of his famous “Liberty or Death” speech and it was from the house that he rode to St. John’s Church in Richmond on March 23, 1775, to deliver it. Data Directions Inc., which is located at 8510 Bell Creek Road, has been providing IT (Information Technology) support
services to ASK for five years. According to Mark Creery, Data Directions president, they were “delighted to help with the design and production of the new website www. askweb.org.” He said ASK had outgrown its old website and needed a new one to better support their communication and programs requirements. Creery also said that the new site incorporates a colorful new design, the latest web features and technology, and a sophisti-
cated content management system that will provide ASK staff with improved capability to promote and manage events, services, news and social networking capabilities. “This was a great opportunity for our team to work with the ASK team to develop an informative and entertaining website that reflects the energy and spirit of the Foundation,” Creery added. During our two-year nightmare, I was surprised to run across many families that have experienced similar problems, including several families that speak of bullying, lack of supervision on the school buses and various other complaints. The one thing we all have in common is no recourse. Our schools are one of our community’s greatest assets and serve the majority well. An elected school board that demands accountability from school officials seems like the most effective way to live within budgets and supervise the implementation of all policies. The system we have in place has very little accountability and keeps most problems from being known by the public. Hanover County Public Schools failed my son and the people responsible will never be held accountable. South Anna. Now an identical substitution has once again cleared the zoning board and is speeding its way to final passage: A proposal to rezone what had been approved as 112 condominiums into a 172-apartment complex in Chickahominy, at the intersection of Atlee Station and Kings Acre roads. The government of Hanover County does not seem to understand the message homeowners just sent: They do not want more apartments. They do not want them here or there. They do not want them anywhere. Not with a fox. Not in a box. Not with a mouse. Not instead of a house. And, most especially, not instead of 112 condominiums at the border of the Chickahominy and Ashland districts. Defending his position as only one of two supervisors who voted in favor of apartments at Lakeridge, Ed Via of Ashland was vocal in his disregard of widespread popular opposition to the plan. His belief in his better judgment is noted, as is the expectation that he will decide that residents of Kings Charter have no legitimate basis for objecting to a second apartment complex only three blocks from the
existing one on Kings Charter Drive. In contrast, Chickahominy supervisor Angela Kelly-Wiecek was one of five who listened to the anger from homeowners and blocked approval of the Lakeridge rezoning. If she intends to do otherwise now that the development is slated for her district, she owes everyone an explanation as to why a bad idea in South Anna is suddenly a good one in Chickahominy. Hanover County is rapidly gaining a reputation for having the best government that developers can buy. Let us hope that, in this instance, the Board of Supervisors fails to live up to it. Joseph Pierro Mechanicsville
Freedom and public safety This is to respond to Frederick Liewehr’s letter to me in the April 17 edition of The Local: First, you are quite right. I should not have used the word “banned” to describe automatic weapons. In trying to be brief, I was inaccurate. My apologies. Instead of “banned,” what I should have said was, “prohibited unless you have cleared a major federal background
check, paid a license fee sufficient enough to discourage a majority of gun dealers from going to the trouble and expense, and pay a tax on every qualifying weapons transaction you make.” Come to think of it, that sounds like just the thing for civilian possession of semiautomatic weapons designed for killing people, high-capacity magazines and the like. Second, Mr. Liewehr, you need to re-read what I wrote. I did not call modern-day civilian possession of weapons “anarchy.” I said a government that cares only for individual freedom at the expense of the best interests of society as a whole is not government but anarchy. That was most assuredly not what the founders had in mind. More importantly for the issue at hand, I noted that we the people can, have and will continue to adjust the standards by which we as a society judge where the line should be between personal freedom and public safety and wellbeing. And, yes, I called the way some people behave about their guns an addiction. Sensible, mature and reasonable gun owners – the ones that have no problem with proper background checks on all sales, for example – are certainly not that way, but the behaviors exhibited

ing the Bill of Rights, I understand it thoroughly. I’m aware of the fight over the Bill as a whole – the Father of the Constitution himself did not want it, as he feared that enumerating specific rights could later be used as an excuse to take away other rights, a very prophetic view
– and of the battles over the 2nd specifically. But I also understand something else: While I have the utmost respect for the men who formed our great country, I recognize that most of them would be aghast at the way some peosee LETTERS, pg. 24

Sargeant Reynolds Community College (JSRCC) will hold its 40th Commencement at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 12, at the Verizon Wireless Arena in the Virginia Commonwealth University Stuart C. Siegel Center, located at 1200 West Broad St. in Richmond. J. Sargeant “Sarge” Reynolds Jr., the son of the late lieutenant governor of the Commonwealth for whom the college was named, will deliver the commencement speech on the occasion of the college’s 40th anniversary. Reynolds is an enthusiastic advocate of the college’s mission and longtime supporter of the JSRCC Educational Foundation Board, having served for more than two decades. “Being asked to deliver the 40th commencement is an honor and it’s emotional.
Education and opportunity were so important to my dad, and I know he would be incredibly pleased and proud to see what the college has done for the community and what the community has done for Reynolds,” he said. The senior J. Sargeant Reynolds was a member of the House of Delegates, the Senate of Virginia and lieutenant governor of Virginia from 1970 to 1971, and is best remembered for advocating Virginia’s Community College System. He heralded the creation of the community college system by the General Assembly as “one of its finest acts and finest hours in this century.” JSRCC was named in his honor after his death in 1971. Serving more than 21,000 students annually, the college is the youngest and third largest see SON, pg. 26

Finally, thanks for reminding me of another founding father’s prophetic words. Hanover Humane visits Heritage Christian Academy Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com “Chip,” a former Hanover Humane Society pup, recently visited with the fifth and sixth grade students at Heritage Christian Academy at 10058 Chamberlayne Road in Mechanicsville. The visit was organized by Jennie Smith and Cindy Turner, two teachers at the school. Smith and Turner, with the help of the students and their parents, organized a supply drive for the Hanover Humane Society consisting of food, kitty litter and cleaning supplies. The students also collected $174.11 in donations to help the animals in Hanover Humane’s Adoption program.
The donations were presented to Hanover Humane the day of the visit. The day of the visit, the students learned about the Hanover Humane Society, which was formed in 1986 and, now, 27 years later, owns its own facility. The children learned about the role that Hanover Humane plays in getting homes for cats and dogs pulled from local pounds as well as those surrendered to the organization by their owners. The various boarding, grooming and training services offered by Hanover Humane were discussed with the children. Students also learned about

As graduation nears, trio continue military path By Jodi Deal jdeal@mechlocal.com
“Over the years we’ve kept in touch, gotten together and swapped stories,” said Scaplehorn, who will graduate on May 16 from the Virginia Military Institute at Lexington. “We try to one-up each other on who’s having the hardest time at school,” Scaplehorn added jokingly. He is a native of Mechanicsville and graduated from Atlee High School. Scaplehorn will enter the next leg of his journey with Perry, a native of Ashland who has spent the years since his graduation from Patrick Henry High School attending the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Both have been assigned to report for flight school this summer in Pensacola, Fla., to become naval aviators. Perry will graduate on May 24.

They’re not at the same college. They’re not related. However, they’ve all three walked a very similar path. All three are graduating this spring from military colleges. All three graduated from Hanover County schools in 2009. Before that, the three were all avid Boy Scouts, each attaining Eagle Scout rank, scouting’s highest honor. “There’s a sense of, I guess, brotherhood that I don’t have with a lot of other people,” said Cadet Dickerson, who is getting ready to finish up his stint at the United States Military Hometown memories Academy at West Point, N.Y. Originally from Ashland, Dickerson was in the same Boy Scout troop as Scaplehorn. Dickerson said he decided to join the miliHe will graduate on May 25. tary because his father, Malcolm Dickerson,

served in the U.S. Army for 31 years. “I had a sense of duty to the country, an obligation,” Dickerson said. “I wanted to give back in whatever way I could. I felt like service to my country is how I could repay all that I’ve been given in life.” Perry said it was Dickerson’s father who originally got him thinking about joining a branch of the military. The other two boys already had an interest, but Perry got on board after Dickerson’s father took them to a National Eagle Scout Association jamboree at the Naval Academy. Perry is now the school’s NESA president. Scaplehorn reports inspiration from Dickerson’s father, as well, and from his grandfather, William Scaplehorn, a career Marine. He also said his feelings about military service were solidified when Shane Adcock, a former member of Scaplehorn’s scout troop, was killed in the line of duty while serving overseas. ing as an Army striker platoon leader – he still has one last hurrah set with Perry before they’re put on opposite ends of the country. “Right after we graduate, Brian and I have to go reclaim unfinished business on a mountain in Maine from when we were 13,” Perry said with a laugh. The two made it nearly to the top of the mountain on a Boy Scout hike before a torrential deluge made it impossible to keep going. Other members of their troop finished the mountain several years later, but the two cadets were already fulfilling military commitments by the time the next trip rolled around. Dickerson said he feels sure all three will be catching up and conquering challenges whenever their leave time allows it for many years to come. Whether it’s a holiday dinner, a cup of coffee or a backpacking trip in the Shenandoah Valley, Dickerson said he foresees continuing contact. Dickerson is the son of Mary and Malcolm Dickerson of Ashland; Perry is the son of Chris and Sharon Perry of Ashland; and Scaplehorn is the son of Ken and Wendy Scaplehorn of Mechanicsville.

Pitching plan pays off for Confederates Lee-Davis goes six for first six on the mound to down Atlee 4-0
www.mechlocal.com See slideshow online!
By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com Over his time as head baseball coach for the Lee-Davis Confederates, Kenny Lewis developed a big bag of tricks which have proven useful in games. On Wednesday night, Lewis reached deep into that satchel of schemes and pulled out a gem allowing the C-feds to claim a 4-0 win at No. 4 ranked Atlee. Lewis sent a new pitcher to the mound for each of the first six innings, keeping the Raiders off balance at the plate and giving the Confederates the opportunity to take the win. At game’s end, the C-fed battery looked more like a batting line-up; Jacob Johnson, Chad Baron (2), Josh Lam(3), Cody Powers (4), Andrew Sergant (5), Justin Sorkowski (6) and Adam Boyle. While Lee-Davis has been known to pull a sly move or two over the years, in this case Lewis’ plan was more necessity than trickery. Where most teams have an ace pitcher complimented by two or three reliable others in the rotation, LeeDavis has capable young hurlers who have displayed difficulty

going the distance. “Our kids are giving it everything they have but they’ll hit a bump in the second inning, the third inning; second time through the lineup,” Lewis said. “Baseball’s a numbers game and it was jumping out at us we’ve been leaving them out there a little too long. But then we thought, ‘What is too long?’” Throughout the early season, the Lee-Davis pitchers would look solid then suddenly hit a wall. “(They’d) stay in there and do a good job through the first three or four innings,” Boyle said. “In the fourth inning, the lineup may be coming through for the third time and they’d start hitting the ball and hitting it harder. The next thing you know it’s too late to bring in

another pitcher because they’re up five-six runs.” Lewis searched for a solution and recalled something he had tried years ago, which is just as much a mental tactic as a physical plan of attack. The veteran coach’s instructions were specific. “It’s a very well-defined role- three outs,” Lewis said. “Not a complete game. Not six outs. Not a nohitter. Three outs. “Do you have that in you?” Lewis asked his pitchers. “And of course what would any kid say, ‘Of course Coach. I can do that’.” At Atlee, the multi-pitcher rotation became routine. Every time Lee-Davis came to the plate, a new C-fed pitcher would head to the bullpen then take the mound when Atlee
came to bat. As Cody Powers headed to the field in the bottom of the fourth, he said the system allowed each of the pitchers to come out and throw their best stuff with no worries of getting tired. Powers picked up the win. While the mound approach was calming for his pitchers, Lewis anticipated a different feeling for opposing offenses. “I know how hitters are, our kids are the same way,” he said. “After the first inning they’re going to say, ‘We’re going to get to this kid. We’re going to get to this kid.’ Well, if the kid’s not there
you’re never going to get to him. So if you’re seeing different arm slots, you’re constantly seeing different ball movements, trajectories, speed; if you’re constantly seeing something different, an argument can be made that it’s effective.” Atlee head coach Barry Burton could not disagree. “There’s something to be said for that theory,” he said. “We’ve thought about it too.” The six C-fed pitchers limited Atlee’s potent bats to four hits in the game. In only one inning did the Raiders send more than four batters to the plate with at trio of three-up,
three down appearances. While not happy with his team’s offensive production, Burton could only compliment the Lee-Davis pitchers. “Every single one of them did what they were supposed to do and threw it across the plate,” he said. “Hats off.” While the pitching plan makes it difficult on batters, the player under the most pressure was catcher Adam Boyle, who likewise had to constantly adjust to changing styles. “It’s difficult,” he said. “It’s a little nerve-racking when they get it, but it’s exciting just catching all see PITCHERS, pg. 35 `
Raiders hang on to defeat Confederates, 2-1 By Dave Lawrence For The Mechanicsville Local With a 2-1 victory over visiting Lee-Davis on Thursday night, the Atlee varsity softball team may have seized the driver’s seat atop of the Capital District standings, but the Confederates did allow the victory to come easily. Despite seven hits and three Lee-Davis errors, the host Raiders could not build a bigger lead, and despite 13 strikeouts by Atlee starter Jessica Holte, the Confederates kept battling at the plate and on the base paths. “We know every time we play them that it’s going to be a one- or two-run ball game because we know each other and play each other twice a year,” said Atlee head coach John Earley. “The kids play together during
the fall and during the summer. They know each other and know their habits, know where they hit the ball, so we always count on a close game.” The game was close despite a spate of Atlee base runners – eight of whom were stranded over six innings. The Raiders’ inability to score was in large part due to a tough Confederate defense – especially a diving catch by Lee-Davis shortstop Brooke Martin that ended a significant Raider threat in the third inning. Earley said both teams made great plays amid some of the less stellar play. “Their shortstop made a fantastic play on a ball that one girl crushed which would have allowed two more runs,” Earley said. “Our third baseman made

second. Facing Lee-Davis senior Chad Baron, Luke Bolka led off by beating out a chopper to third then reached third when Baron slipped on the grass chasing Evan Swecker’s shot to the mound. Baron then walked Roy Coates and Atlee had bases loaded with no one out. Lewis felt if any pitcher could escape the situation, it was Baron. “He’s a very bright kid. A very smart kid. Very baseball savvy,” Lewis said indicating his game plan may have helped ease the pressure Baron faced. “That kid on the mound’s got to think, ‘Uh oh!’ then, ‘All I’ve got to do is get three outs. I’ve just got to get three outs’.” Baron got Cody Thompson to hit into a fielder’s choice to third. Sorokowski cleanly fielded the ball to get the first out with a force on Bolka at home. Baron then faced a bigger challenge, falling behind Caleb Myers 3-1 but came away with a strikeout. “That I thought was a pivotal part of the game,” Lewis

of these guys.” Boyle had the benefit of catching for many of the pitchers since he was eight years old. “It’s not too bad but it’s a little crazy- a little hectic.” The C-fed offense did their part to apply pressure by quickly scoring in the top of the first inning. Brett Langhorne led off by blistering a single down the first base line, stole second then advanced to third when Sean King chopped a shot to the mound. Sorokowski sent Langhorne home on a fielder’s choice to second. “I think that’s a big start, getting one run in the first inning,” Langhorne said. “Kind of gets the other team a little down. That’s a big thing to do.” On defense, Jacob Johnson came to the mound for LeeDavis for a three-up, threedown. The Raiders let a golden opportunity slip through their fingers in the bottom of the
a nice play behind the base. Our catcher, she made a nice play. And our right fielder made a nice play in that last inning. “So routine plays, we both goofed up on a few of them, but we both made some fantastic plays to end an inning or to prevent a rally from happening.” Lee-Davis coach Jackie Davis was still disappointed with the number of errors the Confederates made. “We did have some nice defensive plays,” Davis said. “They played okay, but we probably made as many errors tonight as we have all season long. That’s hard to swallow when we’ve been on top of our game defensively.” Davis said her team might have been overly amped up for the game, which was postponed
twice because of weather and field conditions. “They get so hyped up for this game,” Davis said. “And then, you know, we were supposed to play Tuesday and were kind of let down, then Wednesday, get kind of hyped up and let down, and then today. Sometimes it can be they’re just too excited to play it and they’re not settled in. But that works both ways. Atlee was in the same situation. They had to wait to play, too.” Confederate errors led to both Atlee runs. In the second inning, Raider third baseman Raine Wilson, first baseman Delani Farrar, and designated player Blair Jones singled to load the bases with two outs. said. “Pivotal.” Next Baron got David Graubics to ground out to first ending the inning without giving up a score. “That was killer,” Burton said. “You need to capitalize on those things, yada, yada, yada, yada, and we didn’t get it done,” Behind the pitching of Swecker, Burton felt Atlee scores would have changed the complexion of the game. “You’ve got your top notch guy on the mound and you’re probably going to break the game open if you can come in there and get the top of the order up and what have you, but that didn’t happen.” Atlee missed another opportunity to score in the bottom of the fourth. With one out Coates dropped a single along the right line and was replaced on base by speedy pinch runner Brandon Crosby. When Thompson blasted a deep shot to center, Crosby took off. Whether it was a coach’s call or his own decision, it was bad.
Crosby was standing on second when the catch was made in center field to turn an extremely easy double-play. That gave Lee-Davis the chance to break things open in the top of the sixth. Langhorne reached on an error, stole second and reached third when a pick-off attempt went wide. With one out, Sorokowski laid down a bunt and the toss home to catch Langhorne bounced high out of Coates’ glove. One out later, Lam drilled a shot across third then both he and pinch runner Brandon Johnson came home, for a 4-0 lead, when Sergant dropped a perfectly placed hit into short right. Sorokowski came to the mound in the bottom of the sixth and was the only LeeDavis pitcher to go more than one inning. The freshman faced seven Atlee batters, striking out two. “He was the one kid, if you looked at the numbers, if somebody’s got to throw two, he’s the kid,” Lewis said.
second inning of the Raiders’ 2-1 Capital District victory over visiting Lee-Davis Thursday.
While being saddled with the loss, Swecker turned in a solid performance on the mound for the Raiders. “He was absolutely super,” Burton said. “He throws strikes. He competes. He hangs in there. You’ve got to get him some runs.” Though effective against Atlee, Lewis is unsure if he would continue to utilize his multiple pitcher plan. “Tonight it worked,” he said. “We may go with it and the next time it may not, but I think there’s something to it.” On Friday night, Lee-Davis went back to their multi-pitcher plan, handing Varina an 11-7 loss. “We don’t have an ace like Bolka or Derek Casey of Hanover,” Boyle said. “We don’t have no over-powering pitchers, so what we have to do is use everything to our advantage. We have to use all of our arms and keep it fresh on the mound.” On the same night Atlee got back on the winning bath with an 11-0, five-inning romp of Highland Springs.

Sour Senior Day for Yellow Jacket foursome Local products look to use loss as motivation for NCAA run By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com On Sunday afternoon, four Randolph-Macon senior baseball players stepped onto Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park for the final home game of their college careers. Opening ceremonies lauded the college baseball achievements of Jeb Weymouth, Michael Helbig, Jake Fletcher and Austin Carpenter but the day ended in disappointment as visiting Wesley (21-17-0) came away with a 2-0 shutout win. “It will be a tough one to swallow,” Weymouth said. The senior foursome had plenty to celebrate coming into the contest. The class of 2013 is currently tied for with the most career wins in school history
with 85 and needed a victory over Wesley to surpass the mark set by the class of 2011. After an illustrious career at Hanover High School, Weymouth made 149 starts as a Yellow Jacket and ranks second all-time in program history with 205 hits and nearly 300 total bases. He will graduate as the all-time leader in runs scored (145) and at bats (598). Weymouth is also third in career doubles (44), fourth in RBI (110), third in walks (89) and fifth in extra base hits (57). Fletcher, who appeared in 121 games over the course of his career, made his individual mark in the R-MC history books three years ago by becoming the first player to hit
a home run at newly opened Hugh Stephens Field. Carpenter, a Richmond native, was one of only six R-MC students to receive an Omicron Delta Kappa Student Leadership Award this year. With 22 wins as a pitcher, Helbig is one victory away from tying the all-time R-MC career record. Mechanicsville’s Allen heads to Detroit By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com Last week Skyler Allen achieved one of his life ambitions by being selected by the Detroit Lions as a Priority Free Agent following the 2013 National Football League Draft. Becoming a professional football player at the highest level of the sport has been a goal for Allen since growing up in Hanover County. Allen got his start in football playing for the Blue Stars and Chickahominy Middle School. From there he logged his freshman season at Atlee High School. However, wanting to further hone his football Photos by Walt Middleton/ courtesy of Ohio University
Last week Skyler Allen became the latest Hanover County football player to enter the NFL ranks as he was picked up a priority free agent by the Detroit Lions. Allen played his freshman season at Atlee High School before transferring to FUMA.

skills, Allen transferred to Fork Union Military Academy to begin his sophomore year. Over the next three seasons, Allen played every position on the offensive line and was rewarded by being named an All-State and All-Prep player for each of his remaining years of high school. It was then off to Ohio University where the initial plans to red-shirt Allen was probably the most ill-conceived play the Bobcats made over his college career. “They kind of wasted my redshirt year,” Allen said. As the second-string center behind a fifth-year senior, Ohio burned Allen’s redshirt by using him for mere 17 snaps over the course of the season. “I could have been a four-year starter and instead I was a three-year starter.” Still, Allen made the most of the opportunity presented him. Over the next three years, Allen became a stalwart of the offen-
sive line grading out at 1.83 or higher each season. As a sophomore Allen played 58 snaps and finished with 42 pancake blocks. During his junior season he made 13 starts, was involved in 797 plays and helped the Bobcats rush for over 200 yards in nine games. This past fall, Allen was involved in a team-high 852 snaps as part of an Ohio offense that produced 1,633 points. He finished the year grading out
at 1.92 with 77 pancake blocks and 77 knockdowns. “I feel like I had a good career,” Allen said. “I wish I could have had another year…I don’t regret it (but) there are a lot of times that I’m like, I wish I could have because a lot of my friends are the year under me because they got redshirted.” Still, Ohio made historic accomplishments with Allen under center. “We had our first bowl win two years ago and we got our second bowl win this year,” he said. “I never had a losing season.” Yet, Allen and Ohio made program history and shook the college football world in their 2013 season opener by knocking off traditional powerhouse Penn State 24-14 in Happy Valley. “The stadium is huge, the fans are crazy and especially being the first game back after a huge ordeal, the whole (Jerry) see ALLEN, pg. 39 `

ing the innings pitched record that stood for 47 years. However, with so much on the line, R-MC could not put it all together against Wesley. The Yellow Jackets (23-17-
1) recorded eight hits in the game but failed to get a runner past second base. “We didn’t have that ‘wantto’ today that we’ve had over the past couple of weeks and you’ve got to come out and play every single day,” said R-MC head coach Ray Hedrick
R-MC displayed plenty of ‘want-to’ a week earlier, entering the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament as the #5 seed yet winning the championship. “It was a great accomplishment for our players,” Hedrick said. “They were hungry. They
played up to a level that I haven’t seen them play all year consistently over four or five days and it’s always a great feeling to win.” Carpenter agreed. “We just had tremendous energy,” he said. “Everybody from the last guy on the bench that wasn’t even dressed out to the starting pitcher was ready to go and cheering everybody on.” Outfielder Michael Trentham, a freshman out of James River, was recognized for his contributions by being named the 2013 ODAC Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. “That kid’s great,” Helbig said. “He comes out here and gives it 150 percent every time.” Helbig also reached a noteworthy mark during the weekend by picking up his fourth career tournament win as a pitcher. He will leave R-MC with the remarkable stat of having never lost facing the league’s top talent in the ODAC championships. “I’m just glad I can put my team in a position to succeed and compete in the tournament and I think that’s
just the mentality that I go in there with,” he said. “It’s just great. I can’t put it into words.” Hedrick likewise could not fully put into words Helbig’s contributions over his four years at R-MC. “He’s been pretty special to this program, very proud and very lucky to have had him,” he said. Helbig and Trentham were joined on the All-Tournament team by Weymouth, Fletcher and junior pitcher Matt Fischgrund, who picked up two wins during the championship run. Hedrick felt any one of them could have won MOP honors. “Michael ended up being the one picked out but I think we have three, four, five guys that could have competed for that award,” he said. By winning the ODAC title, R-MC guaranteed their season did not end with the loss to Wesley. The Yellow Jackets will now wait until May 12 to learn who and where they will play in the NCAA D-III Regionals which begin May 15. Therefore, each of the upper classmen felt the Senior Day loss will provide extra motiva-
tion for the team. “I think the next week and half of practice, we’ll kind of thrive off of this; kind of remember what this feeling feels like and come out here and do our work and get better for the regional tournament,” Weymouth said. Fletcher agreed. “I think this will definitely give us more motivation,” he said. “Losing on Senior Day hurts for sure. You don’t ever want to lose on your last game on your home field.” With an NCAA victory, the group of seniors will not only become the winningest class in R-MC history but also become the first Yellow Jackets squad to win a regional game. Early speculations indicate R-MC will most likely travel to Scranton, Pa. to open the NCAA tournament. Wesley............ 010 010 000 — 2 7 0 R-MC............. 000 000 000 — 0 8 1 W: Willey (2-4). I was confident going into it, and that’s what you have to have to be successful.” McIntyre finished with two hits for the Confederates. “It was a good game, it was a close game,” Davis said. “I think we should have done a little better offensively. said. “We showed that we have talent too.” That talent now has Allen among those NFL ranks himself. The selection by the Lions came as a complete surprise to Allen. Detroit first contacted him out of the blue before the third day of the draft indicating they were interested. “Before that I never heard from them, with the Pro-Day workouts or the staff workouts or anything,” he said. “I really didn’t have no idea they were interested.” But the anticipation of being drafted turned to doubt as the third day of the draft came and went without another call. Allen’s hopes were once again raised midway through
the sixth round when the Pittsburgh Steelers gave the impression Allen was the number one center on their board. The Steelers gave indications they were going to use their seventh round draft choice on him. “I was like, all right, cool,” Allen said. Pittsburgh instead went with defensive end Nicolas Williams out of Samford as their seventh round choice and Allen’s professional future was once again in doubt. In the third inning, Atlee center fielder Shelby Hill reached on an error. Two outs later, Hill scored on a double by Wilson. An Atlee error likewise led to the Confederates’ only run. With one out in the sixth inning, Kinsee Stonebraker reached on an error by Wilson. She advanced on catcher Haleigh

Sandusky trial and all,” Allen said. Major sports networks hyped the return of Penn State following the adversity, which allowed the small MAC school to pull off the monumental upset on national television. “To come back with all the ESPN and the media hype behind itto come in there and beat them was huge. “They had all of these big name players like Michael Mauti (drafted by Minnesota) and Jordan Hill (Seahawks) and these guys that are NFL bound. For a smaller school to prove that we can hang with the big guys, it’s huge,” Allen

and the girls just didn’t come through,” Earley said. “We had eight balls that we popped up to them. They weren’t laying off the rise ball and getting underneath it. We talked to them about that and they still do it. I know they get anxious. I know they want to get that game-winning hit or that extra hit or whatever, but they’ve got to learn patience. … I’d be anxious, too, if I wanted to get a game-winning hit or whatever.”

best deal- Detroit. “They were one of the first teams to call me for a priority free agency,” Allen said. “They talked to my agent and we got out a good deal.” Of all the free agent pickups made by Detroit, Allen appears hold the most secure footing going into this week’s rookie mini camp. Speaking to Detroit offensive line coach Jeremiah Washburn, Allen learned some details about current Lions center, Dominic Raiola, a 13-year veteran out of Nebraska. “He’s been a solid player and he’s getting toward the end of his career,” Allen said. “They’re trying to get a guy to mold and take over. Hopefully that’s me.” While an NFL career can
often be about fame and fortune, such as never been a part of Allen’s character, therefore the role of center suits him perfectly. “Being the center or the inside guys, you really don’t get any pub,” Allen said. “I just learned to not give two craps about it.” Still Allen understands despite national notoriety he is a role model and does what he can to help younger players achieve success. He has already made plans to speak with a group of Atlee linemen, which will most likely include recent Florida State commitment Alec Eberle. Allen said his message will pound home the points of hard work and commitment. “A guy
like me, I went so far as to leave my comfort zone, leave my hometown school Atlee and go to an all-boys, military boarding school in Fork Union, in the middle of nowhere, where I knew nobody, just so I could play college football because that’s all I wanted to do,” Allen said. However, Allen’s advice can be implemented without moving elsewhere. “If you’re willing to put in the time and the effort in the weight room and on the field and not mess around off the field and all that, it’s completely worth it.” This week Allen will prove his point when he heads northMechanicsville’s newest NFL addition as a Detroit Lion.
