Mechanicsville native Waverly Coleman is the third person from the U.S. Complete Shooting Dog Association, which started in 1981, to be honored with the award. The plaque will hang in the Hall of Fame in Grand Junction, Tennessee. The inscription the plaque reads: Carroll Waverly Coleman was born March 22, 1933 in Mechanicsville, Virginia. There’s no place for hate in our America

Statues symbolize fight to maintain slavery in South

By Melody Kinser Managing Editor It’s 11:08 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, and the memorial service for Heather Heyer is taking place. I didn’t know the young woman who lost her life in a hate-filled melee Saturday, Aug. 12, in Charlottesville, but my heart aches for her loss. What took place that fateful day when she lost her life in a cruel and intentional act has left our state and nation in pain. Heyer was part of the counter-protest movement when neo-Nazis and white supremacists marched into Charlottesville with violence on their minds. The idea of supporting ideologies that became a major part of the battles of World War II being alive and thriving today are incomprehensible.

What an insult to those who served and those who gave their lives for the freedoms we have. I do support free speech, but hate should never be part of the conversation. How can you hate someone based on color or religion? To hear white men spewing ugly comments about Jews and using the “n” word was surreal. Sadly, these hate-mongers feel empowered as if they have they have been given the green light to come out of the darkest recesses of society to share their hate. This isn’t the first time I’ve written about this topic — and I wish I could say it will be the last, but that’s doubtful. How does anyone believe they’re superior based on skin color and how do they claim to be Christians when they target God’s chosen people?

I’m heartbroken for the families of the three victims of Saturday’s violence. There’s no logic to what took place or why keeping a statue would lead to such tragedy. What happened in Charlottesville has sparked a coast to coast reaction, with Americans strongly saying that hate will not be tolerated. As Heyer’s mother prepares to address the crowd, an image of the victim’s words “If you are not outraged, you are not paying attention” crosses the screen. We also remember the families of Lt. H. Jay Cullen III and Trooper Pilot Berke M.M. Bates of the Virginia State Police who lost their lives monitoring events from the sky. Moving forward, for those of us who believe, the strength is in prayer and looking to God.

Losses in Charlottesville beyond the lives taken By Roslyn Ryan Richmond Suburban News We’ve lost a lot in the days since the Aug. 11 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville grabbed the national spotlight. Among the most notable, to be certain, was the devastating loss of three lives. As no one needs to be reminded, you can disperse an angry crowd, you can sweep up a street,

and you can fix much of the cosmetic damage left behind after events like these, but there are some things that are heartbreakingly irreparable. The losses didn’t stop there. Those who had allowed themselves to think that hate groups no longer had much support — or at least that their members would forever be forced to slink about in the shadows — lost the comfort of that notion.

We also seem to have lost the ability to peacefully, thoughtfully and productively discuss problems that involve sensitive topics or painful history. Please note: doing this is not impossible. But we now have to disabuse ourselves of the notion that we as a people are able to do it. Clearly, we’re not there yet. Add to the loss column the fact that our President — while he may be

doing a good job in a number of areas — could not manage to navigate a situation like the one in Charlottesville without igniting yet another extended imbroglio. A measure of common sense appears to have been lost somewhere along the way as well — as evidenced by the fact that some people have been calling for one of the rally parsee LOSSES, pg. 8

To those who defend statues of historical Confederate figures in Virginia and the South: These statues are symbols of the fight to maintain slavery. There was a concerted effort after the Civil War, which accelerated during the Jim Crow era, to obscure the purpose of the war and convince the public that it was a noble fight for states rights. Look at original, historical documents and you will see that the Civil War was fought to maintain slavery. The statues might have a place in a museum which presented their historical context, but have no other, legitimate, public presence (despite, what a recent letter suggested, their tourism value or who pays to maintain them). They do not represent heritage, they represent hate. I cannot imagine what it might be like to be an African American child growing up in Virginia to see these monumental images of people who fought to keep their ancestors in slavery. JM Thomas Mechanicsville

School board apathy decreases home values Why are we able to sell the homes in Hanover County we paid $50,000 years ago for $200,000 today? BlueGrace Logistics to add employees to county location RICHMOND – The Greater Richmond Partnership (“Partnership) announce last week that BlueGrace Logistics, a company providing technology networks in the freight and shipping industry, opened an office in Mechanicsville. The company, which already employs 20 local workers, plans to have up to 110 employees at its Hanover County location. “The Richmond Region is a central location on the East Coast with a good pool of talent to choose from, said Tim Salavejus, regional vice president for BlueGrace. “The state has done a lot of development and improved infrastructure. homes since the rally, there was at least a small ray of hope amid the madness: over and over, people have been coming together to denounce divisiveness and hate. Like the statues or leave them, they say, we must do better than this. For the vast majority of us, it seems, our humanity remains intact. We may have lost an awful lot, but at least we still have that.

teachers. But in recent years, a bloated Hanover County School Board full of grossly overpaid administrators from outside of Hanover County has the misguided belief that they are what make our schools great. As the Richmond TimesDispatch recently reported, top teachers are leaving the county and the profession at an accelerating pace. Poor treatment by administrators is cited as the number one reason for their job dissatisfaction, not low pay. Teachers are not treated as professionals or given autonomy in their own classrooms. They are micromanaged and

told to stick to a scripted curriculum in pursuit of higher SOL (Standards of Learning) test scores. Their authority has been stripped from them. As a result, students have no respect for teachers anymore. This treatment sends gifted teachers searching for the nearest surrounding district, private school, or to the private sector for new employment. It ain’t the “good old days” in HCPS anymore! The appointed school board has become more political than Washington, D.C., and we have seen that the new superintendent’s leadership is questionable at best. Unfortunately, it’s your home value that suffers as a result. Young families now want

their children to attend Chesterfield and Henrico schools over Hanover schools. Many friends that grew up in and now live in Hanover want to send their children to private schools because they believe HCPS has become obsessed with SOL scores and has become overrun with administrators that care more about their career advancement than children. This kind of talk was unknown in the past. It appears the appointed school board’s response to this is, “Who cares?” Who cares? Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary. She felt a calling to instill children with a passion for reading and learning, and she pursued a career in education, teaching first through fifth grades in Henrico County schools, and finally serving most of her tenure as the resourceful librarian at Mechanicsville Elementary School. Mary Austin married her true love, Dr. Louis Edward Alexander, on June 16, 1956, and together they raised two sons who kept them busy and amused. They enjoyed a long, happy marriage of 51 years until Louis’ passing in 2007. Her family will treasure memories of this life: weekends at the Rappahannock River, many a church social, family gatherings with home-cooked meals and good-natured humor, lots of music and laughter, and a mother’s wise counsel. A dedicated Christian, Mary Austin was a lifelong member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church where she was admired for her faithful commitment as the Children’s Sunday School Secretary, member of the Church Choir, director of the Young People’s Choir, and devoted member of several ministry teams. Her greatest joy was, as church historian, helping to create a History and Happenings book of the church she held dear since childhood. Proud of her Virginia heritage, Mary Austin was a member of the Hanover County Historical Society and the Scotchtown Chapter of the DAR. Mary Austin was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Dorothy Mae Dabney and Lynda Gray Tuck. She is survived by her sons, Louis Edward Alexander Jr. and William Timberlake Alexander (Suzi), her four beloved grandchildren, Stephanie Austin, Mary Kate,

Samuel Timberlake and Kali Gray, and nieces and nephews, who loved her dearly. Family and friends of Mary Austin Alexander will miss her deeply. She was charming and playful, always up for conversation and humor. They will remember fondly the twinkle in her eye that revealed her delight with life. And they rejoice knowing that she was welcomed to heaven by her beloved Louis, and a full embrace from the God she loved and served so well. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 22, 2017, at Walnut Grove Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s and Family Ministries of Walnut Grove Baptist Church, 7046 Cold Harbor Rd., Mechanicsville, VA 23111. The Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home at 8014 Lee-Davis Road was in charge of arrangements.

DAVID CONNORS David Todd Connors, whose determination to live for his wife and young children fueled his long struggle with colorectal cancer, died of the disease Aug. 13 at his Mechanicsville home. He was 39. Connors was an account executive in the Richmond office of Apex Systems, an IT staffing firm where seven of his colleagues shaved their heads in solidarity when he lost his hair from chemotherapy. CONNORS They posted photos to social media with the caption “Shave for Dave,” as Connors was often called. Throughout the 6½ years of his illness, Connors inspired many people with his positive attitude. His wife, the former Kelly McGrew, fulfilled her dream of opening a fitness studio, Pulse Barre in Mechanicsville, thanks to his encouragement and support. He took his daughter, 9-yearold Adeline, on Geocaching treasure hunt adventures and played soccer with his son, 5-year-old Matthew. He enjoyed vacations in Mexico, the Bahamas and Jamaica, often rewards for high performance in his job. At Apex, he began as a technical recruiter in 2001 and worked his way up to a principal position. He seldom called out sick as he

underwent three lung surgeries and several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation and participated in a clinical trial at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. And he continued working until his body had totally deteriorated, driven both by a love of his job and a desire to provide for his family. “He never had a pity party,” Kelly Connors said. She remembers her husband leaving chemotherapy, barely able to walk but with earbuds in to take business calls. At Hopkins, “people would look at us and try to figure out, ‘Who is the cancer patient?’ because he looked so good,” she said. Connors was born in Houston, Texas, on June 8, 1978, the younger of two brothers. He spent most of his childhood in Poquoson, on the Virginia Peninsula, where he was captain of his high school basketball team. His father, Kevin Connors, was a petty officer in the Coast Guard, now retired. His mother, Vickie Connors, was a NASA research scientist; she is now retired from NASA and works as an assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Center for Environmental Studies. The family already suffered a tragedy when Dave Connors’ brother, also Matthew Connors, died in 1996 at age 19. Connors studied business administration at the College of Charleston and transferred to James Madison University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in finance. He fell in love with his wife in 2000 during their last semester at the university, when they lived in apartments across a courtyard from one another. The couple married in 2003. Connors enjoyed fishing, hunting, and golf with his friends and family. He loved going to the beach, particularly on the Outer Banks. On Jan. 10, 2011, he visited a gastroenterologist for what he thought was see OBITUARIES, pg. 12

a minor medical issue when a tumor was detected. He struggled to regain his composure to deliver the news to his wife, in the waiting room with Adeline, then 2. He underwent chemotherapy, radiation and surgery and thought he was cured until a routine scan in November 2011 showed cancer had spread to his lungs. At that time, shortly before his son’s birth, he was told he had two to three years to live. “It has made us realize that nothing in life is guaranteed and that we should make an effort to cherish the time we have together,” he told Richmond Family Magazine in a 2015 interview. Connors was under hospice care in his final days. He promised his wife he would not die without saying goodbye, and on his last morning, he found a few moments of lucidity to grab her hand and pull her in for a kiss. He passed with her at his side. In addition to his

wife and children, Connors is survived by his parents, of King and Queen County; maternal grandmother, Margit Connelley of Jacksonville, Florida; maternal grandfather Charles “Chuck” Connelley and stepgrandmother, “Nana” Maggie of Virginia Beach; paternal grandmother, Barbara Connors of Toms River, New Jersey; mother- and fatherin-law, Sandra and Michael McGrew of Beaverdam; and brother-in-law, Brian McGrew of Orange, Connecticut. He also leaves behind two dogs and two cats. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 18, 2017, at the Shady Grove United Methodist Church at 8209 Shady Grove Road in Mechanicsville. Connors’ friends have created a fundraising campaign to support his children’s future. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to https://www.gofundme.com/ tributetodavidconnors. Graduations take toll on local football teams By Andrew Spencer for the Mechanicsville Local It has long been said that the only certain things in life are death and taxes. High school coaches would like to add a third certainty: graduating seniors. Every year, while some football teams are lucky enough to reload with key portions of their rosters intact, most high school football teams are forced to rebuild after losing players to graduation. This year is no different. Nearly every school in the area is facing a monumental rebuild, each with many new faces eager to prove their worth under the glare of the Friday night lights. They will have to prove their worth under a major realignment of the Virginia High School League’s realignment system. While the overall six-classification system implemented for all sports in 2013 remains intact – though they use different terminology, being classes rather than groups – there are now four regions within each class, and no conferences. Teams making the playoffs advance directly to regional play. Atlee and Lee-Davis will compete head-to-head in Class 5, Region B. Because of reduced enrollment, Patrick Henry, drops down a level and will join

challenge.” Still, he remains optimistic, especially on the defensive side of things. “Our offense is expected to remain consistent with previous teams we’ve had at Lee-Davis,” Turnage said. “We expect our defense to be a strength of our team since we have a great nucleus of returning starters.” With at least four starters gunning for Division I college offers, don’t be surprised to see this year’s Confederates make some noise in Class 5, Region B. Senior defensive end Jalen Hargrove is one prospect who earned all-conference and allregion honors in 2016. All-conference safety Josh Rice also returns for Lee-Davis, as do all three of last year’s starting linebacker corps. Lee-Davis hopes to continue its streak of wins against long-time rival Patrick Henry in what will be the 59th edition of the Tomato Bowl. After losing to the Patriots in a stunning upset in 2014, the Confederates have won the last two contests Nick Liberante for The Local to take an edge in the series. will have to step up – and step up quickly – in order for the Hawks to get out to a winning start. They’ll face a huge test in their first game on Friday night, when the Hawks host Monacan, which is coming off a playoff run in 2016. Whether or not this year turns out to be successful in terms of wins and losses for the Hawks will depend on how quickly the young players can grow into their roles. “We have improved every aspect of our offense,” Stoudt said, “and we are going to be very aggressive on defense.”

returns for his second year as head coach of the Raiders with a stable of potential breakout players under his direction. They will be lead by sophomore quarterback Tyler Warren, who returns to lead the offense. “Tyler is as good as they come,” Gray said of his signal caller. “He has a chance to be a very special player at a variety of positions.” In addition to Warren at quarterback, junior running back Isaac Abel will be a player to watch. “Isaac is extremely strong and explosive,” Gray said. “He is poised to have a really good year.” The Raiders finished 2016 on a sweet-and-sour note, winning their final home game over Armstrong, then losing their final game of the season in a Region 5A North playoff at Stone Bridge. That final loss gave the Raiders a losing 5-6 record last year, but it could also serve as motivation to come out this year and exceed the expectations of pundits. Gray said his offense, “has the potential to be very explosive,” but he couched that potential in the need for the offensive line to develop and come together during preseason. Defensively, Gray conceded that the Raiders have some holes, but he’s still excited about its prospects. “We have some young guys who have been working hard, are hungry, and are excited to fill the spots where we need help,” Gray said. With a potent one-two punch on offense, Atlee could be on the verge of clearing the hurdle to a winning season. Whether it does or not will depend on how well the defense answers its call. to improve on last year’s 3-8 record. Nobody is more aware Hanover of the need for improvement The Hawks are looking than head coach Derek Stoudt,

but he’s also painfully aware that it is an uphill battle as he fields a team that features six returning starters on the offen-

cern for us this season,” Stoudt said. “But we have the ability to grind it out on offense and we’re looking to be very stingy especially against the run on defense.” On offense, Hanover will be asking a lot from its young offensive line, where only tight end Michael Wilcox and left tackle Henry Waite return as starters. “They’re big but they’re also young,” Stoudt said of the two linemen. On defense, look for big plays from senior linebacker Parker Chenault, a verbal commit to the University of sive side of the ball and only Virginia, and junior tackle Justyn Haynesworth, who five on defense. “Our youth up front and the also looks to be a Division 1 lack of depth is a major con- prospect. Patrick Henry The Patriots are also looking to replace a majority of last year’s starters, with seven offensive and eight defensive players lost to graduation from the 2016 squad that finished the season 8-4. Adding to the turnover is new coach Keith Braxton. Former head coach Bryan Davis will be a tough act to follow. Davis departed Patrick Henry after going 18-15 in three seasons, including two appearances in the VHSL Group 5A Playoffs. Davis left Patriot fans with two big memories: a road upset of heavily favored LeeDavis the 2014 Tomato Bowl and Patrick Henry’s first playoff victory in 15 years with a 53-28 win over Briar Woods in the first round of the Region 5A North playoffs last year. Braxton, a Patriot alum, will try to build some new Patrick Henry memories of his own, and he’ll have experienced offensive with which to do it. Senior signal caller Hunter Hart has the leadership ability and experience to keep the offense on track, especially with Wake Forest commit Kaleb Smith, another senior, back at wide receiver and junior Za’Quari Tillman at running back. Defensively, the Patriots will rely on their secondary

Rathbone, Ailor pace Patrick Henry to golf win By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MANQUIN – Patrick Henry’s Jessica Rathbone could hit pretty well in her freshman season on the Patriots’ golf team last year. She gained distance off the tee over the past year, and that extra distance parlayed itself into a five-stroke victory for herself and a 15-stroke victory for the Patriots in a trimatch against Hanover and host Lee-Davis at Queenfield Golf Club on Aug. 14. Patrick Henry ran away with the day, shooting a collective 163. Hanover was second with a score of 178 and Lee-Davis third with 193. Rathbone and teammate Rory Ailor – both of whom have had a busy off-season on the golf course – dominated the field. Rathbone shot a 3under-par 33 on Queenfield’s front nine, beating Ailor by five strokes to claim medalist honors on the day. Patrick Henry head coach Dave Hudak said Rathbone is hitting about 40 yards longer off the tee than last year. Given

ter than the third-place scorer, Lee-Davis’ Austin Brown (43). Carter Mallory and Miles Krishnamurthy rounded out the Patriots’ top four with a 45 and 47, respectively. Hanover’s top four were remarkably consistent as a team. Jack Proctor and Robert Patina tied at 44 strokes apiece, while Christian Dyer and Andrew Wilkinson tied at 45 strokes apiece. In addition to Brown’s 43, the Confederates were led by David Fleischer’s 48, Tanner Mahoney’s 49, and Landon Watkins’ 53. Lee-Davis head coach Tyler Johnson expects the Confederate team – loaded with multi-sport athletes – will get improve as they get more matches under their collective belts. The Queenfield match was their first scheduled competition of the season after only four days of practice the previous week. It was also the Patriots’ first Nick Liberante for The Local match of the season – though Patrick Henry’s Jessica Rathbone uses an iron on her approach to the second hole at Queenfield Golf Club on Nov. 14. not their first scheduled match. for stability and leadership, as the front seven are much more inexperienced. King William The King William Cavaliers are climbing up a steep hill as the 2017 season begins with fifth-year head coach Dylan DeHart looking to replace six offensive starters and eight defensive starters from last year’s 7-4 team. “The majority of skill players starting on offense are sophomores,” said DeHart, “We’ll be switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4

scheme on defense. Our inexperience and lack of depth will be a definite obstacle this year, but not one that I don’t think we can overcome.” Much of DeHart’s optimism stems from the fact that despite their youth, many of his skill players already show incredible talent, and the team has been enthusiastic through early-season practices. Look for two-way starter Tommy Rife to make his share of headline-grabbing plays as the junior looks to impress college scouts with his explosiveness and strength. On offense, DeHart is looking to lean on his experienced offensive line. Putting that group together with a solid

group of skilled position players, he says that these Cavaliers have the potential to have great success. DeHart is also looking for defensive success, but said that it’ll come down to how aggressive his players go after opposing ball carriers. “The kids are talented enough to play solid defense,” he said. “The key is aggression.” Since most of the area teams are rebuilding the teams that mature and gel the quickest will be the ones finishing ahead at season’s end. Only time will tell which teams do so. Andrew Spencer can be reached at sports@mechlocal. com.

Partnership made $823.6 million economic impact RICHMOND – The Greater Richmond Partnership (“Partnership”), the Richmond Region’s economic development group, recently announced that its efforts resulted in $823.6 million in wealth creation for the area during the 2014-2017 fiscal years. The announcement occurred at the organization’s 23rd Annual Meeting, which was hosted at the University of Richmond’s School of Business on Wednesday, Aug. 9. “Increasing the amount of jobs in the region is the single-most impactful undertaking that our organization can do to improve the wealth in our community,” said Barry Matherly, CEO and president of the Partnership. “What we’ve learned through economic modeling is that direct traded jobs create company supplier positions, which spawns consumer jobs that include retail and food service. It’s an effect that ripples across multiple years and we build on those accomplishments every year moving forward.” During the evening event, the regional organization unveiled its results for the 2016-2017 fiscal year, which included supporting the creation of more than 1,500 direct new jobs and $162.2 million in new capital investment. Through collaborative efforts of the GRP’s partners and allies, the business attraction program successfully assisted 16 new and expanded companies, including Niagara Bottling Co., CoStar Group, and Owens & Minor. The 2017-2018 fiscal year kicks off a new five-year goals cycle for the organization which started on July 1.
