OPINION | The Local Views From the managing editor
Congratulations to all the 2018 graduates! By Melody Kinser Managing Editor Today we wrap up our four-week series on the honor graduates for Hanover County Public Schools. Their stories are always a favorite to write and learn about the plans these young adults have for their futures. It is so impressive to look over the accomplishments and involvements of the honor graduates (valedictorian and salutatorian). Their extraordinary commitment to their education and community is incredible. On Saturday, members of the Class of 2018 from Atlee, Lee-Davis, Hanover and Patrick
Henry high schools will be taking part in commencement ceremonies at 8:30 a.m., noon, 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, at the E.J. Wade Arena at the VCU Stuart Siegel Center, located at 1200 W. Broad St. in Richmond. As always, we will have complete coverage in our June 20 edition. We are always excited to share the special day with you. A special thank you to Chris Whitley, HCPS public information officer, who coordinates with school counselors in getting the information and photos about the division’s honor graduates. We also extend our most sincere congratu-
lations to those seniors graduating from private schools, as well as those who are homeschooled. Our wish is for success on life’s path.
And thanks to Joel Klein, the newest member of our freelance pool of photojournalists, for getting photos of the commencement ceremonies.
Congratulations to R-MC Randolph-Macon College’s Class of 2018 set a record with over 340 graduates. The Ashland campus was abuzz with all the energy of an amazing day filled with the joy of preparing for life’s next chapter. Thank you to Anne Marie Lauranzon, R-MC’s director of marketing and communications, for helping make our coverage a smooth process.
We all love strawberries! The Ashland Strawberry Faire will fill the streets of R-MC from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, featuring vendors, entertainment and, of course, strawberries! Yum! We’re taking part this year and hope to see you there. Stop by our booth -- 109 -- to say “Hi.” We’re looking forward to being a part of this Ashland tradition.
With twins, a dad can experience a double dose of goose bumps By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist It’s an exciting time of year as parents prepare for a milestone in their children’s lives that transforms them into young adults and begins a new cycle of young adultism. Yes, I’m talking graduation and the change it represents for children who once seemed like helpless babies unable to care for themselves and now appear on the verge of adulthood. It’s always a special day when a parent can enjoy that pride and accomplishment that can only hap-
pen when your child’d name is called, and someone you’ve loved since their first breath walks across the stage and accepts their first real symbol of things accomplished, a diploma. We’re not quite there at my house, but, when Jack and Emma graduate later this month, it’s a sure sign that my kids are growing up. It’s also an opportune time to take stock of the past years, and to sit back and sigh a brief hint of relief at their successes. Ever since they were born, I’ve marveled at the mystique that is only evident in the relationship between twins.

They search for each other in a crowd, and it’s the first face they seek when entering a room, a sort of telepathic connection that defies explanation. My mother would say they are like two peas in a pod, but their common tendencies don’t outweigh their differences, and each has a unique and distinct personality. But, that twin attachment is always there, even with the unique personalities. When Jack began his journey at Tuckahoe Middle School three years ago, no one could predict what lay ahead. He began his middle school
years with limited mobility, but still able to walk for short distances and move around at will, albeit with difficulty. His middle school years have been marked with numerous challenges, and he is now confined to a wheelchair all the time. Steps now come at a great premium, and Jack’s life is more challenging, his daily grind more complicated and burdened. And through it all, Emma has remained the constant, his partner, support system, caregiver extraordinaire and best friend. When Jack has endured the cruelest of insults, the most deliber-

ately vicious comments regarding his condition, Emma shed the tears. And when someone offends or abuses Jack, they quickly find an awakened sleeping giant in the form of his twin, always ready to defend, promote or protect her sibling. So, their graduation means much more than just the sense of accomplishment any parent enjoys as their children learn, grow and succeed. It’s a symbol of persistence, personal sacrifice and a bond between brother and sister that makes me proud to be called their father. Few will realize in that moment of joy the true sacrifices made by my twins in their years at Tuckahoe, and I suppose the obstacles are less important as we enjoy their accomplishments. But, the dedication of a sister to her brother won’t be lost on the ones who love and respect Jack’s courage and determination for they know the role Emma plays in his life each day. And as the journey continues, it gives me a certain sense of assurance that Jack will be OK as long as Emma is not far from his side, and Emma will be fine as long as Jack has her back.

Council OKs Rain or shine: It’s budget and Faire time in town legacy projects By Lorie Foley Ashland Strawberry Faire
By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND -- Ashland Town Council unanimously approved a FY2018-2019 budget that includes funding for two legacy projects, a new Ashland Town Hall and the pool at the Tuesday, June 5, regular meeting. The $24.5 million budget includes a $10.5 million general fund allocation in addition to $14 million in capital project funding. Town Manager Joshua Farrar said the more than 8 percent increase is not so substantial when other portions of the spending plan are examined. “That does seem like a substantial increase, but we must remember the majority of that increase is based on the new debt service payment that we have to make for two very large projects: the town hall project and the pool,” Farrar said. The budget contains a $1.1 million transfer from the reserve fund, but $750,000 is slated for a “one-time paydown” on the newly acquired debt for construction costs on those two projects. “Think of it as if you were buying a home or a car and putting more money down,” Farrar said. The approved budget also contains several tax rate increases, a one-cent addition to the real estate tax, a 1 percent increase in the meals tax and a 1 percent increase in lodging.
The new budget also contains relief for many business owners who now pay the Business Professional Occupancy License (BPOL). Currently, owners of businesses with more than $100,000 pay the fee. The amended policy now allows business owners up to $1 million before the tax is levied, making it the highest threshold in the state and lowest BPOL rate in the region. There are no new positions outlined in the budget, and benefits remain the same. Farrar said this year’s fourmonth budget discussions were dominated by two major subjects. “The two large capital projects are what drove the majority of our decision-making this year,” Farrar said. “I think we have put up a great and conservative plan to accomplish those, leaving us in a better position than we were this year next year when it comes to creating the FY 2019-2020 budget. We did not present you with easy choices this year.” Mayor Jim Foley described the budget as transformational. In other matters, Kim Hynes, executive director of Central Virginia Waste Management Association, presented council with an update on trash collection and recycling services in the town. Hynes outlined a slight increase in the trash collection see COUNCIL, pg. 16

fee, about 50 cents per household, and signaled future concerns regarding recycling. The town provides residents both services at no cost. CVWMA serves 13 localities and depends on private companies to collect trash and recycling. In recent months, China has greatly restricted the amount and type of recyclables it accepts from the United States, causing the value of mixed paper to nothing. With virtually no return on more than 60 percent of recyclables, those private providers
are turning to CVWMA for assistance. A $20 per ton rebate to the agency’s customers has been suspended, and officials are attempting to educate the public on providing more “clean” recycling. For example, the elimination of plastic bags is just one of those goals. It all adds up to uncertainty in the recycling world, according to Hynes. Foley asked if this might mean a return to the days of separated recycling at the curb. Hynes said technology might provide a better solution, longterm. A storm on May 27 left Public Works crews busy,

devoting more than 85 manhours to clean up. Recent drainage improvements in the downtown area prevented even more flooding, according to Foley. The only substantial damage occurred to an underground culvert located near Hill Carter Parkway. Portions (lanes) of that road have been closed due to the damage, and town officials wasted no time in authorizing work to begin on those repairs. The cost of the repair would normally require an approval from town council, but those figures were not available at meeting time, but Farrar stressed the importance

of getting the work started as soon as possible. “In the interest of our community and public safety, I don’t want to wait until June 19 (next scheduled meeting),” Farrar said. “That’s why we are having this conversation tonight. We’re not going to have all the details we want, but we are going to ask for your blessing to move forward and we will bring you back a budget (for the project) on the 19th.” The repairs should take from three to six weeks to complete and will require some road closures that will be announced on the town’s website. 8 PM

Hanover girls repeat as tennis champions Hawk boys finish second in state
Hanover’s Dragum steps down
By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor
By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch
SALEM – The members of Hanover’s girls tennis team had targets on their backs all season. As defending Group 4 state champions, the Hawks were the team to beat for those hoping to dethrone them as the reigning queens of the newly configured Class 4. Saturday at Salem Civic Center, John Handley did it best, but its best wasn’t enough as the Hanover girls won their second straight state title with a 5-2 victory over the Judges. The Hawk boys ended an historic season for their team with a trio of second-place finishes – in the Class 2 singles Thursday, the Class 2 doubles Wednesday, and as runners-up for the Class 4 team championship Saturday. Hanover head girls tennis coach Lindsey Hein said the Hawk girls did a great job of handling the pressure. “At the beginning of the season, I said, ‘Girls, you’re going to have a big red circle on your back. Everybody’s going to be
Since Hanover High School opened in 2004, there has been one baseball coach there – Charlie Dragum. The program will embark on a new era, as Dragum has announces his retirement. Dragum assembled a hall of fame-caliber resume, winning state championships in 2013, 2014 and 2016 and finishing runner-up in 2009 and 2017. Dragum owned a career-record of 328101 and guided perhaps the Richmond area’s best baseball program the past decade. But it’s time for someone younger to take over, said Dragum, 50. His son, Jack, is graduating and will play for the University of Virginia next year. Charlie also hopes to grow his throwing program,

gunning for you, every county school especially,’ ” Hein said. “They handled it with an amazing amount of poise.” Junior Madison Moore and freshman Raine Weis each got a pair of wins for the Hawks, both in their singles’ efforts, but also as members of the Hawks’ No. 1
doubles team – whose 6-1, 6-3 win over John Handley’s No. 1 doubles team of Meredith Watts and Lillian Smith clinched the championship match in Hanover’s favor. In singles play, Moore defeated Watts 6-1, 7-5 in the No. 1 singles and Weis defeated
Smith 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles matches. Other Hanover winners included seniors – and twin sisters – Brooke and Morgan Kazelskis. Brooke Kazelskis beat Meredith Larsen 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 5 singles match and Morgan Kazelskis defeated
Catherine Love 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 6 match. Hein praised the work of her seniors, which included Mattie Moon, who fell to John Handley’s Ava Lewis 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 3 singles match. But see TENNIS, pg. 21

Royals rain on Confederates’ state title hopes park. But Prince George right fielder Erin Miles’ eyes never left the ball, and she began to chase it down. With no warning track to caution her of the fence, Miles reached for the ball, caught it and promptly ran face first into the fence. “That’s one of the best catches I’ve seen her make,” Chandler said. “It was an incredible catch. To go full out into the fence, and not worry about anything, that is incredible.”
By McKenzie Terrell Richmond Times-Dispatch and Dave Lawrence Sports Editor GLEN ALLEN – In a game that was scoreless through six innings, Prince George softball scored four times in the top of the seventh to beat Lee-Davis 4-0 Friday morning in the Class 5 state softball semifinals at Glen Allen. Heading into the seventh inning, tensions were high on the field. With no runs scored and only one inning left in regulation, both the Royals and the Confederates knew they needed hits. Prince George coach Nealan Chandler said he told his team that, in order to win, it needed to “execute.” “I said, ‘Look, we’ve had a lot of chances. We’ve had runners on base, we’ve had a couple of baserunning mistakes, but we’re right there,’ ” Chandler said. Kyla Nase took her coach’s words seriously, and knocked a single down the third-base line. With Nase on first, Haley Godfrey stepped up to the plate for her third at-bat. Godfrey came out swinging, and sent a ball into deep right field for a double. Now, with runners on second and third with one out, Madison Quesenberry told her coach she had an idea. “I had a senior look at me, and she wanted to squeeze bunt right there,” Chandler said. Quesenberry’s idea turned out to be a good one, as she landed on first and Nase was able to beat the throw home. “That’s an incredible thing to execute that perfectly when everybody knew it was coming,” Chandler said. With the score 1-0, pitcher and leadoff hitter Laura Thompson came up to bat.

Henley win’s pitchers’ duel MECHANICSVILLE – The two pitchers at the controls of the Virginia High School League Group 5 quarterfinal between Kempsville and host Lee-Davis Tuesday night were less than generous to their opposing hitters: the Chiefs’ Alexis Robinson allowed just seven baserunners and the Confederates’ Savanah Henley allowed just six. But Robinson gave up the big hit of the day – a two run home run to Jesse Gentry in the second inning – while Henley pitched herself out of a jam in the sixth inning to hold a potentially tying run at third as LeeDavis held on for a 2-1 victory. The Confederates advance to the state semifinal in a rematch with Prince George – a 4-0 winner over Kecoughtan – Friday at 10 a.m. at Glen Allen High School. The winner of that game will advance to the state championship game Saturday at 10 a.m. at Glen Allen. Lee-Davis head softball coach Jackie Davis said Kempsville played well. “They did a nice job. They got a couple of runners on base,” she said. “But Savanah stayed solid on the mound and she was able to pitch through it and produce outs. Panthers thwart Cavaliers’ title hopes again By Jim Sacco Daily News-Record BLACKSBURG – King William softball coach Elizabeth Welshonce called it a season of adversity. It ended when the Cavaliers couldn’t overcome an opposing pitcher. “We just didn’t hit,” Welshonce said. “We’ve seen some good pitching, but she’s easily one of the better ones we’ve seen.” “She” was Page County junior Sabrina Foltz, who spun a four-hit gem and kept all but two King William baserunners out of scoring position as the Cavaliers’ season came to an end with a 4-0 loss in Friday’s Class 2 softball state semifinal at Virginia Tech. “We lost three seniors throughout the season,” Welshonce said. And those departures led to two freshman in the Cavaliers’ starting lineup against the Panthers (23-3) — Jordan
Mitchell and Kristen Dungee — with a third, Kayley Mitchell, on the bench. “Went from playing JV to pulling them up and playing on varsity,” Welshonce said. Against Foltz, the Cavaliers only produced four singles and the Page County ace helped herself by driving in the only run she needed. “I’m feeling so many emotions right now,” Foltz said. “I’m so excited, I can’t wait.” The Panthers only had to wait until Saturday for a chance to win their first state championship since taking back-toback crowns in 2014 and 2015. They defeated Richlands 3-0 in the title game at Radford. After a 1-2-3 first time at the plate, Page County freshman Tana Merica touched King William pitcher Jenna Evans with a second-inning, two-out double to the wall in center. “It’s all we needed at the time,” Foltz said. So she took advantage. On a 1-2 count, Foltz helped
out to pack its bags. Sitting with her team along the third-base line after the loss, Welshonce said she let the team know the future was bright after an emotional campaign that ended further than she imagined after the departures and untested youth thrust into the lineup. “They just rose above everything that’s gone on,” she said. “I couldn’t be happier as far as we made it. We set the table for next year.”

her own cause when she roped a fastball back up the middle to plate Merica and give Page County a 1-0 lead. The run did little to calm Foltz’s nerves. Adding single runs in the third, fifth and sixth did the trick, however. “I was so nervous coming
into this game,” Foltz said. “And just to have all those extra runs, it just, all my nerves disappeared and I could just play the game I love.” The cushion run came in the third with freshman Maddie Gordon’s triple to the gap in right-center and Brooklynn

Group AAA state championship in 1997. He became the head coach at Atlee and stayed three years before leaving for the newly opened Hanover High School. The school’s first athletics director was Bob Stratton – a recent inductee to the Virginia High School League hall of fame – and he made sure the team had the right equipment and a good field. “He gave us a huge start in being successful,” Dragum said. It didn’t take the team long to be successful. The Hawks played their first season in 2004 and won the Central Region title in 2005. There were no seniors on the first team, so by 2005, the squad was an experienced and well bonded team.
Dragum remembers them for their talent, work ethic and toughness. Third baseman Patrick Long batted .545 and was named AllMetro. So was outfielder Aaron Berg, who hit .432. “They were so invested in Hanover baseball, they gave [the program] legs,” Dragum said. “That was huge for the identity of the program.” Hanover won its first state title in 2013 – the last year of Group AAA – with Andrew Knizner, 2013 All-Metro player of the year Keith Searles and 2014 All-Metro player of the year Derek Casey. Knizner now plays Triple-A in the Cardinals’ organization, and Casey was drafted by the Cubs this week from the University of Virginia.

Hanover was slotted for 4A after realignment, and the Hawks became mainstays in the state tournament, reaching it every year from 2014-2017. Dragum also credits his assistants, including Bobby White, Hunter Hoy, Tyler Kane and A.J. Karidis, some of whom have been on the program for nearly a decade. He’s had a group text message with them that’s been maintained on his phone for six or seven years. The assistants brought new ideas and kept the program fresh. Atlee lacrosse finds heartbreak again in states close-range stops that kept the Raiders from gaining momentum. Reaghan Kolb had two goals for Atlee. Morgan Koeneke, setting up Maier, had five assists for Freedom. Atlee has only three seniors — Faith Anna, Kellyn McGlamery and Emily Karn — but all are key players. “I don’t believe that this is the end of us coming back,” Miller said. “I think that we will be here next year and for years to come. I think that we want it so bad, and we have so many great girls and a great coach, that I think we’ll be back soon. I have no doubt.”
By Tim Pearrell and Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch GLEN ALLEN – The Richmond area keeps getting tantalizingly close to a Virginia High School League lacrosse title, but the breakthrough will have to wait another year. Atlee’s girls lost 9-8 to Freedom-South Riding (Loudoun) in a back-and-forth game that featured some stellar goaltending in the Class 5 championship game at Deep Run on Saturday. Freedom got the decisive goal from Rachael Bean with 2:10 to play with the Raiders two players down. Freedom (19-4), the Region C runner-up, got possession of the draw and ran out the clock, ending Atlee’s bid for an unbeaten season (15-1) and the area’s first boys or girls VHSL title since the league instituted lacrosse championships in 2006. Atlee’s boys had experienced a similar heartache, losing in the 5A state final in 2015, 2016 and 2017, all by a goal. “[Winning championships] kind of comes from experience and leadership, people who have been there before,” said Atlee coach Christina Dobson, whose team was in its first state championship game. “We had an excellent season, but were we totally really mentally, emotionally, for this game? Maybe not. That’s something next year we’ll have to build on, this experience. It makes me kind of hopeful for the future of our program that now they have this to build on.” Atlee, the Region B champ, rolled through its regular-season schedule but didn’t play a team outside the area until the state playoffs. Its closest game was a 12-6 victory over Deep Run. Not really being tested and

goals from Freedom sophomore Emily Maier. Down 3-1 early, Atlee had a 5-4 lead when Freedom’s Emily Lichtenberg tied the game 6 seconds before halftime. Neither team could pull ahead by more than a goal in the second half as goalkeepers Stella Harrison of Atlee and Araya McNeal came up with big saves. McNeal made several
Briar Woods ends boys season MECHANICSVILLE – For the past three seasons, the Atlee boys lacrosse team has reached the Class 5 state championship and come oh so close to winning it all. In each of the past three years, they’ve lost the state final game by one point. This year, they won’t be back in the championship game. Atlee lost 8-7 to visiting Briar Woods (Loudoun County), the same team that defeated Atlee in the 2016 championship game in a Class 5 semifinal at Atlee on June 5. The score was tied at 5 after three quarters. Briar Woods opened up the fourth with three consecutive goals two and a half minutes apart. Atlee scored twice in the final minutes to cut the lead to 8-7, but it wasn’t enough. Andrew Cook scored four goals for the Raiders. Drew Miller, Aidan Shields and Walker Everhart had one each. Daniel McMinn, Aaron Casteel and Ethan Ro had two goals each for Briar Woods. Tim Pearrell can be reached at tpearrell@timesdispatch.com. Eric Kolenich can be reached at ekolenich@timesdispatch.com.
Hawks fall in rematch with Courtland By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor SALEM – For the first 67 minutes of their VHSL Class 4 girls soccer quarterfinal, both Hanover and Courtland had their shots, but their respective goalkeepers, Tallulah Miller for the Hawks and Olivia Haynes for the Cougars, blocked every attempt to score. In the 68th minute, Miller blocked a shot by Courtland’s Megan McDermott, but she couldn’t reposition in time to block the shot off the rebound by Katelyn Ignudo, and – after 11 minutes of frustration – the Hawks saw their season end in a 1-0 loss at Salem High School. The two teams went 1-1-1 against each other this season, with Hanover (17-2-1) winning the second time they met with a pair of late goals in the final minutes in the Region 4B final. In the state final, however, the Cougars (16-2-1) displayed more speed – especially on the outside – and used that speed to interrupt

pionship Saturday at 10 a.m. at Roanoke College. It was a painful end for a historic Hawks’ run – the first time a Hanover girls team had qualified for a state tournament, much less reach a state semifinal. Tavares was proud of what his team had accomplished – both in the run up to the semi-
final and in the game itself. “They gave everything that they had,” he said. “They walked off that field, and they know that they left everything on the field. They did the best they possibly could. “I’ve said it all year long, I trust these girls with my life. They’re unbelievable. I’m just sorry I couldn’t deliver a final.”

Jessica Pittman opened the inning with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. One out and one walk later, Pittman scored on a groundout by Hadley Valera. Kempsville threatened again in the sixth. Pittman again opened the inning with a hit – this time a single – was sacrificed to second by Haleigh Settle, and advanced to third on a passed ball. Valera walked to put runners at the corners. It was time for a timeout, and Davis approached the mound. “I just told [Henley] to relax and that that didn’t hurt us and that she had pitched really well to the girl that was coming up – just to know that she had dominated her the first two at-bats,” Davis said. “She just

Engagement ring buyers guide
W
hile couples remember the sentiments and the style of their engagements forever, the engagement ring serves as the lasting symbol of that momentous occasion. Choosing the right engagement ring is complicated. Such a decision involves knowing what a future spouse desires in a ring and balancing those desires with budget. Shopping for an engagement ring can be both nervewracking and exciting. But there are ways to make the process go as smoothly as possible.
Listen carefully anytime jewelry is discussed Getting an idea of which style of jewelry the love of your life prefers requires keeping your eyes and ears open anytime jewelry is mentioned. Subtle hints may be dropped and pages to magazines may be folded back to provide a nudge in the right direction.
It’s also perfectly fine to ask for your future spouse’s input, particularly if you’ve already spoken about marriage and know that an engagement is on the horizon.
Have a good idea on the shape of the stone All gemstones need to be cut in particular ways so that they reflect light and sparkle. Stones are also cut in specific shapes that provide the overall form of the stone. These include round, princess, emerald, oval, marquise, and pear, among others. Many people have distinct preferences when it comes to the shape of the ring. Keep in mind that some shapes are more common than others and some may be more expensive as well. According to Long’s Fine Jewelers, round cut diamonds are the most popular today and also some of the most expensive. Marquise and oval also tend to be pricey. Princess and emerald cut diamonds may be more affordable, offers Genesis Diamonds.

When choosing an engagement ring the four Cs to consider are the stone’s cut, carat, clarity, and color.
Know all the specs Buying an engagement ring means being armed with a lot of knowledge. In addition to shape, there are the four Cs to consider. These refer to the stone’s cut, carat, clarity, and color, and will determine the financial value of the gemstone. Take some time to learn about each of the four
Cs so you can make a more informed decision when visiting the jeweler.
Shop around Not all jewelers are the same, and you want to find one with whom you feel comfortable and believe you will get the best value for your money. Believe it or not, you
can purchase the ring in two parts --opting to shop for a setting from one place and a stone from another. Jewelers will often do whatever is necessary to make their customers happy, so don’t be afraid to ask for customization. Engagement ring buyers may also want to consider gemstones other than dia-
monds. Buyers also must know their beloved’s ring size before buying the ring. Brilliant Earth jewelry says 6 to 6.5 are the most common ring sizes. When shoppers are prepared, the engagement ringbuying process is that much easier. - Metro Creative

P
arents have long relied on coupons to help them reduce the cost of raising their families. While it might once have been necessary to scan grocery store circulars and break out the scissors to take advantage of store discounts, more and more consumers are now turning to digital coupons offered via their mobile devices to save money. According to eMarketer, a firm that covers digital marketing, media and commerce, the number of adults who redeem coupons via their mobile devices is expected to rise to roughly 104 million people by 2016. That’s a significant uptick from the number of digital couponers in 2014, when a little more than 78.5 million adults took advantage of digital coupons offered via their mobile devices. The growing popularity of mobile coupons has sparked increased interest among marketers, as eMarketer projects that 44.5 percent of marketers will offer mobile coupons in 2016, compared to just 36.5 percent in 2014. Families looking to save money on their next shopping trip would be wise to take their mobile devices along with them. - Metro Creative

Ashland Strawberry Faire Guide June 13, 2018
ASHLAND – The Ashland Strawberry Faire is celebrating its 37th year this summer. One of the most beloved traditions is the Miss Strawberry and Mister Strawberry Pageant. The Strawberry Pageant is a free, non-competitive pageant. Winners are selected as their names are drawn from a strawberry basket. The Pageant takes place on Blackwell Stage, which is sponsored this year by Railside Law Group and the Town of Ashland. Kids as young as 3 years old can sign up to participate, and are grouped by age categories. Michelle Henry is returning as the coordinator for the Strawberry Pageant, a job she covets. “Watching the kids walk forward as their names are called is too precious,” Henry said. Special guest “Miss Historic Hanover” Hallie Hovey-Murray is planning to assist with the festivities. Ms. Hovey-Murray will be representing Hanover at the Miss Virginia competition in late June. Strawberries and music — what a beautiful thing! By Lorie Foley Ashland Strawberry Faire
A
SHLAND – Each year, the Ashland Strawberry Faire showcases an abundant amount of musical talent on the Blackwell Stage. Kevin Damian, the Faire’s music coordinator, has been booking bands for the Faire since 2010. “The stage schedule books up really quickly. We have bands from all over contacting us now to play for the Faire,” Damian says proudly. This year, the Faire is excited to see one of Hanover County’s own join the impressive list of bands playing on stage. Alex Roberson, a 2011 Patrick Henry High School graduate, is playing with his band, Honest Debts. “I am the only Patrick Henry alum, but three of the four are Richmond natives … (drummer Blake Hurt and guitarist Matt Elgin), and we all live here now,” Roberson said. Honest Debts is a four-piece blues rock ’n’ roll with diverse musical backgrounds. They mold
elements of funk, rock, blues, and classic soul into a sound that's all their own. The band is influenced by artists such as John Mayer, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Allman Brothers Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Dawes. The resulting songs are classic, fresh and exciting. PumpHouse, another band based in Richmond, is excited to share its soulful originals on the Blackwell Stage. The six-member band puts a creative spin on traditional blues and rock, and they deliver an engaging foot pumping groove. The Hanover Concert Band, also known as “the musical ambassadors for Hanover County,” regularly performs at Ashland’s 4th of July Parade, the Hanover Tomato Festival, Ashland Train Day and other county events. Started in 1989, the 40-member band is under the direction of Karla Bloom and rehearses at the Hanover Arts & Activities Center. Recently crowned Hanover Idols, Jason Call and Madison Cox, are slated to perform on stage after the Hanover Concert Band. By day, Jason Call is a certified hand therapist and by night, he
leads his own band, the Jason E. Call Band. Jason also is an avid scuba diver and a marathon runner. Madison Cox is 15 years old and a rising star on stage. She is currently rehearsing for the lead
role in “Mary Poppins” for the Center Players. The show goes up in June at the Hanover Tavern. Two more bands, Counter Point and Main Line also are scheduled to perform.

Ashland Strawberry Faire
Faire committee forms new partnership with Ashland Kiwanis By Lorie Foley Ashland Strawberry Faire
A
SHLAND– The Ashland Strawberry Faire’s Board of Directors is excited to announce a new partnership with the Ashland Kiwanis Club. Both groups are long-standing Ashland organizations with a history of service to the community. Approximately a year ago, members of the Ashland Kiwanis Club approached the Board of Directors of the Ashland Strawberry Faire expressing an interest in partnering with the Board to help host the annual Faire. “When we met to discuss Faire operations and expectations, they didn’t run away,” laughed Dani Stockwell, the Faire’s Treasurer. “It is a monumental undertaking to put on the Ashland Strawberry Faire, which is staffed primarily by volunteers,” said Sharon Chidsey, Board President. Chidsey has been volunteering with the Faire since about 2011. Prior to
that, she was actually a vendor at the Faire and that helps her keep things in perspective for both the volunteers and the vendors. She readily admits she still has lots to learn from the many dedicated volunteers who have worked tirelessly for many years. In fact, one Board member, Betty LaPlace, has served as a volunteer since the beginning of the Faire in 1982. What started that year as a small festival held on the football field at Randolph-Macon College has grown significantly. Betty LaPlace, Dick Gillis, and Ken Gustufson, owner of the Ashland Berry Farm, initially gathered all the local arts, crafts, and nonprofit groups they could to participate in the inaugural event. Today the Faire still gathers the community, hosting more than 300 arts, crafts, business, and food vendors, offering special events, pageants, and musical performances which attract as many as 40,000 visitors. The Faire committee starts preparing for the next Faire

The Ashland Strawberry Faire committee is proud to announce that the Faire donated $3,000 to the Ashland Kiwanis Club for their efforts, earmarked to their upcoming playground improvements to Pufferbelly Park in Ashland. From left to right: Dani Stockwell and Sharon Chidsey (Treasurer and President of the Ashland Strawberry Faire, respectively) and PJ Edmonds (President of the Ashland Kiwanis Club). More fun for kids!
each September, which gives the group about 10 months to get organized. The Board regularly evaluates past successes and potential improvements.
Each month, they focus on a particular aspect of the Faire, including budget, policies, vendor regulations, grants, sponsorships, printed materials, and
public safety. The Faire gives back to the community by awarding ten local scholarships each year. “In 2017, the Board offered $6,000 in scholarship funds to graduating seniors from Hanover County Public Schools, and one in honor of former Mayor Dick Gillis, to a RandolphMacon College student majoring in political science” said Betty LaPlace, Director of Scholarships. A big part of the goal of the Faire is to support our many community nonprofits. Nonprofit organizations are offered free booth spaces for visibility, with a $25 administrative fee, or 2 hours volunteering to setup the Faire. Nonprofit groups purchase sales booths for their own fundraising. All commercial food vendors who participate each year are required to sponsor and give a percentage of their profits to a nonprofit of their choice. The “Kids Zone” is run by volunteers and all profits are donated
to Comfort Zone Camps. And finally; in recent years the Faire has contributed funds to nonprofit organizations in a “Grant for Work” program in trade for their volunteer hours running the Faire (i.e. setup, cleanup, vendor and/or visitor support). The Ashland Strawberry Faire is excited about partnering with the Ashland Kiwanis Club, and to combine their efforts to support our community. To handle Faire business and give continuity to our goals, the Board needs a minimum of eleven directors. Currently three Kiwanis members, Dan DiCandilo, John McDaniel and Shannon McClure, have stepped up to fill empty seats on the Board. “We really appreciate the enthusiasm of the Ashland Kiwanis Club, and more importantly, are confident that the good work of the Faire will continue,” said Stockwell. Dunk your favorite public official for charity at the Ashland Strawberry Faire! By Lorie Foley Ashland Strawberry Faire ASHLAND – Hanover County is fortunate that many of our public officials believe in the work of local non-profit groups. Mayor Jim Foley wants to end his term on Ashland Town Council with a splash. “Getting dunked for the Hanover Arts & Activities Center will be my honor and pleasure,” the mayor said. The Center will not receive critical funding in 2019 because the Ashland Musical Variety Show will be post-

poned until the following year. The venue for the Variety Show, Blackwell Auditorium at Randolph-Macon College, will be under construction in 2019. The Ashland Musical Variety Show is a biennial production and typically raises more than $20,000 for the Center. Losing this funding in 2019 will be a hardship for the Center, so Foley is hoping to help fill in the funding gap and have fun doing so. “In typical Ashland fashion, I plan to wear a costume and a swim cap for my grand dunking,” Foley said with

a laugh. Ashland Town Manager Josh Farrar is willing get dunked for
Mamas With a Mission, a nonprofit group that views themselves as “collection warriors.” Mamas With a Mission collects and delivers bereavement baskets to parents who have experienced the loss of a child. “There are so many great nonprofits and charities in town, it is hard to choose just one. I’ve gotten to know Stephanie Hare over the past 10 years and learned she is coming from a place of love and empathy for others in working with Mama’s With a Mission,” Farrar said.
Council member Kathy Abbott has chosen Circles Ashland for her charity. Circles Ashland is an extraordinary program that offers a more permanent solution to poverty in our community by bringing together a group of people around a family in need, to address and resolve the unique challenges that the family faces. “If it helps to continue their work lifting families out of the circle of poverty, I’m happy to take a dunk for them,” said Abbott.
