Most of the funding for the 7,000-square-foot terminal building will be provided by a VDOA grant.

The facility will include many new spaces, including a spacious lobby for air travelers, conference room facilities, a pilot lounge and flight planning and vending facilities in addition to a new front line counter and Fixed Base Operator spaces.

Construction has begun and is scheduled to be completed in about a year.

Contractor is Oyster Point Construction Company. Architect is PHSPlus.

The Hanover County Hanover Airport is a General Aviation Reliever Airport for Richmond International. It opened in 1969.

Just over 100 aircraft are based at the Hanover Airport. In addition to a variety of smaller aircraft, the airport is designed for mid-size corporate jets.

The new terminal building will be adjacent to the Luck Stone Corporation hangar that was completed earlier this year.

Luck Stone is the airport’s first corporate hangar.

Heart of Virginia Aviation, the Fixed Base Operator of the Hanover Airport, is about to embark on the construction of a new 100x150 corporate hangar adjacent to the new terminal building.

Visitors can watch as the Church Site lights up with holiday lights, all while enjoying plenty of other holiday festivities.

The Local Cup food truck will offer refreshments and Mechanicsville Baptist Church will have wandering carolers walking the Church Site grounds.

Santa Claus will stop by on the fire truck to greet children and receive their wish list letters.

Local vendors will be selling handmade goods and the Historic Polegreen Gift Shop will be open as well.

Lastly, the Henrico Minute Company will set up a Revolutionary War encampment beside the church site.

Household hazardous waste, paper shredding event to be held Saturday

HANOVER -- Hanover County will hold a special household hazardous wastes and paper shredding recycling event between 8 a.m. and noon on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Mechanicsville Solid Waste Convenience Center at 7427 Verdi Lane. Residents will be able to recycle household hazardous wastes and shred up to four boxes (10x12x18) of personal documents or information at no charge.

Household hazardous waste accepted for recycling at this event includes pool chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, household cleaners and oil-based paints. Electronic waste will not be accepted for recycling at this event. This event is for Hanover County residents only (ID required). No businesses will be permitted. No out-of-county materials will be accepted.

All residents must wear masks; all residents must stay in their vehicles; and material being dropped off must be in the trunk, far rear of SUV/Van or bed of pick-up truck (furthest point from resident).

Elliott joins dad among NASCAR champs

Chase Elliott began Sunday at Phoenix Raceway with a bad run of luck. After two failed prerace inspections, he was beginning the NASCAR Cup Series Season Finale 500 at the back of the pack—not where you want to be when you’re one of the four drivers competing for the Cup Series championship.

But the 24-year-old son of a racing legend – NASCAR Hall of Fame driver Bill Elliott – would not be deterred from his quest to join his father among the ranks of NASCAR’s Cup Series champions.

Elliott wasted no time working through the pack, taking only two or three dozen laps to make it up to the front of the pack. By Lap 79, he took his first lead. From then on, he stayed in the mix until he passed Joey Logano with 43 laps to go and held the lead for good.

While none of his fellow championship contenders could not overtake Elliott at the end, Elliott was overtaken by emotion after the checkered flag.

“I’m at a loss for words. This is unbelievable. Oh, my gosh. We did it. I mean, we did it,” he said. “I’m not sure I could have sat down and drawn it up any better, you know? So for me, it’s unbelievable. It’s something that I’m not sure – well, I know I haven’t let it sink in yet. I’m

waiting on it to hit me and I’m going to break down here and look like a fool in a minute. I know it’s coming, so I really hope I get done with all this media before it happens.”

Elliott was congratulated by a number of his competitors on the track after the race, some giving his No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet a gentle bump and him thumbs-up. His Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson, who finished fifth in his last race as a full-time driver, came over to give him a hug.

“Jimmie and I have shared some really cool moments on track, and they’ve been in really big moments of my career,” Elliott said. “The moment we shared after Watkins Glen, the road to that first win. And then for the greatest of all time to be kind of hanging it up today and to win a championship on that day, I mean, that’s just a really cool thing. As a fan of his, No. 1, and as a person that’s looked up to Jimmie in many ways over the years, I’m not sure I could have dreamt that any better.”

It was a special moment for Johnson, too.

“I’m so happy for that guy – great friend, great family,” Johnson said. “To watch him grow up and to be around him and to give him some advice from time to time has really been meaningful for me. Today I think more about him winning a championship – more than anything – is pretty awesome.”

Before too long, Elliott was likewise embraced by his father as well as his mother, Cindy.

The race was full of history. In addition to it being Johnson’s final race, the Elliotts became the third father-son duo to win NASCAR Cup Series championships. The first pair was Lee and Richard Petty, the second Ned and Dale Jarrett. Lee Petty won three championships, in 1954, 1958 and 1959. Richard Petty won seven, in 1964, 1967, 1971, 1972, 1974, 1975 and 1979. Ned Jarrett won two championships, in 1961 and 1965, while and Dale won one in 1999.

Bill Elliott’s championship came in 1988.

All four championship contenders finished in the top four. Brad Keselowski finished second, Joey Logano third and Denny Hamlin fourth. After Johnson, Ryan Blaney, Kevin Harvick, Matt DiBenedetto, William Byron and Martin Truex Jr. rounded out the top 10.

The win Sunday was the fifth win for Elliott in 2020. He had 15 top-five finishes and 22 top 10 finishes. Of those, three wins, five top fives and seven top 10s came in the playoffs. One of those playoff wins – on Nov. 1 at the Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway – was critical. Elliott had to win it to make the quartet competing for the series championship in
