Winter sports resuming Jan. 4 Second semester requests considered By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND -- Hanover County Public Schools officials announced last week that winter sports in county schools can resume preparation and practice on Monday, Jan. 4, when students return from winter break. The teams will play an abbreviated in-county only competitive schedule, and eighth-graders will be eligible to try out for high school teams. No winter sports will be offered for middle school students, and teams that qualify for post season playoffs will be allowed to participate. In a statement released by HCPS last week, officials noted factors that could influence decisions moving forward. “We will continue to monitor this
closely and make any decisions regarding sports or our daily operations that may be necessary. In order to ensure a successful sports season, we need every person in our community to stay vigilant in mitigating the spread of COVID-19.” Earlier this month, a number of students and parents urged Hanover County School Board members to reconsider a decision to suspend winter sports practices. “We are completely aware of the risks and the precautions needed to make the season successful and are completely onboard with doing whatever it takes and whatever is needed to ensure that we are allowed to play,” Hanover High School swimmer Henry Atkinson said during a public comment period at this month’s school board

ASHLAND -- With the upcoming budget season right around the corner, Hanover County’s teachers presented a wish list to Hanover County School Board members that included a salary increase, a bolstered share of employee health insurance costs, and more planning time. Gene Matthews, president of the Hanover Education Association (HEA) and Bill Callahan, Hanover Professional Educators (HPE) president, outlined the request in advance of the budget process that begins in earnest next month. Matthews said the requests were the result of surveys submitted by county teachers enrolled in the organizations see BUDGET, pg.3

HANOVER — More than 2,000 new free children’s and chapter books were distributed by Hanover 4-H to area children and families in 2020. The estimated value of the books donated to Hanover County youth is between $15,000 and $20,000. Hanover gained access to the books through a Virginia 4-H partnership with The Molina Foundation for the Book Buddies 2020 Families Learning Together literacy program. This national initiative helps encourage literacy and reading skills during the summer and the back-to-school season as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. Giving children books to keep is an action step that reinforces a positive message about reading.
According to Sharonda Lindsay, Hanover’s 4-H program assistant, she traveled to Chesapeake on three different occasions to fill her truck with books. “Getting the books loaded from a hot warehouse in August, and then unloaded and stamped, was the tough job,” she said. “Being able to bring joy to children in the form of a book was easy.” The books from Disney Publishing were distributed locally through Hanover Food pantries, WHEAT, Moments of Hope Outreach, First Shiloh Baptist Church/Son Learning Center, First Baptist of Elmont, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, South Anna 4-H Club, Hanover Free Community Libraries and ALL Hanover Middle and High Schools. Books were being distributed to students through random giveaways, classroom projects, and meal distributions. see BOOKS, pg. 4

Three Florida men arrested, charged in felonies related to larceny of automobile Staff Report news@mechlocal.com HANOVER – Three men were taken into custody on Tuesday, Dec. 15, following a reported larceny from an automobile in the 6300 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike. Lt. James R. Cooper, public information officer for the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, said MOBLEY responding deputies found the victim’s vehicle had a window broken out and property was stolen. When the victim arrived, deputies were told that credit cards had already been used at a nearby grocery store. “Deputies immediately began to canvass the area and located an individual walking out of a grocery store with only
a gift card. They conducted a consensual encounter with the individual. A vehicle was then observed leaving the parking lot in a reckless manner. A traffic stop was immediately initiated on that vehicle,” Cooper said. “During the course of the stop, numerous tools consistent with breaking out a window were observed in the vehicle,” he said. “A search of the vehicle was conducted and personGIRLY al property belonging to the victim was located. The driver and passenger in this vehicle were involved in the reported larceny, along with the subject deputies were speaking to in the parking lot.” Cooper said the following were arrested: Markeith D. Mobley, 27, of Pocono Beach, Florida; Mark A. Girly, 24, of
Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and Darien A. Martin, 24, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. that prioritized their needs regarding budget requests for the 2021-2022 year. “First, it should come as no surprise that overwhelmingly our HEA and HPE members indicated a need to improve salaries as their overarching

Downtown was the place to be on Dec. 24 By Melody Kinser Managing Editor hile I have a great appreciation for shopping at malls, I always get nostalgic for the downtown atmosphere at Christmas time. I lived in the small city where I was born and raised for several years before I started on my career path. A tradition was to walk into the downtown on Christmas Eve because everybody was out and about -- whether it was last-minute shopping or just seeing who else was on the streets. In addition to later hours for the shops, restaurants also kept their doors open for those folks milling about on the streets, chatting with people they would encounter, checking out the decorations adorning the city-owned properties, as well as those glistening through the windows of the stores. It felt magical -- even as I got older. And there was the sound of the bell ringing beckoning shoppers to support the efforts of The Salvation Army. Church and civic groups were among the volunteers ringing the bell. Let’s not forget my hometown is one of those where everybody knows everybody. Once I started working at the daily newspaper, who I was became more commonly known, but that was all right. My parents and sister had already made names for themselves through their contributions and successes in the community. As I type, I’m smiling thinking about those Christmas Eves so many years ago, and the
W
delight on the children’s faces when Santa Claus was available to take their wish lists in the town square. There was an energy, an excitement in the air as I would stroll down the streets absorbing the moment. I lived about four blocks from the heart of the downtown. It was an enjoyable walk, with neighbors on porches (the cold temperature didn’t matter) talking about their Christmas Day plans and if they needed to do any more shopping. I’ll admit there were a few Christmas Eves when I was one of those near-panicking types needing another gift or two. Yes, it always worked out -- despite some frenzied moments. Since making Hanover County my home, I regret never having visited here when Downtown Richmond was alive with the Legendary Santa and stores decorated extravagantly to invite in

shoppers. My sister and brother-in-law settled here in 1976, so I had opportunities, but I was way too involved in my life. (Yes, it was all about me at the time. Who didn’t go through that?!) I do enjoy the stories I’ve heard about Downtown Richmond and the wonderland it became during the Christmas holidays. If memory serves me, a tradition for my sister and brother-in-law was attending the performance of The Nativity Pageant at the Carillon in Byrd Park. Whenever the family gathered for Christmas in Richmond, the pageant was a must-see. OK, I’ll admit it -- this Grinch never did see it (again, it was an all about me world for a long time). Mom thoroughly loved it though. I do have many regrets about the Richmond that I did not get to experience before deciding to make this area my home. My sister Robin loved the city and all it had to offer, and Christmas was certainly a high point for her and Michael. As the big day approaches, I’ll travel down memory lane to the Christmases of the past, when all of the family was together and the spirit of the season (as in Jesus’ birth) was and is still celebrated. “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. ... And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.” -- Luke 2-11 Merry Christmas!

Wittman loyal to his party not democracy On Dec. 10, U.S. Rep. Rob Wittman (R-VA 1st District) signed on to an amici curiae brief to show his support for a lawsuit filed in the Supreme Court of the United States. The lawsuit essentially asks the court to disregard the legitimately cast votes of citizens in four states and give those votes and an electoral win to Donald Trump. The secretaries of state in all 50 states have stated that there was no fraud in this election. Trump lost. That is the truth. This ongoing ploy by Donald Trump and his enablers to falsely claim fraud, pretend that he won, and rally his supporters to anger and, potentially, to violence is the most vile and disgusting display of unpatriotic behavior that I have witnessed in my adult life. And now Rob Wittman has joined in and, in so doing, has violated his oath of office to “… support and defend the Constitution of the United States ...” You cannot defend the Constitution and, at the same time, try to overturn the legitimate results of an election. Perhaps this should not come as a surprise because Wittman’s loyalty has consistently been to the Republican Party, not to the United States. So, to the citizens of Hanover County and Ashland who voted to give Rob Wittman another term, I hope you are happy. You’ve managed to re-elect someone who essentially is a traitor to our democratic republic. Jacqueline Anderson Doswell

After midnight: What makes a person become a night owl? By Jim Ridolphi for the Mechanicsville Local I read with interest an article describing some of the aspects of our lives that have been forever changed by almost a year’s worth of pandemic mentality. I’m not sure where the author obtained his information, but he pointed to an increase in the number of drivers operating their vehicles in a reckless manner, specifically noting the increase of cars that run red lights. I checked out his theory later that day and, lo and behold, the guy was right. While it wasn’t unusual in

in the service of his beloved nation, reminded the audience of an obscure but relevant introspective attributed to America’s 16th President Abraham Lincoln: “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we lose our freedoms it will be because we have destroyed ourselves from within.” Fast forward to the 2020 presidential election in which career politician Joe Biden defeated apolitical, incumbent Donald Trump amid allegations of election fraud, corruption of grave national concern if true. As the nation moved towards November, a perfect storm comprised of COVID19, brutal racial incidents, violent protests and felons defying law enforcement signaled that Trump could be in trouble despite his excellent record over the last four years. At this point, the transition of presidential power from the media’s Prince of Darkness to Biden will take place on Jan. 20, 2021. Although continued
8
the past to witness a stray car speeding through a yellow light, my experience at every light revealed a number of vehicles not only violating the yellow signal, but plowing right through the red. Returning to the article, which now had more credence gained from my own personal experience, he noted that a significant amount of Americans now find it difficult to maintain normal schedules, a phenomenon that has resulted in a notable increase in what I’ll call the night owl syndrome. It seems more and more Americans are staying up later
and later. Even companies like Netflix have created categories for a group that has learned to appreciate sunset more than sunrise. I didn’t need to test that assertion contained in his article. For more years than not, I’ve preferred the stillness and peace of of 3 a.m. to much busier times of day prescribed by society as working hours. Working from home has allowed many the freedom to explore flexibility in schedules, and, often, tasks are assigned with completion dates with no requirements on what time of the day the work must be accomplished.
I spent years tending bar in various establishments in Richmond, and I think my love of late night could have its roots in those jobs, or maybe it was even earlier as I learned to appreciate the solitude and beauty of a city still asleep when I carried morning papers for the Times-Dispatch. As a child, I would spend weeks visiting my great-aunt’s house in Petersburg. She lived in an old farmhouse that was located along Route 460, at that time a busy and welltraveled route from Richmond to Norfolk. I recall summer evenings sitting on her porch
after everyone else had retired and listening to the trucks as they sped past, their tires emitting a high-pitched whine that persisted long after the vehicle was out of sight, followed by a still silence. Minutes later, the next rig began its late night symphony. My cousin told me the trucks made a unique noise because of the hill beside my aunt’s home. He explained that, when going downhill, truckers often slid the gear shift to neutral to gain more speed. “They’re in Georgia overdrive when they pass,” he told me. Now, I was never sure what
that meant, but I suppose free spinning wheels could produce the sound that accompanied the passing semis. In any case, who knows what causes a person to eventually become a night owl. Personally, in my line of work, the quiet still of late night is more conducive to writing. Throughout my life, I’ve found myself asking the question why am I heading to work when everyone is heading home. I still haven’t found the answer, but it’s good to know that even in the solitude found only after midnight, you are not alone.
improvement should always be the goal of any society/government, questions abound regarding Biden’s capability. Despite the physical and mental enhancements that boosted the 78-year-old across the finish line, Biden has slipped markedly from the strong, seasoned Democrat that Obama named second in command, leaving unanswered questions about his fitness for the task. The primary duty of every president is to secure America from external and internal threats that would undermine its international status and the freedom/welfare of its citizens. How will Biden handle the next conflict with the likes of Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping or Kim Jong-un? Or an Osama bin Laden clone? We can safely bet that his resolve will be tested … and with him, America’s. Biden has already declared his intention to countermand Trump’s initiative to safeguard America’s borders, a dangerous notion that past presidents, including Democratic Party predecessors have consistently rejected. And will he stand firmly behind law and order when a
significant portion of his constituency regard it contemptuously? We also don’t know the outcome of his possible involvement with his son Hunter’s alleged illegal dealings. At least one Republican conspiracy theorist postulated that Biden is merely a stand-in for Kamala Harris and that his premature ouster will come at the hands of the Democratic Party. This may be far-fetched, but integrity is often absent in politics. This nation is politically divided and wobbling without any applied force from enemies, the potential demise that Lincoln hypothesized long ago. If America ever topples, citizens would have a front row seat at the real meaning of anarchy and/or oppression. The pulse of the nation’s concern over its future has been highly visible with the massive demand for arms and ammunition. Every American, irrespective of political persuasion, should support its elected president, respecting the officeholder’s duty to uphold the nation’s Constitution and defend our freedom/welfare. The notable exception would
be a betrayal of those responsibilities. Now, 250+ years after this resilient nation rebelled against England, its destiny remains as it has from the outset, in the hands of its foundation, God Almighty. Daniel Corso Mechanicsville
Dylan Roof ’s battle cry). They’re going to enslave children in restaurant basements (without basements?). And Joe Biden is so moderate he’s boring (and I’ll take boring over evil anytime). These falsehoods, smoke screens, lies, foolish fantasies and fake “alternative facts” (thank you, KellyAnne) are meant for one reason and one reason only! They’re meant to “keep us from paying attention to that man behind the curtain!!” The one thing (people who’ve lived in NYC for decades) will tell you (and being in the military for 24 years gives you the opportunity to meet folks from everywhere) is that “Mister” Trump is only good at “lying, smoke screens, fantasies, and fake alternative facts.” He’s honed this (“expertise?”) since 1973 when he and his daddy kept Black folks from renting “Trump Management Company’s” high-end expensive luxury apartments (this, of course, illustrates how stupid he also is) because (news flash) Black folks’ money is just as green as white folks’. Trump marked perspective
tenants’ names on a list with a “C” for “colored” to keep them out of these apartments (again, very stupid). As a reference, Google “trump management company 1973.” Trump also used a pseudonym “John Baron” when calling into a NYC radio show in the 1970s and ‘80s to disdain then Mayor Ed Koch (who knew how evil Trump was way back then). These two hated each other (because again, Ed knew the real Trump). Trump has never been an author so the only reason he’d refer to himself using the pseudonym “John Baron” was his continued cowardice, which still reigns true in 2020 (and illustrates how stupid he is to try to fool folks in 1970/‘80s). The only “evil one running rampant” (which has spent the last 47 months rampantly running) in our country will be leaving the stolen office in about five weeks (at this writing). “DJ” Trump will only be seen by historians as a mere anomaly in our continuing march to improve our infant self-rule experiment of

As in “social security, the U.S. military, public schools/libraries, the local banking system, Medicare/Medicaid, etc. Why are people scared to death of the “evil one unleashed upon us” (“Joe Biden’s socialism”)? Constitutional democracy. DJ Trump will become known as the dark horse’s patoot who nearly ended our fledgling democracy for his own benefit. Why/how does he get 126 sitting members of Congress to commit sedition by backing his continued attempts at thwarting the democratic process (they shouldn’t be seated in the 117th Congress either)? Why are groups of hate mongers marching on the streets of D.C.(burning BLM banners)? Why is it that when we push back against racism, we’re labeled as “socialists” (or even “communists”?)? Because Trumpism has replaced all the other evil “isms.” Because Trumpism has become a “blind cult.” At least Jim Jones and David Koresh had overt cult theories. At least the true evil could be seen. Trumpism is invisible. Trumpism is the neoFascism which is replacing the old Republican guard. He (as of now) may have lost this time. But concrete fascism takes awhile to settle in. Hitlerian political theory took from 1927 until 1939 to gain a significant enough amount of foothold to take over Germany’s brand new democracy from the end of World War I. Time will tell who the “evil one” really is. It has been this way since the dawn of human beings. The Bible is riddled with stories of how evil keeps attempting to gain footholds in various societies at various times all down through history. Keep a watchful eye out. Keep an open mind and watch as Joe Biden cleans up the filth left on America’s front door and simultaneously “builds back better.” Dr. Richard Ryder Mechanicsvillez
Constituency built with your money Reading the cover story in the Dec. 16 edition of The Mechanicsville Local left me pulling my hair out. Why are taxpaying citizens so inclined to buy this bunk? I am referencing the county employees getting a bonus. In a unanimous vote (hardly surprising), the Hanover County Board of Supervisors approved a bonus payment of $750 for full-time employees and a $375 bonus for parttime employees. This includes all county and county school employees, some estimated 5,000. County Administrator John Budesky states in the article “this represents an effort to reward employees whose merit raises were cancelled this year due to COVID budget constraints”. Now I have been around awhile, and any definition of merit raises typically meant that specific criteria to determine which employees merited receiving a merit pay raise … but this is not done the same way in the public sector. And why not? It isn’t their money so dole it out to everyone. They (the supervisors) can remind the ever-growing public sector next election cycle just who approved their bonus and or last raise. Having been involved in local elections for a number of years, I have identified that the public sector has now gotten so large if a candidate can lock up their votes they are alone enough to get them across the finish line. Budesky goes on to state “Our employees have gone well above and beyond in the efforts to address those ongo-
ing needs”. Let’s delve into that issue in an honest manner. Just what does that mean “gone well above & beyond”? The employees of Hanover County are paid to do a job, paid a salary, which includes a benefit package that is vastly superior to most private sector employees. The pensions alone are now drowning states in debt. Their health insurance is largely subsidized by you and me, 12 or more paid holidays that most private sector employees do not receive. Often overlooked is the cost of buying back of unused sick leave and/or vacation at their retirement, paid out in lump sums and swelling each year within county budgets. To the best of my knowledge, not one Hanover County or school employee has lost their jobs during this health pandemic, nor missed a single paycheck. Not one of them has lost their health insurance like the millions in the private sector. Eight million in the private sector are still out of work. Tens of thousands of small businesses have mortgaged their homes, borrowed from every available source of funds to try and keep their businesses afloat. Bankruptcies galore. Equally appalling is the source of the funds used to pay for these bonuses … Budesky says that “the majority of the funds to pay for this are CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act related funds”. Congress in their rush to “save us” apparently put little restrictions on how this money (borrowed money, I might add) was to be used. Engage or the leviathan will swallow us. although initial steps to correct the problem were included in last year’s budget. “Our associations also ask that extra compensation be paid to teachers on the steps in the 10- to 25-year range of the salary scale most affected by salary compression. Both HEA and HPE members indicated that fixing salary compression for teachers and continuing the movement to a linear scale should be a priority for the school board,” Matthews said. County teachers also listed planning time, or lack thereof, as a priority on their budget wish list to board members. “Beginning with the second semester of the present 2020-2021 academic year, we ask that the school board to consider designating one day
per week as an asynchronous learning day: to give students additional time to meet expectations, to give teachers additional time to prepare lessons and to give custodians an extended opportunity to deep clean facilities,” Matthews told board members at a meeting earlier this month. Employees also asked that the current budget absorb the increased costs for employees associated with health care coverage. The Hanover Education Association (HEA) and Hanover Professional Educators (HPE) have collaborated on teacher surveys and the compilation of a list of priorities for the upcoming budget year. “We ask that the school board fully absorb the entire cost of the employee’s share of any health insurance increase,” Matthews read from the joint of Lakeridge Square Court, Ashland.

John and Barbara Allen of Mechanicsville celebrated their 60th anniversary on December 24 in Cape Town, South Africa, and Johannesburg City with their daughter, Dr. Kim M. Allen.
Jessica Rice and her family have been busy heading into the Christmas holiday with visits to the Mangohick Fire Department where the children got some time with Santa Claus to discuss their wish lists. They’ve been shopping locally and also planning more adventures. The Eastern Hanover Volunteer Fire Department treated kids in their coverage area with Santa Runs. The Jolly Old Elf took the time for a photo on Dec. 12.

The Universe from the Center: Following up on Hyabusa 2 and asteroid samples By Dr. George Spagna Special to The Mechanicsville Local Note: The Keeble Observatory at RandolphMacon College has ceased public viewing due to the pandemic until further notice. What they are not is crowded together into dense clusters a la Star Wars and evasive maneuvers by the Millennium Falcon! Collisions between asteroids, while likely to be rare are the likely origin of most meteorites (unlike meteors which are thought to be fragments of comets). asteroids vary in color and where specific types can be found in the “asteroid belt.” z S-type asteroids are “stony” – various silicate minerals. They are mostly in the inner part of the belt, from 2 – 3.5 AU from the Sun. Somewhat reddish in color, they are dark (low albedo) and show low abundances of volatiles. z M-type asteroids are metal rich with reflectance spectra indicating iron and nickel. They have slightly higher albedo than S-types, but share the same region of the asteroid belt.

meeting. Apparently, those appeals did not fall on deaf ears as Hanover becomes one of the few metro counties participating in winter sports. Officials said the decision was accompanied by full school board support. Students who spoke at the meeting said the lack of winter sports left a noticeable void in their athletic pursuits, and some said the decision could even affect their ability to obtain college scholarships. Most cited the emotional impact of sports and the ability to interact with teammates. For some seniors, it was their last chance. “In the short time I’ve participated in track conditioning, my mental health has vastly
z C-type asteroids are the most common, concentrated near 3 AU but can be found from 2 - 4 AU from the Sun. They are very dark and rich in carbonaceous material. Many also contain significant amounts of volatile materials, particular water. (Think Ryugu, which is a C-type.) z P-type asteroids are found farther out, from 3 – 5 AU, peaking near 4 AU. They are slightly reddish in color, and may contain substantial carbon-rich (organic) compounds, similar to comets. Asteroids are not uniformly distributed in the belt. There are significant “gaps” in their spatial distribution due
to orbital resonances with the regular revolution of Jupiter. Asteroids with orbital periods which form integer ratios with Jupiter’s period (e.g. 2:1, 3:1) get kicked out of those orbits, forming the so-called Kirkwood Gaps. There also are several classes of asteroids which are not part of the asteroid belt. We’ll discuss those in February. Lunar phases for January: Last Quarter on the 6th, at 4:38 a.m.; New Moon on the 13th, at 12:02 a.m.; First Quarter on the 20th, at 4:03 p.m.; Full Moon on the 28th at 2:18 p.m. All times are Eastern Standard. (For time zones west of here, the New Moon happens on the 12th.)
Predawn planet watchers early in the month can still see Venus to the southeast. Venus will be the brightest thing in that direction until the Sun comes up. Mars will be due south around 7 p.m., and sets around 1 a.m. Jupiter and Saturn are setting around 6 p.m., so you’ll only have a couple hours after sunset to see them to the southwest. Saturn appears below Jupiter as they separate from December’s close conjunction. At mid-month, about two hours after sunset, we find the constellation Perseus at zenith. This is not home to a lot of bright stars, but you can find the interesting variable binary
Algol about 8 degrees to the northwest. (My undergraduate advisor discovered a third component to this system, and elicited groans from a meeting when he announced that “Algol is divided into three parts.” Students of Latin and readers of Julius Caesar will know whence that comes!) Turning to the northeast, bright Capella, about 58 degrees above the horizon, is the brightest star in the constellation Auriga. Behind you, to the southeast at 65 degrees elevation, Aldebaran marks the bright heart of the Bull, the constellation Taurus. The Pleiades are to the
south, a bit higher at 76 degrees. To the east, we see the bright “twins” of Castor above Pollux, in the constellation Gemini. They’re not even the same brightness, but they’ve been paired as such since antiquity. Below these two, at about 23 degrees your binoculars will reveal the open cluster known as the Beehive. Orion needs no introduction! $300 school supply stipend for all teachers as well as a stipend for those that are forced to surrender their planning periods for other assignments. Members also expressed a desire to provide more than the 3% raise for teacher and classroom assistants.
Callahan said bus drivers also were asked to list top three budget initiatives to increase their compensation. The ranked VRS membership as number one and that request was included in the joint presentation. Teachers also expressed
concerns regarding the work/ life balance and an increasing demand on schedules. “Other factors that our members listed on the surveys that impacted their work/life balance include the increasing number of after-school meetings, standardized test proc-
toring, the growing amount of paperwork, and the additional professional days added to the school calendar,” Callahan said. “There needs to be a reduction in unnecessary duties, and many of these factors can be addressed without impacting
the budget,” he added. Superintendent Michael Gill told school board members that compensation is a major priority in planning for the upcoming budget. The superintendent will present the 2021-2022 budget next month.
improved and I find myself more positive and happy to be in school,” said Autumn Just as she asked board members to restore the indoor track season. Spectators will not be allowed at winter sports events. As parents and students plan for second semester in Hanover’s continuing optional instruction, more of them are opting for a return to face-to-face instruction. Accommodating all of those requests is a top priority for school administration, according to Jennifer Greif, assistant superintendent for instructional leadership. Most of those requests are from parents whose children chose online elementary instruction last semester, but are seeking a return to in-class instruction for the second term.
More than 500 parents are requesting a return to face-toface instruction in elementary grades, while only 10 requested to switch from face-to-face to online. Regarding the numbers, Greif said “they’re not evenly distributed” among campuses “so that makes staffing and reallocating resources a little more challenging.” Additional elementary staffing has been acquired to accommodate the large number of students wishing to return to in-class instruction. While the challenges vary in middle and high school in accommodating the requests, solutions will require flexibility and some teachers could teach both online and in-class. “As we said in the fall, we knew the major challenge for second semester is the rearranging, and the rearranging
is sometimes going to impact teachers or students who aren’t ever changing their learning setting,” Greif said. Greif said the requests are necessitating staffing adjustments and some high school students currently enrolled in online classes might return to campus for some classes while taking others online. “We are looking to reallocate our resources to accommodate as many requests as we can,” Greif said. Requests for ELS students, disabled learners and Pre-K-3 learners are considered first, followed by attention to students who are struggling academically “in their current settings” or students who are having technological problems that have not currently been solved. Officials also are exploring options to expand elementary
art, physical education, and library learning opportunities, addressing some concerns expressed by parents earlier this fall. “We are trying to work through some better options on that,” Greif said. Parents also had requested a second elective option for middle school students, but Greif said the idea of “remixing” students didn’t seem viable, but said mini-electives would be available for “enrichment.” Plans for the second semester are ongoing and schedules are being compiled as restaffing and reorganizing staff continues. Greif said one constant does, however, remain. “What has not changed between semester one and semester two is that our health plan mitigation strat-
egies will still be followed,” Greif said. “They are just as important on Feb. 3 as they are today: making sure we have appropriate social distancing, hand hygiene and mask wearing, and all of the other strategies we have been carrying through the fall semester.” Superintendent Michael Gill said school officials are working overtime to adjust to meet the requests and maintain choices for parents and students. “We are continuing to do everything we can to maintain both options. We continue to plan for the second semester and do everything we can to honor both of those options,” Gill said. Grief said parents will be notified in January with final decisions on those transfer requests.

Scammers try to get you to act before you think. Don't fall for it. z Think the link may be real? Double check the URL. Scammers often buy official-looking URLs to use in their cons. Be careful that the link is really what it pretends to be. If the message alleges to come from the local government, make sure the URL ends in .gov (for the United States). Raceway readies for 75th birthday bash By Nick Vandeloecht Richmond Suburban News When looking back on the history of Richmond Raceway, one of the notes that caught track president Dennis Bickmeier’s eye was that it was the first racetrack to host an auto race in Virginia after World War II. “I feel like we’ve been making an impact ever since,” he said. Since its 1946 debut as a half-mile dirt track at what was then known as the Atlantic Rural Exposition Fairgrounds, the historic raceway has grown and evolved along with the motorsports industry, playing host to many of NASCAR’s most memorable moments and undergoing transitions that reflected the progression of the stock car entity as a whole. Those are among the moments that Richmond Raceway will be highlighting with its year-long commemoration of its 75th anniversary season in 2021. “We want to make sure that we take the time to honor the 75 greatest moments in Richmond Raceway racing history, and we want to make sure that we can engage our fans in a storytellers’ series, whereby fans can tell their stories about their greatest memories of Richmond Raceway,” Bickmeier said. Raceway officials plan to

Auto racing fans can expect more than just fireworks in 2021 as Richmond Raceway celebrates its 75th birthday.
share those stories through the track’s social media channels. A committee that they put together will come up with the 75 greatest moments in the history of the raceway, and those moments will be rolled out in groupings of 10 throughout the course of 2021, with
anticipation expected to build up towards the number-one moment’s reveal. Likely top candidates include the venue’s transformations, from when it was first paved in 1968 to when bulldozers, with the first being driven by Richard Petty, started dig-
ging up the track right after Neil Bonnett in 1988 won the final race on the half-mile configuration. Less than seven months later, Richmond hosted its first Cup race on its nowiconic 0.75-mile, D-shaped layout. There were a couple other
firsts that could land high on the 75 greatest moments’ list. Ted Horn won the track’s first major auto racing event, an open-wheel race, on the track’s first iteration in Oct. 12, 1946. Lee Petty won the
As promised, Hanover County schools reached a decision about whether or not to permit the winter sports season to begin last week. And the decision, announced Thursday, was to let the season start. Tryouts and organized practices for high school athletes may begin when students return from their winter break on Jan. 4. “We understand the importance of sports and other extracurricular activities to our students’ wellbeing beyond the playing field and believe this decision to offer a limited season allows us to continue offering a holistic education in these uncertain times,” the school system said in a statement released see HCPS, pg. 23

first NASCAR Cup Series race hosted at Richmond on April 19, 1953. Harry Gant took the checkered flag in the raceway’s first-ever night race on Sept. 7, 1991, making it the second active track on the current schedule (Bristol being the first in 1978) to host a Cup race under the lights. Bickmeier also recalled the infamous 1986 wreck in which race leaders Dale Earnhardt and Darrell Waltrip collided and crashed with two laps to go, setting the stage for Kyle Petty to collect his first career win in Cup. That wasn’t the only time that a crash at the front would involve an Earnhardt and set up an unexpected winner in Richmond. In 2008, Kyle Busch was driving in his first of 13

seasons for Joe Gibbs Racing after Dale Earnhardt Jr. moved to the organization – Hendrick Motorsports – that Busch had raced for the previous three years. Late in the Richmond spring race, Busch made contact with Earnhardt Jr., spinning out the latter and putting the former behind Clint Bowyer, who went on to grab the victory. The spin led to a memorable post-race interview by Earnhardt Jr. in which he said, “Whether it’s fair or not, he’s going to need some security from all of us.” Ten years later, after the two drivers united to discuss the race in an oral history by Jeff Gluck, Busch celebrated his victory in the spring race – his fifth of six Cup wins on the track – with fans in the stands on the front stretch. In addition to the fans’ experiences and memories taking center stage, Bickmeier sees

The short track – one of three that are less than a mile on the Cup slate – will also bring back races for two series that have either returned this year or will do so in 2021 after longtime absences. The Camping World Truck Series came back this past fall for the first time since 2005, and it will compete in Richmond again for the second consecutive season on Saturday, April 17. The Truck Series shares the two-race weekend with the Cup Series, which will hold its day race on Sunday, April 18. Later that year, the NASCAR

Just wanted to write a quick note to say how pleased we were with the recent sale of our home through The Tripp Hogg Team with ERA Woody Hogg & Associates. Tripp and Cammy were right there with us, guiding us through each step of the process Their knowledge and professionalism helped make everything go smoothly. I would highly recommend this team if you are looking to either buy or sell a home. Ric DiBagno
Tripp knows his stuff!. He came to our first meeting with a list of recent sales & he told us why each house sold for what it did.Tripp displays a calm confidence that comes from years of experience and a passion for what he does.We knew, right away, that he was he one to sell our home. After walking through our house &evaluating the market, he came up with a price that was higher than we anticipated. And he delivered! Our house sold in less than seven hours for over asking price!WhenTripp is on your side, he is“all in.”He makes sure all of the little things are addressed & he keeps things moving. He always gave us his full, personal attention.Tripp is the friendly neighbor whose super power is real estate! Cliff & Jen Robinson
