Public hearing set to decide use of ARPA funds By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local

HANOVER – The Hanover County Board of Supervisors scheduled a public hearing next month to consider the allocation of almost $30 million headed the county’s way thanks to funding provided through the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Finance Director Jacob Sumner provided an outline of a proposed plan to spend the money, with the bulk slated for broadband development in the county and a third of

the money planned for county schools. The U.S. Congress passed the relief bill in March, and the package includes funding for states and localities recovering from the COVID0-19 pandemic, infrastructure assistance, emergency rental assistance, education stabilization and stimulus checks sent to Americans earlier this year. “Hanover County was allocated $20.9 million as a direct allocation from the U.S. Treasury as a part of this local and state fiscal recovery fund

(Editor’s note: Our apologies to Dr. Michael gill, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools, for inadvertently publishing his end of year comments to parents and guardians in last week’s edition rather than his speech to members of the Class of 2021. Today, we share his speech.) Why? That single three-letter word is one we hear often, typically without giving it a second thought -- from a curious preschooler learning about the world, bombarding a tired parent with questions like “Why do dogs have tails?” or “Why can’t I have cookies before dinner?” to questioning all of the events that have unfolded

since last March and throughout your senior year. It is the first word of unlimited questions, yet by itself seemingly nondescript. I can recall that the theme for one of my middle school yearbooks was “Why Ask Why?” The question seemed to indicate that we should not try to make sense of the world’s many mysteries, but rather accept them as the so-called spice of life. I think it is okay to ask why, though. It is by being inquisitive that true growth and learning takes place. Without someone being inquisitive, think of all the many inventions or see WHY, pg. 4

By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ANOVER -- For almost 20 years, a steady procession of Hanover County youths have honed their inline skating and roller hockey skills at the Barton Memorial Rink located off U.S. 301 near the Courthouse. That constant use has taken its toll, and recently the rink has been closed due to severe fissures in the surface, deeming the facility unsafe for use since April. Parents Doug and Carol Barton, along with supporters and organizers of the rink, set up a Go Fund Me page to garner financial support for the needed upgrades, including a complete resurfacing. The Washington Capitals added some much needed support to that effort

discoveries that never would have occurred. One of the most difficult “why” questions to answer, though, is not one that leads to the discovery of new worldly knowledge, but rather one that is introspective and calls for self-analysis. That complicated question is: What is my why? Or, to put it another way, what is the thing that drives you -- that propels you to want to make a difference in the world? Some of you sitting here may know exactly why you will put in countless, tireless hours over the next many years. Your

why might revolve around advocating for the homeless, or educating as many people as you can on a topic that is vitally important to you. Perhaps your drive is to help others feel valued or make people laugh more. These are all worthy responses to the complicated question, but while there is not necessarily a right or wrong answer, your answer must be authentic and deeply personal. That is, no one but you can define what your why is. For me, I have reminders of my why every time I am in one of our schools, and when I’m at the school board office, posters of you, our students, surround me with the caption, “I am your why. Is it best for me?”

It reminds me of who should always drive my decisions. Still, many people, perhaps most people, never actually discover their why. It is a discouraging thought, because, as the great American humorist Mark Twain remarked, “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why." By this point, some of you may be wondering if you are already behind in the game of life, because you have not yet discovered your why. Others may have discovered it a long time ago, but because of life events, or perhaps other challenges, were taken on a detour further and further away from discovering or liv-

ing out your why. Do not fear, though. There is no timeline on finding it or fulfilling it. History is actually full of individuals discovering their great calling later in life. Renowned artist Grandma Moses didn’t paint her first canvas until the age of 76. One of the most well-known actors of our time, Morgan Freeman, didn’t have his Hollywood breakthrough until he was in his 50s. Even Colonel Sanders didn’t start his first KFC until the age of 65. As they say, however, “There’s no time like the present.” So then, if you don’t have a clue on how to go about finding that drive that will lead to a lifelong pursuit of

for us to move this project forward and bring the rink up to speed a few years ahead of schedule.” The Barton family has continued its connection to the track and raised more than $19,000 through a Go Fund Me account in the past year to assist with the much needed repairs. The Doswell Energy Center donated $25,000 to the project, bringing the total funds available to $44,200. Stamey said Dan Smith, assistant Parks and Rec director, contacted the Capitals and their youth Hockey Development Program concerning the rink and needed repairs. Through Smith’s efforts, the county entered a memo of understanding with the Capitals that will provide funding to replace all rink boards, fencing and provide new state-of-the-art resurfacing. ‘ The NHL team also will provide a scoreboard and roller hockey equipment and training to all Hanover County Public Schools and Parks and Recreation. The Capitals have commit-

ted $100,000 to the project. The county is responsible for removing the current boards and surface. “Basically, we’re doing the demo work and will install footings for the new board system,” Stamey said. The county also will commit to keeping the facility open for the next 20 years and allow the Capitals logo to be displayed at the site. “It’s good to see the NHL coming to Hanover County,” said Cold Harbor supervisor Michael Herzberg, who was instrumental in brokering the deal with the Caps. “This is a great example of team work and a win win win all the way for Parks and Rec and our citizens,” he added. Vice chair Angela KellyWiecek also expressed her appreciation to the Bartons for their continuing support and unwavering sense of community. “This is fantastic for the Barton family who have lost so much but continue to turn that loss into such a positive gift for others,” Kelly-Wiecek said. The renovations are expected to be completed by this fall.

Elementary School,” Stamey said. He was an avid hockey player. Daniel passed away in 2010 and his name was added to the rink’s name. Stamey said the efforts of the Bartons are a reflection of the type of people they are and their commitment to community. “This speaks volumes about their character and how they could take a tragedy like this and turn it into such a positive light for our residents here in Hanover,” Stamey said. The 20-year-old rink has been unusable for several months, but, when in operation, can accommodate street and roller hockey players and provide space for inline skating users. Although several repaving efforts have been completed during the past two decades, the fixes were temporary and the county had scheduled a permanent resurfacing for 2025. “It is 20 years old and in need of major repair,” Stamey said. “This is an opportunity

Emotions mixed as Fourth of July nears By Melody Kinser Managing Editor ntil July 7, 1992, the Fourth of July holiday had always been eagerly awaited and, when the day arrived, thoroughly enjoyed. However, on that Tuesday almost 29 years ago, Independence Day changed forever. Dad had been in the hospital for a week after we received the lung cancer diagnosis. The weekend of July 4 brought family to my parents’ house for a cookout and taking turns visiting Dad. His lack of appetite was very apparent when he could only attempt to eat a hot dog, topped with Mom’s famous chili.

U

That evening, Mom, my sister, brother-in-law and I joined Dad to watch the fireworks from his hospital window. Despite the circumstances, we had a great view of the sky over the downtown being lit up with a colorful pyrotechnics display provided by the city by the fire department. For the record, the firefighters were trained in how to use the fireworks. We knew Dad was ill but never suspected that would be our last holiday gathered as a family. It’s difficult to write -- even after the passage of time. I’ll go back to my high school years (early 1970s) when “the gang” would head to a friend’s house on High Street that overlooked the high school football field where the fireworks were set

off. We had the perfect spot in Keith’s yard. We had a tradition at Keith’s: Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon played continuously on a stereo he brought outside. We were seated on blankets or on the grass to enjoy the fireworks show and our annual tribute to Pink Floyd. With career moves and morning newspapers, the Fourth took on a different look with me often working. I prefer to think back on the days as a child when my parents took my sister and me to watch the fireworks and as a teen with my friends. Dad is always on our minds, as is his fierce devotion to his country. So, for him, I’ll say “Have a Happy and Safe Fourth!”

‘You might get a Frisbee’: Story shows there aren’t any losers By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist After years of covering high school graduations, I’d come to believe that I’d heard every imaginable speech delivered on every conceivable subject by some outstanding students in a variety of venues. All of them delivered a message of encouragement and hope for a promising future that begins a simple walk across a stage followed by a handshake. Last week, I attended a graduation

as a parent and took my seat with hundreds of other parents as Douglas Freeman celebrated its 65th graduating class that included my daughter Sophia, a year that school principal John Marshall described as like no other. He outlined a year filled with uncertainty, unimagined challenges and a fair number of disappointments. Marshall noted the efforts of this special group of graduates and how they endured what none of the previous 64 classes had experienced,

and came out on top. I thought the emphasis was appropriate and well deserved. While we’ve heard much about school officials, teachers and health officials and the massive effort displayed by all of them, we’ve heard little about the students who endured those trying months. The principal’s words were poignant and spoke to what this group of parents and students had achieved in the most difficult of circumstances. But, the true inspiration of the

day was delivered by a student who described himself as the least likely candidate to deliver a graduation message to his fellow students. Selected by his fellow seniors to deliver the graduation message, Jacob Taylor began his speech by telling the assembled crowd at RIR that this was probably the scariest moment of his young life, made even more challenging by a fear of public speaking. As he spoke, his self-deprecating see FRISBEE, pg. 8

Voter spread claims beg for the truth Donald Trump and his supporters continue to claim that widespread voter fraud, rigged voting machines and other illegal methods stole the election, and that the truth has been repressed by courts which refused to review evidence or dismissed cases without a hearing or by media, which refused to present evidence of fraud. This begs the question of why Donald Trump and supporters have not mentioned, and continue to remain silent about the several lawsuits filed by Smartmatic, a voting technology company, and Dominion Voting Systems for libel and defamation against Sidney Powell, Rudy Giuliani, and Fox News along with three of its hosts. These lawsuits present the ideal opportunity to present all the documented evidence of the fraud and manipulation that’s been claimed. The best defense against libel and defamation is the truth. So, It makes sense that Donald Trump and supporters would be closely following the progress of these suits, eagerly awaiting the defendants’ day in court. A court can’t suppress or dismiss the evidence in these suits because they are the heart of the defendants’ case, thus the defendants should be pressing for trial that gives them an opportunity to present their evidence, and not ask for the suits to be dismissed or try to seek settlement. Why would the defendants do that and miss the opportunity to place in official court records and in front of the country all their evidence of fraud? Could the silence indicate that evidence is lacking? Could it indicate that Donald Trump made claims of fraud and a stolen election to maintain his self-image as someone who never loses? see LETTERS, pg. 8

tains a growing database of voter fraud. Legislation to secure Virginia elections, including voter ID laws and rooting out illegal voters, was consistently vetoed by then Gov. McAuliffe who is making his comeback counting on all those illegal voters. We need electoral integrity and many states are taking action, which is a high priority in a swing state like Virginia where an election decided by a few hundred votes can have a national impact but Virginia has not cleaned up its voting problems. Per the Constitution, it is each state’s responsibility to ensure election integrity, but with the passage of H.R. 1-- 800 pages focused on the expansion of voting rights -we are assured that Democrats will forever be in charge. Trump did more for America in four years than they we will ever see again in history, but Trump was a hiccup that had to be eliminated -- it was essential that he was

cut off, cut down, cut out, and every tool was used to do so -- now the task of dismantling America can continue without interference, as conservatives are bullied, sullied, shut down and up -- the end is close and even the Trump-haters are not going to like it. We have a physically and cognitively impaired puppet in the White House who Is an embarrassment on the world stage -- while China and Russia are building up their military, we are offering soldiers transgender surgeries and pregnant flight suits and our colleges are providing crying rooms and hate white people classes -- so defend the Biden vote if that makes you proud but every legal voter should be confident their vote was not nullified by fraud and we are not. A 2020 Gallop Poll reported 59% lack confidence in our elections and widespread voter fraud will continue as people dismiss it and defend a faulty system that is well documented. KRISS WILSON

WILSON, Kriss Middlestadt, a lifelong entrepreneur and friend of many passed unexpectedly on June 21, 2021 at 61 years of age. Kriss is survived by his wife of 37 years, Karen Wilson; his children, Austin and Jack Wilson; his brother, Scott Wilson; sistersin-law, Judy Wilson and Toni Austin; brother-in-law, Mike Austin; and his nieces and nephews, Christie Wilson, Rutger Wilson, Hunter Wilson, Trevor Austin and Chloe Austin; and a number of dear friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Shirley and Leonard Wilson. Kriss was born on February 4, 1960 in San Francisco, California, before moving to Wilmington, Delaware, where he would spend much of his life. Kriss grew up in the Green Acres neighborhood of Wilmington and was a student at Carrcroft, Mt. Pleasant Middle and Mt. Pleasant High schools. It was here that he developed his love for sports, business and music. He excelled at swimming, became a star swimmer for multiple teams and was cap-

tain of the State Champion Mt. Pleasant High School team in 1978. He then went on to swim for James Madison University on a scholarship. As a young teenager, he had a keen sense for business. As newspaper delivery boy, he was known for exceptional customer satisfaction and received awards from the Wilmington News Journal for extraordinary service. After JMU, he moved to Richmond, Virginia and became a highly respected businessman. All those who worked with Kriss knew he would not settle for any job not done to perfection. Kriss loved all kinds of music but found a passion for the Grateful Dead. He traveled the country, attended hundreds of shows and had a vast collection of recorded material. His life’s journey was all about friendships and relationships. He touched so many lives and on so many levels. After moving to Richmond, Virginia, Kriss started a family with his wife, Karen and his first son, Austin in 1995, and second son, Jack in 1998. Kriss and his wife, Karen soon after moved to Mechanicsville, Virginia, which they and their family have called home for nearly 25 years. Above all, Kriss was someone who could enter a room knowing no one and leave knowing more than just everybody’s name. He cared and loved deeply and was never shy to make sure you knew that. At his core, Kriss was an entrepreneur and an overall people pleaser. He had many business ventures, starting Superior Document Services in 1998, all the way until 2021, where he excelled at his photographic talent with his development of RVA Drone Solutions. He is not only remembered for his work ethic, see OBITUARIES, pg. 11

Governor joins in welcoming ABC to county By Melody Kinser Managing Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Those traveling along Pole Green Road have watched a large state project come to fruition with the relocation of the Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Authority to land near exits to the interstates. On Monday, June 12, Governor Ralph Northam joined with state and local officials in cutting the ribbon

on the new facility. Situated on 40 acres, the new complex includes a 95,000-square-foot three-story office building and a 315,000-square-foot distribution center. The latter is said to be expandable up to 399,000 square feet. Ground was broken on the new location in February of last year, with a budget of $91 million. It is expected to be completed at that cost. CEO Travis Hill said, “The

completion of this project in Hanover County places Virginia ABC on a trajectory for growth and continued service to the commonwealth for decades to come.” “This location is ideal for servicing our 394 stores across the commonwealth and is accessible to our existing employees. Our new distribution center empowers us to be more efficient in how we supply our stores, resulting in

to determine where the agency would relocate, to the land purchase, design and finally overseeing construction of the state-of-the-art facility they soon will occupy. This solid partnership exemplifies how agencies can come together to accomplish great things.” The Pole Green Road location will serve Region 5’s Bureau of Law Enforcement office, which provides guidance to licensees and license

applicants regarding Virginia’s alcohol laws and regulations. In addition to Hanover County, the region includes Fredericksburg and the counties of Caroline, Essex, Goochland, King & Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford and Westmoreland. John O’Connor of the Richmond Times-Dispatch contributed to this report.

and small businesses affected by the pandemic. “This is to help our local citizens and small businesses . . . and some of our more vulnerable populations,” Sumner said. Some of those local services could include food, housing or utility assistance. The bulk of the ARA money, about $16 million, is proposed to be used for broadband improvement and expansion to underserved areas of the county. The federal legislation identifies broadband projects as legitimate uses for infrastructure improvement. As a result of the Education Stabilization Fund, Hanover County Public Schools will receive about $8.7 million of funding provided through specific requests. Those monies must be spent by Sept. 1, 2023. “There’s a whole list of items the schools could potentially use the money for,” Sumner said. School administrators are obligated to allocate 20 percent or $1.7 million of those funds to address learning loss during the pandemic, and the remainder is slated for social and emotional support for students and the safe reopening of school in the fall. The Hanover County School Board will consider a spending plan

that could address other needs once the funds are allocated. Sumner told supervisors the plan presented is only a preliminary estimate of how the money could be used, and further discussion with the board and flexibility is expected. “These are broad categories and I’m not prepared today to present to you specific plans,” Sumner said. “I’m here to relay information of opportunities where we could be using these funds.” He said the process is ongoing. “I fully intend to have multiple conversations with the board and bringing updates for the several year time horizon of using these funds.” County Administrator John Budesky said the onetime spending allows the county an opportunity to address the nagging problem of poor broadband service in some areas of the county. “These are coming to you as a recommendation of how we would allocate the funds,” Budesky said. “Broadband is probably the number one issue that we hear about from our citizens on a day-to-day basis.” Budesky said attempting to address the problem minus the support of local dollars has been “challenging” and one

better service to our customers and revenues to the commonwealth,” he said. “From conception to completion, this effort was inspired by the imagination and dedication of Virginia ABC employees,” he added. Joe Damico, director of the Department of General Services, said, “It’s been a pleasure working with ABC to bring their vision to life, from the competitive process used

items,” Sumner said. “The main uses for this fund are to address the public health emergency and its response or its negative economic impact on its citizens.” The funding also could cover the county’s government services losses during the pandemic and provide money for infrastructure improvements, including broadband and water and sewer projects. Those funds must be spent by Dec. 31, 2024, but infrastructure projects with contracts in place are allowed an additional 24 months for completion. Sumner presented a list of recommendations for the allocation at last Wednesday’s board meeting, and supervisors subsequently unanimously approved his request to schedule a public hearing. Approximately $2 million of that funding is slated for pandemic response. “We know there are some variants of the disease out there and we don’t know what the fall is going to look like,” Sumner said. “We’re proposing setting aside $2 million for future response and mitigation efforts.” An equal amount could fund efforts to assist citizens

Odles’ business Cool Spring team worships with Lakota model: coffee shop to sweet treats Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE -- What started as a coffee cart and a local coffee shop is spreading its wings into the sweet treats space. Little Bean Coffee Company is opening Graham’s Ice Cream two doors down from its current location in Mechanicsville. “We sat down at the beginning of the year and started working on our 2021 plan,” Jett Odle said. “We talked a lot about who we wanted to be as a company, how we wanted to grow and evolve. The original

conversations really had nothing to do with ice cream.” When brothers Jett and Micah Odle opened Little Bean in October 2019, the hope was to serve high quality coffee and give the community a connective experience. Then Little Bean started roasting its own coffee in the summer of 2020. The goal became to expand the coffee company, and, with the wholesale business growing steadily, they had a lot of room to do just that. They eventually partnered with a West Point ice cream shop in the fall and were adding wholesale accounts at a stable pace.

ASF Scholarship drive a success (Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Lorie Foley on behalf of the officers and board of the Ashland Strawberry Faire.) ASHLAND -- Despite the cancellation of the Ashland Strawberry Faire for the second year, enough money was raised to distribute our scholarships. Every year, the Ashland Strawberry Faire offers scholarships to Hanover County public high school students and one RandolphMacon College student. The Faire Committee was determined to distribute scholarships without dipping into the general funds needed for the 2022 Faire. Creative ideas by the Faire Committee led to fundraising activities such as the Berry Walk, restaurant competition, "Flat Stella" competition, strawberry sales, and Faire swag sales. All of these activities culminated on June 12 in a Celebration at Carter Park. The celebration drew lots

the Scholarship Drive will go to Hanover County students. We made just over our $6,000 goal! “Thanks to the efforts of so many, the Faire was able to make good on our commitment to deliver 10 scholarships to Hanover County students,”

according to Scholarship Chair Betty LaPlace. Ashland Kiwanis Club members received the balance over $6,000 for their scholarship program. They have been an official partner of the Faire for several years.

Restaurant Competition

The Restaurant Competition was very popular among the participating restaurants, as well as the voting public. The “Best Strawberry Drink in Hanover County” went to The Iron Horse Restaurant. Bartender Jessica created the winning strawberry beverage: a Sparkling Strawberry Rose with sweet vermouth & rhubarb bitters. The “Best Strawberry Dessert in Hanover County”

went to Rise & Shine Diner. Their staff created a Strawberry Crunch Cake, which garnered the most votes. Thank you to the restaurants who participated: Ashland Meat Co., Caboose Market & Café, Iron Horse Restaurant, Jake’s Place, Rise & Shine Diner, Sweet Frog COTU and Trackside Grill. purpose, how do you even begin? Admittedly, if it were easy, everyone would already be following some simple set of directions, and there would be little need for speeches such as this one. Unfortunately, it’s not easy. In order to begin determining your why, it may be easier to rule out what will not help you find it. It will not be your career, some level of material wealth, or other extrinsic rewards. As Sheena Amin explains in her 2017 article: “Work challenges you and forces you to think and encourages you to use your talents to improve whatever it is that you’re trying to discover, create, sell, or fix. It helps to mold you into the person that you are, and it is a contributor to who you are. But it does not define who you are.” In other words, what you do

is not who you are. The same can be said about anything that can be measured, evaluated, or have a status applied to it. Finding your why is not about achievement, and that can be one of the most difficult things for some to accept. So, we have established what will not help you in your quest for drive and purpose. Let us turn to what may assist in answering that most complicated of interrogatories, “Why?” There are many who would claim that giving any type of advice on finding your why is a wasted exercise, because for each individual it is a personal journey. A quick Google search will show that others offer 5, 7, or 10 specific pieces of advice to follow. I don’t believe that even Colonel Sanders would have been able to come up with a perfect recipe for finding your why, but I have discovered that there are common threads in every socalled expert’s counsel. First, it

has to be relationship centered, and second, if some type of service is at its foundation, you are more likely to have a fulfilled life. Even the most introverted of us is a social being. As the pandemic has illustrated, we all need human contact. It is, quite literally, part of our genetic makeup. It isn’t about the number of friends or the prestige of your social circle, but rather the type of people who surround you. Those who truly have our best interests at heart are not afraid to hold us accountable, and they inspire us. They assist us in becoming the best versions of ourselves and can even help us discover talents and abilities we never knew we possessed. Dr. Adolph Brown, clinical psychologist, author, and speaker, calls these individuals, “balcony people.” He remarks that balcony people “don’t do it for the income.” They “do it for the outcome.” Dr. Brown warns that

unfortunately, there are also “basement people” who can find a problem in every solution, and see a bad seed, rather than the beautiful tree that a single seed can become with the proper nurturing. We need people to help us discover our why, but they must be the right people. One of the many downfalls of this pandemic has been the lack of human interaction. Is it really any wonder that some feel we have never been more polarized than we are today? Civility is needed more than ever, and yet it can only be developed through taking the time to interact with others in an authentic way. Balcony people help us in developing that, and in doing so often peel back the curtain showing us our why. In order to become a balcony person yourself, it is critical that service to others is a key component of your life. Of course, it feels good to do good, but serving others has actually been linked to several

health benefits. In fact, it has been proven to help you live longer. More importantly, it gives more meaning to those years, and makes them happier, more fulfilled years. As Arthur Sheldon put it, “He profits most who serves best.” While it may seem counterintuitive for some, we do in fact end up gaining more when we give. It is in the giving that we often find our passion, our calling, our purpose, our … why. When we see the good we are able to do, it is no longer a sacrifice we are making, rather it becomes an outward expression of what is important to us. That expression not only reveals our capabilities to others, but can help us learn about ourselves. I can’t tell you what your why is, and neither can the person to your left or right. It is as unique as the name on the diploma you are about to receive. There are practices and habits though that will help you discover it. It

can be hard work, but you are already used to that. In fact, you have put in 13 years of hard work to get you to this stage you are about to cross. That work has been worth it, because it has laid a solid foundation on which you can build your future success. As you go forth from here and build that success brick by brick, make sure that your time is spent not solely on racing up the proverbial ladder as fast as you can, but also in making sure that your journey is one that leaves people better because you have been in their lives. In doing so, you may just discover … your why. Congratulations, Class of 2021! You have had one of the most unique high school experiences in history. Use it to make your equally unique mark on the world and in the hearts of those who know you. It has been a sincere privilege to watch you get to this point. I cannot wait to see where you go from here.

of the GMC begin to collapse in under their own weight. The collapse is no uniform, and the cloud can fragment into smaller pieces, each of which can continue to collapse independently. As you know, falling objects accelerate, gaining kinetic energy as they go faster. (Energy is conserved – the gain in kinetic energy is at

the expense of lost potential energy.) More kinetic energy in the gas means higher temperature, which in turn means higher pressure. Collapse slows in the inner part of the cloud while the outer parts are still in free fall. As the temperature and pressure in the core rises it reaches a point where it’s too hot for

molecules. They “dissociate” into individual atoms, which momentarily takes energy out of the gas -- so it cools and loses pressure, ironically accelerating the core’s collapse. Hotter still and the atoms ionize. Hotter still (about 20 million kelvins) and the hydrogen nuclei begin to undergo fusion into helium in the inner 10%

of what we now can call a protostar. We have now arrived at the “zero age main sequence” and our star is born! The new star dissipates the surrounding cocoon of gas and dust and we suddenly see the various fragments as separate stars shining on their own. The Orion Nebula is a nearby (about 1500

light years) star forming region which you can see with your own eyes as the middle “star” in the sword of this familiar constellation. You can see here the hot young stars and the remnant of the cloud from which they formed only a few million years ago. Lunar phases for July: Last

Mercury will be visible in predawn twilight this month, reaching its greatest western elongation on the 4th. Venus and Mars are visible in evening twilight. Look for them about 20 degrees above the western horizon after sunset. Venus will be very bright, just below and to the right of Mars. Jupiter and Saturn are both vis-

ible most of the night. Saturn rises around 9 p.m. and will be due south at 2 a.m. Jupiter rises an hour later and crosses the meridian around 4 a.m. At mid-month about three hours after sunset, the constellation Lyra and its brightest star Vega mark the zenith sky. To the southeast, about 40 degrees from Vega (50 degrees

above the horizon) is Altair, also known as alpha Aquilae – the brightest star in the constellation Aquila, the Eagle. Deneb in Cygnus is to the northeast about 60 degrees above the horizon. These three stars mark the Summer Triangle, and they are visible virtually all night as the sky appears to rotate over our part of the globe. Ursa Major

is to the northwest, with the familiar “pointer stars” in the bowl of the “Big Dipper” allow your eye to follow their line up to Polaris, which marks the approximate north pole of the celestial sphere. The “handle” of the Dipper can be followed back to the west to find Arcturus, in the constellation Bootes. To the northeast Casseiopia looks like

a crooked “W” on the sky. As you notice Mars to the west, you’ll also see its “rival” Antares to the southwest in the constellation Scorpio. we started talking about why we wanted to expand. If our aim is to serve the community, which opportunity would best help us achieve that goal?” The team eventually concluded that an ice cream shop would be the best option for the next step, expanding on their success as coffee connoisseurs and building on their goal to

continue to serve their community, but with a sweet twist. “Little Bean is designed to be a place where our community can come to focus, gather, and connect,” Odle said. “Coffee shops should be relatively quiet places, with great atmospheres for studying, reading, and focusing. We wanted to create a place that

was designed to be loud, fun, and boisterous, a place where a large group or a family could gather and have fun together.” Graham’s Ice Cream is scheduled to open by the end of July 2021. They will serve a wide variety of options, including classic ice cream scoops into bowls and cones, multiple toppings offerings,

a fun twist on the traditional sundae, and a plethora of milkshake options. “We are excited to serve this community in a whole new way,” Odle said. “One of the best parts of being a small business is our ability to work with our customers to tailor our offerings to match what they are craving. We want our

community to share a part in creating Graham’s, so we would love any ideas or recommendations from anyone and everyone.” Want to share your ideas or recommendations? Check out Graham’s on their Facebook or Instagram page, or send them an email at ideas@grahamsicecream.com.

source told The Mechanicsville Local that the county had not qualified for state grants regarding broadband funding for localities. “This is an opportunity for us to use these one-time funds, not only in the amount of just shy of $17 million but we will be able to leverage state funds and potentially federal funds to make that $17 million go much further on behalf of our residents,” Budesky said. “This will be the biggest one-time infusion that we will ever have

For example, a music event with vendors and tomato tastings is planned for Pole Green Park on July 1 and Courthouse

There is no joy in Mechanicsville Hanover baseball, softball strike out in Class 4 state championship games By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor

By Rob Witham for The Local

ASHBURN – Hanover pitcher Levi Huesman went the distance in the VHSL Class 4 state championship game at Broad Run Saturday. He matched Spartan starter in giving up just one hit. He gave up just one earned run, compared with two for Hale. He walked three batters as opposed to six, struck out six batters as opposed to five, and gave up no home runs while Hale gave up on. On paper, that should have added up to a win in what was a gem of a pitchers’ duel. But it wasn’t. Three Hanover errors yielded two unearned runs as Broad Run, which took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and held on for a 3-2 win and the state title. “Levi threw great, Levi did everything we needed him to do on the mound today,” said Hanover head coach Tyler Kane. “It was just one of those days when the ball just doesn’t bounce your way. We hit some hard baseballs right at people, and they found a way to manufacture one more run than we did.” Broad Run’s two-run second inning began with the Spartans’ only hit, a double to left field by Tyler Morley. Joseph Morley bunted into a fielder’s choice, and an error on the play allowed Morley to advance to third and

The two-running inning was a rare burst of offence against Broad Run’s Hale. “He’s got three pitches for a strike,” Kane said. “He’s tough holding runners. He throws three pitches for a strike.

MECHANICSVILLE – All season long, during a 15-game winning streak that brought the Hanover Hawks softball team to its first Virginia High School League state title game in 14 years, it relied on the superior pitching of sophomore Julia Cuozzo, timely hitting, and tough defense. Saturday night, hosting Amherst County, opportunities on the base paths passed Hanover by, and, in one extra inning, their defense fell apart, opening the door for the Lancers to win the Class 4 state title with a 2-0 victory. “That’s very uncharacteristic of us,” said Hanover head coach Michael Rohr after his final meeting with the team after the game. “I wasn’t prepared for that speech. I had to make it up as I went.” Hanover (15-1) seized momentum early, as Cuozzo struck out the first nine batters she faced, the final three of them after a 52-minute rain delay forced the tarp onto the field and a sea of volunteers helped to get it game-ready once again. In the fourth, the Lancers got their first hit, a two-out double from K.K. Ramsey. Cuozzo calmly fanned the next batter, bringing the Hawks up for

what turned out to be their best chance to score. With one out, a pair of walks to Bella Pastore and Lilly Parrish brought up Reagan Hill, who popped out to catcher Maddie Jennings. Amherst starter Dylan McNerney, who struck out 10, issued a walk to Cuozzo to load the bases, but Jenna Currie popped out to shortstop to end the threat. On the night, the Hawks stranded seven runners, and had an eighth thrown out to end the third inning while trying to advance to third base on a bunt. Cuozzo and McNerney matched each other pitch for pitch, combining for 27 strikeouts. Cuozzo ended the night with 17, only allowing three hits, while McNerney surrendered just two: an Alyssa Broaddus single in the third, and a double from Beanie Acors to lead off the fifth. Hawks prey on Menchville mistakes By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE — Hanover’s baseball team advanced to the Virginia High School League Class 4 state title game with a 10-0 thrashing of visiting Menchville in a Class 4 semifinal Tuesday. The Hawks wasted no time pouncing on the Monarchs’ mistakes. Mechville starting pitcher Zach Davis opened the game by hitting three straight Hanover batters to load the bases. Nolan Williamson then hit a single to left field to drive in two runs, and the rout was on. Hanover starting pitcher Seth Keller hit a pair of Menchville batters, but not all at once. He went four innings, striking out nine and giving up two hits and just one other free base on a walk. “My command was a little

Anybody who can do that is going to give himself a shot. “Levi on our side did the same thing. It was a pitchers’ duel. That’s how it always is in this game, it seems.” The Hawks threatened again with two outs in the seventh. Charlie Rohr hit a hard ground ball to first base, but

Flicker bobbled it and Rohr, finding Hale blocking his path, shoved the pitcher out of the way to get to the bag. “He’s got a right to first base. It was just one of those things where the pitcher was coming over to cover,” Kane said. “Hale was going hard to the ball and Charlie was going hard to first base.” Rohr was subbed by pinch runner Chase Flora, and Hale, one out shy of a complete game,

was relieved by left-hander Ethan Walker. Designated hitter Cole Elrod worked the count to 3-2 before Walker picked Flora off at first to end the game. “The lefty’s got a really good move over to first base,” Kane said. “It was just one of those things where he came over with his best move.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

We couldn’t have asked for a more responsive, knowledgeable, and understanding realtor. First he was amazing in the selling process of our first home. He was able to educate us and teach us the ropes of selling and purchasing. This was followed up 6 months later with our new home. Erik and his team gave us the opportunity to get the home of our dreams, well before we expected it to happen. I would recommend him to anyone buying a home in the Richmond and surrounding areas.

Buying your first home can be a stressful ordeal, but Erik made the process as stress free and exciting as possible. His main focus is you, the customer. He listens to your needs and will work 200% to ensure you get the results you desire. In order to get the best, you have to work with the beast and Erik is without a doubt the best Realtor out there. He is committed, knowledgeable and most important always readily available. You will not be disappointed.

Local knowledge Process expertise Responsiveness Negotiation Skills Erik went above and beyond to help us find a new home when a sudden job change moved us away. His estimations were spot on and his extensive experience made for a seamless home selling and buying experience. He did an outstanding job negotiating on our behalf and handling the details so we could focus on our personal logistics of uprooting and moving our family to a new location. His genuine personal investment and enthusiasm was apparent throughout the entire process and we cannot recommend him highly enough!
