The Mechanicsville Local June 8, 2022
While a side job can be a great opportunity to make extra money, be aware of fake opportunities that may be a trap. The scammers may look for an opportunity for identity theft, a fake check scam and more.
Ways to avoid falling victim to job scams: Screen potential clients: Get to know a client before agreeing to do any work. Watch out for the “too good to be true” job postings: If it sounds out of this world, it’s often a scam. Research side jobs before applying: Go directly to the company’s website and verify the job posting. Be cautious of fake checks: The employer may offer a position and only say they will send a check for needed supplies before work begins. They may “overpay” and ask to have some of the funds sent back in the form of gift cards, which can lead to the realization that the check deposited was fake. Never pay to work: A fee should never have to be paid to apply for a job or to get a position. A legitimate company won’t pay a new employee anything before they begin work. Get all the details in writing before starting a position: Know what one is signing up for before putting pen to paper. Guard personal information: Be sure it is a legitimate business before handing over personal or sensitive information.
