Mustang baseball ekes out win at Atlee

By Rob Witham for Th e Local

MECHANICSVILLE — When opportunity presents itself, be ready.

In a game that mirrored the two participants’ seasons thus far, the Mechanicsville Mustangs took full advantage of their opportunity, while the Atlee Raiders did not, resulting in a come-from-behind 6-4 win at Atlee Friday night to move the Mustangs to 8-2.

“We knew it was going to be a battle,” said Mechanicsville head coach Tyler Johnson. “We’ve been in dogfights all week. We were both hungry to get back on the field. They played well, and we played well. We just did a few more things than they did.”

For the Mustangs, it was a matter of not getting down on yourself after watching the Raiders grab a lead that had been held by the Mustangs since the top of the third inning.

Mechanicsville scrapped and clawed its way to a 3-0 lead, beginning with back-toback bunts by Grayson Moore and C.J. DiNapoli which placed each on base. Ethan Serrano’s single scored Moore, then an RBI fielder’s choice from Cam Lamb scored DiNapoli.

Aaron Maxie completed the scoring with a sacrifice fly to plate Serrano. It was 3-0 Mustangs. But just as Atlee starter John Best had his struggles in the top of the frame, Mechanicsville’s Sam Owens fought through the bottom of the inning, as the Raiders

answered.

Catcher Chase Chamberlain doubled, then pinch runner Miguel Montoya advanced to third on a Mechanicsville error. With two in scoring position, Landon Scott’s sacrifice fly scored Montoya, and Gunnar Stromberg’s single over third base plated Chase Sanford. After three innings, the Mechanicsville lead was 3-2.

In the fifth, Owens walked two batters and hit another. With the bases jammed, Nathan Westfall took the hill. Stromberg was ready for him, as his two-RBI single gave the Raiders a 4-3 advantage, their first lead of the night. Another walk loaded the bases again, but Westfall got out of the jam, which proved to be a pivotal moment in the game.

Mechanicsville’s answer in the sixth inning was three runs thanks to a Serrano sacrifice fly, a Lamb single, and an Atlee error on a fly ball to left field. Now it was time to finish, and Johnson turned to a familiar face.

Longwood commit Dallas Hairfield toed the rubber for the final two innings. He cruised in the sixth but lost a battle with Sanford to open the seventh, as Chase fouled off pitch after pitch, then sent a single up the middle.

Hairfield answered with two strikeouts. But Bronson Davis singled, and the potential winning run came to the plate. The Mustang veteran, however, stood firm, earning a final strikeout and the victory for the Mustangs.

“Once we took the lead, Dallas was our man because he wants the ball in that situation,” Johnson explained. “He’s been building all year, learned a lot already, and 10 games in, he’s been in some big situations.”

For Atlee, now 3-6, the loss ended a two-night period of heartbreak, after dropping a 2-1 extra-inning affair Thursday against upstart Varina. With the top 12 teams out of 17 in Region 4B qualifying for the postseason, the losses, while hurting the Raiders’ playoff chances, will also give the squad motivation as they move forward with home contests Thursday against Henrico and Friday versus Hanover.

For the Mustangs, the win keeps them within striking distance of current region leader King George, just behind Chancellor and with Hanover breathing down their neck. Johnson is thankful for the 8-2 start but knows there is plenty of baseball to be played.

“I thought tonight was our best offensive night, one through nine,” Johnson said. “If we can continue to build on that, I can’t wait until game 15, game 20.”

After playing game 11 against Highland Springs Monday, game 12 sends the Mustangs to their oldest rival, Patrick Henry, on Friday.

Hawks sweep diamonds at Patrick Henry

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor

ASHLAND — Hanover’s baseball and softball teams wanted to keep the drama down when the Hawks visited Patrick Henry Friday night.

To make sure that happened, they dominated the Patriots on their respective diamonds. On the softball diamond, the Hawks downed a scrappy Patrick Henry team 8-0. On the baseball diamond, the Hawks thrashed the Patriots 16-1 in a five-inning beatdown.

In the latter, Hanover hammered its way through five Patrick Henry pitchers, picking up 14 hits along the way. Hanover head baseball coach Tyler Kane said the Patriot pitchers were tough, but the Hawks, after facing some of the top pitching in the nation during a spring break tournament in North Carolina at the beginning of April, have good approaches at the plate.

“Patrick Henry has Patrick Brizendine. He’s a junior lefty and he’s really tough. He throws mid-80s with a really good changeup and curveball,” Kane said. “But he threw the night before, and so Sammy (Sam Hart, Patrick Henry’s head coach) staffed the game against us. He had some guys that were really competitive — low 80s, decent breaking stuff.

“Our guys had a really good approach throughout the game. We were hunting fastballs and we challenged them to just be on time with whatever they were looking for. I guess our guys executed the plan and squared up some baseballs.”

Brett Alvis did most of the squaring, accounting for four of those Hawk hits — one a double — and five RBIs. Seth Keller hit a home run with four RBIs.

Hanover’s softball team won by a lopsided score, but the game was anything but. The Patriots were scrappy but could not string together enough hits to bring in some runs.

“They put the ball in play pretty well against Julia [Cuzzo],” said Hanover head softball coach Tommy Evans. “They were very scrappy. … But we’re not going to give up but so many runs with our defense and our pitching. It’s nice to go out and score eight runs, but if we score two or three, we’re also pretty confident that we’re going to do enough to win.”

Cuzzo struck out 10 Patriot batters. Alex Currie hit a home run, Emma Slutzah had a hit and three RBIs, and Lily Parrish went 2-of-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI for Hanover.

‘Mo’ favors Hawks early, Patriots late in draw

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor

ASHLAND — “Mo,” or momentum, was a fickle friend Friday night when Hanover’s boys soccer team traveled to Patrick Henry’s pitch for a rivalry-night contest.

“Mo” favored the Hawks in the first 20 minutes of regulation play. Then “Mo” switched allegiances, favoring Patrick Henry the final 20 minutes of regulation play. “Mo” proved totally apathetic in two fiveminute overtimes, leaving the two rivals with a 2-2 draw.

“Typical Hanover rivalry soccer,” is how Patrick Henry head boys soccer coach Chuck Altizer described it.

“We have a problem with Patrick Henry,” said Hanover head boys soccer coach Laurent Body. “Every time we come here it’s real intense.”

The Hawks started strong at

the opening whistle, and took the lead on a goal by Markus Niepraschk. But the advantage didn’t faze the Patriots.

Even when Hanover took a 2-0 lead on a header off a

corner kick by Addison Rogers in the second half, the Patriots weren’t fazed. They continued

to give as good as they got.

That determined effort paid off late in regulation. First, Patrick Henry striker Anthony Espana got past a Hawk defender in the box and sent a kick across from the right side of the Hawk goal, past a diving Hanover keeper Mitchell Palmgren just over the line into the right side of the net.

Minutes later, Patriot Gregory Cofer fired through a crowd to make it 2-2.

Both teams had their share of shots and saves in the two five-minute overtimes, but neither could avoid a draw.

All three keepers who played — Sam Castle and Palmgren for Hanover, Mason Dycus for Patrick Henry — stayed busy. Castle finished with seven saves for the Hawks, as did Dycus for the Patriots. Palmgren made eight saves for Hanover.

“I think our teams know each other so well that every game’s going to be a battle like this,” Altizer said.

Sanders helped her cause with a triple. Savannah Nash knocked in a run for the Raiders, who only managed three hits off of Mustang starter Kiley Lamberth, who gave up only four hits and one earned run.

The Mustangs committed four errors, leading to three unearned Atlee runs.

Mechanicsville was led by Kendall Wilkinson, who went 2-of-3 with a double and the Mustangs’ sole run. Leanna Bartrug also had a double for Mechanicsville.

Local athletes earn titles at Mustang meet

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor

MECHANICSVILLE — Hanover’s Deonte Harris and Jaelynn Joiner hit their respective strides for the heart of the outdoor track and field season with three wins apiece in the Mechanicsville Invitational at Mechanicsville High School Friday and Saturday.

“It was a good meet. It was smaller than in years past, but we had some kids really step up,” said Hanover head track and field coach Rich Firth. “In particular, Deonte Harris Jr. won the triple jump, the high jump, and the 100[-meter] hurdles and now has the fastest hurdle time in Class 4. It was an impressive day.

“Then Jaelynn Joiner, a freshman — Makenzie’s younger sister — won the long jump, just over 17 feet … then won the 400 and ran a really fast 200, 25.75 I believe. That was pretty impressive. Ethan Coleman won the 800, ran a 1:56, the fastest in Class 4 thus far.”

Harris won the boys 110meter hurdles in 15.27 seconds. He cleared 6 feet in the high jump and 41 feet, 1 inch in the triple jump. Joiner, whose sister Makenzie now competes for William and Mary, actually won the girls 200 dash in 25.74. The runner-up in that race, James River’s Lilly Ver Beek, who bested Joiner in the preliminaries, finished in 25.75. Joiner finished the 400 in 1:01.54 and cleared 17 feet, 2.75 inches in the long jump.

Atlee’s Jada Foreman won a pair of events: the girls 100 dash and 300 hurdles. She finished the 100 in 12.55 and 300 hurdles in 46 seconds. Her teammate Patrick Allen won the 3,200 run in 9:24.56. The Raider boys had two relay winners. The 4x100 team won its race in 43.34 seconds. The 4x400 team of earned a win with a time of 3:29.02. Mechanicsville’s boys 4x100 team finished second.

Mustang Blake Moody won the boys 200 dash in 21.98.

Firth said the less-freneticthan-usual atmosphere helped his athletes stay focused.

“It was actually low key. I think it took some of the pressure off our kids,” Firth said. “We haven’t gone to a lot of meets yet, so it was a nice way to ease into the invitational season
