Local student a semifinalist in Presidential Scholars Program

Cordelia Crawford, a graduating senior at Hanover High School in Mechanicsville, VA has been named one of 628 semifinalists in the 2023 U.S. Presidential Scholars program. The semifinalists were selected from more than 5,000 candidates expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2023. Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 59th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of their accomplishments in many areas – academic and artistic success, accomplishment in career and technical fields, leadership, strong character and involvement in school and the community.

An International Baccalaureate diploma candidate, Cordelia is currently serving as the Vice President of Integrated Marketing on the Virginia DECA State Action Team. Last year she was president of the Hanover DECA chapter.

During the summer of 2021, she attended Regional Governor’s School for Career and Technical Advancement Program where she earned a certificate of leadership and led her team to win the Best Marketing Plan and the overall shark tank competition.

A Gold Award recipient, Cordelia is also founder and president of the Hanover Environmental Club. She is part of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Student Leadership Program and Watershed Outdoor Bill of Rights committee. She attended the James River Associations’ Leadership Academy and volunteered with the Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps.

In the fall, Cordelia will attend the Clarks Honors College at University of Oregon where she plans to double major in environmental studies and business. But first she will attend a UO study abroad program in London in August to study global business and leadership.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors for their accomplishments in academics, leadership and service to school and community.
