President’s Letter

Tempus Fugit By Stephen J. Ezzo, MD

“Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be” — Robert Browning

I

always have struggled with the concept of aging. Not so much in others, as in myself. I tend to revert to my usual coping mechanism when confronted with unpleasant things – I ignore them. With a little luck, they will go away. The signs certainly are there, though. My first step to the bucket is much less explosive. Despite advanced technology and computer graphics, my golf ball does not appear to travel as far (except, of course, when it is sailing majestically out of bounds), and at times I blank on a certain medication if I have not prescribed it in a while. So, aside such impediments are pushed, hopefully not to rear their annoying heads anytime soon. Call it the Peter Pan syndrome. But what truly confounds me is the dawning realization that I am part of the “old guard” in our medical community. I’m fairly certain I was a resident at Charlotte Memorial Hospital just the other day, with Dr. Valya Visser giving me her blessing and sending me into the real world. (I hope I have made you proud, Val. I miss you.) Okay, I’m older, but president of MCMS? Shouldn’t that position be reserved, like department chairs and committee heads, for the generation (or two) older than me? Though I have held a few chairmanships and leadership roles, I’m quite certain they were either a result of default or aberrancy. Still, here I am. To quote the Talking Heads, “You might ask yourself, ‘Well, how did I get here?’” Don’t get me wrong – I am honored and humbled to be president of your Medical Society, and I will do my best to represent all of you well. It is a wonderful organization with a dedicated staff, providing many opportunities for its members (more on that later). My executive team (Really? Mine?) includes the best and brightest colleagues, who time and again put aside their busy schedules to do the work their office requires of them. Yet, I cannot escape a tinge of bemusement. I believe one of the more taxing prospects of this role will be coming up with topics for my monthly article. How do I strike the balance wherein what I write is both pertinent and deserving of your attention? Not that I don’t enjoy writing – more on that much later – but rather, I fear coming up short when compared to my predecessors. To recap just the last few, there was Dr. Huff and her ability to get to the heart of a matter instantly, asking the relevant questions; Dr. Hall and his acerbic wit and cogent explanations of complex issues; and Dr. Ward, folksy as always, making associations that were simultaneously amusing and logical. I wonder if the only thing I have in common with them is the number of letters in our surnames. What I have decided – subject to change and whimsy of course – is to reflect on 30 years in medicine (or 50+ as the son of a physician) and lessons learned, opinions forged, passions uncovered. Some will be very personal, others more general in nature. I am not sure anyone needs to hear my thoughts on the ACA or EHR or insurance companies – and frankly, I do not think I can say anything better than what already has been said on these pages. I will, however, take this opportunity to revisit a common theme for the MCMS: advocacy.

For those of you wanting to engage in the political process, or merely seeking to become more informed, the MCMS constantly is fielding requests from our legislators, both local and at the state level, to meet with members to discuss and learn about healthcare issues. If there is someone you would like to speak with, or a subject in particular in which sharing your expertise would be helpful, please let us know and we will assist you. This is an opportunity to go beyond your patients and effect positive change for your community. Having a bully pulpit can be a scary proposition ... especially for the readers.

In honor of outgoing MCMS President Sandy Ward, I will continue with monthly trivia questions, although this year’s will have a medical bent. See page 6 for the answer. Question: Who was Edward Jenner?

Trivia answer from page 5: Edward Jenner was an English physician, who is considered the father of vaccinology. He noticed that people infected with cowpox, a mild illness, did not get infected with smallpox. In 1796, he withdrew some fluid from a pustule of a milk maid infected with cowpox (the cow she milked, named Blossom, lives on in infamy as her hide is displayed in St. George’s medical school), and injected the fluid into the 8-year-old son of his gardener (I am quite certain there was no informed consent back then). Weeks later, he injected the boy again with fluid from a smallpox lesion. The boy did not contract smallpox. Thus was born the age of vaccines (from the Latin vaca, for cow).

Fighting for Women With Fashion 2015 By Mary T. Crowder, MD Planning Committee Co-Chair

On October 6, members of the Women Physicians Section of the Mecklenburg County Medical Society (MCMS), along with members of the Charlotte Women Attorneys, hosted the fifth annual “Fighting for Women With Fashion” at the Foundation for the Carolinas in uptown Charlotte. More than 300 guests enjoyed delicious food by Best Impressions and wine from Common Market, along with this year’s addition of beer from Olde Mecklenburg Brewery. The 12 female models and eight male models were members of the MCMS or the Charlotte Bar. They graced the runway with fashions from Nordstrom and Kendra Scott, our new jewelry fashion partner this year. The silent auction, raffle and new addition of a wine pull, together with generous donations from 36 sponsors, four friends of the event and our patrons in attendance, raised $52,729.42 for Safe Alliance and the Clyde and Ethel Dickson Domestic Violence Shelter in Charlotte. To date, we have raised more than $180,000 to help build the shelter, establish an onsite medical clinic and provide other ongoing services to local victims. A big thank you to this year’s MCMS physician models: Laura Danile, MD; Erin Goshorn, MD; Monique May, MD; Leybelis Padilla, MD; Rhonda Patt, MD; Gena Walker, MD; Ricardo Caicedo, MD; Peter Capizzi, MD; Cary Fishburne, MD; Kevin Hsu, MD; and Bernard Taylor, MD. To all our sponsors, event patrons, in-kind sponsors and the staff of Safe Alliance, thank you for helping us host another very successful event. If you missed the event this year, look for us in October 2016 when we hope to raise even more money for this wonderful cause. We encourage you to be a sponsor, attend and even try “strutting your stuff” on the runway! It is truly a night of fun and fashion for a most worthy cause! 10 | January 2016 • Mecklenburg Medicine

MMAE

Dear Friends,

As we welcome a new year, I want to reflect on the projects MMAE has been instrumental in throughout our history. In 2002-2003, MMAE awarded the Mecklenburg County Medical Society a grant of $35,000 to study the medical needs of the poor and uninsured in Mecklenburg County. Using the information collected in the study, the Medical Society researched the best approach to meeting these needs and determined it would be better to see these patients in private offices, rather than in free-standing clinics. John Klimas, MD, chaired the Medical Society’s Physicians Reach Out (PRO) Committee. He and his committee recruited 1,600 physicians to participate, as well as Novant Health and Carolinas HealthCare System, to provide laboratory services, radiology and reduced hospital fees for PRO patients. Since its inception, MMAE has continued to award grants to PRO. Monies from MMAE have been used for everything from translation services to patient services, as well as patient education. In 2008, the administration of PRO moved from the Medical Society to Care Ring, which screens potential patients, serves as a referral service, provides patient education and raises financial support. To date, PRO has provided more than $100 million in healthcare services to the poor and uninsured. In a very direct way, MMAE has provided initial and continued support to the largest and one of the most successful safety net health programs in the state of North Carolina. Our January program, titled “UV Is Not Your Friend! Protect the Skin You’re In!” will have important information concerning the risks of developing skin cancer. Come learn how researchers in the Charlotte area are leading the fight against melanoma. The program will be January 14 at 9:30 a.m. at The Duke Mansion. To reserve your spot, go to mmaeonline.com. Make sure to put March 10 on your calendars for the next Community Health Classroom. The Classroom will be held once again at Myers Park Country Club. Our topic this year will be “Unlocking the Mysteries of Autism and Autism Spectrum.” Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.

Drug that Counteracts OpioidRelated Overdoses Is Now Available at Walgreens Naloxone is a drug that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. Until recently, Naloxone has been hard to get in Mecklenburg County, but now the Walgreens at 8538 N. Tryon St. in Charlotte will carry the medication over the counter. This new offering is available thanks to the partnership between Walgreens and Carolinas HealthCare System. Working together, they’ve set up this first-in-the-state Naloxone program to provide an effective resource for opioid users. North Carolina has been one of the early adopters of Naloxone use as a harm-reduction tactic in the South. According to an article in N.C. Health News, “At least 792 people in North Carolina unintentionally overdosed from opioids in 2012, a number that has decreased since a peak death toll of 836 in 2008. Naloxone advocates say distribution of the medication has played a part in that decrease, along with efforts to educate doctors on better prescription habits for opiates and efforts to educate people in the community about naloxone.”

The award honors one outstanding American family physician who provides patients with compassionate, comprehensive care, and serves as a role model in his or her community and to other health professionals. n

in the Kansas City area. She re-enrolled in college to complete the necessary science courses, took the Medical College Admission Test and was accepted at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Determined to become a family physician, Murphy graduated in 1985 with her medical degree and an award for Outstanding Student in Family Practice. It was her acceptance into the Duke University Family Medicine Residency Program that brought her to North Carolina, where she has remained since completing residency in 1988. Murphy is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and has the AAFP Degree of Fellow, an earned degree awarded to family physicians for distinguished service and continuing medical education. Orthopedic Trauma Surgeon Helps RESTORE Central America Joseph R. Hsu, MD, orthopedic trauma surgeon at Carolinas Medical Center, is helping bring hospitals in Central America sustainable surgical capabilities through the organization, RESTORE

n

(Reconstructive Surgery and Transmission of Operative Resources). Dr. Hsu founded and is director of RESTORE, which aims to enhance the resource-limited Central American hospital in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, through a combination of education and volunteer efforts. RESTORE began in 2011 as part of philanthropic “medical readiness missions” that were carried out by the United States Army at Hospital Escuela in Tegucigalpa. Hsu’s inspiration for developing RESTORE stemmed from his experiences in helping injured civilians during his deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan in 2006, and from mission trips to Hospital Escuela. Hospital Escuela, a community hospital and trauma center, has about 15,000 trauma admissions each year. Over the past three years, with support from Carolinas HealthCare System’s International Medical Outreach Program, RESTORE has evolved to include a focus on limb reconstruction work, which is one of Hsu’s areas of surgical expertise. He received training for reconstruction techniques in Italy and Russia, using the “Ilizarov method” of bone regeneration to lengthen or reshape bone and soft tissue. For more information about RESTORE, visit http://heineman.org/restore-central-america/.
