TAUPŌ

A place to connect with the land in mind and body

With breathtaking views of New Zealand’s largest freshwater lake, rugged volcanic landscapes, world-class fishing spots, and the iconic crystal-blue Huka Falls, Taupō is a haven of natural beauty.

Explore the region’s rolling green countryside, majestic mountain vistas, peaceful native bush, and some of the largest pine forests in the Southern Hemisphere. Whether you’re chasing adventure or serenity, Taupō’s unique blend of natural wonders and diverse activities make it the ultimate playground.

Taupō’s charming town centre offers a vibrant mix of gourmet dining, casual cafes, and upscale restaurants, perfect for indulging your taste buds. Spend a relaxed day exploring art galleries, craft shops, and the shops and boutique stores, all just a stroll from the lake’s edge. Accommodation options abound near the water, and an array of recreational activities ensure there’s always something to do. Known as New Zealand’s events capital, Taupō buzzes year-round with an exciting calendar of festivals, sports events, and cultural showcases.

Venture beyond the town centre to uncover Taupō’s surrounding treasures. To the west, Acacia Bay and Kinloch charm with their tranquil beauty, while the Western Bays offer dramatic lake vistas.

Or further south to Tūrangi, the gateway to Tongariro National Park, where epic adventures and breathtaking landscapes await.

Whether you prefer a peaceful lake cruise or an adrenaline-pumping white-water adventure, Taupō has something for everyone. Take it all in and experience this magical destination like a local.

Taupō’s tranquil beauty hides an extraordinary geothermal history. The lake sits in the caldera of a volcano that began erupting around 300,000 years ago, shaped by the massive Oruanui eruption

27,000 years ago. This eruption ejected 750 cubic kilometres of ash and pumice, forming the lake’s dramatic surroundings.

Around 1,800 years ago, the Taupō eruption— one of the largest volcanic events in history— blanketed 20,000 square kilometres in pumice, felling forests and turning skies red as far away as Rome and China.

Today, Taupō’s geothermal legacy lives on. Discover bubbling geothermal wonderlands, dip your toes into warm hotspots around the lake, or unwind in naturally heated, mineral-rich hot pools. With steam rising from the land and water, you’ll feel the powerful connection to the earth’s fiery past.

TAUPŌ’S BUCKET LIST ADVENTURES

MUST SEE - MUST DO

The Taupō region is full of amazing experiences to discover, but if you’re short on time or looking for the quintessential Taupō adventure, here are a few to add to your must-do list.

Huka Falls

Vivid blue waters and thundering cascades make Huka Falls a mesmerising, memorable experience. This breath-taking 11 metre waterfall erupts from a natural gorge, barrelling into the Waikato River below. It’s also the most visited and photographed natural attraction in New Zealand – you’ll know why when you see it for yourself. Every angle provides a spectacle, with multiple viewpoints to look out from. And you’ll hear the falls well before you see them, as nearly a quarter of a million litres of water plummet down the waterfall every second.

Aratiatia Rapids

Adventure further down the Waikato River and discover the stunning transformation of the Aratiatia Rapids Three times a day in winter and four in summer, nearby Aratiatia Dam opens its gates and sends thousands of litres of water coursing down. Get there early before the dam gates open while the gully is peaceful, and watch it transform into churning, raging rapids before your eyes. The whole family will love this unique experience.

Waikato River Float

On a hot summer’s day, you can spot hundreds of visitors and locals alike gently floating down the Waikato River in rafts, inflatable rings, boats, and kayaks. Grab your floaty or inflatable and soon you too can be enjoying the peace and serenity of the river. Park a pick-up car at Hipapatua Reserve, drive to the Gates Park carpark and hop in at the calm river opening straight over the field. Wear a life jacket and be careful not to miss the exit and end up going over the Huka Falls!

Pureora Forest Park

From day trips to overnight stays in a Department of Conservation hut, Pureora offers great walks as well as cycle trails. Waihora Lagoon (730m/15 mins) is a short, family-friendly walk threading through tall rimu and kahikatea trees to the namesake lagoon, a small and serene rain-fed lake surrounded by swamp forest. Rimu Walk (1.7km/1hr) is an easy loop walk taking you from the end of Kakaho Road through dense rimu forest abundant with rich birdlife.

Māori Rock Carvings

One of New Zealand’s most extraordinary cultural artworks, the Mine Bay Māori Rock Carving s are a sight to see, whether by boat or by kayak. Towering 14 metres above Lake Taupō’s deep waters, these contemporary carvings by artist Matahi Brightwell have become one of the North Island’s biggest tourist attractions. It’s also a favoured spot among locals for parking up to enjoy some fishing or water sports.

Trout Fishing

The trout are not allowed to be sold, so the only way to taste a brown or rainbow trout is to catch one yourself. If you’re fortunate to catch one, some Taupō restaurants are happy to cook your catch for you – just be sure to call in advance and remember to take your fishing licence with you.

Mount Ruapehu

Hit the snow in winter or see the sights in summer! For snow bunnies, the Whakapapa and Tūroa ski fields provide the largest commercial skiing and snowboarding area in New Zealand. TONGARIRO NATIONAL PARK

This stunning area of natural beauty is famous for its rugged volcanic scenery, epic hikes, and all-season adventures.

Explore the Volcanic Tapestry

Tongariro National Park, a UNESCO dual World Heritage site in New Zealand’s North Island, is famed for its volcanic landscapes and outdoor adventures. Home to Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro, and Mt Ngauruhoe, it offers incredible experiences like the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, one of New Zealand’s top single-day hikes. Throughout the year, the park offers diverse activities. In summer, hike through emerald lakes and active craters, while winter transforms it into a snowy wonderland, adding both beauty and challenge to the landscape.

Unveiling the Alpine Crossing

Embarking on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is not just a trek; it’s an odyssey through an ever-changing volcanic terrain. The trek can be steep and unpredictable, so be sure to wear proper clothing, suitable footwear, and bring plenty of food and water. The Crossing is possible year-round but take care during winter months as snow adds to the complexity of the challenge—crampons are essential. The famous hike is one-way, starting and ending in different locations. Tongariro Crossing Shuttles based in National Park facilitates seamless transportation for trekkers, offering pick-up and drop-off services and ensuring flexibility for a personalised experience.

Covering 19.4 kilometres over six to eight hours, the Crossing takes explorers on a journey past breathtaking vistas and tackles challenging climbs. The volcanic alpine landscape is dominated by Mt Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro, taking you past spectacular emerald-green alpine lakes, active craters, steaming vents, alpine vegetation, and old lava flows. TONGARIRO CROSSING SHUTTLES offers a return service from National Park timed to give customers the flexibility to do the full day long trek at their own pace. The company also caters for visitors wanting to do the Tongariro Northern Circuit, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks or shorter walks in and around Whakapapa Village.

Beyond the Trails

While hiking takes the spotlight, Tongariro National Park caters to a spectrum of adventurers. Mountain biking enthusiasts can relish the thrill of trails suited for all skill levels. The revered 42nd Traverse, tracing an ancient logging path across 46 kilometres, provides a captivating backdrop of remote landscapes against the park’s mountainous backdrop.

Post-Adventure Bliss

After a day immersed in nature’s wonders, the National Park Village beckons with the promise of relaxation and enjoyment. SCHNAPPS BAR stands as a time-honoured staple popular amongst locals and visitors in the area. They offer panoramic views of the central plateau mountains, open fireplace and delectable meals—a perfect haven for unwinding after a day of exploration or to party après ski.

For a touch of leisurely fun, the 18-hole mini-golf course amidst breathtaking scenery captivates visitors of all ages. This is not merely a destination; it’s an immersive and unforgettable encounter for any outdoor enthusiast. Whether embarking on the iconic Tongariro Alpine Crossing, seeking adventure on the trails, or finding solace in fishing one of the many serene rivers, this slice of New Zealand will remain breathtakingly unforgettable.
