My first tractor was a 1951 John Deere AR that I bought from Bud Hading at his Christmas tree farm. My Friend Scott Anthony and I were driving down the road when we spotted Bud at the end of his driveway putting a for sale sign on the AR. We made a quick U-turn and went back to investigate the deal. At the time I didn’t even know what an AR was, but I liked it. Bud told us stories of how the tractor pulled the hay wagon around every holiday season for the past 30 years. He told us how he and his wife sold Christmas trees out of the back of his station wagon, and like the good old salesman that he was, he reeled us in. A few weeks later I sold the AR at a farm auction and almost doubled my money on the sale. I immediately reinvested and ended up going home from the auction with five tractors. I sold one and bought five – it must be a family tradition.

Over a year later, before the first Gone Farmin’ auction, I received a call from the lady who had purchased the AR. She wanted to see if I was interested in buying it back. She also had a Ferrari and an original A/C Cobra her husband bought new in 1966 that she wanted to sell. I bought the AR back and we sold the cars at our Monterey Auction. I felt lucky to get my first tractor back, but I still put it in the first tractor auction and sold it again. After the auction I started thinking about how it would have been nice to keep my first tractor, and a couple weeks later, I ended up trading tractors to get it back. The AR hadn’t seen much daylight for a couple years, and I decided it was time to let her go. The tractor did a lot for me, and it was time for her to help others. We sold the 1951 John Deere for $15,000 at the Gone Farmin’ Wisconsin

auction August 10th, and if you recall, all that money was donated directly to the Curing Kids Cancer Foundation. Even more important than the amount raised initially, is the fact that the new owner honored my humble request that the tractor continue to give back to the Curing Kids organization each time it changes hands. He consigned the AR for the Iowa Premier, last November 1-2, and donated the $8,500 in proceeds to Curing Kids Cancer, carrying on what could be the start of a great tradition. The AR is now making its return to Davenport, once again set to cross Mecum’s auction block, and once again, promising that all proceeds will go directly to the Curing Kids Cancer foundation. It is my hope that the AR will be able to keep on giving, as it already has, and that it will continue to support this great cause through its next owner. - - Dan Mecum

- Became the best selling tractor in 1914 - The little Bull was the first of it’s kind - The first commercially successful small gas engine tractor - The Little Bull in its flash of brilliance lead to many copies, and you can see the Little Bull’s influence as you look at the evolution of the gas engine tractors - Ron (owner) has a picture of his father Albert, and his uncles John and Lewis with his grandfather’s Little Bull on the family homestead in Roseau, Minnesota, in 1917 - For more than 20 years, Ron researched and looked for a Little Bull just like the one his Grandpa Asle had - In 2000, he found this Little Bull tractor at Oscar Cooke’s Dreamland Museum Auction in Billings, Montana - In 2001 Ron reenacted the photo from 1917 with his brothers John and Lewis - The new photo was taken in the same exact location on the family farm in MN. , Ron middle name is Albert making everyone in the new picture named after someone in the photo taken 84 years earlier 45

The Family Bull Though I am neither a poet nor a journalist, one could easily romanticize the older of the two images below. It is a photo of a stark and difficult time, when men were taming the land. Faces carry very somber expressions, bodies obviously stressed, and souls familiar with hard work. Their labors go beyond what we see at this moment in time. My father Albert, at about age 12, was standing near the front wheel of the Little Bull when this photo was taken on my grandfather’s farm in Roseau, Minnesota, a century ago. My uncles John and Lewis, on the right, stopped for the photo as the two were breaking virgin prairie with the Little Bull and wooden-beam breaking plow. The right side handle shows signs of having been repaired or reinforced. You can see that the men are plowing at a depth of 6 to 8 inches, as the Bull’s patented “leveler” lever is all the way forward, raising the wheel to keep the tractor level on the headland. No provision for a seat can be seen. Apparently, the uncle driving the tractor stood while the other walked in the furrow. Uncle Lewis is standing to the far right. He was drafted into World War I, sent to France, and killed in action near Verdun, approximately one year after this photo was taken. He is buried in a U.S. military cemetery there. This is the last picture we have of him before he went overseas. This photo shows a Little Bull in its best light. One bottom on the plow— rather than the two often promoted in company advertising— would 46

have been about the capacity of this tractor. This was my grandfather’s first tractor, probably purchased at a county fair or other demonstration, but he considered it only a supplement to his team of horses, which he kept for several more years. The men were familiar enough with their tractor that it was shut off to accommodate the photographer, knowing they could restart the hot engine when the photo session was complete. In all likelihood, the tractor was at least two years old when this photo was taken. The end of the Bull Tractor Co. was near, and word was

probably getting around. This group decided one Bull was enough and chose not to turn it in for the new Big Bull. They used their Little Bull until the gearing stripped or the engine wore out, then abandoned it in a fencerow and moved on to other brands and more conventional models. I now own my grandfather’s homestead where this photo was taken. It has been in the Besserud family more than 110 years. Though his tractor is long gone, I found a similar Little Bull—no. 2217, the cover tractor for this issue of Antique Power— a few years

ago. The family held a reunion/celebration in September 2002, and we took this photo of the tractor at the same spot on the farm as the original. I am standing where my father stood, and I have my brothers, John and Lewis, stationed in our uncles locations. We are all named after the people in this photo. (My middle name is Albert.) Although the woods seen in the background are different now, the rest of the picture is similar, right down to the stick leaning against the plow. We each took turns driving the tractor and walking behind the plow. The tractor pulls

faster than horses can walk, so the plowman has to be in superb physical condition to keep up. I can’t imagine doing that all day long! Considering they only had a one-bottom plow in 1917, it would have taken a very long time to plow 10 acres. It would take about 10 hours of non-stop work to plow 6-1/2 acres with a 16 inch plow at 4 mph. There is a short cast iron exhaust pipe protruding into the fender well about one inch from each cylinder. There are no mufflers; just the straight pipe. The fender acts like a large tuba horn, amplifying the noise. At full throttle

under full load, the sound is deafening, especially if you are standing on that side of the fender. It has a foot-operated lever that raises and lowers the left wheel. When the bull wheel is in the furrow, as it is when plowing, adjusting that lever keeps the tractor level. I understand the Bulls had a tendency to tip over easily because most of the weight is carried on the right side. I am sure the patented leveling feature came in handy when plowing hillsides. The experience gained that day driving the Bull made us appreciate how hard

these pioneers had to work. My grandfather eventually traded the Little Bull in on a Waterloo boy, which in those days was a Corvette compared to what he had. I purchased the tractor at Oscar Cooke’s auction in Billings, Montana. The tractor was complete, but the engine needed repairs. I disassembled the tractor, overhauled the engine with new rings, performed a valve job, and adjusted the crankshaft bearings before giving it a new paint job. The tractor starts and runs well. It is identical to my grandfather’s first tractor

except for the logo on the side of the fender. I have been unsuccessful in my search for logo information, so that is yet to be done. I believe the tractor was built in the first year of manufacture, 1913. The owner’s manual that came with it shows it had a Kingston carburetor and spark plug ignition. The Bulls had their weaknesses. The large open bull gear, running down in the furrow, was exposed to dirt and grime, causing rapid wear and frequent replacement. The gear is one inch thick and three inches wide and follows the curvature of the drive wheel. My father told a story of what happened when Grandpa wore his out. Grandfather obtained the best steel bar stock he could get and spent one entire winter making a replacement gear. He heated and bent the bar stock in his bellows forge then drilled many one-inch diameter holes on the edge of the bar. These holes were drilled with a homemade post drill made from wood and parts of a grain binder. After drilling the holes, he used a hacksaw to cut the edge of each hole to form an individual “tooth” on the gear. (No wonder it took him all winter.) The parts manual shows a new replacement gear cost $12.50, but Granddad didn’t want to spend the money, so he made one from scratch. A year later, the Bull was traded for his Waterloo Boy. 47

6 Farmalls

OFFERED AT NO RESERVE

One of our adventures this winter led us down the road to Indiana. We were set to check out an International collection on a Tuesday, but as this winter goes we got so much snow I-80 was closed. The next day we set out early at 4 a.m. in case the roads were bad, but by the time we navigated through the snow and ice we were still 2hrs behind schedule. It was worth the effort as we arrived at our destination greeted by Steve Sickafoose and his great tractor collection. Steve started farming in 1974 on a 106acre farm that he worked hard to get. Working along side his brother, the family hog and grain farms have

grown every year. He has built up the family farms to working over 6500 acres, and his brother is also now operating over 6,500 acres. His two sons are now farming and have taken over the hog operations delivering over 50,000 hogs to market last year. When talking with Steve you can really tell how much family, education, and farming mean to him. Along the way Steve has put together a great collection of International Farmall tractors. The Mecum auction team is proud to offer 6 great tractors from the Steve Sickafoose collection at the Gone Farmin’ Spring Classic.
