Friend He’s been recognized as the world’s greatest Chevrolet collector. Recently he was inducted into the Great Hall at Bloomington Gold. Truly a pioneer of Corvette show promoters. Maybe not the first Corvette collector, but the first “Big” collector, not only the best cars but quantity. A Chevrolet dealer, closing in on 50 years, through good and hard times. What an accomplishment! Something not talked about often, have you ever noticed how much Chevrolet jewelry Bob has? Always a Chevrolet pin or something – everyday.

Make a market – Bob did that. He was a pioneer at Mecum Auctions. He bought the important cars. I consider him one of the cornerstones of the success of Mecum Auctions. I’m sure many more automotive and hobby accolades will follow. If Bob put on a car show, he was your friend. If Bob bought a collector car from you, he was your friend. If you bought a new Chevrolet at McDorman Chevrolet, you were Bob’s friend. He’s been my friend for a lot of years. Years from now, somebody will ask the question to one of the owners of these cars, “where did you get that car?” I’m sure the answer will be, “that came from my friend Bob McDorman.”

As told by Bloomington Gold from “The People of The Great Hall”...

Bob McDorman

National Show Promoter & Collector Corvette show promoter. Corvette collector. Chevrolet dealer. Bob McDorman has combined all three in a way that greatly advanced the Corvette phenomenon. In 1965, Bob bought a Chevrolet dealership southeast of Columbus, Ohio. Bob had a special fondness for Chevy’s sports car, and his tiny 8-employee store managed to get Chevrolet to allocate one new Corvette in 1966. As he approaches his fifth decade as a Chevrolet dealer, Bob has grown his dealership into one of the nation’s top Corvette retailers. In 2005, he opened a new $1.5 Million showroom devoted exclusively to Corvettes. In 1974, Bob held the first annual Bob McDorman Corvette show. What set the show apart was the award of a 1958 Corvette to the concours winner. He then set the Corvette world on its ear in 1976 by giving a brand-new Corvette as the best-in-show award. That event and those that followed forever changed the Corvette show scene. Bob never profited from these, as he always donated a generous portion of the receipts to Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Bob has assembled and sold several large collections of Corvettes and other classic cars and memorabilia. His current collection of 159 cars includes 89 Corvettes. Bob has always made his collections available for public viewing, photography and enjoyment at his annual Corvette shows. Even the Corvette Engineering team has made a point of viewing Bob’s cars for inspiration as they conduct Corvette road tests between Detroit and Bowling Green Corvette Assembly.
