DANA SAYS As we enter 2010 and approach a new decade, I would like to sincerely thank each and every Mecum customer for your loyalty and patronage. It is because of you, our customers, that Mecum Auctions was able to achieve such incredible landmarks in 2009. I am very pleased to announce that Mecum will retain its 6% Buyer’s fee and 6% Seller’s fee for all regularly scheduled events in 2010, in spite of the fact that most our competitors are charging a 10% Buyer’s fee and 10% Seller’s fee. Our customer friendly commission structure puts money back in YOUR pocket. As Mecum enters its third season with Discovery and HD Theater for the production of our weekly television show, “Mecum: Muscle Cars and More”, I am very excited about what the future holds. I trust that 2010 brings you great prosperity, and I look forward to seeing you at one or more of our auctions this year!

What is the criteria for placing cars in an auction on a certain day or time? The simplest answer is by value. We try to place cars with a given potential selling value with cars of similar value. We have determined that by grouping, the seller has a better chance of selling because buyers tend to fall into groups as well. Lots of buyers looking at an abundance of cars in the same price range translates into a better selling percentage. Now, it is also important to know that we have what we term Regional auctions (like Des Moines or Kansas City) and National auctions (like Indianapolis or Florida) – at a regional you might have cars selling in the $25,000-$50,000 range on Saturday, but at a national those cars might be grouped on Thursday or Friday. The entire process is designed to give every seller the best opportunity to sell their car.
A perfect example of proper placement is shown in the photo below; this is a car that ran at our December Kansas City auction. We grouped it to run on Saturday from 1-5 pm with a suggested value of $40,000. It crossed the block at 2 pm and sold for $40,000. Perfect placement that resulted in a sale and a great illustration of matching the right group of cars with the right buyers. M
BRANSON MUSEUM AUCTION BRINGS GLORIOUS RESULTS
It was “standing-room only” October 24, 2009 as thousands of collectors packed the Dick Clark American Bandstand Theater in Branson, Mo., for the Mecum ‘57 Heaven Museum Auction. Selling hundreds of items from the museum’s unique collection of 1957 vehicles, authentic storefronts and auto memorabilia, total gross sales topped $7 million (excluding buyer’s premium). The Mecum team gathered a record number of pre-registered and registered bidders to buy pieces from the museum’s incredible collection of cars,
collectibles and re-created ‘50s-era storefronts like a drive-in movie and service station. The museum drew an international crowd as well, with interested buyers from around the world - including Australia, Japan, South Africa and England - making purchases. Attendees bid on more than 75 classic cars and motorcycles of all makes and models. Also up for bid were neon and metal signs; vintage men’s and women’s clothing; furniture; books; magazines; vintage movie posters; and children’s toys. M

MEET FRANK MECUM Mecum Auction was established in 1988 when Frank Mecum was just six years old. He is the second youngest of four siblings. When looking back to the way Mecum Auction began, Frank remembers the office operating out of their home as the dining room doubled as the office. At age twelve he began his career with Mecum Auction as a Sticker Boy. That is when his passion and thirst for the auction business started. Frank is the driving force and Dana’s right hand man at the Mecum headquarters and leads the Consignment Department. Onsite at the auctions, wearing his signature Orange hat, Frank brings his infectious positive spirit and is able to work the crowd as a strong and dedicated Ringman. When Frank was asked what he believes is the key to the ever growing success of Mecum Auction, he simply responded with, “The group as a whole, everyone from our dedicated employees and to our outstanding customers is the absolute KEY to Mecum’s success.” M Contact Frank at 815-568-8888
