ALL THINGS MECUM As the year nears its close, Mecum isn’t slowing down. In fact we’re shifting into high gear and planning to close out 2013 with a bang and bring in 2014 with an all-out explosion. November takes us to Anaheim, California, for our second annual auction at the largest exhibit facility on the West Coast, the Anaheim Convention Center. We’ve got a great 750plus car lineup that will be crossing the block November 21-23. Pack up the family and head for Orange County! During the same weekend, Mecum is the presenting sponsor at the premier Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals show at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont (Chicago), Illinois. Mecum staff members will be on hand greeting show goers at The Mecum Lounge, so be sure to stop by and say hello. Then December will bring our 2013 grand finale event in Kansas City, Missouri, featuring 750 cars with more than 50 at no reserve, and there is still time to consign! While the year may be coming to a close, the auction season never stops at Mecum. The 2014 consignments are rolling in steady with more than 1,600 already entered on the way to 3,000 cars for Kissimmee, Florida. Couple those numbers with 3,000 pieces of Road Art over 10 days of non-stop Mecum auction action and there is only one thing left to say: Welcome to the world’s largest collector car auction.

Mecum Tops $18.6 Million In Chicago The windy city welcomed Mecum Auctions with an exceptional sale and enormous crowds at the Schaumburg Convention Center in Schaumburg, Illinois, October 10-12. With 965 cars crossing the block throughout the three-day event, 615 hammered sold for a 64 percent sell-through rate and $18,634,223 in sales. The one-of-akind personal driver of Corvette’s original designer Harley J. Earl led auction sales with a hammer price of $1.5 million. Chicagoland was abuzz with 6

Mecum in town and bidders and spectators filled the Schaumburg Convention Center to near capacity to take part in the action. Record numbers of registered bidders in attendance translated to very strong individual sales resulting in nearly $7 million in growth from last year’s Chicago-area auction. The Harley Earl Corvette (Lot S110), a 1963 General Motors styling car, took top honors at $1.5

million, and rightfully so as the one-of-a-kind Sting Ray gifted by GM to one of the most influential automobile stylists in the world. At a sale price of a half-million, a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (Lot S135.1) took the second seat in the top ten sales. As number 23 of just 69 built that year, the ZL1 has been restored to its original factory specifications and presents as an excellently documented example.

The auction achieved a strong 80 percent sell-through rate with 181 tractors hammering sold throughout the two-day event. With a grand $1,496,875 in hammer sales, Mecum’s Gone Farmin’ Division considers this auction to be another great success. Often times, having a great story behind a quality build is enough to turn a car into gold and create real buzz in the enthusiast community. Phillip and Amy Perrine of Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota, had this exact formula wrapped up neatly in the form of their custom 1951 Willys Overland Pickup. As one of the top-ten sales at Mecum’s recent Chicago 2013 auction, the pickup sold for $100,000, quite an impressive number for a custom Willys; but taking a close look at the truck itself, in addition to the story behind its build, it isn’t hard to see where the value lies. Phillip said his wife Amy spotted the Willys for sale in a field one day as the two were driving near their home. As they passed it, Phillip said Amy turned to him and said, “I think that was a Willys Truck. Let’s go see.” Phillip said he was a bit surprised, but simply responded, “Okay.” The couple drove back to the truck to look at it, and sure enough, it was a Willys. Phillip said, “I was shocked, I couldn’t believe she really knew it was a Willys, and I asked her, ‘How did you know that?’ To which she replied ‘I don’t know, I don’t know anything about trucks, I just knew it was a Willys.’” Phillip said they looked the truck over for a bit and then Amy decided to buy it. The couple paid $600. “Amy told me that she could use the truck to haul hay out to her horses and that it would be a project for me that I could work on in my shop. She told me I needed a project,” Phillip recounted. As a 12

MECUMMONTHLY

A START TO FINISH retired Vail, Colorado, Police Officer and Air Force Master Sergeant, Phillip was struggling to cope with day-to-day life. Having seen many friends give their lives to protect others, and having himself suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury and enduring a continuous battle with P.T.S.D., Phillip agreed that some type of project might be good for him. “She gave me the truck to work on and I never gave it back,” he said. Phillip knew from the start of the build where he would draw his inspiration from. “My goal was to build this truck in the memory of my fallen friends, to keep their spirit alive and to honor their service to this great country,” he explained. “Building this truck was my path to accomplish this goal.” The build included combining a totally boxed frame and complete MECUM.COM

new driveline and suspension with a 350 CI engine using Hooker headers, Mallory HEI ignition, Amsoil dual oil filtration and a serpentine belt system that produces approximately 375 HP through the Lokar-shifted Turbo automatic transmission. Phillip chose to cloak the truck in Black paint paired with Black genuine-leather interior. He added other custom additions including a Fatman Mustang front suspension, a custom made exterior sun visor, louvered hood and an airbrushed eagle/flag themed mural in the cargo bed. In the interior, Phillip retained the original restored gauges and tachometer and added some finishing touches including an Ididit steering column, a Kenwood stereo and CD player, and Sirius satellite radio capabilities. The building experience overall

EXPERIENCE was an extremely positive one for Phillip. “I loved every minute of building this truck and made many new friends along the way,” he explained, “but more than anything else, I loved feeling my fallen friends’ presence with me, and their inspiration in helping me build this beautiful machine.” Right about the time that Phillip was finally able to call the project complete, he and Amy learned that Mecum would be holding an auction in Chicago. “I had been watching Mecum Auctions on T.V. and was always impressed with the knowledge of the Mecum staff. When my wife and I saw that the Auction was going to be held in Chicago and at the Schaumburg Convention Center, we decided that is where we wanted to go,” said Phillip.

Phillip said he was nervous at first. “Amy and I were not sure how the truck would be received because it is an off-brand. We hoped people would look at the rarity of the truck, the beautiful art work in the bed of the truck and the professional craftsmanship it took to build this stunning machine before forming an opinion. I’ve heard Dana Mecum say many times that quality sells and I strived to meet those standards; I listened to him,” Phillip explained. “With regard as to how people received the truck, I can say, they loved it. I had many people come up to me and say that their father had one when they were growing up, and an older gentleman told me that he had used two of these types of trucks at his gas station,” he said. Both Phillip and Amy said the entire experience was more than they MECUM.COM

could have ever hoped for. “All of Mecum’s staff was great, as well as the driver (Donnie) from Reliable Carriers, and it was really nice to personally meet Frank Mecum and John Kraman,” Phillip said. “The Hotel was also beautiful,” he added. The fairy-tale ending is really in the sale of the truck though. The couple never expected their humble Willys to reach six figures, but with the quality of the build backed by its excellent story, the reception for the Willys was grand and bidding quickly reached $100,000 before the hammer dropped. “We were stunned at how fast the bidding was happening and how excited the crowd was for us. The response was as overwhelming as the final sold price,” Amy recounted. “After the auction we received voice and text messages congratulating us, along with so many people in the auditorium, the Mecum Staff and Donnie from Reliable giving us pats on the back. They were so excited for us! It is a memory we’ll keep for a lifetime.” Phillip said that the positivity of the experience from start to finish is not something he is willing to walk away from, and he’s already begun planning his next venture. “I am going to build a 1955 Willys One-Ton Truck back to original condition,” he said. “I’m going to make it a Goodyear Service Truck with a winch in the front and power take off in the back just like it was in the day. This truck will also be dedicated to the memory of my fallen friends, and they will be my inspiration to make it as perfect as possible, because they deserve nothing less.” Phillip said he plans to bring this new truck to Mecum as well and continue to take on new projects. “Someday when the 1955 Willys Truck is completed, I will again take it to a Mecum Auction, because I can’t imagine going to my shop and not having a project to work on. This work is my therapy, it’s my life, and it gives me a chance to talk to my friends every day.” M MECUMMONTHLY

MORE THAN JUST A JOB, IT’S A LIFESTYLE MEET THE MECUM CONSIGNMENT TEAM Lee Drummond has been working with Mecum in some capacity for three years, and earned the title of consignment agent nearly a year ago. Lee has been involved in the collector car industry since he was old enough to drive. His father is in the business of buying, restoring and selling classic cars for a living and Lee began working with him when he turned 16. The two would sell the finished vehicles at various Mecum auctions, and eventually Lee landed himself a job working for the company. Lee says, “At 23 I got my dream job with Mecum working as a consignment agent.”

Frank Mecum is a 10-year veteran working in the consignment department, and has earned the title of Consignment Director. In addition to his in-house work with Mecum’s consignors, Frank works the block on-site at the auctions as a sellers’ assistant working with owners to get the deals made. Son of Dana Mecum and grandson of a car salesman, Frank has been exposed to the vehicle and auction industry since birth and is now the third generation in a line of successful car dealers.

David Purvis has been a member of the Mecum team since the Indianapolis auction in 2010 and joined the consignment team just six months later. His father was a collector car dealer

and David grew up helping him in his showroom and at auctions. David says “I’ve been around classic cars and going to collector car auctions since I was in diapers.”

John Kraman joined the Mecum team in 2006 and has since earned the title of Consignment Director. Having grown up with a father who worked as a car salesman, John says “I have been a lifestyle car guy all my life.” On-site at the auctions John doubles as a commentator analyst for the “Mecum Auto Auctions: Muscle Cars & More” television show broadcast on Discovery’s Velocity network, now in its sixth year.

Brian Topp joined the Mecum consignment team two and half years ago after decades of working on cars. He began fixing up vehicles in 1987, starting with old Chevys. For the past 15 years, Brian has shifted his focus exclusively to fixing classic Corvettes. His first Mecum auction was Bloomington Gold in 1999. With an immediate attraction to the company and the event, he remained a loyal fan and participant until being hired on as a team member in March 2011.

Jeff Kurtz has worked for Mecum Auctions for the past seven months but has known Dana Mecum for almost 40 years. Growing up with a father

who was a new and used car dealer, Jeff has been in the business his entire life. He bought his first corvette at age 16 and says “I’ve been hooked on collector cars ever since.” He has done everything from simple detailing to full restorations, and he even ran his 1967 Chevelle Convertible across the Mecum auction block at the first Mecum auction ever held in Rockford, Illinois.

Wade Souter has been part of the Mecum consignment team for the past five years. Having grown up with a family in the car business, Wade has been around the car business his entire life and decided to continue the tradition using all the knowledge he’s gained through the years. In addition to working with consignors before the auctions, Wade works on-site at each event assisting absentee bidders in purchasing their dream cars.

Gavin Trippe has been a member of the Mecum team for the past three years as the “Man on the West Coast.” Gavin has spent his life promoting two- and four-wheel racing events in addition to collecting and refurbishing various cars and motorcycles. With an office in downtown Laguna Beach, Gavin says “Pinch me. I’m working on something I love, for the best guy in the business. There’s never a dull moment. West Coasters, here we are, so give me a call!” Gavin Trippe can be reached at (949) 337-5307. M

steve mcqueen’s HARLEY-DAVIDSON TO BE OFFERED AT anaheim Mecum Auctions will offer a rare piece of celebrity history at the second annual Anaheim auction this November 21-23 at the Anaheim Convention Center – a motorcycle once owned and ridden by “The King of Cool” Steve McQueen. As the highest paid actor of his time, McQueen is best remembered for his roles in movies like “The Great Escape,” “The Getaway,” “Bullitt” and “The Thomas Crown Affair.” In addition to his acting career, McQueen was an avid motorcycle and racecar enthusiast and a participant in off-road motorcycle

racing. By the time of his death in 1980, McQueen had built up a personal collection of more than 100 classic rides. While a part of McQueen’s vast motorcycle collection, this 1938 Harley-Davidson WLD (Lot S138.1) is more than just one of a hundred, it’s one that McQueen actually rode, and it is now set to ride Mecum’s red carpet in Anaheim. “There’s a big difference between a bike that McQueen owned and a bike that McQueen rode,” commented Mecum Auctions’ Founder and President Dana Mecum. MECUM.COM

The original and unrestored motorcycle was sold at the 1984 Steve McQueen estate sale at the Imperial Palace Hotel in Las Vegas. This rare Solo Sport edition features a Silver Tan and Sunshine Blue paint scheme and shows just 21,000 miles on its odometer. McQueen’s fully documented ownership will accompany the sale in addition to his personal tools found wrapped in a piece of denim in the framemounted tool box. This storied piece of McQueen history will cross Mecum’s auction block on Saturday, November 23 in Anaheim. M MECUMMONTHLY

RIDING THE REDLINE

Frank Mecum and I co-manage the Consignment Department as part of our daily office duties and enjoy working with the staff and consignors to ensure that all 15,000 vehicles handled each year are properly placed – we call it Inventory Management. A big part of our growth and success is the ability to provide great positions for entries of all types and price ranges. On-site Frank works with sellers on the block and I join the live TV announcer team as Commentator/Analyst for “Mecum Auto Auctions: Muscle Cars & More,” now in season 6. It is quite an honor to provide commentary for the diverse selection of entries at each auction! With nine of our collector car auctions aired live this year, the travel is extensive, the hours long, but the results are very gratifying. And we are planning an even bigger 2014!

In addition to my work with Mecum, I was afforded the humbling opportunity to attend and speak at a variety of automotive events this year that began with the 60th anniversary of the Corvette celebration at the Petersen Automotive Museum in March, featuring the debut of the C7 on the West Coast. In July I was off to Dayton, Ohio, for the joint “CoVention” of the Pontiac Oakland Club Intl. (POCI) and GTO Association of America (GTOAA) that brought a record show field of 2,000 cars! Corvette Funfest by Mid America in Effingham, Illinois, in September welcomed me for the first time and it is a Corvette party not to miss. I was also involved with four well-attended seminars that I hope to be invited back to next year. Finally it was back to L.A. with the Petersen folks in late October MECUM.COM

for three great events over a long weekend. It started with a big fundraiser and honored actor/ racer Patrick Dempsey, rock guitar legend Jeff Beck, and Rally racer sensation Ken Block. A few days later was an amazing program with Bob Lutz, retired auto industry executive, who was very informative and entertaining with a summary of his career. Finally Jim Wangers, best known for his role as the visionary ad man for the promotion of the Pontiac GTO, spoke at length to commemorate the pending 50th anniversary for what is regarded by many as the first muscle car in 1964. My gratifying work with Mecum and the amazing events I attended together made for a very busy and rewarding year! And with no doubt that 2014 is going to be bigger, busier and better than ever – all this lifelong car fanatic has to say is “Bring it on!” M MECUMMONTHLY

BLUETIFUL

From 1967 to 1969 Chevrolet built exactly 216 of what would become known as the Holy Grail of Corvettes, the L88. Production peaked at 116 cars in 1969, one of which is offered here in this expertly restored L88 convertible. In 1977 the car was discovered in Knoxville, Tennessee by Bryan Cooper, promoter of the Knoxville Corvette Expo for 36 years, and former Corvette dealer and noted authority Paul Kitchen, who was also credited as one of the early contributors to the classic Corvette collector’s lodestar, the Corvette Black Book by Mike Antonick.

Q The consignor first visits www.mecum.com and fills out a Position Request Form, or just calls (262) 275-5050 and speaks directly to a consignment agent. W After submitting the form, a consignment agent calls the seller to discuss vehicle placement, special features, value, expectations, etc.

CHAMPIONED CHALLENGER

Factory-backed by Chrysler for nearly a decade, Larry Griffith is a Super Stock Drag Racer who drove in the UDRA (United Drag Racers Association) Circuit in the ‘60s and ‘70s and continues building and working with racers today. A storied and champion racer, Griffith pledged his allegiance to Chrysler nearly from the start, and his decades of loyalty have paid off in many ways. “I started out in 1963 driving a Dodge 426 Ramcharger; now they call it a Max Wedge engine,” Griffith said. For Griffith, Chrysler and Mopar have always been the pinnacle. “It’s always been about the Chrysler heritage. Once I started racing Chryslers, that was it, nothing else was even 32

considered.” And in Griffith’s mind, the best of the Chrysler family has always been Dodge. “In ‘65 we got a Plymouth,” Griffith recalled. “That was the only Plymouth we ever campaigned, we raced with all Dodges after that.” One of his most fondly remembered racers was the 1968 Factory Super Stock Dodge Dart, now owned by retired 33-year Chrysler employee, Joe Hilger. Sporting the now-legendary 426 HP Dodge HEMI engine, the powerhouse car was the only tool Griffith needed to secure champion status in the UDRA for three years straight. “We raced at about 30-35 events across the U.S., and when they compiled the final points, we were declared the champion; that MECUM.COM

was ’68, ’69 and ‘70.” Griffith never had the chance to find out just how many championships he and his team would have gone on to claim, as the super stock circuit was dropped in ’71, with pro-stock racing taking its place. “In ’71 we ran NHRA – division 5,” Griffith explained. “We finished second in that and that qualified us to run the world championship out in Texas; but when NHRA changed the rules in ’72, that’s when Chrysler pulled out.” Griffith said that until that point, racing had been his bread and butter. “That was one thing I always did, I actually made a living at racing. And not many people can say that.”

Griffith said that he used that time to step back a bit from the racing scene and launch a business, but even with Chrysler pulling out, Griffith always kept one tire on the track and never abandoned the sport or the Chrysler brand. His loyalty to Chrysler paid off big years later when he was chosen to receive a 2009 Dodge Challenger Factory Drag Pak car – just the second one ever produced. With his eternal dedication to the track, Griffith took the opportunity to turn the car into another champion racer, and he knew exactly how he wanted to do it. Griffith immediately had the car dressed in the same multi-hued blue with silver lace and lettering

as his champion ’68 Dart wore. Knowing he wanted this car to be a winner, Griffith decided to outsource the building of the motor. “I can build a good solid motor but I needed one that could really out-run the competition.” He took the task to Arrington Performance, knowing he could trust the team of seasoned engine builders to create just what he needed. “Buddy Arrington (company founder and storied racer) was the last one still racing Chryslers after the factory-backing was pulled,” Griffith explained. “I have a lot of respect for him.” Griffith said the motor came out perfect. “They built the motor for us and let me tell you…it ran. That was one of the best decisions MECUM.COM

we could have made for this car: getting a really good quality engine built for it.” He took his time getting the car on the track, first taking it to shows across the U.S. and exposing it to the public. “In 2009 we did the Woodward Cruise in Detroit. It’s really a car show beyond any car show,” Griffith explained. His old matching ’68 Dart was at the cruise as well, and Griffith and Hilger set out to unite the two cars. “The Dart had been restored to my original colors and was displayed with a banner over it that said ‘Super Stock Champion, ’68, ’69 and ’70,’” Griffith said. “So we rolled out the new Challenger and they started getting the banner out and it said ‘Future MECUMMONTHLY

33

Championship Car.’” Griffith said he was surprised by the banner but knew it was time to get the car on the track and give it a go. With a promising future for the car, Griffith said he felt he needed to hire a driver that could really help the car live up to its potential. Seasoned driver Charlie Fitzsimmons became the hired gun to pilot the car and he did it well. “We came close at Indy in 2010, and then in 2011 we came even closer,” Griffith said. “In 2012, I said ‘We’re going to Gainesville!’ And we qualified number one on the first day.” Griffith went on to say that during eliminations “we just mowed them down right and left.” Fitzsimmons and the Challenger went on to win 34

MECUMMONTHLY

the 2012 NHRA Tire Kingdom Gatornationals, taking both the class elimination Wally and the stock eliminator Wally. Recently, Griffith acquired another Challenger and said that he wants to put more focus into building that one. “We’ve had two of these cars and we’ve been testing with the other car and driving it and everything, and we just started really building the other one,” he explained. Griffith said he’s ready to part with the No. 2 Drag Pak, and selling it at a Mecum Auction was his first choice. “To me, selling the car is a new adventure. I’ve never sold a car at an auction, and I want to have that fun. It’s like checking off the bucket list,” he said. Griffith said he’s excited to see MECUM.COM

the car find a new home. “If the new owner wants to go a new direction with it – that’s okay,” he said. “Just as long as they understand the car and appreciate it – that’s all that matters.” Griffith plans to continue to build race cars for as long as he can, for now focusing on the other Challenger. “We’ll get this new car ready to race,” he said, “and then I’m just waiting for that next big adventure.” Griffith’s 2009 Dodge Challenger Drag Pak #2 will cross Mecum’s auction block at the Kissimmee 2014 auction this January 17-26 as Lot F222. Even among the 3,000-car lineup, this Mopar Hemi-powered dominator is sure to stand out as the champion that it is. M
