DANA MECUM

COMING UP QUICK Welcome to the Daytime Auction in Monterey, California, where this year, we will offer more than 750 collector cars, giving zealous bidders more variety and selection on the peninsula in August than ever before! As Porsche collectors and enthusiasts enjoy the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911, Mecum will celebrate the entire marque of Porsche with over 50 cars to choose from, headlined by the 1955 550/1500 RS Spyder. Just a few weeks after Monterey, we head to Dallas for a four-day auction which has absolutely exploded with consignments now offering more than 1,250 cars all from the Dallas Convention Center this September 4-7. Among the immense Dallas lineup are two incredible collections. The Herin Collection features almost a dozen super rare and well-optioned Corvettes and Muscle Cars topped by a 1967 Corvette L88 Convertible. In addition, nearly 30 cars will be offered from collector Michael Scott, most at no reserve. Our Chicago auction is coming up quick, set for October 10-12, and with a headliner like the famed, wheel-standing Hemi Under Glass Collection, it’s going to be an auction no one will want to miss. Then we’re back to the West Coast for Anaheim in November and with the consignment book now open, the SoCal locale is already proving to attract a host of exciting cars and collectibles. Bring on the fall months – Mecum is ready, are you?

Coming across a car built several decades ago that hasn’t even turned over that fourth zero on its odometer is more than just rare – it truly defies logic. To imagine someone saving up for and purchasing a powerful and peerless machine straight from the factory only to drive it for less than 1,000 miles is a difficult thing to do. It is exactly this sort of inconceivable self-control that makes these low mileage originals few and far between, and exactly what makes them so sought after by collectors today. The Mecum Daytime Auction in Monterey will feature many low mileage cars, and here are three highly original and extremely low-mileage examples being offered. Saved from the wear and tear of daily driving and cared for as collectibles since the beginning, the cars are something at which to marvel.

Part of this exclusive group is a lightweight 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air Bubble Top coupe (Lot S135) – an unrestored and highly original car equipped with a Mark 1 Service Package better known as the Z11 upgrade. As an original factory radio and heaterdelete car with all-aluminum front end parts and the original matching numbers engine block, it shows a mere 572 original miles on the odometer. The look of this old-time stormer is classic factory with Tuxedo Black paint, Red interior with bench seat, 4-speed floor shifter and column-mounted 7,000 RPM tach, and Mickey Thompson slicks on painted steelies with dog dish caps. Sold new in Santa Ana, California, and formerly of the high-caliber Jerry Capizzi Collection, a triple Black 1966 Thunderbird convertible (Lot F141) will also grace the auction block sporting a mere 305 miles on its odometer. The car is an incredible example of Ford’s artfully restyled mid’60s personal luxury car, and one of a scant few equipped at the factory with the very rare Q-Code 428/345 HP engine and California emissions control package. It is well optioned with an automatic transmission, cruise control, leather seat upholstery, 6

safety convenience control panel, unique White/ Redline tires and deluxe wheel covers, bright wheel arch moldings, power windows with power vent windows, power driver’s seat, reclining passenger seat, factory air conditioning, AM factory radio with 8-Track player, power antenna, tinted glass, passenger accessory mirror, door edge guards and a molded fiberglass tonneau cover. This stunning Thunderbird has been carefully restored to Concours-quality standards with scrupulous attention to detail and authenticity and has earned no less than nine 1st Place prizes at numerous VTCI and AACA events. Also low mileage, but perhaps in a league of its own is this 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 (Lot F118) – an unrestored and original car with just 902 documented miles on the odometer. Its originality is evident in every detail of its present condition, from the trunk-mounted Autolite battery placed there by the factory to the plastic wrap that remains on the seat belts, steering wheel and passenger seat. Bob Perkins, founder of Perkins Restoration, former MCA national head judge and presently MCA Authenticity head judge knows

MECUM.COM

LESS TRAVELED

this car well, having first seen it in 1981. Its existence had been a consistent rumor at early MCA national meets and when Perkins found the car, he purchased it on the spot. After “a minor detailing on the bare metal parts,” the car was displayed in his showroom until sold to a private collector in ‘93. It was shown publicly only once at the 2007 Forge Invitational, before being purchased by well-known high performance Mustang and Shelby collector/vendor Richard Ellis. Invoiced to Pleasant Hills Motor Company Inc., the Boss wears its original Black Jade paint and Black Décor interior. Its 429/375 HP Cobra Jet Ram Air H.O. engine is backed by a 4-speed and 3.91 Traction-Lok rear end; standard Boss 429 equipment also includes power steering and front disc brakes, an engine oil cooler, driver-controlled hood scoop, front spoiler, color keyed dual

racing mirrors, trunk mounted battery, Competition suspension with ¾-inch rear sway bar, chromed Magnum 500 wheels with White letter Firestone Wide Oval tires, 8,000 RPM tachometer and AM radio. But it is the extraordinary extent of this car’s preservation that sets it apart from others of its kind. As Bob Perkins affirms, “There isn’t a nut or a bolt or a screw or a sticker or decal that isn’t original to that car; that’s what makes it so important… In my opinion it’s the best unrestored Boss 429 overall of any.” Still appearing fresh from the factory, all with less than 1,000 miles on the road, these cars are ready to change hands and find a new driver, or perhaps a new preservationist, at The Mecum Daytime Auction in Monterey. Don’t miss the chance to see pure, unadulterated history cross the block this August 15-17. M

Recently there has been an exciting new development in our quest to offer the best with an expansion in our services to include Collector Car Insurance. As the in-house agent here at Mecum, I can tell you we wouldn’t have taken this step if we didn’t feel that this product would complement our current services and provide a real benefit to our customers. You’ve finally purchased the car you’ve wanted your whole life. So now what? The next step is to

protect your investment. There are a lot of options available when selecting your insurance provider, so why should you choose Mecum Collector Insurance Agency? We put that background to good use with our new Collector Car Insurance agency. Mecum Collector Insurance Agency has knowledgeable staff that understands collector vehicles. For example, a Mecum agent knows why the windshield of your ‘56 Corvette

costs $3,000 as opposed to some other agency who figures the same windshield should only cost $500 and, unfortunately, will only pay up to that amount. It is also vital to remember that when you buy insurance you are buying service. Quality customer service is our number one priority and we’ve always benefited from giving our customers a little “extra.” We know what our customers demand when it comes to product quality and hopefully you’ll let us continue to give it to you in the form of Collector Car Insurance.

What You Should Know

Mecum Collector Insurance Agency is considered specialty insurance. Specialty insurance will give you more coverage and likely cost you less. Insider’s Scoop DAVID NEWHARDT

RACE READY

Regular auction attendees – and viewers of Mecum Auctions on Velocity – know that more than muscle cars roll across the block. Motorcycles, Road Art and race cars represent some of the “More” category in Mecum’s tag line. Race cars in particular, can present unique challenges to photograph. As purpose-built machines, they were designed to operate in a harsh, sparse environment; to show them to their best advantage, these cars need to be approached in a photographically different manner than a street car. By their very nature, race cars are aggressive; a low angle, long lens setup tends to emphasize that trait. Some racers – like an F1 car – are so low to the ground that I’ve put my camera directly on the asphalt to capture this feature. Others, like many of the voluptuous cars from the 1950s, benefit from a higher camera position. The 1994 Lotus

Type 95T John Player Special F1 racer (Lot S138) that is crossing the block at the Mecum Daytime Auction in Monterey is a good example of those lowriding rockets. Like most recent F1 cars, it’s a four-wheeled missile, long and low – very low. Photographing such a car at normal eye height does nothing to show the sheer ferocity of the machine. Everything on an F1 car is designed to slice through the air, fast, and the photos should get this message across. Another Monterey 2013 offering is the 1955 Porsche 550/1500 RS Spyder (Lot S134). This car is an excellent example of that more smoothed and rounded ‘50s styling. With its MECUM.COM

sweeping curves and organic contours, the aluminum body has lines that draw you in. It’s all you can do to stop your hand from caressing the shape. Because race cars are essentially custom-built, the engineering and workmanship is often impressive. Shooting closeups of such eye-candy is a great way to show that beauty is more than skin deep. Suspensions, engines, brake assemblies, intake and exhaust systems, cockpit – these are subject-rich areas that make superb targets for the camera. A last tip: try to shoot a race car in an area that is open, like a race track. That’s the car’s natural element. But if access to a track is not in the cards, a large lot or the tarmac at a local airport can fit the bill. Just don’t approach the photo session as if you’re shooting a 1970 Chevelle. Race cars are a different kettle of fish. M MECUMMONTHLY

in aCOLLECTION HERIN

A total of 11 super rare and highly optioned Corvettes and Muscle Cars from the Buddy Herin Collection will be available this September 7 at Mecum’s Dallas Auction at the Dallas Convention Center. Even with a lineup as impressive as this, there is without a doubt a star of Herin’s grand collection – a 1967 Corvette L88 Convertible (Lot S123), one of only 20 produced that year. Purchased new at Lyman Slack Chevrolet by Jim Elmer of Portland, Oregon, he bought the car to race and made his first pass with the new car fresh out of the box at Puyallup Dragway in Puyallup, Washington, running a scorching 11.47 with the sole

14

MECUMMONTHLY

additions of exhaust headers and 7-inch slicks. That set the tone for the car’s extensive drag racing career, which first made headlines when it captured the A/ Sports class win at the 1967 Indy Nationals. Elmer ultimately ran a best of 11.12 at 127.45 MPH, but soon after his Indy win he damaged both the transmission and the rear end, only to have his warranty claim rejected when he showed up at the dealership with the car in full competition trim, including sponsorship decals and elapsed time stickers on the windows! Unwilling to pay the costs of repair, Elmer sold the car to his friend and fellow racer Rob Robinson in February of 1968

MECUM.COM

for the princely sum of $5,000. In partnership with local GM parts man Clayton Cotardi, Robinson campaigned the car in NHRA A/Sports through 1968 and ‘ 69, running all the popular West Coast venues – Irwindale, Half Moon Bay, Woodburn, Seattle, Puyallup and sometimes in Boise, Idaho. Described by Robinson as “totally impressive for its era” and “in a class of its own,” the car consistently ran between 11.1- and 11.3-second times at 125-130 MPH and placed among the top 4 or 5 in NHRA national points standings. In 1970 Robinson returned the L88 to street trim. It was later purchased by well-known Corvette restorer Tim Thorpe of

of its

O’Fallen, Illinois, who began restoring the car before selling it to Buddy and Nova Herin in 1998. The Herins turned to the Naber Brothers of Houston to complete the restoration in the factory color combination of Marlboro Maroon with Black stinger and soft top, adding Kelsey Hayes finned aluminum bolt-on wheels and non-DOT Redline tires. In the process, Buddy Herin found that the color sold as Marlboro Maroon did not match the hue he had seen on unpainted original cars, so he reached out to DuPont to produce a paint that correctly matched the original factory color; that formula has been adapted by the National

own

Corvette Restorers Society in its restoration guidelines. Still retaining its mostly original interior, this L88 convertible is presented in its full glory, including the L88 427/430 HP engine, M22 “Rock Crusher” 4-speed manual transmission, 4.11 rear end, J56 heavy duty brakes and J50 power brakes, factory side exhaust and F41 Special Suspension; it is also believed to be the only 1967 L88 convertible to retain its original body panels. Winner of a Regional NCRS Top Flight award in 1997, it was also a participant in the 2008 Bloomington Gold L88 Invasion. Documentation for this rare firstyear L88 convertible includes

MECUM.COM

the tank sticker, vintage racing photographs and time slips, including the first one issued after its maiden run at Puyallup Dragway. Others in the Herin Collection include a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (Lot S127) – the only Red on Red ZL1 produced. He will also offer his 1957 Chevrolet Corvette Airbox (Lot S121), which is one of only 43 produced, as well as a 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle Z16 (S128) – one of only three known factory Black on Black Z16s. All 11 of the highly coveted vehicles in the Herin Collection offering will cross the block on Saturday of the September 4-7 auction. M

Q&A with collector

MICHAEL SCOTT

With a healthy mix of the new and old, foreign and domestic, variety is the theme of the Michael Scott Collection. This excellent lineup will cross the block at the Mecum Dallas Auction this September 4-7. In preparation for the auction, Mecum sat down with Mr. Scott to get a little background on his history with cars and how his collection came to be; here is what he had to say: How did you discover your love for cars or what inspired it? I have had a love for cars since I was a kid. I love to work on cars and tinker with them. Growing up you could always tell the year of the car by the body style and it was just natural for our generation to love cars. It was the beginning of hot rodding and the salt flats. My father used to get mad at me for disassembling his lawn mowers and putting them back together, that is after we could afford a gas 18

MECUMMONTHLY

mower. We used to go cruising every Friday and Saturday night, looking for someone to go out in the country and race. It meant a lot to have a fast car, you were considered really cool to have a hot rod or newer factory racer. I thought they wrote “American Graffiti” about us. But I am sure every guy my age could really relate to that movie. I had a ‘33 dodge coupe with a 327 in it for a while and while I was in Vietnam my father sold it and it broke my heart. I think I cried more over that, than when I got my “dear John” letter from my girlfriend breaking up with me. You could always replace the girlfriend, but a five-window coupe was tough to replace. It

MECUM.COM

wasn’t that great of a car, but I loved it and had a lot of fun driving it. How did you first get into collecting and what was your first purchase? I got into collecting cars when I could afford to. My first car was my 1960 Corvette and I loved it. I never thought I would have more than one car, much less 30. My passion for cars has been there for a long time, but I couldn’t afford but maybe one car. When I bought my 1960 Corvette I could not afford it and had a real hard time getting financing. I was so happy, I actually slept in it a few nights. My children have driven it and I let several of my friends and relatives use it for special occasions. That was before I fully restored it and now I don’t let anyone drive it. You have quite a variety of vehicles; what draws you to each vehicle?

I have always loved Corvettes so it was just natural to purchase the ZO6 and ZR1. As far as the Lamborghini and the Ferrari, they were just dreams that I had and always wanted them. I did not drive them very much but they are definitely attention getters. I have people all the time going down the highway taking pictures of those cars. The ‘32 Ford was a car that I always wanted when I had my ‘33 Dodge, but having a deuce coupe was just way cool. It was my goal to collect all Chevrolets from ‘55 to ‘65 or 1966 but I ran out of room in my building. Do you have a favorite car in the collection you are offering in Dallas? My favorite car would be either my 1960 Corvette or my 1932 Ford coupe. My 1960 ‘Vette was my first and I have always loved ‘32 Fords, so I am torn between the two.

What lasting memories have you created in or with any of these cars? You know every car I own has different memories but there is a lot of sweat and blood in many of them. My 1962 Impala is a great car – I bought one when I was 16 with my own money and my Dad made me take it back because it was too powerful for me. The best part of my 1932 Ford is how much my grandkids love riding in the rumble seat. The KR Mustang was purchased on the east coast and it took over a year to get it, finally right before I received the car, I called out there and the guy that I had been dealing with over that year was not working there

MECUM.COM

any longer. I asked why and the receptionist told me they had closed the dealership. I told her who I was and she told me not to worry, that I would still get my car. I had given them $50,000 and I had no hope of getting that car. Well, about two weeks later it arrived. Is there anything else you’d like to add about these cars or your experience collecting? I will miss all the cars in my collection, and trust me, my grandkids will never let me live this down. All 27 of the stunning vehicles in the offering will cross the auction block on Saturday, September 7 of the four-day auction, and many without reserve. Don’t miss the chance to place your bids on the carefully selected and cared for vehicles of The Michael Scott Collection. M MECUMMONTHLY

CHICAGO

This fall, Mecum Auctions will raise the bar by taking an already great and established auction to a fresh new venue in a world class facility! The venerable, annual St. Charles, Illinois, auction is now called Chicago and will take place at the stunning Marriott Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center in Schaumburg, Illinois. Located only 13 miles from Chicago O’Hare International Airport and just 26 miles from downtown Chicago – the heart of the country’s third most

populated city – the center is in a suburban location that is easy to get to, and with 500 guest rooms on 16 floors featuring the latest technology with a sleek modern vibe, the new venue is perfect for a continuously growing event. From the auction’s very humble beginnings at Arlington Park back in the ‘90s, and then after a move to the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles in 2000, it has now grown up into a powerhouse event with 1,000 entries, and it promises to be the biggest and best ever! Expect a docket chock-full of ‘50s chrome-

In addition, all three days will have live television coverage and be broadcast as “Mecum Auto Auctions, Muscle Cars and More” on Velocity by Discovery for a total of 16 hours of on-air action. Of course the best way to experience a Mecum Auction is to attend in person! The Chicago consignment docket is now open and I highly recommend early entry to join us this fall! M

THE PEOPLE’S tractor Since Dan Mecum launched Mecum’s Gone Farmin’ division in 2010, Porsche tractors have always been among the top sellers, and now the best one ever to cross the Mecum block is coming to Monterey – a fully restored 1954 Porsche Allgaier A133 Diesel (Lot S185). As popular and universally respected as Porsche is today, it is a little-known fact that one of young Ferdinand Porsche’s first aspirations was to build a device that would replace the oxen and horses that were so much a part of European farm life. The appearance of his first designs for a “Volksschlepper” or “People’s Tractor” coincided with the first of the Volkswagen project, likely also as part of Adolph Hitler’s National Socialist agenda. In his notebook 26

MECUMMONTHLY

Porsche wrote that “Tractors must have a low purchase price. Secondly, they must have low maintenance cost. Thirdly, they must be of universal application in agriculture. Sturdy, powerful and foolproof…” It was these last requirements that are thought to have inspired the rudimentary fluid coupler that was years ahead of other tractor designs. In 1946, field testing by the British in Austria proved the superiority of Porsche’s design, stating in reports that “the small Porsche tractor represents an important step forward in tractor design.” The Austrian government appointed former Porsche engineer Heinz Altenberg as liaison between Porsche and Irwin Allgaier, whose older tractor designs were badly in need of an update. Porsche Allgaier A133 3-cylinder diesel tractor is the evolution of the milestone postwar AP17 and AP22, the latter of which featured the distinctive styling and “bullnose” engine cover that would become a trademark of Porsche tractors beginning in 1954. A nut-and-bolt restoration by a Northern Italian gentleman and former Porsche-Allgaier factory worker, this extraordinarily rare A133 is being offered from the Peter and Cheryl Dunkel Collection on Saturday, August 17 at The Daytime Auction in Monterey. Dan Mecum will be available in Monterey to conduct inspections for absentee bidders. If interested, please email dan@mecum.com or call (262) 275-5050 to make arrangements.. M

Millers at the Mile

A touch of class and vintage collectibles meet high-speed racing around the Milwaukee Mile. That may be the simplest way to describe the Millers at Milwaukee Vintage Indy Car Event held last month. Hosted by the Harry A. Miller Club, the 19th annual event drew 50 racers to the starting line of the oldest operating motor speedway in the world, a perfect venue for a meet steeped in history. The Harry Miller Club was founded in 1995 to honor the extraordinary engine work of innovator and Wisconsin native Harry Miller. The club has since set out to encourage owners of Miller cars and other open-wheel vintage Indy cars to meet annually for an event that has gained recognition as a prestigious gathering of historically significant racers. Most of the cars involved in the meet hail from the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s including some roadsters from the early ‘60s. The cars run the track Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. followed by a banquet and silent auction. Typically the banquet is attended by more than 150 people, with 30

proceeds from the auction helping to offset costs of the event. “Many of the entrants have been coming for years so it has evolved into a nice gathering of people that have become old friends through a shared love of vintage race cars,” described Lenore Heinzelmann, one of the club directors. Notable cars at this year’s meet included Tom Malloy’s 1935 Miller Ford NOVI, Dan Davis’ 1920 Miller TNT and Dana Mecum’s 1935 Miller Ford V8 Special. Andretti Sports Marketing even provided an Indy 500 car as a decorative display for the weekend events. Next year’s meet will be held at the Milwaukee Mile on July 11-12.
