VOCHITA MIHAI, PH.D.
Originally from Bucharest, Romania, Dr. Vochita Mihai received her BS in Mathematics and MS in Non-Euclidian Geometry, from the University of Bucharest. Afterwards she moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she completed another MS in Mathematics and a PhD in Mathematics at Louisiana State University. Dr. Mihai begin teaching at Medaille College as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics in the Mathematics and Sciences Department in 2005. Now, 16 years later, she is a Full Professor and the chair of the Science, Mathematics and Technology Department. After she finished the undergraduate mathematics degree and master’s in geometry from the University of Bucharest, she was a full-time mathematics teacher for three years at one of the most prestigious middle schools in Bucharest. During that time, she decided to apply for graduate school in the United States. The opportunity to continue research in mathematics and teach in another country was for her an amazing and truly fulfilling experience. Dr. Mihai is passionate about teaching mathematics, she has taught a variety of mathematics courses from the introductory level to the more advanced level. She supervised students research projects, math clubs and developed new programs; BS in Mathematics and BS in Applied Mathematics. Dr. Mihai’s research interest is in the general area of infinite dimensional analysis, more specifically, Radon transform on infinite dimensional spaces, named The Gauss-Radon Transform. The Radon-Transform was named after the mathematician Johann Radon (1887-1956). Radon, in his 1917 paper defined the transform in two and n-dimensional spaces, and also found an inversion formula. His work was unnoticed for almost a half of the century. In 1963 Allan Cormac used this transform in tomography. He won the Nobel Prize in Medicine (1979) for proposing the use of this transform to reconstruct the density of the body from X-ray images from different directions. He implemented his idea by building and testing a prototype CT scanner. Dr. Mihai is looking forward to continue the study of the applications of this new transform on her sabbatical in Spring 2022. Dr. Mihai lives in East Amherst, NY, with her husband Claudiu and they have two children Alexandru and Ana. She enjoys spending time outdoors with her family and friends, bicycling, skiing, sailing and hiking. She has a passion for reading science fiction books and a great love for traveling.
