With locations in Buffalo and Rochester, Medaille College is a private, four-year college committed to serving the higher education needs of Western New York. Known for its flexible delivery systems, the College offers associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees through day, evening, weekend and online programs to a diverse regional student population. The College traces its roots to 1875, when the Sisters of Saint Joseph founded an institute for the preparation of teachers. In 1937, the Sisters received a charter from New York State to grant baccalaureate degrees in education to women in religious orders, and the institute was named Mount Saint Joseph Teachers’ College. In 1968, the Sisters of St. Joseph, led by Alice Huber, SSJ, Ph.D., initiated a change in the charter that would create a coeducational college. New York State issued the charter, and Medaille College was born. Granted by the Board of Regents, this charter established the College as an independent institution governed by a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees. Medaille experienced significant growth in the 1970s, and student enrollment has risen steadily ever since. During the 1980s and 1990s, the College strengthened programs and services for a growing and diverse student body. In 1991, the College implemented a residence program, attracting students from across New York State and Southern Ontario. Three years later, the Kevin I. Sullivan Campus Center opened, offering students a setting for dining, recreational and co-curricular activities. With the Trbovich Alumni Tower welcoming all visitors, the Sullivan Center serves as home to the Mavericks National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III men’s and women’s sports programs, which have experienced tremendous success in their short histories. The Buffalo campus has continued to expand its facilities and services to meet the needs of a growing traditional-aged college population. Major capital investments have enhanced students’ learning opportunities and access to support services, while encouraging a vibrant student life experience. With two residence halls, technologically enhanced classrooms, academic programs that integrate liberal and preprofessional learning and practical problem solving, and an array of extra- and co-curricular opportunities, the campus
has evolved into a vital learning environment within the historic Olmsted Crescent of Buffalo. In 2010, Medaille initiated its online programs, which continue to grow each semester with new degree options. In the fall of 2011, the College completed a construction project that doubled the size of Huber Hall with a new Student Success Center that integrates academic and student support services under one roof. In September 2012, the Sullivan Center expansion was completed, creating a 3,000-square-foot fitness center, an events arena with a 750-person capacity, locker rooms and student group meeting spaces. In June 2015, Medaille welcomed its seventh president, Kenneth M. Macur, Ph.D. Under his leadership, the College looks to expand program offerings, post-baccalaureate partnerships and enrollments. The College has a bold vision for the next decade, and the most visible sign is the formal dedication of the first playing fields of our new 18-acre Medaille Sports Complex at Buffalo Color Park. The new home field for the Mavericks, the ’Plex will also be utilized by local club and youth sports teams. With a lacrosse and soccer field already constructed, and plans to expand, as well as the ability to play football and field hockey, the Medaille Sports Complex is a key testament to the College’s commitment to present new, bold opportunities for our students and our community. Medaille College is the fifth-largest private college in Buffalo, with an economic impact on the community that exceeds $147 million. The College has nearly 80 full-time and more than 250 part-time faculty members. The growth of Medaille College throughout its history has been guided by a commitment to being the “College of Opportunity” for the region that it serves. As Medaille continues to innovate and respond to the higher education needs of the 21st century, it embraces this ethos even more, and the College has set a strategic direction that seeks to extend and deepen what “opportunity” means for both its students and the community in which they live and learn.

ACADEMIC S YMBOLISM THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION The academic procession of today’s Commencement exercises is made up of candidates for degrees, members of the faculty, members of the Board of Trustees, and members of the platform party marching in that order. After the ceremony, the order of the march is reversed. The order of march is in accordance with academic protocol which was established centuries ago when academic ceremonies were predominately directed by the clergy. In keeping with the familiar order of the religious procession, the younger and newer groups precede the older, and the place of highest honor is at the end of the procession.
THE MACE BEARER The Mace Bearer carries a mace in the procession immediately preceding the President both entering and leaving the ceremony. The office of the Mace Bearer is purely ceremonial, and derives from the medieval times in England when an official such as the Lord of the Admiralty or the Chief Justice of the Court of Assizes, was taking office or opening his court and needed a bodyguard. Then the mace, a formidable weapon, was held ready to protect the person of the dignitary. From the sixteenth century in England and since colonial days in America, it has become a symbol of office only, and is carried by a distinguished member of the faculty.

ACADEMIC S YMBOLISM
(continued)
THE TRADITION OF ACADEMIC REGALIA The pageantry, tradition and ritual of college and university commencement ceremonies in the United States originated more than 800 years ago in the medieval universities of Europe. The first academic degree recorded was conferred by the University of Bologna (Italy) in the middle of the twelfth century. The practice of conferring degrees spread from Bologna to other European universities such as the University of Paris, and then to Oxford and Cambridge. Medieval institutions of higher learning were traditionally administered by monastic orders, and students, as well as their instructors, wore the habits of monks to protect themselves from the cold of drafty rooms and corridors. In 1321, the University of Coimbra (Portugal) required those earning bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees in theology to wear monastic gowns — the first such injunction recorded. Originally, the hood worn by those holding master’s degrees and doctorates was a head covering, the monk’s tippet. When caps came into fashion in the fifteenth century, the hoods were draped down and back and were ornamented with silk or velvet linings. On May 16, 1895, a delegation of representatives from various institutions convened at Columbia University to consider the question of academic attire in the United States. The deliberations of the conference resulted in the formulation of a unified system of academic apparel consisting of gowns, hoods and caps to be worn by the graduates of any institution of higher learning in the United States. Adherence to this Intercollegiate Code of Academic Costume was voluntary; however, virtually all institutions adopted it, with the exception of Harvard University and six others. The Intercollegiate Code specified that all graduates would wear black gowns, the pattern of which would vary according to the degree. Colored accessories were permitted to represent a particular degree or institution. Undergraduates were required to wear a severe, unornamented black robe with long pointed sleeves, an Oxford mortarboard cap and a black tassel. The greatest degree of symbolism was represented by the hood, which signified not only the degree of the graduate but also the institution from which it was conferred. The hoods were bordered in the appropriate faculty colors to designate the specified academic discipline of the graduate and were linked with the official colors of the institution. In keeping with long established traditions, graduates of Medaille College continue to wear black robes with an Oxford mortarboard cap and a black tassel.

REMEMBERING CHANTEL RAYMOND M A RC H 4 , 19 9 8 - O C TO B E R 2 9 , 2 018
Our dear friend and Medaille student Chantel Raymond left us in the autumn of 2018 while pursuing her studies to become an educator. From the Bronx and the oldest of six children, Chantel worked hard to gain admission into Medaille and she blessed us with her love for dance, elephants and music. Her passion for life was an example to us all. It is the honor of our Medaille Community to award Chantel Raymond with a posthumous degree at this commencement ceremony in order to recognize her dedication to the College, her determination to graduate and her unyielding desire to teach our young people. We will miss her...
