Medaille College concentrates on excellence in teaching, with an emphasis on personal attention to its diverse student body. Its curriculum provides a solid liberal arts and sciences foundation with early access to career-oriented education. The faculty and all of those involved in the mission of education challenge students and themselves to the highest possible standards of achievement, but that challenge is balanced by support for every individual student and a concern that each one succeeds.
Historical Overview With locations in Buffalo, Amherst and Rochester, New York, Medaille College is a private, four-year college committed to serving the higher education needs of Western and Central New York, and Southern Ontario. Known for its flexible delivery systems, the College offers master’s, bachelor’s, and associate degrees through day, evening, weekend, and online programs. Medaille College traces its roots to 1875, when it was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph as an institute to prepare teachers. In 1937, the Sisters received an absolute charter from New York State and their institution was named Mount St. Joseph Teachers’ College, chartered to grant baccalaureate degrees in education. In 1968, the Sisters of St. Joseph, led by Alice Huber, SSJ, Ph.D., initiated a change in the charter, which would create a new, co-educational college. New York State granted this charter and Medaille College was born. In the 1970s, Medaille experienced rapid expansion. Student enrollment grew, and new facilities, like the Downey Science Building, were built to meet the demands of new degrees and program options. In 1991, the College implemented a resident student program, attracting students from throughout New York State and Southern Ontario. Three years later, the Kevin I. Sullivan Campus Center opened, offering students a setting for athletic, dining, and recreational activities. The Sullivan Campus Center, with its Trbovich Alumni Tower, serves as home to the College’s National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III sports program, which has seen tremendous success in its short history. In fall 2001, Medaille opened its first residence hall, followed two years later by a second residence hall, bringing the total number of resident students to nearly 350 and creating an even greater need for campus facilities for recreation and for learning. Medaille met that need by expanding the Sullivan Campus Center, renovating the Huber Hall Library, and installing new parking areas and a quadrangle green space.
Heidi A. Raphael ’85 Robert L. Stevenson Robby Takac ’86
Expansion has also continued at Medaille’s branch campuses, which deliver adult and graduate programs. With a need for more space and upgraded facilities, the Amherst Campus moved to its new location at 30 Wilson Road, Williamsville, NY, in May 2007. In June 2009, the Rochester Campus relocated to 1880 South Winton Road in Rochester, NY, with classrooms, study space, and an expanded library in a dedicated facility.

In June 2007, Medaille welcomed its sixth president, Richard T. Jurasek, Ph.D. Under his leadership, the College has committed to develop partnerships with local organizations, to contribute to the educational, civic and economic development of the region, and to focus on strategic planning and assessment. In addition, the College has embarked on a massive construction project to nearly double the size of Huber Hall with a new Student Success Center. In a project scheduled for completion by fall 2011, the new building will bring academic and student support services under one roof. Medaille’s annual operating budget is now $57 million and the annual economic impact of Medaille on our community exceeds $147 million. In the past ten years, the number of full-time faculty has nearly doubled, and the College’s enrollment has increased nearly 200%. The total enrollment approaching 3,000 students makes Medaille the fourth largest private college in Western New York.

Lois Marie Gibbs
Undergraduate Ceremony Speaker
Executive Director, Center for Health, Environment & Justice Lois Marie Gibbs founded the Center for Health, Environment & Justice (CHEJ) in 1981, and currently serves as its executive director. This national organization educates communities around the world about toxic chemicals and children’s unique vulnerability to environmental exposures. The CHEJ has assisted over 10,000 grassroots groups with organizational efforts, as well as technical and general information nationwide. In spring 1978, Gibbs discovered that her child was attending an elementary school built on top of a 20,000 ton, toxic chemical dump in Niagara Falls, N.Y. After organizing neighbors into the Love Canal Homeowners Association, she struggled for more than two years to relocate the families of Love Canal. In October 1980, President Jimmy Carter delivered an Emergency Declaration, which moved 900 families from this hazardous area and signified victory for the grassroots community. Understanding that the toxic waste crisis went far beyond her backyard, she became determined to support these grassroots efforts. As the author of Love Canal: The Story Continues, Gibbs brings the Love Canal story up-todate and discusses the issues society continues to face with chemical exposure. CHEJ has convened several nationwide coalitions of grassroots groups to implement collaborative strategies around persistent toxic chemicals like dioxin, children’s environmental health and the precautionary principle. Gibbs has been recognized extensively for her critical role in the grassroots environmental justice movement. She has spoken at numerous conferences and has been featured in hundreds of newspaper articles, magazines, and textbooks. She is the recipient of the 1990 Goldman Environmental Prize, Outside Magazine’s “Top Ten Who Made a Difference Honor Roll” in 1991, the 1998 Heinz Award, the 1999 John Gardner Leadership Award from the Independent Sector, and in 2003, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. She has received an honorary Ph.D. from the State University of New York College at Cortland and another from Haverford College. She currently lives in Virginia with her family.

CANADIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM
AMERICAN NATIONAL ANTHEM
O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command.
Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light, what so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
With glowing hearts we see thee rise The True North strong and free:
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
From far and wide, O Canada, We stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada! We stand on guard for thee.
18
And the rockets’ red glare the bombs bursting in air gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

COMMENCEMENT
The Academic Procession The academic procession of today’s Commencement exercises is made up of candidates for degrees, members of the faculty, members of the Board of Trustees, and members of the platform party marching in that order. After the ceremony, the order of the march is reversed. The order of march is in accordance with academic protocol which was established centuries ago when academic ceremonies were predominately directed by the clergy. In keeping with the familiar order of the religious procession, the younger and newer groups precede the older, and the place of highest honor is at the end of the procession.
Academic Symbolism
The Tradition of Academic Regalia The pageantry, tradition, and ritual of college and university commencement ceremonies in the United States originated more than 800 years ago in the medieval universities of Europe. The first academic degree recorded was conferred by the University of Bologna (Italy) in the middle of the twelfth century. The practice of conferring degrees spread from Bologna to other European universities such as the University of Paris, and then to Oxford and Cambridge. Medieval institutions of higher learning were traditionally administered by monastic orders, and students as well as their instructors wore the habits of monks to protect themselves from the cold of drafty rooms and corridors. In 1321, the University of Coimbra (Portugal) required all bachelors, masters, and doctors of theology to wear monastic gowns—the first such injunction recorded. Originally, the hood worn by those holding master’s degrees and doctorates was a head covering, the monk’s tippet. When caps came into fashion in the fifteenth century the hoods were draped down and back and ornamented with silk or velvet linings. On May 16, 1895, a delegation of representatives from various institutions convened at Columbia University to consider the question of academic attire in the United States. The deliberations of the conference resulted in the formulation of a unified system of academic apparel consisting of gowns, hoods, and caps to be worn by the graduates of any institution of higher learning in the United States. Adherence to this intercollegiate code of academic costume was voluntary; however, virtually all institutions with the exception of Harvard University and six others adopted it. The Intercollegiate Code specified that all graduates would wear black gowns, the pattern of which would vary according to the degree. Colored accessories were permitted to represent a particular degree or institution. Undergraduates were required to wear a severe, unornamented black robe with long pointed sleeves, an Oxford mortarboard cap, and a black tassel. The greatest degree of symbolism was represented by the hood which signified not only the degree of the graduate but also the institution from which it was conferred. The hoods were bordered in the appropriate faculty colors to designate the specified academic discipline of the graduate and linked with the official colors of the institution. In keeping with long established traditions, graduates of Medaille College continue to wear black robes with an Oxford mortarboard cap and black tassel.
The Mace Bearer The Mace Bearer carries a mace in the procession immediately preceding the President both entering and leaving the ceremony. The office of the Mace Bearer is purely ceremonial, and derives from the medieval times in England when an official such as the Lord of the Admiralty or the Chief Justice of the Court of Assizes, was taking office or opening his court and needed a bodyguard. Then the mace, a formidable weapon, was held ready to protect the person of the dignitary. From the sixteenth century in England and since colonial days in America, it has become a symbol of office only, and is carried by a distinguished member of the faculty.
