The opportunity to provide an integrated solution for NICU parents and healthcare professionals to help those babies most at-risk greater access to the life-giving medicine of human milk was a driving force behind our decision to acquire Acacia Neonatal. We are pleased to have them be a part of the Medela family and dedicate this issue to NICU related topics. In these pages, we will introduce you to our enhanced NICU and enteral feeding platform. In our feature story on page 4, we talk about why this acquisition is important not just to Medela but to mothers and infants who are beginning their journey on the human milk path in the NICU. cover story: follow the milk
“Follow the Milk” In May, Medela finalized the purchase of the enteral feeding assets of Acacia, Inc., a company that designs and produces a portfolio of innovative neonatal feeding products. Recently, Human Milk Magazine sat down with Carolin Archibald, President of Medela, and Dan Hyun, Vice President of Enteral Feeding for Medela and President of Acacia, Inc., to talk about Medela’s NICU expansion.
HMM: CA:
Why is Medela expanding its NICU focus?
Medela has what we call a “destiny statement” which speaks to the reason we exist as a company:
To enhance mother and baby health through the life-giving benefits of breast milk. This speaks to all babies – not just healthy babies, but also babies who are born premature. For us to fulfill our destiny statement, we also needed to look towards the NICU and see how human milk can help these babies. Human milk doesn’t just provide nutritional value for NICU babies; it also has medicinal value. There’s a lot of research that substantiates this. That pointed our direction to the NICU. We are known for our breastpumps and that speaks to the expression side and how can we get the volume of human milk expressed from mothers. But then, what do you do with it? We needed to follow the milk – from expression to collection to storage and preparation of human milk and all the way to the feeding of human milk to the infant. The vast majority of premature babies in the NICU are fed enterally. So it was clear we need to get into this space. Through our acquisition of Acacia, we are closing that loop from expression all the way to feeding. continued ❱

Acacia already had a presence in the marketplace and they
had a full portfolio. That was something that was very attractive to us. They had the whole value chain established, with a focus on safety and quality. The portfolio as well as the organizational capabilities – those were two things that we were looking for and Acacia certainly delivered on that. One thing that we really liked about the Acacia portfolio is its innovative product development capabilities. Dan [Hyun] is just an incredibly innovative person – very creative and an idea generator. There’s just a strong cultural fit in terms of common values, common goals, common mission or destiny. It was an obvious fit for us from a business standpoint as well as a cultural standpoint. Acacia was, hands down, the strongest partner for us to look at.

I have this personal mission, as well as a company mission, of
advancing neonatal health care. In order for us to expand, there are a couple of routes: do it yourself or find a partner. We looked for a strategic alignment with a company with similar values and similar mission. We believe Medela is a perfect strategic partner. It offers all the
