Kids Eye Cancer & Nano Particle T

his could be Indias second nano success story. In a step that could revolutionize treatment of retinoblastoma a rare cancer of the retina that mainly affects children below two IIT-Bombay and doctors from Tata Memorial Hospital (Mumbai ) and Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad have developed a nanoparticle that could battle the child killer. Last week, Guntur teen Shirin Thakur took the third shot of a special concoction nanoparticles of carboplatin used to treat retinoblastoma into the tissues around her left eye. I have been suffering from retinoblastoma in the left eye since I was two. Even in US, they told me they would have to remove my eye, she said. Last week, in Hyderabad with Dr Debraj Shome, who has been on the project for five years, the 17year-old was all smiles. Now, she has fuzzy vision in the nearly blind eye. It gets better every day. If all goes well, there need not be any more reel-life Paarshas, who in the film Shwaas , Indias entry to the Oscars in 2004, lost both eyes due to retinoblastoma.

Retinoblastoma is a cancer of the retina, the sensitive lining that helps us see. The cancer mainly affects children, occurring in one in 10,000-15, 000 births In Nanotechnology, a particle is defined as a small object that behaves as a whole unit in terms of its transport and properties. It is further classified according to size: in terms of diameter, fine particles cover a range between 100 and 2500 nanometers, while ultrafine particles, on the other hand, are sized between 1 and 100 nanometers. Similar to ultrafine particles, nanoparticles are sized between 1 and 100 nanometers. Nanoparticles may or may not exhibit size-related properties that differ significantly from those observed in fine particles or bulk materials. Although the size of most molecules would fit into the above outline, individual molecules are usually not referred to as nanoparticles

Novartis Gains Exclusive Rights To Debio 025, An Antiviral Agent In Phase IIb Development As Potential First-in-class Hepatitis C Therapy.

N

ovartis has gained exclusive rights to develop and market Debio 025 (alisporivir), a potential first-in-class antiviral agent currently in Phase IIb development for the treatment of hepatitis C. Debio 025 is the first in a new class of n drugs called cyclophilin inhibitors which could become part of the future standard of care for the disease. Debio 025 has been in-licensed from Debiophar m Group(TM), an i n d e p e n d e n t biopharmaceuticals company based in Switzerland, under an ag reement which gives Novartis exclusive worldwide development and marketing rights (excluding Japan). Under the terms of the agreement, Novartis will make an upfront payment to Debiopharm, and Debiopharm will be eligible for milestone payments, and for royalties on future sales of Debio 025, if it is approved. The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals. "Hepatitis C is sometimes referred to as a

'silent epidemic' because the virus can lie dormant in the body for years or even decades before the symptoms become apparent," said David Epstein, CEO of the Novar tis Pharmaceuticals Division. "Novartis is dedicated

to developi ng medicines that will reduce t h e impact of this disease on patients, and we believe that Debio 025 could prove an impor tant step f o r wa r d b y s i g n i f i c a n t ly enhancing the efficacy of existing therapy that forms the standard of care for hepatitis C. More than 170 million people worldwide are infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV)3, and this can cause serious liver disease leading to cirrhosis or liver cancer which may result in death. There is an urgent need for more effective medications, often used in combination, as

current therapy is only effective in around 50% of patients with the most prevalent form of the virus, called genotype 12. Cyclophilin inhibitors such as Debio 025 provide a novel approach to treatment by targeting h host proteins that are involved inv n olved in the growth of the hepatitis hepat C virus. Results o a Phase II study of show that Debio 025 significantly reduced HCV replication when used alone, and had an important additive anti-HCV effect (4.6 log10 reduction) in combination with pegylated interferon alfa-2a in treatment-n treatment-naĂŻve patients1. No significant safety issues have b e e n i d e n t i f i e d s o f a r. A double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase IIb study is now under way to assess the efficacy and safety of Debio 025 in combination with the current standard of care for hepatitis C - peginterferon alfa2a plus ribavirin - in treatmentnaĂŻve patients. The study is being conducted in patients with the most common genotype 1. Debio 025 is also effective against other genotypes of the virus1,4. The in-licensing of Debio 025 represents a further

NEWS expansion of the Novartis hepatitis C portfolio following the filing of Joulferon速 /Zalbin速 (albinterferon alfa2b) for European and US regulatory approval at the end of 2009. In Phase III studies, Joulferon dosed every two weeks showed similar efficacy to peginterferon alfa-2a dosed weekly while requiring half the number of injections. Albinterferon alfa-2b is being developed and will be cocommercialized in the US together with Human Genome Sciences, who filed for US approval under the brand name Zalbin速 . Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) -- The H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu, may have killed as many as 17,000 Americans, according to new estimates by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta.

people age 65 and older. Since this new flu virus emerged in April 2009, health officials have recognized that the reported numbers of people who have been hospitalized and died provide only a partial picture of the full outbreak.

Though 2,498 confirmed deaths linked to the H1N1 virus had been reported to the CDC as of January 30, the agency estimates that between 8,330 and 17,160 people actually have died from H1N1.

Underreporting of influenza cases and deaths is common, especially in the early weeks or months of an outbreak.

The overwhelming majority of the people who died -- between 6,390 and 13,170 -- were 18 to 6 4 ye a r s o l d , t h e C D C estimates. Between 880 and 1,810 children 17 years old and younger also died from this flu, according to CDC estimates. In comparison, the CDC says that in a regular flu season, about 36,000 people in the United States die from seasonal flu, with 90 percent of the deaths usually occurring in

By mid-July last year, the World Health Organization (WHO) no longer recommended that countries with known H1N1 transmission test everybody who had flulike symptoms, as l a b o r a t o r i e s we r e b e i n g overwhelmed. Despite the recommendation that deaths suspected to be from H1N1 be tested, the CDC is aware that many are not, and in many cases H1N1 might not have been suspected. The new CDC estimates are based on laboratory-confirmed cases, flu surveillance data and mathematical modeling, CDC spokesman Richard Quartarone told CNN. According to the re por t released Friday, the CDC estimates an average of 57 million people have been infected with H1N1 and an average 257,000 cases resulted in hospitalizations. Health officials continue to urge people who haven't received a vaccination to do so. "The real tragedy is that people are still getting sick and we have a vaccine that will help prevent illness," Quartarone said

Brit woman gets 'incompatible' kidney in ground-breaking transplant

“ Doctors said that after a kidney transplant, a patient's lifestyle must change and less socialising is also advised.’’

LONDON - Maxine Bath has had a life-saving kidney transplant after having her blood plasma frozen and filtered to make sure the organ was not rejected by her body. Bath, 41, from Wolverhampton, is the first p e r s o n i n t h e wo r l d t o successfully receive an “incompatible” donor kidney from her sister in spite of having dangerously low blood p r e s s u r e, t h a n k s t o t h e technique. Bath had been on dialysis for 15 years after kidney failure and waited for nearly ten years for a kidney that would not be rejected by her body. In fact, doctors were afraid that she would only live for months

after she developed blood pressure problems in course of the past year. The operation, which was performed at University Hospital in Coventry at the end o f N o ve m b e r, u s e d a cryofiltration system to remove plasma from the blood and freeze it, turning proteins and antibodies into a gel-like substance. his process ensured that the antibodies, which can reject a transplanted organ, were filtered away before the plasma was warmed up and reintroduced into Bath's body.

Kidney transplant patients must avoid public gatherings

As Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh resigned as general secretary of the party on health grounds, doctors here said that people who have undergone a kidney transplant develop low immune system and need to avoid public gatherings and crowded places for a better life. The immune system of kidney transplant patients goes down. It is advised to avoid public gatherings as they are susceptible to catching other ailments like pneumonia, swine flu and other viral infections, Dinesh Khullar, a senior kidney expert at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital here. told IANS. Doctors said that it's not that people cannot lead a normal life after transplant. Those who have the means can go for a second transplant…lets say after 10 or 15 years. They are a high-risk group and must avoid crowded

places as they don't know who is sitting next to them. In relative ter ms, a kidney transplant patient catches some other health problems easily and this can affect the life span negatively, Khullar explained by way of rationalising Amar Singh's decision which has given rise to a lot of political and media speculation. Jasuja said that home food, due rest and avoiding alcohol are good for such people.

What is QUANTUM MEDICINE? Q uantum medicine is one of the most promising direction of modern medicine. It is based on the use of purposeful effects of low-dosage electromagnetic radiation ( q u a n t u m ) i n treatment, diagnosis, prophyl axis and rehabilitation of patient. It recruits natural, environment like factors of electromagnetic exposure that has beneficial effects on cells, organs and systems of organism.Low energies employed in quantum medicine are absolutely harmless. The treatment reserves existing anomalous process, disease to stablity and health. This is because quantum treatment activates latent reserves of the organism adaptation at the level of the cell and the entire biologic system, strongly enhancing immunity and mobilizing the organism for active resistance to functional disorder. Quantum Medicine uses a Low-energy, safe electromagnetic radiation which has beneficial effects on intracellular and intercellular process. The Key objective is to treat, diagnose, prophylaxes and rehabilitate patients thus maintaining a harmonic state of health in a living organism for a long time.

Why should I try Quantum Therapy? QUANTUM MEDICINE THERAPY is developed by Russian Sciencetists and Engineers. Its also called MIL THERAPY. B

ody mass index (BMI) the number tells us if we are over weight, obese or under weight. BMI is calculated from the person's body weight and height. Though BMI does not tell exactly the persons body fat it correlates the person's body fat. BMI is the parameter which we use to assess the overall risk of developing the heart disease when patients are overweight or obese. BMI is the most widely accepted method to know if the individual is having the normal or desirable weight as it is inexpensive, convenient method and it is calculated based on height and weight. BMI is calculated based on the following formula. BMI

YOGA Sutras of Patanjali In Indian philosophy, Yoga is the name of one of the six orthodox philosophical schools. The Yoga philosophical system is closely allied with the Samkhya School.

T

he Yoga school as expounded by the sage Pa t a n j a l i a c c e p t s t h e S a m k hya psychology and metaphysics, but is more theistic than the Samkhya, as evidenced by the addition of a divine entity to the Samkhya's twenty-five elements of reality. The parallels between Yoga and Samkhya were so close that Max M端ller says that "the two philosophies were in popular parlance distinguished from each other as Samkhya with and Samkhya without a Lord...." The intimate relationship between Samkhya and Yoga is explained by Heinrich Zimmer:

Shilpa & Yoga She is ravishingly beautiful, has a great body, smiling-talking eyes, a decent actress and yes she has done India 'proud'. Of course we are talking about our latest export Shilpa Shetty who is m a k i n g definite inroads in the western world after the acrimoniously famous 'Big Brother' victory. Before going into the details, let's start with something that sta rtles once the Yoga video flows like the tranquil Kerala backwaters. It's obvious that Shilpa's glamorous appeal has been utilized to maximize the eyeballs. For when you watch gorgeous S2 moving that lithe body trapped in a skimpy top it's hard to take off the eyes away from

the washboard abs and the slow sensuous moves. The burning austere lamps, decorated elephants walking languorously on a sea beach and pious music tinkering along softly are definite attempts at cashing in on the stereotypes associated with India. To be fair to Shilpa, apart from capitalizing on the Oomph factor, she makes an ext remely genuine attempt of helping you delve into the world of Yoga by giving personalized anecdotes from her own hectic life. Yoga, according to her is a lifestyle choice and proved immensely valuable during outdoor shoots when she couldn't carry weights for exercising. It's perfectly scientific, safe and each asana aims at a specific body part. After a brief introduction, it's time for the Workout. Shilpa showcases the various asanas catering to various body parts while a voiceover (in a thick British accent) explains the dos and donts. Now, while she shows you how it's done, there are twin advantages for you as a viewer. The first one is that if you wish to get a detailed guide to the techniques of Yoga, you don't need to look any further. And secondly the manner in which

The C-Leg controls the resistance to rotation and extension of the knee using a hydraulic cylinder. Small valves control the amount of hydraulic fluid that can pass into and out of the cylinder, thus regulating the extension and compression of a piston connected to the upper section of the knee.

PHARMACEUTICALS NEW DRUG DISCOVERY

T

he information given about the drugs is correct and not new. Some drugs have been withdrawn from the Indian markets decades back like Phenyl Butazone and its derivative Oxyphen Butazone. These drugs were excellent analgesics (pain killers) and were household names up to the eighties by the brand names Tandril/ Suganril. They were cheap and freely available over the counter. They were found to be bone marrow depressants and caused severe impairment in the formation of blood (cells). Cisapride, likewise was a very good anti- emetic (controlled vomiting and regulated intestinal movements) but was found to cause irregularities in heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which could occasionally prove fatal. Piperazine citrate Antipar/ Alcopar) was a very popular drug for intestinal worms and few among us from Bihar wouldn't have been prescribed this drug in our childhood. This drug paralysed the worms which used to be passively expelled out with stool by the intestinal movements. The same effect but to a lesser degree was occasionally noticed upon human body as well. Furazolidine was a very popular and effective drug for intestinal amoebiasis and

37

was a component of many anti- diarrhoeal drugs available in the market, once again freely available without any medical prescription. The problem with these drugs is that they are all very effective and very cheap, and despite the possible side effects and toxicities, often prove life saving for the poor masses who cannot afford to buy modern, safer but much costlier dr ugs. Take the example of Chloramphenicol, popularly known as Chloromycetin/ Paraxin. It was a bacteriostatic drug (stopped the bacterial growth) developed in late fifties and was the first highly effective drug for Typhoid, known in our villages as "Miyadi Bukahar". It was also very effective in Whooping cough (Kukur Khansi as it is known in north Bihar villages) in children. It can cause severe bone marrow depression in one out of fifty thousands who use it. Yes, it can cause even death but in very rare circumstances. This drug saved millions of lives and for long time, was the first drug prescribed for any fever in Bihar, especially by the quacks who never bothered to, or were totally incapable of proper diagnosis of the cause of the fever. The drug was excellent when used with Penicillin (intravenous) in

PHARMACEUTICALS NEW DRUG DISCOVERY meningitis as it freely enters the brain and the fluid surrounding it (CSF) and was immediately started even before proper diagnosis as any delay in treating bacterial meningitis could be fatal or could cause severe physical and mental handicaps in those children who survived. Now the drug is withdrawn. India is a poor country and with globalisation and adoption of the capitalist economical model, International pharmaceutical companies have entered in to the Indian market on a large scale. They want more and more profit from the Indian market and if these cheap but effective drugs will continue to solve the common medical problems of the vast majority of Indians, their dreams will remain unfulfilled. True, these drugs have their own side effects but those are rare and the drugs are cheap and effective, and who knows what

March-April 2010 www.medgatetoday.com

new side effects might be discovered for the new and more costly drugs that these companies want the cheaper drugs to be replaced with? This is just an afterthought. Broadly speaking, the information provided about these drugs is correct but what is the degree of risk factor (how many people for each one hundred thousands who take the drug suffer for a particular side effect) should also be known. In case of Chloramphenicol, the risk of developing bone marrow depression (1: 50,000) is less than the chances of being hit fatally by a vehicle for a pedestrian! There are more chances for one to be crushed by a motor vehicle when walking on a city street than for developing blood toxicities by the use of Chloramphenicol. Isn't it interesting?

uantum medicine is a balanced combination of achievements in q u a n t u m physiQuantum medicine is a balanced combination of achievements in quantum physics, high information technologies, and present-day concepts of the nature and the millennium-long experience of Oriental medicine. Quantum physics is a revolution in science and technology of the 20th century. Quantum medicine is a revolution in health care of the 21st century.. Quantum therapy uses ecologically harmless modalities of electromagnetic radiation for restoring the disease. B y n ow ex t e n s ive statistics have been generated on the efficiency of quantum therapy, suggesting that it is applicable in almost all branches of medicine: Orthopedics/ traumatology Genecology Urology Cosmetology Pulmonary Sports medicine

Quantum medicine is a young rapidly developing branch of science, based on the usage of special properties of electromagnetic radiation that interacts with person, flora and fauna. On the one hand, the name of "Quantum medicine" underlines the electromagnetic origin of this new branch of medicine science, because the investigation of electromagnetic fields is the object of quantum physics, and on the other hand it points on the low and safe energy level of radiation, because QUANT is the minimal portion of

electromagnetic radiation. Quantum medicine encompasses all elements of human health care: prophylaxis, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. We u s e d t o t r e a t ourselves with medicines, injections and droppers from childhood, when the analysis

(of blood, urine, sputum) is necessary to find out the disease. But usual way of fighting the disease is not the only one and not even the best. Quantum medicine offers the other way of securing health: ecologically pure, non-invasive way which has no side effects. Quantum diagnostics. It is well-

known that the person's organism itself is the source of electromagnetic radiation. And it is established, that the radiation of sick person differs from the radiation of the same person when he is well. It is possible to say definitely about the disease of concrete patient when measuring his electromagnetic parameters in sick and healthy state by special methods and analyze the differences between them. Quantum therapy, as well as prophylaxis and rehabilitation uses electromagnetic radiation to prevent the disease and fight it. It directly acts on the certain zones and organs of patient. Characteristics of this external electromagnetic action are close to parameters of the

electromagnetic processes that go in the person's organism. This energy is very little and harmless for the organism. But thanks to resonance absorption it is enough of this energy to "repair" weak cells and raise high the immunity of the whole organism. Acting aggregately on the person's organism at extremely low energy level by constant magneto field, infrared radiation and red light apparatus of quantum therapy " R I K TA " g u a r a n t e e t h e complete safety to the patient and provide high therapeutic effectiveness, because according to the laws of biophysics the lower action provides higher level of the organism's answer: harmonization of the immune system, activation of the peripheric (capillary) blood circulation and normalization of the metabolism. The quantum medicine has proved it's effectiveness by treating of more than 200 of most common diseases. Quantum Medicine Tomorrow's Medicine Today!
