on the very best in flooring – and each product type has its own dedicated section with a detailed overview of how it will perform.
In the main living (or family) room it is possible to make a real style statement with a patterned carpet, particularly when teamed with neutral furniture and accessories throughout the room. This is a busy room in the home and it needs to cope with plenty of wear and tear, so take advice on what type of carpet will be best to meet the anticipated use. The hallway is the highest trafficked room in the home, so this needs a carpet that can cope with plenty of wear and tear. Check the quality of the carpet and go for those labelled heavy domestic or extra heavy domestic. A hardwearing type of carpet will be needed, perhaps one with an 80% wool and 20% synthetic fibre mix that will withstand plenty of foot traffic. If the hallway is likely to get an abnormal amount of traffic, you could consider using carpet tiles, which can be easily replaced or swapped around if those closest to the entrance are showing signs of wear.
Rooms that will benefit from using wood floors Wood floors can be used in any room of the house and with the factory finishes that are available today they have a mini-

carrying out these cleaning procedures. With hard floorcoverings the dirt on the floor is immediately apparent, but because the carpet fibres hold and hide the dirt and soiling until released by vacuuming, people often overlook the cleaning for long periods, which will affect the appearance and overall performance of the carpet in the long term. It has been said before that nothing compares with carpet when it comes to the ‘feel’, the comfort, the opulence it provides, the ease of installation and maintenance – and value for money. Determine the use of the room that the carpet will be installed in; the carpet must provide the comfort you are looking for, yet still withstand wear in high-traffic areas. Choose the style and design that meet your décor requirements and make sure that the carpet specification will do the job you expect it to do. To make certain that you make the right decision, visit more than one supplier or showroom to see what is available. Don’t buy cheap – it will undoubtedly be more expensive in the long term. Better to have peace of mind by investing in a quality carpet. The carpet price often reflects the quality, but you will find that there is good value for money in the lower-priced ranges. The rule of thumb is: buy the best you can afford. Make sure you select a reputable and experienced installer – look at some of his previous jobs, and ask his customers if they were satisfied. If they wouldn’t use him again, nor should you! Before you place an order with the installer, ask him if the offcuts that are left at the end of an installation are your property. This is not always the case, and asking upfront will avoid any argument or extra cost later. They can be used for any future repair work that may be required and, properly edged, they make great scatter rugs. Make sure you buy a high-quality underlay, and that it is fitted correctly. Take samples of the carpet home and view them in different light situations to make sure you still like the carpet you’ve chosen before you buy. This way you can make sure that it blends with the furnishings. Check any quote carefully so that you fully understand what you are getting. Make sure there are no hidden “extras”, and certainly don’t pay in full in advance. Speak to the fitter, and make sure you understand and are happy with the laying procedure. Points to look for are to ensure that joins do not occur in high-wear areas, and particular attention must be paid to joins on stairs – these should be avoided wherever possible. A mistake often made is to buy carpets that are too light for the area of use. This is acceptable in bedrooms, but if the area is regularly trafficked, rather consider going for a darker shade.

CARPET CONFIDENCE
The right carpet for the right room
Carpets add comfort and warmth to your home, providing a luxurious yet durable foundation for your décor and lifestyle. Whether you’re after toe-wriggling warmth in your bedroom, soft cushioning and safety in baby’s room, soundproofing your study, texture and style in the lounge and stainproof durability in the living or dining rooms, it’s important to select the right carpet for your area.

B
elgotex Carpets provide tips to select the right carpet for the right room:
1. Which area in my home am I carpeting? Your new carpet must suit the area you’re covering. High-traffic areas like entrance halls or passageways need durable carpets with patterns or textures such as Marakesh or Superweave from Belgotex Carpets to hide soiling between vacuuming. Softer carpets like the plush, cut-pile Heather Bliss or chunky Royal Berber suit bedrooms or lounges where comfort is more important. 2. Match your carpet to your lifestyle Select a carpet that caters to your family lifecycle. As a single student or young professional, your needs will be much different from newlyweds or a young family with crawling babies, pets or elderly parents. Likewise, these priorities will change as you get older. Are you

10 REASONS
Why carpet? Here’s why!
Transiton Transport is the transport company responsible for transporting many of the carpets sold in South Africa – from the factories to you. They are passionate about carpets, and have sponsored this article to show you why they love carpets – and why you should too! These are ten reasons why Transiton believes you should look

no further:
1. Affordable There is often a misconception that carpeting is expensive, but these days that is not true. Modern fibres and manufacturing techniques make carpets your most affordable and stylish choice of floorcovering.
9. Easy to clean 5. Perfectly safe With a non-slip surface that makes them safe for children, the infirm and the elderly, carpets also have a built-in softness that further reduces the risk of injury.
Carpets can be installed quickly, with no mess. They require minimum effort to clean and maintain – and, of course, they won’t crack, scratch, scuff or splinter.
6. Clinically approved Carpet is not only safe, but orthopaedic specialists confirm that they alleviate strain on backs and joints. It is said that walking barefoot on carpeting also acts as reflex massage treatment
2. Spoilt for choice Carpets are available in a wide variety of colours, textures and patterns to meet your exact needs, with styles that will complement or enhance the décor of every room in your home.
3. Dust is captured The fibres in the pile of a quality carpet trap dust until the next vacuum cleaning, so the amount of airborne dust in carpeted rooms is much lower than in bare rooms, where dust is constantly disturbed by draughts and sweeping.
7. Energy saving A carpet provides superb thermal insulation and not only feels warmer underfoot, but in fact retains 10% more ambient heat.
4. Reduction of allergens Airborne dust is a carrier of germs and allergens, but these are reduced by the dust-trapping properties of a quality carpet, which will not cause allergic reactions if regularly vacuumed, and is therefore an excellent choice for people with allergies to house-dust mites.

Modern home designs are using creative applications of epoxy and polyurethanes to replace many other expensive, high-maintenance and fragile floor surfaces, and now everyone can have great-looking floors that are not subject to mould, mildew, warping, or dissolving – and are easy to maintain. Chemically resistant, these seamless floors are made of epoxy and polyurethanes that are also resistant to dirt and stains, and impervious to water. These flow-coated surfaces stick to the flooring surface without chipping, peeling or lifting. With good preparation, they provide a permanent surface that requires little or no maintenance. Great new looks are also available. Floors can be made to look like other surfaces such as granite, tile and slate. Logos, stripes and even sparkly floors are now appearing in restaurants, garages, basements, as well as upmarket homes. They would look good in your home, too! ceramic & porcelain
CERAMIC & PORCELAIN Why ceramic or porcelain tile?
Ceramic tiles are a great option for your home because they are virtually a ‘fit and forget’ floorcovering. Well, not exactly, because they still need to be kept clean but, if looked after, they will out-
last most other types of floorcovering and will continue to complement the dĂŠcor of any room even if it changes over time.
S
o what is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tile?
Ceramic tile is a mixture of clays and other
natural materials. The special clays are mined from the earth, shaped, coloured and then fired in kilns. Traditional ceramic tiles can be naturally coloured and left unglazed (like terracotta), or they can feature coloured or highly designed surfaces which can be glazed (finished with a glass surface) in either a highgloss or matt finish. Porcelain tile is a form of ceramic tile that is extremely popular among homeowners. Porcelain tiles are composed of fine porcelain clays and fired at much higher temperatures than ceramic tiles, which makes them

denser, less porous, much harder and less

prone to moisture and stain absorption than ceramic tiles. For these reasons, most porcelain tiles are suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations, although they are generally more expensive than their ceramic sisters. Porcelain tiles are also harder to cut due to their density and hardness, and therefore are more difficult to install. Because these tiles are denser they can also be manufactured as large-format tiles and, because they are available in a wide variety of shapes besides the traditional squares of ceramic tiles, they lend themselves to imaginative floor designs. Some porcelain tiles can even be provided with the edges specially treated to provide a virtually seamless look once installed. Ceramic tile is a beautiful, tough and enduring flooring material. Apart from being available in a wide variety of styles, colours, patterns and even different tile sizes, it is resistant to almost all of the common sources of wear endured by quality flooring. Renowned for their durability, ceramic and porcelain tiles are fireproof, resistant to moisture, abrasion and tread wear, and are also stain resistant and easy to clean. Because they are so easy to keep clean, they are also very hygienic. If you are stuck for design ideas for your floor or the décor of your room, visit your nearest ceramic and porcelain tile showroom, where you will find a wonderland of ideas to get your creative juices flowing! If you have any queries on this section of The Great Flooring Guide, please contact the FLOORS in Africa Help Line on 012 347 7530 and we will put you in touch with the experts.
Buying tips
Don’t buy cheap ceramic, porcelain or terracotta tiles or you will regret it later. The same applies to the grouting, which is available in many shades and colours to form an effective part of the overall floor design. It is a good idea to purchase 10-15% extra tiles over the estimated quantity – to accommodate breakages or for replacements later, if necessary for any reason. Your installer must make sure the substructure is solid, smooth and level before laying commences, and it will pay to find out if a primer (or, in some cases, a damp-proof barrier) is required for your application before the tiles are laid. Ensure that a good-quality adhesive is used, and whoever is laying should make sure that the manufacturer’s instructions are followed to the letter in terms of spread rates and application procedures. Find out if your tiled floor needs to be sealed. (Terracotta tiles in particular may need sealing.) If you are employing a flooring contractor for tiling any floor, make sure he is experienced in this type of work. Check his references. Don’t forget that if you decide to buy imported tiles, you may need up to eight weeks for containers to arrive. (Ordering more tiles than you need is a great idea in the case of imported tiles – you may not be able to get them again!)

Preparation of the ground and substrate on which the external surface is to be applied is the critical factor in obtaining a satisfactory installation and, as each type of external floor has its own requirements, it pays to go to a specialist for whatever you want to achieve. For example, there are many reputable paving companies around – check them out, including their references before you employ one to work for you. If you are in any doubt, contact the Paving Division of the Concrete Manufacturers Association for technical information or contractor recommendations. Likewise, the Cement & Concrete Association will provide the same service for you if a cemented area is your choice, and for wooden decking the Southern African Wood & Laminate Flooring Association is your best bet.
VAN DYCK CARPETS
Looking after your external surface There is not much to be done in terms of cleaning; a weekly hose-down and brushing would seem to be sufficient. Maintenance is another story. The area needs to be kept clear of weeds, and look for any cracking of the surface, deterioration of the edges of paths, and the general appearance of the area. Although it should have been taken into account at the installation stage, you will need to keep an eye on any adjacent trees or large bushes. As their roots spread, these can seriously affect the performance of paving or pool surrounds. Any defects such as those mentioned above should be corrected by a specialist, so check your guarantee and get the same people to carry out the repairs.

uraTurf gives us the cutting edge on artificial lawn and a guide on where to use it: Q: Does it look like real grass? A: DuraTurf looks and feels just like real grass and even has blades of varying lengths and densities, just like different grass species. Best of all, DuraTurf saves both water and time as it needs no watering, mowing or weeding to stay perfectly green and manicured all year round. Q: Is it only for gardens? A: No. DuraTurf can be used to transform any area you wish! From that shady patch where the grass won’t grow, to your veranda, backyard or swimming pool, on either side or down the middle of the driveway or between stepping stones, in your gym or even in the dog’s kennel – there are eight different ranges of DuraTurf suited to specific areas. Q: Is it suitable for outdoor entertaining? A: Yes, it’s perfect for that! Spills and dirt can be washed away with normal water. Never use solvents and please refer harsh chemical stains to the manufacturers. Burns from cigarettes or hot coals from a braai should be removed as soon as possible and may discolour the grass. These can be professionally repaired but should be referred to your installer. Q: Will my dogs or kids ruin it? A: No. Just like any garden surface, DuraTurf will collect dirt from environmental exposure and from being walked upon. Simply scoop up any mess or dirt as you would with normal grass. Sweep with a soft-bristled garden broom to restore flattened blades to their upright position. Q: Can it be installed on any surface? A: DuraTurf can be installed on any flat, even surface such as concrete, stone or tar. The substrate should be flat, stable, wellcondensed and preferably porous to allow for drainage. If the subsoil is not sufficiently condensed it may shift and settle later causing irregularities in the artificial lawn.

An historic floor for your home . . .
Apart from its beauty and the fact that it will outlive you and your family, a natural stone floor offers something that no other floorcovering can – history – because it was centuries in the making!
S
tone flooring has long been considered the flooring material of choice for the
privileged and elite, but that is no longer the case. Advances in technology have helped more affordable and those savings have been passed on to modern-day consumers. In South Africa and its neighbouring countries, specifically Zimbabwe, there are quar-

able. There you will find a veritable wonderland of beautiful natural stone, both local and imported. Among the many advantages of stone is one very practical one. Natural stone flooring will virtually always increase your home’s resale value and, unlike most other types of flooring, it improves with age. A natural stone floorcovering is a lifetime investment. Its aesthetic qualities are eye-catching and sure to give you pleasure for years to come. Simple care and cleaning is all that is needed to protect this precious asset and to maintain its intrinsic beauty, but beware – lack of maintenance can become a costly experience. However, all natural stones should be sealed to prevent staining. It is important to use a penetrating sealer, as this does not change the appearance of the stone but protects it from the inside. This gives you far more time to wipe up accidental spills, as any liquid will pool on the surface and not be absorbed by the stone. While most of the information in this section refers to natural stone, there is an alternative called Manufactured or Agglomerate Stone, which is a synthetic stone product made from natural stone chips suspended in a binder, such as cement, epoxy resins or polyester, that can be used for flooring and is usually not as expensive as natural stone. Another variation on this theme is seamless quartz stone flooring using imported tumbled glacial stone that is tinted and blended with clear resins and encapsulated in polyurethane resin. It has also taken its place in the realm of fashion and design and become increasingly popular in the residential sector. If you have any queries on this section of The Great Flooring Guide, please contact the FLOORS in Africa Help Line on 012 347 7530 and we will put you in touch with the experts.

natural stone
>> FROM PAGE 35 Look after it!
NATURAL STONE WAREHOUSE
The best way to clean any natural stone floor is by using a clean mop, a mild liquid detergent and clean warm water – but the floor surface should be rinsed thoroughly after washing. The water should be changed regularly when the floor is being washed to ensure that dirt is not washed back onto the floor. Care should also be taken to ensure that not too much soap or detergent is used as this may leave a film and cause streaks on the floor. Detergents containing lemon, vinegar or acids should not be used on marble or other calcareous floors. Scouring powders and creams should also be avoided as they contain abrasives that may scratch the stone.

VINYL
Why not use resilient flooring in your home?
The common types of resilient flooring include vinyl tile and sheet flooring; PVC tiles; linoleum; rubber tile and sheet flooring; and cork, and the ease of cleaning and removing of spills is an important reason why you could happily select these for use in your kitchen, bathrooms, entryway, family rooms and almost any other part of your house or apartment, especially when used in conjunction with rugs.

Available in planks or tiles, cork floors are normally provided with a specially designed tongue-and-groove inner core to secure the planks together, and they are treated with a variety of colours and surface finishes, giving you a hardwearing, good-looking and virtually silent floor.
Rubber Rubber flooring is a versatile and durable product which is available in a wide range of colours and patterns. Properties such as sound reduction, excellent slip resistance, and resistance to cigarette burns, heavy impact loads and water all make rubber a unique product, suitable for almost any application. In general, resilient floorings seem to last forever whilst retaining their good looks. Take a look at the resilient options the next time you are considering a new floorcovering. Don’t be fooled into thinking that a thick vinyl tile is a good one – the quality, strength and performance of a vinyl tile is determined by the thickness of its wear layer. Check it with your supplier. Use a reputable flooring contractor – and check his references by visiting some of his past customers to make sure that they would use him again. The contractor must make sure that the subfloor is perfectly smooth, because any imperfection will “grin through” the floor once laid. He should also check the subfloor for moisture before laying commences, and ensure that the correct adhesive is to be used (in accordance with the recommendations of the manufacturer or the supplier). Check with your supplier or flooring contractor if the resilient flooring you have selected needs sealing. Finally, the eternal warning to the uninitiated: Don’t buy cheap – it is always expensive in the end.

Buying tips Never buy cheap wood, bamboo or laminate floorcoverings – these will not last and will require very expensive early replacement. Make sure you get a well-known brand – and a guarantee (for both the product and its installation). Use suppliers who are SAWLFA members and, especially, SAWLFA-accredited installers. Use solid wood and engineered wood suppliers that conform to FCS (The Forest Stewardship Council) and ISO14001 Environmental Management – these organisations protect and sustain forests worldwide. Check the references of both your supplier and your installer and make sure that their previous customers are still happy. Make sure you have a flat, smooth subfloor that is free of moisture. Satisfy yourself that the fixing method and the finishing details are what you expect. Is your solid or engineered wood prefinished or does it need to be sanded and sealed after

Edgings and corner pieces provide a neat appearance and make cleaning easier by preventing dirt from becoming trapped in those awkward places. One area where it is essential that the right accessories are used is that of steps or stairs – because the floor will be less than safe and certainly not as good-looking if the correct edge treatments and stair nosings are not used – to both protect the floorcovering from abnormal wear and to provide the necessary safety on the stairs. Keep it clean! The installation of quality dirt-trap matting outside the doors will pay for itself many times over in terms of protecting your floor from the ingress of dirt, grit and water – particularly with hard floorcoverings that may scratch easily. Support the outside mat with a lighter wipe mat, scatter rug or even a carpet off-cut placed inside the door, and you will then have the ideal protection system for any floorcovering. But keep these mats clean as well or else you are wasting your time putting them down in the first instance. Ask any home cleaning expert and you will hear that the most valuable accessory for the floor in any home is the vacuum cleaner. Every type of floorcovering needs vacuuming regularly – some more than others – if they are to remain in good condition, and investing in a good quality vacuum cleaner will considerably prolong the life of the floor.
