It searchable by your location or you can plan ahead and browse over a thousand UK routes, and see reviews from real riders. Clever. Dynolicious Fusion £9.99 iPhone There are a few Dyno apps out there, but so far, we like this one. Ever wondered what a personal rolling road would be like? Well, this will never be quite as finely tuned, but accuracy seems good, and it’s certainly a fun little app to play with! EatSleepRIDE £FREE iPhone / Android Record and share routes, analyse all your biking data including mileage, average and top speeds, share pictures and find exciting routes. This app is easy to use and pretty comprehensive, and can also act as a social networking tool allowing you to be visible to other riders and vice verse. There is also the possibility to upgrade to a feature called CrashLight, a clever bit of technology that the developers say uses your phone’s GPS, gyroscope and accelerometer capabilities to detect a crash and automatically notify your chosen contacts via text, voice and email. The passion involved in buying, collecting and restoring motorcycles can become all consuming, with many owners utterly dedicated to their craft. Owners clubs are a fantastic resource for any serious owner. Clubs provide a wealth of information about the history of the bikes, as well as hints and tips on maintenance, common problems and reliable workshops, they can help you to source rare parts, and be excellent places to buy and sell.

There is also the social aspect – many clubs hold regular meets and runs, raise funds for charity, offer a variety of levels of involvement, attend major exhibitions and events, and often hold social meets to show off your bike and meet like-minded owners. Membership is often annual and is usually very affordable, so check out local and national clubs and see what takes your fancy.

The Call of the

Classic Are you hankering for the open road, the wind in your face, the roar of an engine beneath you? Do you miss the days when British manufacturing really was great, and our biking industry was world famous? If so, then maybe a classic bike is for you. If you know your way around a bike then owning, restoring, repairing and, ultimately loving a classic could be just what you need. Make no mistake; this will be a labour of love. You may well be stuck on the roadside, in the pouring rain, trying to stick a spanner in the most inaccessible place on your machine. You will spend hours on the phone trying to track down an elusive part. You will be all consumed by your new hobby to the detriment of your relationship with family and friends, who may not be able to see quite the same beauty in that rusting piece of junk as you do. A whole new world will however open up to you. Perfect strangers will now come up and talk to you about your pipes or spokes; you will be offered roadside assistance by

fellow enthusiasts who will gladly take the rainlashing in order to get you and your ‘lady’ back on the road. You will need to devote time to your classic. The tinkering possibilities are infinite. The satisfaction of stripping, repairing and rebuilding a proper bike and then trusting your own work at high speeds is something that’s hard to describe. Even with the ever-reliable Japanese bikes from the 70s and 80s, there are plenty of options for modifying and improving them. One word of caution though: keep parts original otherwise it will affect the bike’s value. The classic bike enthusiast’s mantra is always ‘leave it standard’. Many classic motorbikes are owned by men, ahem, of a certain age, who are only now able to realise their dream of owning the bike that their teenage/ twenty-something dreams were made of. They can now enjoy their Yamaha TZ750 or the Kawasaki GPz750 to their hearts’ content without having to bankrupt themselves. They may be able to again buy an LC power-valve and relive their youth. They can show their sons exactly what they’ve been banging on about all these years when they said “they don’t make them like they used to”. The aficionados of the great British marques such as BSA, Triumph, Norton, Vincent and so on are well catered for with a plethora of racing and meeting clubs. With one of these old British

classics, the likelihood is you will spend many more hours in the garage than on the open road. This does not put off the hardcore though, who will regularly meet to swap parts and anecdotes. There is a very strong camaraderie in the world of vintage motorbikes, and many are members of racing clubs. Riding on the track is an excellent way to let your bike show its mettle, which is safer and more fun than on the highways. Plus thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always the added bonus of having friends with spares close by to help you out with the inevitable breakdown. Only a true bike lover will understand the devotion of time and money given to a classic. Gloves are always going to be a crucial safety item â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you might not think it, but hands are delicate and need a decent amount of protection, because human instinct tends to make us put our hands down first upon falling. Scraped fingers, skinned palms and fractured bones in your hands can be very unpleasant and leave lasting damage. Just think about what you need your hands for, and make sure those digits are adequately cared for! Many different styles and varieties of glove are available, with some bikers having various pairs for different weather and riding conditions, either leather or fabric. Consider these points:

Fit Fit is key, like all protective clothing, as they will only offer full protection if they fit as designed. This means properly tight, snug enough to fit, well, like a glove, without restricting movement or circulation. No gaps, loose or baggy patches,

covering to the wrist as a minimum. Make sure the fastenings are secure enough to keep the gloves on in the event of an accident. They should also be comfortable and suitable for the weather. Too hot, and your hands may sweat â&#x20AC;&#x201C; too light and you may lose out on protection. There are lots of all weather gloves on the market should you prefer to invest in one, more pricy pair.

Flexibility Even with a snug fit, the gloves need to be properly flexible. If they are stiff, you may get sore hands after a day gripping the handle bars, and it also helps if your fingers are free to use without having to drag a glove off every time you want a drink of water or have bike controls to change.

Stitching

Material

As with leathers, stitching is paramount. Check it is sturdy and close knit to absorb impact and avoid tearing on contact with pavement / road.

Leathers are traditional and hardy, and come in many different styles and thicknesses. Not cheap exactly, but some can be quite budget friendly and they are usually soft and comfortable. If damaged, leather can usually be repaired and is often warmer than synthetics. It can be affected by moisture though, with rain causing leather to shrink. Textile based gloves are a more modern innovation, and have strived to offer the comfort and protection of leather which is often lighter, and if it matters to you, more likely to come in a bigger range of colour designs. They are more likely to have a hard armour component, and tend to be waterproof which is a bonus for those doing a lot of biking wet weather.

Padding Leather thickness and addition armour are also key. The palm area needs to be well protected, and good padding will keep the gloves comfortable if you are off on long rides. They need to be constructed to protect against abrasion â&#x20AC;&#x201C; high speed contact with the ground needs maximum protection. Cowhide or goatskin is traditional, but you can find textile gloves with Kevlar reinforcement or carbon fibre for a tougher finish.

Established for over 100 years, the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) is the trade body for motorcycle manufacturers and importers and companies wholesaling associated products and services. The Buy With Confidence website was established to give customers clear information about the quality assurances that come with buying a new motorbike, moped or scooter from an MCI member (Motorcycle Industry Association). The scheme was set up at the request of MCI members, who were concerned about some internet based companies competing aggressively on price, while making huge compromises on quality and service. Their code of practice is in place to give peace of mind to

customers buying from MCI members, protecting them from issues which have been reported from buyers of less scrupulous manufacturers and importers. These include hidden costs, poor quality machines, expensive and limited availability of parts as well as unclear protocol over delivery, assembly and registration. The Code Of Conduct Assures That: • Motorcycles, scooters and mopeds have received the proper safety checks, are fit for purpose and match the expectations set through pre sale advertising. • Member manufacturers and importers will meet all the obligations contained in the MCIA’s Code of Practice. • If a dispute should occur, there is a complaints

process and if necessary an independent CTSI approved Alternative Dispute Resolution service which will investigate and draw matters to a legally binding conclusion. Bike Touring Holidays Have you ever fancied taking your motorcycle on an exciting adventure through the beautiful valleys of France, the breath-taking mountain scenery of the Italian Dolomites or the majesty of the Swiss Alps? Did you balk at the planning and booking of such a trip? Why not think about going on an organised bike touring holiday instead? There are a large number of British and European companies offering a huge array of organised trips lasting from as little as 4 days to as long as a few weeks. You could start with a taster to

Normandy, or go for a once in a lifetime adventure through the Himalayan region close to the Tibet border known as the rooftop of the world. Most of the tours encompass the most stunning parts of Britain, mainland Europe and beyond, and the holidays are very well organised catering for the bikers every need. Required documentation will be advised, and maps and kit lists provided by your chosen tour company. The tours through Europe tend to be guided, which means that the routes and the stop offs are set by experienced tour guides. Accommodation is pre-booked, and so are many of the meals, and there are frequent coffee/toilet breaks, so there is little for the rider to be concerned about. Riders can go at their own pace, as a marker system

will be in use to guide them to the next stop. Some tour companies grade their tours to satisfy the abilities and confidence of their clients, and most have a large degree of flexibility allowing riders to set their own itinerary where possible. A support vehicle with a trailer always accompanies the tour. This holds medical and bike supplies and can also carry a small amount of luggage. It seems the tour companies have covered all eventualities and made it so that these holidays are hassle free for bikers. These holidays are unique, exciting and sociable and for some bikers will be their ultimate riding experience. Awe-inspiring views and thrilling rides on dramatic roads are a pre-requisite for these holidays. They come highly recommended, so why not try something different this year?

Biker-Friendly Pubs & CafĂŠs, and Biker Meets If getting your bike abroad is not an option for you this year, you will want to make the most of the glorious British sunshine (when it appears) and get out on some of our beautiful scenic countryside routes. If you and your friends fancy a good ride out on a perfect summer day culminating in a visit to a biker-friendly pub or cafĂŠ, then luckily there are plenty to choose from around the U.K. There are a large amount of hostelries that will welcome your slightly oil-stained cash with glee, providing a great meeting place for bikers as well as giving you a good destination for your trip. Many of the pubs are also family friendly and offer food, and there are also a plethora of biker friendly campsites to choose from if you are planning a slightly longer trip. Some of the pubs in particular hold specific biker days or evenings, or have bike meets listed. Biker meets are usually held on a regular basis, often every week or once a month and are mostly organised by local bike clubs. These are always very welcoming to new members or fellow riders who may just be passing through and are great for meeting fellow bikers and getting a nose at lots of different rides and their owners. Track Days Track riding is excellent fun and highly addictive. Many riders see it as an opportunity to get their machine onto the tarmac and push it, and themselves, to their very limits. Getting the fastest possible speed is of course a huge thrill, but there is more to a track day than simply speed. A day on circuit also has the benefits of placing you in a properly safe environment to learn about your bike, how it handles and its limits. It will also be a fine test of your riding, giving you an opportunity to take the time to practice new techniques without street obstacles, slippery fuel on the road or too much other traffic should you run wide. If this is your first booked track day, take it easy. Start with the beginners group, as you can usually move up through the groups during your days riding and you will be able to get a real feel for the track and how it is run. There will be strict rules which you must adhere to, these are set for your safety and the safety of those around you, so make sure you listen carefully at the initial briefing and take note. If you do not, you may find you are asked to finish your days ride which would be a shame.

When you book, take the time to research requirements such as: • Clothing. Most tracks require a full one piece set of leathers, or a two piece firmly zipped together. Check for any helmet regulations, and if their website isn’t clear, do ring and ask, especially if you are travelling some distance to attend. No one wants to be turned away. • Start time. Arrive in plenty of time to be prepared so that you can take proper notice of the briefing without rushing and get a feel for the track and its organisers. • Flags. When you listen to the briefing, make sure you fully understand the flag system in place to avoid any mishaps later on. • Your sighting lap. It is your opportunity to feel out the corners and get a handle on distances. Use it wisely, concentrate and think your way round. • Speed. The track is definitely the right place to test your mettle, and that of your bike, but don’t get cocky. Stick to the overtaking rules explained in the briefing, and don’t race. • Home. Don’t forget to take some time out at the end of the day if you will be riding home – it can be easy to slip into bad track style habits out on the open road which with traffic and rather different conditions can be very dangerous indeed.

Track Schools & Race Schools There is a big difference between a Track Day and a Race School. There are a number of race schools around the UK at which you will experience new riding techniques and get to push yourself and your bike to new limits under the expert tuition of some of the very best riders in the country. Each Track or Race school will have its own philosophy, teaching techniques and objectives, but they all aim to achieve the same result whether on track or on road they are looking to make you a better, more competent rider. Very few of us have the skills to get the best out of the bikes that we ride. A Track School will narrow the gap between the ability of the bike and the ability of the rider. You will be amazed at what you

are capable of when instructed well in the safe environment of the track. Many of the same guidelines apply to attending a Track Day and a Track School, but you will receive full briefing packs from most schools so you will know what to expect. When looking for a Track or Race School you should do your homework. Check online and talk to friends and get recommendations. Choose a school which will give you the experience and the skills that you are looking to develop. Most of all – enjoy the experience.

Off Road Schools Riding off road is recognised as one of the very best ways to improve your handling skills. Many top riders from all sectors of motorcycle

Many Off Road Schools operate up and down the country and they offer different courses, but most will provide a beginners course for those new to the country lanes and byways. Most riders who go to Off Road Schools do not have an off road bike so nearly all of them will hire a bike as part of the course. They will also provide the specialist clothing that you will need – or at the very least a robust set of water proofs. You may be thinking of taking up a manufacturer’s course – more and more of them offer courses to complement the more rugged bikes in their ranges. These can be very useful as they will be developed around the bike that you ride. By their very nature many Off Road Schools are situated in areas which

are ‘off the beaten track’ and so you may find that you will have to travel. Remember that you will have a very full and extremely exhausting day, so try to plan your off road experience accordingly – maybe staying nearby rather than having a long ride or drive to get to your chosen location. Many Off Road Schools encourage younger riders and you will find that many have an age limit of 10 or 11 years as long as they are tall enough to safely handle the bike. sport and professional riding use off road training to develop their techniques. Off Road Schools are great fun in all weathers and if you have never spent a day off road before, you should really enjoy the experience.

Do you love the thrill of off-roading? It can be an addictive pastime, meaning you have probably already spent good money (and lots of time) exploring some of the fantastic British countryside near your home and further afield. With a summer as wonderful as the one we have just had, it stands to reason you probably haven’t thought too much about enjoying a different landscape in which to get your wheels off the road, but what about next year? With ongoing temperatures unheard of in the UK since 1976, 2018 has been a great year for bikers and off-roaders, but now you have the big, perhaps it is time to look at tours abroad? There are a plethora of European tour operators from France to Spain and Germany, mostly offering glorious sunshine, rugged, exciting treks through idyllic, unspoiled landscapes and lots of warm hospitality, excellent food and good wine. You usually will need a valid EU or UK motorcycle licence, and be able to actually ride – many tours are not really recommended for complete novice riders as the terrain can be fairly challenging and you want to make sure you will be able to keep up and really enjoy the experience, although usually road experience is ample and any good tour guide will be able to instruct. You will need to ensure you carry your licence at all times when riding and check with your tour organiser

that your licence is valid for use with their vehicles. Decide which location you would like to travel to – would you prefer sun and sangria in Spain, or something wilder in Eastern Europe? Look for a recommended organiser – find one you like and then check them out on social media / forums and amongst friends. What sort of trails do they run? Are they suitable for you and your travelling party’s skill levels and requirements? IS the leader experienced in the local terrain and able to match your pace as well as recommending experiences? Some tours organise accommodation, which removes the stresses of finding a good bed for the night; useful if you haven’t toured abroad, although of course with Air B’n’B and other similar sites it has become much easier to find comfortable accommodations if you prefer to book yourself. As we go to press, Brexit has still not been negotiated, so UK residents are still able to use their EHIC card which works to offer reciprocal state funded health cover, basically meaning you can use it to cover the same healthcare as local residents, i.e. free where it would be or paid where not. Either way, don’t rely on this – off roading has its dangers and a good action travel policy is vital. Most tour operators insist upon proper cover to make sure repatriation to the UK, lost baggage, kit and more is covered.

SECURITY MATTERS Whether you have painstakingly restored a beautiful vintage Lambretta or ride something modern and functional to get you to work, if you are reading this then your scooter is probably your pride and joy. Unfortunately all bikes and scooters are prime fodder for thieves, and losing something you love and have spent time and money on is just not a risk worth taking. For some owners, a restoration, respray or customisation is worth hundreds of pounds, so why worry about investing a few pounds and some of your time keeping you investment safe? Scooters can be stolen to order, by joyriders or simply opportunists, and unfortunately for us, can be quite easy to make away with as they can simply be lifted and spirited away. Security measures don’t have to cost the earth, and in fact should help to reduce your insurance premiums as many insurers will offer discounts based on good security.

The Basics: At home, use a garage or rear garden – out of sight is out of mind. If the space isn’t available, consider a quality lock up cabinet which can be fixed to the ground and properly locked. It doesn’t have to be huge to take a scooter and will offer peace of mind. If you use a shed or garage with windows, consider obscurity film or spray on the windows, so any opportunists cannot peer in and see what is available. Use the space every time you are home, in case any scouting, would-be thieves are in the area casing local properties for items of value. A ground anchor is a good idea. You need one especially suitable for a scooter, and a long enough chain to reach around the foot boards. If you have a driveway or concrete patio, then it is simply a case of a hammer drill and masonry bit; if not, you will need to sink a concrete block / dig a hole to fill and attach to that. Some riders (or their wives!) prefer to cover the concrete with a layer of bark, gravel or similar to hide the concrete underneath, so if aesthetics is an issue this might work for you. Obviously, your scooter will often be out and about and there will be plenty of occasions where

you need to leave it in a public place. Some towns offer secure lock up locations, but if you are not in that sort of city, then follow the basics. Invest in an excellent lock, and fix the scooter to something securely bolted to the ground. Metal railings, bike stands, street lamps or even a sign post will do – anything high enough or enclosed to stop possible thieves lifting the vehicle up and over. Make sure you choose a busy location rather than tucked away where potential robbers can hide away without fear of being disturbed. Locks. A good strong lock is an excellent visible deterrent, making it not worth anyone’s time to attempt to lift the scooter without detection. If you have good under seat storage, then consider a variety of devices. The Oxford Monster Chain lock is an excellent heavy duty Thatchum approved lock manufactured from hardened boron steel casing an 11mm steel chain with an ultra strong padlock and a good choice on a reasonable budget. If budget is les of an issue there are some super options at the higher end of the market, and these may be lighter to carry around while retaining their strength – check your local supplier for details. An alarmed padlock is also a great idea, adding addition deterrent which should put all but the most determined off. For added protection, consider a disc lock. These are simple to use, and can be purchased as kits in different sizing to suit the smaller scooter wheels, clipping in to the front disc and immobilising the scooter. Some brands also come with an alarm for an extra layer of security. Grip / throttle locks fit over the grip and brake

lever, keeping the brake in the on position, making it impossible to wheel the scooter away should the chain not hold. Most are adjustable to fit a variety of sizes of bike or scooter but do you research to pick the brand which will fit best. A Croc lock works in much the same way, fitting in a pincer style grip in the same location, and is an even more visible deterrent. Handlebar locks can be a good option if there are no solid objects to anchor your scooter to. Although the risk of the vehicle simply being lifted is still there, a handle bar lock is difficult to remove and a very obvious sign you have taken good care of your security. These are easy to use and lock the handle bars to the frame making the bike absolutely immobile. Marking the scooter with vin number, postcode and registration number should be a must. Simple pens can be purchased in most good vehicle accessory shops, and some local police constabularies hold regular days which can offer more sophisticated UV systems. Datatag is the most well know system, which marks the scooter with a visible deterrent, so anyone looking for parts instead of the entire vehicle should be put off, but also a high tec transponder system enabling you or the police to identify the scooter and any parts if they should be found. It is a good system with a one off cost, which means no annual fees and the system is also a good selling point as registration can be transferred should you sell it. Alpha Dot works in a similar way, but is a very simple to apply system where you paint on a special substance containing thousands of tiny dots all printed with your unique pin or serial number.
