Better Boating Our simple tips to improve your skills, keep you safe, and make for the most enjoyable sailing experience
Safety • Do not forget to wear your buoyancy jacket when boarding or leaving your boat and in any unsafe situations. Check your life jackets for any damage or wear regularly and make sure fastenings are secure. • Ensure children are closely supervised at all times. • Keep to a clear course to avoid any possible collisions, and stick to the right hand bank. • Do not drink and drive. Being in charge of a boat under the influence is very dangerous. • Don’t drink canal or river water, and avoid contact with particularly dirty water where you see foam or scum • Wash properly after partaking in water based activities, and ensure any cuts or scratches are covered properly in a waterproof dressing. Generally, it is a wise idea to make sure your boat is clean and tidy. Rinse after saltwater outings to remove residues, using cleaning solution specifically designed for boats, and a spray cleaner or long handled boat brush. If you have an outboard engine, check your propellers before each outing to make sure everything is properly secure, and to check for fishing line or other debris. Any dents or nicks should be inspected by a professional. Check all fluid levels - engine oil, coolant, power steering and so on fairly regularly as you would with any motorised vehicle. Keep an eye on cables and electrical connections for cleasniness and to make sure they are properly fitting. Electrics and engine – a few quick checks before every single trip can save an awful lot of time and energy. Check for any leaks, loose leads or particular rust spots, as keeping these well maintained can stop breakdowns and
issues later on. Make sure your oil is fresh and in good condition, and make sure you change your fuel filter regularly to avoid any run in’s with diesel bug. Paintwork – look after your paintwork well to avoid costly repainting jobs. Use a simple wax; polish (check manufacturers specifications) once in a while to help protect the boat, and be aware that consistently mooring facing in one direction can mean one side deteriorates much more rapidly than the other. Battery issues – as you will be using the battery as a power source for items such as fridges or lighting, you can end up with a flat battery after an overnight mooring. To avoid these, try to minimise the use of such power hungry items. Choose a low powered fridge, and consider switching to LED lighting which uses considerably less power than traditional lighting. Overnight mooring – check the depth of your chosen mooring spot to ensure that there will be sufficient depth to avoid going aground. Try marking your boat pole to a depth slightly more than you need, and use this to probe the depths to ensure they are steep enough and check for any protruding rocks or similar. Reverse propellers – a quick and simply way to clear any dead leaves, weed or debris from the rudder and keep maximum efficiency. Use short bursts on the throttle to free them, and when you move forwards you should see any debris floating free. Old rope – no, not money for, but use older ropes for mooring rather newer, as these will be left out in all conditions. This way you can preserve your newer, more expensive rope for cruising.

Chart Plotters The recent leaps and bounds forward made with GPS and touch screen technology have bought a plethora of touch screen electronic chart plotters on to the market. A good starting point here would be to get yourself to one of the major boat shows, perhaps London or Southampton, as here you will have an opportunity to fiddle with a whole host of different brands and models. Like phones,
users tend to develop a brand loyalty, some preferring different features and functions to others, so it is a good idea to really test what is available before settling on a particular version. If you are considering investing in one of these nifty gadgets, here’s a quick round up of what’s on the market:
GPSMAP® 8000 Series GPSMAP® 700 Series
Garmin Garmin are an old favourite on the market and manufacture a wide range of marine equipment, including chart plotters which range from very simple models to the new 8000 series. GPSMAP® 8000 Series (RRP from approx £3,000) The GPSMAP® 8000 series are modern generation navigation equipment and are the flagship products in the current line. This waterproof device comes in 8”, 12” or 15” variations, with a handy and easy to use multi touch display which enable pinch to zoom and is wonderfully responsive. The units come with a multitude of features, including integrated auto pilot, sonar technology, engine data and a variety of apps. You can also use GarminHelm on your phone to link devices in SmartMode, switching simply between the two when required. Speed and connectivity are very fast indeed in this
8
generation, allowing real time plotting which is very fluid. Supported sailing features include laylines, enhanced wind rose, heading and course-over-ground lines, true wind data fields, and tide/current/time slider. It is also FusionLink and Meteor entertainment compatible, allowing you to access radio and digital music direct. GPSMAP® 700 Series (RRP from approx £800) The 700 series are miniature, budget touch screen chart plotters from Garmin. The 700 has a 7” WVGA touch screen display which also includes pinch to zoom, and can shift seamlessly between automotive and marine mode. It has autopilot compatibility and media integration too, as well as sailing features similar to the 7000 Series. You can use Garmin Helm with these products, as well as BlueChart Mobile which is a free app download for Apple products to plot your route and then download to your plotter.

Shared Boat Ownership Boat sharing, or a boat syndicate agreement, is not a new idea, but one which is gaining increasing ground amongst eager would be boat owners who long to own a boat but are not financially equipped. In the current climate, boating is a luxury for some, and this offers a method for ownership which hopefully will not break the bank.
What is boat sharing? A boat syndicate might comprise of 4, 6 or 10 families who each own a share, much like a time share, of a specific boat. A share can vary from around 8%, which equates to 4 weeks use of the boat each year, to around 25%. Each shareholder owns a portion of the boat in accordance with their share, and is therefore responsible for the same percentage of running costs and so on. Decisions are made jointly, some managed by the owners, some managed by a management company who work on behalf of the joint owners. This is different to a timeshare, where you purchase right of use. Shares can vary, but the ownership agreement should make unequal shares and any issues arising, such as time with boat and proportion of costs paid to avoid any difficulties.
What are the costs? Owning a share on a boat or yacht is of course a much more cost effective way of owning a boat, allowing you to in effect only pay for the time with the boat you can actually realistically use. Boats are not just expensive to buy outright, but also have high running costs – a rough estimate put standard costs at in the region of 10% of the purchase price. If you choose to enter a boat share scheme, these costs will obviously be divided amongst the owner, although if you choose a syndicate who use a management company, there will likely be these fees to pay annually as well.
What is on offer? There is an awful lot of variety available, from day cruisers and sailing yachts to the
10
sort of mega yacht that wouldn’t look out of place on a James Bond set. Budget is entirely personal, and much may depend on the type of use you are planning on making of your boat share.
The advantages: • The ability to purchase a larger, more modern boat on a minimal budget. • Only paying for the proportion of the year you would reasonably use. • Sharing any depreciation in value over the ownership period. • Sharing the costs of maintenance, mooring and repairs. • Stops you feeling ‘guilty’ for not using your boat enough. • Yacht sharing lessens the environmental impact of boat ownership. Fractional yacht sharing seems to be a rapidly budding industry, and there is plenty of detail online about management companies, and ‘how to’ guides for more information.
Shared BOAT OWNERSHIP method for ownership which hopefully will not break the bank

Inland Regulations Whether your boat is in private use or commercial use, it is important to be aware which Authority presides over the waterway you are on, to ensure that you are complying with the correct regulations. With over 3,000 miles of canals and navigable rivers available for you to enjoy, boating on the UK inland waterways has many delights to offer. Since the end of the second world war, when many of the canals lay derelict, this transport system of the 18th and 19th centuries has been revived for leisure and relaxation. There are however regulations for private pleasure craft as well as for boats that are in use commercially. Boats that are not “going to sea” i.e. remaining within Categorised Waters (as defined in MSN 1827), may come under
12
the jurisdiction of a Harbour Authority, a Local Authority or a Navigation Authority. A Navigation or Harbour Authority’s jurisdiction will have clearly defined boundaries, which will often be marked on charts and within these boundaries they will normally be the authorities responsible for making bye laws and issuing local notices to mariners in relation to navigation, although the Local Authority may also have a limited power to regulate navigation within its jurisdiction. Whether your boat is in private use or commercial use, it is important to be aware which Authority presides to ensure that you are complying with the correct regulations. In general private pleasure craft will not find any nasty surprises with regards manning regulations, boat build or equipment other than within the jurisdiction of a Navigation
ensure that you are complying with the correct regulations in the waterway you are on. Authority that has adopted the Boat Safety Scheme. It is much more likely that commercially operated boats that do not go to sea will need to comply with boat build and equipment requirements and there are now mandatory manning regulations for most commercial craft. Various historic Public Health Acts give Local Authorities the power to licence pleasure craft let for hire within their jurisdiction and to regulate the use of other pleasure craft. Although their authority only extends to 1000m offshore, it does give them control over vessels operating from their “patch”. The operator of a small commercial vessel carrying up to 12 passengers which does not go to sea could choose to comply with the relevant MCA code for sea going vessels,
which as a national scheme, will normally exempt them from the local regulations or could comply with the Local Authority’s regulations. The Inland Waters Small Passenger Boat Code was produced jointly by the MCA and the Association of Inland Navigation Authorities (AINA) to provide a national framework, which local authorities could apply in full or in part as is applicable to their waters. The Inland Waters Small Passenger Boat Code covers equipment, build and manning and which elements of it are applied (if any) is up to the Local Authority; they can of course set totally different regulations if they feel that way inclined. This remains the case for build and equipment, but since the revision of the Boatmaster’s Licence (BML) manning falls under MSN 1808, which makes the Boatmaster
13
Licence an acceptable alternative to any licence required under Local Authority byelaws or other local legislation. Under the jurisdiction of a Navigation Authority the situation differs, as a Navigation Authority may have power to licence all navigation i.e. private pleasure craft as well as commercial vessels. Several Navigation Authorities require that vessels under their jurisdiction are registered and have a navigation licence. The main navigations authorities include British Waterways, the Environment Agency and the Broads Authority but 26 authorities are members of the Association of Inland Navigation Authorities (AINA). British Waterways and the Environment Agency jointly own the Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) which specifies the requirements boats must usually meet before they can be issued with the BW or EA navigation licence required for many of the UK’s rivers and canals. The Boat Safety Scheme is intended to ensure that boat systems such as electrical systems, engines and fuel systems, electrical propulsion systems, LPG systems and fire extinguishers, are properly installed and maintained. As well as applying to the BW and EA waterways, the Boat Safety Scheme has been adopted by most of the navigation authorities represented by the Association of Inland Navigation Authorities; this includes the Broads Authority. Additionally the BSS has been adopted by some harbour authorities and private marinas,
14
so it is important to check if the BSS applies where you are boating. The BSS applies to some extent to most boats including small commercial vessels and private pleasure craft, but not all. If the vessel carries fuel, has domestic cooking, heating, refrigerating or lighting appliances, a BSS examination will be required unless the craft is covered by an exemption, such as having been CE marked under the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) within the last 4 years. Although boating inland on a temporary basis does not negate the need to comply with the BSS, visiting boats may find that the applicable navigation authority will issue a short term licence without the need for a BSS examination; a declaration by the owner that the vessel is compliant is likely to be required and the owner must be willing to allow spot checks if requested. For further information consult the BSS Essential Guide available from the BSS web-site. In addition to the Boat Safety Scheme, boats in commercial use for sport or pleasure, which carry no more than 12 passengers, do not carry cargo and do not go to sea (leave categorised waters as defined in MSN 1827) should be aware of that the Inland Waters Small Passenger Boat Code may still apply. For example for such boats, that wish to obtain a BW navigation licence, a declaration of compliance with the code is required.
In summary:

Classic & Vintage Boats Restoring a Classic Boat If you are a sailor, sailing a wooden boat is one of the most pleasurable, satisfying feelings in the world. The admiring glances from bystanders will fill you with pride, especially if you have restored the boat to its former, glorious standard with your own blood, sweat and tears. The passion that you feel for your wooden craft is something that a GRP, steel or aluminium boat can never compete with. Wood on water is the perfect marriage of man and nature. The most cost effective way to own a wooden boat is to buy a restoration project and restore it yourself. As well as being a way of buying your boat at excellent value, it can be
26
very rewarding to pick up a cheap project and rebuild and repair it at your own pace, spreading the cost as you work. For the amateur, however, the problem is knowing where to start. There are many books on the subject of boat restoration, and these can be an invaluable starting point, although do be aware that sometimes they are produced with conflicting advice from different writers. Seasoned professionals, or enthusiastic amateurs with their own experiences of rebuilding and restoring usually write these books. Experts tips can give you insights into shortcuts that could save you hours.
It is likely that this will be a long-term project as repairing and restoring can be both costly and time consuming. Do remember that the bigger the boat the higher the likely costs for rebuilding as well as maintenance and mooring. It is advisable to start small but also to buy the right boat for your needs. You may find the boat you wish to buy through adverts in boating magazines but if you’re after a real bargain, then boatyards and marinas often have old, abandoned boats that the yard owners have repossessed to pay outstanding charges and it is well worth searching them out. If this is your first project, then start small and simple with an 8” flat-bottomed rowboat, or pram. You will need an ice pick to diagnose the state of the pram. Use the ice pick to test the condition of the hull. The wooden planks may have become soft if they are starting to rot. Test the planks on the outside, the inside and also the boat’s ribs to ascertain what needs replacing. Ideally, the wood should be too hard for the ice pick to penetrate but, obviously, in a very old boat some softness must be anticipated. Check every inch of the pram, even the awkward hard-to-reach places. In particular, check any place that
water may have pooled when the boat was not in use, as this is the most likely area to experience rot. The rotten or soft timber will need replacing. Use a wood like cedar or fir for the planks, and a harder wood such as oak for the ribs. If your hull is slightly rounded then you will need to steam the planks first so that they can be bent into a curve before being nailed onto the hull. This will require help, as steaming and bending before the wood cools and hardens again is a tricky process. The next important task is to caulk the boat’s seams so that it is waterproof. Apply a marine use caulking and take your time to ensure that you don’t skip any areas, after all your hard work a leak would be very unwelcome. Finally, seal the boat with a good marine sealant and maybe even a fresh lick of paint, and you re ready to set sail!
It’s the most pleasurable, satisfying feeling in the world. 27

Propeller Cleaning Propellers are easily overlooked, but the effect of having a dirty or rough surfaced propeller can be quite significant, particularly from a fuel consumption perspective. When weighed against the actual costs of regularly cleaning and maintaining a propeller, it makes sense to keep maintenance regular and avoid overspending on excess fuel. Accumulations of even a millimetre of fouling or calcium deposit can make a significant amount of roughness, and more so has really quite a drastic effect, especially in light of current fuel prices. Marine fouling is almost inevitable, and corrosion or mechanical damage also have a role to play in affecting the smoothness of your
32
propellers. The solution is to clean propellers every month or so, gently, so as to avoid over polishing which can in itself make the problem worse. Cleaning and polishing involves the removal of fouling growth and calcium deposits, and smoothing of minor scratches and corrosion. Done rapidly with harsh abrasives or tools, this polishing can in fact leave scratches behind which although not immediately visible, will provide perfect conditions for fouling and a key for calcification, which actually speeds up the reoccurrence of fouling and making the condition worse than when you started. A Class I propeller needs to have smoothness under the 1.6 micron (CLA) Ra tolerance for
The solution for keeping your boat happy, is to clean propellers every month optimum performance. For major fouling or corrosion, it is always recommended to take your propeller to a professional to ensure problems are correctly dealt with. If you will be undertaking the basic cleaning and maintenance of your propeller, there are a host of methods and tools available, and the internet is teeming with suggestions, including brushes, solvents, acids and sand paper. Modern propellers are often manufactured from stainless steel, or an alloy, making them fairly resistant to corrosion, so it will be mainly calcium deposits and marine fouling such as slime, barnacles or moss which must be
removed. These can be gently chipped away, being careful not to create any scratches or dents. Pressure washing should help to remove any remaining slime. Inspect the blades for nicks or dents, which should be filed down to prevent them creating unwanted drag. Use the correct grade paper (ask at your chandlery) for sanding until the entire propeller is smooth and uniformly shiny. There are lot’s of different types of anti fouling treatments available to try and reduce the affects of fouling, from special paints which create a slick surface and hopefully repel marine life. Greases and compounds of various types are also available, ask your local supplier for recommendations.

Wetsuits Whether it’s for surfing or snorkelling, a wetsuit is a hefty purchase, designed to keep you warm and safe in the water, and there a variety of types and thicknesses depending on your intended activity, geographical location and expected temperatures. A wetsuit is not designed to keep you dry, but to trap a thin layer of water next to your skin which is heated by your body temperature and once warm, helps maintain your body heat. When choosing a suit, be sure to tell your supplier what you will be using it for. Different brands may suit certain activities, and seasons, weather conditions and so on can all affect how much protection you may need. If the majority of your Watersports will take place in UK waters, then a warmer suit obviously makes sense; but if you are jetting off to tropical climes on a regular basis you may want to look at something lighter. Neoprene is available as single lined or mesh neoprene to keep it comfortable inside (and make it easier to put on and take off!); the mesh also makes the neoprene warmer by improving run off and reducing the resulting wind chill. Double lined usually has a nylon lining both inside and out, adding layers for extra
insulation and durability. Most neoprene has a certain amount of titanium; those which are marked titanium lined will also add increased warmth, which is useful for those looking for a thinner but efficient suit. Insulated neoprene suits come in a variety of thicknesses, from 2/5mm to 7mm, in different lengths and as single or two pieces. The lighter short suits are more suitable for sunny beaches, tropical diving and so on, while the thicker are better for colder water temperatures. Seam construction also plays a part. On heavy duty suit, blindstitched seams are useful – this is where they are bound initially with glue and then stitched, providing a better seal and a warmer finish. Modern suits are also seamed with liquid neoprene which also helps the seal. Flatlock is a different stitch, which you would probably recognise from clothing construction, which works to create a flat, comfortable seam, but the method is only really suitable for wetsuits of up to 3mm, making it unsuitable on heavyweight suits. Zip length and position is also worth considering – a back zip is usually longer and easier to get in via, but will have more stitching and therefore seams to allow water penetration – see what’s available and how

you feel about donning the suit with the available zips. Depending on the thickness and construction method you choose, you will be able to narrow down brands and types of suit, at which point you must consider sizing. A good fit is important, and its an excellent idea to take advice on this if you are new to wetsuits as they can feel very strange to the uninitiated. A diving wetsuit should be snug to the point of tight, without restricting movement or breathing. Too loose will allow too much water to penetrate, meaning you lose the benefit of the warmer water trapped close to your skin. Check for a snug fit at the wrist and ankle openings – the neck too, but it will need to be looser and more comfortable here. Many modern suits come with built in anti chafing necklines to make them more comfortable to wear snugly around the neck.
Dry your suit inside out. This gives the double benefit of making the inside driest should you wish to put it on before it has fully dried (very much easier!) and also will further protect the exterior surface from light and heat. Follow the manufacturers cleaning instructions properly – heat, detergents and chemicals will all affect the neoprene, so stick to the recommended products to keep your suit in tip top condition. Store the suit on a proper hanger which won’t leave creases or indents and damage the rubber.
Once the decision and investment have been made, it is worth putting in the time and effort to take care of your wetsuit properly. Follow the manufacturer’s instruction properly to avoid voiding the warranty, and remember: Heat affects neoprene and can degrade the rubber, as well as making it harder and more inflexible. Never rinse or shower with hot water. Don’t dry in direct sunlight or leave the suit in a baking hot vehicle.

Preparing and making the most of your motor cruising Motor cruising can be one of the most relaxing pastimes imaginable. In order to ensure you really do get the most out of any trip you should be prepared with respect to all aspects of the trip whether it be a day trip or a few days at sea. Before each and every boat trip however short, you should make a number of safety checks to ensure the safety of you and your crew. The following essential checks should be made prior to any trip at sea or in the river: • Have you and your crew each got a lifejacket? • If you have got a VHF radio, call your marina to check it is functioning correctly. • Check that your oil, petrol or diesel levels are adequate for the trip that you are about to make. • Tell others where you are going • Check that your flares are still within the use by date. • Check the weather forecast and tides. • Check the condition of the boat and its
equipment. If you have a tender (dinghy and outboard) check that the engine on the outboard is functioning correctly, since as a last resort the tender and outboard may need to be used. • Carry a tool kit and essential spares For more detailed information please see www.rnli.org.uk Before going out to sea and for your family and any passenger’s sake, you must ensure you at least have all the basic sea skills, including navigation, rules of the water, use of safety equipment and boat/engine maintenance. It is well advised as a minimum measure to attend Level 1 and Level 2 powerboat courses which are usually 1 and 2 days respectively. The cost of these is usually about £200 to £300. The Level 2 will also give you the ICC (International Certificate of Competency), which will enable you to cruise your boat abroad. After you have ensured you have completed all the essential safety checks, you can consider all the essential items to enjoy a pleasurable cruise.
Motor Cruising on a hot summer’s day • Take your swimming costume and towels. At any time you might want to put the
76
anchor down and take a swim. If you are really keen you may want to take the opportunity to swim around your boat and clean parts of the hull that you can’t usually reach whilst you are in your marina. • A small gas barbeque is always invaluable on a hot sunny day. Anchor up, take your tender to the beach and enjoy. Keep an eye out for beaches that do not allow BBQ’s and don’t forget to pack the food • If you are taking children out on the boat then ensure that there are a few games and things for them to do whilst cruising. You may be happy doing nothing, just watching the coastline but kids quickly get bored. Take a bucket and spade, a ball, or whatever your kids enjoy, so that if and when you go to the beach they have activities to keep them amused. • Ensure that you have plenty of drinks (soft drinks) and be very careful when drinking alcohol. Currently there are no alcohol limits at sea, but for safety’s sake you or a competent member of your crew must at all times be ready in case of emergency • Before you go out on a trip check that the water is filled, so that when you get out of the water you can have a fresh water shower if your boat is equipped • It is always sensible to take along some spare clothes and warm clothes, even in the summer, as when the sun goes down out at sea you can quite quickly find yourself getting cold, especially if you are cruising along at 30m knots, in the early evening.
Motor Cruising on a cold winter’s day Most of the same safety points apply, but in winter wrap up very warm – gloves extra coats thermals, as it can be colder than ski-ing during mid winter. If your own private motor cruiser is out of your budget, you can always consider chartering a motor cruiser. Because of their cost they will usually have their own skipper, and you can pay anything from £400 for ½ day to £1000 for a full day, depending on the size of the boat you decide to charter.
Motor cruising can be one of the most relaxing pastimes imaginable

About
Surf Hire Safety
82
This scheme is a joint venture between the RNLI and the BSA. It is all about reducing the level of surf-related incidents in the UK. Last year over 40% of RNLI lifeguard activity involved surf-related activity (the highest single pursuit). Surf Hire Safety is aimed at the hire sector that is largely unregulated and offers varying levels of advice and good practice within their operations. There are currently 1000s of outlets supplying relatively dangerous goods (especially when in the wrong hands) for hire: from large commercial businesses to one man and his van operations. Surf Hire Safety aims to introduce a voluntary code of practice, which allows people renting surfing equipment to know they are using safe and reliable kit.
Information for surfers Stay safe in the surf Look out for this logo and choose a scheme member when hiring your board. What does it mean? Members of the surf hire safety scheme have agreed: • to only rent equipment suitable to your ability • to provide safety information to all customers • to check equipment regularly for damage. • to maintain adequate insurance. Other ways to stay safe in the surf • Wherever possible, always surf at a lifeguarded beach and follow the advice of the lifeguards. • Novices should only ever surf between the black and white flags. • Ask a lifeguard for advice on where to surf. • Always have a lesson at an approved BSA or ISA school. • Always wear your leash. • If you get into trouble never abandon your board - it will keep you afloat. Wave your hand and shout for help. • Never surf alone. • Never surf between the red and yellow flags. • Never drop in on another surfer.
