Better Boating For Beginners Our very simple tips to improve your skills, keep you safe, and make for the most enjoyable sailing experience: Safety • Do not forget to wear your buoyancy jacket when boarding or leaving your boat and in any unsafe situations. Check your life jackets for any damage or wear regularly and make sure fastenings are secure. • Ensure children are closely supervised at all times. • Keep to a clear course to avoid any possible collisions, and stick to the right hand bank. • Do not drink and drive. Being in charge of a boat under the influence is as dangerous as on the road. • Don’t drink canal or river water, and avoid contact with particularly dirty water where you see foam or scum • Wash properly after partaking in water based activities, and ensure any cuts or scratches are covered properly in a waterproof dressing. Generally, it is a wise idea to make sure your boat is clean and tidy. Rinse after saltwater outings to remove residues, using cleaning solution specifically designed for boats, and a spray cleaner or long handled boat brush. If you have an outboard engine, check your propellers before each outing to make sure everything is properly secure, and to check for fishing line or other debris. Any dents or nicks should be inspected by a professional. Check all fluid levels - Check engine oil, coolant, power steering and so on fairly regularly as you would with any motorised vehicle. Keep an eye on cables and electrical connections for cleanliness and to make sure they are properly fitting. Electrics and engine – a few quick checks

4

before every single trip can save an awful lot of time and energy. Check for any leaks, loose leads or particular rust spots, as keeping these well maintained can stop breakdowns and issues later on. Make sure your oil is fresh and in good condition, and make sure you change your fuel filter regularly to avoid any run in’s with diesel bug. Paintwork – look after your paintwork well to avoid costly repainting jobs. Use a simple wax polish (check manufacturers specifications) once in a while to help protect the boat, and be aware that consistently mooring facing in one direction can mean one side deteriorates much more rapidly than the other. Battery issues – as you will be using the battery as a power source for items such as fridges or lighting, you can end up with a flat battery after an overnight mooring. To avoid this, try to minimise the use of such power hungry items. Choose a low powered fridge, and consider switching to LED lighting which uses considerably less power than traditional lighting. Overnight mooring – check the depth of your chosen mooring spot to ensure that there will be sufficient depth to avoid going aground. Try marking your boat pole to a depth slightly more than you need, and use this to probe the depths to ensure they are steep enough and check for any protruding rocks or similar. Reverse propellers – a quick and simply way to clear any dead leaves, weed or debris from the rudder and keep maximum efficiency, use short bursts on the throttle to free them, and when you move forward you should see any debris floating free. Old rope – no, not money for, but use older ropes for mooring rather than newer, as these will be left out in all conditions. This way you can preserve your newer, more expensive rope for cruising.

Wetsuits Whether it’s for surfing or snorkelling, a wetsuit is a hefty purchase, designed to keep you warm and safe in the water, and there are a variety of types and thicknesses depending on your intended activity, geographical location and expected temperatures. A wetsuit is not designed to keep you dry, but to trap a thin layer of water next to your skin which is heated by your body temperature and once warm, helps maintain your body heat. When choosing a suit, be sure to tell your supplier what you will be using it for. Different brands may suit certain activities, and seasons, weather conditions and so on can all affect how much protection you may need. If the majority of your Watersports will take place in UK waters, then a warmer suit obviously makes sense; but if you are jetting off to tropical climes on a regular basis you may want to look at something lighter. Neoprene is available as single lined or mesh neoprene to keep it comfortable inside (and make it easier to put on and take off!); the mesh also makes the neoprene warmer by improving run off and reducing the resulting wind chill. Double lined usually has a nylon lining both inside and out, adding layers for extra

insulation and durability. Most neoprene has a certain amount of titanium; those which are marked titanium lined will also add increased warmth, which is useful for those looking for a thinner but efficient suit. Insulated neoprene suits come in a variety of thickness, from 2/5mm to 7mm, in different lengths and as single or two pieces. The lighter short suits are more suitable for sunny beaches, tropical diving and so on, while the thicker are better for colder water temperatures. Seam construction also plays a part. On heavy duty suits, blindstitched seams are useful – this is where they are bound initially with glue and then stitched, providing a better seal and a warmer finish. Modern suits are also seamed with liquid neoprene which also helps the seal. Flatlock is a different stitch, which you would probably recognise from clothing construction, which works to create a flat, comfortable seam, but the method is only really suitable for wetsuits of up to 3mm, making it unsuitable on heavyweight suits. Zip length and position is also worth considering – a back zip is usually longer and easier to get in via, but will have more stitching and therefore seams to allow water penetration – see what’s available and how

Whether it’s for surf ing or snorkelling, a wetsuit is a hefty purchase, designed to keep you warm and safe in the water

6

you feel about donning the suit with the available zips. Depending on the thickness and construction method you choose, you will be able to narrow down brands and types of suit, at which point you must consider sizing. A good fit is important, and its an excellent idea to take advice on this if you are new to wetsuits as they can feel very strange to the uninitiated. A diving wetsuit should be snug to the point of tight, without restricting movement or breathing. Too loose will allow too much water to penetrate, meaning you lose the benefit of the warmer water trapped close to your skin. Check for a snug fit at the wrist and ankle openings – the neck too, but it will need to be looser and more comfortable here. Many modern suits come with built in anti chafing necklines to make them more comfortable to wear snugly around the neck.

Dry your suit inside out. This gives the double benefit of making the inside driest should you wish to put it on before it has fully dried (very much easier!) and also will further protect the exterior surface from light and heat. Follow the manufacturers cleaning instructions properly – heat, detergents and chemicals will all affect the neoprene, so stick to the recommended products to keep your suit in tip top condition Store the suit on a proper hanger which won’t leave creases or indents and damage the rubber.

Once the decision and investment have been made, it is worth putting in the time and effort to take care of your wetsuit properly. Follow the manufacturer’s instruction properly to avoid voiding the warranty, and remember: Heat affects neoprene and can degrade the rubber, as well as making it harder and more inflexible. Never rinse or shower with hot water. Don’t dry in direct sunlight or leave the suit in a baking hot vehicle.

Family Boating

For working boat families, the sport has never been one clearly defined as masculine, but in many leisure boating circles, this is exactly how it is seen. An expensive boys toy, something for a uccessful man to aspire to, an outward symbol of manly power and wealth.

history.

The children can definitely get involved with boating, and a good place to start would be a boating holiday. There are of course safety considerations but a good provider will be able to help you organise your family into a proper All very well and good, but, sexual politics aside, crew. Lifejackets are crucial for everyone on modern family life means boating s very rarely deck, and small children will need to be closely supervised. If you are an avid sailor, with a land lubbing wife; just how much time are you likely to spend aboard; and will the family thank you for spending precious income on a hobby which consumes an awful lot of your free time? Lifejackets are crucial for Boating is however very much an activity that the whole family can enjoy. It is an excellent way to spend lots of time relaxing outdoors, understanding teamwork and gaining a good understating of geography and waterways. There are plenty of sports which are perfectly enjoyed from a boat; fishing, cruising, racing and watersports. River boating can be an excellent way to explore both Britain’s scenic waterways and her fascinating waterside

“ everyone on deck, and small children will need to be closely supervised.

The basics: Lifejackets: Being lighter, children are more likely to be

bounced overboard by a big swell, and are much more likely to trip or find another to slip. A well fitting life jacket is an absolute must, as the wrong size can actually be more dangerous. To fit well, the jacket should be snug but not restrictive, and fit well enough to be unable to raise higher than ear level. Automatic inflation is much better than a cord which needs to be manually activated in the event of immersion. Hands: Stability on board is another important lesson. One hand to stabilise at all times will help your youngsters to learn to balance with the motion of your boat and keep them prepared at all times for any unexpected movement. WALK, don’t run. Ears: Learning to listen to all instructions properly; and acting without hesitation on those instructions is a crucial part of boating. Who ever the skipper of your boat, they need to know that all orders will be obeyed immediately to maintain the safety of the crew. Young children: The excitement and sunshine can all get a bit much, so a cuddy for a quiet nap and perhaps a tether or harness is an excellent idea to stop toddlers and young children exploring dangerous areas and allow parents to relax slightly. No Go: All types of boats should have no go areas for the children. Any engine or propeller machinery for a start, or near the companion way opening.

Man (or Woman)

Overboard!

It happens to every sailor sooner or later; but what is the best way to stay safe if you do go overboard? Of course a life jacket is the key thing here, and you should wear one at all times, but actually the risk is as much from being immersed in cold water as from drowning. Even though you maybe boating in temperate climes, the water can actually be very cold, and the reaction of your body is enough to be life threatening within a frightening short period of time. Several factors will affect how fast the effects of cold water immersion take place, including: Age: The very young or elderly will feel the effects of immersion much quicker than a fit adult Weight: body fat and bulk can help insulate your body and slow cooling

Water Depth: Deeper, cooler water will cool your body more quickly than warmer, shallow water Clothing: Waterproof, insulated clothing can help regulate body temperature and insulate against cooling much more efficiently than a swimming costume or light clothing

The stages of shock and physical reaction to cold water immersion are:

Stage one: Lasting a matter of minutes, this stage is the leading cause of death in overboard situations. It can be fatal to the elderly and infirm very rapidly; and even healthy adults are at great risk. The body will firstly respond to cold water immersion by pushing your heartrate up, to counter the closure of blood vessels in your skin - sometimes as high as 200 beats per minute, which can be very detrimental to heart health or induce a heart attack. Respiratory rate will also increase dramatically. At this point, the danger of drowning is at its highest, as the body loses conscious control of your breath. It is almost impossible to hold your breath at this stage for more than a few seconds, which makes submersion very dangerous. It takes only 3 pints of water in your lungs for you to drown, which can be swallowed very quickly during periods of rapid, uncontrolled breathing. The most critical thing you need to do at this stage is keep your head clear of the water and your breathing unimpeded.

Stage two: Movement: Movement actually speeds up temperature loss

12

After cold shock, the second phase lasts closer to half an hour, and is the stage at which you

will begin the gradual decrease of coordination and brain function. Now is the time in which to implement your survival skills while you still have the physical and mental ability to react and try to remove yourself from the water. Heat is lost some 20 times quicker in water than in the air, so getting yourself to a life raft or dry land is imperative at this point; although you need to remember that a distance which might seem perfectly fine to swim in warm water will not be nearly so easy.

Stage three: This is the point at which hypothermia will start to set in, affecting bodily functions and worsening as the body begins to balance with the surrounding water temperature, leading to unconsciousness and organ and heart failure.

greatest amount of heat is lost. You must try to remove yourself from the cold water as quickly as you can, by climbing back aboard or reaching the shore if it is within a reasonable swimming distance. To try and retain heat, remember the H.E.L.P floating position (Heat Escape Lessening Position). If there are several people, huddling together in a group should help insulate to keep body temperature up. If alone, keep your knees drawn up and your arms crossed close to your chest to stop as much heat escaping as possible. After leaving the water, remove wet clothing quickly, and wrap up warmly. Rewarming should concentrate on the torso until core temperature is restored.

What to do: HUDDLE The first and most important point is to keep your head up and out of the water. While your breathing is hard to control, the risk of drowning is at it’s highest, but the head is also the area of your body through which the

Chartering, Hiring

boats & pleasure cruises For those of us who are simply not fortunate enough to own our own boat but have a love of boating, then chartering or hiring a sea or river boat may be the solution. Boats can be chartered to include a crew, in which case you are free to sit back and enjoy the views, with little other to do than eat, drink and talk, or of course fish. Weather permitting you may choose to take a swim. On the other hand, chartering a boat without crew is an option; especially common for narrow boat and river boat days. Chartering a motor boat cruiser without a crew is not such a simple undertaking however, due mainly to the very high cost of motor cruisers and the cost of any repairs resulting from possible damage done to the boat whilst in your care. Fortunately for us in the UK, the regulations and requirements for self charter are relatively relaxed. This is not necessarily the case across other countries in Europe and usually at least an ICC (International Certificate of Competency) is required to drive boats. If you are planning to take a boat charter holiday, you should ensure that you use a trustworthy and reputable broker. Check that the company you use is an active member of the CYBA (Charter Yacht Brokers Association), which would be preferable as all CYBA members need to subscribe to strict criteria such as: 1. Adherence to CYBA’s strict code of ethics. 2. Extensive requirements to qualify for membership. 3. Inspection of yachts / boats as well as interview crews regularly. Chartering yachts and powerboats Yachts can be chartered and crewed by you and

your own crew. It is fairly common place to go on sailing holidays in flotillas, however, experience of sailing is essential if you are crewing the boat yourself. When chartering a powerboat or motor cruiser, it is usual to go out with the charter company’s own crew. Chartering fishing boats When chartering a fishing boat, the usual option is to go out with a local fisherman who will drive the boat, and quite often provide all fish bait and even rods. Fishing trips are usually on a full or half day trip basis. Chartering a river boat There are over 4,000 miles of inland river ways in the UK, and you can charter and drive your own boat for canal or river holidays. Qualifications are not necessary when chartering a river boat, and you are instead given instruction, should you need it, when you arrive to hire your boat. Hiring a boat You can hire all types of boat across the UK, usually just for a matter of hours or even just an hour. This can be a rowing boat, pedalo, canoe or a small motor boat on both the sea and on the rivers, and for the most part, you will be left to your own devices once you have hired your choice. Pleasure Cruises A pleasure cruise is the ideal way to simply experience boating on the sea, or indeed river for just a few pounds. Pleasure cruises usually last a couple of hours, more often than not on a larger vessel where you will be one of a number of paying passengers.

Happy Cruising! 41

Avoiding Breakdowns In your car, on land, engine failure is relatively simple to deal with. Stay safe and call out a breakdown service. On the other hand, 10 miles adrift from land, with tired passengers and no one nearby with a non-starting engine? Not quite so easy. For the most part, the best answer is a professional towing service, unless you are fortunate enough to have someone who can tow nearby, a fellow boater happy to help or perhaps someone from your marina. This is not always convenient or timely however, so it makes very good sense to have enough knowledge under your skipper hat to carry out minor checks and repairs to the usual engine trouble causes; if only so that you and your crew are able to limp back

58

to land. Preparation of course is key. Ensure you do your engine checks before you sail, and keep up with regular engine maintenance. Do check both fuel and oil levels, as gauges may not be 100% accurate. One of the most common reasons for requiring boat recovery is simply running out of fuel, and is easy enough to avoid. Keep a regular eye on the condition of drive belts, replacing them when they become worn, slack or too shiny / frayed. Make sure the water impeller is in good working condition. Make sure you have a good basic marine toolkit on board to help you check and repair any blocked filters or minor damage.

Preparation of course is key! Ensure you do your engine checks before you sail Whether your engine simply fails or begins to sputter or overheat, the first things on your checklist will be:

The starter. Check the kill switch and make sure you are trying to start in neutral. Check the fittings are secure and tighten any loosened screws. The battery connections may need cleaning so do check for signs of corrosion Air filter. Check this isn’t blocked, and either clean or replace, depending on its condition (carry a spare for this reason) Exhaust pipe. Check and clear any blockages Cooling water. Levels should be checked and topped up when low, and remember to check for

any leaky hoses. Most overheating issues can be traced back to a cooling problem so this will likely be your first port of call if the temperature gauge suddenly starts going up Fuel filter. A fairly common culprit, as a blockage in the filter can stop fuel reaching the engine and reduce power, leading to engine failure Oil Filter. Another filter to check for blockages and clean if it becomes gunked up. Oil levels should also be checked as low lubricant levels can cause failure too. Raw water inlet. Close the seacock, check and if necessary clean the filter or remove any objects such as plastic or debris.

TIP TOP

A

teak deck can be a daunting prospect,as most boat owners are aware of the work it takes in keeping them pristine. Taking proper care of teak decking is an important factor in any yacht care regime, and keeping them in good condition will have a huge effect on the outward appearance of your vessel as well as having a lot of practical benefits. The secret is in a good, regular maintenance programme to keep them fresh and avoid having to do any major overhauls on dingy and depressing grey decks. The sight of a glowing teak deck on a beautiful white yacht cannot be understated, but do much more than that. The rough nature of the wood itself is an important practical safety feature, as it provides a natural non slip surface whatever the weather conditions. Teak is also an excellent insulation material, keeping the interior regulated and the deck itself relatively cool in hotter weather.

66

TEAK

The nature of teak is a mix of hard wood growth rings and soft wood elements. It is strong and resilient, but care must be taken to avoid stripping out the soft wood middle sections, which will leave ridges of hard wood behind which will need sanding and restoring. Careful care will ensure your teak decking wears as it should without the need for any major works. In its newly finished state, teak has a rich, golden brown glow, but it will naturally weather to a soft, silvery grey which is not unattractive, but most people prefer to keep it’s gorgeous patina to a sparkling chestnut. Although tempting, it is crucial to avoid pressure washing teak decking, as this will simply force out the softer wood, leaving just the ridges behind. The same applies to harsh cleaning solutions or stiff cleaning brushes. Don’t use high-pressure cleaners, they will blast out the soft wood elements of the teak leaving ridges and will force you into prematurely sanding your teak decks. Don’t use hard brushes or household cleaning detergents as again these can damage the soft surface. You need to investigate a proper

“Although tempting, it is crucial

to avoid pressure washing teak decking, as this will simply force out the softer wood

teak cleanser to suit your boat. There are proprietary brands on the market which are generally a 2 part process which involve bleaching back the surface and then using a treatment. The first part of the treatment will need diluting and applying with a soft sponge. This will loosen much of the dirt and any algae or stuck on grime. When it is time to clean the solution and dirt away, use a hose on gently, don’t blast as this can also strip out the soft elements of the wood. The second part is a mild acid which will restore the teak to its original colour before a final rinse. The process needs to be done carefully to avoid any plastic or metal fixings, and again, avoiding high pressure water. The finish will be as new, but the teak will turn silvery grey again in a few short months. Traditionally, the finish would be done with traditional teak oil, but this is not a long lasting solution. If you prefer, you can use a finishing product like Semco which is applied with a brush and rags and should last at least 6 months, if not more. The dressing needs careful application as it will stain. This seals the teak against dirt and spills, stops any grime getting into the grain of the wood, and should stop the need for using a brush to clean which does protect the teak. Some yacht owners prefer not to, as the finish does look different, Between treatments, wash the deck weekly, preferably with fresh water. Salt water and scrubbing are likely to reduce the life of the treatment, so treat it gently and it should last many years.

Fishing & Angling an Introduction

Among those with a passion for it, fishing as a sport is an absolute joy, and for some, goes as far as obsession! Recreational fishing is a hobby, for pleasure or competition as opposed to commercial fishing; for profit, or subsistence fishing, which is fishing for survival. The history of recreational fishing and how long it has been a hobby is unclear, but there is evidence of fly-fishing in Japan as early as 9th century BC and in Macedonia in 200 AD. Recreational fishing became popular in Britain in the 16th and 17th centuries, leading to the publication of The Compleat Angler by Izaak Walton in 1653. This book is a fascinating classic guide to the joys of fishing, and combines practical information with folklore. Occasional songs, ballads, quotations from other writers, as well as angling tips and advice enliven the story of three friends travelling through the English countryside. It has been reprinted hundreds of times since its first publication. The most common form of recreational fishing is done with a rod, reel, line, hooks and bait. This is known as angling and after being caught the fish is often released back into the water, a technique known as catch and release. The general term for all fishing equipment is fishing tackle. Anglers will often use extra pieces of tackle, known as terminal tackle, as these go at the hook end, to enhance their fishing equipment. These can be weights, floats and swivels. Lures can also be used instead of bait,

79

and keen anglers usually make their own lures and artificial flies. This has become somewhat of an art form, with the most beautiful and functional flies being emulated nationwide. Recreational fishing has conventions, rules, licensing restrictions and laws that govern the way in which fish may be caught. In Britain, the different counties have different fishing by-laws although they typically cover angling concerns such as the use of nets, the prohibition of hooks except in the mouth, banning of fishing in certain areas, closed seasons, quotas and the issuing of licenses to allow fishing. Most of these by-laws are in place to ensure that stocks of native fish are properly sustained. Some keen anglers keep fish logs detailing fish caught and in particular the details of trophy-sized fish so that they may be submitted to judging and awarding bodies for verification. Nowadays, many anglers also take part in competitive tournaments where the winner is the angler deemed to have caught the heaviest of a specific type of fish within a set time. Many of the competitors are professional fishermen sponsored by commercial endorsements. Other competitions are ‘the longest fish wins’ type contests. These are used particularly when the rule is to catch and release the fish. The catch is photographed next to an acceptable rule of length and then set free. In Europe, anglers tend to fish for species such as carp, pike, tench, rudd, roach perch and barbel. Although some are pursued for their food value, most are fished for their fighting abilities and the ease with which they sometimes outwit the angler, as the fishermen relish the challenge of a tricky adversary. Particularly in Europe and America, angling is rarely practiced as a food related sport. Anglers cite relaxation, being outdoors and family recreation as their prime motivations for fishing, as well as of course the peace and quiet and the enjoyment of spending the day by a beautiful waterway. Keen anglers also extol the fun of catching the fish, whether it is one, plenty or an especially large one, and the general challenge and adventure of the sport are what keeps them, and an estimated three million Britons, fishing.

Among those with a passion for it, fishing as a sport is an absolute joy, and for some, goes as far as obsession! 81

Carping On CARP: ONE OF BRITAIN’S FAVOURITE FISH TO CATCH The carp (cyprinus carpio) is a warm water fish, and so actually not indigenous to Britain, believe it or not. Common, grass, linear and mirror carp are all varieties introduced into British waterways in the Medieval period, mainly by monks who farmed the fish as food. As early as the 15th century anglers were already aware of their strength and wily ability to hide and learn. They are clearly adaptable; and while technically not native have managed the thrive in the cooler British climate in almost every body of water in the country, from village ponds to rivers and lakes. Their agility, cunning and sheer size make them a challenge, an exciting catch. 20lbs or more is considered average, with a British record taking note of fish over 60lb, although these older, large fish are long lived and tend to learn as they age, making this an attractive and exciting sport for

82

competition and personal bests. Fishing in the UK is strictly regulated by the Environment Agency and you will need to ensure you have an up to date rod licence to cover you for freshwater fish including carp, eel and smelt as well as trout and salmon fishing. It is simple to get the licence, which can be obtained from your local Post Office – you can start with a 1 or 8 day licence and then move to an annual licence for as little as £30. Of course, even for the beginner the aim is going to be landing a big fish, but these catches can be trickier to manage and to really get the satisfaction of landing a good haul, you might be wiser to head to somewhere well stocked with smaller fish to practice with. Once you have cut your teeth, you can start honing your expertise to begin chasing the larger catches.

THEIR AGILITY, CUNNING & SHEER SIZE MAKE THEM A CHALLENGE & AN EXCITING CATCH! Equipment Fishing equipment doesn’t come cheap, which means to get the best value for money you need to research your kit before you buy to give yourself the best chance of making the catches with your rod and reel. There is a huge amount of tackle on the market, and most fishing gear suppliers should carry ranges to suit most budgets. Obviously budget equipment is a good idea for the beginner but it pays to ensure you look at quality as well as cost – the last thing you want is for your rod to fail at a crucial moment. Don’t forget good quality outdoor clothing – the British weather being what it is means a lack of good waterproofs and warm clothes can turn a great days fishing into a freezing, miserable experience. Bait Your tackle and bait shop can advise, but boilies and pellets are readily available in a massive range of weird and wonderful flavours to choose from and experiment with. These are usually boiled from a variety of protein, vegetable and semolina or soya options and bound together / boiled so that they will not disintegrate in the water. Usually they are brightly coloured to attract the fish, and can come frozen or with preservatives to stop them from going off. For the truly keen, you may graduate to making your own baits and boilie’s, but commercially available ones can be very good indeed.

A Boat From Home TIPS & ADVICE FOR FIRST TIME BOAT BUYERS Messing about on the river has a certain ring to it, and like many Brits who have experienced the joys of hiring a boat and cruising the canals, the idea of buying your very first boat might be starting to appeal. In many respects, boat buying is not dissimilar to buying any other vehicle, but with brand new models reaching prices of over ÂŁ100,000, we are talking about a considerable investment and one where it really does pay to

92

make sure you do extensive research. First off, if you haven’t already, do hire a boat to find out whether you and your family enjoy the realities of the life, from the living space to handling locks, mooring and understanding the regulations. For first time buyers, even with a large budget, it can be an idea

to experiment with an older boat to get an understanding of what features you prefer before shelling out on custom fittings and spec on a new purchase. Budget, of course, is key. You can lay out on a brand new, top of the range narrowboat built to spec, or choose something appealing and nearly new, or, if you aren’t averse to working hard and taking a punt, look at something which needs some work but is at the much lower end of the market. Whichever you choose, don’t forget that whatever the initial costs, ongoing budget also needs to be carefully considered. Essential maintenance is one factor, but running costs also figure. Fuel is expensive, and propane for cooking and a regular pump out toilet tank change will also figure. Your boat will need a licence for your intended waterways along with a permanent mooring, both of which will depend on the length of craft you buy and will need to be renewed regularly. Insurance is also crucial, because while boating is relative safe, in comparison to say motoring, accidents can and do happen, and can be expensive to correct. Insurance is also a requirement of the Canal and River Trust, who will likely be issuing your licence. Once you have set a budget, find some

reputable dealers and begin to understand the market. Magazines and online will help you to understand pricing, particularly in the second hand market, and a good broker should be able to advise on good purchases for your budget and perhaps begin to look at acquiring something suitable on your behalf. As with any vehicle, do not rely on online images and descriptions – you need to see the boat in action to fully understand its condition and any quirks it may have. Brokers will be showing all boats to their best advantage, but as a buyer, especially a newbie, buying unseen could prove an extremely expensive mistake.

Surveys Getting a survey done by a professional, experienced examiner is a must. Your surveyor will advise and want to survey the boat out of the water in order to check hull thickness. A good survey will come in at under £1000, and will provide a written report, much like a house survey, which will give you a good understanding of the boats condition, any major or minor works that need attending and a fair understanding of whether the listed price is a fair one.

Many Brits experience the joys of cruising the canals!

93

Narrowboat DESIGNS In modern canal boats we have the opportunity to reflect the best of the narrowboat tradition, drawing on the design and decoration of the original working boat, but bringing the whole completely up to date. Designs have now settled down into three main styles - traditional, cruiser and semi-traditional - with two or three variations for the enthusiast. Let’s start by looking at the three main narrowboat styles in more detail...

94

1) Traditional: With short aft deck (or simply Trad style) where the back deck is short, with room only for the steerer.

2) Cruiser:

1

Style with a longer back deck, popular with hire boats and families, as there is more room for several people to gather together on the stern.

3) Semi Traditional: Where the shape, viewed side on, looks like a Trad, but in reality the deck is open like a cruiser allowing more room at the stern.

2

4) Barge: It is a craft whose beam is wider than 6’10”, and so cannot navigate the locks on the narrow canals. Barges are restricted to the broad canals such as the Leeds & Liverpool, parts of the Grand Union, Kennet & Avon, etc. The term ‘Barge’ nowadays tends to be reserved for older or historic ex-working craft. Modern canal boats built with a wide beam may also have Trad, Cruiser or Semi Trad sterns, and tend to be referred to simply as ‘Wide Beam Trad’ or ‘Wide Beam Cruiser’ etc. Such craft can be anything from 8’ to 12’6” beam (possibly more).

3

5) Dutch Barge: It is a term often heard today, referring to a particular style of craft which is a different concept to the narrowboat. Whereas narrowboats are flat bottomed, Dutch Barges usually have rounded or vee bottom hull forms, are built to any of the above wide beam dimensions, and also normally will have a wheelhouse, which can either be aft, or midships. Dutch Barges, because of their hull shape, are usually seaworthy, which canal boats are not.

4

6) Dutch Barge Style Narrowboat: This is a narrowboat whose hull below waterline will be similar to other narrowboats, but the hull and superstructure above waterline is styled to look like the shape of the Dutch Barge, including the provision of a wheelhouse, the distinctive rounded counter, and the characteristic bow shape.

RegulationsÂ

Inland

Whether your boat is in private use or commercial use, it is important to be aware which Authority presides over the waterway you are on, to ensure that you are complying with the correct regulations.

of the canals lay derelict, this transport system of the 18th and 19th centuries has been revived for leisure and relaxation. There are however regulations for private pleasure craft as well as for boats that are in use commercially.

With over 3,000 miles of canals and navigable rivers available for you to enjoy, boating on the UK inland waterways has many delights to offer. Since the end of the second world war, when many

Boats that are not “going to sea i.e. remaining within Categorised Waters (as defined in MSN 1827), may come under the jurisdiction of a Harbour Authority, a Local Authority or a

96

ensure that you are complying with the correct regulations in the waterway you are on

Navigation Authority. A Navigation or Harbour Authority’s jurisdiction will have clearly defined boundaries, which will often be marked on charts and within these boundaries they will normally be the authorities responsible for making bye laws and issuing local notices to mariners in relation to navigation, although the Local Authority may also have a limited power to regulate navigation within its jurisdiction.

Whether your boat is in private use or commercial use, it is important to be aware which Authority presides to ensure that you are complying with the correct regulations. In general private pleasure craft will not find any nasty surprises with regards manning regulations, boat build or equipment other than within the jurisdiction of a Navigation Authority that has adopted the Boat Safety Scheme. It is much more likely that

97

commercially operated boats that do not go to sea will need to comply with boat build and equipment requirements and there are now mandatory manning regulations for most commercial craft. Various historic Public Health Acts give Local Authorities the power to licence pleasure craft let for hire within their jurisdiction and to regulate the use of other pleasure craft. Although their authority only extends to 1000m offshore, it does give them control over vessels operating from their “patch”. The operator of a small commercial vessel carrying up to 12 passengers which does not go to sea could choose to comply with the relevant MCA code for sea going vessels, which as a national scheme, will normally exempt them from the local regulations or could comply with the Local Authority’s regulations. The Inland Waters Small Passenger Boat Code was produced jointly by the MCA and the Association of Inland Navigation Authorities (AINA) to provide a national framework, which local authorities could apply in full or in part as is applicable to their waters. The Inland Waters Small Passenger Boat Code covers equipment, build and manning and which elements of it are applied (if any) is up to the Local Authority; they can of course set totally different regulations if they feel that way inclined. This remains the case for build and equipment, but since the revision of the Boatmaster’s Licence (BML) manning falls under MSN 1808, which makes the Boatmaster

98

Licence an acceptable alternative to any licence required under Local Authority byelaws or other local legislation. Under the jurisdiction of a Navigation Authority the situation differs, as a Navigation Authority may have power to licence all navigation i.e. private pleasure craft as well as commercial vessels. Several Navigation Authorities require that vessels under their jurisdiction are registered and have a navigation licence. The main navigations authorities include British Waterways, the Environment Agency and the Broads Authority but 26 authorities are members of the Association of Inland Navigation Authorities (AINA). British Waterways and the Environment Agency jointly own the Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) which specifies the requirements boats must usually meet before they can be issued with the BW or EA navigation licence required for many of the UK’s rivers and canals. The Boat Safety Scheme is intended to ensure that boat systems such as electrical systems, engines and fuel systems, electrical propulsion systems, LPG systems and fire extinguishers, are properly installed and maintained. As well as applying to the BW and EA waterways, the Boat Safety Scheme has been adopted by most of the navigation authorities represented by the Association of Inland Navigation Authorities; this includes the Broads Authority. Additionally the BSS has been adopted by some harbour authorities and private marinas, so it is important to check if the BSS applies where you are boating.

The BSS applies to some extent to most boats including small commercial vessels and private pleasure craft, but not all. If the vessel carries fuel, has domestic cooking, heating, refrigerating or lighting appliances, a BSS examination will be required unless the craft is covered by an exemption, such as having been CE marked under the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) within the last 4 years. Although boating inland on a temporary basis does not negate the need to comply with the BSS, visiting boats may find that the applicable navigation authority will issue a short term licence without the need for a BSS examination;

a declaration by the owner that the vessel is compliant is likely to be required and the owner must be willing to allow spot checks if requested. For further information consult the BSS Essential Guide available from the BSS web-site. In addition to the Boat Safety Scheme, boats in commercial use for sport or pleasure, which carry no more than 12 passengers, do not carry cargo and do not go to sea (leave categorised waters as defined in MSN 1827) should be aware of that the Inland Waters Small Passenger Boat Code may still apply. For example for such boats, that wish to obtain a BW navigation licence, a declaration of compliance with the code is required.
