Thinking of joining a book club? There is to some, a stereotypical image of book clubs as talking arenas for bookworms, or gaggles of girls discussing the latest â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;chick litâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Which, of course, to an extent they are, but there are many more reasons for joining a local reading group.

many groups decide on titles as a joint decision, the chances are some of the choices will not be your usual favourites. Reading of course will help you to broaden your horizons and vocabulary; the discussion and insights from other readers give this aspect a whole new dimension.

A reading group can, for many, offer an excellent route into an established local social network. Offering the opportunity to meet people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, book clubs often also give you the chance to meet people with fairly similar interests, making it an excellent way to get out and meet new people.

Reading groups are also an excellent way to help improve your communication skills. Discussion will hopefully naturally improve your listening skills, as you navigate your way through others interpretations of the reading material. Speaking in a group is much less formal and structured than the classroom, but will help you build confidence in talking to new people, and to speak to a wider audience.

Many groups have a focus towards a certain genre or variety of fiction or non fiction, although some are broader than others. Being given a reading list can help you to extend your usual reading, as you will need to keep up with the set texts if you are going to participate in the group, and while

giving you a window into others opinionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, what for them makes a good or bad plot or characterization, and perhaps help you to mature the seed of your idea. Are you thinking of joining a running club? Perhaps the lingering thoughts behind your New Years Resolution, or shedding some pounds pre holiday? Running clubs have become more common in recent years, and can be found throughout the county should you be inclined. Running clubs are not just for the fitness fanatics in lycra among us, but also offer a diverse and friendly membership. Joining a club is an excellent motivational tool, allowing you to adopt a slightly different mindset and take the hobby slightly more seriously. It also means company and security. Many runners enjoy pounding the streets alone, but company can spice up a run, providing the motivation of someone to pace yourself with. If you are in training for a specific event, say a marathon or Race for Life, then you may be able to team up with another runner who is also competing. If you are simply looking for a fitness activity, the motivation of not letting down a running partner should keep you going; but if you are competing, a group can add a little competition to help you push yourself! They also offer a good opportunity for socializing. Some groups do organize social events, group runs

and other such friendly activities. Finding a partner to run with is also ideal for those nervous of running alone. Both male and female runners can feel unsafe, especially when the evenings draw in again, and using a group can offer safety in numbers, and access to well thought out, properly lit routes. Another important aspect is access to health information. Running can be a very simple activity, but if you are serious, then coaching advice is crucial to ensure you work up to your goals and avoid injury. A club should also be able to give advice on finding a local physiotherapist, sports massage specialist or any other health professional you may need.

Once you have made a commitment to running and the adrenalin gets going, you will find you slowly build up in both stamina and speed, and your personal best will start to become ever more important. Here are our top tips to help you improve your performance and achieve the times you want:

Interval running: For 2 minutes run (or walk) at a slow pace, and then run as fast as you can for 1 minute. Repeat this for 30 to 40 minutes a session. These intervals can be changed to a longer or shorter time as your stamina dictates, and try to do this routine at least once a week. Hill running: Find a good steep hill. Run 100 to 200 metres up the hill, at the fastest pace you can and then jog or walk slowly down. Repeat this 8 to 10 times. Like interval training, hill running should be incorporated in to your weekly routine, but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t over do this as the impact can cause injuries when undertaken too often. Hydration: Ensure you are well hydrated before you begin each and every run. Frequency: Regular, frequent runs will improve your running speed over time. Stick to the 10% rule, which means increasing only 10% each week. Running is a high impact sport and it is important not to put too much impact all at once on your bones, joints and muscles.

Running shoes: Running doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t require fancy equipment, but a good pair of running shoes will not only improve your running but can help to protect you from injury. Get your gait checked at a proper running shop to ensure the correct fit - Runners World usually have a tread mill in their shops and you can get your gait checked there. Apps: Using your phone with fitness apps such as Runkeeper will help you to track your progress and start to properly compete against yourself. Energy: When we run we tend to sweat excessively. This can then deplete our salt levels much faster than normal which will hinder performance and is rather unhealthy. You can get energy drinks that provide these extra electrolytes easily, but if you are on a budget then add a pinch of salt to orange squash. Warm up & cool down: A proper warm up is essential to avoiding injury. Start with a slow jog or walk for the first 5 to 20 minutes, and check out online for a number of other warm up exercises which can be performed prior to your run. It is equally important for injury protection to stretch properly after your run. Distance: As well as short burst training and hill running, incorporate one long run into your week to help build and maintain stamina and keep fitness levels at your peak.

Sleeping Fit

Ask any fitness instructor, gym bunny, fighter or runner how they keep in shape and their answer will likely revolve around diet and training regimes. Which, in a sense, it should. After all, eat less and exercise more is the standard weight loss / fitness advice from medical professionals and enthusiast alike. Yes, lower calories and increased activity do lead to weight loss, but that just isn’t the whole of the story, especially for those looking to increase muscle mass rather than simply losing weight.

Studies suggest that bad sleep / not enough can also affect the way your fat cells behave. After a few days of insufficient sleep, your body changes the way it uses insulin, which your body uses to help fat cells function properly and prevent fat storage. When this is out of whack, the fat cells act less efficiently, leaving lipids in your blood stream which then end up as fatty deposits in areas they shouldn’t be in. Worse still, sleep deficit can trigger cravings for more and more food for energy, and not necessarily the right type of foods either.

What’s missing? Sleep. Sleep is the missing ingredient. With our busy modern lifestyles, fitting in work, childcare, a social life and a good training programme, many of us simply do not get enough sleep, and it truly is a key aspect toward achieving your training, weight and fitness goals. It stands to reason that as an athlete, you need more calories and nutrition to cope with pushing your body further – so logic suggests that your body probably needs more sleep, too. Research suggests 7 hours is a good baseline, but unsurprisingly, many of us are simply not achieving that on a regular basis. Initially, this lack of sleep has a negative impact on training time. A poor nights sleep can leave you not feeling motivated, too tired to do us justice, and unable to perform to the level you need to stretch yourself and keep building muscle. What’s more, sleep helps to increase protein synthesis, which aids in muscle building and repair. This means not only is it harder to reach your fitness goals, but a sleep debt can actually increase the risk of muscle injury; thereby further decreasing training time and creating a vicious cycle. Growth hormones are released during slow wave sleep, and yes, you’ve guessed it, bad sleep means much less low wave sleep as well as increasing cortisol, which also acts to slow growth hormone production.

Leptin and Ghrelin, the two hormones primarily responsible for appetite, are directly affected by insufficient sleep. More ghrelin is produced, and less leptin, which results in increased hunger. Ever been exhausted and felt a big slice of sugary cake would do the trick? It won’t, but the quick burst of sugar energy makes it feel like it does. Even when you know that, lack of sleep is known to impair judgement, meaning all of your good intentions can go right out of the window at a time when actually your body needs you to make the healthiest choices. Not good for weight loss, and not good for those trying to improve sporting performance with a good, high protein diet. Aiming for 7 – 9 hours a night should improve reflexes, accuracy, strength and stamina. How to make sure this happens? Create a routine. Lie ins might seem like a way to reduce sleep debt, but a regular schedule will make it easier to sleep at night as your body settles into a regular rhythm. 27

Some prefer to stick to the traditional sprung mattress – but modern mattresses also come in a variety of types of foam or a hybrid of the two which are well worth looking at especially if you have sleep issues or any medical / physio issues.

Keep your sleeping quarters away from any training areas to create a restful mindset that isn’t racing with ideas of improved work outs! Mattresses Some retailers suggest changing your mattress at least every 8 years. Not too bad when you have purchased an inexpensive option, but is it that crucial? In a word, yes. Every 7 – 10 years is best. Think about how often you sit on your sofa, and then how much time is spent in bed, and you will see why keeping a decent mattress is so important for your health. It is almost impossible to get a full nights deep sleep on a saggy, unsupportive mattress, and the Sleep Council (www.sleepcouncil.org.uk) recommend changing your mattress regularly and testing properly to ensure you get the right type for your weight and build. This is even more important if you are sharing a bed, as buying a mattress which suits you both can be trickier! Mattress technology has improved

The foam itself didn’t have that all too familiar damp plasticky smell of previously tried memory foam mattresses, and it settled to the shape of our king-size bed quickly. The medical grade foam here is distinct from say, Tempur memory foam – it is a different material which does not require body heat to soften to shape, meaning it should avoid overheating. The medical grade is also designed to be ultra supportive, to improve athletes wellbeing which translates pretty well to the average user too.

The summer of 2018 was probably the best time to test this new mattress, with a combination of the incredibly high temperatures seen this summer, and a rather pregnant editor with a terrible sleeping pattern! This type of medical grade foam is wonderful in both high and low temperatures – previous experience with a notable brand of memory foam has provided nothing but a sweay nights sleep, but the Mammoth does not suffer from this issue – warm in winter and cool in summer, as a couple with quite different temperature requirements we have both felt perfectly comfortable through the year. Back support is top notch, not saggy or soft, but supportive and firm, yet soft and pillow like. The difference in our weights was quite noticeable on the previous mattress, but this one supports both occupants equally with no roll or sag to the middle. It also copes with small child invasions admirably, meaning a sneaky visitor arrives unnoticed as the bed

Checklist Whether it is your first attempt at a triathlon or your 100th, the equipment needed to successfully participate in a triathlon can be fairly extensive, so it is always worthwhile keeping a checklist to ensure you remember all the numerous items you will need to pack. As a seasoned triathlete, I can still recall all too well the disastrous incident of the forgotten swimming goggles!

Your checklist may well have a few additions, but here is a starting point:

On arrival: Make sure you leave plenty of travel time to reach your event, as there is a fair bit of preparation to do on arrival at a triathlon. It may be that the car parking area is quite a distance from the registration and transition area, and you will need to transport your equipment and walk your bike. If you have a triathlon box, a plastic storage box to keep everything together, this will need carrying through to the transition area. Once you reach the registration area, you will receive your personal race number and your race chip. The number will need to be fixed securely and clearly to your bike, helmet, and wet suit. Some organisers may have further number requirements

so do check with them when registering. The race chip is fastened securely to your left leg with the provided strap (usually Velcro) and will record all your transition times between events, allowing you to break down the individual events and transition times. Your bike is then racked at the transition area, along with all the items you will require for T1 and T2 (transitions), so do ensure you remember exactly where they have been placed, and that they are in the order in which you will need them. Transition time is recorded but does still count towards your final overall race time, so you want to minimize the time spent gathering goggles or equipment, as Transition times really can have an effect on your results.

Themes Intentionally or not, most weddings end up with a theme of sorts. Some may choose to go for a very obvious running theme, such a rockabilly style or vintage, while others develop a theme of their own around certain colours and touches. You may not want to go all out Lord of the Rings or Star Trek mad, understandably (we are not judging if you do!) but actually, deciding on a theme or concept for your big day can be very useful, as it will help

starting point for ideas which you can adapt to suit yourselves, and is also an excellent way to collate ideas and begin to create a concept which is as individual as you are. There are things to consider when working on your theme. After all, an elvish style wedding isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t going to work in a modern hotel, by the same token it might not be sensible to plan a 1950s extravaganza in a country house venue or eastern style marquee. Aside from the venue, in order for a wedding concept to truly work, it needs to suit who you both are as a couple. A good idea would be to sit down and play some word association, writing down any central tenets of your relationship, your future plans, any cute in-jokes and more, which may well lead you naturally towards a cohesive idea. Perhaps looking at memorable trips or

memories of outings or events will offer ideas, or a style of music or an era you are both drawn towards. Keep it realistic.
