Not So

Prickly Pals Although there are in fact very few proper breeders in the UK, African pygmy hedgehogs are becoming an increasingly popular if rather exotic unusual pet. The crossbreeding of Algerian and White Bellied hedgehogs has produced an affectionate, loving, pint size pet with soft bristles and adorable faces. The African Pygmy Hedgehogs Club UK now boasts over 9,000 members and numbers are constantly increasing. The hedgehogs start at around £125, and grow to approximately 2 pounds. They are in fact carnivorous, so must be fed a meaty diet. They also need insect matter, although supplements are available – a reputable breeder will of course ensure you are well aware of their dietary and habitat needs. The right breeder will also ensure that they have been properly socialised, so that you will be able to interact properly with your hedgehog. They don’t carry fleas or diseases, and are nocturnal, making them an ideal pet for full time workers who are away in the day and look forward to handling their pet in the evenings. These hedgehogs are obviously not indigenous and so take commitment and understanding to keep successfully. The pygmies like a warm environment, and don’t automatically hibernate like their wild cousins. Heating pads can be used, although make sure they do not cover the entire base of the enclosure so the hedgehogs are able to move to a cooler spot if they need to. They require plenty of space to roam and exercise, a minimum of a good couple of square feet, and be sure to avoid wire flooring which is very unkind to delicate feet. Like other small pets, consider a wheel to keep them in trim, and other toys including cardboard tubes balls and safe burrowing materials will keep him exercised and his mind active. They are solitary creatures and need to be kept apart, and bedding needs to be carefully considered, as hedgehogs are allergic to a variety of wood oils (barring aspen), so talk to your breeder to see what they recommend. Some use shredded paper or purpose made bedding. Your hog will also need a private sleeping area so they can hideout and feel secure – a wooden box, little log cabin or plastic nesting box should suffice.

Keeping Rabbits Rabbits are often seen as ideal pets for children; in fact this isn’t always the case, as they can be rather timid, require space and care, and aren’t always comfortable with being handled by children. They are excellent pets who are easily litter trained, fascinating to watch and can become very affectionate, but they do take time and effort. Is a rabbit right for you? For small children, an adult will need to take responsibility of pet rabbit(s) as children can be too boisterous for a rabbit to feel truly comfortable, especially as they are not fond of loud and sudden noises! Although rabbits can be very affectionate, most prefer to be at ground level and don’t like being held high, so if you want a cuddly pet, a rabbit may not be for you. They are quite delicate creatures and can easily be injured if they are held

8

awkwardly, or worse, struggle and fall. Healthcare can be very expensive. Rabbits can suffer from a number of conditions which can be life threatening and very expensive to treat; they also need regular vaccines against myxomatosis and VHD. Do you have plenty of space? Confining a rabbit to a hutch all the time is not recommended – they need space to run and play, whether it be indoors or out. Rabbits do actually make brilliant indoor pets, but you will need to thoroughly bunny proof your home first, as they will happily shear through cables and other items as they potter around your home. Do you have hay fever? Rabbits need plenty of hay in their diet to stay healthy, which can be a problem for hay fever and asthma sufferers.

Are you prepared? Rabbits can live for up to 10 years with the right care, so if they are a children’s pet, the child may well have grown up and moved away while the rabbit is still a pet. If you decide a rabbit or two is the pet for you, consider the following: Rabbits prefer to live in bonded pairs, and will need neutering if you get a male / female pair, which is better for their health in any case. Look at reputable breeders (a list can be found on the RWAF website) to ensure you get a happy, healthy pet. Living space is crucial. Check out the RWAF guidelines, but you will need to ensure your rabbit has a safe place (a hutch or covered pen), plus plenty of exercise space to run around in daily. General care • Rabbits need access to constant fresh water, plus hay, feed, greens and more. The majority of

their diet should be grass or hay, with only a small amount of commercial feed. • Ensure they are safe in your garden from roaming foxes or cats – don’t let them roam unattended. • Provide willow sticks, newspaper, toilet roll inners and so on, as rabbits need to chew and will find something if you don’t provide suitable toys! • Get on her level. Rabbits are prey animals, with large ears and a sensitive disposition. To truly make friends, get down to ground level, and spend time quietly sitting. Most rabbits will find this much less threatening, and learn to make friends more quickly. Try to avoid lifting the rabbit of the ground unless absolutely necessary, as they may panic and can scratch or bite in fear. • If you do have a single bunny, make sure to give it plenty of attention. They are very sociable creatures and need regular interaction.

Is Pet Insurance Worth it? Unless you have been living under a rock in recent years, you will no doubt have heard plenty about the benefits of health insurance for your pets; but have you followed up the advice and got your pet covered? If not, you should. The benefits are enormous, and in case you need further persuading, we’ll remind you! Some owners have no budget constraints to worry about, or prefer to save a set sum each month to cover any unexpected costs, but vet bills can be huge and for many of us these kind of funds are not just lying around. Statistics suggest the UK spends over £2 million each year on pet Christmas presents, but only some 15% of pet owners have insurance! In the UK it is a criminal offense to (knowingly) deny an injured or sick animal veterinary treatment and cause unnecessary suffering.

10

“ The benefits are enormous, and in case you need further persuading, we’ll remind you! “

Charities as a rule do not provide financial assistance with veterinary fees, although some will help low income owners. Vets bills can be very high, depending on the treatment necessary. Some routine procedures are not covered by insurance, such as boosters or neutering, but will need to be done to keep your pet healthy. In the case of unexpected costs, surgery or cancer treatment can run into bills of thousands, especially if overnight stays are involved. We did some online quotes to get an idea of price, and found that while there is some disparity in process, a healthy dog could be insured for between £15 and £45 a month, with a cat at between £6 and £20 per month. Cover and price varies, with some policies inserting clauses so that they cover accidents only, a certain amount of episodes or illnesses a year and so on and of course, you tend to get what you pay for. It is worth double checking the excess too, these can be really quite high and you should be prepared for the initial cost whatever the treatment. Some companies allow a fixed for life price scenario, meaning your premiums will start relatively high but not increase out of hand due to age or developing conditions, while lower priced policies tend to increase year on year. Most will have a payout limit on annual treatment, and this can also have a knock on

effect on the following years costs. Accident only policies are available, which can bring premiums down somewhat. Rabbit insurance starts from around £6 a month. Premiums also tend to be higher with older animals, those with specific, breed related problems or existing conditions which are likely to be excluded and in the current climate may make this seem like an unnecessary expense. That said, while we all hope pet insurance will never be claimed, if you have ever had the unthinkable experience of being unable to afford critical care for your pet, you will know how excruciating it is. Many policies will cover alternative therapies, such as canine hydrotherapy; and others cover the cost of advertising and perhaps a reward if your pet is lost and many policies also come with legal cover. Examples of this may be if a dog bites someone, or a car is damaged by hitting or avoiding your pet – did you know you are responsible for the damage? Legal cover means if your pet is responsible for harm or damage, your costs will be covered. Exotic pets come with their own set of insurances and exclusions, so contact a specialist insurer for further infomation. Exotics can have rare of complicated health issues and specialist vets bills for these pets can be astronomical, so cover against sudden emergency costs may help you to avoid upsetting and costly decisions further down the line.

FIV: The Facts

12

What is FIV? you may be asking yourself... Let us explain & advise you on the signs to detect it in your cat!

FIV – Feline Immunodeficiency Virus – is the feline version of AIDS which attacks the white blood cells of the cat’s immune system, killing the cells and reducing their effectiveness in fighting disease and infection. The disease is not able to cross to people, and like AIDS, is a permanent, incurable disease. Infected cats may show no symptoms for many years, but can infect other cats. As many as 5% of UK cats are thought to be infected, with unneutered males being the most at risk. There is no known vaccine against FIV at present. The virus is not necessarily considered a death sentence. Cats may go many years without displaying any major symptoms, although it does depend on the health and constitution of the cat. It is crucial to test all cats in a household if one is infected, and the cat must be kept indoors, both to prevent the spread of infection and to avoid the cat coming into contact with dangerous bacteria and other illnesses. It is possible to keep FIV and non FIV infected cats in the same household, as long as they don’t tend to fight, as the risk of it spreading through the household is fairly minimal. The virus is transferred via saliva, usually through a bite; or from biting a cat who is infected. It is thought that this is why intact males are more likely to contract the disease due to their more aggressive tendencies. It can also be inherited from an affected mother; or rarely via sharing food or grooming. The virus does not survive outside of its hosts body for very long at all, so it is unlikely to be caught unless cats are fighting, which is another reason why it is so important to neuter your pet and reduce fighting tendencies. Although symptoms can be hidden for years, there are a few telltale signs at the point of infection, such as a mild fever and / or enlarged lymph nodes. Later on, the disease can cause lethargy, weight loss and poor appetite, as well

13

as regular and long lasting illnesses such as fever, diarrhoea and skin infections. Cats with the virus often show signs of gingivitis or snuffling and sneezing. In many shelters, FIV infected cats can often be left behind, as people often have very little idea of what adopting such a cat might entail. Should you be looking for an indoor cat, an infected cat can actually be an excellent choice of pet. There is no real treatment which can cure the virus, so instead, steps need to be taken to protect the cat and prevent any spread of the disease. Proper vaccinations and flea control are vital in helping to keep the cat healthy, although you must consult with your vet properly as some vaccines are actually thought to speed up the development of symptoms. Foodstuffs also need to be monitored, avoiding raw foods or eggs which can contain dangerous bacteria which your pets’

14

immune system will be unable to fend off. Monitor the cat’s health regularly, with bi annual check-ups with your vet and weight maintenance. Any sign of illness should be treated as rapidly as possible to start any drug therapies quickly and increase their efficiency before the cat becomes too unwell to successfully fight off the issue. Do be aware that although many cats with FIV live long, happy lives, the need for rapid treatment can prove expensive, and some cats simply don’t fight off disease as well, which means there is some risk of losing a beloved pet earlier rather than later. Indoor Cats Some owners feel it unkind to keep a cat indoors; in fact it would be irresponsible to both the cat in questions’ health and that of the wider population to allow an FIV infected cat to roam free.

Moving an outdoor cat to an indoor life will take effort. Most cats used to unrestricted outside access will attempt to escape, so make sure all routes of exit, however small, are carefully blocked off.

cushion in a quiet area will provide your cat with the means to escape any loud or stressful situations they may have simply run away from outdoors, and are especially important if you have small children, dogs or other cats.

A litter tray, or two, will need to be provided in a quiet space away from your moggies feeding area. A cat used to having privacy outdoors will probably prefer a covered tray, which can also help with odour. It is vital to keep the tray clean, removing any clumps or solid matter quickly and changing the entire tray on a regular basis. Whether the cat is used to being outdoors or not, entertainment and scratching are also very important to your cat’s health and wellbeing. A variety of scratching posts will keep his claws in trim, provide a natural function and help to save your furniture.

Toys and activities should be utilised to prevent boredom. Indulge their hunting instincts with bouncing toys, toys on strings which you can pull around the floor and sturdy bell balls which will provide your cat with something to hunt and pounce upon. Food balls or toys, such as a yoghurt drink bottle, washed and filled with dry food can provide lots of entertainment and help your cat to stay active and keep burning calories. You may still need to keep a careful idea on his diet, as indoor cats can be less active and require fewer calories, which leads to weight gain and further health problems.

Rainbow Bridge Dealing with Loss

When a beloved pet dies, it can hit the entire family like a tonne of bricks. Let’s face it, if you are reading this, the chances are that you treat your animals as a member of your family, an adored companion and friend. Many of them are with us for a relatively long time, 20 odd years or more in some cases, and their loss can bring a huge amount of grief and stress. For some owners, a prosaic approach to the happy life they have given their pet is enough to get them through, for others life seems bleak and recovery is much harder. It can even be harder in some ways than losing a human companion; as our pets give us so much unconditional love and support, and can have suffered in silence before the end. It is entirely natural and understandable to feel the grief and loss, and is usually a process which must be worked through. Grief affects people differently, and is often a very individual response depending on your relationship with your pet. The stages of grief are well documented, and you may find you go through the classic denial, anger, guilt and depression cycle. It can also be a cyclical

16

Allow yourself time to grieve & Be patient with your feelings process, coming in waves at different times and according to triggers and reminders. Allow yourself time to grieve. Be patient with your feelings, and understand that they are a normal way to process the loss. Don’t try to bottle those feelings up as this can exacerbate the process. You may be surprised by just how many friends and acquaintances can empathise with the depth of your loss if you speak to them. If you cannot face discussing your loss with people who you may think will see this as ‘just’ a pet, then perhaps try reaching out online. There are some very thoughtful and helpful online forums to remember your pets and talk in depth about you bereavement without having to pour your heart out on a personal basis. Many discuss their pets meeting them on ‘Rainbow Bridge’, based on a poem which explores a beautiful bridge linking heaven to a lush green meadow where they will eventually be reunited with their loving owners. The thought of a pet heaven, with endless treats and butterflies to chase, a happy time waiting for their best friend and no more pain is a lot of comfort for many. Some sort of funeral or ritual can be helpful, such as scattering ashes in a favourite walking place, or planting a memorial tree in your garden. These can help provide closure and give you a location to focus on your pet and enjoy happy memories. Don’t be afraid to seek professional help if you feel your grief and depression are becoming unmanageable. Moving On The decision of when to move on with a new pet is a very individual one. For some people, the thought of replacing their beloved companion is too much in the early days, while others find the joy of a new puppy or rescuing an unwanted animal can lift their depression and refocus the mind. It is wise however to make sure you have properly mourned your pet before you are ready to welcome a new one into both your heart and your home. For some, a pet has been a companion in an otherwise lonely life, and for those people adjustment may be harder. Coming home to an empty house is a common grief trigger, and it may be simply that you need a pet earlier to help provide the companionship and a sense of purpose.

Setting Up a Tropical Fish Tank If keeping tropical fish has taken your fancy, then you will need to take steps to create the perfect environment for your new fish, as they cannot simply be placed in a new tank; instead requiring quite specific conditions to thrive. Your first decision will be tank size and location within your home. The size you choose will determine the number of fish that you can have, so for example in a 70 litre tank you can have approximately 20 fish. This number is also determined by the size of the fish, both at purchase and as they grow! For your first tank it is recommended that you go for a tank that is not too large, approximately 80 to 100 litres should be ample. Start small, keeping your budget down while you learn all the dos’ and don’ts’ of looking after tropical fish. When deciding the location of the fish tank consider if you want to purchase the tank with a purpose built stand or place it on an existing piece of furniture in your home. Some quite elaborate fish tanks can be wall mounted, similar to a picture frame, and there are many shapes of tanks to consider; rectangular, globes, squares and more. Consider: • Keep it away from noise. It doesn’t need to be silent, but avoid placing near TVs, radios, washing machines and fridges. Fish don’t like loud noises and constant exposure to noise will stress them out and eventually negatively influence their

26

well being. • Do not place the aquarium near items which could influence the temperature of the water, e.g. radiators and fires. Most fish need to be kept at a certain temperature and water that is too warm could make them unwell. • Strong light can have a large influence on algae in the aquarium, so try to avoid placing it near strong natural light sources such as windows or skylights. A little natural sunlight is perfect; too much will cause you problems with your water quality in a short space of time which in turn will have a negative effect on your fish’s well being. Once you have decided which tank to purchase, you will require other essentials including a heater with temperature control as the temperature of the water must be at about 21 to 28 degrees, although you should check with your retailer, as this will depend on the variety of fish you have chosen. You will also need a filter to ensure that the water is kept clean at all times. Finally there are the non essential items that make your tank look decorative. The décor can consist of natural stones, resin ornaments, tree roots and plants, all of which need a quick wash in warm water before you add them to the aquarium. If using natural rocks and tree roots make sure they come from an aquatic shop where they will be fit for purpose, whereas the rocks and tree roots you picked up from your garden will affect the water

quality. Lighting needs to be considered and can really make your tank look great; usually the lighting will come with the tank but do check if you need to buy a separate one. Do consider the plants that you use in the tank - you can if you wish purchase plastic water plants which will not decay, or turn brown and affect the water quality, unlike live ones. If you are looking to breed tropical fish later on you should consider the fact that the fish like places they can hide! Before you start filling the aquarium, use a clean, unused cloth in lukewarm water to wipe the inside of the aquarium and use a clean container for the water to avoid any cross contamination. Fill the tank with fresh water from your tap, ensuring the tank is already in its final resting position since it will be very difficult to move once filled. Before adding the substrate of your choice (stones / pebbles) to the bottom of your tank ensure they have been thoroughly rinsed in clean tap water, perhaps in the plastic bucket you used to clean the tank. Now you can add your decorative items, pebbles, plants or ornaments. After this has been done switch on the filter and the temperature control. To kick start the process of achieving the aquarium’s correct biological balance, you need to add water treatments to add the necessary bacteria to the tank. This is essential as the bacteria will help to establish a natural balance and maintain a good water quality. Water conditioner is available from all specialist aquatic retailers, and starter kits to condition both water and fish are also available. Now sit back and relax as you will have to wait at least 2 to 4 weeks before any fish can be added as the filter has to ensure that the correct levels of ammonium and nitrite are maintained in the tank.

the water is purified and in a suitable condition, you can begin to add the fish. Initially, purchase 4 or 5 fish and introduce them slowly. Put the bag containing the fish gently into the tank, so that they are still enclosed and the top of the bag is not submerged. After half an hour or so when the water temperatures are equalised, use a completely clean container to transfer some water from the tank to the bag. Leave for another 15 minutes, remove some water from the bag, and top up again with a small amount from the tank. After another 15 minutes you will be ready to gently tip the bag into the tank, and the fish will swim into their new home. Get advice from your retailer as to the types of fish to introduce. Some fish are hardier when first setting up your tank, some more delicate, for example Angel fish which are not suited for starting a tank. Remember your tropical fish food, and how often you will need to feed them. It is advisable to wait between 2 and 3 weeks before the introduction of each new shoal of fish, so patience is key. Good luck with setting up your tank, and remember; once you have begun, it will need regular maintenance, cleaning and a 10% water change every week to keep it in tip top condition.

You can purchase your own water testing kit or take it for testing at most aquatic centres. When

COMPETITION Win one of two amazing gift boxes filled with high quality cat toys for your beloved moggy!

4cats – the company name says it all!! A family run business based in southern Germany, making high quality catnip and valerian cat toys for many years – the story all started with a family member making small pillows filled with valerian and selling them to local pet shops to raise funds for a cat rescue organisation. As time went by, the family realised that the cat toys should be made available to more than just the local cats in their town of Stolberg. Fast forward to 2018 and most pet shops in Germany now stock the 4cats range, from small independent shops all the way through to the biggest chains, and sales continue to grow year on year. We are also now exporting our toys around the world including to both the Middle and Far East. In the UK, 4cats is in partnership with leading UK distributor Pedigree Wholesale, who stock the full range of 4cats toys for distribution to pet shop chains and independent pet shops throughout the country.

2 32

All 4cats toys are designed, manufactured and tested in Germany at our own Stolberg facility in Aachen to the highest possible standards. Only the best quality catnip and valerian are used in our products. For the catnip toys a special formula, developed in house after extensive testing, is used... 4catsnip. This particular, 100% organic, recipe has proved to be highly effective, even amongst cats that do not normally react to catnip at all!

Forever looking to develop our products further, this year we launched a premium range of toys in the UK. This new product line uses extra special materials incorporating sturdy strings and tassels tailored to encourage the natural hunting instinct of cats. Feedback from customers and their cats has been very positive.

And now is your chance to win an amazing box that contains all of our toys in both valerian and catnip ďŹ lling with a total RRP of approximately ÂŁ220! To enter, simply go to www.petsandanimals.co.uk and answer this simple question:

In which country did the 4cats brand originate?

Dogs Have Owners, Cats Have Staff...

Most dog owners will tell you that they have a loyal, loving hound who greets them joyfully on their return from work, acts as a faithful companion to the kids, or can be heroic, silly, protective or dumb. Cat owners on the other hand are just as likely to tell you that their cat behaves like the Egyptian Royalty she knows she simply must be descended from; ignoring attention, scarpering when called, and prowling around the neighbourhood cosying up to any soft hearted wretch willing to dish out the kitty food.

The relationship has roots in the work of these animals with herding and hunting; as well as guarding, and although few pet dogs are properly working animals today, many of these instincts can be found in modern dogs. The domestication of wolves made for an interesting relationship; partially removing the threat to valuable cattle, and providing wolves with a steady food source, while helping humans with the hunt and making the two species happy allies.

These are massive generalisations, of course. We have a cat who walks us to the local shopping precinct, comes when called and responds well to commands, but often enough, both species conform to their stereotype.

Of course it could be argued that the lack of available work for the modern dog, in addition to the cowing of his predatory instinct, may have reduced his usefulness, thus making many of the

Some of us of course love both equally, but often we express a preference - what is it that makes us ‘dog people’ or ‘cat people’? The domestication of dogs is a well documented part of our culture, dating back to the earliest period of human development, possibly even as far back as 30,000 B.C. The relationship has long been one of compromise and teamwork, and theories abound as to its roots. It is likely that the ancient canine, the Grey Wolf, dog’s closest ancestor, scavenged around human encampments, and those who interacted well with humanity were likely better fed and had a good chance of both surviving and passing on these traits to their offspring.

52

traits so highly prized by millennia of humanity somewhat redundant in the modern world. That said, dogs are intrinsically social animals, hard wired to respond to family or pack, and display an amazing intelligence at times.

“ Some of us of course love both equally, but often we express a preference - what is it that makes us ‘dog people’ or ‘cat people’? ” Ask anyone who owns a collie, who will tell you that even a closed fridge is not safe! Dogs respond to commands, understand some expressions of emotion, and tend to display signs of empathy, making them mans best friend in a variety of ways. Most owners adore their dog for the companionship and unreserved, undying affection many breeds offer rather than their hunting skills, but assistance dogs are trained and beloved the world over for their intelligence and protective instinct as much as their soppy side. Cats are a whole different kettle of fish, if you’ll excuse the pun. Although not specifically working animals, cats have had a job throughout history – the removal of vermin, which for millennia has been a far more important purpose than it would be today. Theories vary about the domestication of cats, although it seems likely that in a similar way to the Grey Wolf, the cat lingered near human settlements. They were likely attracted less by the scraps and detritus of human life and more by the small mammals who in turn were attracted by human rubbish! Admired for their hunting abilities and useful for their ability to keep rats

or snakes away from household and food storage (and keeping vermin borne disease down) the cat probably became a familiar and welcome sight near human settlements. Unlike dogs, most cats were too small to pose a threat to cattle, and so would have roamed at will. Nonetheless, it would be hard to say that they have had an integral role in human evolution in perhaps the way dogs have. The cat was of course venerated and adored by the ancient Egyptians, appearing in artwork from around 4,000 years ago, although there is evidence to suggest that cats have lived with humans as far back as 8,000 years ago so perhaps they have. Despite their reputation for aloof behaviour, cats as we know can be very affectionate, loving creatures. Harder to train in any meaningful way, cats are independent and often much more wide roaming. Most have not lost their predatory instinct to the extent that dogs have; indeed many are skilled and successful hunters offering up their prey to their human family. This arguably makes them much less dependent on humans, and it is clear from the numbers of feral cats that it is much easier for them to survive alone. This makes them a more independent species, and explains some of their less affectionate traits. The air of disdain, the apparent hot and cold affection, and the intelligent, self aware appearance of cats appeals to many pet owners in a way the dependent, loving dog just cannot. Presumably, the best of both worlds would be one of each, but of course that will create yet another hierarchy in your house again…

Pet Immersion Alarm Alerts you if your pet falls in the pool, pond or off the boat. Your dog or cat may be able to swim, but will drown within minutes if not trained to get out of a pool. Over 5,000 dogs drown each year in backyard pools. Safety Turtle works with ALL Fresh Water, natural [lake, river and pond] or man made [pool, hot tub and pond]. No installation required. A loud alarm instantly sounds at the Base Station when the Turtle is immersed in water. The alarm continues to sound unil it is reset. Rain, light spray or ground moisture won’t trigger the alarm. The Turtle sock accessory further reduces sensitivity.

Tooth Care For Dogs

As a responsible owner, keeping your dogs teeth in tip top condition is a very important part of caring for them If you have ever suffered with tooth pain yourself, you will know it is simply excruciating. It affects your ability to eat, to sleep and to just get on with every day life. Now imagine that in a dog, who cannot communicate his pain, who’s desire to eat is outweighed by the agony in his teeth? It is a simply dreadful thought and of course your dog can do nothing himself to ensure he has healthy teeth. As a responsible owner, keeping your dogs teeth in tip top condition is a very important part of caring for them. Dogs can suffer with gingivitis, which is gum inflammation much like humans who have poor oral hygiene can do and is usually caused by a build up of plaque or tartar. Gingivitis can be quite serious, causing gums to bleed, begin to recede and lead to teeth loosening prematurely. It can also lead to periodontal disease which is an infection between tooth and gum which is very painful and can cause tooth loss. Both of these conditions can be treated, to an extent, but prevention is vastly better than attempting a cure. Teeth can also get broken, chewing on unsuitable items or simply with over exuberance, which left untreated can cause severe pain and in some cases a traumatic infection. This will be particularly painful if the pulp (the pink tissue inside the tooth) is exposed, meaning the pain will be from exposed nerves as well as the force of the initial breakage. Dogs can be very stoical, hiding pain symptoms, so a broken tooth should always be checked by a vet. It is also important to check any damage has not affected surrounding teeth or happened because of underlying problems causing a weakness in the tooth prior to breakage. Regular brushing combined with teeth friendly chew toys is a good start. Not only will this help keep teeth clean and rot free, but is also a good way to control doggie halitosis too. Bad breath in dogs in not uncommon, but if it really is

unpleasant, this is often an early sign of tooth problems. Use a specially made brush and toothpaste, and try to brush at a time when your dog has been exercised and is more likely to sit still for you. Get him used to the feeling of the brush and the taste of the paste, and build him up to a full clean. Avoid ordinary toothpaste as fluoride is extremely toxic for dogs. You should aim for at least every other day to avoid any plaque buildup reacting with your dog’s saliva and turning into hard to remove tartar. Examine your dog’s lips, gums and teeth regularly; looking for healthy pink gums and clean white teeth. If there are any signs of inflammation, lumps, dribbling, or excessively bad breath, it is time for a visit to the vet. You can buy specific dog tooth brushing kits from the vet or major suppliers – do NOT use human toothpaste as this is not suitable for dogs. Palatable toothpaste and a finger brush are perfect. It is a good idea to spend some time getting the dog used to the idea with very gentle, brief regular brushes to start with. Brush in small circular movement to remove tartar and food, a couple of times a week should be sufficient. Make the most of chew toys, especially the dental friendly ones, as the dogs natural instinct to chew can help keep the teeth clean by scraping them against the toys. Rawhide has had a bad press lately due to is chemical manufacturing, so ask the vet for advice on the best products. Even with these prevention measures, tooth care can still be an issue. Warning signs include: • Trouble eating • Pawing at the oral area or face • Terrible breath and / or dribbling excessively • Red or swollen looking gums All these signs should be taken as a warning to get your dog to the vet pronto.

Dogs on Holiday One of the reasons Brits have had such a longstanding love affair with the outdoor life is the ability to take your dogs on holiday

70

One of the reasons Brits have had such a longstanding love affair with the outdoor life is the ability to take your dogs on holiday. Whether you camp or prefer to take a tourer or motorhome with you, this is a brilliant option for dog lovers everywhere. No kennel fees, no worry about leaving faithful Fido behind while you go off to enjoy your summer holidays. Fortunately, there are also more and more hotels, guest houses and lodges offering pet friendly accommodation than ever before, so if camping is not your style, there are other options. Pet friendly also means your hound can take advantage of all the holiday joys, including long walks through the woods, sunny afternoons at the beach and a refreshing dip in the sea or a nearby lake. You can all make doggy friends and get some exercise too.

Consider: Welcome? Are dogs welcome on the site you have chosen? What restrictions are in place regarding their behaviour? Do check as turning up with several large dogs in tow only to be turned away could literally ruin your holiday.

Feeding: Take a supply of your usual food, plus a few suitable treats for bribery. Yes, there are supermarkets everywhere, but if you have a fussy pooch or one on a restricted diet, a midnight dash to the 24 hour supermarket may not yield quite the right results, and the last thing you want is a food refuser or worse, a poorly tum. Make sure water is easily available as you would at home.

Tethering: Most campsites will have a rule about tethering. Good pet shops should sell these, plus a stake to anchor it firmly. If in doubt, a flexi style lead tethered with the stop pushed at the correct length will work. I’d also say take a spare lead. You can never have too many – if one does go astray, it will stop you being marooned with no way of taking the dog out.

+Extras

Toileting: Make sure you are happy that your dog is well trained not to mess in your living quarters, and take puppy pads and plenty of disposal bags. Make sure you clean up after your dog as religiously, or even more so, than at home. Beaches, hotel grounds and campsites alike are usually very family friendly, so do make sure you are fastidious with this.

Sleep: If your dog is crated or sleeps in a particular basket or bed, take it with you. Try to keep to her usual routine which will make it easier when you return home, but should also stop any nearby neighbours complaining about noisy pets. This is even more crucial when camping as noise can carry a long way and keep your neighbours awake.

Health: Just to reiterate – a car or caravan interior can reach baking temperatures in a matter of minutes. If you take your dog, be prepared to look for pubs which allow dogs, or eat outside. Leaving your dog in the car is absolutely not advised, even for short periods. If you have chosen a hotel, check the policy on leaving animals unattended. Some may require a deposit against damage or even offer a ‘pet sitting’ service so you can go out for the evening.

Last but not least, take a good supply of old towels. Wet dog in a small space or rented accommodation is not pleasant, and who knows what your mutt may decide to roll in on your long forest walks!

71

Puppy Love Deciding to adopt a puppy is a big decision and one which entails a large degree of responsibility. It is a decision which the whole family should participate in, and there are many factors to consider. Adopting any animal means significant upheaval and changes to your home environment and your everyday life. You can’t, for example, just decide to go away for a few days without having sufficient plans for the dog. Or even be home late from work regularly.

Puppies are excitable, time intensive pets. Ask yourself a few basic questions: • Why have we decided on a dog? • What are the costs? • Do I have the time in my life to give to the dog? • Is my home suitable for a dog?

72

• What commitments do you have – will you be leaving the dog home alone for large portions of the day? • Are we able to give the dog the physical and mental stimulation it requires to thrive? • Will a dog fit into our family dynamic, with children, babies, relatives and other pets? This should give you the basis of a shortlist to start looking into which breed you are thinking of adopting. Think about size, temperament, characteristics. If, for example, you choose a collie or terrier, you are choosing a dog bred for work, which will need lots of exercise and mental stimulation. Some breeds are generally better with children, require less exercise and so on. Some breeds also have tendencies towards certain health issues, so it is worth checking to ensure that there is nothing likely which you will not be

73

able to deal with. Breeders, owners and clubs are a good starting point for research, as are the forums and Kennel Club. You could visit Crufts, or the London Pet Show or similar to speak to a variety of breeders, and perhaps meet a few!

available and works well), and consider covering expensive flooring with plastic matting until you are certain puppy has grown out of both soiling and chewing. Children and puppies

Puppy Proofing: There’s an old saying about moving everything in your home up a foot when you have children, and the same applies to puppies! It is a good idea to get down to ‘birds eye’ view, and see what is in place on the lower levels of your home. Watch for trailing wires which can be tripped over, or more dangerously, chewed. Move anything precious or breakable items, and cover fire places and plants. Some house plants are very toxic, so move them out of reach, and consider fitting child catches to low level cupboards and refuse bins. A stair gate may also be useful to stop your puppy going upstairs, or at least exploring unattended. Think of ways to protect valuable furnishings, by moving or protecting with spray (bitter apple is

74

Bringing a puppy into your home will be exciting for your children, but do remember that it is very important to introduce some basic ground rules for both the children and the dog: • The puppy will likely be very nervous at his separation from parent or siblings, and will need gentle care and attention, space and peace to settle in properly. • Use calm, gentle voices around the puppy, and move calmly and decisively. • Do not tease or over handle the puppy, particularly until he settles in, and make sure he is handled under supervision at all times. • Don’t wake the puppy – like babies, they need their rest to grow and thrive. • Check that any toys within reach are safe.

• Avoid rough and tumble play, or tug with the dog. This can not only set behavioural precedent, but lead the dog to see the child as an equal or even inferior within the family ‘pack’ which may lead to biting or aggression in a puppy testing the social order. • Do include children in the training – show them how to play gently, reward with praise and or treats for good behaviour, and calling the puppy over. Feeding a puppy Like babies, puppies grow at an incredible rate in comparison to adults. They have small stomachs which need feeding regularly to ensure they get all the nutrients they need for optimum growth without over feeding. A good breeder or welfare centre will be able to advise on the best diet for your puppy, and give you information of what they have been weaned onto to help you to make the transition smooth. You may choose wet or dry food, a mixture or specially formulated puppy food. Some are ‘complete’ foods, other ‘complementary’,

as in, a supplement to a complete food, so ensure your puppy’s main diet is suitable for all his nutrition requirements. Whatever you and your breeder decide, be consistent to avoid stomach upset or irritation, and purchase the best you can afford. Stools are a good indicator to health, so check they are firm and dark. Any stomach problems should show, and you can discuss a different brand with your vet. Ensure clean water is left available at all times, but do dispose of uneaten food after half an hour – this will get the puppy into good feeding habits and ensure that he does not eat contaminated food. Although healthy treats are an excellent way to help you to train your puppy, do be aware that many commercially prepared treats contain sugars and proteins unsuitable for dogs, so do check the labels carefully to make sure you aren’t doing any harm. Do remind the family that ordinary food is not usually suitable for dogs, they do not need leftovers, and some human food, such as chocolate, is in fact dangerous to feed your dog.
