elcome to the Bath Life Awards 2021. I’m going to say that again, welcome to the Bath Life Awards 2021, because it’s such a marvellous thing to be able to say. The Bath Life Awards are always pretty spectacular to be fair – the unashamed celebrating of the city, its talent, its businesses, its creatives, its entrepreneurs, and the unbridled joy of getting to hang out together, catch up, toast each other’s success. Now set the 2021 Bath Life Awards against a backdrop of such recent thinking, that we might not see normal ever again, and we have the right to amplify our happiness at being here to the power of a hundred. It’s thanks to you who entered, sponsored, judged, turned up this evening that we can make this happen. There are 450 of us here tonight, to applaud and cheer for those shortlisted from a record number of entries. It’s going to be a ceremony of tears, laughing, and joyous hollering. There’s also the aftershow at Sub 13 which promises more of the above, the chance to congratulate the winners and commiserate with the runners-up, with the added bonus of a little light dancing. All that remains to say is a personal thanks for all the support you’ve shown the Bath Life team in recent times – we are so honoured to be a part of telling your stories and sharing your successes. Do come and say hello to myself, and the deputy editor Lydia Tewkesbury. If you need a little help locating us, we’ll be the ones crying, laughing, and joyously hollering. lats has been wittily yomping his way around the corporate circuit for a number of years establishing himself as an accomplished awards host and after dinner speaker. He’s a great host: guaranteed to provide the wit and flair needed to make our Awards yet more memorable. He’s also guaranteed to teeter on the very brink of just being a bit too cheeky – and then go some way beyond that, of course. Since making his debut on TV back in 2005, Flats has gained increasing respect as a studio guest, co-commentator and presenter as well as journalist. Flats retired from professional rugby in June 2012 due to a career-ending injury, and has established himself as a firm favourite in the corporate hospitality circuit. He is also an increasingly familiar presence on TV – often seen on BT Sport as a studio guest or co-commentator for its Premiership Rugby coverage. In 2019, Flats was a key part of ITV’s Rugby World Cup team to co-commentate on its live matches, while he has also been an integral part of its Six Nations and Women’s Rugby World Cup coverage. Later this year, Japan won’t know what has hit it when he pops up for the Rugby World Cup coverage. Flats is one half of the hugely successful ‘Flats and Shanks’ rugby podcast. Such is its success that, in 2018, the duo was announced as presenters of ITV’s first Six Nations podcast which debuted at number one in the iTunes Podcast chart the first week of its release. He is a famed columnist for Bath Life, sometimes even managing to get his column in on time. “I’m looking forward to a night of fun,” says Flats. “Bring it on, Bath!” And bring it on, Flats…

e would like to reassure everyone that we are very mindful of our duty of care to all attendees, participants and those working at the Awards. We are following current government guidelines for delivering events very closely. Please read these points below. This advice is also on the Bath Life Awards site and has been supplied to attendees. HEALTH & SAFETY

There will be multiple hand sanitising stations throughout the venue. Please remember to regularly clean your hands throughout.

Facemasks generally: these are not obligatory but please feel free to wear one if you are more comfortable, and please respect those who choose to wear one.

Facemasks specifically: we recommend that you wear a facemask in areas such as the reception and in the toilets.

All attendees will be asked to show proof of one of the following on arrival at the Awards: • Double vaccination via Covid Pass (NHS app) or vaccination card. • Negative test result taken in the last 24 hours (NHS app or text message confirmation). • If you are unable to provide either of these, you will be required to take a lateral flow test and entry will be permitted on sight of a negative result.

The venue has been fully risk assessed and attendee numbers have been limited to allow for a safe capacity.

All attendees are encouraged to take a lateral flow test within 24 hours of when you are due to arrive at the Awards, and register the result with UK Government.

If you are experiencing Covid symptoms, or in the last two weeks have been in contact with anyone with Covid symptoms, we politely request that you don’t attend. You should get a PCR test and follow the UK Government’s stay-at-home guidance.

All event spaces including tables will be open to attendees throughout the evening from 6.30pm and we encourage guests to take seats as early as possible. To help facilitate that, please familiarise yourself with where your table is and also let your teams and guests know. The table plan will be emailed to attendees no later than 24 hours before the Awards.

Communal areas are being cleaned regularly during the evening, including the toilets. Bar and food preparation adheres to hospitality government guidelines.

We recommend that drinks orders can be made from your seat to reduce crowding at the bar.

Ed McKenzie PRINCIPAL, MCKENZIE & CO. FINANCIAL CONSULTANTS Ed has lived and worked in Bath his whole life, working in the financial advice industry since he left university. Ed spends his free time engaged in sporting activities, coaching and charitable endeavours, including the recent 24-hour Ski-Erg challenge for Bath Rugby Foundation. Harriet Barber OWNER, B HAIRDRESSING Harriet has been working in the hairdressing industry for 16 years and has been running her own hair salon for five years. B Hairdressing is Harriet’s absolute pride and joy; it was one of the first gender neutral and vegan salons in the south west.

Helen Rich FOUNDER, TASTE OF BATH Helen started her career in retail management, as a trouble-shooter, travelling the country. In 2013, after years of fixing other businesses, she knew she wanted to be an entrepreneur. Launched in 2015, Taste of Bath links small Bath producers with over 140 businesses gifting clients and a new ecommerce audience.

Jamaar Semper JUNIOR SOUS CHEF, LUCKNAM PARK HOTEL Jamaar is a junior sous chef at Lucknam Park Hotel, originating from Bristol. Katie Vander Woerd DIRECTOR, MALLORY Katie grew up in Bath and joined Mallory in 2014 as the fifth generation of the business, which has been family-owned and run since 1898. Kelly Marie FOUNDER, KELLY MARIE KITCHENS Kelly runs a successful boutique kitchen design company and contracts out to her team of friendly installers from her base in Widcombe. Kelly Marie Kitchens specialises in beautiful bespoke designs and installations of high-quality kitchens. Paul Daniels PARTNER, ROYDS WITHY KING Paul joined Royds Withy King in 1993 as a trainee solicitor and is now a real estate partner and the commercial strategic lead for the firm.
