HEALTH, WELLBEING AND MEDICAL DEEP CONNEXIONS It is sometimes difficult to understand why children struggle with their balance and co-ordination, to complete everyday tasks, learn new things or cope with new situations, as there seems to be no obvious explanation. The reasons for these struggles may be the continued presence of baby/primitive reflexes within the child’s central nervous system. Neuro-Developmental Therapy (NDT) INPP Method is the assessment and diagnosis of physical factors that may underlie such specific learning difficulties, underachievements and behavioral problems. Face The better your skin looks, the better your make-up will look on top of it. Right now, there’s no better time to ramp up your skincare regime and get your complexion in tip-top condition. Charlotte Jordan, manager at LittleLAB on Broad Street, suggests indulging in their signature Fig+Yarrow LED light therapy facial, which she says will create a flawless base and banish dry skin caused by the cold weather. Thierry Davis, a make-up artist at Bobbi Brown on Old Bond Street, agrees that facials are the way forward; he often prefers at-home sessions rather than sitting in a salon. “A facial gives you that time to relax and unwind. I just pop on a mask once a week – my favourite is our Skin Nourish mask – then I grab a hot chocolate, snuggle up and watch a film while the product gets to work.” At Frontlinestyle on Monmouth Street, a treatment they recommend to stimulate a natural luminosity is a CACI Synergy facial, which includes microdermabrasion and skin-peeling to achieve

instant radiance and super-soft, glowing skin. For more advanced treatments, such as facial thread veins, Hannah Paradise, the owner of Enhance Medispa on George Street, wouldn’t recommend having these over busy social times; best to put these off until a quieter time year.

Make-up If you haven’t got the foggiest how to wing a liner or bake an under-eye, then head to the experts at LittleLAB for a party make-up workshop with your friends. Or just get your airbrush make-up done by them on the day of a special event. A full face of make-up to go is also available at Frontlinestyle, as are one-to-one lessons.

The top ’dos, according to Bath’s hair whizzes David Maxwell at David Maxwell Hairdressing on Argyle Street “Rich auburn colours will be used – lots of lovely Moroccan reds, sunset tones and copper spices to complement soft, feminine cuts. For parties, this will look beautiful in gentle waves or pinned up in a relaxed bun or a loose plait.” Katie Gould-Hitchcock at BA1 Hair, Bartlett Street “A big, bouncy polished blow-dry never goes out of date and is always a very popular choice.” Zara Perry at Zara Perry Hairdressing on St James Parade “I’m loving the simple, elegant ponytail look. With a wave in the ends, a ponytail can look romantic and soft; or for a more striking look, a high pony is one to wow the crowds with.” Katy Vass at Number Twenty Six Hair on Broad Street “Braids and up-dos finished with bows or vintagestyle slides will be popular. We are also loving sleek and straight hair worn with a middle parting, adding hair tinsel or glitter for that party factor.” Matthew Carr at Artizan on George Street “Natural curls are in for the girls; and, for the boys, we like short funky cuts with an ’80s theme.”

Carr. “Pampering is what we are all about.” “Regular trims keep the hair healthy and encourages growth,” adds Katy Vass, owner and head stylist at Number Twenty Six Hair on Broad Street. “Conditioning treatments keep the hair strong and healthy; we love the INNOluxe and MUK options – a godsend in the colder weather, as they repair dry, damaged or brittle hair, increasing strength and reducing breakage.”

Body One or two days before a party is the time to give your skin a healthy-looking glow, says Frances Urwin, managing director at Frontlinestyle on Monmouth Street, who recommends an in-salon Sienna X spray tan. “The day before your tan, wax or shave any unwanted hair, allowing your pores plenty of time to close, otherwise you’ll end up with a dotty finish,” she says. “Also, paint your nails and toenails to prevent them from being stained by the tan, and buff away dead skin cells with an exfoliator to reveal the ultimate smooth base. On the day of the tan, don’t apply deodorant, perfume or body lotion as these act as a barrier and stop self tan from developing properly.”

Finishing touches Brows are the beauty obsession of the decade, and are the key to creating a clean and striking look. To perfect them, Charlotte Jordan at LittleLAB suggests having them tinted, threaded and trimmed every two or three weeks. As for lashes, Russian Volume extensions are her recommendation, as they give a full, glamorous, fluttery finish. Or maybe you want to try an LVL lash-lifting treatment, which lasts up to eight weeks, as proposed by Stephanie Horan, the owner of Glow beauty on Bartlett Street. www.mediaclash.co.uk I BATH LIFE I 49

Breathing Space There is a growing appetite for classes that aim to improve our sense of wellbeing. So, what can you do locally? Harriet Noble tried a breathing session with expert Rowena Hunt Photos by Betty Bhandari

I

’ve always been a big fan of yoga, but I’d never done a class that focussed purely on breathing. So when I signed up for one of Rowena Hunt’s breathing classes, in Widcombe, Bath, I hoped it might provide some of the benefits that yoga has brought me – namely feeling re-energised and a bit de-stressed. But as the day of the class grew closer, I did feel a bit apprehensive; the classes I’d been to before had been in a room full of people, but this was going to be a one-to-one, which sounded, well, a bit intense and awkward. I needn’t have worried. Rowena was warm and down-to-earth, with a very chilled-out temperament; someone you just instinctively feel comfortable with. As well as teaching breathwork sessions, she is a qualified yoga teacher, wellness consultant, and nutritional and lifestyle coach, so she has a good understanding of what goes on with us complex humans, both in our heads and in our bodies. Her studio – a light, bright conservatory area attached to her family home – is calm, too, with white walls, candles and glass doors that open up onto the

garden. Rowena told me that the house used to be a bunker in WWII; so, rather fittingly, it has always been a place people go to, to feel safe.

What it’s all about? Before the class, Rowena had asked me to fill in a form so she could tailor-make a session just for me. We also talked a bit about breathing; she explained that everything we do, whether we are still or walking, singing or exercising, results in our breath changing. Because it is a thing that always changes, it makes sense to be more aware of it and, in doing so, this can perhaps impact all areas in our life. This is common sense really, but I’d never thought of it in those terms before. Rowena also used a metaphor that I found a helpful visualisation: she said that we can liken the mind to a lake that is disturbed by waves and ripples. The process of yoga and breathing begins to smooth the lake, to lessen the ripples of the mind until, perhaps just for the slightest moment, the lake becomes still, like glass, and we are able to see through to what lies beneath. This is when we can access the truth of ourselves, the essence of who we are. www.mediaclash.co.uk I BATH LIFE I 51

health & beauty The session We started off by lying down and doing a few visualisation practices. I was guided through a process whereby I put aside all my worries and stresses so I could focus on the present. In my head, I imagined myself putting all my worries in a cardboard box, then putting the box in the garden. They were not gone, but they were not looming in my head. Rowena talked me through a process where I had to think about being kind to myself – something we should all be doing. We also did gratitude meditation and forgiveness meditation, and, after that, I felt much calmer and bit more centred.

The lotus position is no problem for Rowena

The breathing… We then delved into a series of breathing techniques. We practised some breath techniques which are good for alleviating stress and remedying digestion issues; Rowena explained a bit about each and how they can be helpful. One of them is called the lion’s roar and involves stretching out your fingers, sticking out your tongue, and exhaling with much gusto, producing a hissy noise. I felt a little silly and self-conscious at first, but it was also liberating; I felt my body and mind untightening, with tension I didn’t even know was there just melting away. Other exercises included one called the humming bee, where we made a humming sound. We both did this one together in unison; the repetition of the breathing exercises brought about a peacefulness in my head which felt almost meditative. Some of the exercises were challenging, like the one that alleviates digestion issues – requiring you

“The lion’s roar involves stretching out your fingers and sticking out your tongue”

to deliberately lose control of different parts of your body when you breath in and out. Rowena was encouraging throughout and said it sometimes takes people a while to be able to master these techniques. When we had finished, Rowena gave me a sheet with all the exercises we’d done that day, with instructions on how to do them at home. Before I left, she also told me a bit about her career journey: she has taught breathwork to all sorts of people, from pilots to high-level business people, and has seen the many and varied benefits, from stress reduction to improved sleep, which I can readily believe as I feel simultaneously calm and balanced. So, who is a breathing class for? In truth, anyone who is interested in improving their health and managing stress. I think that’s all of us, isn’t it? n For more: www.rowenahunt.com www.mediaclash.co.uk I BATH LIFE I 53

hether you follow a strict plant-based diet or not, this is the season when filling up on hearty, healthy food is just what our bodies are craving. And these days the choice is so broad and varied, you never feel like you are missing out. Here we chat to the owners of some of Bath’s veggie-friendly eateries to find out what’s on the menu this year.

You’ve recently taken over the business; tell us about the new offering...

What makes your establishment unique?

While we are fully vegan, most of our menu is also gluten free – or can be altered so it is GF. We are also the only place in town with a focus on dips.

“We are the only place in town with a focus on dips”

We want to be a place for friends to catch up, grab a coffee, food or just a cake; it’s a relaxed space to feel at ease and forget any stresses. We have a neutral colour scheme around the café with a few plants to create an earthy feel. Our menu is simple but should please the ‘just a little peckish’ to ‘staving hungry’ folk. I love our “whole cauliflower” which is designed to show the full culinary potential of the cauliflower. I also love our donkey carrot starter, which is meant to show how even the humblest of veg can be special. There’s a growing veggie scene in Bath – what makes your establishment stand out?

We love plants; we are vegan by default, but what really gets us going is working with beautiful plants. We are lucky enough to be the only vegan restaurant in the country in the Michelin Guide 2019 as well as the Good Food Guide 2019. We won the Trencherman’s Award for Creativity and Innovation 2019, against such eateries as Restaurant Nathan Outlaw and Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen.

What can we look forward to in 2019?

We’ll be mostly working out the kinks and ensuring that we keep innovating and getting better. A great restaurant delivers great food day after day, no matter what the weather or who is tired; this has to be our goal for the next 12 months. www.acornrestaurant.co.uk Roots & Shoots, brunel square Andrew McMahon and Matt Craig Roots and shoots has recently opened up. Tell us all about it...

It’s somewhere between a café, coffee shop, deli and a takeaway. We have a few seats inside and a cosy outside space, so it keeps that informal feel. Bath has a steadily growing vegan and plant-based food scene but there’s not loads of quick and convenient options that cater for the health-conscious and people with dietary requirements.

Roots & Shoots?

Tasty, healthy food in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We are friendly and chatty and will hopefully have you coming back for more. It’s cosy and there is always a nice stew, soup or baked sweet potato to warm you up. What are you serving at the moment?

A close shave

It’s the hottest topic among the beauty crowd, and it essentially involves shaving your face. Here’s Ané Auret’s dermaplaning review...

W

hen I first heard of dermaplaning – exfoliating facial skin with a very fine scalpel – I had flashbacks to the first time I started to shave. Okay, this was senior school and it was my legs not my face, but I was worried that the effect might be the same – what starts out as one little shave can lead to hairs coming back faster and thicker. But as someone who is obsessed with finding natural solutions to healthy glowing skin, I was intrigued by dermaplaning. Pain-free, safe and noninvasive, it promises to decongest and brighten your skin, with no downtime. After lots of research on the pros and cons, I found the lovely Alison from Brow Works right here in Bath. Just spending an hour in

Alison’s company feels uplifting and like a treatment in itself, and her dermaplaning skills are also top notch. What is it, in a nutshell?

Dermaplaning is a relatively simple form of (chemical-free) exfoliation that uses a surgical scalpel blade to gently shave the skin’s surface. This removes the top layer of dead skin cells, dirt, impurities and fine vellus hair (also known as peach fuzz) most commonly around the cheeks and hairline. It’s for you if…

You want to have baby-soft, glowy skin. A whole range of high-profile beauty influencers have raved about its youthifying effects; Alison explained that it tackles fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, enlarged pores and dullness. I’m 43 and, while I have fairly strong skin, I have pigmentation from growing up in

beauty

“High-profile beauty influencers have raved about its youthifying effects” the South African sun. Alison assured me I would see a marked difference in my complexion overall. It’s not for you if…

You have active acne or other inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema or rosacea. But if you’re in any doubt, Alison will help you decide whether this is the right procedure for you. Blow me away with its benefits...

The most immediate benefit is how incredibly smooth your skin feels, but it also: • promotes deeper product penetration, boosting the effects of skincare products • boosts cell turnover • minimises scarring, pigmentation and fine lines • prepares your skin beautifully for makeup Most frequently asked (pre-treatment) question...

Will the hair grow back extra dark with a vengeance and double in surface area? Alison assured me that vellus hair is very different from the ‘terminal’ hair that grows on other areas of our bodies, and that it wouldn’t grow back darker or stubbly. The treatment...

I felt a little queasy when I first saw the scalpel, but I knew I was in good hands. After reclining in Alison’s chair, she thoroughly cleansed my face and then applied a very thin layer of balm to give the blade some slippage on the skin. With gentle, feather-light upward strokes, and only the slightest amount of pressure, Alison held the blade at a 45-degree angle

all the way through the treatment, so there is no risk of piercing the skin. The results...

I had to stop myself from touching my face constantly afterwards since my skin felt so incredibly smooth, especially for the first week. My appointment was at 10am and although I didn’t book any meetings for the rest of the day, it would’ve been totally fine if I did. There was no significant redness at all. I used a gentle cleanser and felt that my other skincare products absorbed so much better. Applying makeup showed the biggest difference, since my skin was so even and smooth. Aftercare...

It’s really important to not use any exfoliating treatments or be exposed to the sun (without sunscreen) for up to 10 days after the treatment. I left with a good layer of sunscreen applied and I only put on makeup the next day. Would I do it again?

Absolutely. Hair will most likely start to grow back after about seven days, but it’s recommended that you repeat the treatment every three or four weeks. For many of us, this may not suit our schedules or budget, but I know for sure that if my skin feels a little dull, or before a big event, I’ll definitely pay Alison a visit. Age before beauty

This content was taken from Bath Life issue 383. This information was correct at the time

Lisa Evans visited Bath’s Enhance Medispa for an anti-ageing DNA test that gave her a skincare prescription to defy her genetic destiny

THE SCIENCE BIT

The idea of a DNA test that will give you the tools to defy your genetic skin-ageing destiny may sound a bit too sci-fi to be taken seriously, but this technology is the future of skincare. Founded by genetic nutritionist Kate Llewelyn-Waters of the Corsham-based DNA Plan, The Anti-Ageing Skin DNA Report highlights your risk in the main areas associated with ageing, and will put your genes under the microscope to provide insight into everything from your susceptibility to wrinkle formation, to how to improve collagen production. Your genetic fate is not actually set in stone. In the case of skin ageing, skincare ingredients, procedures that precision-target your genetic weaknesses, along with lifestyle and diet changes can prevent deterioration before it even sets in; but you’ve got to know exactly what your skin needs first – there’s no generic, one-size-fits-all answer.

THE TEST

The procedure doesn’t, you’ll be pleased to know, involve any needles; all it takes is a swab of your inside cheek, then you send it off in an envelope and wait for the results to come back from the lab in 21 working days.

“One test will give you the tools to last a lifetime”

76 I BATH LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

The plan gives you nutrition advice, suited to your genetics

What happens next?

Once your results come back, you can then go about counteracting your deficiencies and predispositions with the perfect mix of anti-ageing know-how, tailored

to you. If you do the test through Enhance Medispa in Bath – a salon which has teamed up with DNA Plan exclusively in the city and offers a discount – then you go into the salon for a consultation. I met with the owner, Hannah Paradise, to look at everything in depth. This was very handy as there were 18 pages

health & beauty to go through – which is a lot if you’re not down with science-speak. Hannah explained what the next steps were: the diet changes best suited to me, what professional treatments to get, and what lotions and potions to buy. Ok, hold on a second, I know what you’re thinking: has this now become an exercise to try and get me to spend more money in the salon? I fleetingly thought the same. But, and this ‘but’ is crucial, Hannah doesn’t say that I must have the treatments in this salon, or purchase the specific product brand she sells – that is, medical-grade HydroPeptide – I’m sure it would be preferable if customers did, but that’s not the point. Just one look at the results shows me that this isn’t a way of product-pushing; the brands suggested for my particular skin needs range from Elemis to Marks & Spencer – all of which DNA Plan has no commercial relationships with.

The results

Sure, we all know that everyone will get wrinkly, and taking this test won’t mean that you’ll be a baby-faced nonagenarian, but it’ll give you the tools to slow premature ageing right down. My results showed that I am high risk in the area of sensitivity to refined carbohydrates – which can result in higher levels of glycation, commonly causing Enhance Medispa offers The Anti-Ageing Skin DNA Report (pictured right) exclusively in Bath

issues like premature ageing, wrinkling and thinning skin – I am at medium risk for inflammation, and I have an increased risk of elasticity breakdown. But, to help combat these sensitivities, some of the things the test suggests I do are: • Alter my diet: increase my intake of antioxidantrich foods to counteract free radicals, and eat more omega-3 ingredients to help with inflammation. • Change-up my skincare: use products that have high doses of vitamin C and E and retinol (to help prevent wrinkles) and use a caffeinated body scrub to help counteract cellulite formation. • Treat myself to specialist procedures: such as skinneedling (to increase cellular turnover), LED light therapy (to reduce elasticity breakdown) and radio frequency treatments (to increase collagen production). There’s also a useful list of foods that will particularly suit me, as well as a week’s worth of skin-boosting recipes, some of which are taken from Kate’s new book, The DNA Diet.

IS IT WORTH IT?

In my opinion, yes. One test will give you the tools to last a lifetime. Also, I’ll now actually save money because I’ll spend less on products my skin doesn’t necessarily need, and pump the money into a specific one it does. Your genes don’t change, but your lifestyle can, and, by identifying genetic traits, this test can specifically pinpoint what dietary, skincare, exercise and lifestyle changes will keep you looking and feeling your best for life. I’ll take that. n

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Want great brows?

M

icroblading is a semi-permanent make-up technique, proven and approved as a safe beauty procedure by doctors and valued beauty reporters and professionals alike. It is achieved using a manual, handheld tool, and is the best and latest technique in eyebrow semi-permanent tattooing. The shape of the eyebrow is designed and measured according to the face, then the best tools are used to help achieve the desired look. The procedure is slowly created through two stages: the initial treatment and then the top up. The top up is recommended four to six weeks after the treatment date. The pigment is chosen on the day to match the natural eyebrow colour; the colour is really dark during the first week and looks bigger and bolder, but after a week it starts to reduce and lose 50-60 percent of its intensity. If you think the colour is too dark, do not try to remove it yourself; please be patient, and wait up to 10 days for the colour to fade on its own. Up until the time you return for your top up colour, there will be a 10 to 15 percent loss of the drawn strokes. These are re-done in the second session. Strokes are always drawn in the direction of the natural hair growth to achieve the most natural look. Every treatment is performed with disposable sterile tools, and the pigments used are produced to

Eyebrows are the frame of the face and – when created correctly, in line with your features, bone structure and face shape – can emphasise and lift your eyes, giving you an instant lift the highest standards. (The ones we use are Soft Tap microblading pigments.) The colour duration primarily depends on how oily the skin is, as the oilier the skin, the shorter the life expectancy of the colour. Please note that sweating and sun exposure also reduce colour faster. On average, the expected time until a new procedure and refreshment is needed is between 12-16 months, but with oily skin it’s more like 6-8 months. Please note that everyone is different, and everyone heals differently. With microblading you will always have a template of the shape you want and have been given, so you’ll be able to colour your brows once it starts fading and, within seconds, still have the desired shape that you want. On the day of your procedure your brows will be designed using a cosmetic pencil, so you’ll be able to see your brow shape before any work starts; once the shape is agreed, the process will start. This stage usually lasts about an hour. The results can last between 9 months and 2 years, depending on the skin. ■

V

egan: a noun, which means getting asked at least 12 times a day where you get your protein. Having moved to Bath a couple of years ago, University of Bath student Megan Smith is making it her mission to find the best vegan hotspots in the city. It’s easy enough to simply google veggie places, but what about non-veggie places that offer great plant-based options? Sometimes it’s the latter that you want, rather than the specialised restaurants, because you want to be able to go out with your family and friends – some of whom may love meat – and all be able to order something to your liking. Here, we ask Megan to share 12 of her favourite vegan-friendly finds with us.

“This relatively new café is not to be underestimated. It features 100 per cent plant-based goodness, and the food is insane. My personal favourite is the taster plate, but the mac and cheese is also to die for. They even do a vegan hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows.”

MEET MEGAN

Megan really changed when she became a vegan, it’s like we’d never met herbivore

• She grew up in Llanelli, Wales, and came to Bath to study accounting and finance at university. • Her perception of veganism has always been rather negative; she grew up eating meat, loved chocolate, and loathed the thought of eating salad every day. • She became a vegan about a year ago after looking into the animal agriculture industry. To her surprise, plant-based eating made her feel better from the inside, she had more energy, her skin cleared up, she was actually enjoying the food, and it made her diet more interesting than it previously was. • She created her Instagram page,

@another_vegan_ lesbian, and her blog, www. anotherveganlesbian. wixsite.com/bath, to change people’s perceptions of what veganism looks like. • “Bath is one of the best places to be vegan or veggie,” she says. “There are plenty of restaurants and cafés which are fully plant based; even those which are not 100 per cent vegan often have a vegan option, which is great when I’m with non-vegan/veggie friends and family.”

One to watch Adam Luther runs Luthertraining, a very different sort of personal trainer set-up, where movement is very much in, and weight machines are very much out… How’s life, Adam? Really good, thank you. After years of planning Luthertraining and talking Luthertraining, I’m finally doing it! The business operates from my home in Box, and I like to think I specialise in not specialising. By this, I mean that I have a diverse approach to training. For over two decades, I have dabbled in all sorts of different activities and disciplines – calisthenics, gymnastics, kung fu, traditional weightlifting, yoga, jump rope, hand balancing, primal flow, Qigong, Thai chi and meditation – and I was hugely into surfing, snowboarding and skating, too. Sounds very varied… A session with me can be adjusted to suit the more competent athlete, who wants to learn how to achieve advanced jump rope tricks or a freestanding handstand pushup, or a complete beginner who wants to learn strength and mobility basics. My clients vary enormously in age and experience – at present, the youngest is 13 and the oldest 74. I train both men and women, often drawn to my approach after seeing my website, but they all want different things. Some want more energy, some want to work more on inner strength, and some on confidence and self belief. As a whole, though, they all want to feel stronger and more flexible. 84 I BATH LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

It sounds very different to the traditional gym session… Fortunately, movement is becoming more popular. People are starting to realise that being able to crawl, roll, swing, hang, jump, invert, rotate and so on is much more beneficial for your body and your mind than standing on a cross-trainer for an hour staring at a screen, or sitting on a bench watching yourself do bicep curls in the mirror. Minimal equipment is required. Realistically, how much effort should we put in? Two hours a week won’t get you much in return. I would recommend at least five, which – out of 168 – isn’t a huge amount. Anything is better than nothing, though, and the most important thing is to keep it varied, keep it interesting, keep it challenging, keep it fun – and keep it simple. ‘Simple’ does not mean easy, it means don’t over complicate things. We haven’t got time to follow long, detailed workout programmes full of sets and reps, or counting calories on every meal. But a few exercises

fitness done well, until you’re ready to progress, will relieve stress – not add to it! Is getting slim or muscular what we should really be aiming for? Unfortunately this seems to be the case, especially for youngsters. ‘Beautiful’ reality TV stars and enhanced social media selfies don’t help the situation, so the majority of male gym users try to get bigger while the women try to get smaller. Men will consume way more protein than they actually need, often using substances to enhance muscle growth. Women, on the other hand, will consume fewer calories than they need, often running on empty. Both sexes are predominantly focusing on how they look without giving a thought to how they feel. Their physical and mental health suffers enormously. So, what should we be doing? Bodyweight strength and agility – while looking after your spine, taking care of your joints, and eating real food most of the time – will result in an all-round healthy lifestyle for anyone. What do you say to people who genuinely don’t enjoy the gym? I say, ‘Me too!’ Lots of gyms lack natural light and are full of conditioned air, and can be rather intimidating for people who aren’t sure what they should be doing. And there are countless ways to be healthy without stepping foot in a gym – dancing, walking, boxing, climbing, trampolining – the list is endless. Just move and, if possible, do so while breathing in fresh air. Is coming for a session or two with you a week enough? I have someone who comes to me once every three weeks. He has no problem motivating himself, as he trains five days a week and has done for years. He wants

“Simple doesn‘t mean easy”

to take things up a level and learn some challenging new skills, such as ‘human flag’ and ‘strict ring muscle ups’. I teach him the progressions he needs to work on, and away he goes. At the same time, though, I also have a lady who sees me three times a week. She wants to make some serious lifestyle changes, and has made a deal with herself that she won’t be doing any retail therapy until she feels the way she used to before she stopped loving herself. She openly admits that she is not motivated at all, so she’s made herself accountable and, by her own choice, paid me in advance for three months of full-time training. My goal is to teach her everything I know and help her make it a lifestyle, so that moving every day becomes just part of who she is. First we make our habits, and then our habits make us. Tell us about the options. I charge £50 for one hour of one-to-one, £75 for two-to-one. Or you can pay £225 for five sessions one-to-one, and £350 two-to-one. I may look into doing group sessions at some stage, but my main focus is to teach people how to move with good technique – I can just about watch two people well, but not 10. If I do eventually do group sessions, it will be with existing clients who have already been taught by me. We’ve come along for a one-to-one, then. What will happen? I would first find out what you can and can’t do, and what you do and don’t enjoy. From here, I will tailor your sessions. My job is to teach you how to do a proper pull up, a proper push up and a proper squat. I know many people who have used gyms for years – or even had personal trainers – yet can’t do a pull up (or a modified version of) or a push up; some have never even done a squat! It is imperative that we can all pull, push, squat and lift our own weight. Depending on your abilities and goals, I will also teach you how to handstand, how to skip, how to box, how to use gymnastic rings, how to lift weights and – of course – how important it is to eat real food. Basically, I will teach you how to be a strong, confident, mindful mover – who will go on forever! For more, www.luthertraining.com www.mediaclash.co.uk I BATH LIFE I 85

Misha Badial, consultant ophthalmologist Tell us about a popular treatment?

We provide intravitreal injections (injections into the eye) for wet AMD (AMD stands for age-related macula degeneration and involves damage to the macula which affects central vision). This treatment is very popular as currently we have nearly 600,000 people in the UK with AMD. What results can patients expect?

These injections can halt central visual decline in nine out of 10 people and can help improve vision in three out of 10 people. Injections may not work if there is long-standing damage to the macula, so it is very important to present as early as possible from the onset of symptoms. You can be referred to us by your GP or your optician, or you can self-refer if you are concerned that you are developing symptoms of central visual decline. How many treatments are needed or is it a one-off treatment?

The injections are given regularly, initially given every month for three months, and then we individualise the treatment schedule depending on your eye and the progress you are making. For more: www.circlehealth.co.uk

Grand opening Chris Jones of GOODBODY talks about the launch of Bath’s first cannabis oil wellness centre, coming in late June

C

rispin Blunt MP is to be the guest of honour at the private launch of Bath’s first cannabis oil (CBD) wellness centre, which takes place on Friday, June 28. It’s fitting that Crispin, the MP for Reigate in Surrey, is guest of honour, as he is a long-time advocate of CBD. Then, a day later – on Saturday, June 29 – the Goodbody Wellness Centre at 7 Broad Street will open its doors to the public. “When it came to naming our stores, we chose ‘Goodbody’ because we believe CBD boosts the endo-cannabinoid system,” says Chris Jones. “This

works to restore homeostasis and balance, which is good for the body – hence, Goodbody. Jones says Goodbody will be opening two more stores by August – one in Cirencester and another in Clifton, Bristol. “All of the stock we sell has passed scientific laboratory testing to ensure that it sits within the legal guidelines,” he says, “and that it has the amount of CBD contained in the product as described.” Goodbody is offering customers some unique CDB experiences too, including CBD coffee and tea that can be tasted in-store. They’ll also be selling coffee beans containing the CBD additive, which can be enjoyed at home. There are many ways to take and apply CBD, and Goodbody will offer an extensive portfolio of products, including skincare, tinctures, balms, bath bombs, vape oils, body oils and capsules. And that’s not all. There are many other products in the development stage that will hit Goodbody stores before Christmas too. ■

C

hew Magna in spring is an especially good time of year for a visit, with an excellent chance of spotting ducklings, goslings and cygnets as well as the beautiful lake. The walk also explores a section of the River Chew, a 17-mile-long river that has its source in springs near Chewton Mendip. There is also the ascent of Knowle Hill, the slopes of which are awash with bluebells at this time of year. It maybe only 367 feet above sea level, but the panoramic outlook from this hilltop takes in Dundry Hill, the distant Wiltshire Downs, Chew Valley Lake and the Mendip Hills.

The Walk • Leave the car park, turn right in front of the Pelican Inn and take the first right into Tunbridge Road. In 400m, where the pavement ends, cross the road to a handgate opposite before walking up the left edge of a field to a gate in its top corner. Follow the path ahead – it soon bears left – and drop down to a lane. Turn right and, in a few paces, left onto an enclosed footpath. Beyond a gate, follow a farm track ahead past Roundhill Farm and down towards Pitt’s Farm. Pass to the right of Pitt’s Farm,

keeping to the right of a wooden fence, before walking up the left edge of a field. All the while, the verges and hedgerows are a riot of colour with springtime flora. • Partway up the field, pass through a gate on the left and follow an enclosed path through to the flanks of Knowle Hill. Walk ahead for 150m before turning left to follow a faint path uphill to a seat on the summit of Knowle Hill. Sit and relax and enjoy the views across Chew Lake. Follow a path behind the seat down to a lane, turn right and follow the lane around the flanks of Knowle Hill to reach Knowle House on the right in 350 yards. Continue following the lane ahead for 550m to a road junction, ignoring a left turn into Hollowbrook Lane and one other left turn along the way. Walk ahead – signposted to Bishop Sutton – to a junction in 20m. Turn right along a cul de sac and continue for 200m to a gate and stile. • Beyond the stile follow a path on the right, almost doubling back on yourself. Follow this path along to a footbridge on the left, cross this bridge and follow the path ahead, keeping as close as possible to Chew Lake, to reach a car park. Walk through the car park and continue www.mediaclash.co.uk I BATH LIFE I 91

Did you know?

Chew Valley Lake was constructed in the early 1950s and was opened by the Queen in 1956. The village of Moreton was submerged during its construction and, to this day, it is said that the sound of the village’s church bell tolling can be heard on moonlit nights. Eye witnesses have also claimed to have seen the weathercock on the church’s spire when the lake’s water level is low. The lake provides leisure activities, and not just for walkers and ornithologists. It is one of the country’s best stretches of water for fly fishing, with the size and condition of the trout caught here being second to none. The lake is also home to the Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club where five separate slipways can give access to the water for fleets of over 100 boats.

These riverside meadows make for an excellent pastoral landscape.
