EDITOR’S LETTER

ood evening, everyone – and welcome to the 2021 Bristol Life Awards. The Awards has always felt special, but tonight – the first time we’ve been able to host the event live since 2019 – feels especially auspicious. It’s odd to think how we used to take it all for granted: airily turning up to a 600-people-strong event, in our best finery, blinged and tuxed to the nines, to socialise, hug, air-kiss, high-five, what have you, without a second thought. Hedonistic partygoers that we were, we were more concerned with lock-ins than lockdowns. Then the unimaginable happened. Never mind attending big social gatherings; we could barely leave the house. Not a single business was unaffected, some far more devastatingly than others. Used to playing our own part in the success of the city, we adapted along with everyone else, taking our events – even these Awards – online. It wasn’t as easy for those working in hospitality, the arts and many other sectors, but they adapted too, drawing on true Bristol grit and creativity to – that dreaded word – ‘pivot’ to keep their businesses alive. Even more impressively, some Bristol businesses, including many here tonight, did far more than cover their own backs; they went out of their way to help those in an even more vulnerable situation. The charitable initiatives born out of lockdown continue to this day. All of which makes this year’s Bristol Life Awards more important than ever – and poignant, too. It’s a chance for everyone to celebrate not just the survival, but the successes, of their teams under the most challenging conditions. Tonight is the perfect excuse to kick back, say hello to people you may not have seen for a very long while, and to toast them with plenty of bubbly – but pace yourself, as nobody likes the table who makes it impossible to hear the words on the stage… Good luck to all finalists, big congratulations to the winners, and our very best wishes to everyone for the rest of the year and 2022. We’re no numerologists, but it looks a lucky year to us…

Her Edinburgh Fringe shows won her Best Performer in the Comedian’s Choice Awards – an award voted solely by other comedians – two years in a row. Described as a stand-up star by The Telegraph, Laura tackles modern topics and debates including feminism, technology, the environment and anxiety with a contrastingly bubbly and uplifting style. Alongside her stand-up career, Laura has authored a novel and writes regularly on her own popular blog. Her writing has also appeared in Glamour, and she has been featured in The Telegraph, The Times, The Scotsman, the Evening Standard and The Sunday Post. She has appeared on Live At The Apollo, a number of BBC panel shows, and Radio 4. e would like to reassure everyone that we are very mindful of our duty of care to all attendees, participants and those working at the Awards. We are following current government guidelines for delivering events very closely. Please read these points below. This advice is also on the Bristol Life Awards site and has been supplied to attendees. Many thanks, Bristol Life Awards team

HEALTH & SAFETY

There will be multiple hand sanitising stations throughout the venue. Please remember to regularly clean your hands throughout.

Facemasks generally: these are not obligatory but please feel free to wear one if you are more comfortable, and please respect those who choose to wear one.

Facemasks specifically: we recommend that you wear a facemask in areas such as the reception and in the toilets.

All event spaces including tables will be open to attendees throughout the evening from 6.30pm and we encourage guests to take seats as early as possible. To help facilitate that, please familiarise yourself with where your table is and also let your teams and guests know. The table plan will be emailed to attendees no later than 24 hours before the Awards.

All attendees will be asked to show proof of one of the following on arrival at the Awards: • Double vaccination via Covid Pass (NHS app) or vaccination card. • Negative test result taken in the last 24 hours (NHS app or text message confirmation). • If you are unable to provide either of these, you will be required to take a lateral flow test and entry will be permitted on sight of a negative result.

The venue has been fully risk assessed and attendee numbers have been limited to allow for a safe capacity.

All attendees are encouraged to take a lateral flow test within 24 hours of when you are due to arrive at the Awards, and register the result with HM Govt.

If you are experiencing Covid symptoms, or in the last two weeks have been in contact with anyone with Covid symptoms, we politely request that you don’t attend. You should get a PCR test and follow the UK Govt’s stay-at-home guidance.

Communal areas are being cleaned regularly during the evening, including the toilets. Bar and food preparation adheres to hospitality government guidelines.

We recommend that drinks orders can be made from your seat to reduce crowding at the bar.

Amy Coppock EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, COUTTS Having been in the finance industry for over 20 years, Amy has attained multiple qualifications during this time. She is also personally passionate about supporting the sustainability agenda and developing others.
