WEDDING STYLE, BLING & COOL STUFF TO LOVE & CHERISH

editor’s letter / Issue 172 / CITY SPECIAL 2017

Love, actually Yep, we’re in nuptials mode again – who doesn’t love a good wedding? But this time, rather than focus on a specific field or theme, we’ve gone for a bit of everything: great photographers, stylish bridal dresses, cool venues, a bit of essential bling, and more – something for all tastes and budgets, we reckon. So, if you’re a bride or groomto-be, turn to our wedding feature on page 20 for ideas and inspiration to make your big day go with a swing. Elsewhere, we take a look at The SHO gallery’s latest exhibition, Treading The Boards, a group show of movie-inspired art on recycled skateboard decks. How cool is that? We also asked local dude Christian ‘I Loves The ’Diff’ Amodeo to nip over to new gentleman’s barber, Goji – Pontcanna’s very own man cave – for a spot of pampering and a deluxe therapy shave; read his report on page 60. All that, plus editor’s choice goodies with a distinctly peachy flavour, Cheese Pantry’s Owen Davies, summer knitwear, six pages (count ‘em!) of Snapped! and other such goodies. Get the kettle on, and have a flick...

BOOKS/PHOTOGRAPHY

PICTURE PERFECT Hit detective series Hinterland is celebrated in a new photographic book Published by Graffeg, Hinterland: Ceredigion Landscapes is a collection of photographs, essays and snapshots from the making of the hit TV show, Hinterland/Y Gwyll, a noir police detective drama set in the west Wales county of Ceredigion. Written, filmed and broadcast in both Welsh and English, and screened on BBC and S4C, the show has become an international hit, and is now broadcast in more than 100 countries, attracting tourists to Ceredigion from all over the world. The book, available in Welsh and English, features stunning black and white images by acclaimed photographer David Wilson, as well as fascinating behind-the-scenes shots of filming, plus an erudite essay by Ceredigion novelist Cynan Jones, documenting his response to the rich landscapes of his home county. “This book captures the enigmatic spirit of the Hinterland/Y Gwyll series beautifully,” said Graffeg MD, Peter Gill. “The atmospheric black and white images conjure up a landscape where mysterious events can take place, as per the series.” Hinterland creators, Ed Thomas and Ed Talfan, will be talking about the new book at the Angel Hotel on Sunday 24 September, as part of Cardiff Book Festival. MUSIC

COMING SWN

Rhain

Swn Festival presents a new experiential music event, off // kilter Following the recent reveal of a new-look Swn for 2017, organisers have announced a partnership with the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama to bring a new event to Cardiff this autumn. With a quieter, more experimental feel, off // kilter will give ticket holders the chance to be a part of several, completely different musical experiences, in the impressive setting of the world-class RWCMD. Taking place on 7 October, artists will perform in different spaces throughout the college, encouraging the audience to move around to see them all – from the experimental, atmospheric sounds of Welsh electronic duo Cotton Wolf and haunting, otherworldly music of Rhain, to a theatrical performance by Ed Dowie, raw, folk-infused songs from Richard Dawson and the ambient, dark pop vibes of Vorhees, aka New York-based composer Dana Wachs. “For the first time, we’re bringing a group of artists you wouldn’t necessarily expect to find at the Royal Welsh College,” said promoter and Swn co-founder, John Rostron. “It’s a more off-kilter version of Swn, hence the name. We want people to go on a journey through electronics, sonics and voice with some remarkable talent in a beautiful building.” Tickets for off // kilter are on sale now for £20. Fitness instructor Jin Osborne has a real passion for sport

WELL-BEING

SPORTING CHANCE Penarth fitness instructor Jin Osborne fights against the odds to encourage women to enjoy the health benefits of sport Having survived a rare auto-immune disease, Jin Osborne from Penarth – who runs her own fitness class, JinFit – is hoping to inspire more women and girls around Wales to adopt a more active lifestyle. Jin, who suffers from granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) disease – a rare and serious condition that causes blood vessels to become inflamed, and can prove fatal if left untreated – attributes her success in fighting the disorder to her fitness and passion for sport. “It’s vital to stay physically active because your body depends on it,” she says. “I’m so lucky I was so fit and so healthy – it actually saved my life.” She is joining forces with Sport Wales on its ‘Our Squad’ campaign, aimed at celebrating the everyday women and girls who take up and encourage others to adopt a more active lifestyle, while enjoying associated health and social benefits along the way. “My aim is to inspire women to be better, healthier and happier versions of themselves,” said Jin. “I love seeing all the girls that come to my class – the way they give all their energy to it, encourage each other and laugh together makes me smile every morning. They motivate me to want to be better.” As Jin’s slogan says, “Act like a lady, train like a boss.” Now get to it!

DANCE

LEAPS AND BOUNDS Acclaimed hip-hop dance company, ZooNation, opens a new academy in Cardiff Based at National Dance Company Wales, at Wales Millennium Centre, the academy – which opens on 24 September – will offer weekly classes (every Sunday during termtime) for anyone aged 4-21, covering a wide range of hip-hop dance styles, including locking, popping and breaking, all taught in a fun, safe environment. Founded in 2002, with five-star hip-hop theatre shows in the West End under its belt, ZooNation is already well-established in London with two academies and close to 300 students, and Cardiff-born executive director Chantal Spiteri

hopes to emulate that success in her home city. “We want to provide the same training and opportunities that we offer to young people in London,” she said. “The genre of hip-hop has already had great success in South Wales and we want to help its growth and nurture future generations. In London, we’ve had students successfully place in our youth and professional companies, and even reach a level where they can come back and teach for us. I’d love to see that full circle development happening in Cardiff.” For more: zoonation.co.uk

A MAN’S WORLD

RHYS WILLIAMS

RUCKING GREAT! The big kick-off is approaching. Rhys is getting excited...

G

enerally, summer is all about the finer things in life: going on holiday or reflecting on a holiday recently enjoyed. Perhaps weekends away, attending weddings, fetes or fayres, going to gigs or concerts and just spending quality time with the family. For me, however, this time of year always means one thing – the start of the new rugby season. And exciting changes are afoot: the 2017-18 season will see a change to the Guinness PRO14 with two South African teams (Toyota Cheetahs and Southern Kings) entering the competition. Cardiff Blues welcome the Cheetahs to the iconic Arms Park on 18 February, while we face

Fancy a little jog up the Big Dipper at Merthyr Mawr? Didn’t think so...

both South African teams away from home in April. The season begins, though, with Edinburgh at home on 1 September. It promises to be a great occasion and we hope to see as many of you here as possible! But back to the preparation... Pre-season for professional rugby players is like Marmite – you either love it or hate it. I always enjoyed it, but it’s the most intense period of training you will ever go through. You would always set a shortterm goal, whether it was gaining weight, building strength or, for me, it was always about getting that extra little bit of speed and sharpness. You push yourself to the limit every day, striving to get better and better. I’m sure we’ve all experienced DOMS (delayed onset of muscle soreness) at some point, but for rugby players, it’s a prerequisite of this time

PRE-SEASON FOR PRO RUGBY PLAYERS IS LIKE MARMITE – YOU EITHER LOVE IT OR HATE IT of year. The day after a conditioning session will always make simple things like walking down the stairs and even getting up from the toilet [Thanks for that mental image – Ed] a challenge. Rugby and methods of training are continually evolving. In seasons gone by, pre-season was dominated by lots of aerobic and anaerobic running. We’d spend hours doing hill runs around Castell Coch, Pyle and Pontypridd. There would always be the dreaded visit to Merthyr Mawr and the ‘big dipper’, synonymous with all pre-seasoners and lots of repetitions on the running track. Modern-day pre-season is much more concentrated around building strength, power and your anaerobic capacity to match the demands of today’s professional game. I’ve popped down to the training ground on a number of occasions in recent weeks, and have seen the boys working extremely hard. Just watching them sometimes leaves you out of breath. Virtually the whole squad are back now, with just a handful left to return from their summer exploits – including a certain Sam Warburton, of course. We can’t wait for the big kick-off and really hope you will join us at Cardiff Arms Park. See you there! IN THE PICTURE

Forget those boring, rigid family poses and cheesy group shots of old – today’s contemporary wedding photographers are much more about unobtrusive, dynamic reportage, using their valuable skill and know-how to capture the heart and soul of a couple’s big day. Some of the region’s most sought-after shutterbugs are featured here, all of them wonderfully unique and exciting in their own way – the natural and relaxed approach of Simon Gough; swashbuckling snapper Tim Bishop, “epic and adventurous”; Jake Morley – modern, artistic and fun; “alternative” wedding photographer Owen Mathias, always bold and eyecatching; and Dafydd Bland (Eminent Photography), a wonderful “documentary storyteller”. Let’s raise a toast to them all!

Owned by Laurian Veaudor, the patisserie designs and makes the most delicate sweet treats and incredible wedding cakes – more like works of art than cakes – including croquembouche, bespoke chocolate showpieces and macaron displays (pictured), amongst other things. SISTER ACT

Although not your typical wedding videographers, sisters Elena and Sofia, co-founders of Cardiff-based Costa Sister Productions, are much in demand amongst the hipster set, and little wonder. Preferring alternative, non-traditional weddings – think beers, bikes and beards rather than starchy morning suits – they shoot in a fun, informal style, and their work has taken them across the globe to New York, California, Canada, Australia and all over Europe. They offer various ‘story’ packages, and at the end of it, you’ll have your very own bespoke Costa Sister movie. Cool, no? Selected from an open call, exhibiting artists – all from south and west Wales – include Jacqueline Alkema, Zena Blackwell (we adore her characterful Faces painting, pictured below), Glenn Carney, Michaela Davidova, Eluned Glyn, James Green, Lucia Jones, Ifan Lewis, Iwan ap Huw Morgan and others, with one of them set to be selected for a solo exhibition at Cardiff MADE next year. We know who our money’s on...

schewing traditional canvasses, the latest group exhibition at independent Cardiff gallery The SHO – in collaboration with Cardiff Skateboard Club – instead showcases movieinspired art on recycled skateboard decks, featuring work from over 35 local and national contributing artists. Properly gnarly it is, too. “The interest and enthusiasm we’ve had around the exhibition is pretty overwhelming,” says The SHO co-owner, Emily Michael. “We’ve been blown away by how many exceptionally talented artists are exhibiting with us. “The diverse collection varies from painted designs to highly-detailed laser-cut pieces by artists including Jon Horner, Ed Syder, Phil Hackett, Mark Gubb, Bruce Parker, and many others.” Sounds ‘flipping’ great – ‘wheel’ see you there... MUSIC MATTERS Rock legends, heavy metal icons, classical excursions and rap wannabes... it’s all about the music at Chapter this month By JA M I E R E E S

JACK AT 80 Chapter celebrates hellraising American actor, Jack Nicholson, in his 80th year Bringing together some of Nicholson’s most compelling performances from a 60-year career in the movies, the season includes some of his best-known, influential and most powerful films, including Easy Rider (3 & 9 September), Five Easy Pieces (10 & 12 September) and Chinatown (24 & 26 September). Showing at Chapter from 3-26 September – see chapter.org for more details

M

artin Scorsese once said that music and film are inseparable, and this year has seen movie music celebrated at the BBC Proms in London, with a concert dedicated to arguably the most prolific film composer of all time, John Williams, while the Welsh Proms also got in on the act this summer with their Night At The Movies concert, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Chapter is joining in, too, with a feast of musicrelated films, across various genres. First up on the big screen is David Gilmour: Live at Pompeii (cert TBC, 13 September). Almost 45 years after the rock legend filmed Pink Floyd: Live At Pompeii at the titular Roman amphitheatre, he returned there for two spectacular solo shows last year, in front of a 2,600-strong crowd, part of a 12-month tour in support of his chart-topping album, Rattle That Lock. Next up is Patti Cake$ (15, 22-28 September). Directed by Geremy Jasper, the film follows Patricia Dombrowski – aka Patti Cake$ – an aspiring and unorthodox rapper striving for glory.

Crackling with authenticity and infectious energy, and lauded by film critics, Jasper’s debut feature is an upbeat, coming-of-age crowd-pleaser, as Patti enlists faithful sidekick Jheri and mysterious gothmetal noisemaker Basterd to help her create tracks that even her army of haters can’t ignore. Audiences are also invited to join Black Sabbath at their final, monumental hometown gig in concert film documentary, The End Of The End (cert TBC, 28 September). The final word from the greatest heavy metal band of all time, the film chronicles the last days of their farewell tour, capturing the iconic band’s explosive Birmingham show earlier this year. And, in partnership with Chapter, the Welsh National Opera Orchestra presents Oz With Orchestra (U, 10 September, St David’s Hall). Playing live alongside a screening of the everpopular family favourite, The Wizard of Oz, the 65-strong orchestra – led by Welsh conductor, Grant Llewellyn – will play live to the original 1939 film, complete with Judy Garland’s original vocals. This lavish performance is a chance to hear Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Follow The Yellow Brick Road and other favourites in vivid orchestral technicolor – perfect for munchkins of all ages! HAPPY DAYS Celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary, TY LLANDAFF care home residents Reg and Beryl say the secret to a long and happy marriage is sharing "lovely holidays together"

T

he couple – Reg Williams, 94, and his wife Beryl, 91, who live together at Ty Llandaff, a private nursing, residential and respite care home in Pontcanna – met after World War II; Reg was an RAF flight officer during the war, while Beryl was a member of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (Wrens). After the war, the Cardiff-born pair got together at a party organised by Beryl’s cousin. They married soon after and have been practically inseparable ever since. When asked what the secret to a long marriage is, Reg replied: “To love one another, be contented, work together and share lovely holidays. We travelled the world together, going on cruises and so on.” Reg originally arrived at Ty Llandaff for shortterm respite care earlier this year before Beryl joined him for nursing care. He returned home but missed his beloved wife, so returned to the

care home in Conway Road – recently named in the Top 20 Recommended Care Homes in Wales – to become a permanent resident. Less than 1% of married couples live together in care homes in the UK. But there was no way this couple were ever going to live apart. “I was so impressed with Ty Llandaff when I first arrived, and I thought it would be great for Beryl to come and stay with me as she was beginning to need more care," said Reg. "I couldn’t be without her – we’ve been together for 70 years. “Everyone is friendly here and Beryl is getting all the care she needs. There is plenty to do. I enjoy attending local church services, Beryl and I have been taken out on day trips with carers, and we both enjoy the music entertainment the home regularly puts on. It’s great.” “Ty Llandaff was the best thing for us," added Beryl. "It's a marvellous place with lots of space,

excellent food and exceptional levels of care.” Said Ty Llandaff care home manager, Janice Evans: “We are delighted to have Reg and Beryl with us at Ty Llandaff. They are so lovely together and we absolutely adore them.”

T

he easiest way to pull off summer knitwear is a classic pullover, a staple of any wardrobe. There are so many colourful and stylish options out there, but Reiss is a good starting point – their range is always dependably chic, simple and elegant. If you still want to keep an element of summer edge to your outfit, go for ribbed knitwear. One of our faves is All Saints’ knitted Kait dress (see main pic) – sophisticated yet edgy, it’s a guaranteed head-turner, whether you choose to dress it up or down. And if you’re heading out for a big night on the town, don’t forget your jacket, even during these warmer months (that unpredictable Welsh summer!). Whether you go for a preppy cardigan à la Vivienne Westwood, or the chichi pastel cape cover-up from Winser London (available at John Lewis), you’ll be suitably wrapped up against the cold night-time air. GIRL ABOUT TOWN

ANDREA BYRNE News a nchor

WET, WET, WET Andrea’s summer adventures have had a distinctly watery theme

I

t’s summer. A time for barbecues, outdoor gatherings, open-air theatre and outward-bound pursuits... although someone clearly forgot to tell the weather. Just recently, I found myself in wellies and waterproofs, wading through fields of mud at a music festival on a farm. Safe to say, the whole thing was a little bit of a washout and we spent a large part of the weekend sheltering under canvas. But, in true hen party spirit, we managed to soldier on through the elements – face glitter becoming our worthy friend in battle – as we put up a half-decent fight against the elements. I refused to let the constant tease of sunshine and heavy showers keep me inside

for too long this summer, though. Having thrown myself into a stand-up paddleboard challenge a year ago (for the Duke of Edinburgh Award’s diamond anniversary), I’ve been indulging in a session or two of ‘SUP’ every now and then. And I decided this month that it was high time to officially confirm the sport as my hobby, by purchasing my very own inflatable board (yes, the phrase ‘all the gear, no idea’ springs to mind!). So, you may just see me paddling out in Cardiff Bay. Let’s hope the wind is on my side! On an equally active theme, I’ve also put my running shoes back on, after months of neglecting them in the back of the wardrobe. I’ve signed up for a halfmarathon in October – so the race is quite You can stand under my umbrella...

IN TRUE HEN PARTY SPIRIT, WE SOLDIERED ON THROUGH THE ELEMENTS literally on to get some miles in before the autumn. I’ve got a lot of work to do! As for the world of telly, well, much like our summer skies, my filming topics have been fairly dark of late. A new series of Crime Files is back in a couple of months, revealing the evidence detectives used to solve some of Wales’ worst cases. I’ve been speaking to the teams who cracked the mysteries and hearing the harrowing personal stories behind them. This series features a mystery body in a bag, a huge LSD drugs ring and a murder eventually proved by a printer in a library. Intrigued? Tune into ITV Cymru Wales in the autumn to find out more... Finally, a bit of glamour to end with. Our old friend the sun did bless us with its presence, to celebrate one big date in the summer diary. We got our gladrags on to toast Ospreys’ Andrew Bishop marrying his sweetheart, Rhia. After a romantic church ceremony, Hensol Castle in the Vale of Glamorgan provided a glorious setting for the reception. And a somewhat lively rugby reunion followed, as [husband] Lee caught up with the likes of James Hook, Mike Phillips, Alun Wyn Jones, Paul James, Jonathan Thomas, David Bishop and Aled Brew. Many congratulations to the newlyweds, and thanks for a wonderful day!

TRY 5... KITCHENS Seeking inspiration for your new kitchen? Look no further than these handsome examples from five of our go-to local kitchen designers... 1. CLASSIC & MODERN KITCHENS Every kitchen should be unique and designed around your individual needs, and tailor-made to how you cook and live, say Caerphillybased kitchen designers, Classic & Modern. Using the latest CAD design packages, they will illustrate, supply and install your dream kitchen – we particularly like the sleek Häcker one (pictured above). “Functional with a flourish,” as they say, promising a space that “makes your life better.” Amen to that.

2. CHALKHOUSE INTERIORS Fashions come and go, but a timeless, handmade Shaker kitchen will always look stunning. With simple lines and clever design, it can be whatever you want – contemporary, Scandi, country or coastal – and works just as well in a modern setting as it does in a period home. Best of all, it can be repainted when you fancy a bit of a change, to give you a completely new look. In other words, a kitchen for life.

3. SMC KITCHENS From their showroom in Pontyclun, SMC supply all manner of top-notch German kitchens, including the Nobilia Structura, a Sherwood oak reproduction that’s part of their colour concept collection. As well as hob units with an orderly drawer system, and integrated open wall shelves with LED lighting, the fetching sage accent adds a welcome burst of freshness.

4. WREN KITCHENS For a modern look and enduring style, the everpopular Shaker kitchen from Wren’s Infinity Plus collection is a no-brainer. The colour combo of clean Winter White with a dramatic Tornado Grey worktop is beautiful and functional, with special feature units to reflect your lifestyle. There are dozens of extra options available, too, from classic dressers to cooks’ tables and even – get this – built-in pet beds.

H E A LT H & BEAUTY

GOOD to GOJI! A luxurious massage, deluxe therapy shave and a sharp haircut at Goji gentleman’s barbers – Pontcanna’s new ‘man cave’ By C H R I ST I A N A MODEO

L

ucky me, sent by Cardiff Life to visit relocated Goji in buzzy Pontcanna for a bit of ‘me time’. Not that I need ‘me time’, really, so I’m grateful to use my visit to find out a little more about the salon that, since moving over to 175 Kings Road in mid-July, now also offers beauty treatments, massage and a multitudinous menu of men’s grooming delights. Within five minutes, I’m enjoying a 30-minute men’s Swedish back, neck and shoulder massage. I feel more relaxed than I have done in years, and find myself drifting off to a place far away from the bustle of Pontcanna, as the hands (and forearms and elbows) of beauty therapist Tracy Morgan work their magic. At £28, I had to doublecheck the price because for a session of this calibre it seems exceedingly good value. The experience is top notch. Speaking of notches, afterwards, whilst I’m still somewhere in la-la-land, Tracy explains those in my back that she targeted (and how lopsided I am), and that she had gone fairly easy on me. I suspected as much, and am grateful (being a wimp), but it’s good to know that she is equally capable of a full-on sports massage. Whilst still on cloud nine, I drift back through the sanctuary-like salon, all dark tones and on-trend copper. Goji’s new home is a larger unit (it used to be bar/restaurant Zanzibar), allowing it to offer the beauty and men’s grooming that managing director Vicky Griffin and creative director Greg James had always wanted to offer when they started up in business together in 2015, but previously didn’t have the room. The original salon was around the corner on Pontcanna Mews, home also to Canna Deli and women’s boutique, Kiti. It may have been out of sight, tucked behind the Co-op, but that didn’t stop Goji from building up a legion of loyal customers, as is evident when I visit – “word of mouth” popularity, says Vicky. With the extra space in the new place, Vicky and Greg are applying the same quality to their beauty and men’s offerings. Much is

60 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

made of the organic products they use, such as the vegan beard balms, oils and waxes from Swansea’s Manmane, and the Lulu and Boo organic Welsh skincare range, which, I’m delighted to discover is based just down the road in Fairwater. Talk about keeping it local. “Just because something claims to be organic on the label doesn’t necessarily mean it’s truly organic, or that it’ll translate into a great product,” says Vicky. “We’re really picky with what we use here.”

I drift upstairs to Goji’s gentleman’s barbers. The stairs, by the way, are by the front door, allowing men to go right on up rather than enter the main salon. They take walk-ins too, though booking is advisable. And Sundays is Goji Junior day, though when I visit on a Friday, a little chap is being quite demanding of barber Gemma Williams with regards to his preferred hairstyle (although he and his mum leave happy). There’s a good view from this first floor, which Goji describes as “your very own man cave in the heart of Pontcanna”, with the salon overlooking the little junction – great

for a spot of people-watching. The dark wood continues in this uncluttered yet comfortable space, made all the more inviting by cold beverages, including beer in the fridge by the small sofa. Meanwhile, the light shades made from bowler hats and a row of vintage cinema chairs are all eminently Instagrammable. I don’t have much of a beard to groom, so I choose to receive the deluxe therapy shave (£30). This comprises skin exfoliation and multiple hot towels, followed by a classic cutthroat shave and the application of skin oils, then a relaxing head massage, carried out by Gemma – another rare, unhurried treat. Both Gemma and part-time barber Alex are ‘scissor cutters’ – by which I mean properly trained barbers. And they ‘siarad Cymraeg’, which “goes down very well locally”, says Vicky. Gemma’s English is also perfect, and I enjoy our chat – she’s just moved here from Swansea, and loves it. I arrange for friend and man-about-town, John Pereira, to have a trim, too, since he has a big night out planned and wants to look sharp. He’s a Pontcanna local these days, so I was pleased to be able to introduce him to his new barber. “That wasn’t just a haircut, it was an experience,” he enthuses afterwards. “The care given and attention to detail were second-tonone. I was made to feel welcome, the stylist gave me confidence, and I’m very happy with the cut.” Revealing more of John seems an unlikely way to improve his looks, in my view, but I admit the cut and finish (£20) is an improvement – fashionable and dynamic without being too ‘look at me’. With its move to Kings Road, Goji, by contrast, is now very much ‘look at me’, and by rights it should be onto a winner, primed as it now is to fully meet the hair and beauty demands of its well-to-do local demographic from Pontcanna and across the city. I fully intend to return, too. CL

Meet the private healthcare expert Find out more about the consultants, medical directors and surgeons who could be responsible for your future well-being...

Dr Bryan Beattie

MD FRCOG NHS Consultant & Medical Director of Innermost Healthcare www.innermosthealthcare.com What does your job entail? Since I took up my first consultant post in Cardiff in 1995, I have been a full-time NHS consultant and the Lead Consultant for fetal medicine in Wales. I started the first Early Pregnancy Unit at the University of Wales and have been a Welsh Government advisor on many maternity and pregnancy-related issues, including the recent stillbirth initiative. Our fetal medicine team provides care for complex pregnancies, where there are concerns about the development or welfare of unborn babies, including various ultrasound-guided interventions such as fetal blood transfusions, and either draining or using miniature shunts to relieve potentially lifethreatening blockages in sick foetuses. What services do you offer for pregnant women at your practice? We offer a range of high-tech tests and scans, many of which are not yet available on the NHS, such as non-invasive prenatal testing for various

chromosomal conditions. It’s based on a simple blood test, which reduces the need for amniocentesis and the risk of miscarriage for it. We also offer screening for Group B Strep (which can cause life-threatening infections in newborn babies), specialist cardiac scans (as current scans miss 50% of babies with heart defects) and routine scans in late pregnancy, which are more accurate than conventional measuring and feeling the bump – these tend to miss around 50% of babies who are not growing properly and a third who are breech. What tests do you offer for non-pregnant women? We offer screening for ovarian cancer which usually presents late and is often called the ‘silent killer’. It’s based on a yearly scan and blood test, and a 30-gene saliva test to screen for genetic mutations like the BRCA (Angelina Jolie) ones. These significantly increase the risk of certain cancers – such as breast, ovarian and bowel cancer – so patients can take preventative measures to reduce their risk of getting cancer. What is your Innermost Learning charity? This charity provides free educational symposiums for healthcare professionals like midwives and doctors, clinic attachments for students and trainees, and also supports women’s healthcare research into safer prenatal testing and improving women’s health.

Iqroop Chopra

Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon, Nuffield Health, Cardiff & Vale Hospitals www.nuffieldhealth.com/ hospitals/cardiff-and-vale What is your clinical role? I am a Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon, practicing at the Nuffield Health Hospitals in Cardiff Bay and the Vale, at Hensol. My NHS base is at the University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough, where I have the pleasure of being the Clinical Lead for spinal services. Why did you choose this profession? As a child, I was always fascinated with the workings of the nervous system. Whilst at medical school, two of my close friends were left disabled from brain and spinal injuries after a motorbike accident. This inspired me to train as a neurosurgeon. What is it that makes your practice unique? Being able to perform a combination of orthopaedic and neurosurgical spinal procedures as a result of my unique training and fellowship. What’s the best bit about your job? The satisfaction of being able to improve my patients’ lives and living up to the trust they place in my hands. What is the most preconceived perception about what you offer? A sizeable number of people I treat do not require surgical intervention. Most spinal conditions can be treated by non-operative intervention.

AMANDA O’LEARY

Medical Director Centre for Reproduction & Gynaecology Wales (CRGW) 01443 443999 / 01174 409999 www.crgw.com Why do people have trouble getting pregnant? Around one in 6 couples will encounter problems getting pregnant, after two years of trying. Some women can encounter infertility even after having a child previously. Single people and same sex couples also desiring children will have causes of the reasons why they cannot have a baby. What are the main reasons why some people are unable to have babies? A third of infertility is attributed to women, a third to men, and a third is a combination of the two, or is ‘unexplained infertility’. Reasons for people unable to have babies include hormonal problems, the inability to release an egg, too few or no sperm, a blockage preventing egg and sperm meeting and female age, to name but a few. What can be done to help people get pregnant? Sometimes a simple medical solution such as some simple medication will enable a pregnancy to result. Some people will need a surgical solution for their infertility while others will need assisted conception with treatments such as intrauterine insemination (IUI), IVF and ‘ICSI’ where we can inject sperm into eggs when men have sperm problems. Some people may need donor sperm or donor

64 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

What should people do who are unable to get pregnant? Individuals and couples should see their GP, to see what tests and treatments can be offered on the NHS. For those individuals who require private investigations or treatments, we offer all of these services at CRGW. What makes CRGW unique? CRGW was set up entirely for people unable to have a baby. We have standalone clinics in Cardiff and Bristol, where patients are seen in a friendly, relaxing, purpose-built environment. We strive to offer costeffective, state of the art solutions to infertility, with a caring team able to support patients through what is often a stressful time, while enabling them to have unrivalled access to their team at a time when they need it most. How can couples find out more, or ask questions? We hold regular open evenings where we talk about cause of infertility and treatments, and where you can chat to members of the team one on one. We also have an ‘ask an expert’ button on our website where your questions can be asked electronically and our expert panel responds. Some people prefer to book a consultation with us, where we can begin to investigate and treat their inability to have a baby. How do we contact you or arrange an appointment? Via our website or by calling the clinic direct. If you want an appointment, you don’t need a GP referral. One of the friendly team at CRGW will be able to answer questions or book an appointment for you.

David Pemberton

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Nuffield Health, Cardiff & Vale Hospitals www.nuffieldhealth.com/ hospitals/cardiff-and-vale What is your role? As well as being a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, offering private one-to-one consultations and surgical treatment, I am also Medical Director for Nuffield Health Cardiff & Vale Hospitals. Why did you choose this profession? I was always interested in life sciences, engineering, mechanics and sport. Being mainly ligament, tendon, bone and joint surgery, orthopaedics encompasses the lot. What is it that makes your hospital unique? We have the best and most experienced surgeons in the country. With 23 years at consultant level, I’m now amongst the most senior knee surgeons in Wales. Through outstanding teamwork, we advise our patients before and after surgery, to get them back on their feet as quickly as possible, and enable them to enjoy their lives, doing what they like best. MR Charlie Chan

Consultant Breast Surgeon, St Joseph’s Hospital, Newport 01633 820 386 www.stjosephshospital.co.uk

You work at the BreastCare Centre at St Joseph’s – what makes the centre stand out? I am really impressed by the fantastic facilities and great team. Whilst most private hospitals perform mammograms and breast ultrasound, few can offer breast MRI and the latest 3-D mammogram (tomosynthesis). The BreastCare Centre has some of the best diagnostic equipment available anywhere in the UK. Why do you love your job? It is a huge privilege to find that people feel comfortable in entrusting their health and future to our clinic at St Joseph’s. Every day, I am humbled by how people react to news, both good and bad. Why did you want to become a surgeon? I decided at the age of 12 that I wanted to be a surgeon. And my mother had cancer when I was 13. Later, she asked if I would look after patients with cancer; number one son always does what she asks! What has changed in breast cancer treatment? In short, almost everything. We now understand that each cancer is unique. Surgery is tailored to each woman, and decisions about chemotherapy are often made after DNA analysis of the individual tumour. A new era

of personalised medicine is refining treatment to obtain the best outcome for each patient. Surgery is your day job – tell us a little something about your personal life... Although surgery keeps me busy, I keep the candle burning at both ends. At night, I photograph rock and jazz bands. I often go on the tour bus with Wilko Johnson and several artists have my photographs in their homes.

FOOD & DRINK

OWEN DAVIES

CHEESE, PLEASE! Need to know how to store and serve cheese, and what to eat it with? OWEN DAVIES, from Cardiff’s award-winning Cheese Pantry, is your man

C

heese is not a simple food; it comes in all forms and age profiles, in all shapes, sizes and colours. Each day is a vintage in cheese making, which makes it so interesting, but sometimes a nightmare to know where to start. So, here’s a short guide on storing cheese at home, how to serve it, and what to have with it...

HOW TO STORE CHEESE...

In an ideal world, we’d all have cheese cellars where the temperature and humidity were naturally controlled, but for most of us the fridge is our next best option. My advice would be to store your cheese in the veg compartment – it’s slightly warmer than the rest of your fridge. Keep cheese wrapped in its original Variety is the key to a good cheese board, says Owen

packaging, cheese wax paper (supplied by Cheese Pantry!) or wrapped in cling film. Wax paper allows the cheese to breathe whilst protecting it. If wrapping in cling film, try to eat it as soon as possible – plastic doesn’t allow the cheese to breathe and can cause it to sweat. And remember to store away from raw meats and strong-smelling foods, which may taint the flavour.

HOW TO SERVE...

Cheese should never be served straight from the fridge; it’s a real shame not to allow great cheese to reveal its true flavour and texture. If in doubt, the golden rule is to take it out of the fridge at least an hour before you want to eat it. It’s better to err on the side of serving cheese too warm than too cold, although fresh cheeses are usually better served a little cooler. To stop cheese from drying out, cover it with a damp tea towel, which also helps to keep the cheese fresh.

BUILD THE PERFECT CHEESE BOARD...

There are so many options here, but you should go for quality over quantity. I’ve eaten at some great restaurants where the cheese board comprises of just one signature cheese and it’s been amazing! I also love variety, and would rather have smaller portions of a wider selection. James Sommerin in Penarth loves cheese, and buys up to 25 varieties from us weekly to ensure he has a cheese board that appeals to all. To serve a balanced, varied selection, I’d recommend a soft cheese, a well-rounded blue and an interesting mature hard cheese, supplemented with a washed-rind cheese or a goats’ or ewes’ one. Or maybe even single types of cheese – try a variety of different blue ones, for example; regions (such as an all-Welsh board); or shapes and colours – visually, you want the board to look interesting, so be as creative as you like. And why not serve the board at the beginning of the meal? The key is not to select anything too heavy or offer too much cheese, otherwise your guests may not want to eat the main meal you’ve been slaving over. Cheese not only has the ability to waken

those taste buds, but it’s also a brilliant icebreaker at dinner parties.

CAN I EAT THE RIND?

In the main, if you’re buying cheese from a good cheese counter – *ahem!* – the rind will be natural. There are active microbial rinds, for example, from the white mould you see on a Camembert to natural coverings such as charcoal that you see often on soft goats’ cheeses. Such rinds not only form a natural protection, but also play a crucial part in the development of the cheese.

ACCOMPANIMENTS

These can add another dimension to a cheese board. At Cheese Pantry, we buy our preserves locally from Penylan Preserves; they’re super-delicious, with flavours that work well with cheese – fig, damson, blood orange marmalade (a must-try with your favourite blue!). As a rule, going sweet with cheese works really well, as it tends to balance out the cheese’s saltiness. Fresh, seasonal fruit is also good; so, apples and farmhouse cheddar; pears and figs with soft blue cheese; apricots, peaches, plums and nectarines with fresh cheeses; and grapes with soft and washed-rind cheeses.

IT’S A CRACKER!

The key is to keep crackers simple. James Sommerin makes his own, but Peter’s Yard has an amazing range of Swedish-style crispbreads which work so well with cheese – try their charcoal biscuit with a soft gooey brie or goats’ cheese. For wacky ideas on cheese board pairings, I discovered an amazing book: The Art Of The Cheese Plate by Tia Keenan (pictured above). It explores all sorts of weird and wonderful cheese pairings including seaweed, coffee, hazelnut crisps and fried onion strings. If you need more pointers, come visit us at Cheese Pantry – we’ll be happy to chat cheese until the cows come home!

go west Penzance makes the ideal base for exploring the western part of Cornwall – that’s if you can drag yourselves out of the comfy sofas at Artist Residence By DERI ROBINS

G R E AT ESCAPES

D

(Clockwise from top left) Short of jumping in the sea, you can’t get further west on the UK mainland than this; luxurious rooms and impeccable smokehouse fare at Artist Residence; the Admiral Benbow – flying the flag for pirates for 400 years

FACT FILE

on’t let the name bother you. You don’t need to know your Picassos from your Pollocks to stay at the Artist Residence. You’re not obliged to doodle a masterpiece on the napkin. There will be no humiliating quiz at checkout. Nonetheless, those of a creative spirit will love this place. Tucked away in the historic quarter of Penzance, in a tall Georgian house with narrow stairs, this is the kind of retreat that the phrase ‘boutique hotel’ was coined for, and makes the ideal base for discovering the ancient Cornish town. You won’t find many pirates left in Penzance, contrary to expectations raised by the Jolly Roger fluttering from the 17th-century Admiral Benbow directly opposite. This inn was the fictional home of Jim Hawkins in Treasure Island, but spare the staff your best Long John Silver impression; they’ll have heard it before. Sleeping quarters at the Residence are decorated in quirky, coastal style. Slate and bleached wood abound. Tea chests serve as tables; raw planks for shelves. Roberts radios are plugged in, and tuned to Radio 3 for your tasteful listening pleasure. Downstairs, The Cornish Barn smokehouse is usually packed with residents and locals alike, attracted by the superior BBQ-style cooking and the big lit-up signs. We snaffled a bowl of maple and chilliroasted nuts and fennel salt pork scratchings before getting stuck into parsnip rösti with caramelised onion and goat’s cheese, and chicken wings with apricot and soy, served by the kind of friendly, attractive staff that Cornwall does so well. Excellent breakfasts are served here, too; alternatively, you can have a hamper stuffed with Danish pastries delivered to your room. This is the sort of place where you want the weather report to say, ‘Deep frontal system moving in, ahead of an even deeper depression. The Met Office advises the public to make no unnecessary journeys’. Even if your day has been planned around as little activity as possible, at some point you’ll want to get out and explore. The Residence lies on Chapel Street, which runs from the centre of town down to the harbour; this is Penzance’s former main

street, and along this thoroughfare have marched (or crept) smugglers, soldiers, sailors, pilgrims, and – yes! – pirates. The now defunct Georgian theatre on the street is said to be where the first public announcement of Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar took place. Elsewhere in town are art galleries, booksellers and the usual sprinkling of antique and charity shops – reputed to contain rich pickings for bling and bric-a-brac aficionados. Admittedly, the delights of Penzance itself are limited, but this narrow end of the peninsula is the perfect jumping-off point for all the starry beaches and historic little fishing towns so beloved by the guide books. Ease yourself in with a walk along nearby Mount’s Bay, overlooking the fairytale pile of St Michael’s Mount, then head west, taking in the adorable fishing port in Mousehole en route. Remember to call it ‘Muzzle’, or the locals will laugh at you. Eventually, you’ll hit Land’s End. It’s one of those places you have to tick off your list, bucket or otherwise; a modest enough headland, with some kind of holiday complex thing which you’ll probably want to body-swerve. But it’s still impressive enough, topographically; paths wend their way above cliffs carved out by the waves of the mighty Atlantic Ocean, while seabirds, basking sharks, seals and dolphins regularly put in an appearance. You also need to stick Porthcurno on the list. A sheltered sandy cove, the waters here are among the warmest waters in these islands, thanks to the Gulf Stream, and somehow manage to look as turquoise as the Caribbean on even the greyest of days. If sunbathing is off the cards, the coastal path winds round the cove, with great viewing points to watch out for passing cetaceans. It also passes by the Minack, Cornwall’s extraordinary open-air amphitheatre, constructed above a gully with a rocky granite outcrop jutting into the sea. The cast will perform in any weather, so don’t expect your money back if it rains. Still not persuaded? An Artist Residence is due to open in Bristol – a bit closer to Cardiff, at least – next year, with a similarly boutiquey offering; though admittedly, opportunities for dolphin-spotting on Harbourside are comparatively limited.

In a nutshell Artist Residence combines eclectic luxury with a homely, intimate ambience. At present, there are three quirky, design-led outposts in Penzance, Brighton and London Staying over... what are the options? 17 individually decorated bedrooms, two apartments (each with two bedrooms), one cottage that sleeps up to six guests. What does it cost? From £90 B&B for hotel rooms; from £250 B&B in The Cottage (based on four guests sharing) Anything else? Like the other Artist Residence properties, the artwork is a big focus of the Penzance hotel, and has been handpicked by owners Justin and Charlotte from an eclectic mix of local artists and galleries. Notable artwork includes prints by Tracey Emin and Peter Blake. Artist Residence, 20 Chapel Street, Penzance TR18 4AW; Tel: 01736 365664, artistresidencecornwall.co.uk

The secret pension fund information Millions of people have their hard-earned savings salted away in funds, more often than not managed by Pension Fund Management Companies on their behalf – how is this arrangement working?

T

he first thing to say on this subject is that the rate of growth any individual gets on their pension fund will be a huge determinant of the eventual amount that individual will have to enjoy and spend in retirement (or leave to their beneficiaries, of course). The higher the growth rate, the more the amount that is eventually accumulated. This higher growth factor compounds, so the effect of achieving 7% per year over a few years or decades starts to really pile up versus, say, 4% per year. You may be very surprised by how big an effect this compounding factor has over time. For many people, it can make tens of thousands of pounds’ worth of difference – in some cases, even hundreds of thousands. So the simple answer is – go for growth, get the highest possible growth you can, and you will feather your retirement nest like you cannot believe. It is, however, not that simple! The reason is down to the risk that striving for higher growth entails, and going for it means taking higher risks. And if those risks manifest, losses tend to occur – possibly very high losses, too. Losses are disastrous for long-term gains. Let us take, as an example, someone who has built up £100,000 in their pension funds and is investing for high growth. Suddenly things go wrong, markets turn and they lose 50% of their savings. Can’t happen, won’t happen? Don’t believe it. It’s probably more likely than you might imagine. In that example, the £100,000 falls back to £50,000. From that new point, the recovery position is very odd. To recover the investment back to £100,000, the pension investor now needs to get 100% growth to return to that original £100,000 value. This is why losses are game-changers, especially large and sudden losses. These can be avoided altogether by avoiding all risk, and investing your money into no-risk areas. But this then means no real growth, and we know you need growth to maximise your retirement pot. So how do we deal with this conundrum? By investing wisely, and by striving not for out and out growth at any cost, but for steady growth built on a carefully risk-constructed methodology. There is no magical way of doing this. However, you can alter the odds and the

balance in your favour. This is where we go back to pension fund management. Some pension funds are managed with limited regard for risk control and can do very well for long periods of time. This is, in a way, a mirage, where lucky fund managers (or ones who take unreasonable risks) can look very good for many years or for periods of time. They will be riding a wave of general market positivity. But how do you spot whether a manager is good or bad, steady and reliable, or is – heaven forbid – gambling with your retirement pot? By looking underneath the bonnet of your pensions funds. This is the secret information, the other information that goes beyond ‘past performance’. These are factors known as ‘metrics’, crucial figures and numbers which give valuable clues as to how a fund achieves its performance. If you know these metrics, you can begin to decipher how a fund is really performing and see how it is positioned, in terms of management style and risk-taking. Know this and you may well spot warning signals

in advance of something going wrong, and unnecessary losses being occurred. We have published research which goes into this in far more depth, helping you to see these metrics. And, our research also lists those fund management groups with strong metrics and those who have weak metrics: the ’good’ and the ‘bad’. We have made this research available for free to readers of Cardiff Life – you can download it here: https://www.penguinwealth. com/guides/pension-fund-research-2017-notjudge-book-cover/.

The award-winning Ysgol Bae Baglan School in Port Talbot, designed by Cardiff architects Stride Treglown

QUOTE OF THE ISSUE

THE BIG STORY

GLITTERING PRIZE Gold Medal for Architecture awarded to designers behind Welsh ‘super school’ The Cardiff architects behind a new £40 million ‘super school’ in Port Talbot have won the prestigious Gold Medal for Architecture at the National Eisteddfod of Wales, supported by the Design Commission for Wales and awarded in association with the Royal Society of Architects in Wales (RSAW). Stride Treglown, which has offices across the country (including the one in Cardiff ), designed Ysgol Bae Baglan to bring together the former Cwrt Sart, Glanafan and Sandfields comprehensive schools with Traethemelyn Primary School and provide a new ‘all-through’ school for pupils aged 3-16. The school has three teaching wings that directly link to a large central space. There are also two independent learning pods to allow for an increase in pupil numbers and future expansion, and both learning and social spaces have been designed to promote education with an affirmative effect on

behaviour, attitude and well-being. The school is also open to the community after-hours, and is used for cultural, social and sporting events. Selector and architect, Gwyn Lloyd Jones (from Studio Egret West), said of the winning design: “Ysgol Bae Baglan combines a high aspiration of uniting a local community with a dynamic architecture statement. Situated on a flat site, the roof form replicates the surrounding hills and makes the building approachable and welcoming. The classrooms are spacious with abundant natural light, while the long school corridor has a curved and playful shape. “It is hoped that the school will become a focal point for the long-term development of the area, helping to bring the community together.” For more: stridetreglown.com

BIZ WISDOM BALANCING ACT How’s your work/life balance looking, asks ANDREA CALLANAN, voice expert and founder of inspireMe The Creative Quarter is home to a burgeoning creative community

BUSINESS PROPERTY

CHANGE OF SCENE MARK SUTTON, partner at property consultants Knight Frank, looks at the latest plans for Cardiff’s design-led community hub, the Creative Quarter, where a new owner has revealed plans for further investment

A

lready home to a rapidly growing community of occupiers, ranging from designers and filmmakers to snowsports specialists and neuroscientists, the Creative Quarter is the most dynamic and vibrant office scheme in Cardiff, providing individual studios at the old Morgan Arcade Chambers and the David Morgan department store. A recent string of new lettings puts it right at the heart of Cardiff’s flourishing creative community. The latest arrivals include artificial intelligence firm Cloud IQ and HLM Architects, along with

recent expansions from existing tenants Rogue Resolutions, Sorbet HQ and Bad Wolf Productions. With Morgan Arcade, Royal Arcade and the Creative Quarter itself recently acquired by LaSalle Investment Management, the available space is attracting plenty of interest. Currently approaching full occupancy, attention is already turning to the Creative Quarter’s next phase, the eagerly awaited refurbishment of an area which was originally the home of Cardiff’s first public library, set to keep the designers busy and provide opportunities for a range of new occupiers. One of the most frequent questions I get asked about is work/life balance. Certainly, during start-up phase, it’s reasonable to expect to work long hours. I’ve rarely met entrepreneurs who have a good work/life balance with a new business venture. Often, the reason we choose the entrepreneurial path is for freedom. For me, time freedom is a huge driver. Financial freedom generally provides time freedom, of course, but so do your choices. I know many lifestyle entrepreneurs who have a lovely lifestyle and plenty of time freedom because they don’t really care about growth or profit margin – they just want a business that serves their purposes. A stiff upper lip is required to run a successful organisation, but for optimal work/life balance, you need to decide what your priorities are. Check out Simon Sinek’s TED talks on ‘Start With Why’ – this will help define what’s important to you. Be aware of what you need for your health, relationships, financial wealth, self-care and anything else you feel is meaningful, then prioritise accordingly and ask for support when you need it. And check out movements such as Thrive Global, apps like Headspace, and electronic devices that monitor our nutrition, steps and sleep, pointing us towards more mindful, balanced living. inspireMe are a Cardiff-based engagement and selfdevelopment company that offer UK-wide team-building and training. OPINION

MIND THE GAP As the debate over the BBC’s gender pay gap rumbles on, JAMES WATKINS from Slater and Gordon Lawyers in Cardiff looks at the wider picture

T

he BBC recently published the salaries of its highest-paid stars, revealing the full extent of the gender pay gap within the corporation. No women featured in the top seven on the list, and there were only two women included in the top 14 (Claudia Winkleman and Wales’ very own Alex Jones). Chris Evans, the BBC’s top-earning man, received £2.2 million last year – more than four times the salary of the highest-paid woman, Claudia Winkleman, who received between £450,000 and £499,999. Of the 96 people named on the list, 62 were men, with the top five men earning £6.1 million, compared to the £1.8 million earned by the top five women. Of course, there will be those who say that we can’t be expected to feel sorry for the BBC’s female stars, given the amounts they get paid. But if it’s happening to the highest-paid workers at the BBC, it’s almost definitely happening in lower-paid jobs, too – make no mistake, the gender pay gap is real. So has the BBC actually broken the law in relation to its stars’ pay? Well, having a gender pay gap isn’t quite the same as falling foul of the law on equal pay. Equal pay claims involve a comparison of one job with another, to see if there are differences in pay in situations where a woman and a man are carrying out equal work of equal value. But that’s not to say there wouldn’t be a potential claim where, say, female actors, presenters and talent show judges are treated less favourably on grounds of their sex, or where female co-presenters are paid less than their male counterparts for doing the same work. There have already been reports of tension on the BBC Breakfast sofa, as Dan Walker’s pay was revealed to be up to £250,000, while co-hosts Louise Minchin and Sally Nugent didn’t even make the list of those earning more than £150,000. The Director General of the BBC, Tony Hall, has pledged to close the gap by

2020, but the task is not an easy one and a number of the BBC’s high-profile female employees have already been demanding answers. As an employment lawyer who acts exclusively for individuals, I speak to lots of people who claim to be the victims of discrimination. Sometimes the discrimination is obvious, but at other times it can be more subtle or hidden. I, for one, welcome the increased transparency that gender pay gap reporting provides; hopefully, it will prompt employers to start looking at the reasons why things are as they are, and to provide redress. We’re certainly heading in the right direction. But as the BBC’s figures show, when it comes to bridging the gap entirely, there is still plenty of work to do to achieve equality. James Watkins is an employment solicitor at Slater and Gordon in Cardiff. For more, see slatergordon. co.uk

BACK, BACK, BACK!

CARDIFF LIFE AWARDS: THE RETURN! The Cardiff Life Awards – our fifth one! – are back in 2018, with the organisers planning a yet stronger event following this year’s sell-out success. The Awards will be held on 15 March 2018, with the all-important nominations opening in November. International rugby ref Nigel Owens has been confirmed as host again, after his memorable, witty and emotional performance at the Awards earlier this year. And the initial roster of sponsors has been unveiled, led by headliners Cardiff Airport and including Cardiff BID, Genero and WSET. “Awards momentum continues to build, five years on,” said MediaClash events manager, Steph Dodd. “We had a record number of nominations and attendees in 2017, from the coolest indie to the largest corporate, and are intending to produce a yet more successful

celebration of the very best of Cardiff businesses next year.” In 2017, the Awards sold out some weeks before the big über-glam night, with over 50 people on the waiting list for tickets. The Awards are backed by an eight-month marketing campaign, peaking in March. In 2017, the Awards were even trending on Twitter, such was the huge interest. New this year is a free seminar in November, ‘How

To Win A Cardiff Life Award’. “We’re keen for all companies to put the best possible case forward for a Cardiff Life Award,” added Steph. “We’ll be running through what the judges are looking for and explaining how the Awards work.” For sponsorship enquiries, please contact mark.george@mediaclash.co.uk. FILMS

THE REEL THING Organisers of the Iris Prize – Cardiff’s international LGBT short film prize – have announced a new partnership with Capital Law, to support the annual festival’s film industry conference, the Producers’ Forum. The partnership expands on Capital Law’s previous support of the event, which this year takes place in Cardiff on 13 October. As part of the partnership, the Forum will be hosted by Capital Law solicitor Nick de Figueiredo. “We are thrilled to continue our support of the Iris Prize Festival, and welcome the opportunity to work with Iris and its filmmakers through the Producers’ Forum,” said Nick. “Although the legal aspects of filmmaking are arguably some of the least glamorous, getting them right is essential for a successful production. We look forward to working with Iris to help equip emerging filmmakers with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed.” For more: irisprize.org

ocated near the coastal village of Rhoose, and within walking distance of beautiful Grade I listed Fonmon Castle – and, crucially, the popular Blue Anchor pub – Rose Cottage has been extensively and considerately improved into a very handsome family home, set within elegant, private surroundings. Approached via a private drive, a gravel driveway is flanked by well-tended lawns that sweep around the house. Framed by a gabled porch, a wide oak entrance door leads you straight into a pretty dining/reception room with central fireplace, attractive quarry-tiled flooring and oak beams. From here, there is access to a homely sitting room, with another attractive fireplace and relaxing views across the front and rear gardens. At the back of the house, the comprehensively fitted kitchen – with more of those commanding views over the garden – is a lovely, informal dining space for family or guests. Also on the ground floor is a useful utility room, with boiler and plumbing appliances; a conservatory with a connecting door to the double garage; a decent-sized cloakroom; and a rear hallway with a main staircase that goes up to the first floor. Once upstairs, a spacious central landing provides access to the four bedrooms – two of which (including the master bedroom) have their own en-suites – and a family bathroom. Two detached outbuildings (one currently housing a garage, workshop and shower room, the other a wood store) offer more useful storage space. And there’s much potential – with the relevant planning permissions in place, of course – for extending the property into further living accommodation. 94 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

CARDIFF LIVES

Q&A

F

ormer Brookside and Les Miserables star, entrepreneur, creative producer and entertainer Stifyn Parri has worked with some of the biggest names in showbiz. He’ll be bringing his “outspoken and outrageous” one-man show, Shut Your Mouth, to Chapter on 30 (in Welsh) and 31 August (in English). Batten down the hatches... Where’s home in Cardiff? St Fagans. It’s quiet, picturesque, and close to the M4 and A470. It feels like I’m in the countryside, although I’m literally only eight minutes from John Lewis! You’re performing your one-man stand-up show, Shut Your Mouth, at Chapter later this month – what can audiences expect? It’s a cheeky peep at the bonkers situations I’ve been in – an eclectic mix of comic and poignant anecdotes of my showbiz life, including my time in Les Miserables, Brookside, meeting Hollywood royalty, coming out, and plenty of celebrity gossip that I should probably keep to myself. Any scabrous bits of celeb gossip you can share in advance? Well, I’ve worked with Bassey and Grace Jones so you can just imagine the stories I have. Come and see, it’s all in my show!! You’re also MD of your own creative events company, Mr Producer – give us a little flavour of what you do... Over the years, I’ve been creative producer for the opening of Wales Millennium Centre, and have produced many events for TV and 12 BAFTA Awards ceremonies. I’m also a mentor and coach, and hold workshops for all ages in confidence, motivation, pitching, audition and interview technique, and entrepreneurial skills, both in English and Welsh. Most famous person you follow on Twitter? Matthew Rhys (The Americans) – I know him well – and my friend, Sian Lloyd. She has over 100,000 followers! How do you relax? Gardening and watching TV, both with my other half, David. Proudest moment so far? Probably getting this show [Shut Your Mouth] together and selling out in venues such as Wales Millennium Centre last year, which I didn’t expect. Most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you? My most embarrassing moment is included in my show – all I can say is that I was in a toilet at a comedy club, and it ended with me not wearing any underwear. You have to hear the full story!

98 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

STIFYN PARRI The presenter, entertainer and impresario on bonkers situations, showbiz and losing his underwear When did you last cry? Last night – it happens at least twice a week. I cry right through Long Lost Family and One Born Every Minute. Dream dinner party guests? Kate Bush – no-brainer! If push came to shove, what would be your final meal of choice? Fish and chips, in the paper, with pickles, vinegar and plenty of salt – and no fork! I was brought up in a fish and chip shop, and I still love it. How would your nearest and dearest describe you? Excitable, vocal and constant. Who would play you in a film about your life? Me, obviously. But if I’m unavailable, Brad Pitt.

What’s on your bookshelf at the moment? Gardener’s World, and various autobiographies. Must-watch television programme? QVC. I could watch the women’s fashion for weeks on end – I find it hilarious. Those presenters can talk for hours about the most boring earrings. If you had a superpower, what would it be? To ban moods. I cannot stand moody people. Best thing about Cardiff? It’s compact, clean and has everything I need at my age! Favourite shops in Cardiff? Hawkes Essentials in Morgan Arcade – I have wardrobes full of their stuff.

Guiltiest pleasure? Listening to other people’s conversations. The more boring, the better!

Cardiff Life is ten this year – where were you and what were you doing ten years ago? I was probably talking, laughing, eating or drinking! And probably all at the same time.

Most important lesson life has taught you? There is literally only one person in the whole world stopping you from doing anything you want – yourself.

Locally, where do you like to eat and drink? To eat, The Longhouse, which is very local to me at Culverhouse Cross. For drinks, I’d go to Chapter – the place is so sociable.

Which piece of music always sends a shiver down your spine? This Woman’s Work by Kate Bush. It gets me every time.

Finally, surprise us with a little-known fact or secret about yourself… I was born Stephen, not Stifyn (which is pronounced Stephen, by the way). I just changed it, for attention – I think it’s worked!

Karaoke choice? You will never see me singing karaoke – it’s against my law!
