EDITOR’S LETTER
This year’s Cardiff Life Awards were a night to remember! See page 13 for more; INSET: Let some spring sunshine into your wardrobe. See page 50
L
ast issue we asked a bunch of people to give us three words which best reflected Cardiff. There were a whole variety of responses, but a few of the words which came up over and over were “vibrant”, “friendly” and “fun”. They’re also three words which I think perfectly sum up our Cardiff Life Awards, too. This year’s event was (dare we say?) the best ever with more entries than ever before, and a truly wonderfully diverse set of winners. From solicitors to stylists to cyclists, and even drag queens, we had winners from every corner of Cardiff, and I’m proud that here at Cardiff Life we can recognise, and honour, the diversity of the city. Turn to page 13 for a plethora of pics from the big night. Elsewhere in this issue, we talk to Alexandra Burke who’s back at the Millennium Centre starring in The Bodyguard, brunch at KIN + ILK and find the best places for a relaxing spa break (it’s a hard job, but someone’s got to do it). So Cardiff, get out there and enjoy this vibrant, friendly and fun city!
Y
n y rhifyn diwethaf gwnaethom ofyn i griw o bobl roi i ni’r tri gair gorau i ddisgrifio Caerdydd, yn eu barn nhw. Cawsom amrywiaeth eang o ymatebion ond roedd “bywiog”, “cyfeillgar” a “difyr” ymhlith y geiriau a glywsom dro ar ôl tro. Rwy’n credu bod y geiriau hynny hefyd yn ddisgrifiad perffaith o Wobrau Cardiff Life. Rwyf am fentro dweud mai seremoni eleni oedd yr orau erioed, oherwydd cawsom fwy o enwebiadau nag erioed o’r blaen a buddugwyr a oedd yn wirioneddol amrywiol. Gwelsom bobl o bob cwr o Gaerdydd yn dod i’r brig, a oedd yn cynnwys cyfreithwyr, steilyddion, beicwyr a hyd yn oed breninesau drag, ac rwy’n falch iawn ein bod ni yma yn Cardiff Life yn gallu cydnabod a chlodfori holl agweddau amrywiol y ddinas. Trowch i dudalen 13 i weld llwyth o luniau o’r noson fawr. Ar dudalennau eraill y rhifyn hwn, rydym yn sgwrsio ag Alexandra Burke sy’n dychwelyd i Ganolfan y Mileniwm i serennu yn The Bodyguard, rydym yn cael pryd hwyr y bore yn KIN + ILK ac rydym yn dod o hyd i’r mannau gorau i fwynhau sba (mae’n waith caled ond mae’n rhaid i rywun ei wneud!). Felly, bobl Caerdydd, ewch allan i fwynhau bywyd yn y ddinas fywiog, gyfeillgar a difyr hon!

KICK OFF
Cardiff City FC stars Danny Ward and Jazz Richards gave pupils at Ely’s Herbert Thompson Primary School a helping hand with literacy and footballing skills, thanks to the club’s Community Foundation, the official Bluebirds Charity. On 5 March, the pair delivered literacy and practical football coaching sessions to children from Year 6, before signing programmes and posing for photographs. Jazz says, “It was great to join in with a literacy session with the children. It was impressive to watch the children write and then read out a piece of commentary over a Cardiff City goal, and watch them grow in confidence in such a short space of time.” The event was organised to mark 10 years of the Foundation changing lives, during which time it has invested more than £10 million in sport and education programmes across South Wales. Through this work, the charity has supported more than 230,000 children, young people and families to change their lives for the better. For more: www.cardiffcityfcfoundation.org.uk

Building work has begun on The Dogs Trust’s Cardiff Rehoming Centre, due to open in 2021. The state-of-the-art centre in Splott will have 78 glass kennels complete with underfloor heating, as well as a veterinary suite boasting hydrotherapy and physiotherapy rooms. To mark the start of the two-year build, the charity held a launch event at The Senedd on 13 March. Joining rescue dogs Coffee and Hercules was Welsh rugby star Shane Williams MBE, Dogs Trust interim CEO Jim Monteith and assembly members including Paul Davies. “This was the dream of our late chief executive and patriotic Welshman Adrian Burder, and we are proud to be continuing his dream by turning it into reality and the new rehoming centre will be named in Adrian’s honour,” says Jim Monteith. The charity hopes up to 50 jobs will be created at the centre, to help deal with the 1,000 stray and abandoned dogs in Cardiff. “I’m excited to see it all come to life over the next couple of years,” says Shane. CAFÉ CULTURE
Sarah Lloyd-Davies, Suzanne Packer, Andrew Wilson-Mouasher and Karen and Jonathan Hodge declare the café open
Penarth is home to a new café which aims to give people an insight into the work of hospices as well as a nice cuppa. The Marie Curie Café can be found in the hospice’s basement and is open to members of the public as well patients and families. The Cardiff and the Vale Hospice was opened by actress Suzanne Packer, who stars in Keeping Faith. Suzanne has previously visited the hospice with her brother, Olympian Colin Jackson, and says, “Meeting the staff, volunteers and families and hearing stories about the care provided here for people living with a terminal illness has been inspiring.” The café was funded by the Hodge Foundation, which also supported the refurbishment of the hospice’s day therapy and outpatients unit in 2016. Sarah Lloyd-Davies, hospice manager, says, “We want people to understand more about the work we do here, and are excited to open our café doors and encourage people to come in and have conversations with us about end of life care.” The café is open from 9.30am to 1pm Monday to Friday, and hopes to expand its hours by recruiting volunteers. CAPTURE THE CASTLE
Giving Tafwyl a shout-out
Cardiff Castle will be rocking when The Killers take to the stage this summer. The band, fronted by Brandon Flowers, comes to the Welsh capital on 28 June, ahead of headlining Glastonbury the following night – with these two dates the band’s only UK shows. It’s the band’s first show in the city since 2012 with them likely to showcase new material as well as their biggest hits. The band recently unveiled a new stand-alone song, Land Of The Free, with a video directed by Academy Awardwinning director Spike Lee. For more: www.gigst.rs/KillersCC The Killers are only Human

GROWTH SPURT
Welsh music festival Tafwyl has added another night so revellers can party for longer. It has partnered with music distribution and promotions company, PYST to present an evening of music, arts and street food at Cardiff Castle on 21June, which will then be followed by its jam-packed weekend event. The move follows Tafwyl enjoying its biggest turnout last year. Friday night will see a range of Welsh artists across two stages, including Gwenno, Lleuwen a’r Band, Adwaith, Serol Serol as well as Huw Stephens who will be DJing between acts. Recent Welsh Government funding will see the festival extending as well as firming up its success for the future. Eluned Morgan, minister for international relations and Welsh language, says, “It’s wonderful to see home-grown, ‘Made in Wales’ events flourish, which is why the Welsh Government is proud to support events like Tafwyl – and see them grow further and showcase Wales as a vibrant, dynamic and outward looking nation. “Cultural events like Tafwyl are vital in attracting a new audience and are instrumental in growing the Welsh language by 2050.” For more: www.tafwyl.org

CARDIFF LIFE awards
W
hat is this life if we have no time to stand and stare…?” Awards give opportunity for pause. Pause to think how well a business has done in the year. Pause to consider a city and how it is changing. And pause to ponder on just what remarkable individuals there are in Cardiff, developing companies, employing more people, finding new routes to market, increasing the amounts of goods and services bought locally, risking start-ups, volunteering for charities, acting civically, seeking to improve this city… And so it was at the Cardiff Life Awards, the most emotional yet. It was a night to be proud of Cardiff. We came to celebrate and stayed to cheer – resoundingly. The warmth in the room was palpable. The brand-new and hotly contested Civic category was won by Creative Cardiff, which has had a profound effect on Cardiff as a place in which we are proud to live and work. For many, the highlight of the evening was the surprise Special Achievement Award, which recognised the extraordinary life and work of Steve Williams, inspirational PE teacher at Whitchurch High School. Even more brilliant was the moment the award was presented, via video message, by Wales’ top goalscorer of all time, Gareth Bale. “Inspiration work is rare in itself, but giving inspiration across decades is extraordinary,” said Gareth. “I’m delighted to be able to honour someone who has touched thousands of people’s lives through the years.” The award was met with roaring applause and a standing ovation. Reader, whisper it not but there was even just the hint of tears throughout the room. Such was the power of the Awards and the sheer exhilaration of celebrating Cardiff that they were trending on Twitter – trending nationally, that is. Obviously. Reading the nominations and attending the Awards makes us feel yet better about Cardiff – and we hope that the same is true of Cardiff Life as issue in, issue out, we celebrate the very best of Cardiff. On this uberglamtastic evening, of shimmering beauty, of whooping and surging emotion, of celebration and coming together, ultimately there was one winner: Cardiff – always. To all who entered, judged, sponsored, partnered, entertained, gushed, filmed, aftershowed, photographed, supported, organised, hosted, fed and dined us all, just one word: thanks. These were the very best yet. And next year? It’s started already. Tick tock. Greg, Steph, Emma, Mark, Kate, Claire and the Cardiff Life and MediaClash Events teams

It’s a cliché for a good reason to say that we couldn’t have organised the Cardiff Life Awards without our wonderful sponsors – but, well, we couldn’t’ve. But beyond that, it’s also superb that so many leading companies are part of this singular celebration. To each: thank you.

Artful squatters Some unusual squatters have taken up residence in Castell Coch. A rabble of otherworldly interlopers, meticulously handcrafted by Cardiff-born contemporary artist Laura Ford, have been concealed and revealed within the 13th century castle’s architecture as figures appear cloaked, crouched or soaring from the lofty rafters. Laura’s reinterpretation of the folk lore and folk art, which is so intrinsic to the public perception of the castle, takes on a fantastical and sometimes sinister edge. Rendered in bronze, jesmonite and ceramic, and clothed in brilliant swathes of wool and felt, her child-sized figures are inherently tactile, and their postures are pointedly and recognisably human. The exhibition is open until 6 May. For more www.cadw.gov.wales

W
e are still over the moon at winning Best Event at the Cardiff Life Awards! Dragged 2 Church, held last year, was voted Cardiff’s best event. We accepted the award alongside some of the participating drag artists and members of St Andrew’s including the minister, Des. It was one of many alternative fundraisers (Come on, a drag show in a church?) we’ve held to raise vital funds to keep the beautiful building on Wellfield Road open. Our next big venture for the church is the Roath Bake Off on 11 May. You’ll see many famous faces, including Harry Potter actor Chris Rankin, Ruth Wignall and the Dirty Vegan himself Matt
Jason sees double
Pritchard, judging the event. There will also be live music and stalls with funds going toward essential repairs for the church. Keep an eye on social media for updates. It’s been a great few weeks for theatre in Cardiff, we absolutely loved Motown the Musical at the Wales Millennium Centre; epic songs and a great, inspiring story. We also had the cast of Agatha Christie’s The Mirror Crack’d on our Radio Cardiff show, they didn’t give away much on ‘who did it’ and even when we went to see it at the New Theatre, we still couldn’t work it out… Maesteg beckoned and we took a little trip to see the legend that is Jason Donovan at the town hall. What a show. We are really loving stage shows where the audience is involved, they have an almost

autobiographical tell-all feel. Nathan presented Jason with a biro artwork, which the Too Many Broken Hearts singer signed. It was then auctioned off for St Andrew’s Church. Gosh, we are saints... They say never work with dogs and kids but we did, and in the same weekend! Firstly, we MC’d a children’s dance show in Bedwas, which was brilliant fun! We love hosting things a little bit out of our usual comfort zone, although Nathan had tutu envy and left wanting sparkly tutus! The event was raising funds for two brilliant charities. The next day we continued our fundraising alongside City Hospice (well done on their Cardiff Life Award too) by hosting
their 5K dog walk in Bute Park! So much fun and a wonderful turnout of gorgeous pooches! As Cardiff Airport is launching KLM flights to Las Vegas, we attended their event and won a bottle of bubbly in the quiz. We go to Vegas every year so we were pretty clued up! We love fashion, and were lucky enough to see a sneak peak of Vivienne Westwood’s SS19 range at her store, hosted by the head designer, what a great evening. Alexandra Burke and Company in The Bodyguard UK Tour
42 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk
Queen of the Night Singer and actress Alexandra Burke talks reprising the role of Rachel Marron in the award-winning musical, The Bodyguard By Emma Dance Photos by Paul Coltas
A
“I definitely feel at home in this role”
ny woman of a certain age (ie. mine) will know the story of The Bodyguard inside out. The film, and the songs, made so famous by Whitney Houston back in the early 90s, were the soundtrack to many a teenage sleepover. All that’s a long time ago now though, and since then it’s made the transition from screen to stage, and the love story between pop diva Rachel Marron and her bodyguard Frank Farmer, has garnered over a whole new generation of fans – and won a bunch of awards along the way. Now it’s returned to the Wales Millennium Centre with Alexandra Burke once again in the starring role. The singer and actress who shot to fame more than 10 years ago after winning the fifth series of The X Factor first took on the role of Rachel in 2014 – making her West End debut – and played the part for two years. Now she’s loving being back. “The tour has been going really well,” she says. “I’m absolutely knackered – but it’s going really well. All the cast and crew are brilliant. “I was very scared about coming back to the show. My first experience was so good so there was that thing of ‘If I go back, will it be as good as it was before?’ I was really worried that it wouldn’t be.

ONE TO ONE Alexandra Burke and Benoît Maréchal in The Bodyguard UK Tour
“But it’s brilliant. I definitely feel at home in this role, and I’m lucky because it really suits me, I think. And of course, I grew up listening to Whitney and I’ve been singing her songs from a young age. It’s a role that really means a lot to me. “I’m really happy to be back in Cardiff too. I’ve performed in the city a few times – on my own tour as well as with The Bodyguard and Sister Act – and it’s always great. I’ve got family here as well so I’ll get to see them too which is a lovely bonus.” When Alexandra first joined the cast almost five years ago, it was her first serious foray into the world of musical theatre. But since then she’s also played Deloris in Sister Act, Roxie in Chicago opposite Martin Kemp, and Svetlana in Chess, alongside Michael Ball, firmly establishing herself as one of the West End’s leading leading ladies. “Having the experience on the other shows has definitely changed the way I am as a performer,” she says. “I hope that anyone who saw the show before will be able to see a difference in my performance
between then and now. “But my favourite number has always been I Have Nothing. I really adore that song. My favourite part of the show though is with Benoit, who plays Frank. In the karaoke scene when he sings I Will Always Love You. I have to be really careful not to fall out of character because it’s so funny!”
“It really is a privilege to do this show. I am so grateful to have this opportunity” As much as she loves the role, Alexandra says that she’s planning on this being her last tour – at least for a while. “I yearn to be back in the studio full time,” she says. “I do struggle with being away from home and missing out on family time.” “I don’t think I’m done with the theatre
though. I always said I wanted to play Roxie in Chicago and I’ve been blessed to have been able to do that, and it would be awesome to be Donna Summer in The Donna Summer Musical and I’m really open to different roles that will take me out of my comfort zone.” “Performing in the theatre, and performing as a singer go very well together, and the theatre work has definitely improved my stamina as a performer.” “But I am looking forward to being back in the studio and recording next year. I’ve missed it terribly.” “But then, all those feelings go away when I’m up there on stage. It really is a privilege to do this show.” “There aren’t that many shows out there that consistently sell so well so I really do count my blessings and am so grateful to have this opportunity.” The Bodyguard is at Wales Millennium Centre until 27 April. STAND AND DELIVER Baby Byrne has arrived and her timing was just perfect, on a date the same as her daddy’s shirt number
“My waters broke in a fashion I’d assumed only happened in the movies”
A
t half past midnight on 14 February, 11 days before my due date, we thought we would almost certainly be having a Valentine’s baby. My waters broke very early that morning, in a fashion I’d assumed only happened in the movies, and we hurriedly made our way to hospital. As fate would have it, Jemima Hazel Rhona Byrne was not destined to enter the world until 15 February at 8.27pm. Fifteen was, very aptly, Lee’s fullback shirt number throughout his professional rugby career. Jemima is the most wonderfully perfect little being we could possibly have hoped for, and it’s incredible to have her in our lives. Her arrival triggered what I have decided to call a magical kind of chaos. After a week in hospital due to a few complications for both Jemima and I, we have begun to settle into a life at home as a family of six. That’s me, Lee and Jemima, and the schnauzers Hank, Marcy and Doug. Incidentally they instantly adopted Jemima as one of their pack. There’s a high chance she’ll bark before she talks! In the Byrne household, overnight, multitasking has taken on a whole new meaning (I’m writing this as I breastfeed) and rocking has become a sport. I’m so accustomed to bouncing Jemima to sleep cradled in my arms, I even started swaying with one of the dogs the other day. And it is amazing how much that subtle movement gets the steps ticking up on the old fitness tracker.
I’m nailing that 10k daily target like never before. Several weeks in though and we still haven’t totally figured out anything, least of all the intricacies of the modern ‘travel system’. This used to just be called a pram or pushchair, but today is made up of several attachments with a multitude of levers all, I’m convinced, designed to catch out the sleep-deprived new parent. Sooner or later I know I’ll be the one stranded with a screaming newborn in a supermarket car park unable to collapse the contraption to fit it back in the boot. Never mind the years
of pressures in live telly, in my new ‘mum life’ it’s possibilities like these that really get my heart racing and encapsulate my biggest fears. So, if you do see me out and about at the shops with Jemima, by all means come and say hi. And if it’s past closing time, the sun is going down and we’re looking lonely, there’s every chance we may need a hand with some complex mechanics. have lived with my partner for 10 months, and we are looking to purchase a property together. We will be purchasing the property with the assistance of a mortgage and I will be paying the deposit, using some money I have saved. If we sell the property in the future, I would like to recover my deposit. Do I need anything in writing? A: When two, or more, people purchase property together they can own it as 'joint tenants' or 'tenants in common'. Where property is owned as 'joint tenants' you will each have equal rights to the whole of the property, your share being transferred to the other person (in this case your partner) in the event of your death. In broad terms, as a starting point, your partner would be entitled to one half share of the proceeds of sale if they elected to ignore your agreement. In this case, if you wanted to recover your deposit, you would need to be able to demonstrate to
the court, if it got that far, that your interest in the property should be different from the legal title (i.e. that it should not be equal). These cases can be extremely complex and are often an uphill battle. If the title is registered as 'tenants in common', however, you can own the property in unequal shares, and determine (in a will) how you would like your share to be handled in the event of your death. This should be coupled with either:a. A Declaration of Trust setting out how the sale proceeds are to be divided upon sale; or b. An agreement (known as a 'cohabitation agreement') setting out how the sale proceeds are to be divided upon sale. You can also determine, with the agreement, further provisions as to the regulation of contributions to the household (such as utilities and mortgage repayments) and gifts, amongst other things. These documents should be prepared by a

“Finding the right inspiration is essential to creating a suit”
as another. Take just one week, last month, for example – more happened than I ever thought possible. I met with DJ Locksmith from Rudimental in London to create a suit for an A-List celebrity wedding, I went to Cheltenham gold cup wearing one of my garments, Gareth ‘Alfie’ Thomas wore a red suit I had made for him to a charity event in support of #Zoe, and Shane Williams wore one of my suits on television in honour of Wales’ Six Nations victory. I’ve been tailoring a suit for Xavier Rush for the launch of his new cosmetics company too, and I was thrilled when record-breaking athlete Josh Llewellyn-Jones wore one of my suits when he visited 10 Downing Street and Buckingham Palace with the Stereophonics. I still find it hard to believe that this is really my life, but the truth is, that this is who I am now. I am a father, I am a son and I am a designer and my brand, hopefully, represents this.
52 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk
So, how do I go about creating a suit? Especially when I want to balance following trends, and maintaining the unique aspect of my brand. It’s all about inspiration, vision and creativity. When you’re looking at fabrics as a fashion designer, you need to be able to visualise it as a garment. For example, if it’s a very stiff fabric, you need to be able to imagine what type of garment will suit it best? You need to have an eye to be able to look at something and see how to make it better – that’s the creativity. Then, finding the right inspiration is essential to creating a suit. It’s just as important as the attitude with which you wear the pieces. Looking at everyday life and mundane events helps me to visualise my creations as art pieces. I enjoy this creative process, as it allows me to see more to the suit than just the visual aspect of it, but also the story behind it. While newer fashion trends focus on the bold and bright, they also often take inspiration from, and honour, older heritage and traditions. This is why my next collection will be inspired by the 1600s, an era of sophistication
and luxury, but still creative and unique. Imagine this — a long road, a manor, elegant figures, bright colours, an atemporal style. It will be a classic collection to mirror the end of summer and the start of autumn, with muted colours, warmth and light. I want people, through my new clothing line, to feel a sense of timelessness and power. That’s not all I’m working on though. I am hoping to establish an online store within the next three months, and I am in the process of planning several events over the next six months with a fashion show in September, and another event which I’ll be announcing in May. All in all, Nathan Palmer Bespoke has come so far recently, and I couldn’t be more thankful for those who have supported me and my brand. But this is only the start of this brand — its best is yet to come. n For more: www.nathanpalmer.co.uk

KIN + ILK
Emma Dance thinks she might have found the best brunch in Cardiff…
I
can’t remember exactly when brunch became a “thing” – when all-day fry-ups began to be replaced by shakshuka, and smashed avocado on sourdough, and riffs on eggs Benedict, But a thing it most certainly is. And I, for one, am very happy about it. Especially when places like KIN + ILK exist. Because, quite frankly, I think I’d be pretty happy to eat their brunch dishes for every meal of the day, every day of the week. Yes, they are that good. There’s a distinctly bread-y bent to most of the plates – Pettigrew sourdough bread to be precise. (On a low/ no carb diet? Bin it – for one day at least – I implore you. You won’t regret it.) And there are lots of eggs in various guises. But given that much of the menu is based around these two ingredients, it’s actually surprisingly varied. Smashed avocado on sourdough might seem pretty
60 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk
run-of-the-mill these days, but bold seasoning with lemon juice and chilli oil and a smattering of crunchy, lightly spiced dukkah bringing texture as well as flavour, makes the KIN + ILK version far superior to the plates of bland, green mush that are churned out of many kitchens. Turmeric scrambled eggs are the colour of burnished gold, with the spice bringing a delicate warmth that hums gently against the fresh notes of chilli, minted yoghurt and coriander. Chorizo hash, meanwhile, is a bowl full of comforting flavours and textures with nuggets of paprika spiked sausage nestling among chunks of fluffy potatoes, ribbons of warm slaw, and peppery rocket leaves. A perfectly poached egg, which releases a flood of bright yellow yolk and the merest touch of the fork, completes the dish. It’s the Turkish eggs, however, that leave the biggest lasting impression. Two poached eggs, floating on a bed
restaurant
“Turmeric scrambled eggs are the colour of burnished gold” of garlic spiced yoghurt with chilli butter and slices of sourdough teetering on the edge of the plate, just waiting to dive in. We add a side of crispy bacon too, and although the combo might sound a bit odd, it doesn’t taste it – it tastes unequivocally delicious. There’s richness, there’s freshness, there’s creaminess, there’s crunch. There’s heat from chilli, and coolness from yoghurt and satisfying saltiness from the bacon and it sets the tastebuds alight in a way that you wouldn’t expect from what it basically a very pimped up version of eggs on toast. If you’re craving a sweeter breakfast (or just fancy making your brunch more of a two course affair – and why not?) then the pancakes are rather lovely indeed. Soft and fluffy, they come either with bacon, blueberry and maple syrup (and yes, blueberries actually do work with bacon!) or, an indulgent, gooey banoffee version with banana, chocolate sauce and syrup. The drinks menu is well thought out too. There’s coffee (natch) and KIN + ILK are, rightly, very proud of their beans which are sourced from El Salvador and create some of the best cups of coffee in the city. If you’re feeling the need for a vitamin boost then there’s fresh smoothies, or the hot chocolate – made with actual chocolate – is rich and luxurious and not far off being a dessert in a mug. Monday to Friday, you’ll likely find the KIN +ILK on Cathedral Road filled with people busily tapping away on laptops, with a few mums and toddlers popping in and out and it’s all very chilled out and relaxed. At the weekend though, the whole vibe gets more fun and you’re just as likely to find people quaffing espresso martinis as espressos with their brunch. Go in the morning, go in the afternoon, go during the week or go at a weekend. But definitely go. And definitely go hungry. n

Simply soup-er! Think soup is just for winter? Think again… Super Soup with Pangritata By Imran Nathoo (serves 4) This super vibrant soup is not only delicious, it is also packed full of nutrients, is easy to make, uses up any vegetables you may have and can be made in bulk so you have enough for the next day or freeze for the future. It makes a great light lunch dish and is surprisingly substantial, and it’s vegan. Pangritata are Italian style breadcrumbs, flavoured with herbs, garlic and lemon zest. Use generously to add a dash of texture and a pop of flavour to anything from pasta and soups to risotto and salads. Just sprinkle a good helping on top. I made this using the end slices of a brown bread loaf. Ingredients: For the soup: 1 tbsp rapeseed oil 1 onion, diced 1 clove of garlic grated (use a fine grater) The outer leaves and central core of a head of cauliflower including any off cuts, roughly chopped Large handful of spinach leaves (can use frozen spinach too) Large handful of broccoli florets (can use frozen here too) Large handful of frozen peas Approx 250ml-450ml vegetable stock Fine sea salt Cracked black pepper Extra virgin olive oil
For the pangritata: 2 end slices of a brown bread loaf (any bread will so but stale bread works better or from frozen) 2 tbsp olive oil 1 clove of garlic 2 sprigs of rosemary Zest of 1 unwaxed lemon Couple of pinches of fine sea salt Method: For the soup: 1 Put a large pot on a low to medium heat. Add the rapeseed oil and fry the diced onions and garlic until soft then add the cauliflower leaves and core and fry for a little longer, around 4-5 minutes. Be sure not to burn the garlic so keep an eye on the heat. 2 Next add the remaining vegetables; spinach, broccoli and peas (do this even if using frozen elements). 3 Cover the vegetables with just enough vegetable stock, not too much otherwise the soup will be too thin in consistency. 4 Season with a large pinch of salt, then turn down the heat and pop the lid on the pot and cook for 20 minutess. You want a gentle simmer rather than a ferocious boil. In the meantime make the pangritata (see below). 5 When the cooking times is up, check the veg is soft and cooked through. Then either use a stick blender or decant into a jug blender and
blitz until smooth. 6 Return to the pan if using a jug blender and check seasoning. Adjust with salt and pepper as required. 7 Divide into bowls and serve with the pangritata and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. For the pangritata: 1 Blitz the two end slices of a loaf of bread to a coarse crumb in a food processor or similar. 2 In a frying pan heat the oil on a low to medium heat and finely grate the the garlic into the pan. Fry without colouring the garlic. 3 Add the breadcrumbs and coat in the garlic oil and cook until golden. 4 Stir regularly to ensure even cooking and prevent the crumbs from burning. 5 Strip the rosemary leaves from the stalks and roughly chop, add this to the pan and mix. The stalks can be retained to add flavour to soups. 6 Zest the lemon (ideally unwaxed but if waxed give the lemon a wash under warm water and clean with a coarse sponge). The lemon can of course be retained for further use. 7 Season with salt to taste. Imran will be holding a Fast Family Cooking class on 9 June at Let Them See Cake. nspiring a new generation of bakers to rise to the occasion has led to two awards for a Cardiff bakery. Brød – The Danish Bakery, was founded by Betina Skovbro in 2015 to help the artisan craft flourish. Betina’s business has now been named 2019 Small Employer of the Year at the Cambrian Training Apprenticeship, Employment and Skills Awards. And Brød apprentice Rebekah Chatfield proved she is a star baker after winning the Apprentice (Level 3) of the Year at the awards in
Builth Wells. “From the start of setting up the bakery it was my dream to bring up and inspire, the next generation of artisan bakers” says Betina. “Having won these awards means we must be doing something right, and hopefully can inspire many more.” Betina’s love of baking started at home in her native Denmark, where you are never too far from a bakery. “My grandfather (FarFar) was a baker in central København, and so we were very used to tales of making bread (brød), pastries (wienerbrød) and cake (kage) – and plenty of
sampling too,” says Betina. “When I moved to Wales in 1998, I very quickly felt at home but I missed the bread. That was the catalyst for this adventure. I didn’t expect to win but I am delighted. “I thought it might be a gamble to start an apprenticeship programme because we have no margin for error in baking. It means I expect a lot from my staff, but they have responded superbly.” The complete list of award winners: • Large Employer of the Year: Powys County Council’s

RUN AND ONLY
WINNING STREAK Community and sports projects in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan have hit the jackpot thanks to National Lottery funding. Over the last 25 years nearly £457million has been invested in the area, spent on almost 7,700 worthwhile projects. A grant of £46.4million went to developing the Principality Stadium while £31.7million went to the iconic Wales Millennium Centre. £6.7million was awarded to the Grade II-listed Dyffryn House and Grade I-listed garden, and £3.1million on restoring Penarth Pier and Pavillion
back to their former glory. Most grants tend to be for £10,000 or less and have been spent on powering sports teams and community causes. Wales’ double Olympic Taekwondo Champion, Jade Jones, is one of more than 1,000 athletes who have benefitted from the funding. Jade says, “Over the last 25 years, the National Lottery has supported the development of thousands of athletes like myself which has helped us to secure podium places at the highest level.” For more: www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards
STEM CELLS Cardiff will be home to even more scientists of the future after Techniquest received a funding boost. The educational charity, based in Cardiff Bay, conducts school outreach programmes reaching more than 50,000 pupils in Wales every year. It wants to make interactive STEM related learning accessible to all, with £40,000 from the Scottish Power Foundation and £5,000 from the George and Esme Pollitzer Charitable Settlement helping to achieve its goal. The money will allow the charity to deliver outreach to more than 10,000 Welsh school pupils, while also investing in specialist AV equipment.
A receptionist at a Cardiff care home will be putting her best foot forward when she takes part in the London Marathon on 28 April. Lynette Hartman, who works at Ty Llandaff in Pontcanna, is running for Children with Cancer UK and hopes to raise £1,500. “Having become a grandmother last year, I decided this year was the year to take the bull by the horns,” says Lynette. “More than 10 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK, and so this is such a worthy cause.” For more: www.childrenwithcancer.org.uk
Science hits the right note
Abe Sampson, fundraising manager, says, “We’re delighted to be able to support our outreach programme with additional resources, creating meaningful opportunities for the future STEM workforce across Wales. Following the recent news of permission to extend our building, 2019 is already shaping up to be an incredible, transformational year for our organisation.” The science discovery centre has secured planning permission for its multi-million pound transformational project, The Science Capital. Work is expected to start on the centre’s extension in spring 2019 and it will be open to the public by summer 2020. For more: www.techniquest.org

Barn to be wild Space for all in the Vale of Glamorgan By Samantha Walker 68 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

t’s fair to say that not all barn conversions are created equal. Take Lydmore Barns for example. Not only does this beautiful property boast 14 acres of grounds, it has been painstakingly converted to provide luxe living while its surroundings give a relaxing back to nature hit. Countryside views abound with the grounds hiding two lakes, a nature garden, an orchard and a sloping field, all bordered by mature hedgerow. And if that wasn’t enough for your green fingers, there’s also a greenhouse and raised planters aplenty. So with the grounds and gardens ticked off your property wishlist, let’s turn our attention to the house – it’s on the spacious side so could take a while. Double doors open onto the reception hallway, currently used as a dining room with a wood burner adding to the hygge feel, with two sets of French doors opening onto the rear garden. Another wood burner can be found in the living room,
property
which comes complete with floor to ceiling windows. A lot of thought has been given to the kitchen – with these grounds and the potential for fresh produce you deserve an abundance of space in which to rustle up some culinary magic. It goes without saying therefore that the kitchen is bespoke; integrated appliances include an oil-fired AGA, fridge, electric oven and double Belfast sink. It’s certainly a space where you can chat with friends and family while cooking up a storm, enabling us to tick another item of your wishlist – the central island with granite worktops. The breakfast room is open to the kitchen, with built-in furniture for storage also allowing it to be used as a study. The garden room is dual aspect and takes in flora and fauna and countryside views. A utility room provides a convenient space for laundry as well as extensive storage and another WC. Well, no one wants to wash their dirty linen in public do they? At the other end of the property, off the living room,
is another hallway with windows to the driveway. Off this hallway is where you’ll find four spacious double bedrooms, with the guest bedroom featuring an en suite shower room. There’s also a family bathroom complete with a modern suite comprising a roll-top bath, double sinks, WC and corner shower cubicle, while a family shower room ensures everyone will stay squeaky clean. The dual aspect master suite can be found upstairs, and boasts en suite facilities. Upstairs, too, is a light and spacious family/games room with an open plan entertainment area, perfect for bonding and relaxing. With living accommodation satisfyingly crossed off our wishlist, let’s take one more look outside as, surprisingly, there’s even more to see including a double garage and driveway parking for a plethora of cars. An extensive flagstone terrace includes a covered seating area with heat, light and power, ideal for al fresco dining and entertaining in all seasons. We’ll raise a glass to that. n

“I’d invite Mrs Hinch to a dinner party so she could wash all the dishes” What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Being invited to cover Grenada Chocolate Fest last year and then winning Grenada Tourism Authority’s Blogger of the Year award. What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you?
KACIE MORGAN We talk food, glorious food with the blogger, and find out why it pays to check before you text… Hi Kacie! Tell us a bit about yourself…
I’m a Cardiff girl born and bred. I grew up in Ely as part of a staunchly working-class family; my dad was a builder and my mum was a part-time childminder. We were always taught to be kind to others, work hard and don’t put up with any crap. When I was 16, I reluctantly moved to Ross-on-Wye with my mum to study for my A-levels. I missed Cardiff so much, I jumped at the opportunity to return to study journalism at Cardiff University. What is your job? How long have you been doing it?
I set up my food and travel blog, The Rare Welsh Bit, almost nine years ago and I also write on a freelance basis for the likes of the Co-op’s Food Magazine, Sainsbury’s
Magazine, World Travel Market and Thomas Cook. How do you like to spend your free time?
I love to cook, eat out and travel… I guess you could say I’ve found a job I really love as even when I’m not working, I can still be found scoffing my face or gallivanting off on another adventure. Where in Cardiff do you live and what makes it special?
Well, my postcode technically falls within Roath, but I live a stone’s throw away from the Royal Oak pub, so I think it’s more Splott or Adamsdown way. What I love about the area is the sense of community. I know a few of my neighbours by name and always chat to the staff in my local corner shop.

I went on a date with a guy and things weren’t going too well. I popped to the loo and texted one of my friends, letting her know what I thought of him. When I returned to the table, he had a face like thunder. It turned out I’d texted my date instead of my mate – oops! Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?
Ainsley Harriott (he’s won me over with his Caribbean Kitchen series), Louis Theroux (bet he’s full of conversation starters!), Jimmy Carr (to make everyone giggle) and Mrs Hinch, the cleaning blogger, (so she could wash all the dishes afterwards). When did you last cry, and why?
Probably last week as I was feeling a little overwhelmed by work and have a few minor health concerns playing on my mind. What job would you be terrible at?
One with lots of red tape or anything to do with numbers. Who’s your celebrity crush?
Gary Dourdan, who played Warrick Brown in CSI. Those eyes… What’s your guiltiest pleasure?
Gravy, cheese and chips from Chippy Lane, aka Caroline
Street (I don’t care what anyone says, it’s not Chippy Alley!) If you have a spare five minutes in the day, what are you likely to fill it with?
Eating, or updating my to-do list (I’m a bit of a control freak at times – if only I exercised the same restraint when it came to food!). What’s your earliest childhood memory?
I was born with clubfoot (bilateral talipes) and had numerous operations on my feet as a baby and infant. I have a very vague memory of a gas mask being placed over my face. Favourite places to eat in Cardiff?
If I’m going to treat myself to lunch, I’ll usually head to Milk and Sugar for eggs Benedict or something off the specials menu, and I’m a big Madame Fromage fan; I highly rate the Welsh rarebit and the lamb cawl. When the day turns to night, you’ll usually find me somewhere down Albany Road; I love Chai Street, Ichiban, Da Mara, Anatoni’s and Hotpot Spot. Tell us about a secret/ underrated Cardiff spot we might not be aware of…
It has to be Madhav, the Indian supermarket/café on Lower Cathedral Road, Riverside. We’d better let you get on…. What are you doing as soon as you’ve done this?
Ordering a takeaway from Uber Eats. I’d planned on cooking a sausagemeat bolognese but I just don’t know where the time’s gone! For more: www.therarewelshbit.com
