I
f there’s a better way to spend a sunny, lazy, bank holiday than wandering about Cardiff, I’ve yet to hear it. Maybe it’s because I knew I was about to be appointed editor of this amazing magazine but everything felt perfect. The delighted tourists, the contented natives, the woman in a patterned pink hijab enjoying her ice-cream in the park, the man in a stunning sequin dress sipping a pint by the waterfront, the loved up couples slowly following the Taff Trail – it was like the colour has been turned to enhance and highlight what a beautiful, diverse and evolving city Cardiff is. I am so honoured to now be a part of this scene and be able to share in telling the story of Wales’ capital.

Doctor Who star Bradley Walsh, Cold Feet’s James Nesbitt and singer Brian McFadden are back as part of the star-studded line-up at the Celebrity Cup at the Celtic Manor Resort in July. Bradley, who is currently in Wales filming his second series playing the retired bus driver and time-travelling companion, Graham O’Brien, returns to an England side hoping to regain the trophy they lost in the final last year to Wales. He says, “The Celebrity Cup is one of my favourite weekends of the year, at Celtic Manor which is my favourite hotel in Britain! We have such a lot of fun as players and it really is a fantastic couple of days. I was lucky enough to be in the winning team in 2017 and hopefully we can get our hands back on the trophy this year.” Other celebrity golfers appearing on the fairway on 13 –14 July will include Mrs Brown’s Boys’ Brendan O’Carroll for Ireland, Scottish presenter Jenni Falconer, and the sports reporter Michelle Owen who will be representing Wales. STORIES OF COURAGE
Welsh National Opera’s Youth Opera of young singers will present a fully staged production of Brundibár on 22 and 23 June. The children’s opera, which comes from the Czech word for bumblebee, delivers a message of hope and unity triumphing over an evil tyrant. Ironically it was made famous by Nazi propaganda footage of a performance in the Theresienstadt (also known as Terezín) concentration camp in occupied Czechoslovakia. The camp was used from 1941-1945 as a fake ‘model ghetto’ for fooling Red Cross representatives. The Jewish girls were seen to receive good food and a well-rounded education, but many of them were later deported to extermination camps like Auschwitz to be murdered.

This powerful and moving story about the girls is also being told in an accompanying exhibition, which is based on the book The Girls of Room 28. It reveals, through survivor interviews, documentation, and artwork, how the girls aged between 12-14, lived in a dorm-like atmosphere and received instruction in the arts, often thanks to many of the Jewish elders also interred, who were later starved to death. What makes the WNO Youth Opera WNO music director performance even more poignant and Tomáš Hanus remarkable is it will be conducted by WNO music director Tomáš Hanus who has a particular emotional connection to the work – his mother is one of the survivors of Theresienstadt camp, and took part in the concentration camp performances. She also contributed to The Girls of Room 28 book. Tomáš says, “Making music and art is a powerful ingredient for the freedom of humanity and freedoms of each individual. For the children in Terezín concentration camp, separated from their parents, music provided them with freedom in the face of a Nazi regime attempting to steal their hope and prepare them only for death. “Hans Krása’s Brundibár allowed those children to breathe, to experience human dignity, friendship and beauty… sadly for most of them it was the last ray of sunshine to enter their lives before being brutally murdered in Auschwitz. All children, no matter their circumstance, deserve to feel the sunshine that the arts and creative freedom can bestow.” For more: www.wno.org.uk

THE ICE MAN COMETH
A triathlon coach from Cardiff has become the first Welshman to complete the world’s toughest, coldest, windiest ultra-distance race. Mark Whittle finished joint fifth at the 6633 Arctic Ultra in Canada in March. He explains, “The 6633 Arctic Ultra has a fearsome reputation, with winds blowing up to 70 miles per hour, temperatures dropping to minus 40⁰C, and around 75 per cent of competitors dropping out before the finish.” The 380 mile quest involves mountain passes, frozen rivers, ice roads, and some of the world’s most inhospitable terrain throughout its gruelling nine-day duration, with each racer pulling a sled behind them and carrying all of their clothing, food and water for the entire journey. Mark, who did most of his training in South Wales in the mountains of the Brecon Beacons National Park, says, “For me, the 6633 was never a race. With such a high DNF [Did Not Finish] rate and the extreme conditions in the Arctic Circle, my goal was to try and finish the race. So to finish in joint fifth place, and to complete the race on my first attempt, has left me extremely pleased.” For more: www.whittlefit.com

Time to throw away the mower? Artificial grass is set to be the must-have garden trend this summer!

We caught up with Andrew Graham - one of the directors of this rapidly growing local company, to answer a few common questions people have when deciding whether to take the leap and reclaim their weekends!
What do you think is driving the popularity of artificial grass? No more weekends spent mowing the lawn is obviously a big motivation. I know a lot of people enjoy lawn mowing- but not everyone! Customers who buy artificial grass from us are typically busy people who want to regain their weekends or retired people who want to take it a bit easier. The product looks so realistic that in a lot of cases the lawn looks even better than real turf. Is it difficult to install? Not at all. We have a great team of installation experts who can do all the necessary groundwork and fitting for you. But a lot of our customers just do it themselves. We’ve added a ‘how to fit’ guide on our website which details the whole process, including ground preparation and how to install a weed membrane underneath.
Is the product durable? Yes it’s incredibly robust. The products we sell come with a nine year UV guarantee and the built-in drainage holes mean that any rain just drains away- like it would do with regular turf, we have a display in store on which hundreds of customers have walked and it still looks fantastic. It’s completely suitable for pets and it can be easily hosed down. Are there any pitfalls which customers should look out for? You just need to ensure you’re buying a quality product. We supply products from the best artificial grass manufacturers in Europe but there is a lot of cheap Chinese grass on the market, particularly online which customers should definitely be wary about. The whole point of installing artificial grass is to remove stress from your life, so really you would want a product that is going to last many, many years and not cause you problems.

My dad started our carpet business almost 50 years ago but about five years ago we noticed the huge potential in artificial grass and just went for it really. We went into grass in a big way because we felt that customers need confidence and want to deal with a specialist. As the region’s biggest retailer we now get preferential treatment from the big suppliers in Europe and we can pass all that advantage onto our customers. I think the huge number of amazing reviews that we receive on social media stands for itself. Have you found the number of people buying artificial grass increasing? Absolutely! Every year we are amazed at the growth I customer numbers and this year has got off to a great start so I think we’re on target to break our own records again! ■
What maintenance is required? Not much to be honest. It depends on how perfect you want your garden to look. If you want to you could brush any leaves off and any marks can be removed with water and a bit of detergent. Does it really look like the real thing? Absolutely! The technology has developed substantially in the last few years. People are often amazed when we show them the products. We have hundreds of rolls in stock and plenty of samples for customers to take home. We realise some customers will have lots of questions but our great team in-store will happily

ales Millennium Centre is about to launch a weekly Saturday supper clwb giving a whole new meaning to the phrase, ‘this tastes funny.’ Each Saturday of the month will feature a themed-night, either comedy, drag, burlesque or musicals. The nights, starting 1 June will see guests treated to a Bellini cocktail on arrival, three small plates from Wales Millennium Centre’s contemporary Welsh menu, and a dessert cocktail, all while enjoying live performances from the very best in local, national and international talent. Sarah Leigh, general manager of arts and creative at the centre, helps fill us in, “We’ve been running our cabaret venue, ffresh, at the Centre for almost three years and, since starting it, we have been honing our choice of acts and the overall experience. The Saturday Supper Clwb is the next step for us. We want to create an event for audiences that fully showcases the world-class entertainment we present and a fantastic dining experience, combining the two to make one sublime might out.

“We’ve chosen four of our audience’s favourite genres of cabaret – from the current ffresh programme, and are working with four of the Centre’s favourite artists to curate the entertainment; a night at the musicals with David Mahoney; drag with our resident drag queen Connie Orrff; comedy with Cardiff’s own Leroy Brito; and burlesque with Foo Foo Labelle. Each of the artists will bring to Cardiff the best local and international performers in their genre to entertain audiences whilst they enjoy food and drink from the Centre’s new menu, all included within the £30 ticket price.”

“There are already supper clubs happening across Cardiff; however, we bring to the table the highest quality of entertainment and artists to take the diners’ experience to the next level,” says Sarah. “We have the best international artists combined with the best local artists.” This is backed up by the stellar line-up; on 1 June, bilingual host Connie Orff brings with her the hottest drag talent from across the UK with Dixie Normous, Dolly Trolley, and headliner Charlie Hides from TV’s Rupaul’s Drag Race. Next up is David Mahoney on 8 June who curates an evening of musical theatre featuring Tiger Bay The Musical star Vikki Bebb, classical singer Steffan Rhys Hughes, and musical-theatre sensation Tom Hier, with piano accompaniment from David George Harrington. This is followed by Foo Foo Labelle and the Cardiff Cabaret Club on 15 June who will introduce a fun-packed evening of British burlesque featuring Stage Door Johnny, Miss Betty Blue Eyes, Vixie Rouge, Goldie Luxe, Kittie Katastrophe and Arabella Sparkles. The June culinary and theatrical programme ends on 22 June with a comedy night fronted by Cardiff comedian Leroy Brito, who says, “I’ve really enjoyed performing at ffresh and so can’t wait to host a night at the new supper clwbs at Wales Millennium Centre. Experience a taste of Italy at Dyffryn Gardens this summer To celebrate 110 years of the Pompeiian Garden, the team at DYFFRYN GARDENS have created an Italian inspired vegetable garden within the Kitchen Garden
O
nly fifteen minutes outside of Cardiff, Dyffryn Gardens is one of the best gardens that the nation has to offer. With a Victorian mansion and Edwardian gardens boasting two walled gardens and an enormous glasshouse set within 55 acres of gardens, the property is nothing short of spectacular. The Italian Garden is a celebration of 110 years since the construction of the property’s Pompeiian Garden. This garden room was inspired by a trip to Italy by Reginald Cory,
the son of the estate’s owner, around the turn of the century. Cory was an influential British horticulturalist who inherited the Dyffryn estate in 1910 after his father’s death. Following the success of last year’s World War I inspired allotment garden, the team at Dyffryn have worked this year to create an Italian-themed garden. As well as being a delight to see, it will provide fresh ingredients for use in Dyffryn’s cafés and give visitors the opportunity to buy its produce. The garden contains a replicated typical Italian allotment shed, along with an array of vegetables from across the Italian landscape. This includes Italian onions, garlic, cannoli beans and some unusual purple cauliflower from Sicily. The vegetables will then be used in recipes that will be served in the café for visitors to enjoy. Growing Mediterranean vegetables in the climate of South Wales has presented the Kitchen Garden team with some interesting challenges. One of these has been the trial of growing tomatoes outdoors in the typical Italian way. Blight often forces British gardeners to grow their tomatoes in greenhouses to protect them. As a result, the garden staff at Dyffryn have had to design elaborate horticultural strategies in order to allow the Italian tomatoes to flourish.
The Italian Garden will offer keen gardening enthusiasts the ideal opportunity to ask any questions they may have to Dyffryn’s expert gardeners and volunteers. The Italian Garden will remain on display throughout the summer and autumn, with different varieties of Italian-influenced vegetables being grown until around October. The Italian Summer theme will also be celebrated across the site, with an Italian-influence in our family activities, shop and cafés. Be sure to pop by and have a look round. ■

ardiff has been booming with exciting events over the past few weeks, and of course we’ve tried our best to make it to as many as we could. We’re selfless like that! Starting with St David’s Hall which was home to yet another incredible show by Britain’s Got Talent winners Collabro. And boy, do those boys know how to put on a show! Their Road To Albert Hall show is a mix of classic theatre with Motown and sparkly pop. What more could you want? We caught up with them before the show and they’re always super excited to perform for the Welsh crowds. Cardiff was full of X Factor alumni recently, and we had the pleasure of interviewing Jake Quickenden, who was starring in Hair The Musical, celebrating its 50th year at The New Theatre. We loved the show, it leaves you in a psychedelic trance and feeling like you’re part of the tribe and storyline. Also starring in the Age of
Aquarius classic is Marcus Collins, that boy can sing. In fact, the whole cast was incredible and we highly recommend seeing the show if you haven’t before, and being honest, even if you have! Another interview we had for our Radio Cardiff show was with X-Factor’s 2014 winner Ben Haenow, who returned to The Globe in Roath for another intimate gig. He’s always a great laugh and undoubtedly one of the most talented to ever come off the show. and we wish him all the best with his new album. However, we cannot mention that TV show without talking about Alexandra Burke who won the show in 2008. She was based here in Cardiff for a few weeks as the lead role in The Bodyguard Musical down at the Wales Millennium Centre. Wow, her portrayal of Rachel Marron, who was played by Whitney Houston in the movie which also starred Kevin Costner, and her vocals on all those well-loved left: Hanging out with Britain’s Got Talent winners Collabro; below: cheers to Cardiff!

It’s so clear why she’s gone on to have such great chart and theatre success. After our chat Nathan presented her with a portrait created in lipstick and kisses from his own lips, which she loved. Dining wise, we tried the new menu down at the Caribbean restaurant, Turtle Bay, which is always one of our favourites – they never disappoint. We also checked out the gorgeous Côte Brasserie on Mill Lane. They have a little switch up seasonally so that keeps it exciting too – check out our social media for the review. There’s also this thing now called the Bottomless Prosecco Brunch. Well, we tried that for our friend Sophia’s birthday at Grey in The Hilton Hotel... well, what can we say? We kept searching for the bottom of the glass and it never came. The staff were brilliant and very attentive and you 100 per cent get your money worth. It was a very happy birthday for Sophia, and it was a very happy time for us too...! Elsewhere we attended the Sophia Gardens outdoor cinema event showing Bohemian Rhapsody. This outdoor trend is certainly picking up and we can see why.
It is of course an amazing film, but it was the perfect evening for it too. It left us vowing to see more Adventure Cinema events. We also hosted The Big Welsh Wedding Show down at The Depot. Be sure to check those guys out for all your wedding inspiration. Thanks for asking us Fran and Holly. We had a brilliant time. And of course we had that incredibly glorious Easter Bank Holiday... and we took full advantage. We not only hosted a fundraiser karaoke afternoon/ evening for Prostate Cancer UK at The Butcher’s Arms in Canton, but we partied afterwards until the sun came up... you’re never too old for doing that right? Life is for living we say. Coming up 11 May, we continue our fundraising to keep St Andrew’s Church open by bringing back The Roath Bake Off! Old Havana
It’s a rum old do when Emma Dance visits the Cuban-inspired joint
I
f cocktails are your thing, then the flourishing Castle Quarter is becoming a bit of a go-to destination, with libation peddling and lively venues aplenty. Among the more recent additions is Old Havana, which proclaims itself to be ‘the home to fresh and authentic Cuban food and drinks.’ Certainly, with an old-style Cadillac parked up in the covered outside seating area, and cosy booths with plenty of leather and mahogany, there’s been some effort made to get a Cuban feel, even if it is a slightly clichéd version. The drinks menu is pretty decent with, as you might expect, an emphasis on concoctions created with Havana rum. There’s plenty of other options though if rum ain’t your spirit of choice, and although there’s nothing particularly unusual, everything is more than quaffable. Sometimes though, especially a cocktail or two into proceedings, you just gotta eat – am I right? And unlike

many of the bars in the vicinity you can grab a decent bite at Old Havana up until 10pm. The emphasis here is most definitely on the drinks though, so the food menu is pretty limited – in fact it’s predominantly made up of variations on toasted sandwiches, with a couple of other bits and pieces. We start with the antipasti sharer board which is, I think meant to be Old Havana’s interpretation of the Italian classic. There’s a good selection of delicious nibbles, with salami, ham, sundried tomatoes, red pepper hummus, guacamole, flatbread and tortilla chips, but unfortunately the promised pimento peppers stuffed with cream cheese had been replaced without warning by strips of roasted red peppers and a separate mound of cream cheese which lacked the piquancy that pimentos would have delivered, and there just wasn’t enough flatbread and tortillas to scoop up the cheese as well as the other two dips. I order the Classic Cubano sandwich which claims to be ‘bursting with pulled pork, cured ham, salami,

“What you are going to get at Old Havana is a really fun night out” Swiss cheese, pickled gherkins and mild yellow mustard.’ Were all those things present? Yes, they were. Was it bursting with fillings? I think that’s a bit of a stretch. It’s a good toasted sandwich, but sadly it didn’t live up to my memories of a Cubano eaten in Miami’s vibrant Little Havana neighbourhood, not least because the bread was more of an Italian-style panini than authentic light, crisp Cuban bread. My companion chose the Cuban club sandwich with roast chicken, cured ham, tomato and paprika mayo. What earned it the ‘Cuban’ label we’re not quite sure, the paprika in the mayo perhaps, but nonetheless it was tasty enough. I think that Old Havana’s claim at authenticity is probably not backed up by what it’s producing, and it’s not going to rock your culinary world. What you are going to get at Old Havana though is a really fun night out fuelled by reasonably priced rum-based cocktails. And let’s face it, sometimes that’s all you really want. n

For the meringue 225g caster sugar The 4 saved egg whites Method 1. Butter 4 large individual ramekins or chef rings (place on a baking sheet lined with parchment) and heat the oven to 180°C/160°C Fan/Gas 4. 2. Bring the milk, cream, zest of 1 lemon and 25g butter to the boil, then turn off the heat. 3. Beat the 4 egg yolks with the 100g caster sugar, then strain the hot milk over them, whisking constantly to make a custard. 4. Push the brioche slices into the ramekins or the base of the chef rings, pour in the custard and let them sit to soak for 5 minutes, then bake for 20 minutes. 5. When the brioche has 6 minutes left in the oven, spread the sugar for the meringue onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and heat in the oven (the same temperature) for 6 minutes. Remove the brioche bases and
the sugar. Whisk the 4 egg whites until they form peaks, then whisk in the hot sugar and continue whisking for a couple of minutes, until the meringue is thick and glossy. Mix the lemon curd with the elderflower cordial and spoon onto the brioche bases. Next, spoon the meringue into a piping bag fitted with a star nozzle, then pipe a ‘Mr. Whippy’ style meringue topping. 6. Finish the meringue tops by caramelising the outside with a chef ’s blowtorch. If you don’t have one, pop into a preheated oven at 220°C/200°C Fan/Gas 7 for about 7 minutes until they start to colour. If using chef rings, to decant, run a knife around the inside of each ring to release the pudding. Use a spatula to ease onto a serving plate. 7. Pizza specialists Dusty Knuckle have successfully raised more than £40,000 to help them turn an old park warden’s house in Sophia Gardens into a brand new 60-cover restaurant. The success of the kickstarter campaign, which lasted 30 days and received pledges from more than 650 backers, means that Dusty Knuckle can commit to developing the site in the most sustainable way possible; from the materials used to overall design of the space. Dusty Knuckle founder Phill Lewis explains, “We looked for the perfect venue for a long time, and when the Warden’s House came up, we knew this was it. International Women’s Day was celebrated in style on 8 March with a glitzy charity lunch and afternoon of entertainment in aid of St David’s Hospice Care. Leading Wales broadcaster Sian Lloyd got the proceedings under way for the Newport-based charity at the sold out inaugural Ladies Day event at Cardiff’s Sophia Gardens. Guests enjoyed a sumptuous meal, took part in a wonderful fund raising raffle and were entertained by X Factor’s James Williams. They also heard from the World’s oldest skydiver, Cardiff’s Dilys Price, OBE, from speaker of the year Jane Manuel, from Denise Lovering, commercial director from Glenside Commercial and chair of Caerphilly Business forum, and Charlotte Leyshon, director of Lux Family Law, who spoke about female entrepreneurs and motherhood. Piatto pasta house, the latest venture by Cardiff restaurateur Giovanni Malacrino and his actor son Luca, launched with not one, but two parties. More than 200 guests joined the team at the two events on 17 and 18 March, including reality TV’s Jordan Davies and Isobel Mills, from Ibiza Weekender, boxer Joe Cordina, and actor Thaer Al-Shayei. Guests enjoyed tasters from the menu including a vegan pesto di rucola e noci (rocket salad, walnuts and virgin olive oil, blended for a zesty variation on the basil classic), ravioli with wild boar, and spaghetti and ‘courghettini’ served in basket bowls of parmesan or vegan cheese. S
nip. The first piece of hair fell to the floor. Then another, then another. I felt slightly sick as I watched the pile of my tresses growing and growing on the floor of the Guy Christian City Salon. “We’ll cut the rest once you have your colour done,” said Maria. The rest? I inwardly panicked. How much hair was actually left? Don’t get me wrong. The whole hair cutting thing had been discussed at length with Maria and her colleague Jenny (who was in charge of the colour portion of the treatment), and everything that was happening had been agreed, but as a serial ‘trim-er’ and someone who hasn’t had more than about an inch of hair cut at a time for at least five years, the reality of seeing swathes of my long locks falling to the floor was faintly traumatic – at least initially. The thing is though, I never really actively wanted long hair. For many years my cuts

always hovered vaguely around the shoulders, until five or so years ago I started growing my hair for my wedding, and then a combination of laziness and fear meant that I just sort of kept going.
“I haven’t had so many compliments about my hair for years” But I had decided it was time for a change, and so had put myself in the expert hands of the team at the Guy Christian salon in the Capitol Centre. And once the initial shock at the first couple of scissor snips had subsided I really couldn’t have been happier. Both Jenny and Maria were genuinely lovely – chatting, explaining to me what they were doing and reassuring me as we went along (I don’t think I was hiding my nervousness very well!). Years of bleaching and dying had left my
hair with brassy, yellowy tones – especially close to the ends, but Jenny performed some magic with her expert balayage technique, disguising the remnants of past treatments, and banishing any pesky grey hairs, with a combination of rich, warm chocolate and copper colours, leaving my hair looking shiny and healthy. Then once Maria had finished cutting in some layers to take some weight out of my thick mop, introduced some sweeping bangs to frame my face, and blow dried in some beachy waves to help accentuate the colours, my transformation was complete. And was it worth those initial moments of panic? Absolutely. I haven’t had so many compliments about my hair for years. And the time it takes to dry it in the morning has probably halved. fter spending the past 20 years travelling and coaching around the world, Cardiff is beginning to feel like home. I have been here for almost a year now, since becoming Cardiff Blues head coach ahead of the 2018–19 season and arriving from Brisbane last May. It is amazing to think our season is now complete and it is safe to say the campaign has had its ups and downs. We did not quite manage to reach all of our targets, but I have been really impressed with the professionalism of our boys throughout. Their commitment to each other and the club has been outstanding. They are a great bunch of young men and are very tight knit. I’m really looking forward to the future with this exciting group at the Arms Park and in sport, as ever, I’m sure there will be more highs and lows. Now we are in the off-season however, I’m looking forward to relaxing in our new home and travelling around Europe some more. That is one of the great things up here, the proximity of so many amazing places – you just can’t do that in Australia. Our experience so far of living in Cardiff, has been nothing short of brilliant. I am really enjoying living in a capital city that has a big country town feel. Cardiff’s a great city and there is always something going on whether it’s sporting, cultural or business. My twin daughters, Bella and Aimée have been over here since December and have absolutely
loved it. I was initially renting a place in Radyr, which was perfect as I was settling in – bang in the middle of the Arms Park and our training base at the Vale hotel. It’s a beautiful, quiet leafy suburb, which has a really nice local buzz and a great little Italian restaurant, Cicchetti. By the time the twins arrived, we were into our family home in Pontcanna. I absolutely love the area and its closeness to the city. It has such a great feel about the place with all the parks, coffee shops and restaurants. There is always somewhere new to check out. My wife Tracey is also now here in Cardiff with us, while our two elder girls Romi and Saskia have visited for a month but are now back in Australia to continue their university studies. We have all been able to visit so many amazing places, whether it’s the Victorian arcades or one of the many castles around Cardiff, Pen y Fan and the Beacons or some of the beautiful beaches further west, Wales has so much to offer. The culture, people and country itself has been a wonderful experience so far. We spent five years living in Ireland and our twins were born there. I feel that the Welsh and Irish are pretty similar and have a great outlook on life in general. So, here’s to many more in the Welsh capital. I’m looking forward to seeing much more in the months ahead.”

BAY ISLAND VOYAGES Jane Hides, co-owner of Bay Island Voyages, the high speed boat operator offering a variety of boat trips in and out of Cardiff Bay, reveals how she went from hating boats, to messing about on them for a living and then scooping the Cardiff Life Award for leisure and tourism You won! Congratulations! Talk us through the build up / the nerves / the reaction to winning… We entered with absolutely no expectation of winning, especially when we saw who else was in our category; so becoming a finalist for us was an achievement in itself. On the night of the Awards at City Hall, we were so relaxed at the thought of not having to do a speech, that when we actually won and I was handed the mic, I got carried away and thanked everyone possible! How did you celebrate? And where is your award now? We did carry on late into the night at the Awards afterparty at the Kuku Club, but we also plan to celebrate with our full team next month, because none of this would be possible without their hard work. And, as I don’t think it would survive long on one of our boats, the award is currently in my living room. Are you Cardiff born and bred? I am, but my husband Ed Hides and our business partner Sam Hartley are both from New Quay, West Wales. They ended up in Cardiff because of work over 12 years ago and have remained here since; but all three of us are frequently back in Cardigan Bay visiting family and messing around on boats. Have you all always loved boats? Not quite! Until I met Ed 10 years ago, you would never have got me in a boat. I hated them, even crying silently on our second date when he took me on a rowing boat! That’s some turnaround! Tell us a little about Bay Island
Voyages – what is the company’s background? We are the original high-speed boat operator in Cardiff Bay dating back to 1999 when the completion of the Barrage created the 500-acre freshwater lake, enabling speedboat rides in the bay. We purchased the company in October 2016 at the end of the season whilst it had been closed for a few months, and have since developed a wide variety of trips to offer the public. What was the company’s inspiration? It was, and still is, to be the best highspeed boat operator in Cardiff Bay and offer a variety of interesting trips, not only in the Bay but out in the Channel and surrounding areas. Tell us a little about those interesting boat rides… We offer a variety of trips, ranging from a 15 minute Bay Blast, which is a highspeed, fast, adrenaline trip around the Bay. Then we’ve got two different coastal trips, where we go through the Barrage lock and out into the Bristol Channel and take in the coastline and Flat Holm and Steep Holm Islands. …and which is your personal favourite? That would have to be the Flat Holm visit, you can be there within 15 minutes once leaving the barrage locks, and it’s a three-hour drop off on the island, just spending time away from the hustle and bustle of a busy city. Also one of our newest trips is our full day on Steep Holm Island – we pick up from Weston Super-Mare and Cardiff, drop off at the island so you have a full day to explore
and learn more about the history and wildlife on offer. How might you describe your key clientèle? More often people expect our clientèle to be young adrenaline junkies, but actually we get a lot of older people going out to sea exploring the islands. Our age range varies from five to 90 years – there is no age limit on our trips, just height. If you are over 1.1mtrs tall and able to hold on, you can ride with us. We have also have children’s birthday parties, stag and hen dos, as well as working with film companies and offering private charters. What do you think it is about Bay Island Voyages that helped it secure the Cardiff Life Award win? I think only when you write down what you’ve done in the past year do you realise what you’ve actually achieved. The growth of the business in its first two years was exceptional, which led to a 50 per cent increase in staffing, the work with local charities and schools, as well as securing future partnership successes. What are the highs and the lows you’ve experienced in setting up and continuing the business? Any advice to someone who would like to do similar? Don’t buy a business when you’ve just had a baby! Seriously it was a hard time to begin with as I had a six week old, we’d just renovated our house, and then we bought the business. But the three of us worked long hours, and made a lot of changes in a short space of time in order to re-launch the business with a fresh new outlook. There were initial highs especially when we saw the bookings
What have you found to be the best tools for growth in your business? Hard work, graft and not being afraid of taking chances. We invested in a customised online booking system at the end of 2017 and that helped our business grow rapidly. It allows people to book any time of the day and night, and often we see a lot of bookings come in around 1am, which we would never have been able to take before. The use of social media, especially Instagram, has helped – people can see what our trips are about. And of course winning this Cardiff Life Award will help! Aside from your Cardiff Life Award of course, any other moment you have been particularly proud of? Our involvement with the Volvo Ocean Race, especially meeting the boats in the early hours of the morning and enabling the film crew to get the right shots, as well as some of the filming we have done with various media crews – seeing the boats on TV makes you smile inside. Is there someone in business that you admire and try learn from? I think all three of us admire the way our parents have worked in their businesses. My father was a chef and restaurateur. He worked long hours and really grafted to make sure his company was successful. Sadly he passed away in our early days, but I think he’d be really proud of how far we’ve come, and that we’ve won this amazing award. What do you think winning the Cardiff Life Award means to you, the team and the business? The award confirms that the hard work everyone in the team has put in, pays off. It really is a team effort. We couldn’t run the business without everyone’s input and trust in us.

What should be included in a will? Is there anything specific that should be focused on? Your will should include all of your assets and personal possessions. This includes property, savings, insurances, art, jewellery and any household contents. What will happen if I die without a will? If you die an intestate person (without a will), then distribution of your estate is governed by law. Your spouse or civil partner will inherit according to law, but your children and other family members may be excluded. What is probate? Probate is a five-phase process that ensures that the correct taxes are paid against your assets on your death, and that the remaining estate is distributed to the beneficiaries indicated in your will, or in the absence of a will, according to law. Do I need to use a solicitor for probate? No, you don’t. But we always recommend it. This is particularly the case if the estate is above the inheritance tax threshold, if there is no will, the estate is bankrupt, or the estate has complicated arrangements. Probate is designed to ensure that the correct taxes are paid, and the advice of a professional is always recommended.
How much is inheritance tax? Currently the tax-free inheritance tax allowance in the UK (which is sometimes called the ‘nilrate band’) is £325,000. An additional residence nil-rate band (currently £125k) can be claimed if a main residence is left to a direct descendant. The rate of inheritance tax is currently 40 per cent and is payable on the value of your estate which exceeds the nil-rate band threshold and any available residence nil-rate band. How can you pay less inheritance tax? Making a will; gifting the estate to your spouse or civil-partner – tax free; putting assets into a trust or leaving something to charity are just a few of the ways you can reduce your inheritance tax liability. Taking out life insurance will not reduce the inheritance tax liability, but the proceeds could help family members when it comes to paying the tax bill. The life insurance policy can be placed in a trust to ensure that the amount paid does not increase the value of the chargeable estate. Estate planning can be complicated, so you should take advice from an expert.

What advice would you give those who are looking to sort out their wills? Whilst the thought of making a will might be a daunting prospect for some, the pros of doing so greatly outweigh any cons. For example having a will allows you to determine who should benefit from your estate, who should care for your young children and can reduce the potential for claims being brought against your estate by disgruntled beneficiaries. Many people prefer to opt for ‘do it yourself wills’ rather than instruct solicitors. However the laws and regulatory requirements surrounding the making of a will can be complex. s we made the blink-and-you’llmiss-it turn from the A4120 and trundled down the single track road we couldn’t help wondering if the signs (and Google maps) pointing the way to Nanteos Mansion were, in fact, playing some sort of joke on us. After all, you’d think that a Georgian mansion might be a pretty easy landmark to spot, wouldn’t you? They weren’t (obviously), but tucked away in a 30-acre estate in the heart of the Ceredigion countryside, Nanteos is the very definition of secluded and it was some minutes before it popped into view. In fact, going to Nanteos is pretty much the luxury version of going off grid – don’t expect to get any phone reception, and wifi is patchy at best – which really is all part of the Nanteos appeal. And as someone who seems to be almost permanently attached to my smartphone, the opportunity to just switch off and digitally detox was more than welcome, especially in such gorgeous surroundings. There’s just 21 rooms in all (including an uberluxurious king suite and four family rooms), each named after people, places and events in some way associated with the history of the house, and sympathetically decorated to reflect the period of the mansion, but with contemporary twists and touches to ensure that you feel at home. The weather during our visit was typically Welsh – wet, windy and grey – so exploring the extensive gardens and grounds (complete with pet cemetery), apart from a quick wander, was out of the question. No matter though, since we were more than
happy to cosy up on the comfy chairs in our suite, reading, munching on the homemade biscuits that had been thoughtfully provided, and enjoying the peace and quiet. While in many hotels bathrooms can be something of an afterthought, not so here. Not in the least. The en suite was almost as big as the bedroom, with a shower, roll top bath, and heated wooden bench for some post-ablution luxuriating. When the website says things like, ‘If the tranquillity of our location doesn’t immediately touch your soul, then the opulent décor, sumptuous rooms, fine dining and discreet, attentive service will surely combine to cast aside the realities of everyday life. At Nanteos it’s all about you. Somewhere to come and go as you please; where privacy is assured and where time, if you want it to, stands still,’ they aren’t kidding. Preprandial cocktails in the library, followed by dinner in the rather grand setting of the yr Eos restaurant adds to our thoughts of possibly moving in forever. Chef Gerwyn Jones puts local produce front and centre in his menu of comforting classics with modern twists, and the cooking was bang on point in every one of the dishes we tried. Nanteos Mansion team have got just about everything right to create a relaxing countryside retreat. After all, sometimes you need to just need to unplug, unwind and get away from it all. And when you do, Nanteos Mansion is the place.

hether you’re thinking of a completely new kitchen, or simply want to refresh a tired colour scheme, three Cardiff designers share their insider knowledge on the hottest trends for the coolest kitchen. The first shocker is a move away from the bright lights of white in the kitchen for 2019/20. Ceri Hill, design director of the Chalkhouse Interiors, which helps us to create functional and beautiful handmade kitchens, explains, “Black, or almost black, is the new black. White kitchens have reigned supreme for years but now it’s finally time to move over to the dark side. If black is a little too adventurous, then opt for a really deep blue or dark green, less intimidating but equally dramatic.” Rebecca Klein, head interior designer at Artisan Interiors who specialise in bespoke German kitchens, agrees that darker forces at work. She says, “Deep yellows, forest greens, intense blues, burnt orange and terracotta reds – these dusky bold colours are not only restricted to the cabinetry – they have gradually made their way onto worktops, creating depth and bold statement pieces.” It’s not just white that has had its day; the metro tile might finally be down the tube as Ceri explains, “A geometric or a Moroccan inspired tile has crept onto many a wish list.
Also we can stop getting upset about distressing the wood. “The naked, raw wood texture is a fast-growing movement making its way back into our homes,” says Rebecca. And taps are no longer just stainless steel, as Kevin Daley, sales director of Avantgarde Designs a family firm with more than 50 years in offering high quality bespoke kitchens, explains, “Rose gold handles are seen more now and look so striking.” Apparently this is a metal made popular by the Apple’s use of it for iPhones. It would seem even smart storage is becoming fashionable. “Fresh herbs, knives, your iPad, that Moroccan chopping board from a friend – all items you require while making your statement dish,” says Rebecca, “An ingenious, yet simple wall panelling system allows you to showcase your most prized possessions, while keeping everything within arm’s length.” Kevin is seeing more and more clients choosing options such a chef ’s pantry and integral bin systems. As Ceri says, “Clever storage is a must, even in a traditional kitchen you need to think about incorporating some to ensure your kitchen is as functional as it is beautiful. An open and shut case? The experts at BERRY SMITH LAWYERS can offer advice on all aspects of private client law

am expected to work more than my contracted hours to open and close the store when my manager is on leave. Am I entitled to be paid for the additional time worked?
A There is no statutory right to receive an additional payment for any overtime worked. However, your average pay for the total number of hours worked (including overtime) must not fall below the National Minimum Wage – currently £8.21 for 25 year olds and over. If you work overtime, the overtime rate of pay should be specified in the employment contract or in a paid overtime policy, even if it is to confirm that no overtime will be paid. Your employer should also be mindful that a written contract can be varied by an oral agreement. Therefore, if a written contract states that you will not be paid for any overtime worked, but you are then told by your manager
that you will receive extra pay, then it is possible that the verbal agreement will become binding. In a recent case the employment tribunal had to decide whether an employee was entitled to paid overtime for the additional time it took him to open and shut the store when the store manager was away. His employment contract did not mention anything about overtime. However, the employer did have a separate paid overtime policy. The employee issued a claim for £1,780 in lost wages for the additional hours worked. He was successful. The tribunal held that a term would be implied into his contract that he was entitled to payment for the additional time spent opening and closing the store, especially as there was an overtime scheme in place. However, the tribunal only awarded him £1,019. He was not entitled to be paid for the other jobs he undertook after closing the store, such as cleaning as this task could have been undertaken during the working day. n

“I do sometimes get mocked for liking jigsaw puzzles” my friends – even if it’s just for a coffee, I love watching the Cardiff Devils play at the Viola Arena, and from time to time I do love a bath. I do sometimes get mocked for liking jigsaw puzzles though…not very cool is it?
SOPHIE GARROD The communications assistant at Wales Millennium Centre shares her love of hats, jigsaws and Canton, and her dislike of DIY Sophie was born and raised in South London and came to Cardiff in 2015 for university to study journalism, media and cultural studies. She is a theatre blogger and reviewer on her website OneWomanWestEndShow. She also has the enviable job of being the marketing and communications assistant at Wales Millennium Centre. Tell us a little more about this amazing job of yours… I’ve always been a huge fan of the theatre so being able to work at the National Arts Centre for Wales is an absolute dream come true. I assist on marketing campaigns for the big shows we have in the Donald Gordon Theatre as well as our smaller seasons.
With all that going on, how do you find time to write your blog? I started the blog during university as a space to share my passion and it’s grown since then. It takes a lot of time to maintain both the social media side and the actual content for the site, but I absolutely love it. I write in-depth pieces about social issues within the theatre – such as race and racial casting, and last year I conducted some interviews to write a series on disability in theatre. I also write top-tips, fun listicles, opinion pieces and reviews. What’s your spare time hobbies, if indeed you do get any spare time? I enjoy going to the gym in Cardiff Bay, I cherish nothing more than spending time with

Whereabouts in Cardiff do you live? I live in Canton, which I truly believe is the best part of Cardiff. There are wonderful markets, indie coffee shops and eateries hidden in every nook and cranny. Who would you invite to your dream dinner party? Samantha Barks is my favourite theatre performer and my idol so definitely her. David Attenborough, as well as Morgan Freeman and Stephen Chbosky – the author of my favourite book The Perks of Being a Wallflower. When did you last cry, and can you tell us why? It sounds really stupid. I have a canvas on my living room wall with a lot of theatre memorabilia on it and sometimes I add new bits to it. I’d taken it down and put it on the living room floor to add some more to it and my boyfriend didn’t see it and stepped on it. Luckily only on the edge but I still shed a tear or two. What job in particular would you be terrible at? Anything DIY. Engineer, builder, plumber, that kind of thing. Having said that, I haven’t ever actually tried banging a nail into a wall. What’s on your bookshelf at the moment? Recent reads include Kindered by
Octavia E. Butler, A Boy Made of Blocks by Keith Stuart and This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay. I’ve just started Little Women by Louisa M. Alcott now. I read a lot, and everyday on the way to work. Who’s your celebrity crush? Ooh just the one? Then James McAvoy is definitely up there, but along with Jude Law. Which piece of music would you put on at the end of a trying day to cheer you up? Ed Sheeran probably. He’s got a song for every mood and always does the trick. What’s your favourite piece of clothing? I am a hat person. Baseball caps, winter bobble hats, summer hats, any hat. I love hats! What’s your favourite childhood memory? We used to go to the South of France every year to a villa painted all in pink, which my brother and I called The Pink House. I remember driving up to it at the beginning of the holiday and barely being able to contain my excitement as I saw the pink walls peeping through the trees. Favourite places to eat/ drink and shop in Cardiff? The Bee and Honey in Canton is my favourite brunch place. I’ve also discovered The Lazy Leek in Kings Yard in Pontcanna.
