The Welsh arts festival Tafwyl festival

T

he festival issue is one of my very favourites to put together. I love a festival. I love the music, the mud, the sleeping in tents, the lack of clock-watching. I love eating a Goan fish curry sitting on the grass. I love wandering into a tent and becoming enrapt in a scientific discussion about whether ghosts exist. I don’t mind the rain, which is lucky as my favourite festival in the whole wide world, Green Man, has its own Brecon Beacons micro-climate.

For 12 glorious years I have been to Green Man, it’s the hardy perennial in my life, unlike maybe the colour coral. It is Pantone’s Colour of 2019 and we speak to the experts to see what their professional take is on using this shade in our lives.

Elsewhere there’s summertime talk of dining outdoors in Cardiff, on our property pages we explore a beautiful seaside Penarth family home, that has us yearning for making that holiday feeling a full time way of life and making us go all gooey inside, two columnists, new mum Andrea Byrne and dad of three Nathan Palmer, have written Father Day specials for us.

Homeless World Cup

THE BEAUTIFUL GAME

More than 500 players representing over 50 countries will travel to Cardiff on 27 July to play in the week-long festival of football, The Homeless World Cup. The Cardiff 2019 bid was led by Welsh actor and activist Michael Sheen, who says bringing the Homeless World Cup to Wales is “a real dream come true for me. All round the world I’ve seen how football can play a massive part in helping people transform their lives, bring some joy and hope when things seem at their worst or just help to get you through a day. This summer Cardiff will host a celebration of what can bring us all together.”

Since the first tournament in Graz, Austria in 2003, it is estimated more than one million people worldwide have had their lives positively impacted by the tournament and its programmes. The organisers are working with Cymorth Cymru, the umbrella body for Wales’ homelessness sector, and the event, which is free to attend, will showcase Welsh music on Green Man-organised stage. There will also be a debate tent hosted in collaboration with the independent think tank The Bevan Foundation.

RAISED VOICES A thousand children from 36 schools across South Wales, including eight from Cardiff, will be taking part in a musical extravaganza at the Motorpoint Arena supported by a host of celebrity acts and professional musicians. The Beyond Words concert, now in its sixth year, will

be based on the song A Million Dreams from the musical movie The Greatest Showman.

Paul Zerdin, a British comedian, ventriloquist, and the winner of America’s Got Talent in 2015, is a patron of Beyond Words and will be performing at the concert on 15 July. He says, “It’s terrific

being involved with a project that can really reach out and have such a positive effect on young people. Also being a ventriloquist, I have more than one voice which does help make up the thousand voices.”

Scouts

BEST FOOT FORWARD

Scouts from Cardiff took part in a worldwide hike over the weekend to coincide with National Walking Month and joined 11,000 scouts from all over the world including Finland, Czech Republic, Canada, Australia and Argentina. Over 350 Scouts of all ages took part in the Jamboree On The Trail (JOTT), with 80 Scouts from 2nd Llandaff walking a five-mile circular route around the Wenallt in north Cardiff.

Mark Powell, cub leader from 2nd Llandaff, says, “This is our third year participating in the walk; our walkers range from four years old to 75, and this year our eldest walker took part again which was brilliant to see. We encourage people of all ages to get involved as it is such a great activity, many also bring their dogs along too.”

THIS DIAMOND IS FOREVER

Dame Shirley Bassey, who was born in Tiger Bay and grew up in Splott, was awarded the freedom of Cardiff at a special ceremony at City Hall on 17 May. The singer, who has sold more than 135 million records over seven decades, was nominated for the award by council leaders who said it is in recognition of her ‘service to Cardiff, Wales and her patronage of the Noah’s Ark Charity and of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.’

Dame Shirley told crowds outside that “Cardiff especially” was important to her, and the award was “up there with becoming a Dame.

It’s probably more so, because not many people get freedom of the city.

There are a lot of Dames around.”

After the ceremony, which she walked in to to a band playing Goldfinger, Dame Shirley said, “It was so emotional. I said I wasn’t going to cry and I did. When they were reading [my achievements] all out that was it. I was like ‘did I do all that?’”

Cardiff council leader Huw Thomas said at the event. “Her voice has provided the soundtrack to key moments in the life of our city and of our nation.”

Freedom of the city is the highest honour the city can bestow on an individual and was first awarded in 1886. Other recipients of the award include Nelson Mandela and Princess Diana.

Seeing over 15,000 people come together to peacefully march and party through the streets of Cardiff’s city centre was simply spectacular. However, dancing to We are Family with Courtney Act and my Pride Cymru family, is a close second.

Looking forward to this year: I am excited to dance to Gok Wan’s DJ set and also seeing Welsh singer Shellyann Evans’ performance.

Will be eating and drinking: Last year I practically lived at this amazing Caribbean stand which was 100 per cent vegan. Drinks-wise it’ll be anything non-alcoholic, most likely water as I’ll be rushing around from dawn to dusk.

Will be visiting: I’ll definitely visit the dog show, we’re very lucky Dogs Trust is supporting us.

Best festival tip: Biodegradable glitter is this year’s must have, along with water and sunblock. Also we put great emphasis on being inclusive and accessible for all. If you want to come to Pride Cymru then you should be able to. There will be BSL interpreters, 2-4-1 access tickets, dedicated disabled facilities, a disabled viewing platform for the main stage and a ‘quiet area’ for anyone who needs a break.

“This is as close to nature as a festival can get” be a highlight this year, they were fab at Newport Rising Festival and I’ll also be heading over to catch the Ska Monkeys.

Will be eating: I do love Mexican so you will likely see me queueing for ThatStreetFood and no doubt I’ll be indulging in a slice of pizza from the Welsh Italian Pizza co. I also know that Chock Shop is having a stall with their amazing calorific brownies.

Will be visiting: For me it’s the Pixies Wardrobe for a floral hair crown.

For my daughter, The Slime Factory stall and Hula Hoop workshop.

Best festival tip: Remember the poncho and the wet wipes. And take a camping chair – you won’t regret it.

has been given major event status by the Welsh Government due to the festival’s positive impact and wealth creation

What they say: Fiona Stewart owner and managing director of Green Man Last year’s highlight: Philadelphia’s The War on Drugs performance definitely blew us all away and proved why they sell out venues all over the world. Australian band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard who had their first headline performance, and Cardiff’s own Boy Azooga were incredible.

Looking forward to most: I can’t wait to see Father John Misty, Four Tet, and Sharon Van Etten take to the Mountain Stage this year and of course the legendary Meic Stevens. Plus, uncovering amazing Welsh talent at The Settlement Stage, which showcases some of the most exciting emerging Welsh language acts around.

Will be eating: Starting the day with some delicious Mexican goodness from The Bearded Taco, swiftly followed by Mr Hippy’s gorgeous vegan ice cream. Plus our favourite local family butcher, Cashells will be offering homemade savoury delights. This will be washed down with Welsh ale, lager and cider at Courtyard, our very own Welsh Beer Festival, which hosts 150 different beverages brewed by 42 independent Welsh brewers.

Will be visiting: Einstein’s Garden science engagement area packed with interesting and quirky workshops, talks and shows.

The hidden arts trail in the woods is a lovely place to take a bit of time out and see some stunning arts installations.

Festival top tips: Try and get to the Green Man burn around midnight on Sunday to get the best view. Book in massages, hot tubs and yoga sessions at Nature Nurture on your first day as they get booked out.

I managed to get a prime spot for Goat Girl and Suuns.

I also loved staying up into the early hours of the morning losing myself in the sea of artists I hadn’t ever seen before.

Looking forward in 2019: We Were Promised Jetpacks, Black Country, New Road, and Hwr Doeth – the Caernarfon hip-hop collective, they are always a bit mad, unpredictable and tonnes of fun.

Will be fortifying self for the day with: I’ll start the day with the biggest breakfast I can order from Sully’s, then Hard Lines coffee will be keeping me energised throughout the day.

Best festival advice: Download our app and sort out your own schedule and route. Last year, my schedule clashed so much, I couldn’t visit every venue, so this year, ticking them all off will be my mission.

W

e did it! We smashed our £10,000 fundraising goal, and we are over the moon! Over recent months, we’ve been fundraising to help save St Andrew’s Church on Wellfield Road from closure. They needed the money for essential repairs including the roof, or else the doors would be shut. What made this so important to us, is that the building isn’t just about faith – it’s home to many community groups such Brownies, salsa dancing, Zumba, arts groups, and several self help groups too. It’s an amazing hub that serves a genuine social purpose and that’s why we felt so passionate about helping it.

Our latest event was the Roath Bake Off. The turn out was

exceptional and the event was full of celebrity judges including Chris Rankin who plays Harry Potter’s Percy Weasley, the Dirty Vegan himself Mathew Pritchard, and ITV weather girl, the very sunny Ruth Wignall. Over a hundred cakes were baked and entered, there were craft stalls and live music from the likes of Cardiff¹s Rock Choir, and we raised well of £1,000 that day taking our total to almost £11,000. A huge congratulations to Julie Heath who won the best overall cake award.

We were supposed to cut this up and sell it on for charity, but the judges didn’t give us the chance – it was so delicious they kept tasting it and before we could say, ‘Pass us the cake knife’, they’d eaten it all!

in Wrexham. Nathan gets invited along to make live art over the weekend of the attending stars, and this time is was bigger than ever. Meeting and chatting to the likes of Rupert Grint (it’s been a very Weasley-filled few weeks and our world is better for that kind of magic), Jennifer Morrison of Once Upon A Time, David Tennant and Kiefer Sutherland, was amazing.

The green room is such a surreal place when you’re making your morning coffee and your favourite vampire from your favourite movie The Lost Boys is stood behind you.

Just brilliant and every fan’s dream.

Nathan created art using things like fake blood, pizza, coffee and Rupert’s portrait using a collage of ginger items – and as a fellow ginger it was made with love.

Also full of love and truly beautiful moments was Swansea Pride, which made a comeback after a few years hiatus, and was sensational. Swansea’s biggest celebration of LGBTQ+ life was bigger than ever. We were invited by the wonderful drag artist Ruby Slippers to perform a few songs and we had a ball. We sang some Take That and Kylie Minogue... because, er, well why not? And then partied into the early hours, which as you may have gathered by now, is a speciality of ours!

Special guests included Shellyann Evans who has just won BBC1’s

singing competition Altogether Now and EastEnders’ Janine Butcher aka Charlie Brooks... we weren’t going near any steep Welsh mountains with her... remember what happened to poor Barry?!

The NHS annual charity bed push for the Health Charity returned to the barrage, and instead of taking part (last year Wayne nearly ended up in the water, because the wheel was dodgy, honest, it really was!), we were invited to host. Now that was a much easier job for us. What an incredible turn out once again and congrats all the people who took part, dressed up and decorated those beds so creatively.

Theatre wise, New Jersey Boys, which is a unique tribute to Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons, came to town and so rapturous was the response, it nearly took The New Theatre’s roof off. Our friends down at Maesteg Town Hall hosted an incredible evening with Britain’s Got Talent star La Voix, and boy that gal can sing! She’s a brilliant and upbeat mixture of old school cabaret, current pop songs, topical comedy, upbeat and proper funny, cheesy jokes. She stole the stage and stole our hearts.

Get Pretty Muddy in Cardiff A Cardiff nurse, who gives hope to patients taking part in cancer trials, is urging youngsters to sign up to Cancer Research UK’s Pretty Muddy Kids event in Cardiff

ay Wilson, a lead research nurse at Cardiff’s Velindre Hospital, is backing the event alongside her two children and her niece and nephew.

This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone – men, women and children – to join the Race for Life.

Pretty Muddy Kids is an exciting obstacle course designed just for children – with added mud, thrills and spills.

It will take place at Bute Park, Cardiff, on Saturday 6 July followed by the traditional 5K and 10K Pretty Muddy, which thousands of men and women will take part in.

By taking part in Pretty Muddy Kids, children in Cardiff can have fun with friends and help raise valuable funds to beat cancer at the same time. Money raised will help Cancer Research UK scientists find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease, helping save more lives.

Kay and her team of eight research nurses, some who are co-funded by Cancer Research UK, took part in the charity’s 5K Race for Life last year.

The mother of two is passionate about supporting Cancer Research UK as she sees the direct benefit of research by caring for patients taking part in clinical trials.

Kay, who has been a nurse for 18 years, says, “There is no greater feeling than seeing a patient responding well to a new treatment. For example, we are currently treating a 39-year-old woman who was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2016. She experienced a few failed treatments but started a phase 1 trial with us earlier this year and is responding well.

“Without the public’s support, we wouldn’t be able discover kinder and more effective

treatments for the future.

“That’s why we are urging boys and girls across Cardiff to take part in Pretty Muddy Kids.

Together, we can help beat this devastating disease.”

One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before.

Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress.

Did you like comics growing up?

I loved all the Marvels and I was really into all the Japanese animation stuff too. Spider-man was a major favourite though – a young person with super powers fighting crime, what’s not to love?

Any books that scared you?

The Haunted Mask, and A Night in Terror Tower, part of The Goosebumps series by RL Stine really scared me and has left me with a fear of china dolls and puppets! I hate them!

Your desert island book?

The Kingkiller Chronicle fantasy series by Patrick Rothfuss, which tells the story of Kvothe, an adventurer and musician.

Book or e-reader?

Got to be a book. No contest.

Mica Moore, is a champion bobsleigher and sprinter Can you remember the first book ever read to you?

The Last Noo Noo by Jill Murphy, about a baby dragon who had a dummy (noo noo) and grew a noo noo tree. I had a dummy growing up and I loved the book because the dragon was proud of his bad habit like me, and it even inspired me to grow my own tree.

I absolutely loved anything by Jacqueline Wilson but especially Tracy Beaker.

Did you enjoy comics?

I used to make my mum and dad get the Sunday Times so that I could read the children’s paper at the back. And I loved getting the Christmas Beano and Dandy annuals.

Any childhood books that have influenced your taste now?

I really enjoyed Goosebumps growing up, and I think that’s what encouraged my present day love of horror films.

Do you read many sporting books?

At the moment I’m actually reading a book on motivation in sport, to help with my summer competitions. Good books like that help when I’m struggling in training.

What’s on your must-read list?

Many people have recommended Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari.

The story of Guto Nyth Brân, the18th century legendary Welsh athlete, and also the folk-tale of the faithful hound Gelert, both read to me by my grandparents.

The Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton, about a huge tree inhabited by fairy-folk.

What’s your first book-related memory?

I remember my mother reading The Little House on the Prairie to me as a little boy.

What did you love to read as a teen?

I loved books by Barry Crump, a New Zealand author. My favourite was Wild Pork and Watercress.

Any books you didn’t like?

I remember I was petrified of The Famous Five for some reason!

Your go-to cheer-up book?

Well, I’m a bit fan of Western books so I would go for The Complete Western Stories by Elmore Leonard. I also love How the West Was Won by Louis L’Amour, the epic tale of a family of settlers in America.

What’s the one book you want to share with all your friends?

Mr Nice, the autobiography of Howard Marks who went to Oxford University, and became an international drug smuggler.

I wanted to be Gerry and have animals all over the house but it hasn’t happened – yet!

Your desert island book?

Pride and Prejudice – Jane Austen all the way.

Favourite book memory?

As a child I wrote to Alexander Cordell the author of Rape of the Fair Country set during the Industrial Revolution. He took the time to write back and his letters were fantastic. He then dedicated his first children’s book, The White Cockade written in 1970, to me.

IN THE BEGINNING It’s a series of beautiful firsts from Jemima for new parents Andrea and Lee

M

iss Jemima Hazel Rhona Byrne has (at the time of going to press) just reached three months in this world. And as Jemima grows, so does our relationship with her. She’s getting more alert and active by the day. Everything feels like we are embarking on an exciting journey of ‘firsts’.

We’ve already had our first smile, which came just in time to pose for her first passport photo. And with my first Mother’s Day already under my belt, it’s dad’s turn now to celebrate and Jemima is now able to babble her very own unique Father’s Day greeting to Lee, as

she gifts him with another of her meltingly gorgeous grins.

As she engages more and more with us everyday, instead of discovering new ways to stop her from crying, it’s more about finding how best to entertain her and teach her a little about her surroundings. For me – the newsreader and journalist of two decades – writing headlines and chasing stories has given way to the likes of Monkey Music sessions and baby yoga classes! And it’s incredible that the thrill I get after a busy live news programme can be achieved in equal, if not greater, measure by watching my lovely baby girl shake some mini maracas and ring a bell.

Our activity programme has also included getting back in shape. After nine months of pregnancy and a couple of months of recovery from an emergency C-section, I have been cleared by the doctor for exercise and my body is relieved to be feeling some fitness vibes once again.

When the Merthyr Mawr sand dunes, with its notorious Big Dipper, are just down the road and your husband is an ex-rugby international, it’s fair to say

the training programme hasn’t started lightly! Our schnauzers, Hank, Marcy and Doug, now have some new company on their hikes as Jemima is proving to be the perfect package to add some weight to a training session. She has taken to the baby carrier (one of our best buys) like a kangaroo to a pouch and whilst we trek up and down, she uses the opportunity to be rocked to sleep for an afternoon siesta. Everyone’s a winner!

It’s fair to say that with her activity diary ever-expanding, so is her wardrobe. A little girl can’t go

walking without a choice of sun hats, of course, and a selection of leggings are a staple for even the tiniest of yogis. Next up, we’ll have to focus on a baby’s capsule holiday wardrobe, as she embarks on her first family trip abroad.

Yes, passport in tiny hand, she’ll be packing her bag and checking in for her first flight. And you can check in with my next column for my top tips on travelling with an infant under one. Wish us luck!

The current executive director, Paul Cooper recalls his first day of employment at the original site, “It was a dank miserable morning in Merthyr, I parked up outside what can only be described as a grotty old garage and I remember questioning whether I’d made the best career choice! At that time, we only had two staff, two paying customers, and five products to offer so it was fair to say that things could only get better… we just embraced the challenge.”

Today, it’s apparent that Orthotix have upscaled their operations significantly. Employing 20 staff they are now an accredited NHS supplier of a diverse range of orthotic products encompassing all regions of the body from head to toe. They distribute over 500 medically approved products, with many manufactured in the UK and others sourced from market leading global partners.

This quirky little building in Victoria Park had been dilapidated for many years until its conversion in 2018 and now specialises in coffee, cake and cava.

The rear terrace is small but perfectly formed, with views of splendid park laid out before you. It can seat about 30 people and is dog and child friendly. On chillier days there are blankets available for customers and there are plans to install outside heaters to keep the evening dining happening for longer. Also in the pipeline are pop up events with guest chefs and comedy nights, making this a buzzing go-to al fresco community hub.

I

’m going out for pasta. I’ll be honest, usually, for such an event I’m not wondering what to wear, or whether I should get my hair done nor am I Googling the venue’s menu beforehand.

Sometimes going out for pasta is a bit ‘meh’.

A bowl of pale tubes in an insipid ketchup-like sauce and you think, ‘I could’ve had this at home.’ It’s the equivalent of going on holiday and then staying in your hotel room to watch Netflix. There’s no adventure to it, no sense of ‘we’re worth-it inspiration’, it’s simply pasta and we’re over it.

But this time I’m going out for pasta at Piatto, and this is no ordinary, hum-drum pasta place. Founded by restaurant legend Giovanni Malacrino, who has been feeding the capital city for 35 years via Park Place and The Hayes, which claim to be the original and oldest family-run Italian restaurants in Wales. Famous for glamorous, old-school Italian vibes, and having fed everyone from Ed Sheeran to Luciano Pavarotti, already the Piatto credentials are sounding pretty bella bella.

This is also a venture with Giovanni’s son, the LA-based actor Luca, who has added a touch of Hollywood to the former Caffi Sïo site. In 2016, the former St David’s

Catholic College pupil was in a film with the awardwinning Francis Ford Coppola, when the director gave him a brilliant tip. “He said,” explains Luca, “it was always a good idea to be in business and keep acting as a passion, no matter how successful you become.”

On arrival at the striking glass-fronted building and terrace on Lloyd George Avenue, it is evident there is also passion, energy and imagination invested in this swish, chic, and stylish little restaurant. Designer Henry Craven helped Luca create an ultra-industrial meets almost tropical-botanical space with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Wales Millennium Centre and drinking in delicious views of the Bay. Thought has also been applied to the layout, where the split level restaurant has been designed around a social dining concept, which means diners are encouraged to stop scrolling and start talking. Each three-tier table in Piatto faces the WMC, and seating is at a diagonal angle to encourage conversation – there’s even a slot within each table for diners to deposit their phones. Luca says, “Food is an art, it’s a way of bringing people together and I’m fed up of going into a restaurant and seeing everyone on their phones.

“Growing up, eating meant lively conversation around a table, everyone chipping in with something to say. I think it’s so important that we don’t lose that.”

Back to that pasta then. Surely all this talk means this is going to be style over substance, gnocchi with gimmick?

Piatto, which means plate in Italian, serves 10 different types of pasta which can be added to the different, all delicious sounding sauces, so we let the lovely Massimo be our guide to the best combos. Immediately we’re all talking, and not mulling over our choices in silence.

First up is a platter of crispy, sea-fresh calamari that does not chew or pull, but softly bites and are even more gorgeous when dredged through the deeply garlicky mayo. There’s been a major buzz about the house speciality, a parmesan edible cheese bowl (there is a vegan option available) so how could we not try this?

I confess there is a sneaking out of the phones for its arrival, with this golden cheesy basket getting a lot of social Insta Love. The contents get a lot of instant love from me. The beads of al dente trofi are generously coated in the ragu di beef e Barolo, which is made up of plentiful nuggets of locally sourced, slowly cooked beef, pungent and rich with Barado full-bodied wine, and a smoky, deep tomato sauce. My companion’s zucchini e gamberi, which contains sweet and plump king prawns, wisps of aromatic herbs, and chunky cubes of gardenfresh courgettes, all with a buttery, olive oil sheen and poured over tagliatelle pasta, is a triumph. The sort of dish that lingers on in the memory and on the palate.

Pudding is the sweet treat of chocolate sauce and hazelnuts on a pizza base. They only do sweet pizzas and once you try it, you realise no other pizza will do. Thanks to the bright, breezy and bold décor, the incredible views and the delightfully charming Piatto team, it’s been easy to click into the chat, dine and smile vibe. But it’s also helped us see pasta in a whole new sunny light. n

For the first time in the history of The London Pizza Festival, a pizzeria from outside of London, Ffwrnes Pizza from Cardiff, is competing. Founded by Jez Phillips and Ieuan Harry in 2014, Ffwrnes (Welsh for ‘furnace’) has won Best Pizza in the 2017 Welsh Italian Food Awards, competed at the Pizza World Championship in Parma in April 2018, and in August last year set up their first permanent pizza place at Cardiff Market.

Ieuan says, “The support we’ve had since setting up Ffwrnes has been incredible, so we think it’s only right that we give something back to our customers. It’s going to be a pretty brilliant May, culminating in a true first at London Pizza Festival.”

The London Pizza Festival will be held at Borough Market, London on 2 June.

A GOOD START The people of Cardiff are being encouraged to Wake Up To Organic on 12 June, with the offer of free mini breakfasts. An international conference Dr Claire focusing on how food can Havenbe used to develop a more Tang hospitable society is to be held in Wales for the first time. The International Conference on Culinary Arts and Sciences (ICCAS) will be hosted by Cardiff Metropolitan University on 27 – 28 June. Topics discussed will include food supply chains and society’s role in facing evolving health challenges.

THE CITY AND THE IVY It’s been an on off relationship, but the latest news is it’s back on. The Ivy Collection is planning to open in Cardiff, after it was revealed Troia Restaurants Limited who own the classic group of luxe restaurants, brasseries and cafés, which specialise in modern British food, has applied for a premise licence for alcohol and music on The Hayes site.

have a five year old child from a relationship which ended two years ago. Whilst our separation was amicable, we’ve had little success in determining the child arrangements and it seems like my former partner is contesting every facet of the children’s lives.

Last year, with the help of mediation, we were able to make some progress with the living arrangements for the children, including the arrangements for the holidays.

Based on that agreement I had expected to have children from the date that they finish school in the summer holidays. My partner does not agree to that date, however, arguing that inset days (which usually bookend a holiday period) are within term-time and not school holidays. Is this correct?

A: The local authority has responsibility for determining, and publicising, information relating to the term-time periods for schools. These can

usually be found on the local authority website but are often also published by the individual schools.

Calendaring of inset (or training) days, however, is for the individual school to determine and the details are often not published until long after the local authority has published details of term-time periods.

Inset days are scheduled within the term-time and, therefore, whilst they can bookend a school holiday, strictly form part of the school term. This is, often, not an issue, but can be tricky when school holidays start on Tuesday, with an inset day on a Monday.

Whilst in many instances matters often work themselves out, with parents agreeing to a ‘common sense’ approach, this is, regrettably, not always possible. In cases where your partner is likely to be difficult, in reaching an agreement it is important to think about, agree, the detail in advance. n

e live in the generation of the ‘Insta smile’ where taking selfies is a common trend seen all over social media.

With social media being such a key role in daily life, it has come as no surprise that having the perfect smile is becoming so popular.

Having whiter teeth is one of the most asked for requests dental practitioners get on a daily basis from patients, and now with the use of whitening, bonding, veneers, and other restorative processes, such as the Airflow, we are able to achieve whiter looking teeth for that lovely ‘Insta smile.’

The reason for teeth staining comes down to lifestyle and daily wear and tear. Tea and coffee are the usual culprits. This is due to an ingredient called tannin. Other common causes of staining can be red wine, berries, enamel wear and certain medications. There are two types of staining that can occur on your teeth. They are:

EXTRINSIC STAINING This refers to staining on the tooth surface (enamel). This is yellow in colour and is easily removed by professional stain removal.

INTRINSIC STAINING

Many people attempt to whiten their teeth at home with home remedies such as bicarbonate of soda with lemon or whitening/ charcoal toothpastes. These should be avoided. Not only do they not work, they are highly abrasive.

This can result in tooth wear leading to dentine sensitivity. They can also scratch and damage the enamel making the surface rough. This can result in more stain sticking to the tooth surface than before.

This refers to staining on the inner layer of teeth (dentine). This is much harder to resolve and is usually treated by the dentist.

AIRFLOW

Finding out the type of stain that is present on your teeth is important. This allows the dental practitioner to discuss treatment options and outcomes. There are many ways to prevent staining from sticking to your teeth: • Visit your dentist or hygienist regularly.

• Reduce your coffee/tea consumption and duration you are drinking them.

• Use a straw while drinking drinks known to stain teeth.

• Rinse your mouth with water after drinking tea/coffee.

• Maintain good oral hygiene.

Airflow is a safe and minimally invasive treatment which removes surface stain, young calculus and biofilm from teeth with the use of water, air and erythritol and sodium bicarbonate based powder. Erythritol contains antibacterial properties which help prevent the adhesion of plaque to the tooth surface, therefore, helping to prevent further stain building up between hygienist visits.

The results of airflow are fast! They can be achieved in just one visit to your hygienist. Air flow is cheaper than whitening.

Teeth whitening can be used after airflow to achieve an even whiter smile. There are two

options available under the prescription of a dentist. In surgery whitening, which takes an hour, can make your teeth up to six shades whiter, or home whitening which will whiten your teeth gradually over a two-week period.

I

have recently styled new people, reached new audiences, and stepped out of my comfort zone.

Mathew Prichard, famous skateboarder and triathlete, rocked one of my jackets for the first Dirty Vegan cookbook. Callum Daniel aka @icoderobots, the 10 year old genius and CEO of iCodeRobots and official LEGO YouTube presenter, wore a tailored suit for the Screen Nation Awards.

A bright lad in one of my bright suits – what an honour. I was even more proud when he also appeared in my one of my suits on the red carpet of the première of Aladdin, where he met and was photographed with stars such as Will Smith and Guy Ritchie.

I always find it fascinating and exciting to venture into new horizons and create custom garments for customers passionate about what they do.

I have designed sportswear before with Welsh boxer’s Lee Selby’s fight shorts, and more recently was tasked with the honour of creating an equestrian jacket when I made a custom piece for dressage trainer Shelly Harriss.

Back in April I judged Miss Wales at the Riverfront in Newport. It was a privilege to be a judge in a national competition, surrounded by people who love and respect fashion and integrity.

Congratulations to Gabriella Jukes for winning the crown and good luck at the Miss World Thailand in November and December to represent Wales.

My suits also took part in two recent photoshoots as well, both at Tredillion Park with See & Sky Photography, on the 2 and 29 of April. The photos will be featured on the Tredillion website, the National Wedding Blog and in multiple wedding magazines. Weddings are one of the most magical events one could experience in life, and to be a part of that, in a way that is commemorated forever through photographs and memories, makes what I do worthwhile.

But there was another reason I loved doing this, the photos featured both my sons. Every part of my work helps me grow as a person, and as a stylist. However one of the most important aspects of my job is making my children, Monaco, 10 years old,

While I admit, it is hard at times to balance my work and business with being a dad, it doesn’t stop me striving to be the best father I can possibly be.

By working in such a creative career, I hope to encourage individuality and allow them to create their own personalities.

They will also, hopefully, be just as creative as me, or more so even.

As a parent, I worry a lot about them, and I still want to coddle and protect them.

But I have come to learn that stepping back will allow them to grow into a better version of themselves. I will always push them to follow their dreams – I didn’t follow a stereotypical, scientific route, so why should my children? As cheesy as it sounds, I just want them to love what they’re doing, and for it to fulfill them as much as possible. Where there’s a will... ...there’s often a lot of confusion. CJCH SOLICITORS help explain some of the jargon, terms and legal issues surrounding wills, and also how it might directly affect you

What is an executor of a will?

An executor of a will is the person or persons responsible for ensuring that a person’s estate is administered according to the contents of their will. The executor(s) will be able close your bank accounts, sell your property and pay any bills after you have died.

How should I choose the executor of my will?

The executor(s) should be someone you trust who is willing to take up the role. It is quite common for people to name beneficiaries as executors as well.

What is probate?

Probate is the act of applying for the legal right to deal with a person’s estate either when someone doesn’t have a will or if someone has a will but their estate is over a certain financial threshold. The threshold can depend on the type and size of the assets in the estate.

How long does it take?

This can depend on the nature of the estate as before you can apply for probate you need to get accurate valuations for all assets including savings and property and any debts owed by a person’s estate.

Once all that information is available an application can be submitted to your local probate registry.

How do I know if I have to get probate?

When you contact the various banks and companies that hold assets for a person they will be able to tell you whether you require probate or not as their internal rules vary. If you need to sell or transfer a property in an estate you will usually need to apply for probate first but there can some times be exceptions if the property was owned jointly.

A will is a document which is put into place during your lifetime which stipulates inter alia who you would like to inherit your possessions, property and monies when you pass away. You are also able to provide your wishes on funeral arrangements and guardianship of any minor children.

Why do I need a will?

If there is no will in place then you may find that your wishes are not carried out when you pass away.

At what age should I make a will?

There is no set age at which you should write a will. Some of the instances where you should consider writing a will are when you purchase a property or when you have assets which you would like to be passed to a certain person or when you have children.

Do I need to change my will if I marry or get divorced?

Marriage will automatically revoke any existing will and assume that you wish to leave all assets to your spouse, which is not always the case and so it is important to implement a will at this stage. On divorce it is important that you review your will arrangements as depending on what the previous arrangements were you may find that your wishes are not now correctly reflected.

What will happen if I die without a will?

The intestacy rules will come into effect. These are rules which govern who should instead inherit your estate which can sometimes result in your property or possessions not going to the beneficiary which you would have intended.

What should be included in a will? Is there anything specific that should be focused on?

Important factors to consider would be the appointment of your executor, trustee and any guardian together with any specific gifts of money or items of sentiment of value that you may wish to leave to someone.

What is your role?

I’m a general practitioner, and cover all aspects of general practice. In a nutshell, my work can include; check ups, emergency appointments, fixing and replacing teeth, and treating gum conditions. I also take referrals for sedation and extractions.

What key bit of advice would you give to somebody considering finding a dentist?

Whether you go NHS or private, or whether you see a general practitioner, or a specialist for particular work that you want doing, I certainly would recommend asking your dentist what options there are for various treatments. I’m always open for patients to seek second opinions or to refer to specialists for specific work.

What is your favourite part of the job?

Having happy and satisfied patients is really important to me. It’s really nice when you can turn things around for a patient, going from them first coming to the practice dreading something, but then eventually getting to a stage where they’re really comfortable coming to the practice.

What do you think is the biggest misconception surrounding dentistry?

This might not be a misconception, but something that isn’t well enough known is the recommendation to not rinse your toothbrush or your mouth with water during, or after brushing your teeth, ‘spit don’t rinse’! The aim of toothbrushing is to coat the teeth in fluoride from the toothpaste and rinsing will dilute or remove the fluoride.

Fluoride is essential to avoid decay if you are eating a Western diet.

Describe what it is you do?

My working week is spent providing dental implant and oral surgery care to patients across South Wales at clinics that I visit in the Swansea, Cardiff and Newport areas.

How long have you been working with dental implants?

I have been placing dental implants for 13 years with over 98.5% success and it is a subject I am very passionate about.

What is it you like about working with dental implants?

I love seeing how dental implants can be used to help improve patients’ lives; be it allowing them to chew the foods they want to eat, smile for selfies again and feel confident in social situations or to be able to throw away the denture glue!

You seem to have travelled a lot for study, what was that like?

I have attended Universities in England, Scotland, Wales, Switzerland, Australia, and the USA, and been lucky enough to combine my love of travel with a love of studying. This has allowed me to accumulate a large amount of training and experience which I can then pass on to my patients.

What advice would you give to patients looking to have dental implants?

Three factors contribute to the predictable long-term success of any implant treatment.

1. The quality of the implant componentry used.

2. The experience and training of the surgeon.

3. The quality of the laboratory work used. Choose where you have treatment wisely as compromising with any 3 of these factors can create expensive problems to fix.

Our local dentist was a family friend and she first got me interested in general dentistry. Once I’d qualified, I was lucky enough to get a place on a three year master’s programme in orthodontics.

It was a natural progression I guess because I wanted to know how to produce that perfect smile.

Did you always want to be a dentist?

No. I grew up on a farm and in my early years, farming was my passion.

How would you best define modern dentistry?

‘Hi-tech’. I would apply this to dentistry in general, and orthodontics in particular. There are so many techniques available to treat patients that specialists now devote a great deal of time researching, and talking patients through all the treatment options available to them. There is no one treatment fits all because everyone is different.

What have been your career highlights so far?

Definitely getting my stripes and qualifying at the Royal College of Surgeons as a bona fide orthodontist.

How long have you worked at your current practice?

I’ve been practising in Llanishen now for 20 years, but it’s passed so quickly.

Describe your ideal day...

Getting to work with no traffic and plenty of time to spare. Having my usual team around me, plenty of time for my patients, and getting home from work with no traffic, and plenty of time to spare.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

The outcome. For me the day we complete treatment is the culmination of the time and effort spent in order to get that smile right.

How do you spend your time at work?

I would say about 20 per cent of my time is administrative and the other 80 per cent clinical.

Most forward-thinking practices invest a lot of time planning and developing to provide their

patients with the best they can. We couldn’t do any of that without a great team. A lot of our staff have extended their roles in the practice and sat additional exams whilst with us. I think if your staff feel valued, the workplace is a happy one.

Why do you think some people are scared of going to the dentist?

Believe it or not, I think that perception is changing. Explanation is the key, and talking patient’s through procedures is really important to us. As orthodontists we treat children and adults, and the one thing that puts any patient at ease is feeling they have control of a situation. I think the profession has become more empathetic.

Were you good at brushing your teeth as a child?

In the main I was pretty good. But as with a lot of children I had moments when my behaviour was far from perfect, and the tooth-brushing was probably similar.

What are you like as a patient?

You might be better off asking my dentist.

As a child I was a bit anxious but had really good care, and that might have coloured my career choice in some way. As an adult I feel that I am in really good hands and that gives me confidence when I make my annual visits.

When did you last visit the dentist?

Last week actually. I got a thumbs up thank goodness!

How would you best define modern dentistry?

Dentistry is such a fast-moving profession. There are advances pretty much every day. Keeping up and making sure we are always able to offer the best to our patients is key. People want beautiful teeth, and it’s our job to make sure they aren’t just beautiful, but also comfortable, healthy and will last you your lifetime.

How do you spend your time at work?

Apart from the obvious, we are very keen that we build great relationships with our patients, so actually I spend a lot of time chatting and getting to know them better. Our ethos is to treat the person, not just the teeth.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

There’s nothing like seeing a patient, who previously hated their teeth, beaming at you with renewed confidence. That is everything in this job.

When did you last visit the dentist?

We have a peek at each other’s teeth every year, but I love getting my teeth professionally cleaned, if one of our hygiene team has a free appointment, I’m straight in the chair!

What’s your favourite sweet thing?

Simple pleasures are my thing, I’m not into posh chocolates to be honest. I love Maltesers. They have to be in a box though, I love the noise they make rolling around.

How would you best define modern dentistry?

It’s about treating the whole person, not just filling holes in teeth. I do lots of aesthetic treatments, like anti-wrinkle injections and lip fillers. Little tweaks added here and there, on top of a great smile that can complete the picture.

How might you describe what you do?

It’s all about taking time, understanding individual needs and offering what each patient wants to achieve. Not everyone wants a Hollywood smile and we always champion great health as a first priority.

What aspect of your work is most rewarding?

I love it when we’ve worked with super nervous people and get them to a point, where they wander in for treatment, as if it’s nothing more stressful than nipping out for a pint of milk. Those days, I go home xxxxxxxxxxx a happy dentist.

What have been your career highlights so far?

Having owned our practice for 12 years now, we love building relationships with our patients and their families. It’s very rewarding looking after a pre-school child all the way through to them leaving for university.

When did you last visit the dentist?

Vic looks after my teeth and I do hers, it means we make sure to keep a regular eye on our own mouths.

What’s your favourite sugary treat?

It’s very rare for me to have sweet things but my weakness would probably be a milkshake as a treat after a long race.

OPENED MINDED Open University celebrates its 50 years in Wales

T

he Open University in Wales has began a year-long celebration to commemorate its 50 year anniversary.

The Cardiff headquarters will host the archive exhibition titled The Open University: 50 years spanning historic photographs as well as ten students shot by photographer Chris Floyd.

Felix Asare-Donkoh (above) is one of the 213,863 students to have benefited from the OU and was photographed by Chris Floyd.

He was able to graduate with a BEng Honours degree whilst being stationed away from his Cardiff home. He says, “What I’ve achieved would have been impossible without the OU. The flexibility and support they offered me meant I didn’t have to choose between my career and my education.

“Because of that I was able to get hands-on, practical experience in the armed forces that has been incredibly relevant to my degree.”

Louise Casella, director of the OU in Wales, says, “As well as

looking back and celebrating all of those who have shaped the OU into what it is today, we’re also looking forward to the future and how we can continually innovate and provide open learning opportunities to all.”

Thanks! It’s not our first dance with Cardiff Life, the company has received the prestigious award before in 2014, but it’s the first time with the current team.

Talk us through the build up to the Awards ceremony...

The days leading up were more filled with conversation of what we were going to wear and imbibe throughout the evening, with nerves not really coming into play until the night itself. As friends and colleagues dotted around the hall hear their name called out or not, you can’t help but share in their elation or disappointment, it’s infectious.

What was it like when you won…?

As our category was announced I imagine the most nervous person in the room had to be the near stranger to my left, unaware where the red wine situated in my firmly grasped hand might end up. Thankfully he was safe, the euphoria of hearing one’s name read out lead to subsequent fist pumping, shouting and photos where once again the

It was something that had dominated our team meetings for months and disturbed our slumber for days.

Celebrations weren’t muted. After a few, maybe several, glasses of champagne we headed back to our bar to celebrate with the rest of the team unable to attend. We were joined by numerous friends in the industry who passed on their congratulations as we spilled and sipped on yet more fizzy French wines.

Can you talk us through awardwinning cocktails please?

Happily! Our drinks menu, of which we’re incredibly proud, has received more than its fair share of local and national praise. We’ve been fortunate enough to receive Imbibe’s Themed Drinks List of the Year award for our current signature menu, beating bars from around the UK. What’s the bestseller?

The most popular libation would be Cloning Unicorns. A house blend of Finlandia vodka, raspberry, rose, vanilla and apple, make this accessible drink both seem new and familiar. Add a glittery dusting of imagination and you’re onto a winner. We’ve seen re-creations attempted around many fellow Cardiff bars, but never quite to the same perfection. ...and what’s your own current favourite cocktail?

Lab 22 does more than just serve drinks though doesn’t it?

We do a lot of event work through which we always reach out to local independent business for mutual support. Our charity work always seeks to benefit Wales and the Welsh experience. Our menu curation and sourcing is ever more ethical and sustainable. We’re still very much learning ourselves, but we hope to continue to inspire others, the next generation of hospitality workers, to consider their impact too.

What are the immediate and long term plans for Lab 22?

My personal favourite however is slightly more stripped back. The Industrial Oil is a creation of Lab 22’s Alex Mills – the UK’s Best Bartender 2018. Olive oil, washed three year

recent study claimed that it takes between four to six times longer to sell to a new customer than it does to an existing one.

Canyoning, climbing, abseiling, clay pigeon shooting and falconry are now all on the menu for corporate delegates at the Vale Resort in Hensol, South Wales. The four-star resort has teamed up with both Wales-based Call of the Wild, which counts John Lewis, Vodafone, the BBC, and Panasonic among its clients, and Wings of Wales, established by conservation photographer and bird of prey handler Lewis Phillips, to offer a whole host of teambuilding events.

t the beginning of the year, Pantone revealed Living Coral as its Colour of 2019.

They describe their chosen shade as ‘an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energises and enlivens with a softer edge.’ Er, if you say so Pantone. We were thinking more pink meets red with a splash of orange, and being honest, initially we weren’t convinced by this terracotta tinge. True, we were all over 2017’s Greenery, and we instantly embraced 2018’s Ultra Violet, but Living Coral was causing flashbacks of 2015 with that sludgy brown Marsala, that no-one quite knew what to do with.

However Living Coral has started to grow on us – it’s warm, it’s bright and it’s nearly orange, which is always a winner. But liking a colour, and knowing what to do with a colour, are two very different things, so we’ve called in the experts for their advice on how to get ok with coral…

WHAT DO HUE THINK?

Defining and describing this shade is not easy, as interiors specialist Ceri Hill says, “Living Coral is a tricky one to pin down, it’s not an insipid peach, nor an earthy terracotta but a warmer softer pink with orange undertones.

It’s not a colour that is much used in the UK with our cooler, northern light. In sunnier climes, where the light is warmer, it comes into its own.”

Designer Ruth Turner agrees, “I would define it really as an orange, – not light enough to be a peach and not red enough to be a terracotta. It brings up feelings of warmth and of days spent in the sunshine in hot countries such as Morocco.”

LIVING (CORAL) IN THE PAST

It is believed Pantone chose this punchy, optimistic hue – officially, Pantone number 16-1546 – because it is linked to our natural world, drawing attention to the beauty of coral, a living organism that is dying fast due to our increasingly warming oceans. But that isn’t always the immediate link people make.

“Coral shades can be found in a lot of Asian and African countries,” says interior designer Rebecca Klein. “Jaipur in India, for example painted the whole city in dusky pink in 1876. The Maharajah at the time wanted to impress British Prince Albert during his India tour in order to strengthen the ties between the two royal families.”

However, for interiors designer Louise Misell, it’s the well-being history of this colour she associates with Living Coral, “the ancient Egyptians harvested coral reef to make jewellery and wearing it was said to ward off evil. The idea that coral could protect you continued down through the ages, with the baby Jesus often depicted wearing a coral amulet.”

CORAL BRIEF

Most of us accept that colour is a powerful communication tool and can be used to signal action, influence mood, and even influence physiological reactions. So how might Living Coral impact on our lives?

Lisa Ridge-Valentine believes the shade has a positive effect, “it’s warm and glowing, reminiscent of tropical sunsets, yet painting all four walls in this energetic and bold shade could be overwhelming. Like a lot of Pantone’s choices, while you may love the feeling the colour brings, using it in your home can be daunting.”

INTERIORS Living Coral might bring us happiness and creativity, but what other shades might this bold statement colour work well with? Ceri says, “Living Coral is unlikely to be everyone’s choice, but there are some lovely examples of it being used against a pale wood finish and then bringing out its warmth with brass accessories.”

Louise advises looking at the colour wheel for partner inspiration. “Coral is opposite blue-green on the colour spectrum, so deep rich shades of teal and turquoise look quite dramatic when used with this shade.” While Angela Coles, store manager of Natuzzi Italia Cardiff Bay suggests keeping the other shades more muted saying, “I think it works beautifully with greys tones and neutral colours.”

MAKE ROOM

“I would use Living Coral in most rooms, but I feel it works well in lounges and bedrooms in particular,” says Ruth.

“Using a lot of it in small rooms such as the downstairs cloakroom can have a wow effect if you use it on all the walls, but while I would not recommend using it on a very large space, it can look amazing as an accent wall.”

Cardiff designers The Tap End have seen Pantone’s colour of 2019 impact on their bathroom schemes, “For us the Living Coral trend has opened the door for bathroom designers to bring more feminine tones back into the bathroom,” explains Justine Bullock.

“Blues reign when it comes to colour in a bathroom but this year more and more people are using this pretty, shade and variations of it, in cloakrooms, en suites and bathrooms.

In bathrooms, we particularly love how the coral shades looks when mixed with lush green plants and a clean, neutral base.”

LIVING WELL

For those of us less brave, our experts have plenty of suggestions to subtly introduce the coral shade to our homes as Lisa suggests, “look out for art works with hints of coral, bring in towels and cushions to add pop of colour, or why not paint a piece of furniture with chalk paint – Annie Sloan has amazing coral shades such as a beautiful pinky coral shade and the vibrant Barcelona orange.”

Rebecca says, “for the braver coral lovers, the colour can be added by creating a focal point such as doors, which can be recurring in other elements in the room such as rugs and pendants.”

Timothy Oulton of the eponymous British furniture and interiors company, reveals while coral isn’t a colour he works with often, when he does it can have real impact. “Peeling Ceiling design sees the clash of dominant hues of pinks and oranges, woven with a hint of blues, yellows and greys, clamouring across in a mottled effect on soft velvet, and pairs beautifully with dark grey and metallic accents.” n

Project Two; Master Ensuite , Cyncoed Cardiff This master en-suite needed updating, the clients wanted to bring this space more in line with their personal taste and style. The previous walk-in shower, whilst large, didn’t feel very inviting and, as the room did not have a window, felt dark. Now it’s a well illuminated, warm and inviting space featuring coloured brassware, and our clients are thrilled!

Project One; Family Bathroom, Pontcanna Cardiff Having a larger room is sometimes more difficult than a smaller space as you have more to consider when planning your new layout. This client came to us for a complete overhaul, and the finished results are exactly what they wanted. Glass coloured feature tiles, lots of storage and a walk around shower area. What’s not to love?!

Project Three; Family Bathroom, Cyncoed Cardiff The poor layout out of this family bathroom meant there was a lot of unused space. We utilised every inch of it, transforming it into a relaxing, luxury space which now includes a freestanding bath, steam shower and other features including ambient lighting and open element mirrored storage.

lagstones, warm, under your feet, a tang of sea salt in the air, and verdant land melting into the ocean.

Standing here you might believe that you’ve found paradise. And you’re not wrong. But, let’s rewind for a moment. To get here, turn off a lane and follow a private road to a serene spot on the edge of Swanbridge, near Penarth. Here, bathing in serenity between vibrant gardens and the beach is Southwinds, is a five-bedroomed, two-storey contemporary oasis.

Once through the front door, you’ll find yourself in a light and open hallway that sets the tone for the rest of the house.

Oak and glass stairs float up to a galleried landing with the suggestion of more elegant beauty, but let’s stay on the ground floor for now. With a home so stunning on the inside, it’s easy to spend an evening lounging in one of the sitting rooms or enjoying the underground billiards room beside the conveniently positioned wine store. But that ever-changing landscape of outside is even more irresistible. The terraced, south facing front garden calls out for those cinematic evenings bathed in the evening sun, the wafts of barbecue curling in the air and that view which serves as a constant reminder that this is no humble beach chalet: there are few who can boast that they have the beach as a back garden.

As the sun sets, you can migrate to the rear, easy maintenance, astro-turfed garden and hop into the hot tub. With nothing but the bubbles, stars and the sound of sea around you it’s hard to believe that Penath town centre is three miles away and Cardiff is only another four miles on top. It’s close enough for easy access, but far enough for peace – a connected escape, if you will. n

Tell us a little about Orthotix…

It manufactures and distributes medically approved orthopaedic supports and sports injury bracing to NHS hospitals, sports teams and direct to public across the UK. And what is its background?

It is one of three businesses in our family portfolio. My brother, sister, father and I also run Dacey

Orthotic Solutions Ltd and ACE Feet In Motion Ltd. It’s a real family affair and we are proud to be challenging as market leaders in the niche industry of Orthotics.

What was your path to this line of work?

Starting out I won a scholarship from Cardiff Council to study a degree in Environmental Health at the University of Wales.

I graduated in 2004 and on my first day of employment with them I handed in my notice so that I could join my family business.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Upscaling Orthotix by moving the entire operation into a newly renovated 25,000 square foot headquarters, which coincided with us being awarded a multimillion-pound contract to supply

Any other passions?

Apart from the world of business, my other passion has always been rugby. For over a decade I played for and captained the mighty Rhiwbina RFC Squirrels before a serious knee injury forced me to hang up my boots.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I don’t have any kids yet so I like to make the most of being able to sneak away when I can by jetting off to explore new places. I’ve got Verona, Italy on my radar for my next adventure.

Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?

The original Wolf of Wall Street – the American author, motivational speaker, and former stockbroker Jordan Belfort; former British heavyweight boxer Henry Cooper; The Rock aka Dwayne Johnson; and the amazing Audrey Hepburn.

When did you last cry, and why?

I’m terrible with sad fi lms and TV programmes, I don’t know what happens to me but I turn into a blubbering mess. The last one to

affect me like this was the moving documentary, Avicii: True Stories which is on Netfl ix and is about the Swedish DJ who committed suicide.

Who would play you in a film about your life?

I think a fellow Welshman like Luke Evans would fit the bill nicely wouldn’t he? Tall, dark and handsome, plus he’d nail the accent.

What’s on your bookshelf at the moment?

Single-Minded by Claude Littner and Phil Knight’s Shoe Dog, both books are inspiring success stories.

Who’s your celebrity crush?

I was a little bit obsessed with Khaleesi in Game of Thrones.

What’s your guiltiest pleasure?

I’ve always been a massive fan of the boy band Blue, it’s mortifying but I’ve still got all their albums and listen to them when nobody is about to judge me…. the song All Rise is still a belter!

Tell us your secret and favourite bits of Cardiff I’ve lived down the road Insole Court in Llandaff for 37 years now and I’ve only just discovered it. If the sun is shining and I fancy a quiet coffee, there’s no place better. I Giardini di Sorrento on City Road is my favourite restaurant at the moment.
