appy Christmas Cardiff! And, I suppose, happy new year since this is our last issue before 2019. Much like the ever-loved Christmas selection box, this issue is full of treats. Just try not to scoff them all before lunch time. We’ve been chatting with Bradley Walsh about life as Dr Who’s new companion, finding out more about the work of Ronald McDonald House in Cardiff, and we’ve got expert advice on the musthave trends for your home. And, when you feel ready to ease yourself out of that armchair we’ve got a What’s On guide full of ideas for things to do over the Christmas holidays. So, we’ll see you back here in three weeks – when you’ll have hoovered up enough pine needles to stuff a sofa, consumed your body weight in Baileys, and maybe even changed out of your pyjamas...

Charity
Making wishes come true
Help to grant some Christmas wishes
The Cardiff & Vale Health Charity is benefitting from a new initiative by Samsung to create and donate unique experiences, powered by technology, to bring a little extra joy. The experiences could range from a virtual reality experience, an ultimate TV and tablet cinema experience or a gaming experience and Samsung will work closely with the charity to create a tailored package to suit its individual needs and the people of Cardiff can help boost the donation of devices. Each person who visits the Cardiff Samsung Experience Store during the festive period can make a wish for Cardiff & Vale Health Charity by dropping a token into the Wish Machine. The more tokens collected, the bigger the donation. If customers make a purchase, they can lift the magic even further with five tokens being automatically donated. What’s more, these gifts won’t stop giving as the technology donation will be
installed as a permanent feature so that the experience can be enjoyed all year round. Sam Grant, chief marketing officer of Samsung Electronics UK, says, “We’re excited to see our tech bring joy to hospitals and charities across the country and it’s even better knowing that local communities can offer their support. A simple token donation will go a long way in making the wishes come true, and we look forward to seeing how the experiences are brought to life.” Simone Joslyn, head of arts and Cardiff & Vale Health Charity, says, “We’re delighted that Samsung has given Cardiff & Vale Health Charity the opportunity to be part of their Wishes Campaign. The VR Experience would make a huge difference to our patients who are often with us for long periods of time.” For more: news.samsung.com/uk or healthcharity.wales

In many dental practices the success of treatment is limited by the number of appliances that dentists are trained to use. It’s also limited because general dentists are not trained to diagnose the cause of a problem. That’s why it matters that a specialist orthodontist handles this for you, because orthodontic treatments are relatively lengthy and expensive and you’ll want to get yours right first time. Specialist orthodontists are best qualified to handle teeth straightening because they have had to gain experience in all fields of dentistry before embarking on a minimum of three years of further training. Experience helps them apply their evidencebased practice with ever greater success, and the two principal orthodontists here at embrace and Crocodile, Martin Rees and Justin Evans, have been doing so since being accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons in 1997 and 1996 respectively. Our specialist orthodontists will design your treatment with your long term health in mind.
That means leaving you with stable, as well as beautiful teeth so you won’t have to go through more orthodontic treatment in the future. Getting access to orthodontics can be a lot simpler than you might think — one phone call or email to us can fast track you and your children to orthodontic care with a qualified specialist. n

The heart of the home Dan Hughes, owner of CLASSIC AND MODERN KITCHENS tells us what sets his business apart
C
lassic and Modern Kitchens is a full-service design studio in South Wales, supplying modern German kitchens and UK manufactured traditional kitchens, bedrooms and home studies. Celebrating seven years this January, we have enjoyed continual growth and success year on year and can boast a string of satisfied customers. What is your proudest achievement? In 2017 we were involved in the Churchills project on Cardiff Road. Working closely with the developers, Portabella, we designed and installed two beautiful traditional in-frame kitchens in the renovated Grade 2 listed former hotel. To work on one of Cardiff’s iconic buildings with such a history was quite a privilege. Which project has been your favourite to work on? That’s a very difficult question, the goal of any designer is not just the look, although that is important, but the function. Any good design must work for the client and ultimately enhance their life. As such I would have to say Mr & Mrs Jones from Caerphilly was one of the best. Both professionals (one an accountant, the other a supermarket manager) had very little time together. In his spare time Mr. Jones enjoyed baking, so we designed a kitchen around his needs, but also with an area for sitting/perching On completion we returned a few months later to see how they were getting on, and Mrs Jones said the following “with the old layout we, we used to come home and just watch the TV and hardly speak. Now with the kitchen the way it is I sit at the breakfast bar while he (Mr. Jones) potters around baking and cooking, and we talk, and that’s something we rarely did before. The new kitchen has made such a difference to our lives”. To me that’s the goal, happy customers. What can a client expect from Classic & Modern Kitchens? First, an education. We can design you an amazing space, but it’s your space, how can you make decisions when we ask questions if you don’t have the information? So the first thing we always do is explain things, in an honest, easy to understand way, no flannel and no hard sell. Next you can expect an experienced designer. Between myself and Emma we have years of
experience, and both being foodies (greedies), we understand how a kitchen flows and how best to optimise the space. A passion for what we do ensures every client, no matter the budget gets the same treatment because everyone deserves the best they can get for their money. How much is a typical spend on a kitchen? Again, a very difficult question, it’s like how long a piece of string is! Are we the cheapest? No, you can buy cheaper kitchens, but I don’t believe in cheap, I believe in value for money. Everything we supply I have or would have in my house and I use it daily, I believe in what I supply and the quality of it. And if in time something I supply does not meet my standards I will stop supplying it. Our kitchens range from £6,000 to at present £65,000 and anywhere in-between. What I will say is that with such a wide variety of kitchens and appliances we can normally cater for most budgets. What plans do you have for 2019? 2019 will see some our most exciting projects yet, with one in particular in Cardiff really pushing the design limits with some exacting engineering challenges. Also, some exciting developments like Brickworks coming to an end and more coming online its looking like it’s going to be a busy year. All I can say is watch this space, you can follow us on Facebook @ classicandmodernkitchens for more. Buying a kitchen is a big investment. How do I know I can trust a designer to do a good job? One thing that has always frustrated me about the kitchen industry is the lack of qualifications and training. Some designers without installation knowledge do the most ridiculous, silly and downright dangerous things in their plans. I have come full circle from a fitting background to designing and am confident in the knowledge and experience we can bring. We have a number of architects who send their customers to us as they too know we can develop ideas and ensure there are no nasty surprises along the way! It is vital a customer can trust the experience and competence of the person sat across from them when they hold your home in their hands. In 2017 I was offered a scholarship though Cosentino to attend the only 3-year Kitchen Design degree course in the country at Buckinghamshire New University. Despite being
very busy running my own business, having a family and training for an Ironman, I decided to take it. Now in my second year, I don’t regret my decision at all, I have had the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the best in the industry, not just kitchen designers but architects, landscape designers, furniture designers etc. I have just under 2 years to go, and when I graduate, I will become one of a handful (and to the best of my knowledge only one in south wales) of qualified kitchen designers. We let our completed kitchens, customers and repeat business do the talking. Our focus is to quietly and confidently give our best in products, service and commitment to our customers. That is just one more reason to trust us with the most important room you your home. n

IN THE PINK
Soft, subtle and easy on the eye blush pinks will bathe your home in a rosy glow. “2019 will showcase a shift from millennial pink, with softer shades like rosy neutrals and muted blushes, which reflect a spirituality, being favoured,” says Rhian Francis, managing director at The Place For Homes. “Unlike millennial pink, these hues are less trendy and more timeless, with an emphasis on soft grown-up pastels with blush tones combined with floral prints inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement.” ”Blush and black are big for the classical look,” adds Dorian Bowen, director and head of creative thought at Project One. Justine Bullock, co-creator and designer at The Tap End is loving the addition of pink to bathrooms. “We love pink in a bathroom for many reasons,” she says. “It softens the space and works particularly well in a feminine scheme, for example in an en-suite off a bedroom. To add pink to a bathroom without it being overkill consider using it in accessories only, ambient lighting or furniture additions, but avoid using it in permanently fixed items such as tiling or main pieces of furniture in case you wish to change it down the line.”

Deep, dark, intense tones will add drama to any room. “There’s a resurgence of much deeper colours on the horizon for 2019,” says Ceri Hill, design director at Chalkhouse Interiors. “With rich shades of dark fruits, dramatic deep blue and, for those looking for real impact it has got to be matte black.”

INTERIORS STATEMENT SHADES
A room with a neutral base colour scheme can be instantly updated with splashes of colour in the current season’s musthave hues. “Slowly but surely we are seeing a move away from the bold colours we have seen on walls, and instead a move towards softer, more neutral wall colours,” says Rhian from The Place for Homes. “Designers are picking up on this trend and are introducing colour into rooms with the use of key furnishing pieces like cabinets and sofas in deep navy blues and denims. Towards the spring and summer we expect to see optimism being brought into design by pairing rich, deep blues with yellows and ochres.” “Lively shades like blue and orange, supported by reliable classics like grey, white and beige, are going to be our favourite colour combinations for 2019,” adds Rose Sgueglia, copywriter and PR at Trendy Products. “Having strong, bold colours associated with lighter shades is going to add that vibrant drop of colour to our interiors by keeping the space minimal and refined. Far from being a big feast of colours and patterns, 2019 is going to offer people the possibility to be bold and stylish at the same time.” “Add a few carbon black elements into a neutral colour scheme to add that designer touch,” advises Ceri from Chalkhouse Interiors. “Matte black, even in very small doses, adds a crisp, graphic edge that really sharpens things up. I am desperately looking to include a black tap and sink in my next kitchen project, with a cement-inspired quartz worktop, not the industrial, harsh concrete of last year, but a softer, smudged, textured finish for surface interest. “Keeping with the neutral theme, I visualise using pale white oak doors paired with a tall feature display unit painted in dead flat black to really stand out. With a few beautiful pieces of white china and some soft green foliage on show this is a scheme that is very easy to live with but oozes style in spades.”

INTERIORS HEAVY METAL
From rose gold to matte black, metallic shades are key right now. “Mixed metals with different finishes are a strong contender because they instantly add depth and division between spaces whilst keeping the whole room connected,” says Dorian from Project One. “They also provide extra light reflection which can elevate a space allowing the light to move around throughout the day. We’ve coined the word ‘lux-dustrial’ and love to combine a luxury aesthetic with an industrial feel. This looks like mixed metals and luxury fabrics in a room with exposed steels.” “Metallic finishes are easy to introduce into a bathroom as there are so many opportunities for it, in radiators, accessories and of course, brassware,” continues Justine from The Tap End. “Strong metallic additions will give a bathroom another dimension and rich tones like brass, rose gold, copper and black chrome look amazingly lavish in dark schemes so consider metallic if you want drama! A good place to try this out is in a cloakroom where we always feel you can be a little more adventurous and give your guests a surprise when they use that room – think luxury, boutique hotel bathrooms when channelling this style.”

ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES
“Conscious consumers are becoming increasingly interested in sustainability and ethical issues and want to buy products that clearly identify the provenance, or products that are made in the UK,” says Sian Elin Thomas, director of Sian Elin. “Digital overload and concerns about the environment are the catalysts for the growing trend towards artisanal and native designs that show the makers’ mark and depict global folk cultures. The ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement resonate with this outlook. It’s this idea of ‘we know where our food comes from, so why not our things?’” “Our latest collection, American Folk, depicts ancient cultures, human connection and worldly travel. “It reimagines the exotic botanical and ethnic motifs of South American folk cultures. The new collection is underpinned by echoes of the Arts and Crafts movement, with its focus on nature-inspired intricate patterns and the Mille Fleur style. Our designs are printed on hand-crafted cushions and lampshades, as well as fabric and wallpaper. And they are all produced in Britain.” “We are all more conscious of buying less and buying better,” adds Lisa Ridge-Valentine, owner of Lisa Valentine Home. “Our products are made from sustainable wood and steel and are made to last and designed to be useful. William Morris once said ‘have nothing in your home you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful’ and we sell products you can use every day but look beautiful too. “I think we are all very much aware of sustainability and considering what we buy far more carefully. This is why everything I stock has to be really useful and have a purpose, yet it needs to look beautiful too.”

Put simply... we love bathrooms!
Zoe Curtis - Designer
Here are three examples of some of our completed projects from 2018. All varying in size, shape, brief and budget, all uniquely personal to each client’s specific needs. We love a good before and after reveal.
Lynda Rees - Co-creator
In listening we gain an insight into the client’s priorities, learn how the room is used, how frequently and by whom, establish a wish list of items (such as a freestanding bath, double basins etc) and set the budget. In doing this designing is then made easier and the client should not get any big shocks when it comes to presentation time, both in design and cost.
Justine Bullock - Co-creator
When designing a bathroom, the most important thing for a designer to do is to listen. This can be difficult for creatives, we like to go in all guns blazing with grandiose ideas fit for a modern art exhibition, but that style is not for everyone, and it certainly doesn’t translate well into timeless designs for real homes.
If you are in the market for a new bathroom there are certain things you can do to avoid your new bathroom dating quickly. Avoid bright colours, don’t include too many ‘on trend’ items such as glittery mosaics or features, and don’t go too high tech! This is good advice not only for achieving a timeless haven but also translates well into resale of property. In our experience people will often dislike bright colours in bathrooms when they view a potential new home, and high-tech items such as electronic taps etc can put off many people if they are not tech savvy. With lighting always opt warm white, not blue hues that look space age. Achieving your dream bathroom can be a fun, exciting and exhilarating process, naturally we recommend getting a bathroom designer on board. Having a bathroom designers assistance will avoid you making any costly mistakes and give you the very best quality and finish for your budget. Our design service is completely free of charge, for more information visit us in store.

Project Two; En suite, Cardiff The clients had recently relocated back to Cardiff after living in England for some time. They wanted to renovate all of the bathrooms in their new home as a priority due to the poor quality of the products and installation that the previous owners had had fitted. Must haves included ambient lighting, future proofing and larger shower.
Project One; Family Bathroom, Bridgend Following a leak in their original bathroom the clients had to have a complete renovation to rectify the problems as it was quite severe and damaged the bathroom, landing and kitchen ceiling below. They wanted to bring the bathroom up to date and make it more family friendly, on a cost effective budget. This was the only bathroom in the house so it had to offer a bath, shower and provide storage within a compact space.
Project Three; Master En suite, Cardiff After downsizing to an apartment over two levels renovating the kitchen came first for this couple, followed by their master en-suite which was to match the style of the kitchen and provide a cohesive look throughout the property. Being in a loft space there was very limited head height which made designing this space a challenge. The clients were very open to suggestion on layout and positioning of products, the only remit was to make it light and airy in the lower section which struggled to get any light in through the only window which was on the upper level.

Music to the ears Friday 8 February 2019– that’s the date for the diaries of music fans from Wales and the world for the fourth annual Welsh Language Music Day – Dydd Miwsig Cymru. Last February saw Hollywood actor Rhys Ifans and Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens urge fans of all genres to discover the incredible music being made in the Welsh language, and the campaign reached more than 74 million, with musicians reporting noticeable spikes in listening figures on streaming services like Spotify. With the date set for 2019, Huw is calling on individuals and organisations across Wales and the world to take part by staging their own gig, listening party or by playing Welsh language music in their business with advice and support available to make it happen.
To commemorate what’s been a golden year for Welsh language music, AM18, a compilation album celebrating the best new music from artists and record labels in Wales during 2018 will be released featuring 18 artists. Huw says, “You might be into guitars or grime, hip hop or harmonies, squeaky beats or big singalongs, but whatever gets you grooving, there’s Welsh language music you’ll listen to and fall in love with from the first note. Your next favourite song might just be made in the Welsh language and the fourth Dydd Miwisg Cymru – that’s Welsh Language Music Day in English –is the day to help you discover it.” For more follow @cymraeg and #DyddMiwsigCymru on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Treating dental phobia is not just about fixing teeth Our goal at Pontcanna dental CARE is to help you overcome your fear of the Dentist and feel in control.
A
recent survey found that one in three adults* fear the Dentist’s chair, so you’re not alone. Here at Pontcanna Dental Care we have a lot of experience in treating dental phobia and we can help you. Here are just some of the ways we’ve helped our clients…
Our team have been there Many of us have had a phobia of the Dentist, so you’re not alone and are in sympathetic hands. One of our Dentists didn’t go himself for 10 years because of his fear! We don’t make any judgements about your dental health, we just want to help you achieve a healthy mouth, and then to return regularly to keep it that way knowing you’re in control.
We don’t like to appear too much like a dental practice We eliminate that dental “smell” and dress as non-clinically as possible – you’ll often find one of the Dentists in shorts in the summer! Our practice is an open environment and we eliminate the mystery – no closed doors and frosted windows. In fact, you can see into the practice if you walk past. If you do, give us a wave or just pop in for a coffee.
We look after you at all times Your first point of contact will be with a warm, friendly and understanding team member, who will arrange an appointment that is convenient

for you and for when you are ready to meet us. Our Dentists are great listeners and you will meet them for a chat in a room away from the dental chair. This enables them to understand and meet your needs and talk to us about your fears, so we can help you overcome them. They always explain everything to you and treat you at your pace. You have their personal mobile numbers in case you have any questions or need advice. Cherry always calls the next day to ensure everything is ok after your visit and answer any questions.
Pain-free Dentistry
You are in control

Call us on 02920 387 683. www.pontcannadental.co.uk
We give you as much time as you require, and we never rush – time is not an issue for us. For your first visit, you can even just organise a free ten-minute chat with the Dentist to see if we’re the right place for you. During all stages of your treatment, you are in control, we will treat you at your pace and if you need to pause, we will. Our convenient membership plans help you to ensure you stay in control of your smile.
Yes, that’s right. Dental treatment should be pain-free, and we have a number of techniques at our disposal to ensure this. We also help you to be relaxed at all times by using distraction techniques and we avoid emotive words. Your own music choices and soothing images on the screen above you allows you to personalise your visit. Most importantly you are the boss. n

Don’t take our word for it At Pontcanna Dental Care we do everything to ensure we meet your individual needs. Here's what some of our clients have to say... I feel extremely comfortable going to this practice, and have had no problems organising appointments, even in emergency situations. All the staff within the practice are lovely and make you feel really welcome, even though you may only go every six months, all the staff know your name and this is important to me as it reduces any anxiety I may feel going to the dentist. Alyn and the dental nurses make you feel comfortable and are in tune to you when you are in pain and adjust to your needs – my previous dentist did not do this and put me off going to the dentist for years. Alyn’s dental suite is a relaxing environment, with a number of wildlife photos on the wall that Alyn took himself. I really don’t want to know what Alyn is doing to my teeth, I have trust in Alyn to carry out what is required without going through the details of the treatment, so instead we talk rugby!! I have recommended this dental practice to a number of people and will continue to do so. I would also recommend signing up for the dental plan that the practice offers, especially if you require a number of treatments. C Calder A couple of months ago I needed emergency treatment for a broken crown, I was very fortunate to locate Pontcanna Dental Care, who immediately repaired it for me within hours. Since then I have received very professional and
exemplary care in having dental implants to re-balance my dental bite with great success. An investment for the future with great benefits. G Wheeler When I first visited Charlie I was suffering with a raging gum infection, I was so phobic about dentistry that I had not seen a dentist for over 15 years. From the moment he greeted me, sat down opposite me and listened to how I had been extremely traumatised by a school dentist, I started to feel at ease and reassured. By the end of our chat I had a true feeling of calm and understanding. It was quite obvious he was dedicated to his profession. From then on, his expert attention, pain-free treatments, constant reassurance, caring and understanding have enabled me to re-establish regular visits. I would not hesitate in recommending Pontcanna Dental Care. T Holland Charles is not only my dentist but also my friend. This statement coming from someone who, from the age of six, was terrified of the word ‘dentist’ must be a revelation! Having moved into the area five years ago, I had no idea where to find a good dentist. I was recommended to go to Charles because he was so kind and caring – this certainly proved to be true. Nothing is ever too much trouble and I can honestly say that my ‘fear’ has completely
disappeared – for the first time in almost 50 years! As you can imagine, I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would be able to sit in a dentist’s chair and laugh, but I do – frequently! S Carruthers I was thrilled by the level of expertise, support and customer service I received both prior to treatment and throughout. To be able to smile and laugh without the fear of people looking at my teeth sticking out or gaps on the side of my teeth is phenomenal. I feel a free spirit, I finally feel confident enough to talk, laugh and smile just as I want to and my teeth now match my smiley, bubbly personality. Being insecure about the gaps in my teeth since I was a young girl, has more or less ruined my life and ruined my confidence. I always doubted myself, tried not to smile when people were to the side of me and would never like pictures taken from my side profile. The difference to me is above and beyond what I was expecting. J Kemp

Good times As Doctor Who’s companion, he’s been to the edge of the universe and back, but Bradley Walsh still has a soft spot for South Wales…

P “Doctor Who is iconic. It’s an extraordinary show to be part of”
erhaps best known for presenting tea-time quiz show The Chase, Bradley Walsh was a surprise choice for many as one of The Doctor’s new companions in the latest series of Doctor Who. But actually, Bradley has a quite an acting pedigree, counting roles in Coronation Street, Law and Order: UK and even Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah-Jane Adventures among his vast back catalogue of work, and if online discussions are anything to go by, it seems that he’s won the hearts of Doctor Who fans the world over with his portrayal of Graham O’Brien, one of the Doctor’s new companions. And Bradley’s loving being part of the show. “Corrie and Law and Order are both incredibly big in the US, and across the Commonwealth,” he says. “But Doctor Who is iconic. It’s an extraordinary show to be part of. “I love Jodie Whittaker, she’s amazing. She has so much energy and is such a delight to work with. And Mandip [Gill - who plays Yazmin] and Tosin [Cole - who plays Ryan]. They are all brilliant people.” And Bradley’s full of praise for the behindthe-scenes team too. “We’ve got an amazing production designer called Arwel Jones,” he says. “He’s got the most fantastic eye and does an incredible job. I find it fantastic what he does.

“Then you’ve got aesthetics and makeup. The head of make-up and her team are extraordinary. I need the best make-up and prosthetics I can get!” he adds with a laugh. There’s few similarities between Bradley and his alter ego, he says. “I’ve never driven a bus and I haven’t spent all that time in remission. “I think Graham’s been on his own for a long while and found love later in life, but I have been lucky and blessed with a lovely family and everything that goes with that. “And he supports West Ham, but I support Arsenal. I played a West Ham fan in Law and Order too. My wife and her family are all West Ham fans though, so they like it. “Graham seems like a bit of a lost soul. He’s like Yoda, but without the pointy ears!” And Bradley’s not sure he’d deal with alien encounters in quite the same way as Graham either. “It’s impossible to know how you’d react in those kinds of situations,” he says. “It’s not real, and it doesn’t exist. It’s a reactive world, and I’m not sure how I’d react. But probably, I’d run.” If he was given control of the TARDIS though, Bradley’s got very clear ideas about where he’d head. “I love history and I am a history buff,” he says. “I’d go back to Victorian times and have lunch with Dickens. I would go back to the war room to see what the thought process was behind Neville Chamberlain signing of the Munich Agreement. “I’d go back to Roman times and Egyptian times and see how the pyramids were built. “I’d want to see how Stonehenge got there. That sort of stuff fascinates me. “I would have like to have been at the Queen’s coronation. Something I’m very interested in is the end of World War I. Those young kids at the Somme, I’d like to know what they were thinking when they were standing in line to enlist. I find all of that fascinating. I’d definitely go back in time rather than forward.” In some ways, returning to the areas around Cardiff is a step back in time for Bradley. “I did my first ever stand-up comedy tour in South Wales,” he reminisces. “It was around 1985/6 and I stayed with a family in Newport on Corporation Road. I did Penarth Conservative Club and all round there. Some places I did alright in, some weren’t so good, but I loved it. “It was great to come back for the filming, and I got to go to places that I hadn’t been before. We went up to the Brecons, and there was a fantastic place in the first episode where we’re on an overhanging rock. It was just beautiful. “I tell you what though, it doesn’t half rain in Wales! But it adds to it. “When I come back I want to go to Castell Coch and Camarthen. I think the whole area is just outstanding.” This series of Doctor Who marked a change

from other recent series, with fewer of the “on location” shoots taking place in the Cardiff area than in other years. Eagle-eyed viewers will, however, have spotted Celtic Manor in episode four, Arachnids in the UK (the one with all the massive spiders - and Chris Noth). And it was at Celtic Manor that Bradley was based for the duration of the filming. “It was brilliant to see all the ballroom and stuff,” he says. “There was a spider in there the size of a bus! I thought it was a fantastic episode. I was watching it and saying to my wife ‘That’s where I have dinner!’ and she was all ‘I know! You keep telling me!’ “I loved filming there. Normally I had to get up so early so it was great to be able to get up 20 minutes before work. “Celtic Manor is my favourite hotel in Britain,” he continues. “I just love the place. I was there for nine months and I can’t tell you how much they looked after me. “In that time I think I used every single table and every single chair in every restaurant. One night I was queuing for a table at dinner and I looked around and Sir Terry Matthews [ who owns the resort] was waiting in line behind me. I turned around and said ‘Hello, my name is Brad. I hope you don’t mind me saying hello.’ I just thought it was terrific. “Do you know what though? Sadly, because of my work schedule, apart from the Celebrity Cup charity golf tournament I only played one round of golf in the whole nine months I was there which was a real shame. “I got snowed in for three nights during the Beast from the East. The views were amazing and it was just great. You’ve got everything you need there! “The atmosphere in the place is wonderful. Everyone speaks to you and the staff are lovely. “This year I’m spending Christmas at home with my family, but I hope I’ll still be able to get back at some point because Christmas at Celtic Manor is just out of this world.” And, let’s face it, with his recent galaxyhopping experiences, if anyone know what’s out of this world, it’s Bradley.

A Story Well Told
Robert Light, director of creative production and TV programmes at the Orchard Media & Events Group, talks getting creative at Christmas
T
his is an exciting time to be a creative in Wales. I feel I’m in a very fortunate situation to go to work in Cardiff and enjoy everything I do, sitting alongside a team of people who enjoy producing stylish imagery and telling a good story is a delight, and above all, I get to do this on my doorstep. The build up to Christmas is a particularly busy time for Orchard as we are currently producing TV programmes, commercials and promotional films for clients throughout Wales and beyond. At a time when retailers, creatives and agencies are all showcasing some of their best content, brands everywhere are continuing to compete for the most impacts, likes, shares and PR stories to give them the edge during a very busy and competitive Christmas period. The production of Christmas commercials and content has become a huge tradition for brands, and year on year it becomes increasingly challenging to stand out from the crowd for brands producing thought provoking films that can be layered across numerous media platforms. The season provides an opportunity for many to produce content that differs from the rest of the year. Using celebrities, children, animals, music and characters, brands will do anything to engage and create an impact with the audience, and this is usually done through
62 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk
three very traditional methods – humour, emotion or thought provocation. There is no more exciting challenge than coming up with ideas for Christmas content. It’s the time of year where you can revisit your childhood and let the imagination run wild – even more than usual! From Quality Street to Coca Cola, John Lewis and now Iceland, we all remember Christmas marketing campaigns, and have our favourites. At a time when technology is developing at a fast pace and is more accessible than ever, content is freely produced daily, and can be viewed anywhere across all platforms. What remains constant for us at Orchard are the traditional values inherent in producing strong, impactful content and they will never change – high quality imagery combined with a good story. It doesn’t matter how good the crew, equipment and technology are, the content has no meaning or sense of belonging without a strong narrative – and that’s true of all the great Christmas ads. Whether we are producing a 10 second film for social media or a 60 minute TV programme, we always aim to ensure there is a story to everything we do, and
that doesn’t always mean spoken narrative or text – stories can be told in a number of visual ways. Orchard is very fortunate to have a healthy mix of producers and directors from a storytelling background collaborating with creative directors who have an eye for great moving imagery. With this team of people, idea sessions can be very entertaining, but it makes for an exciting working environment, and delivers the results our clients, and the viewing public want. Orchard’s ambitions over the past few years have been rewarded with a terrific portfolio of work, and with a strong production team of 16 we’ve been responsible for more than 20 TV and radio programmes, a number of TV commercials, and a vast collection of promotional, online, social and corporate films. We’re very lucky to work with some great clients, agencies and broadcast partners at Orchard, and just want to keep building on those in future. We recently went across to Cannes for MIP TV, the international market for content development and distribution, exploring ways that the content we are producing here in Wales can be sold to global markets, and Orchard is playing our part in Cardiff’s new high value screen collaboration Clwstwr Creadigol, partnering up to help the creative industries thrive here in Wales. As the year draws to a close, we’re really chuffed that one of our radio programmes, Trust Me I’m Your Barber has been shortlisted for a national Mind Media Award, accolades which recognise and celebrate the best possible representations of mental health across TV, radio, print and online. It’s a topic that is very close to our hearts at Orchard, and one we’ll be actively involved in next year, adopting the Mental Health Foundation in Wales as our designated annual charity. The award is for a programme we produced for BBC Radio Wales earlier in the year that was fronted by a well-known Cardiff figure, Matthew Pritchard. It took an inside look at a fantastic scheme run by the Lions Barber Collective, combatting men’s mental health issues by encouraging men to talk from the heart while they’re having their hair-cut. It’s a great story, and exemplifies what this piece is all about. I hope your Christmas story is a happy one, and wish you the very best in 2019. n

DREAMS & WISHES CHARITY Dreams & Wishes is a wonderful charity that is dedicated to helping seriously ill children and their families by making their dreams and wishes come true.
Dreams and Wishes hosted a wonderful Halloween party at Cardiff Castle, for the children and their families which was an overwhelming success. What made the day even more special was the fact that Miss Wales, Bethany Harris, the Miss Wales contestants 2019, and the staff from the Disney Shop, came along to spend time with the children which added to the excitement.
Wendy
The charity’s wonderful team of volunteers arranged fun activities for the children, including, party games, dancing, stories, gifts for the children and a delicious buffet. The highlight of the day was when the children were taken into the tunnels on a Ghost Tour, exploring the Castle’s history through tales of ghostly encounters from times gone past to the present day.

CHRISTMAS EVENTS In December, Dreams and Wishes continue to arrange many special Christmas events for very sick children and their families. To name a few, the charity have arranged another visit to the Harry Potter Studios, they are hosting a glittering Christmas party, and they will be taking the children on the annual visit to the House of Commons as special guests of The Speaker of the House of Commons.

Magical Adventures for all ages!
The award-winning charity was founded in 2011 by, Mr Tony Curtis MBE, who is also the Chairman. The charity have been working with families across the UK, providing vital support throughout the child’s illness as well as helping to build happy memories by granting lifelong wishes. Dreams and Wishes is very unique as it is a 100% volunteer- based charity, and 100% of all funds raised create the dreams and wishes of very sick children. No matter how big or small a child’s wish is the dedicated team of volunteers work tirelessly to make it happen. Battling a life-threatening illness is heartbreaking for both a child and their support network and can often mean countless hospital stays, painful treatments and a loss of a childhood, something which most children take for granted. Dreams & Wishes provide support for children and their families as well as ensuring that families are still able to make wonderful and long-lasting memories. The charity understand that every child is special with their own dreams and wishes, so it is their aim to make sure that every child they work with is able to fulfil their dream. Some children want to meet their favourite TV stars, fly in a helicopter, visit Legoland or to just have their own playhouse. No matter how big or small a child¹s dream is, the charity are committed to making sure it comes true.
“One snowy night, Claudia Quash, makes a special wish on the brightest star in the sky...”
Wendy Hobbs, Ambassador, is delighted to be invited back to John Lewis, Cardiff in December to host another charity book-signing event with ‘Claudia’s Special Wish’ a beautifully illustrated magical Christmas story. Wendy wrote the book for the charity to inspire the children never to give up on their dreams and wishes and to give parents hope. So far, the book has raised thousands of pounds for the charity and raised awareness of the charity’s amazing work.
Claudia’s Special Wish is available to order via the charity or on Amazon. Whether you, your company or your group would like to get involved with the charity, there are many ways you can do so. By taking on a fundraising challenge, volunteering for us or choosing us as your designated charity, you can help us to make more dreams come true.

Toddler group brings smiles to care home A Cardiff care home hosts a weekly toddler group as part of a fun intergenerational activity.
T
y Llandaff, a private nursing, residential and respite care home in Conway Road, Pontcanna, linked up with the city’s branch of Acorns & Oaks, an organisation who runs pop-up playgroups for care home residents to bring together people of different generations. The Cardiff care home’s activities co-ordinator Melanie Geoghegan decided to join the scheme after previously staging similar events at the home where the staff brought in their own children to interact with residents – something which proved very successful. Previous research has shown that when young and old share activities the older generation showed substantial improvements in their mental and physical health. Children also showed benefits including language development and increased confidence. The play sessions at Ty Llandaff, which offers nursing and residential care from the age of 18, involved toddlers and pre-schoolers playing
with toys and books and interacting with the home’s residents. This was followed by snacks and drinks before everyone joined in with some wellknown nursery rhymes. Ty Llandaff care home manager Janice Evans says, “We work very hard to make Ty Llandaff a wonderful place to live for our residents and we are always looking for activities and events that improve their overall happiness and well-being. “The staff and children from Acorns & Oaks are now regular visitors to the home and the residents love interacting with the children, and chatting to the parents. All the research points to the fact that spending time with young children can bring a new lease of life to older people, and this is our experience too. It is so heart-warming to see the children and residents singing along to songs. “The importance of the group is that it helps to bridge the gap between the young and elderly within the local community. Our residents look forward to Acorns & Oaks visiting us every week.” n

How we can make a child’s Christmas St David’s Toy Appeal is calling on shoppers to reach donation target
T
his Christmas, St David’s Cardiff is holding its annual Toy Appeal, and with a target of 10,000 donations in 23 days, they need your help. The Toy Appeal supports more than 20 incredible charities in Wales, and St David’s wants to make sure that every child in South Wales receives a Christmas gift. The campaign launched on 1 December and is running until 23 December, and St David’s is asking its customers and visitors to the city to buy an extra gift for a child in need. Shoppers can drop their donations off at the in-centre Donation Station where a team of festive helpers will be making sure that gifts are delivered safely in time to start the celebrations. The appeal, launched in 2015, has seen the generosity of shoppers donate nearly 24,000 gifts so far. Charities taking part include Barnardo’s, Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital Charity, Ty Hafan, Dreams & Wishes, Valley’s Kids and Latch.

“The appeal, launched in 2015, has seen the generosity of shoppers donate nearly 24,000 gifts so far”
Steven Madeley, General Manager for St David’s, says, “Over the past three years, our shoppers have shown extraordinary generosity, allowing us to donate more toys every year to amazing charities that provide such vital services in the community, and we need your help to continue this. “Last year, we also saw lots of local businesses and schools also getting involved, and we hope this year will be the same, so we can achieve our mission to ensure more children across South Wales have a Christmas to remember. All we ask is you pick up something extra when buying your gifts and help us reach our target, so more children will have a memorable Christmas.” Shoppers who want to take part can head to the Donation Station in the centre, located near the Clogau store. n For more information on the Toy Appeal, visit stdavidscardiff.com/ToyAppeal or join in the conversation on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using #SDToyAppeal

Meet Lacie Lane, one of the children who will benefit from the Toy Appeal
Lacie Lane, aged six, from Newport was diagnosed with leukaemia in February 2015 and is currently undergoing treatment at the children’s Rainbow Ward at Heath Hospital in Cardiff. Lacie is currently awaiting a bone marrow transplant after a recent relapse. Christmas is a time to be around family, but Lacie’s condition can mean that that she could be in isolation, with only two visitors throughout the period because of risk of infection. However, she is going through this courageously, always keeping a smile on her face. Donating just one toy to the St David’s Toy Appeal could make a difference in Lacie’s life, and hundreds of other children like her who are in need this Christmas. LATCH Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity is currently supporting Lacie’s family through its home from home accommodation at the Children’s Hospital for Wales, as well as its Social Work service and access to LATCH grants for travel, heating, equipment and much more. LATCH also provides trips and treats, including stays in one of LATCH’s caravans, ensuring Lacie and her family are able to enjoy much needed time together.

Full steam ahead
Emma Dance checks out the Head of Steam, the latest addition to the Cardiff pub scene
T
he first thing that hits you when you enter the new Head of Steam on Church Street is just how different it is from its previous incarnation. Once a somewhat bland Harvester, it’s undergone a major transformation and is now part of that new wave of pubs – all industrial chic and dedicated to the kind of savvy drinker who demands a bit more bang (and by “bang” we’re talking craftsmanship with a hint of the unusual) for their buck than a pint of generic lager. Which conveniently brings me to the second thing that you notice – the sheer range and variety of drinks on offer. The Head of Steam bills itself as being big on craft beer – and indeed it is, with around 19 lines with a selection of rotating craft keg, plus 10 cask ale lines, with beers sourced from the local area as well as from brewers across the UK, not to mention a plethora of
74 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk
beers and cans. And if beer’s not your thing, then rest assured you’re not going to be disappointed because the array of spirits on offer is vast, there’s a decent – though not extensive – choice in the wine department, and the cocktail collection has plenty to keep you interested (FYI the espresso martini is really rather good.) It’s not all about the drinks at the Head of Steam though. There’s a great menu full of modern takes on pub grub, with burgers, hot dogs, pizzas, pies, fish and chips, curry, steak and the like, as well as section dubbed “Beer Tapas” which is basically small plates with recommendations of beer matches. I’m visiting on launch night with a couple of friends and we dive right in to the small plates to kick off the evening’s eatings. Pulled beef tortillas are mouthfuls of rich, meaty, moreishness, while the vegetarian version, filled with “chilli sin carne” is equally full of flavour. Both deliver a
restaurant
tickle of chilli heat when I’d have preferred a boisterous slap, but it’s a minor niggle and really a matter of personal taste. Japanese-inspired squid is cooked just so, soft squid inside and a crisp coating with a subtle salt-and-pepper flavour, but the universal favourite is the sweet paprika chorizos – plump little sausages bursting with comforting warmth from the spice. Given that none of us feel inclined to nail our flags to the mast and pick just one main each, we decide to continue our sharing spree for the main courses and by mutual consent hit up three sections of the menu opting for a pie, a pizza and a burger. The Sloppy Joe burger is ridiculous for all the right reasons – two 4oz Road Crew beer and beef burgers loaded with chilli spiced beef, nachos, guacamole, sour cream and jalapenos. It’s a wondrous melange of textures and flavours, with saltiness, spiciness and creaminess dancing a flavoursome tango, and the satisfying crunch from the nachos partnering with the juicy burgers in a way which makes you wonder why crisps aren’t included in a burger construction far more regularly. Lamb, chorizo and chickpea pie is reassuringly proper with the filling fully encased in crisp pastry – no soggy bottoms here or, indeed the prolific pie imposter of a disc of puff pastry balanced on what is essentially a stew. After the chorizo triumph in the first round we’ve got high hopes, we’re waiting once again for that spicy cuddle but sadly it’s only just detectable. The lamb part though is top class, soft and sweet meat that all but melts in the mouth, and had we not been spoilt by the starter we’d have zero cause for complaint, especially when the whole thing is partnered with creamy mash, mushy peas and a smattering of crispy onions. A spiced salt beef and jalapeno stonebaked pizza is perhaps the weakest of our chosen trilogy. It’s nice enough, and with a decent amount of topping, but the base is a little soft and feels slightly underdone. It’s nothing that a minute more on a hot stone wouldn’t fix, and as it’s only the first night, I’ve no doubt that a little more practice will make perfect – especially if the rest of the food is anything to go by. Our over-indulgence means that we’re too stuffed for puds, but the prospect of maple waffles alone is enough to ensure a return visit from me at least. That, and the fact that we’ve barely made an inroad into that beer collection… n

It’s been a highly successful year for Charles James Developments with the opening of the showroom early in 2018 but, they believe their greatest achievement is when they complete any project as it’s testament to what they do when they’ve made someone’s dream home a reality. “It’s a great feeling when clients invite us back to see what they’ve done with the space,” says Dean. 2018 has also seen expansion this year for Charles James Developments as despite being a Welsh born and bred company they’ve also undertaken projects in London. WALLY’S
Our greatest achievement this year has been setting up a new business, Wally’s Spirits from Wales, on the concourse at St David’s shopping centre, selling craft spirits from all over Wales. This process has been very challenging but we are now one of the few independent businesses trading in the Centre. Coming on the back of opening Wally’s Liquor Cellar in Castle Arcade last year we are very proud of this achievement. Not during 2018, but in 2017 we won Family Business of the Year at the Cardiff Business Awards and we are previous winners of the Cardiff Life Retailer of the Year Award We sell spirits from across Wales but our two most popular ranges have been Penderyn Whisky and Aber Falls Gins from North Wales. During 2019 we will consolidate further our trading positions in the St David’s centre and Castle Arcade. We are also planning to undertake a refurbishment of Wally’s Kaffeehaus in Royal Arcade. www.wallysdeli.co.uk
“2018 has been an eventful year for us at Waterstone Homes so it was hard to pick one particular highlight. From working with local people in the Vale of Glamorgan on public art (where our beautiful developments look amazing) to sports sponsorships for local football and rugby teams, it is nice to give something to the communities in which we build. We also partnered up with John Lewis and enjoyed a fantastic event in store, presenting our brand to the public. However, our sponsorship of the Actress category at the Bafta Cymru Awards was the most exciting. It is not all about the glitz and the glamour, Bafta is a charitable organisation that works with audiences of all ages and backgrounds to offer the public unique access to some of the world’s most inspiring talent through on-stage events, mentoring and ongoing projects, engaging with the minds of the future to create a positive domino effect to empower and inspire the youth of today. We are delighted to have forged a lasting relationship with Bafta Cymru and are looking forward to teaming up again in 2019 on a new event which will be announced soon - watch this space!” www.waterstonehomes.com
LAB 22
Cardiff’s bar scene has been steadily growing over the past few years, and this year the Welsh Capital has cemented its place among the top UK cities for cocktails. Lab 22 has been infamous throughout the city for its inventive and entertaining cocktails, and has now achieved national acclaim, coming away from the Imbibe Drinks List of the Year awards ceremony as winners of “Best Themed Menu 2018.” This is the first time any bar in Wales has picked up some silverware at the prestigious awards ceremony, making it a huge step forward in putting Cardiff on the map on the UK bar circuit. Lab 22 was shortlisted against some highly prestigious names on the UK bar scene for this award, such as Bristol’s Hyde & Co, Exeter’s Doctor Ink’s Curiosities, and London’s Dandelyan, currently ranked the best bar in the world. Having also been shortlisted in the UK top 50 cocktail bars of 2018 at #31, the bar and its team are on a roll. Lab 22 has always strived to push boundaries of what we think about cocktails, creating weird and wonderful, smoking and sparkling beverages to suit all who visit the venue. Judges praised the menu’s creativity and playfulness, stating that it “drips with personality.”
One of the judging panel, Stuart Bale, said, “It’s a crazy list. Every time I look at it I smile, and see something else I like.” “We’re absolutely over the moon with this achievement,” says Lab 22’s owner, Tani. “I think it is a testament to the commitment of the team and the hard work we have all put in. But we’re not done yet.” The future is looking bright for Lab 22, and Cardiff’s bar scene. Watch this space! www.lab22cardiff.com

’ve felt it all too often, the overwhelming disappointment at the discovery that a hotel’s “spa” feels more like an afterthought. And instead of a gorgeous haven of tranquility and relaxation there’s little more than a cramped room with a massage table, a miniscule sauna, and a plunge pool that is nowhere near as big as it looks in the pictures. Not so the Forum Spa at Celtic Manor, though. Not. At. All. For a start, it’s big. Not impersonally so, but big enough for you to find your own space to chill out, even on a busy day. The centrepiece of the Forum Spa is the pool – long enough to swim a few decent lengths if that’s your thing (and if you are

serious about your swimming then at certain times of the day there are lanes so you can proceed unencumbered) but if you just want to float and bob around a bit then that’s fine too. It’s not the size that makes it particularly impressive though, nor the spacious sauna, or the spa bath with its plethora of soothing bubble jets, but the huge floor to ceiling windows which look out over the lawns giving a real feel of space and light. And even if the sun isn’t shining, all you need to do is gaze up at the ceiling decorated with blue skies and white clouds and hundreds of tiny lights which begin to twinkle as the sun goes down. Back on dry land, there’s two relaxation areas – one bright and sunny, ideal for chilling out and chatting over a herbal tea, and the other cosy and softly lit for when you want to drift into a gentle slumber. The list of treatments is extensive, and there’s 16 treatments rooms, as well as a dedicated beauty bar for manicures, pedicures, make-up application and the like and it’s here that we head for our first treatment of the day. There’s a GELeration luxury pedicure for me (in my opinion there’s few things more of a treat than a bit of foot pampering) and I’ve booked the serial nail-biting husband in for a gentleman’s indulgent manicure. While my feet are being soaked, scrubbed and massaged,
and my toe nails painted a deep purple, he is next door having his nails filed, cuticles trimmed and, much to his bemusement, his hands encased in heated mittens. Once finished, we have just enough time for a brief refreshment break in the sunlit relaxation room before we are whisked away for our massages. I’m having a signature Forum massage which proclaims to use classic Swedish techniques to relax and de-stress. Before we begin my therapist asks me if there are any areas that need particular attention so I direct her to my seemingly permanently knotted shoulders and during the treatment she applies just enough pressure to ease the tension but without causing any discomfort. By the time she’s finished my muscles feel almost infinitely looser – not just in my shoulders, but all over – and I’m definitely more relaxed than when I went in. Comfort and joy EMMA DANCE finds out more about the work of Ronald McDonald House in Cardiff
charity
F
or most of us Christmas is a time of year that’s full of joy and celebration. It’s a time to be spent at home, with family and friends, relaxing and having fun. Imagine then, that you have a child who is seriously ill, and will be spending Christmas Day in hospital – perhaps many miles away from home – and the stress and strain that such a sad circumstance can put on the whole family. It’s in situations like this that Ronald McDonald House charities can help. Created to provide free accommodation for families with seriously ill children in hospital, they provide a home away from home, just a short distance from the wards. Ronald McDonald House in Cardiff is actually situated at the University of Hospital of Wales, almost next door to the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital. And, in fact, the children’s wards are even visible from some of the rooms, I’m told during my tour of the house. Opened in July 2017 the Ronald McDonald House Cardiff is the newest of the 14 houses around the UK, and the only one in Wales. Since opening, it’s provided accommodation
“There is always someone to talk to and the team are always thinking of ways to make life normal and fun in the house” for more than 800 families – more than 550 in 2018 alone. It’s invariably a sad reason that brings a family to the house, so every effort is made to make it as homely and uplifiting as possible – right down to details like linens being laundered with domestic products, rather than industrial, to ensure that they have a comforting and familiar smell. The bedrooms are bright and cheerful, with telephones linked directly to the hospital wards so that parents can be contacted any time, day or night. And there are communal lounges and kitchens where families are encouraged to mingle. There’s even an outdoor space and a playground for visiting children. Some families may just need to stay for a night or two, others longer – the longest continual stay in Cardiff was 318 nights. And many will need to come back several times. And, of course, it’s not just Christmas when it’s needed. Open 365 days a year
Ronald McDonald House sees celebrations throughout the year including birthdays, Halloween and even held pamper evenings for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day to give parents a treat at a particularly difficult time. This summer the house celebrated its first birthday with a party for families that have benefitted from the facility. Michelle and Wes Gee know only too well just how much difference having a facility like Ronald McDonald House can make. They’ve stayed a total of 342 nights in Cardiff while their daughter Eden-Olive receives treatment. Michelle says, “There is always someone to talk to and the team are always thinking of ways to make life normal and fun in the house. The house feels like a second home to us now – there are always familiar faces as soon as we walk in the door that continually provide a source of comfort.” Use of the house is completely free for those in need, but in real terms, it costs around £25 a night to accommodate a family, and all the costs are met through fundraising and donations. Amy Hill, corporate fundraiser for South Wales, says, “There are lots of ways people can get involved with Ronald McDonald House charities, from volunteering to fundraising and whether you’re part of a community group or school wanting to hold a cake sale, or work for a company who would like to take part in a big challenge such as the Cardiff half marathon. As a charity we rely on the support of local businesses and organisations to help keep our lights on and our doors open for our families.” To find out more visit www.rmhc.org.uk

ce Arena Wales, home to Elite League ice hockey champions Cardiff Devils, has been renamed Viola Arena. The venue at Cardiff International Sports Village has acquired a five-year naming rights deal with Welsh financial institution, Viola, based in Bridgend. Viola Chairman, Christopher Hamilton, signed the deal with Todd Kelman, Managing Director of the Cardiff Devils and Ice Arena Wales, who says, “Our new partnership with Viola is a perfect
fit. Viola is a great, Welsh business with local roots, so it makes so much sense for them to be actively involved with us. It’s going to bring about such a mutually beneficial, positive change and I’m really looking forward to it.” The arena, which sees a quarter of a million visitors each year, is set to host a diverse range of events, including ice hockey, cage fighting and boxing. Christopher Hamilton says, “Renaming a prominent, Welsh capital landmark to ‘Viola Arena’ is not only a huge milestone

for us as a business from Wales, but also for the Arena itself. The rebranding will add so much desirability and diversity to what’s currently thought of as ‘just an ice rink’; we’re incredibly excited to see it transform into something spectacular.” Since its start up in 2015, alternative digital banking platform Viola has been offering financial products and services to a diverse client base, helping to simplify expenses. This rebranding is a first for Viola, who is looking forward to this substantial change. Christopher says, “Strengthening its appeal as a multi-facility, top-class venue will encourage more people to visit, and ultimately take the Arena
to new heights. We’re thrilled to support this journey to create lasting memories for many, whilst growing Viola’s presence within the South Wales community.” Christopher has an historic emotional connection with the site of the Arena, known as Cardiff Pointe. Back in 2007, he was involved in the site’s planning and development, which is now the home to Cardiff International Sports Village. He is delighted to return a decade later to help the venue flourish. “We hope to build a name for ourselves and be renowned for our financial services; this rebranding kick-starts what’s yet to come for us,” he says. JUDGEMENT DAY LOOMS… How Techniquest could look
BIG PLANS Techniquest has submitted a planning application for its £5.7m Science Capital project, which will see the radical transformation and expansion of its science discovery centre in Cardiff Bay. Planning has been submitted to extend the educational charity’s current building on Stuart Street to create an additional 900m2 of exhibition floor space. The scheme, designed by local architecture practice HLM, will significantly increase Techniquest’s footprint providing an additional 60 per cent exhibition space to house brand new innovative content related to, and developed with, Welsh STEM innovators, academics and communities. The new immersive and innovative exhibition areas and experiences will help Techniquest to diversify its audiences and increase visitor numbers by at least 40 per cent. Lesley Kirkpatrick, CEO of Techniquest says, “Since securing funding, it has been full steam
ahead in our Science Capital project. We’ve been working closely with our consultants to marry up our objectives, with the space we have available, and our ultimate goal of ensuring the charity has a sustainable and long-term future in Wales. “We’re delighted with the final plans, which are contemporary, inclusive, flexible and eye-catching. Gaining planning consent is naturally a crucial factor in the future of this project so we’re hopeful for a positive result.” As well as creating a new vibrant public entrance, the plans include a designated community space overlooking the Bay, a new café and shop, in addition to a roof terrace and courtyard designed to host interactive artworks and features to complement exhibitions. Subject to planning permission being granted, it is anticipated that work on the extension will commence in spring 2019, with the new space being open to the public by summer 2020. CHILD’S PLAY A leading insurance broker has made a generous donation to a Cardiff charity through its community grants programme. Towergate’s group charity, The Ardonagh Community Trust (ACT), has given £4,000 to The Hollies, a primary school in Pentwyn for children aged three to 11 years, who have special education needs. The grant from ACT will go towards a replacement nest swing for the children’s playground. Headteacher Lisa Marshall says, “Children with autism often prefer solitary play. To help further develop their play skills, the nest swing will encourage turn taking and social interaction but most importantly to have fun! With limited funds available to replace worn out equipment we are so pleased at the amount of money Towergate has given us.”

The NearmeNow app was launched in Cowbridge
Digital attraction Why social media and eCommerce is a friend and not a foe to independent retailers
By Gemma Gwilym
T
o say 2018 has been devastating for the British high street would be an understatement. In the first half of 2018 retailers including Homebase, Marks and Spencer, and House of Fraser have all announced store closures and potential job losses. Much of the decline has been attributed to the success of internet shopping, with almost one in every five pounds now spent online, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). But while the high street outlook is gloomy, independent retailers in Wales are bucking the trend. Around 91 per cent of retailers in Barry are run independently, while Cardiff and Penarth have embraced independents, with everything from coffee shops to fashion brands enjoying success. But many are still cautious about integrating social media and eCommerce. “This reluctance to push their brand online could be down to business owners fearing they
might lose custom in-store,” says NearMeNow founder Victoria Mann. According to Caerphilly-based entrepreneur Victoria, who founded the UK’s first digital high street app earlier this year, utilising smart technology doesn’t have to mean sacrificing customers. NearMeNow actually encourages shoppers to interact with local businesses online and informs them about deals, promotions, and offers in-store. Here Victoria offers advice on how business owners in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan can integrate social media and eCommerce, while still boosting high street footfall. Solving social media Social media can reach millions of potential customers worldwide – but it has its draw backs. Victoria says, “Social media is often used ineffectively. When it comes to urgent in-store advertising needs social media platforms may not be fit for purpose.
“Utilising a shared social media page, which is aimed specifically at local customers looking to make a purchase, is far more effective than posting blindly. Explore whether your town has a high street Facebook page, Instagram or Twitter account which you can utilise. “NearMeNow enables businesses to feature all their adverts, whether urgent or not, in one focussed digital space.” Creating a digital community Online shopping is detrimental to the overarching interests of independent businesses, with goal-orientated internet users getting in and out of websites without a glance at other stores. This is in total contrast to the organic shopping experience, according to Victoria, which sees people browse neighbouring shops and support high street growth. She says, “Online shopping lacks the community aspect which is fundamental for independent high street sustainability.” The NearMeNow founder suggests that businesses should encourage shoppers to explore other independents and work together to promote a healthier high street. She says, “Businesses should harness their collective power in the digital world in the same way they would in the high street to increase
footfall. “NearMeNow provides the benefits of the digital world, such as speed, reach and immediacy, while also promoting high street shopping.” Effective eCommerce The rise of eCommerce is often blamed for the high street’s woes – with the value of eCommerce sales in the UK estimated at £533 billion, according to government figures. But eCommerce doesn’t have to be detrimental, according to Victoria. She says, “eCommerce is understandably worrying for businesses. However, we can look at shoppers’ behaviour when using eCommerce and adapt this to help us improve in-store sales.” Victoria says that click and collect was a prime example of successfully integrating the digital and physical worlds of shopping. She adds, “This service is highly effective for business owners as it attracts footfall through the door while also utilising online sales methods. “Once in the store, customers can then get a sense of what is on offer and choose to come again. Ensuring your in-store click and collect service is streamlined and hassle-free will ensure return custom.” For more www.nearmenow.eu

Big ideas
Hot on the heels of the successful Introbiz Expo on 22 November, Introbiz co-owner TRACEY SMOLINSKI tells us more about the company, and the event… When and why did you start Introbiz? I launched Introbiz back in January 2009. I’ve always wanted my own business and to leave a legacy for my kids, whilst making an impact in the business community. I wanted to create a brand that my children could be proud of. The main goal was, and still is, to make an impact and a difference. For anyone who doesn’t know – can you tell us what Introbiz is all about? We are a people and connections business. We connect businesses at our weekly networking events, along with hosting Wales’ largest business expo, something we’re really proud of. Our events include ladies’ lunches, networking breakfasts, business clubs, Beaujolais Day, and power groups to name but a few. All our events are always hosted in four and five-star locations and we host eight different types of networking events. We also host training seminars on topics such as networking, social media and public speaking. Our events are popular because we
connect people with their target audience, ensuring they’re sitting together on tables and making personal introductions. Introbiz is not just about putting people in a room together and leaving them to it, we facilitate those introductions for their benefit. Who can get involved? Does it matter how big the business is? Anyone who is in business from start-ups and SME’s, to larger corporate companies. We welcome everyone who has a drive to expand their horizons.

By being part of the family, you build trust, which is important because companies will be referred if they are trusted, and there are lots of referrals happening in the network. We also offer a referral scheme so if anyone recommends joining Introbiz to another company, they get a ‘thank you for the business’ commission. We attract lots of visitors every week, meaning more new connections for the members, and therefore there is a constant influx of new people.
“The benefit is that We’re like one big family”
What are the benefits of being a part of Introbiz? Well, the benefit is that we’re like one big family. We help each other and refer business to one another – it’s an extremely supportive network. By Introbiz introducing businesses to one another, we’re breaking down
You’ve just hosted the Introbiz Expo – how did that go? It was a fantastic day. There wasn’t a moment that we weren’t busy because so many people attended. We were told many times there was a great vibe in the room. All our exhibitors were really pleased with what they gained from the day, with a record number of
visitors walking through the door. The queue to enter was rather long and although we don’t like queues and like to serve people quickly, it was a good problem to have. The queue displays the demand and scale of the expo. On top of this, it was lovely to see our seminar rooms busy throughout the day. It was an honour to have Lord Sugar and Grant and Elena Cardone providing their business expertise at our event; they generated such excitement in Cardiff. The expo was a massive success and I’m proud to say we managed to pull off the equivalent of four events in one day. What was your highlight? My highlight was hearing such positive feedback following the event. Everyone has been offering their praises and commenting how wonderful our team is. Without a doubt, having Lord Sugar and Grant and Elena Cardone was a highlight too. To have these iconic speakers at our event was a dream come true for us and we’re sure the business community here in Wales will agree. For more: www.introbiz.co.uk

PENNY WISE With 2019 looming large, we’ve asked a team of financial experts for their advice on how to make the most of your money during the coming year
What investment opportunities should I be looking at in 2019 and what should I be avoiding? Criag Palfrey, Penguin Wealth: Your
investment approach shouldn’t change from year to year when looking at traditional investment. The Financial Planning principles always apply – spend less than you earn, protect against disasters (illness or death) and invest wisely. Investing wisely means don’t put your eggs in one basket, spread your risk across the various assets and geographic areas that exist and, every year, rebalance your portfolio. The difference it makes to “rebalance” your portfolio for maximum long term returns is huge. Rebalancing is the simple art of regularly banking your profit from the areas that do well in one year and buying the ones that have not done so well – this small action can add huge value to a portfolio over time and is overlooked by many amateur and professional investors. Don’t try to pick next year’s winners – you may get lucky occasionally but more often than not it will break your heart and then put you off investing. Howard Patchell, CJCH Solicitors: In 2019 you should be looking at long term investments with good prospects for future growth. The Brexit period is likely to be turbulent and certainly in the short term values may very well

go down. Investments to be avoided are those stressing immediate returns rather than long term gain. Is there any new tax/financial legislation coming in during 2019 that is likely to affect me? CP: It’s great news for most as the personal
allowance is going up to £12,500 from April so you can earn more before you pay tax. There are other income tax allowances that most people aren’t aware of as there are always changes to tax rules, pensions legislation and the world position – get advice from a qualified accredited financial planning firm and include your accountant and solicitor, where applicable, in the process. HP: Tax and financial legislations are always
changing and rules of adjusting pension allowances are bound. If you have spare cash and haven’t taken full advantage of all pension allowances then bearing in mind plans for a long term growth, it could be an ideal way of maximising returns for the long term. Capital gains tax allowances for the year 2019/20 are increasing from £11,700 to £12,000 per individual and of course the higher rates of Capital Gains Tax payable also benefit from the higher personal allowances. From an inheritance tax point of view the stepped increase in dwelling house exemption where the property passes to children or grandchildren also increases in 2019/20 from £125,000 per person to £150,000 per person and of course this relief also has similar advantages of transferable zero rate band on the demise of the survivor who inherited from his or her spouse, the allowance will be £300,000 on top of the £650,000 zero rate transferable band allowance.
What effect do you think Brexit will have on pensions, savings, investments and house prices? Philip Payne, Mulberry Wealth Management: The impact of Brexit for me
falls into two distinct categories: the immediate short term and then the medium to longer term effect. Unfortunately the first category is very hard to predict as clearly there is a lot of emotional and irrational behaviour at present, combined with unprecedented political manoeuvring between the main two parties. In the short term pensions and investments can all be considered as one as they are generally linked to the stock market and depending on the risk and focus of the fund could be exposed to increased volatility over the coming year. A well diversified and risk adjusted portfolio should help to counter some of the effects of volatility and also provide for possible
“The Brexit period is likely to be turbulent” investment opportunity on the upside. I believe that in the short term, given the large degree of uncertainty house prices may also potentially suffer. It obviously depends to a large part where you are in the country. In London the market relies heavily on foreign buyers and as Brexit unfolds in the first half of 2019 they may decide to defer making a property purchase decision, lessening the overall demand in the market, which could have a knock on effect to other regions. Over the medium to longer term the impact of Brexit should have a lesser impact, certainly on pensions, investments and savings that are
www.mediaclash.co.uk I CARDIFF LIFE I 103
WEALTH MANAGEMENT committed to investment markets as these type of investments tend to be more global in their outlook anyway. If Brexit is having a more prolonged negative impact on the UK then investment managers will look to other markets to achieve investment returns. This again is another important reason to consider regular reviews of your portfolio as proper diversification can mean other asset classes can be introduced to lower correlation and direct exposure to only one or a few markets.
recommendation is to better understand the nature of the investment being considered, take a reasonable timeframe and ensure you have reserve and emergency funds set aside to meet necessary short term requirements and an allowance for unforeseen events. CP: Stay invested is key – don’t try to time the
market as time in the market always wins. You don’t change your assets/investment strategy to protect your assets, you make sure your wills are written correctly and, where applicable, ensure trusts are drafted correctly to protect your wealth from your children’s/ families future mistakes such as divorce or bankruptcy.
“Asset protection is something we should be considering whatever the financial climate” In a period of financial uncertainty, how can I protect my assets for my family’s future? Lisa Davies, Blake Morgan: People are
increasingly focusing on financial security in the light of Brexit and the uncertainty created around it. However, asset protection is something we should be considering whatever the political climate. Health and social factors can be detrimental to individual and family finances, but certain actions can help to minimise the effect. There are financial products worth looking into, such as critical illness cover and key person insurance for business owners, which support a family or business in the event of serious ill health. It may also be sensible to consider pre or post nuptial agreements to ensure money inherited by one spouse from their side of the family is retained by that party solely and kept out of the division of assets upon later separation or divorce. Trusts offer a flexible, tax-efficient structure to preserve and protect family wealth and can help families manage assets and protect vulnerable beneficiaries from themselves and third parties. Additionally, assets held in a discretionary trust are largely ring-fenced from the impact of divorce, bankruptcy or assessment for care home costs.
PP: Financial uncertainty is nothing new.
You could argue has there ever actually been a period of ‘financial certainty’, as there is constantly issues, threats, fears that impact investment markets whether locally like Brexit or internationally such as trade wars and foreign tensions. These considerations are all part of investing and it is a major reason why timescales should be viewed over the medium to longer term to smooth out investment volatility. Financial uncertainty also leads to the creation of investment opportunities and are a necessary part of achieving growth. To protect assets for a family’s future the best
104 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk
In terms of succession planning, what can I do beyond just making a will? Laith Khatib, Howells: The term “succession
planning” typically refers to a plan which is devised to manage the transfer of family wealth between generations. It is often put in place by people with large estates who are concerned about inheritance tax and related issues. Apart from determining who receives the estate ultimately there are usually three main aims: 1) to ensure the individual making the plan has adequate capital and income to meet their needs for life, 2) to maximise tax efficiency for the benefit of their descendants (or other heirs) on death, and 3) to ensure assets are not exposed to unacceptable risk because of the measures taken to implement the plan. The plan must obviously address what happens to the estate on death and a suitable will is therefore absolutely essential. However, it is often sensible for the suitability of wealth transfers before death to be considered as a
part of the process. This should help establish if it is possible to reduce the estate value on death without compromising financial independence and security in life. If lifetime gifts are appropriate then consideration should be given to whether they are made directly to individuals or to a trust. A trust is often used to protect against some risks that can arise if large payments are made to individuals i.e. divorce, bankruptcy, irresponsible money management etc. The suitability of a trust is something that must be considered on a case by case basis. A plan is best devised by a multi-disciplinary team involving a solicitor, an accountant and an independent financial adviser. If large irrevocable lifetime gifts are contemplated the financial adviser should assess whether the proposed gifts may adversely affect the donor’s ability to fund their desired lifestyle before a final decision is made. They can also consider whether an individual’s investment portfolio can be structured in a more inheritance tax efficient manner – which may avoid the need to make lifetime gifts. The accountant should obviously advise on the tax implications of the plan and the solicitor should put in place the legal documentation to give effect to it. PP: One of the key considerations we advise
all our clients on is to review and consider the nominations on their personal pension plans. Changes to pension rules introduced back in April 2015 mean an individual can ‘nominate’ a range of potential beneficiaries to receive their pension in the event of death. Having no nomination could mean that the pension fund is paid out to an individual’s estate, subject then to the laws of intestacy if no will and even worse potential inheritance tax if the value brings the estate above the threshold. A
WEALTH MANAGEMENT
simple nomination could mean the pension fund passes on, potentially tax free if the individual dies before age 75. It is possible to skip generations, ensuring a legacy for grandchildren if preferred and the nomination needn’t be to family either, meaning partners and close friends could also be considered. LD: When approaching retirement, special
consideration should be given to your changing financial position. A business owner considering selling their business and retiring will want to use the money from the sale to secure their family’s future. As long as certain conditions are met, Business Property Relief can reduce inheritance tax (IHT) by either 50 per cent or 100 per cent. This means that the value of the business might not have been chargeable to IHT, but any cash from its sale would be. It might therefore be worth holding the sale proceeds of a business in an investment portfolio that will continue to attract the tax relief, even if only whilst thinking about what to do with the money next. There were significant changes to pension legislation in 2015, which mean that pension pots have become more flexible. People now have more control over how much to take and when. For increasing numbers of people a significant part of their wealth will be in their pensions, but because these funds do not
106 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk
generally attract inheritance tax or even pass under a person’s will, it is easy to overlook them in estate planning. Anyone with a pension fund of more than around £150,000 should take expert advice on their options from a pension expert alongside a review of their will. Trusts have typically been one way to protect wealth and are useful as part of succession planning. They can be included in your will (and come into existence on death), or they can be set up in your lifetime. However, they have complex tax regimes once they are set up, so it is always worth taking legal advice. Putting money into trust over the inheritance tax threshold (currently £325,000 per person) can trigger an immediate 20 per cent charge to IHT. However, paying money into a company does not have the same tax consequences; so using a company structure for individuals could be a tax efficient planning tool. “Family Investment Companies” use similar principles to trusts where typically, decisionmaking rests with the senior members of the family (appointed as directors and possibly shareholders), whilst children or grandchildren can benefit from the profits of the company as shareholders. Proper planning requires a review of the whole of a person’s assets, including their
“We believe that anyone with wealth should have a trust” pension funds, along with their objectives for later life, intended beneficiaries and their overall tax position. CP: We believe that anyone with wealth should have a trust. Your will should, in our opinion, point your wealth to a trust so that the trust can ringfence your wealth from your families/ children’s future mistakes. You can also make sure that your wealth is distributed on your terms rather than handed over all at once. This can be a complex process so please do seek specialist advice – which we can help with. HP: In terms of succession planning beyond
making a will, consideration should be given to taking full advantages of IHT Reliefs currently applicable including the annual exemption of £3,000 per donor tax payer, the little used “gifts out of income allowance” and where the donor is comparatively young and the chances of surviving seven years after the gift are statistically high then passing over lump sums to the next generation sooner rather than later can establish that generation and reset the zero rate band allowances after seven years. A sole surviving individual having already had the benefit of the transferable zero rate band should always consider this (as indeed David Cameron’s mother did on the passing of his father).

Cardiff life awards 2018 PROPERTY WINNER
Design Management Partnership © STUDIO 87
Interior designer Rachel Jones tells us more about about life at Design Management Partnership, the winner of the 2018 Cardiff Life Property Award So how did it feel to win a Cardiff Life Award?
As a team of architects, interior designers and project managers working predominantly in the leisure and hospitality industry, we were up against some tough competition in our category – but all from varying backgrounds. We are constantly working to push ourselves from a design perspective to stay at the top of our game nationally. Winning the Property award within our home city has an extra sense of pride that our hard work and long hours, to accommodate our clients, is paying off.
is our specialty and it’s what we know and love. The directors within the company are all from architectural and interior design backgrounds, with key breweries as some of their previous employers – which set the company off on a good foot.
What plans do you have for DMP?
Continuing to pride ourselves on our ability to listen to our clients’ requirements and aspirations, interpreting these, and then delivering projects that we hope will always exceed expectations. Our success comes from not only pushing the boundaries of traditional and current design trends, depending on project specifics, but making the clients journey from conception to completion, as smooth as possible in a friendly and professional manner. Our team is ever growing and ever evolving and we hope to continue on our previous success in future years to come, in the same manner.
“Winning the Property award within our home city has an extra sense of pride”
Why do you think Design Management Partnership won?
We are the only company in Cardiff, within our field, that specialise in design within the leisure and hospitality industry. We are a small team with a hands on approach with all our clients, providing them with an individual service. We work hard to keep on top of the latest design trends and movements within our field and beyond. The last year was a particularly good year for DMP, with many Cardiff and South Wales projects under our wing. How did DMP come about?
DMP has been in business for more than 25 years and have always worked within the leisure and hospitality industry as well as the healthcare industry. Designing pubs
What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever been given?
Your performance will actually improve if you can commit to not only working hard but also unplugging, recharging, and renewing yourself. And what career advice would you give?
2017 saw us welcome a mentoring programme for college and university students. We are looking to work further alongside the interiors department at the USW to provide future designers with the opportunity to show us what they can do. My advice would be to grab every opportunity that comes your way – and feed off the knowledge of those
with the experience that is available to you. The best way to become a good designer is to learn from those who are already living and breathing it. And always keep drawing – the power of a pen and paper is far greater than the computer can ever be! What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on?
Jobs in the last year have ranged from a hot tub showroom and hospital CT Suites; street food outlets and Spanish cuisine restaurants; even stretching to numerous high volume turn over pubs and listed building hotels. The best part of my job is being able to work on all aspects of a project from start to completion and seeing our designs all over the country. What are the trends right now?
Currently we have been adding more depth and detail into our designs to raise its stature. This can include typography and graphics within the scheme whether that be hand sign written or neon illuminated. Also adding extra embellishments to furnishings and fixtures and creating more purposeful zones within the areas that we are creating. There are also big trends for floral prints and bold, colourful, botanic inspired patterns which have been popping up in lots of our schemes. Who are your design heroes?
I really enjoy exploring new places of interest. Recently I went to Barcelona and visited the Sagrada Familia designed by Antoni Gaudí. The temple was just breathtaking with so much concept and craftsmanship being expressed through its architecture. Within the building it exhibited techniques and materials which have been preserved and
also how it will be finished through modern intervention nearly 100 years after his death, which I find fascinating. What do you love most about being in Cardiff?
Cardiff is a great city, constantly expanding and evolving and has a really good design led culture. There are so many great businesses within this city, who we work alongside on a daily basis. There are constantly new buildings, interiors, brands etc popping up all over Cardiff, along with the individual, hand crafted businesses who can add that little something extra. There are so many great interiors within Cardiff that we are really proud to have worked on, and love being able to introduce to new clients. We have really seen our client base within Cardiff expand over the last few years – which is a sign of constant growth and the need for keeping up with the competition in the rest of the UK. Tell us your favourite bit of design/ architecture trivia …
An international design competition was set up by the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation in the 1990s to design a new permanent home for the Welsh National Opera, which was won by Zaha Hadid. The winning building was called the Crystal Necklace and was to be located near the inner harbour in Cardiff Bay, Unfortunately the project failed to win financial support from the Millennium Commission and Cardiff missed out on its own Zaha Hadid landmark. The Wales Millennium Centre was eventually built in its place.

ARTISAN INTERIORS
We find out more about Artisan Interiors, the winner of the 2018 Cardiff Life Homes & Interiors Award, from director Andy Brown © STUDIO 87
HOMES & INTERIORS WINNER SPONSORED BY
So how did it feel to win a Cardiff Life Award?
We were over the moon! Our showroom had only been open for 18 months when we won and it was the first time we’d been shortlisted for an award so we had no idea what to expect. It was great to have some recognition from the city that has given us our successful business. Why do you think Artisan Interiors won?
I think our hard work and passion for our business shone through, and the innovative way that we drive the business forward was mentioned by the judges. We’re constantly trying to build on what we have and make improvements to the way we operate.
selling and installing kitchens. I wanted to focus on one part of the kitchen process and the answer came in the form of Danny Borge, who I met through a mutual friend. He was running his own kitchen installation company so he took on the installations of the kitchens that I designed and sold. In 2016, Danny became a co-owner of Artisan Interiors and we opened our first Schüller kitchen showroom together later that year. What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever been given?
As a business owner, everything is your fault. Take responsibility for everything within your business.
How did you first get into interior design?
I was a kitchen fitter for many years but I originally trained to be a draughtsman so attention to detail is in my blood! About 12 years ago, I started designing the kitchens that I installed and it all went from there. How did Artisan Interiors come about?
I set up Artisan Interiors in 2013 after several years of designing,
and to see his high-end kitchen stealing the show on the ground floor.
What plans are there for Artisan Interiors?
We opened a Next 125 luxury kitchen showroom upstairs at our Penarth Road unit in May and we’re going to open an appliance showroom in early 2019 adjacent to the Next 125 displays. It will showcase high-end appliances by Miele, Liebherr and we’ll have the only BORA Extractor Hobs on display in Wales.
What’s the best part of your job?
I’ve stepped away from designing kitchens as we employ two interior designers now. My design experience is still put to good use though, designing and building the website. I think my favourite part of my job is creating new webpages, developing existing ones and making videos for the site.
What advice would you give someone looking to go into interior design?
What do you love most about being in Cardiff?
Be flexible with your ideas and listen to your brief. You can’t assume everyone will like what you like, design for your client and not for yourself. What project, that you’ve worked on at Artisan Interiors, are you most proud of and why?
“OUR HARD WORK AND PASSION FOR OUR BUSINESS SHONE THROUGH”
I designed a kitchen for a client’s new build in The Mumbles, Swansea. It was my first design using Next 125, he had a healthy budget, specific ideas and wanted a unique kitchen for his new home. There were lots of emails and meetings and we worked together to perfect the minimalist design that he wanted. It was very satisfying to visit the finished house

At the end of 1998 I moved in to London to work in specialist legal recruitment and then moved back to Cardiff in 2003 to be nearer family. In 2004 I opened TSR Legal with Robert Adams in Cardiff. What advice would you give to an employer? With the market so difficult and competitive in order to attract candidates every employer needs to offer candidates an excellent experience during the interview, so that the candidate comes away with the best possible overview of the company and what they can offer as an employer. It is imperative that when interviewing candidates, the employer is selling the company and the opportunity, as well as future prospects in the role and an overview of the company’s aspirations. As an agency we can do our best prior to interview, but if the employer then does nothing to assist in interview then it is a wasted exercise.

All I can say is that I don’t think anyone other than another recruiter really understands the amount of phone calls, Emails and day to day chasing that goes on in our offices and late into the night! How long have you worked in recruitment? Just over two years. Before that I worked as cabin crew in the Middle East. What areas of recruitment do you specialise in? I look after the temporary recruitment for Cardiff. I don’t specialise in a sector as temporary recruitment is required across all sectors. I think you hear about temporary recruitment more in industrial sectors as its usually high volume, whereas I also provide commercial temps in to a variety of professional services roles, both ad hoc and longer term. What are the most rewarding aspects of the job? It’s a cliché, but getting people their dream job. Oh, and winning business you’ve been chipping away at for months – there’s no better feeling. If you could give one bit of advice to a candidate what would it be? Be honest. Whether it’s not the job you thought it was or you have found another position, please keep your recruiter up to date. A lot can happen in a day and there is nothing worse than organising an interview and then the candidate just doesn’t show up.
What sets you apart from other recruitment companies? We’re part of a national group but work from a small office based in Cardiff city centre and like to think we add a more personal touch to recruitment for both our clients and candidates. We always meet everyone in person and take time and care to understand your needs. How long have you worked in recruitment? I’ve worked in recruitment for 5 1/2 years now. I started off in temporary recruitment, running a high volume desk which was really solid experience and gave me everything I needed to know about the recruitment process. I feel I’m more suited to the more commercial side of things, which goes hand in hand with the permanent recruitment that I do. What are the most rewarding aspects of the job? The most rewarding aspects of the job are helping candidates secure their dream roles. We work incredibly hard to find the right opportunities for our candidates as well as finding the right candidates for our clients. We meet with everyone face to face so we have a more personal connection with them and truly understand what they’re looking for. It’s lovely to then be able to pick up the phone with that offer for them! What areas of recruitment do you specialize in? I specialise Financial Services, Accounting and Law but generally work on most commercially biased vacancies, anything from Administration, Marketing and Accounting to Financial Controllers and Office Managers.

What are the misconceptions about recruitment? I hear all sorts of stories from candidates and clients about mistreatment and questionable practices and sometimes I feel sympathy for competitor consultants as the working environment can be very target driven. We have no such activity targets so do not pester, push or persuade anyone to do anything they are not comfortable with. How long have you worked in recruitment? I started in the early 2000s and recruited staff for the construction of the Cardiff Bay Barrage. I subsequently worked for a specialist Accountancy/Finance recruiter and a national Commercial agency. What advice would you give to an employer? Today’s employment market is definitely “candidate driven” meaning employers need to set realistic expectations not only of applicants but of themselves. If you see someone you like, move fast as they won’t be available for long! Tell us what your company does for charity or the community? A percentage of our fees are donated to our designated Charity of Year. To date we have donated to Ty Hafan, BrainsTrust and our chosen charity for the coming year is Alzheimer’s Cymru.

amilies rejoice… we have found your perfect home. Large, open-plan living spaces? Tick. Generously-sized bedrooms with en suites? Tick. Plenty of outdoor space? Tick. But that’s not all. Oh no. This house throws the likes of a large indoor swimming pool, gymnasium and cinema and games room all into the mix and the result makes for a truly exceptional home. Private is perhaps an understatement. Set within 15 acres of parkland, just six miles outside of Cardiff city centre, is the private and exclusive Cefn Mably Country Park gated development. And it’s here, behind its own electric gates and within an acre of beautifully manicured grounds (more of that later), that you will find the fantastic Cedar House. Built in 2003, and extended and remodelled since, Cedar House is what we would call “dressed to impress” throughout. Quality and style is evident from the moment you step foot into the impressive entrance hallway. Before you is a grand central staircase leading to the first floor and to the left and right are doors to the principle reception rooms. The generous study has a bay window to the front so you can enjoy leafy views out into the front garden while working or studying. The comfortable sitting room opposite
makes the most of the outlook through another bay window, and with a stone feature fireplace to snuggle in front of, it is a lovely room in which to take time out. Double doors from the hallway lead to the drawing room, another impressive reception room, boasting a feature fireplace and windows to the side and rear, as well as French doors out to the garden. With a large island at its centre, the bright and spacious kitchen of Cedar House is undoubtedly a place the whole family will gravitate to. The room is beautifully designed, with bespoke handmade units, and luxury built-in appliances, including an AGA. And washing up after supper will feel far less of a chore over its double Belfast sinks and garden outlook. The room is open to an equally bright and inviting dining room, which boasts French doors leading out to a large terrace. So far, what we have here is a generously proportioned family home. But as we mentioned, Cedar House has a few more bells and whistles up its sleeve. You would be forgiven for assuming the inner lobby leading from the kitchen is merely home to the utilities of the house. It’s true, a door from the lobby takes you to a well-equipped utility room and inner entrance to the triple – yes, triple – garage. But take the staircase up to the first floor instead, and you will find yourself at the entrance to the home’s leisure suite – a fantastic contemporary space, currently set up as a light and airy gym and fitness studio.

Unbelievably, the real wow factor is still to come though, as another set of double doors take you to a galleried balcony, which overlooks perhaps the most impressive home swimming pool we have ever set eyes on. The pool itself is huge and boasts windows to all sides, including four doors leading out to the garden. If you haven’t had enough play, the first floor is also home to a fantastic home cinema and games room. The fitted oak units give the room a sophisticated quality and we particularly approve of the built-in wine fridge – making it the backdrop to many a great movie night with family and friends. The master bedroom is luxurious and substantial, boasting a beautiful en suite with dramatic slate tiles, an oversized shower, his and hers sinks and a roll-top bath to die for. The luxury continues into the large dressing area and separate his and hers walk-in wardrobes. Three further bedrooms sit on the same floor, all with en suite facilities, and a further staircase takes you up to the second floor and a large bedroom with a dressing area and en suite bathroom. With all this going on inside Cedar House, there is barely room to talk about the grounds. But mention we must as they are, quite frankly, exceptional. Colourful gardens containing a sunken garden, summerhouse, pond and no less than two waterfalls, were designed by none other than Peter Dowle’s Howle Hill Nursery, winner of ten gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Show. There is also a vegetable garden to get stuck into, a large terrace for seasonal entertaining and breathtaking countryside views to enjoy any time of the year. n

CARDIFF LIVES
“I’m obsessed with food” and there, but earlier this year I finally bit the bullet. It’s paying off so far, and thanks to my foodie interests I’ve been approached to work on some really exciting stuff, including helping Great British Menu chef Tommy Heaney launch his pop up, and then his new restaurant in Pontcanna. I also loved working on the inaugural BITE festival at Insole Court over the summer; it was something really different for the city’s food festival scene.
Jane Cook Get to know the tree-hugging, Backstreet Boys loving, foodie… Hi Jane! Tell us a bit about yourself… I am a bit of a tree-hugger and have a huge passion for nature, but I am definitely a ‘city girl’ at heart. I was born and raised in Roath, ran away to live in London for a few years after graduation, and then came back to Cardiff to settle in Canton around five years ago. What is your job? How long have you been doing it? I have worked in PR and marketing for around 10 years. Earlier this year I decided to go freelance as a PR and content creator. My own clients range from chefs and restaurants to beauty salons, but I also work with a few local content marketing agencies to help them deliver campaigns and attract new clients of their own. How do you like to spend your free time? Eating out and cooking are the two big ones! I’m obsessed with food; making it, eating it, reading about it, the politics and the ethics of it – everything. When I have the time,
I also write for my own personal blog, www.hungrycityhippy. co.uk, and co-host a monthly food podcast, called Hank Cardiff. Aside from food, I like travelling when I can, and spending time in green spaces. Despite loving living in the city, I definitely enjoy the down-time away from people and concrete and cars – it’s good for the soul. Where in Cardiff do you live and what makes it special? I live in Canton, just off Victoria Park. It’s so well connected by public transport or on foot that we barely ever have to use our car, and there are loads of fab places to eat and drink on our doorstep. Having Llandaff village and the café culture of Pontcanna both within walking distance is great, too. What has been the highlight of your career so far? Probably taking the leap of faith that was needed to finally go freelance. I had spent years building up my contacts and dabbling in little side projects here

Who would you invite to your dream dinner party? Leonardo DiCaprio would be the first guest. I love his films and his environmental activism, and he’d get on well with David Attenborough, who’s also on the list. To keep everyone laughing, I’d ask Brett McKenzie and Jemaine Clement (from Flight of the Conchords) because I love their awkward sense of humour. Because I can’t be the only woman, I’d ask actress Sarah Paulson – she’s clever, sassy and gorgeous and seems like she can handle anything life throws at her. I’d want American chef Dan Barber to do the cooking; I went to a food-waste pop-up restaurant he curated at Selfridges in London last year and it was incredible. When did you last cry, and why? I actually cry quite easily, I think it’s healthy not to bottle things up. I tend to get quite frustrated and weepy watching nature documentaries these days because the world’s wildlife populations are basically heading for collapse, but I feel like we’re all just burying our heads in the sand. It’s something me and Dave would have to have a serious chat about at my dinner party. What’s your guiltiest pleasure? The Backstreet Boys. They’re pants, and I know it, but my teenage self will not let me give them up. I have every album and know every word to every song (even the new ones). I know, it’s bad.
What’s your favourite piece of clothing? It’s not an item of clothing, it’s a piece of jewellery; a chunky, gold, art-deco ring from my late nana. I also have a gold chain that used to belong to her which I’m having melted down and made into the bands for my wedding next year. There’s an artist based at Sustainable Studios on Dumballs Road who’ll be doing it for us. Favourite places to eat/drink and shop in Cardiff? The Cardiff Farmers Markets are awesome; the Riverside one celebrated its 20th anniversary in October and is more popular than ever. It’s a great place if you like to cook – I go there to pick up fruit, veg, and other fresh produce and actually speak to the people who make it, something that’s increasingly rare these days. I also love the old arcades in town for a browse and a coffee-stop, and I’m looking forward to visiting Ripple in Roath; when it opens, it will be Cardiff’s first not-for-profit, zero waste lifestyle shop. Tell us about a secret/ underrated Cardiff spot we might not be aware of… Wrights Wines on the first-floor balcony inside Castle Arcade feels like a little hide-away from the world. It’s a specialist natural wine shop owned by the same family as Wrights Food Emporium in Carmarthen. They sell unique wines by small producers, many that you can’t get anywhere else in Wales. You can also sit-in and try a few by the glass whilst nibbling on local cheese and homemade chutneys. We’d better let you get on…. What are you doing as soon as you’ve done this? Thanks, I’ve got a blog post I need to finish before I head out to a CIPR networking event. I am sure I’ll end up catching up with some old colleagues over a few drinks afterwards! n For more: www.talktojanepr.co.uk / www.hungrycityhippy.co.uk
