T

he main problem of putting an art feature together for this issue was that there are just too many brilliant artists knocking about in Exeter; it was impossible to squeeze them all in. What was easier was choosing the front cover. The painting of transparent jellyfish gliding through mossy-green waters by artist Charlotte Fleming had me gazing at it curiously, and in awe, much the same way you do with real live water inhabitants at an aquarium. But I guess that’s the power of art; to transport you to a different place so you can get lost for a while. Charlotte says “They [jellyfish] swim through my imagination where they float out of the gloom, beautiful and ethereal in white ink.” You can read more about Charlotte and the other amazing local artistic talent on page 14 – luckily for us, they’re all exhibiting this summer so there are plenty of chances to have your own gaze-in-wonder moment. And on page 28 we explore what’s on offer in the wedding sector paying particular attention to venues, food, fashion and jewellery. We all know it’s been an industry hard hit so we’re thrilled to shine a light on these local businesses, while finding out what’s on trend for this year. Spoiler alert, it includes furry guests and guzzling espresso Martinis. Sounds pretty good to us. We also have our bumper Exeter Living Awards Preview. Check out our amazing finalists on page 42, this year’s fabulous judges and all the need-to-know info about the big, glam night on page 45. It’s not quite party time, but it soon will be. We can’t wait. ExeterTogether, always.

CLOCKWISE: Lewis, aka LP Edits, and his colourful, disruptive art

Art

INNER SPACE Exeter-based Lewis, the mastermind behind artist LP Edits, has taken the leap into a dedicated gallery space in The Guildhall Shopping Centre. Transforming the old Coffee Pot unit into a modern art oasis in the city, Lewis prefers not to put a label on his art but refers to it as abstract at times, taking inspiration from urban

contemporary pop art. LP Edits pieces first started springing up two years ago, with his piece dedicated to Prodigy’s Keith Flint. Since then, he has painted a large piece on the side of the The Bowling Green Pub and an amazing mural in the Nightingale Hospital in Exeter. Lewis has some grand plans for the space in the Guildhall,

transforming it each time for a new opening and producing art as he tries to keep up with its rapid sell outs! See page 26 for images of the launch event. Follow LP Edits on Instagram (where he has over 21.5k followers) for information on when his gallery opens to the public. For more, Instagram: @lpeditsuk

OPINION JP HEDGE

Back in the day, JP was a wedding photographer

For wed it’s worth JP gives his top tips on planning (and enjoying) your big day

M

y heart goes out to anyone who has been trying to plan a wedding over the past 18 months. Along with births and deaths, it has been one of the most difficult and emotional life events to try to conduct in a pandemic. There is light at the end of the tunnel. And Exeter and the region are bursting with hugely talented and brilliant individuals linked to the sector. It isn’t of course just couples who have struggled, some of our best and brilliant venues have been on their knees over the past year and a half. Support for the wedding sector has been a common thread at the city’s recovery group – where the private and public sector are still meeting regularly to share information and help make the transition back into real life. I can tell you that no-one is going to be more determined to make sure you have a good day. If

you get the right people around you, you are going to have the best time. And Greater Exeter has those people in spades. I love weddings. Unfortunately, I’m old enough now that everyone I know has gone through that chapter in life. I’m too young for my children and nieces and nephews to be at that stage. I’ve also been privileged enough to have a bird’s eye view on so many special days. When I worked as a photojournalist for a paper, I also worked as a wedding photographer on weekends for a second income for my then new family. I had over a hundred special days captured before hanging up my lenses and changing careers. One special day even got caught up in the documentary series The Hotel. My skill set, as I found out, was reportage. That is capturing the real-life events as they unfolded. There were, of course, the set pieces, but for me the magic of the memories lay in the little details

“If it rains, it rains. This is the first day of your new chapter, and there will be more rainy days to come”

that were part of the couple’s chemistry. It was their personality – personified. For what it is worth, I picked up some tips on the way. When it comes to planning, don’t be afraid of celebrating your life up until now. This should be your love personified. It is highly likely you will be bounced into things that are perhaps expected, or tradition, or part of a package deal, or will keep your Nan happy. That’s before you make concessions for each other. You won’t go far wrong by sticking to things that are about you. Also, deep breath, but the day is unlikely to unfold as you imagine it will reading this today. There are things you can control, and things you can’t. If you frame the day in order to relax around everything in that second box, you’ll have a stunning day and brilliant memories. Because if it rains, it rains. This is the first day of your new chapter, and there will absolutely be more rainy days to come. Going with the flow on certain things will help set the tempo for life’s rich ups and downs to come. I saw some stunning results with brides that added mindfulness to their epic to-do lists. Because, despite what may be years of planning, the day will go in a blink of an eye. If there is any opportunity to be mindful, grab it and hold onto it for

dear life. Feel your feet, any chance you get. If you are getting married in a church and that is a part of your lives, embrace any wedding courses or chats with the Vicar. It may feel uncomfortable but there are some fantastic ones out there, particularly by the charity Care For The Family. Lastly, you won’t regret creating yourself an easy to find cloud storage and let your guests know you will want their pics. With smartphones you get some brilliant points of views that you couldn’t possibly experience yourself on the day. My wife and I didn’t do this. Ten years on we are still discovering images and memories we haven’t seen. Lastly – everything doesn’t need to cost a fortune. There will be significant costs whatever, so prioritise that spend on the things that are important to you. If you can, avoid going into significant debt to pay for the day. You’ll be together, forever, and there are lots of other fun things to fund just around the corner. Have the best time and here’s to your future. Our amazing wedding sector is ready and waiting for you. ■ JP is a director at Exeter City Council and is responsible for Culture, Tourism and Leisure. He lives in the city with his wife and young children.

ARTS

ART OF THE CITY Up-and-coming artists, new workshops, and a flurry of summer exhibitions are arriving in Exeter. Here’s a taster of what’s to come…

F

By Harriet Noble

rom Exeter Cathedral to a chalet on a beach in Exmouth, from quirky cafés to gallery spaces – art is all around us in Devon. And going by the volume of summer exhibitions and new workshops popping up all over the city, this sector looks set to flourish even further. Perhaps it’s the timing; Sophie Legrand from Art Club Exeter talks about the feedback from recent classes, how people have really responded to the calming, therapeutic aspect of art. After such a tough year it seems art, whether you’re making it or simply gazing at it, is just what we need right now.

CHARLOTTE FLEMING, FLEMING & SELL

Charlotte runs the art gallery and homeware store Fleming & Sell, in Topsham, where she has her studio (and sells her work). Visitors can watch her at work, creating her marvellous underworld creatures. “I draw almost every day, using a dip pen and ink on both paper and canvas, often on a large scale with some pieces as big as two metres,” says Charlotte. “It seems to me that I have been under the sea in my imagination for a long time and jellyfish appear in my work again and again. These jellyfish have come to represent my emotions and feelings. They are alone in the deep, dark, vast seas and seem to represent something to me about how we are in our world too. They drift onto the canvas out of the dark intricate and delicate, like lace. In my work, they aren’t anatomically correct, I don’t research them, they swim through my imagination where they float out of the gloom, beautiful and ethereal in white ink.” Charlotte also works in her rural painting studio, Black Studios, in Higher Metcombe and will be opening the studio up for Devon Open Studios in September. ARTS Surrounded by the sea: Ella Slade in her chalet gallery

ELLA SLADE, ELLA’S

Ella Slade runs her own gallery called Ella’s, one of the new-ish chalets on the Sideshore development by the beach in Exmouth. Here she paints and sells her coastline-inspired art as well as homeware products. Ella’s has only been open since December of last year but she has already won the Environmental Impact Award from the Exmouth Chamber of Commerce Business Awards for her environmentally sustainable business. Step inside Ella’s and you’ll see interiors made from a range of up-cycled materials, from scaffolding boards to vintage langoustine pot lights, with earrings made from recycled silver and blended up seaweed with eco resin and recycled tin candle pots. She uses brown paper bags, paper tape and recycled tissue paper for wrapping gifts and anything sold is processed using a card machine made from recycled sea waste. Furthermore, all the artists displaying work in Ella’s are local or have an environmental ethos behind them. Throughout July and August Ella will be hosting her Sustainable Sourced exhibition. “It is inspired by some of our local beaches and people, alongside summer seascapes,” says Ella. “Local people, family and friends have been donating they’re retired items for me to renovate and upcycle, to produce a piece of environmentally conscious art.” Ella will also be taking part in the Devon Open Studios this September, when she’ll be painting some large-scale seascapes right on the beach in Exmouth outside her studio. ART CLUB EXETER

Zoe Barlow and Sophie Legrand provide art sessions for toddlers, children and adults in venues around the city, including John Lewis, Pura Vida café on Well Street, Sidwell Bakehouse on Sidwell Street and Kids Hub Coffee on Paris Street. “The idea is to facilitate non-prescriptive workshops where people can create, socialise and relax for an hour or two,” says Sophie. “We design all our projects for kids and adults around an original theme for every session. We have a strong community and well-being ethos; we believe that art can be soothing and bring people together.” Zoe and Sophie have several themes planned for this year, starting with four botanical workshops throughout July. From September onwards, themed classes will include Dans La Maison, Geometric Collage, Feline and Flora, And I’m feeling good, Cityscapes and Landscapes. “In all of them, we encourage people to try out different techniques such as inks, watercolour, drawing, collage, etc.” adds Sophie. “Our Pura Vida workshops have been blissful. It’s a trendy and cool venue that instantly gets people in the mood for creating and socialising. It is really relaxed and we bring our own playlist too. Everyone leaves with a happy smile on their face. The word that always comes back in every session from our attendees is ‘therapeutic’ which is one of our purposes. “We received a Covid grant during the first lockdown and made art packs for care homes, children on Universal free meals, and people isolated in the community. They were appreciated and we were delighted to help!” www.artclubexeter.org

Powderham Castle: artist and curator Anna FitzGerald carries Hello Mr Stoat

POWDERHAM CASTLE

On 26 July, Powderham Castle Gallery will open its doors to the public for the very first time. The gallery space itself is something worth visiting; think two large adjoining rooms with grand fireplaces and access to the artist open studios via a secret staircase! To kick off the opening of this gallery space, two simultaneous exhibitions will be running, both of which are set to be curious and colourful affairs. Fabulous Beasts will be a collaborative exhibition of collage and taxidermy exploring all things animal within the magical setting of Powderham Castle, featuring the work of Janec van Veen and Jane Perkins. Heaven on Earth, curated by Anna FitzGerald and Madalen Dixon, will explore the extraordinary within the ordinary. Both exhibitions will run until 30 September. From 12–23 September the Castle will also host Forests and Feasts exhibition, a celebration of Devon’s finest creative minds, with local artists being asked to reflect on the bountiful history of Powderham to create a modern narrative. Throughout the exhibition there will be artist demos, interactive storytelling, dancing, poetry, an open bar with a finale party on 24 September, featuring music performances. THE GLORIOUS ART HOUSE CAFÉ

Fancy making some Frida Kahlo knickers?

The colourful café and art space has undergone a refurb, with the upstairs room now taking on a strong Moroccan feel with its oranges and blues, while Mediterranean vibes pervade in the aqua green and white combo on the stairs and hallways. “I did a lot more tiling and also finally got around to making a mosaic behind the sink using our broken mugs and plates that we lost over the years, but could never bring myself to throw away,” says owner Rosy Tydeman. As part of the refurb, there’s also now a little retail area, where you can pick up mugs, hot chocolate and chai powders, and also artist materials. Rosy is hosting an exhibition called Inside, Outside which runs until 26 July. She’ll also be re-starting her knicker-making classes shortly. DEVON OPEN STUDIOS

Devon is positively teeming with fantastic artists and the annual event showcases this amazing local talent. Running from 11– 26 September, Devon Open Studios gives art enthusiasts the opportunity to meet artists in their studios in some of the most beautiful, unexplored parts of Devon. See the artists at work, buy their work and chat to them about their work and what inspires them. “This will be the third year I have taken part in the event,” says artist Liese Webley. “I love exhibiting and opening up my creative space for visitors. It is such a unique opportunity for artists to show their work, and also a fantastic opportunity to widen their audience and meet new people.” Various locations; www.devonartistnetwork.co.uk

The gallery is hosting Art Dayz between 24 July –14 August. Expect familyfriendly art activities which will take place on Exmouth’s seafront and in the Creative Cabin with Exmouth artist Anna Fitzgerald, sand artist Paul Burton and storyteller Jaz Brown. Families will be invited to have a go at making seaweed pressings, drawing labyrinths in the sand and making sand body casts. In Plain Sight exhibition runs from 27 August – 30 October and will see major new works from The London Group and key works from the THG collection and private loans. Meraki is a Greek word that means to do something with soul, creativity, or love – it refers to instances when you put ‘something of yourself ’ into what you’re doing, and that’s just what we wanted our art school to be about. Tell us a little about your journey towards starting this art school...

What can young people expect when they attend?

Our classes will be a wonderful opportunity to explore different mediums and techniques, and to make friends with like-minded creatives! Through Meraki Art School young people will be able to get involved in global art projects, use art to contribute positively to their communities and most importantly focus on developing their individual expression.

“Young people will be able to get involved in global art projects”

This is a story of two friends with a shared passion for art, education and community who enjoy pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. We knew if we wanted to see an art school in Exeter then we would have to practice what we preach, be brave and create one ourselves! Chloe has worked in teaching and leadership for 16 years, she is also an artist teacher as well as a specialist leader of education and international coordinator. She is currently studying towards a Master Degree in Arts Education. I have a background in PR and marketing, I’m also a photographer and digital designer with over a decade of experience in education, youth work and community support initiatives.

What sort of workshops will you be offering?

Our workshops will be based around big, bold and exciting themes that are current, educational and relevant to young people. Each set of workshops will culminate in opportunities for young people to publicly exhibit their artwork, which we hope will foster pride and confidence in the next generation of artists. Tell us about the next few months...

We’ve got such an action packed summer! We’re excited to be involved with Guildfest in Exeter and The Craft Festival in Bovey Tracey, our workshops will be a great opportunity for children and parents to get creative and have some fun in the sun. We will also be holding a series of free taster sessions throughout August, before launching our first set of routine classes in September. n www.merakiartschool.co.uk

SUMMER NIGHTS

The Exploding Bakery has announced their summer series of chef takeovers, with a stellar bunch of culinary wizards to host feasts of seasonal celebrations. Co-founders Tom Oxford and Oliver Coysh have invited some of their favourite restaurants, cooks and chefs to take to the pass for one night only. “We’re looking forward to a summer of feasting with friends and family,” say Tom and Oliver. “We’ve invited an incredible line-up of chefs from London and the South coast to help us do just that, joining us at The Exploding Bakery for the summer series. After a long winter, it’s the perfect time of year for a bit of celebration.” Abby Lee of London’s Mambow on 9 July A Malaysian-style supper club drawing on Abby’s favourite recipes from her childhood, with fresh herbs and punchy spices at the foundation of every dish. Courses include Siew yuk, pieces of crispy pork belly to dip into a fiery ginger chilli sauce, along with Sambal hijau, a green sambal made with bird’s eye chillies and fresh lime leaves.

Jane Baxter of Wild Artichokes on 20 August South Devon chefs Jane Baxter and Sam Miller were the first chefs at the restaurant at Riverford Farm, Field Kitchen, before going on to launch their own project, Wild Artichokes in Kingsbridge. They will be cooking up a rustic four-course Puglian feast. The proceedings will start with an Italian antipasto spread, then primi pasta for sharing, grilled meat and fish for the main course, ending with a traditional Italian dolce. Clare Lattin and Tom Hill of Duck Soup and Little Duck in September (exact date tbc) Clare Lattin and Tom Hill will host a special late summer harvest feast at Cider House, Find & Foster’s nearby apple orchard. Taking inspiration from the traditional French farmers’ lunches during harvest, trestle tables dressed in white will nestle among the apple trees, strewn with simple crockery and glass tumblers. Diners will sit under the apple trees enjoying a fitting appley aperitif to begin, followed by wine, bread, a harvest soup and roast chicken. FIRE, FEAST AND FUN

TOP LEFT: Your very own chef on site; ABOVE: Food straight from the fire; LEFT: Feast your eyes on the boho glamping décor

If the idea of glamping, but without any of the cooking responsibilities, appeals to you then this summer’s Feast and Fire events could be just the ticket for you. Throughout July and August, MAJU, the new glamping site in Exminster will be hosting threecourse rustic forest feasts for their visitors. These communal gatherings will be set in a theatre of a 300-acre ancient woodland, taking you on a nomadic journey where Michelin-star trained chefs, Ben Thompson of Pit and Plate and Bruce Clyne-Watson of Feast Alba will show off their asado cooking techniques, creating a melting pot of flavours straight from the local larder. There will also be local live bands to accompany the woodland bar and street food, as well as on-site yoga lessons and life drawing classes. Come bedtime, you’ll be sleeping in boho canvas bell tents. “We want to bring the community together, by creating a platform for guests and locals to enjoy,” says co-founder Liberty Barrett. “Running through the months of July and August, MAJU Glamping will be the place to hang out for any local this summer.” MAJU Glamping, Hartgrove Hill Farm, Trinity Hill Road, Axminster, www.majuuk.com

PYNES HOUSE Pynes House is a hidden gem of a country house nestled in the Exe Valley just outside Exeter. You approach along a tree-lined avenue from which guests will have their first glimpse of the historic property. The house has a choice of large state rooms for the ceremony, plus reception rooms; equally you can choose to have your reception outside in the extensive grounds. “Our rose gardens are just coming into bloom and the terrace is the perfect spot for drinks and canapés or even al fresco dining around the fountain,” says owner Kate Tilley. “We also have lawns for a spot of croquet and/or marquees, a private woodland, and endless backdrops for photo opportunities! “Our vibe is very much a country house retreat for couples and their guests to enjoy for a weekend or few days.” What’s trending this year? “The after-dinner cocktail hour is proving very popular – espresso Martinis served after dinner help pep everyone up after their delicious meal ready for the party!” adds Kate. The numbers: Pynes House can seat 96 in the ballroom for an indoor reception or you can go big and use the large lawn and marquees. There are 12 double bedrooms (so can sleep 24), plus they have a few rollaway beds for extra children. Pynes House, Upton Pyne Hill, Exeter; www.pyneshouse.co.uk

t’s been a tough old time for the wedding industry. And while it’s not fully back to the way it was, with some restrictions still in place, the venues near Exeter are up and running and joyous weddings of a reasonable size are back. In Devon, we have a huge advantage to hosting a not-quite-out-ofthe-Covid-woods wedding – and that is, there is space. Lots of it. The elegant country houses that put on boho chic weddings with al fresco dining all sit within acres and acres of land, so there is all the happy stuff of a country wedding without any of the worry about being cooped up. We’ve looked at a handful of venues, jewellers, fashion boutiques and food companies to find out what the latest trends are.

DEER’S LEAP “Our weddings are likened to festival weddings, rustic but with all the luxuries you may want and need,” says Jess Pearson from Deer’s Leap. “It has all the basics covered so that you can simply add your personal touches; think of a DIY wedding but without the stress.” The farmhouse, bridal suite and glamping village are set in two acres of gardens, surrounded by a further 15 acres of farmland, situated on the edge of Exmoor’s national park. The indoor wedding reception venue is the rustic stone barn which has a private bar with sofas and comfy chairs, exposed wooden beams and packs a punch on atmosphere. There is also a large wood-burning fire, stone flagged flooring with large doors opening out onto the sun drenched south facing patio, which overlooks the lake. This patio area provides a relaxed area for sipping champagne or cocktails, while family and friends can play lawn games on the large adjacent lawn. And if you fancy doing the whole shindig outside, you can have your ceremony in a

lakeside wooden gazebo, followed by the reception in a stretch canopy. “As night falls, the whole feeling changes with fire pits lit, fairy lights and festoon lighting leading the guests down to the lantern lit lake for fireworks reflecting in the water fired to your own special song,” adds Jess. Anything quirky: Every year, co-owner Heather March holds a celebratory weekend for all her past and future couples. Last year, because she couldn’t hold the annual event due to Covid, she sent all the couples a beautiful handmade cream tea hamper. Nice, eh? The numbers: The lakeside gazebo takes 150 people, as does the stone barn, and 41 guests can stay overnight. For those staying the night, there is a jacuzzi, sauna, and BBQ. Deer’s Leap Retreat, West Anstey, South Molton, Devon; www.deersleapweddings.co.uk HESTERCOMBE A bit further afield is Hestercombe, a quintessential romantic English countryside house near Taunton. Licenced for civil ceremonies, couples can enjoy their ceremony, drinks reception, wedding breakfast and evening party in variety of indoor and outdoor locations. The entire wedding party has access to the full estate for the wedding day – fifty acres of beautiful gardens and a collection of historical buildings to enjoy. It’s also a wedding photographer’s dream with a picturesque backdrop of lakes, cascades, temples, rills, sun-dappled pathways and romantic corners. What’s trending this year: “We’re not sure if people have had more time to bond with their pets during lockdown, but we’ve had more requests than ever to have furry friends at the wedding in some way,” says Hestercombe’s Heather Christian. The numbers: 112 for the wedding breakfast, 150 plus for the evening. Hestercombe, Taunton; www.hestercombe.com

WEDDINGS POWDERHAM CASTLE The castle and grounds make up one of the most stunning and romantic wedding venues in Devon with four fantastic licenced venues from the rustic charm of the old riding school, to the magical woodland garden, the historic belvedere tower with its breath-taking views and marquee site, and, of course, the 600-year old showstopping castle. “Our most popular indoor space is the music room, also known as the secret ball room, due to the secret door from the library – there are numerous secret doors all around the castle,” says Chloe Mills, weddings and functions manager at Powderham Castle. “The views from the tall glass door and bay windows over the estuary will amaze, with steps down leading to the Rose Garden. It’s home to our recently refurbished organ and grand piano, and the spectacular dome is the most magical cover for a first married dance.” What’s trending this year: “Sparklers are very popular at the moment, as they are a romantic and memorable way to finish the night. Food vans are very on-trend for evening food at the moment, offering everything from pizza, to hog roasts, to fish and chips.” The numbers: 16 can stay the night, and there are self-catering kitchens. Powderham Castle, Exeter, Devon; www.powderham.co.uk

DREAMY DRESSES

What’s popular in wedding fashion at the moment?

“Trends at the moment include detachable accessories such as sleeves or overskirts which can give your dress such a different look when you go from daytime to evening. “More simple fabrics are popular at the moment such as timeless crepe and the softest of satins which are more lightweight nowadays. “Hair accessories include beautiful pearls either in a simple vine or statement headband which is perfectly on-trend.” Marian Couch, owner of Pirouette, The House that Moved, 24 West Street, Exeter; pirouettethecollection.com

FOOD OF LOVE

What are couples asking for when it comes to menus?

“Well, pre-pandemic we saw a rise in sharing food; mezzes, grazing tables, rustic sharing food, large and indulgent sharing dessert stations but at the moment we’re seeing many of our clients opting for a plated style of dining, mainly for safety reasons. “Our plated options include: stuffed vine tomato with local crab and oak smoked salmon, avocado mayo and micro herbs (starter); honey and soy roasted duck breast, five spice mash, confit peppers, chilli, ginger, sauté pak choi and an aromatic jus (main course); celeriac steak, red wine lentils, porcini mushrooms, fine green beans, walnut and caper sauce (vegan main course). What is the most popular dessert on your menu?

“Taste of Devon trio: Uffculme dark chocolate torte, local clotted cream and poached rhubarb pannacotta, Luscombe apple cider sorbet.” Any cool, summery drinks?

“A drink we’ve seen popping up a lot more at weddings recently is the classic Italian Aperol Spritz, which is served in large balloon glasses with plenty of slices of fresh orange for garnish and perhaps even a sprig of Rosemary – the perfect balance of dry, sweet and bitter flavours. This drink is really refreshing on a hot day (not to mention colourful and a treat for the eyes!) WEDDINGS SET IN STONE

Classic, colourful and bespoke – here’s a selection of wedding jewellery from Exeter boutiques

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE WEDDING JEWELLERY PIECES? “I love to use naturally coloured stones including diamonds and sapphires in engagement rings as they are hard wearing and durable for jewellery which is going to be worn every day. These stones can come in a range of golden tones as well as oranges, pinks, blues and greens. Often colour stones are teamed with white diamonds either as a trilogy or by having diamonds down each shoulder.”

WHAT ARE YOU GETTING A LOT OF REQUESTS FOR? “Personalised wedding rings will always be popular – engraving or having secret stones set inside of the band conveys a special meaning to the wearer. I rework a lot of jewellery using sentimental gold or stones which adds additional meaning to the rings. I am thrilled that customers are also beginning to question the ethics around their jewellery and although I use eco (recycled) gold as standard they are choosing to have their rings made in Fairtrade Gold.” Erin Cox, from Erin Cox Jewellery, 14 Castle Street, Exeter; www.erincox.co.uk

“We are seeing a revival in gents jewellery”

This collection comes from Michael Spiers Jewellers

WHAT’S PROVING POPULAR THIS YEAR? “Classic diamond solitaire rings are still our best sellers with platinum the most popular choice and there is a growing trend among young couples towards choosing 18ct yellow gold. Those looking for something a little bit different will choose more statement cuts – such as heart, emerald and oval. These stunning centrepiece diamonds are then surrounded by smaller intricate diamonds to create a really pretty sparkly engagement ring.”

WHAT ABOUT THE GENTS? “We are seeing a revival in gents jewellery. Classic signet rings and cufflinks have always been staple wedding pieces for the groom as well as fantastic best man gifts. “There has been a shift in men wanting to be a bit more adventurous with their jewellery. From black diamond bracelets to stunning FOPE jewellery to extravagant silver GUCCI pieces – we are very much experiencing evolving attitudes towards jewellery amongst our male customers. “Watches continue to be a favoured wedding day gift – with brands ranging from Tissot to OMEGA to Rolex.” James Walker, director at Michael Spiers Jewellers, 22 Cathedral Yard, Exeter; www.michaelspiers.co.uk

applies will be invited to take part in a virtual investor readiness training day with training sessions, after which 15 start-ups will be selected to go through to Pitchfest. “Pitchfest is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your business to a room full of people who can help it to grow,” says Ben Voysey of SETSquared, the organisers. “Ideally, we are looking for businesses that are expecting growth through investment in the near future. The training given to all applicants will provide valuable support and an opportunity to learn from each other as well as the experts.” For more: www.swinnovationexpo.co.uk

Sew and behold A new haberdashery has opened in the village of Whimple. Seam Haberdashery sells British yarns, new and vintage fabric, trimmings and lace as well as sewing and knitting kits, buttons and buckles. The store owner Michelle Moinzadeh teaches Fashion and Textiles at Further Education in Devon, and plans to offer knitting, sewing, embroidery and printing/ dying classes and workshops at the new store. “I want to encourage making, using traditional

textile skills,” says Michelle. “I am convinced that if you learn to make or repair your own clothes, you will not need to buy or throw away garments so often. I am also keen to share making skills. As a child growing up in Iran, going shopping meant seeing making everywhere – furniture makers next to jewellers or weavers spinning on a loom. I would love to see more makers on our high streets and see how and where my purchases have been made.” For more: www.seam.network

JOIN THE CLUB!

Our latest live Exeter Living Business Club was held via Zoom on 9 June and was an events special, focusing on the city’s long-awaited gatherings after a year of pressing pause on social meet-ups. Joining us were Derry Tydeman from Powderham Castle, Oli Mason from Gone Wild Festival, Nikki Fairclough from Exeter Guildhall and Yvan Williams from Exeter Chamber, who all provided insights into how the sector has fared over the last year and what is in store for the future. “The events industry in general is incredibly versatile and resilient, finding ways to overcome challenges and get their offerings to customers,” said Derry. “Whether it be digital or adapting from any traditional setups, there’s often been a way to think around this.” “We want to encourage people to come along for the two days of 7 – 8 August [for the Guildfest Rooftop Market Festival ]and enjoy the weather,” added Nikki. “We’re very keen to have events like this re-occurring such as food/drinks pop-ups, cinema offerings, all that sort of entertainment.” If you missed the Business Club, you can watch it now on our YouTube channel. www.mediaclash.co.uk / YouTube: @ExeterLiving

Co-owners of Bluebird Care Exeter, Sara Flint and William Flint

EXETER LIVING AWARDS 2020 BLUEBIRD CARE EXETER won the Health & Wellbeing award at last year’s ceremony. Here, co-owner William Flint tells us about positives from the past year and how the business is expanding How did it feel to win an Exeter Living award?

We were very excited to be included in the list of finalists. Winning was the cherry on the cake. It’s so wonderful for the team to have their hard work recognised.

Where do you keep your award?

Our award is in pride of place in our Cowick Street office to remind the team of their achievement. Why do you think you won?

The CQC recognises us as an ‘outstanding’ care provider. We take pride in being the best we can be and going above and beyond for our customers. Our application reflected the work we do locally to support older people and the effort we put into being an employer who invests in their people. You provide home care to people in the local area. How has business been during this challenging period?

The business has grown in the pandemic more than we expected. More customers wish to remain in their own homes with their possessions and memories. Our live-in care service has grown and doubled in the last year.

HEALTH & WELLBEING WINNER The business has supported customers throughout this time by going shopping weekly, taking them to vaccinations, hospital appointments, Zoom calls with family and friends. Care assistants have been reassuring and comforting our customers during this past year by supporting them daily in any way they can. Weekly welfare checks on customers and staff have now become the new normal. Has your business model had to change?

Our business model has not changed; it has adapted to meet the challenges of Covid. We set up a task force before lockdown happened and altered our ways of working around guidance and legislation from the government. We embraced different ways of working with the use of Microsoft Teams across all our hubs. Communication between the office staff improved; we would all speak daily and support each other.

Have there been any positives from this time?

Lots of positives! We have recruited staff from diverse careers who have embraced career change and flourished as excellent care assistants. Most importantly, we kept our team and our customer safe during this unprecedented time. What plans are in place for the rest of this year?

The business is expanding to West and North Devon. We have a new local head of operations and a hub manager for the office we will soon be opening in Tavistock. We are very excited to be delivering outstanding care in rural areas. We are excited at the thought of hosting our annual carer awards

“WEEKLY WELFARE CHECKS ON CUSTOMERS AND STAFF HAVE NOW BECOME THE NEW NORMAL”

in August and the return of our wellbeing service, taking our customers and carers on trips throughout Devon. We have also delayed our 10th birthday celebrations until we can throw a big party later in the year – fingers crossed! What do you love most about Exeter?

I love the variety of businesses in the city – the easy access to the country and the sea and the relentless positivity of our local community.

What have you learnt about Exeter and its people during the pandemic?

That people are inherently good. Our Exeter community came together during the pandemic to help those in need; the first lockdown brought out the best in people. Also that our local businesses are creative and adaptable; it’s a beautiful community to belong to.

Nature finds a home in Chudleigh

A

new show home giving people a glimpse of what life will be like in the charming Devon market town of Chudleigh has been unveiled by housebuilder, Wainhomes. The four-bedroom Manaton property is one of a collection of just 48 two-, three- and fourbedroom homes at The Leighs development, nestled at the foot of the spectacular Haldon Hills between Exeter and Newton Abbot. A peaceful retreat The show home has been designed with nature in mind, reflecting its tranquil, semi-rural location. There are relaxing and earthy natural pastel tones, timber furniture which gives a sense of the great outdoors and an array of plants, flora and fauna to complete the experience. There’s even a tribute to the town’s famous hedgehog population. All of which is perfect for the setting with Dartmoor National Park on the doorstep and all the outdoor activities of the Teign Valley close by. Perfect for Modern Life As with all the homes at The Leighs, the Manaton has been designed to maximise space and support modern family living. There is a spacious and contemporary open plan kitchen/diner, four generous bedrooms 60 I EXETER LIVING I www.mediaclash.co.uk

WAINHOMES properties provide luxury living in a stunning location with a luxury en suite to the master bedroom, a large and inviting family lounge and plenty of space to store the coats and muddy boots after a day out in the countryside. The homes include Wainhomes’ typical high specifications and the exteriors, with their mix of tasteful coloured renders and natural brick finishes, offer buyers individuality and create a varied and attractive street scene. Who’s buying? Wainhomes has already sold a number of new homes off-plan at The Leighs and, according to sales manager Sue Albrow, the development is attracting growing families who value a great work/life balance. “The Leighs is perfect for people who commute to work, being within easy reach of the A38 and M5,”says Sue. “Exeter and Newton Abbot are very close, Plymouth is just 40 minutes away and further afield, rail links from Exeter connect with Bristol, London Paddington, London Waterloo, North Devon and Cornwall. Exeter Airport is also handy, being within a 20-minute drive. “However, The Leighs also provides a base for those who want to explore and enjoy nature and even work from home. There are fantastic rural views, walks and activities and the town itself has all the amenities a family needs, with the added benefit of having a small village feel.” ■

A home that works for you RIVERSIDE MEADOW is located in the popular town of Topsham, offering beautiful homes in a safe and friendly environment

L

ooking for luxury living in Topsham exclusively for the over 50’s? Riverside Meadow, nestled on the banks of the River Exe in the picturesque and highly desirable town of Topsham is an exciting development of 20 luxury detached, bungalow-style park homes. There are four styles of brand-new homes to choose from, all of which come fully furnished in a choice of colour schemes. Each home offers a beautiful light and airy style with contemporary kitchens, bathrooms, two level parking spaces and spacious ‘blank canvas’ gardens to make your very own. We pride ourselves on providing residents with a safe, secure environment with a neighbourly community feel. I have been looking at several residential parks in the area, what is special about Riverside Meadow? Riverside Meadow is a residential park that is licensed for permanently occupied homes. We do not allow subletting, renting or holiday homes on the park, ensuring a real community feel with safety and security for all our residents. It is not a retirement community, and we actively welcome working residents, full or part-time. Once you’ve chosen your preferred plot location, we’ll guide and assist you through the process of selecting the perfect home for you. All the

62 I EXETER LIVING I www.mediaclash.co.uk

homes here are brand-new and chosen by you, allowing you to be involved in the design, layout and finishing touches from the beginning.

“ THE PARK IS VERY WELL LOOKED AFTER, IT IS THE NICEST PARK IN THE AREA. ALL THE COMMUNAL AREAS ARE VERY NEAT AND TIDY, AND EVERYONE IS VERY FRIENDLY HERE.” June Harry, park resident

What’s great about the area? One of the key reasons our residents love it here is the great location. Topsham is a delightful compact little town offering churches, surgeries, independent shops, a post office, library and numerous cafés, bars, and restaurants. There is an Aldi supermarket next door and a handy bus stop directly outside the park providing quick access to Exeter city centre and the popular towns of Exmouth and Sidmouth.

“ I LOVE IT HERE. EVERYTHING IS ON YOUR DOORSTEP; THE SITE IS WELL KEPT AND YOU FEEL SECURE. YOU ALWAYS FEEL THERE’S SOMEONE YOU CAN CALL ON.” Mary Swann, park resident Who owns and runs Riverside Meadow? As a local family business, Wilson Leisure Limited

has over 40 years’ experience in the industry. We take a personal and friendly approach to everything we do and are extremely proud of the high-quality park communities we create. Penny Hardick, the park owner, provides outstanding service and customer care, both throughout the buying process and once you are happily settled in as residents. ■

TREASLAKE FARM Fancy living it up in an idyllic country house while running a holiday letting business on the side? By Imogen Davidson-Smith www.mediaclash.co.uk I EXETER LIVING I 63

I

f you’re after a tidy block of cement for your next home with a stampsized garden out the back, this one is certainly not for you. If, however, you’re yearning for something big and adventurous, this gorgeous property might just be the ticket. There is a lot going on here – it is something more akin to a hamlet – but for just the right kind of owner this will be the big dream. Treaslake Farm is a five-bedroom property sat within extensive grounds, with seven holiday cottages which you can let out to holiday makers who want a piece of Devon living for a week or two. It’s located on the outskirts of the pretty village of Buckerell, within the East Devon countryside. The village is well-placed to access a number of popular towns, as well as the spectacular Jurassic Coast and the surrounding countryside. Let’s look at where you’d be sleeping. The first impressions are pretty spectacular: thatched roof, higgledly-piggedly windows and what looks like, at least, four cottages from a Thomas Hardy novel that have been sandwiched together to make a big, sprawling haven to explore. Inside it’s been refurbished by the current owners, preserving the original character features,

to create a spacious family home, which extends to over 3,400 sq. ft. At the heart of the house is the kitchen/breakfast room, complete with limestone floor, oak worktops, a four-oven AGA and an American style fridge freezer. There are two roomy reception rooms; a sitting room with a wood burner and an inglenook fireplace, and a dining room with exposed beams and a window seat. Also on the ground floor is a study, accessed via the dining room, a laundry room, office, utility room and cloakroom. Located on the first floor are five double bedrooms, all with high ceilings and character features. On the landing there is an attractive mullion window, thought to originate from the 1700s. The light and spacious double aspect master bedroom has fitted wardrobes and an en suite bathroom with modern tiling and a large walk-in shower. And on to the cottages, which can be hired out to holiday makers. There are traditional thatched ones, contemporary ones, one has an indoor pool attached, and they’ve all got lovely rural names such as Owl, Mallard, Squirrel, Otter, Stream, Rose and Badger. Step outside and the gardens and grounds at Treaslake Farm extend to approximately 13.57 acres. The current owners have created a number of different areas within the gardens which are suitable for al fresco dining and entertaining, providing ample space for each of the

cottages to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. A private driveway approaches the main house and leads towards the garages, where there is space for numerous vehicles to park. A pretty stream runs through the gardens and a wooden footbridge allows access over the stream, where there is a large hen run that has been newly built by the current owners. There is also a large, well-fenced pond, surrounded by a variety of attractive foliage including an ornamental willow tree. The stream also runs through the front garden, where there is a level area of lawn with green foliage. To the rear of the main property and the cottages are two well-fenced paddocks, plus more large areas of level lawn. Currently there are facilities from the holiday letting business, such as a playground, football field, covered barbecue area with an attached patio looking out over the fields. There are also a number of outbuildings at Treaslake Farm, all in good condition including four garages, an attached bike shed, a storage shed/log store, two stables, a games room, and play house. It’s not difficult to see why someone would want to holiday here but for the right person you can live here, running the business (which, I think, we can safely say will do well if the trend for holidaying in Devon continues) and enjoying those rolling green hills. n

JUST VISITING

“Sidmouth has given us some of the best gigs”

I love your rendition of Abba’s Does your Mother Know on YouTube. You seem a pretty happy bunch…

Thanks! We had a lot of fun doing that, and it was great to have something silly to focus on during what was a bit of a difficult time. We can be joyful! But not always... You’re playing at Sidmouth Folk Festival, what can we expect from you?

GRANNY’S ATTIC Folk band Granny’s Attic are playing at Sidmouth Folk Festival this August. One third of the band, Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne, tells us about the joy of gigging again... Granny’s Attic is made up of Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne (melodeon, anglo concertina, vocals), George Sansome (guitar, vocals) and Lewis Wood (violin, vocals). The trio will be playing an evening concert as part of A Celebration of Sidmouth Folk Festival on 3 August in a line-up with Jackie Oates and John Spiers. Cohen will also play a solo set as part of daytime entertainment in Blackmore Gardens. Cohen, tell us how the band came to be?

We met at secondary school in Worcester, where we grew up, and we started playing together in 2009.

You’re a trio, what different personalities does each member bring to the group?

That’s quite hard to say. We’re all quite different as people, but sometimes it’s hard to differentiate which influences and ideas come from where. It seems to work though; we’ve been together for almost 12 years now and we don’t seem to be slowing down yet! What got you into folk music and who are your inspirations?

Some of our biggest influences are Pete & Chris Coe, Spiers & Boden, John Kirkpatrick, Tony Rose, Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick. They were all really important in getting us into folk music.

66 I EXETER LIVING I www.mediaclash.co.uk

We’ll be playing lots of traditional songs and tunes. Some joyful ones, some dance tunes, and some sad ones too. We’ll play some old favourites, some music from our 2019 album Wheels of The World, and then some tunes from our new album which is being released later this year. What are your highlights from playing at Sidmouth in previous years?

We’ve visited Sidmouth several times as the band and as individuals (performing, and as punters), and Sidmouth has consistently given us some of the best gigs of our careers. There’s always great music, good sessions, lovely people – and some great vegan food too. How has the last year been for you? How did you manage to rehearse?

Lockdown has been challenging for us, as it has for lots of people. However, we have managed to keep in regular contact and remain creative. We worked on new material, and got used to practising over Skype! A lot of the time when we were making music remotely, we each recorded our own part and then Lewis stitched the audio together so we could hear what we all sounded like together. We got so much music together that we ended up making a new

album that we’re releasing later this year. What are your ambitions for the band?

At the moment, the big dream is to return to live gigging and touring; getting back to the lifestyle that we love! It might also be nice to spend a bit less time staring at computer screens and more time playing in the same room together – we’re definitely looking forward to that. Where are your favourite hangout spots in Devon?

We recorded our third album Wheels of the World with Sean Lakeman on the edge of Dartmoor, and really loved being there. We managed to go for a few walks in our downtime and absolutely loved the dramatic landscape. And when we’re at Sidmouth, it’s always lovely to head to the beach or the coastal path for a nice walk and some lush views! Lastly, who would play each of you in a movie about the band?

Jack Black would play all three of us. n
