Take advantage of the change of seasons and find new ways to step up for sustainability this fall. From delicious recipes to décor inspiration, here are three tips:

1. leave the leaves

Falling leaves signal the arrival of autumn. Instead of raking and throwing them away in plastic garbage bags, consider leaving them on your lawn. Leaves play an important role in the health and natural cycles of plants and soil – leaving them can improve your garden and lawn.

If you’d prefer to remove the leaves, consider composting them instead of throwing them away. If your municipality doesn’t pick up yard waste, it’s easy to start composting at home.

2. decorate using nature

When it comes to fall holidays, it’s time to pull out the decorations

you stored away last year. While you shouldn’t throw out the ones you already own, try to avoid purchasing new plastic decorations and use natural options if you need more. Pinecones, leaves and flowers can all be used to create a wreath or other decorative pieces. There is endless colourful and creative inspiration to be found in nature.

3. embrace seasonal recipes

Warm up with a delicious fall meal like chicken stew in a slow cooker. As slow cookers use less energy over a long period of time, they give off fewer emissions than a conventional oven.

As a bonus – you might have leftovers, so you can spend less on food for the rest of the week. Choose chicken and other proteins from companies that are prioritizing ecofriendly initiatives, such as Maple Leaf Foods, which is a carbon-neutral food company. ■

There are more one-person households in Canada than any other kind, according to the most recent census.

While living alone might be a choice, it may also be the result of a life change, such as losing a spouse or relocating. But experts say it can be a positive experience that allows us to enjoy our own company.

As the stomach is known as a window to the heart, meal prep offers easy opportunities for selffulfillment. Here are some tips for helping this happen:

Plan ahead. Take time to review your schedule and understand your needs for the week. Once these details are confirmed, you will be better suited to plan. Make

note of when you’d like to eat out or order in.

Shop smart. Once you plan your meals, make a list with the required quantities. Shopping smart means buying items that will last all week and just enough to ensure nothing spoils. Keeping a balance of canned, frozen and fresh foods will help you get the most out of your food.

Prep ahead. Pick one day to prepare core meal items for the week.

Investing time up front greatly cuts down the overall time needed. For example, if you’re a dessert lover, make cookie dough in advance and freeze single cookie-sized portions.

Treat yourself. Pick a day each week to create an experience. Make your meal an event and create a beautiful place-setting with your favourite flowers and music. You could treat yourself and order in.

Invite a friend. Plan a get-together with friends and family. Much like eating a balanced meal is good for your body, finding a balance between the joys of eating alone and with others is good for your emotional health. Look for opportunities to share the experience. ■

Bigger isn’t always better. Small spaces have proven to be the preferred living option for many of us since they require less maintenance, cleaning and budget for furnishing and renovations. However, adding personality and making the most of a small living space can be a challenge. Sharon Grech, Benjamin Moore colour and design expert shares her tips on how to make the most of a small space.

invest in multi-purpose furniture

Instead of filling the room with separate pieces for different purposes, invest in furniture that serves more than one function. Consider a sofa that can easily transform into a bed, allowing your living room to double as a guest bedroom. Alter-

natively, opt for a coffee table that you can extend or adjust in height to serve as a dining table or workspace when needed.

Colour creates distinction between spaces without the need for a physical room-divider. While it can be tempting to go for one light hue to make a space feel bigger, using different colours on a wall can create separation and make it multifunctional. A bold colour, for example, can signal to the mind that this area is for work.

Grech explains, “Colour affects humans psychologically. Offices painted in blues or greens tend to be less distracting and even improve concentration, where warm reds, yellows and oranges bring

When dealing with a small living space, it’s essential to think beyond the floor area and make use of vertical space. Your walls can be used for additional storage or to create the illusion of a larger space. There’s an old rule in business: what is not in writing was never said. Although some agreements may need just a handshake, others that involve a multitude of variables require a contract so that all the parties understand what is expected of them. This is particularly true when you hire professional movers.

You’re obviously the “who,” but we also need to know exactly “what,” “where” and “when” in order to transport your items to your new place. Within those general categories, there can be many details, and finding out about them on moving day is counterproductive. Think ahead.

The first thing to do is find a reputable mover. You can check online with the Better Business Bureau or the Canadian Association of Movers, and of course, find out who friends and family members have used. Select a company that has a tried-and-true track record. Then ask questions, and remember that the movers should be asking you a lot of questions as well to determine exactly what the move will entail.

When we meet customers to arrange their move, we need to know about everything they expect to take so we can prepare and accurate an estimate as possible.

In many ways, estimating is a science. Computers help, but the results are only as good as the information we input. Telling us on moving day that you forgot you want to take the shed in the backyard can hold things up for hours. It will also add to your costs.

And speaking of costs, we need to know well ahead of time if you want us to provide the service of packing. Deciding this two days before the move likely won’t work. In addition, if we have quoted only on moving and not on packing, a new contract will have to be drawn up with a higher price. If you do the packing yourself, read the contract as to whether or how much your items are covered, should damages occur.

We also have to know whether you have anything other than Point A to Point B in mind for moving day. If you forgot to tell us that your din-

ing room set has to be dropped off somewhere else first, it’s like the meter running in a taxicab. You will pay more for unexpected side trips. Plus, unless we know in advance, we may pack the dining set in an awkward place for unloading partway to your destination. Again, this will cost you time and money – two things that are precious commodities on moving day.

It is our responsibility as professional movers to ask the right questions, but until we develop ESP, we need to rely on you to explain what you need from us. A contract protects you as much as the movers, but only if you read it, understand it and abide by it.
