how to pack safely BY CHUCK RESNICK

When it comes to moving, a little common sense goes a long way in transporting your belongings to your destination so that they arrive in good shape and on time.

C

onsidering the importance our “stuff” has in making us feel comfortable in our surroundings, these items deserve special thought and care. Thinking ahead is the best thing you can do when it comes to making arrangements, packing, etc. Organization should be your mantra, efficiency your goal. If you are doing the packing, look ahead to lifting, stacking and unpacking the boxes during your move. People often run to the grocery or liquor store to pick up cartons, and then use newspaper as cushioning. Although this approach can save you a few dollars, in the long run, you may pay for it in stress, time and broken items.

Common sense dictates that heavier items be packed in smaller boxes, and vice versa. Instead, think about purchasing cartons and packing paper from the professional mover you’ve chosen. The boxes come in uniform small, medium and large sizes, which are easy to stack in a moving truck or van. Trust me, this convenience is huge on moving day. Unlike newspaper, packing paper does not leave behind ink that then has to be cleaned during an already hectic time in your life. During the packing itself, be generous with whatever you are using to

cushion your things, especially fragile items. People often cram too much in each box in an attempt to keep the number of cartons down. As good as that sounds, it can backfire, as too many items with not enough cushioning may shift during transportation and damage each other. In addition, someone will have to lift each box and place it into the moving vehicle. Packing too many heavy items into one container can result in no one being able to pick it up, or worse yet, the box breaking from the weight. Common sense dictates that heavier items be packed in smaller boxes, and vice versa. And did I mention labeling? Again, a little common sense goes a long way to success at the other end. When you pack the moving vehicle, remember to place the boxes you’ll need first, last—and label accordingly with the contents and which room it goes into. Even better, if you are driving to your next residence, place things such as garbage bags,

tissues, dish liquid, etc. into the car. You should also carry valuables such as jewelry, your laptop, important papers and the like separately from the bulk of your items. Another way to apply common sense to packing is to look at each item with the thought, do I really need or use this? Especially if you are moving from a house into a condominium suite or apartment, paring down possessions is important. The fewer things you move, the less your move will cost in terms of time and money. And speaking of money, if your budget allows, hire movers to do your packing and transporting. We do this every day, and we have it all down to an efficient system. Professional movers want our moves to go smoothly as much as our clients do. Everyone is born with common sense, but few use it. If you are planning a move, I encourage you to be one of those savvy few! Visit www. twomen.ca for a location near you. ■

How to banish

pet odours D

ogs, cats, birds, and lizards have evolved from wild animals and outdoor companions to become beloved, largely domesticated members of the family. The number of pets in homes across the country continues to grow. According to Statista, as of March 2017, 94.2 million cats and 89.7 million dogs were estimated to live in the United States as pets. Canada’s Pet Wellness report estimates that there

are approximately 7.9 million cats and 5.9 million dogs in Canada. Over time, pet owners grow accustomed to their pets’ antics, messes and even their odours. Dealing with smells is par for the course for pet owners, and many become desensitized to certain common smells. But when company is on the way or people are thinking about selling their homes, pet odors must be addressed. Even though it will take effort, homeowners can freshen their homes and eliminate unpleasant pet-related smells.

Cats and dogs can leave behind fur, dander, food messes, and more. Eliminating the debris that pets create can reduce odors. Sweeping, vacuuming and mopping floors can help as well. Air purifiers can help remove odours and allergens from the air.

They’re relatively inexpensive and can be placed in rooms that pets frequent.

Launder pet beds, cloth toys, blankets, and any other items that pets lounge on. Sweat, saliva and dander can cause these fabrics to become stinky, and, in turn, make the house smell worse.

keep pets clean

Most pets are very good at selfgrooming, but can benefit from a spa treatment once in awhile. Dogs that spend ample time outdoors or frequently get wet and dirty may need routine baths. Ask a professional groomer what he or she recommends to address potent pet odours. Neutralizing pet odours takes effort, but it can make for a more pleasant-smelling home environment. ■ — Metro Creative

A realistic guide to

organic food I n a perfect world, chemicals would not be needed to produce any foods, all of which would be made in sustainable conditions and from all-natural ingredients. But even the most ecoconscious foodie routinely faces difficult decisions at the grocery store. The Organic Trade Association says organic food is the fastest-growing sector of the food industry, and organic food now accounts for more than 5 percent of total food sales. While many people understand the benefits to consuming organic produce, such foods tend to cost more, compromising shoppers’ budgets as a result. Making smart choices and getting the facts about organic food can help consumers make informed decisions.

Smarter organic choices

According to the food and health resource the Environmental Working Group, certain fruits and vegetables are more likely to feature residual pesticides than others. They dub these foods the “Dirty Dozen,” which include strawberries, spinach, nectarines, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, pears, tomatoes, celery, potatoes, and sweet bell peppers. Shoppers who cannot afford strictly organic foods can opt for non-organic items that are less likely to contain residual pesticides.

Fearing antibiotics

Many people are concerned about milk, meat and poultry treated with antibiotics. Organic foods are antibiotic-free. The Food and Drug Administration has strict guidelines

4Rent.ca

October 1–15, 2021

in place to phase out the use of antibiotics in food animals to enhance growth or improve feed efficiency. They’re also requiring farmers to select strains of microbials that are less medically important to humans who would need them to treat disease. This means that conventional milk, meat and poultry may contain less antibiotics than consumers know.

To be “organic,” foods produced and sold in the United States and Canada must be shown to conserve natural resources and be devoid of GMOs Organic and pesticides

To be “organic,” foods produced and sold in the United States and Canada must be shown to conserve natural resources and be devoid of GMOs, among other requirements. However, USDA organic certification allows for natural substances, such as pheromones, vaccines for animals and a limited number of natural pesticides. Also, a 2011 survey by the USDA showed 39 percent of 571 organic samples were found to have pesticide residues, but well below tolerance levels set by the EPA. Therefore, pesticide-free and organic are not exclusive. Organic foods are seen as a healthy alternative to foods that do not fall into this category. While there are many positive reasons to go organic, including conventional foods in one’s diet is not necessarily unhealthy. ■ — Metro Creative

Fort Garry Hotel, Winnipeg, Manitoba

Both a National Historic Site and a fully-functioning hotel, The Fort Garry Hotel is said to be a top contender on the list of the most haunt-

ed places in Canada. Built in 1913, guests over the years have reported witnessing ghost-like apparitions in the halls, hearing eerie noises, and experiencing hair-raising feelings of a ‘presence.’

Hart Massey and his family. Legend states that after the death of Massey’s daughter Lillian, her maid was so overcome with grief that she took her own life. A ghostly image of a maid hanging by her neck has frequently been reported at the property.

airmont Banff Springs F Hotel, Banff, Alberta

Opened in June of 1888, this is the site of a number of terrifying ghost sittings, including an entire murdered family. Many believe a retired head bellman in uniform continues to haunt the hotel.

Ottawa Jail Hostel, Ottawa, Ontario

Built in the early 1860’s, this former jailhouse converted hostel was built next door to the courthouse, and connected by a tunnel. The infamous jailhouse saw a number of executions right up until 1942, including that of an assassin who murdered an esteemed politician. In 1972, the building closed until it was purchased and converted into a hostel while retaining the initial structure. To date, it’s believed to be one of the most haunted places in all of Canada. Many guests claim to have heard children and women crying, and a ghostly specter at the foot of their beds. Haunted places dot the country and can make interesting travel locations for those who wish to discover what goes bump in the night. ■

calm the chaos

on busy school mornings

M

ornings can test the patience and stamina of busy families as adults and children hurry to get out the door on time. Starting off the morning already stressed can lead to feeling tense throughout the rest of the day. There is no magic formula to make mornings less hectic, but the following are some ways families can streamline their morning routines. • Make use of the night before. Morning madness may come about due to lack of preparation the previous night. The more that can be done the night before, the less there will be to do on weekday mornings. Encourage children to lay out clothes for the next day and take a shower or bath that evening. Make lunches the night before a school day, and gather all supplies from homework

stations, restocking backpacks and gym bags so everything is ready to go come the morning. • Get to bed earlier. Sleep experts say that if you need to rely on an alarm clock to get up in the morning, you may not be getting enough sleep. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children should get between nine and 11 hours of sleep a night. Teenagers require between eight and 10 hours of sleep per night, while adults need between seven and nine hours. A good night’s rest can reduce morning crankiness and get everyone moving more efficiently. • Incentivize timeliness for kids. Children who are reluctant to head to school may need extra motivation to get out the door. Offer small rewards to kids when they get

ready on their own or finish breakfast in a certain amount of time. Rewards can include a treat like choosing a favourite show to watch after school or a special outing on the weekend. • Follow a schedule. Make mornings the same each day so everyone knows what to expect. Uniformity can streamline tasks and ensure everyone knows what’s expected of them. • Stay organized. Racing around trying to find keys or jackets can be very stressful. Make it a point to return items to their proper places so that everyone knows where to look for the items they need. School mornings can be challenging, but with some ingenuity and forethought, the stress can be tamed. ■ — Metro Creative
