finding balance in a tech-driven world
It is impossible to dispute the many ways technology has positively affected the world. Tech has made interacting and collaborating with people from all corners of the planet as convenient as conversing with a next door neighbor.
Technology also has changed the face of education, making it possible for students from all walks of life to easily access a wealth of information at the click of a button.
For all of its many attributes, technology has its drawbacks as well. One of the notable detriments is the “always on” reality of tech, as well as the ability to become addicted to such instant gratification. Few adults and children can spend more than a few minutes without checking their devices.
According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, on average people are online 24 hours a week, twice as long as 10 years ago. One in five
adults spends as much as 40 hours a week online. According to Common Sense Media, teens spend an average of nine hours a day online, compared to about six hours for kids between the ages of eight and 12 and 50 minutes for children eight years old and younger.
Technology also has blurred the lines that distinguish work and personal time. Gone are the days of leaving the office behind when the workday ends in early evening. Today’s workers can take work home, work remotely and even check work emails or put in some hours while on vacation. Children, too, can pay a price as a result of engaging with technology. For example,
various studies indicate more than half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online.
These tips may help adults and children regain control and find balance in a tech-driven world.
• Set strict usage times. According to Net Nanny, a technology and internet watchdog site, being plugged into devices, on an almost continual basis, directly affects the brain by keeping it in a state of constant stimulation. This can make it difficult for the brain to get the downtime it
4Rent.ca October 7–21, 2023 6 TECH
needs to recharge. Limit hours of screen time, and wind down at least an hour or so before bed.
• Put devices on silent. If you or your children cannot resist the lure of devices, set them on silent or put them out of sight and out of reach at key times during the day.
• Beef up in-person socialization. Instead of texting or emailing, speak with friends, family and coworkers in person.
• Increase exercise. Time spent outdoors away from computers or
other devices can be beneficial to the mind and body.
• Find alternative solutions. Rather than running an internet search every time you have a question, look up answers in a book, travel to learn about new things, experience new hobbies, and immerse yourself in the physical world with renewed vigor.
Tech has changed the world, but it doesn’t have to consume people’s daily lives. With some mindfulness, individuals can find the right balance. ■

giving back and giving thanks this Thanksgiving
Celebrated by Canadians on the second Monday in October, Thanksgiving is a day to reflect on everything we are thankful for. The word “Thanksgiving” generally conjures up the image of a family sitting around a dinner table about to partake in a traditional dinner of turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, green beans and pumpkin pie.
While this is still the norm in many households, over time, new traditions are springing up. For example, some families may swap the turkey for an equally savoury, meatless option, while others may choose to prepare a meal from their home country. And for those whose families live far away, there is “Friendsgiving.”
Friendsgiving, or Friends Thanksgiving in its longer form, refers to the gathering of friends for a
Thanksgiving dinner. Widely popular among early career professionals and university and college students who can’t travel home to be with their families, Friendsgiving is slowly gaining traction among other demographics.
Sharing with those in need on this holiday is another trend that is on the rise. In addition to enjoying a meal together, many families and friend groups are now adding giving back to the menu.
There are many ways to give back. Collecting non-perishable food items for a local food bank and serving at local food shelters are some examples of simple yet impactful ways to give back to your community. Giving back to the global community is another way families and friends groups can make the world a better place.
If you are having trouble deciding which cause to support, consider giving to a charity like Beautiful World Canada, which specializes in providing universal access to education. While public education is free in our country, millions of children around the world will never see the inside of a classroom. That’s why this organization is working to change this.
Founded in 2011, the not-forprofit organization works with local partners to provide comprehensive secondary and postsecondary scholarships to women and girls in Uganda, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Ethiopia. Learn how you and your family or friends can give the gift of education this Thanksgiving at beautifulworldcanada.org. ■

12 steps to financial organization
set up
1. Gather all your paperwork. Create a file folder for each of the following:
• Chequing accounts
• Savings accounts
• Retirement accounts
• Investment accounts
• Credit card accounts
• Loans
• Personal lines of credit
• Mortgage
• Insurance: life, disability, health, critical illness, home, car
• Tax returns
• Estate: wills and powers of attorney
2. Welcome to 21st century banking
If you don’t already have it, set up telephone or internet banking for your accounts.
3. Reduce fees by setting up a buffer
If you can afford it, transfer $1,000 float to your chequing account (pre-
tend it isn’t there) and use that to minimize your banking costs.
4. Save automatically
Create an auto-debit from your chequing account to a savings account that will not be touched. Most people won’t put money into a savings account on a regular basis, opting to wait for a tax-refund or bonus before setting aside some money for the future. Establish an automatic savings deposit every month and your nest egg will accumulate faster than you think.
5. Create a monthly bill summary
List your bills in the date order they need to be paid to prevent you from missing a bill. If you have bills that are paid automatically from your account, write an “A” beside these bills and remember to deduct them from your spending journal at bill payment time each month.
6. Set up your “in-baskets”
Create an in-basket containing two folders for your bills. Label the first folder “1-15” and the other
“16-31.” When a bill comes in, look at the due date and file the bill in the appropriate folder. Recycle all the marketing materials in the envelope. Create a second in-basket with three folders labelled “bank statements,” “bills paid” and “tax receipts.”
weekly
7. Make a date with your money
On the 12th and 28th of each month, set aside the time in your schedule — you’ll need about 30 minutes — to pay your bills.
Always pay your bills in one place that is equipped with your bill paying system, spending journal, envelopes, stamps, pens, pencils, a calculator, tape, a stapler and return address labels and recycling bin.
When you pay a bill, write the cheque or transaction number, amount paid, and the date you paid it on the bill. Put the paid bill in your “bills paid” file. Deduct the amount you’ve spent from your spending

journal. If a bill has not been paid in full (tax bills are paid over several months, for example) put it back in your bills folder so you don’t forget it.
monthly
8. Reconcile your bank statements
When your bank statements come in, put them in your in-box folder. Make a date when all your
statements are in (it’ll depend on when you receive them) to:
Review your statements to make sure there are no mistakes.
Reconcile your spending register; clearly mark the cheques that have been returned to you and highlight the ones in your spending register that haven’t yet cleared the bank. A cheque that is taking a long time clearing the bank can lull you into
thinking you have more money than you do. Go back at least a month to make sure all previous cheques have cleared.
Talk about anything unusual.
quarterly
9. File
Once a quarter, file all your paperwork to keep your system current.
10. Talk
Have dinner with your business partner and talk about the bumps, your goals and how you’re doing.
annually
11. Re-vamp your budget
Review your budget using last year’s credit card statements and bank statements to see what you actually spent. If you spent more on a particular category, make sure you know why, or look for ways to cut back.
12. Clean up
Go through your files at the end of each year and throw out bills and receipts no longer needed for auditing/budgeting purposes. ■ October

how to manage relocating
Moving can be a considerable undertaking. While working professionals who are single or married with no children may find it easier to move than those with families, it’s fair to say that anyone who is moving in the near future has some significant work ahead of them.
In its Job Relocation Survey, the moving company Allied Van Lines found that people move for a variety of reasons. Fifty percent of the 3,500 respondents indicated they relocated for career advancement or money, and many more indi-
cated they relocated because of a job transfer (12 percent), their companies moved (9 percent) and to be closer to family/relationships (8 percent).
Regardless of what’s motivating a person to relocate, and whether or not they’re relocating on their own or uprooting their families, various strategies can make a forthcoming move go more smoothly.
• Inquire about relocation assistance. The Allied survey found that 63 percent of companies offered relocation packages. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for
those moving to different parts of the country. Asking about relocation expenses before being offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates.
• Ask what relocation packages cover. Relocation packages vary from company to company. The Allied Survey found that 54 percent of companies that offered such packages covered moving expenses, while 21 percent gave new hires a lump sum of money to use as they deemed necessary.
4Rent.ca October 7–21, 2023 20 INFO YOU CAN USE
for a new job
One in five companies even sponsored trips to search for homes. Those who are offered relocation packages should get the specifics so they can start creating moving budgets.
• Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. People who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from cancelling utilities to
changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process.
• Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Individuals who rent their first homes upon relocating can
remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful.
Relocating for a job can be exciting and stressful. But there are ways to make moving go smoothly. ■

small steps toward a plant-based diet
One of the best ways to transition to a plantbased diet is to incorporate more mushrooms into your meals. These veggies are extremely healthy for you and they pack a flavourful punch.
Adding four to five mediumsized mushrooms to your diet provides important vitamins and minerals with only 14 calories, virtually no fat and one gram of fibre. Mushrooms contain B-complex vitamins such as niacin and riboflavin that help to breakdown nutrients for your body to use, as well as minerals such as selenium, copper and potassium.
These minerals are necessary for the proper function of the human body and play different roles, from
making healthy red blood cells to protecting body cells. Mushrooms are also the only vegetable in the produce section with natural vitamin D, which plays an important role in bone health.
Mixing mushrooms into your favourite meals is an easy way to start eating healthier. Even if you or someone in your family is a selfproclaimed picky eater, mushrooms can easily be added to almost any dish for a boost of nutrients and flavour. Their high water content allows them to take on flavours, making them easy to blend into any recipe. In addition, they are high in umami, a “meaty” flavour that adds a depth and richness to recipes.
Some easy ways to add more mushrooms and nutrients into your diet:
• Mix one cup finely diced mushrooms (white mushrooms, portabella, crimini or button for a mild flavour) into any meal where you are using ground meat. Think meatloaf, tacos, pasta sauce, burgers, etc. Benefit: Reduced calories per serving.
• Include sliced mushrooms in your soups, stir-fries, casseroles, etc. They will take on the flavour of the dish and add a richness. Think crimini mushrooms for chicken noodle or beef barley soup, enoki or shiitake mushrooms for Asian soups or stir-fries. Benefit: three extra grams of fibre.
• Include sliced crimini or shiitake mushrooms into risotto or other rice dishes. Benefit: one additional serving of vegetables. ■

moving checklist
BY CHUCK RESNICK
June 30 is the busiest moving day of the year. We recommend the following 15-point checklist that will help you complete your move in a stress free way.
■ Double-check all closets, drawers, shelves, attic and garage to ensure they are empty.
■ Carry all important documents, money and jewelry with you.
■ Pack toys, games or special items for the kids to keep them busy during the move.
■ Remember to pack a box of basics that you may need on move-in day (tools, paper products, all-purpose household cleaners, etc.). Be sure to have it loaded last so that it will be first off at your new home.
■ Don't pack paint, bottles of bleach, gas cans or other inflammables. It is against federal law for movers to transport flammable and combustible materials.
■ Use strong boxes and containers that can be secured tightly. Purchase special boxes for dishes, wardrobe and other special items.
■ Pack audio-video equipment in their original boxes. Label cables and tighten transit screws, before removing cables take pictures of the back of the unit so you can hook everything back up the same way. If removing screws, tape them to the objects they are removed from.
■ Avoid loading more than 50 pounds into one box.
■ Label each box and indicate the following: (a) Which room it should go in (b) Whether it is fragile (c) If it should be loaded last so it will be unloaded first.
■ Cushion contents with packing material such as bubble wrap, newspaper or tissue. Save room by using towels and blankets to wrap fragile items.
■ Pack books tightly on end in small boxes. If musty smelling, sprinkle talcum powder between the pages and wrap the book before packing. Leave stored for a couple of months to eliminate the smell.
■ Have rugs and draperies cleaned before moving and leave them in wrappings for the move.
■ Pack medicines in a plastic zip lock bag or leakproof container.
■ Check the weather forecast for your move day, if it’s going to be hot be sure to have a cooler with lots of bottled water and sports drinks on ice.
■ Call your moving company the day before your move to get a contact number for the crew doing your move in case you need to contact them on route. Give your mover your cell phone number and be sure to fully charge your cell phone the night before your move day. ■

4 tips to manage a hybrid work environment
Before and during the years of the pandemic many of us experienced both traditional office workdays and remote work. Now, many companies are committing to allowing employees to split their hours between a centralized workplace and a home office – for good.
Here are four tips to help you hit your stride and make the most of hybrid work.
get to know your co-workers
One of the great benefits of being in the office is in-person interactions with co-workers. So, use inoffice time to hold important meetings and to check in with managers and direct reports. But also use the days you’re at the office to have the occasional office social, whether it’s lunch at a local restaurant or a quick drop-in happy hour – you’ll make the most of face-to-face time to become friends and allies.
make a go-bag
Having more than one workstation means you probably need to tote things like a laptop back and forth on your commute. Make inoffice mornings easier by creating a small go-bag of essentials you use every day that you can quickly tuck into your larger commuting
bag. It might include things like your favourite pen, go-to notebook and wired headphones for online meetings.
review your budget
Everything from the cost of gas or public transportation to buying lunch or an afternoon coffee can begin to add up on in-person workdays. In fact, while many Canadians enjoy the collaborative aspects of hybrid work, just over 20 per cent of people see commuting as expensive according to recent data from Aviva Canada. So, it’s smart to review your spending plan regularly

and adjust it to your hybrid routine. For instance, if one of the perks of heading into the office is going out for lunch with colleagues, see where else you can cut back to accommodate that treat.
watch your sleep schedule
One of the luxuries of working a few days from home means you save time on your commute. Just watch out for sleeping in extra on those days compared to your inoffice mornings. It’s widely understood that going to sleep and waking up at roughly the same times
each day and night will leave you feeling better and be less jarring on your system compared to switching up your routine every other day. Instead, use the extra commute time you save to savour your
morning coffee or do something else you enjoy.
