TECH

8

factors to consider before buying your next gadget

G

adgets are everywhere. Whether they’re devices like e-readers and smartphones or wearable fitness devices that help athletes track their performance, gadgets can be found anywhere and are used by people from all walks of life. The number of gadgets the average person has might surprise even the most devoted techie. According to Cisco’s annual visual networking index survey, the average person across the globe will own four connected devices by 2021. Projections are even higher in North America, where Cisco predicts the average person will own a whopping 13 connected devices in 2021. Consumers, clearly, are flocking to gadgets. But even the most wellconnected consumer might want to consider various factors before shopping online or visiting their local electronics retailer. • Compatibility: Many consumers crave connectivity with their gadgets. When all of your gadgets 4Rent.ca December 2–16, 2023

are compatible with one another, transferring and sharing files is seamless. While it’s not impossible to link devices that are not compatible, consumers who go that route may need to put in a little more effort, which takes more time. In addition, such consumers may end up spending more money on a device like a smart home hub to ensure all of their devices can be connected to one another. • Security: Security also must be a high priority for consumers as they shop for new gadgets. Any device that connects to the internet is vulnerable to hackers. When buying gadgets, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by a device’s capabilities and ignore its potential vulnerabilities altogether. Even manufacturers facing pressure to keep up in the rapidly evolving tech industry may overlook security as they rush a product to market. As a result, it’s the responsibility of the consumer to investigate security

features before buying a product. Contact the manufacturer, read product reviews online and determine what happens if or when there’s a security breach. Only after vetting a product’s security features and comparing those features to competitors’ offerings should consumers make a purchase decision. • Model year: While some techies might be excited to be an early adopter and purchase the first iteration of a given product, many consumers prefer to wait and buy second, third or fourth generation products. By avoiding first generation products, consumers can give manufacturers time to iron out those kinks that are often only discovered once a product hits the market. Considering a few factors before purchasing a new gadget can help consumers find exactly what they’re looking for with their next tech buy. ■ — Metro Creative

green gift ideas for the holidays

W

hile red and green are the typical Christmas colours, you can also add eco-friendly gifts this holiday season. Here are four green gifts that will warm the recipient’s heart.

green that grows

Christmas falls just after the Winter Solstice – the day of the year with the least amount of sunlight. And if it isn’t already covering the ground, we know that snow is on the way. Help brighten up the indoors by gifting a plant. A pilea, also known as a friend-

ship plant, is a great choice as it’s pet-friendly and easy to care for. Plus, they send up shoots that can be separated and shared.

Or premix the dry ingredients for your favourite cookie or brownie recipe and share in a decorative container.

get creative

repurpose treasures

Rather than buying something your recipient may not really want or need, give a gift from the heart by making them something. Tap into your personal creative side. If your hobby is stitching or painting, give the gift of art. Maybe you’re a budding chef. In that case, whip up a bulk batch of soup or chili and put it in freezable containers for a readymade meal.

The term regifting has a bad rap. To some it might mean getting rid of something not worth keeping. But rather than buying someone something new, you can find something in your home that you’ve previously enjoyed – say, a favourite book – and wrap it up with a little note explaining why it was so important to you that you wanted to share it.

share the wealth

A “green” gift that also supports the work of charities can be very meaningful for the recipient and the charity. For example, beekeeping kits for $60 and beehives for $100 from World Vision’s gift catalogue provide honey for families to use or to sell or trade in a sustainable small business to support themselves. The bees also pollinate vegetation to help the local ecosystem thrive. mental health support this holiday season

F

ew things fill the heart like the knowledge that someone else cares about how you’re feeling and doing. But many of us feel our stress and anxiety intensify during the holiday season. Some of us have experienced loss that is magnified this time of year, or we come to this season exhausted or dreading the busyness ahead. During this often pressure-filled time, how can we guard our own mental health, while looking out for others? Here are five suggestions:

check references on a prospective roomie:

it’s essential E

mployers check references, landlords check references, and if you’re considering someone as a roommate, you should check their references, too. A person can seem charming initially, then later on turn into a nightmare. Do your homework and avoid such situations. Have a rental application form that’s appropriate for your province. It will cover all the bases. Discuss how your potential roommate feels about overnight visitors, smoking, pets, sharing household chores, etc. Asking why they left their last place and how long they lived there is important. The application form will have a spot for references. Ask for references from their current employer, a previous landlord and at least one previous roommate. Tell them that

4Rent.ca

December 2–16, 2023

you will call these people to verify employment status and their previous housing history. By providing contact information for these references, the prospective roommate is giving you permission to contact them. Check your province’s privacy and human rights laws for what you are allowed to ask and what isn’t okay. When calling an employer, state that you are verifying the potential roommate’s employment status and character, not doing an employment check for another job. When calling a previous landlord, find out how long the person lived there, whether they paid their rent on time or if there were any other pertinent issues, and why they left. If this information doesn’t match what the person told you, you may need to clarify.

Previous roommates can be revealing. Ask how long they have known the person and how long they lived together. Then ask, “What did you like about living with __?” and “What didn’t you like about living with __?” Ask why they are no longer living together. If someone cannot provide any references or if none of their references are forthcoming, beware. You will be living with this person in close quarters, sharing a space and relying on them to fulfil their responsibilities. You need to have a reasonable comfort level with them – they will have access to all of your personal possessions and be privy to much of your private life. Your health, safety and peace of mind are at stake. Be selective. Communicate clearly and you will find the right match. ■ — Kathryn Kusyszyn

reduce exposure to harmful

V

olatile organic compounds are emitted by a vast array of products. The Environmental Protection Agency warns that VOCs consist of gases discharged from solids or liquids that produce shortand long-term health effects. VOCs are particularly troubling because their concentrations are consistently up to 10 times higher indoors than outdoors. Those who spend time inside of homes and businesses may be at risk from concentrated exposure to VOCs. Notable items that produce VOCs include treated woods, carpeting,

building materials, paints, waxes, fabrics, and varnishes. Since people are constantly breathing in air, and whatever is circulating within it, it’s important for individuals to be conscious of these common offenders. VOCs can be dangerous because they may cause everything from minor symptoms of headaches, nausea and stuffy noses to more serious conditions like nervous system problems and kidney and liver damage. Some VOCs are known to cause cancer in humans, warns the EPA. To reduce exposure to VOCs, homeowners are advised to take the following steps.

• Read product labels carefully for warnings against VOCs. Whenever possible, select products that do not emit VOCs. • Invest in alternative products, such as all-natural cleaning solutions. Many people find that common and safe items like vinegar, citrus oils and baking soda are as effective as chemical cleaners without the same harmful side effects. • Use an air purifier in conjunction with HVAC systems. Purchase an air purifier that specifically filters out odors and VOCs, which can help people with chemical sensitivities.

25

VOCs at home • Rely on natural ventilation when using products that have strong odors or are suspected of emitting VOCs. This can be as easy as opening windows and doors or doing work outside. • Use a shed rather than an attached garage to store gas cans, pesticides, paint thinners, and other odoriferous materials away from the home. Contact the municipal waste department to learn how to properly dispose of leftover chemical products. • Rethink flooring materials to include carpeting that is low VOC or alternatives such as washable rugs or hard flooring.

• Don’t forget to fill a home with plenty of live plants. A study from researchers at NASA found that certain indoor plants are effective at naturally purifying air. • Exercise caution with dry-cleaned clothes. Perchloroethylene is a chemical most widely used in dry cleaning. Air out dry-cleaned clothes before wearing them, particularly if they have strong chemical odors. Volatile organic compounds can be excreted through various items. Individual s who educate themselves can greatly reduce their exposure to these harmful compounds. ■

MOVERS

28

achieve moving zen BY CHUCK RESNICK

Moving your worldly possessions involves a lot of organization, and if there’s one thing professional movers understand, it’s to expect the unexpected. In fact, that’s a major reason why many people choose to hand over the task of moving to companies that do this every day.

S

ome do-it-yourself moves go well; others end up unnecessarily stressful because those completing the work don’t anticipate potential glitches. Checklists are great, but every single move is different – and nothing beats experience for transferring household and other goods quickly, safely and efficiently. For example, if you move in the winter and it’s a snowy, slushy day, how do you protect the floors from water or salt damage at both ends? What about getting large items around hard-to-manoeuvre corners without marking walls? What if someone gets hurt? Do you know how to pack delicate items such as lampshades and glassware to eliminate shifting and potential breakage during a long haul? What if the truck breaks down or gets into an accident halfway to your new home? Professional movers have resources to draw upon to anticipate and/or handle any number of unexpected happenings. Training is a great preventative measure – when you shop for a mover, find out if and how the drivers and moving people are trained. Ask whether they have a “Plan B” in case of vehicle problems, and what you can do to be as prepared as possible when the packing/moving begins. As tempting as a D-I-Y move may be, think through the conse-

quences. Are you prepared to deal with the possibility of friends or family members not showing up on moving day due to illness or hurt themselves trying to move heavy items? Do you have a backup plan for extra items in case you misjudge the size of moving vehicle you need? What about plants? Hazardous liquids? Items such as chain saws and lawnmowers with gas or grease on them? Large items like ladders? Of course, there are specialty items that require an unusual level of care – pianos, pool tables, grandfather clocks, artwork, antiques and the like. The money you think you’ll save by not hiring a professional mover may end up being spent on repairs if these large and valuable pieces are not handled correctly. Worse yet, irreplaceable items may be lost forever. And have you thought through unpacking at the other end? On your first night there, you will need

bedding, toiletries, towels and some kitchen items. Do you have a plan that includes being able to find those things easily and quickly? All of these considerations and more are covered in the training that Two Men and A Truck franchisees take part in at what we call Stick Men University in honour of the company logo. Among the many things they learn is how to maneuver, wrap, pack and load items from big-screen televisions to china cabinets filled with breakables. If you do decide to move yourself, on the Two Men and A Truck website, we provide moving tips, a moving checklist and even special things to consider for extremely large items. Give some thought to what might happen along the way and make contingency plans. And be realistic – hiring a professional mover can offer tremendous peaceof-mind and is money well spent. Visit twomen.ca to find a location near your rental home. ■

While large rental homes remain popular, many people are embracing the benefits of smaller residences. Tenants of small homes or apartments can still enjoy the benefits of larger spaces, they just need to equip rooms to perform double duty.

Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to house a laptop during the day.

Bringing work home means men and women will need a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoire-style desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors.

double duty both adults and children. Devote an entire wall to a closet or drawer system where toys can be stored out of sight when necessary. Storage ottomans can be used for extra seating while also providing somewhere for homeowners to stash stuffed animals or games for easy access. When choosing furniture, look for fabrics that are resistant to stains and modular pieces that can be moved around as necessary to create room for playing or entertaining.

living room/guest room

Entertaining guests is easier when there’s a dedicated space where visitors can feel at home. When furnishing a living room, keep the guest room in mind. A sofa that opens up to a bed or a convertible sectional can be a comfortable place for guests to lay their heads. Side tables provide guests with places to store their belongings, and an empty storage chest can house bed linens or guests’ clothing. ■ — Metro Creative
