inimalism is getting maximum attention these days, since this style of design no longer needs to have hard edges or be uncomfortable. The new approach celebrates nature and serenity without sacrificing warmth and comfort. Sharon Grech, Benjamin Moore colour marketing expert, shares her three tips on how to create a warm and inviting minimalist space in your home.
build on your base colours
Like all good design, minimalism starts with the basics. The first step to beautiful design is selecting

DECOR
your colour palette of two to three colours that you will use throughout your space. Warm neutrals like creams, beiges and greys will help create a timeless and subtle starting point that lets your décor shine. “Neutral paint colours like Thunder AF-68, White Heron OC-57 and even a muted rosy hue like the Colour of the Year 2020 First Light 2102-70 are ideal choices for an inviting minimal space,” says Grech.
add natural textures
The key to an inviting design is thoughtfully adding texture and layers. Natural materials and textures have a calming effect and add softness to minimal spaces. Complement your neutral base colours with woven rugs, wooden chairs, rattan furniture and plants to add depth and visual interest and create an inviting and serene look. Group accessories in neutral shades together – think antique whites, sunbleached beiges and stormy greys to create a harmonious look that is easy on the eyes.
do it yourself
Consistency of colours, textures and tones are essential when creating a warm and inviting minimal space. One way to achieve a consis-
tent look is to paint wooden furniture and cabinets to create a unified and complementary set of tones throughout your home. “Painting wooden furniture and cabinets is an approachable do-it-yourself project. There are two key elements to properly painting furniture: first, smooth out any uneven textures using sandpaper. Second, make sure you use a high-quality paint designed to minimize brushstrokes, like Advance interior paint from Benjamin Moore.” ■

body has a multitude of health and wellness benefits, from relieving stress and anxiety to increasing strength and flexibility. • Making choices to create a healthy work-life balance is another way to care for yourself and your wellbeing. Learn to set limits by saying no when work time demands are too high. Shorten your to-do list and delegate or cut any extra tasks. By setting limits and boundaries, you can improve your relationship with yourself and your loved ones.
• Winding down before bed is a great time to transform your daily skin routine into a self-care ritual. “When applying a serum or moisturizer, try using a facial roller to turn this nightly routine into a relaxing massage,” says Chanel Cruz, a Shoppers beauty pro. This simple step can help ease muscle tension, decrease puffiness, and stimulate blood flow. a realistic guide to
organic food I n a perfect world, chemicals would not be needed to produce any foods, all of which would be made in sustainable conditions and from all-natural ingredients. But even the most ecoconscious foodie routinely faces difficult decisions at the grocery store. The Organic Trade Association says organic food is the fastest-growing sector of the food industry, and organic food now accounts for more than 5 percent of total food sales. While many people understand the benefits to consuming organic produce, such foods tend to cost more, compromising shoppers’ budgets as a result. Making smart choices and getting the facts about organic food can help consumers make informed decisions.
smarter organic choices
According to the food and health resource the Environmental Working Group, certain fruits and vegetables are more likely to feature residual pesticides than others. They dub these foods the “Dirty Dozen,” which include strawberries, spinach, nectarines, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, pears, tomatoes, celery, potatoes, and sweet bell peppers. Shoppers who cannot afford strictly organic foods can opt for non-organic items that are less likely to contain residual pesticides.
fearing antibiotics
Many people are concerned about milk, meat and poultry treated with antibiotics. Organic foods are antibiotic-free. The Food and Drug Administration has strict guidelines
4Rent.ca
in place to phase out the use of antibiotics in food animals to enhance growth or improve feed efficiency. They’re also requiring farmers to select strains of microbials that are less medically important to humans who would need them to treat disease. This means that conventional milk, meat and poultry may contain less antibiotics than consumers know.
To be “organic,” foods produced and sold in the United States and Canada must be shown to conserve natural resources and be devoid of GMOs organic and pesticides
To be “organic,” foods produced and sold in the United States and Canada must be shown to conserve natural resources and be devoid of GMOs, among other requirements. However, USDA organic certification allows for natural substances, such as pheromones, vaccines for animals and a limited number of natural pesticides. Also, a 2011 survey by the USDA showed 39 percent of 571 organic samples were found to have pesticide residues, but well below tolerance levels set by the EPA. Therefore, pesticide-free and organic are not exclusive. Organic foods are seen as a healthy alternative to foods that do not fall into this category. While there are many positive reasons to go organic, including conventional foods in one’s diet is not necessarily unhealthy. ■ — Metro Creative

But as January 1 drifts further into the rear-view mirror, it can be easy to settle into old habits and forget about the resolutions and goals established at the turn of the calendar. In addition to working hard, men and women who want to realize their goals in the year ahead can take several steps to increase their chances of being successful.

be specific in regard to planning
Being specific when choosing goals is important, but it’s equally important to be as specific as possible in regard to developing a plan to realize those goals. Before embarking on a journey to realize your goals, figure out how you’re going to achieve them. Create a new daily or weekly schedule that allots time to realize your goals, seeking input from loved ones whose lives may be affected by your new schedule.

organize and declutter
C
lutter can be a major source of stress that affects how individuals feel about their spaces. Psychology Today indicates messy homes and work spaces can contribute to feelings of helplessness, anxiety and overwhelming stress. Clutter bombards the mind with excessive stimuli, makes it more difficult to relax and can constantly signal to the brain that work is never done. Tackling messes, no matter where they are lurking is not a one-time
4Rent.ca
project. Much like losing weight and getting healthy, clearing a home of clutter requires dedication and lifestyle changes. With these organizational tips and tricks, anyone can work through their home roomby-room and conquer clutter.
find a place for everything
Clutter creeps up as people accumulate possessions over the years. Over time, failure to regularly go through belongings and thin the herd can lead to the accumulation
December 30, 2023–January 27, 2024
of clutter. But clutter also can accumulate if people fail to find a place to put items. Racks for garages, organizational systems for closets and furniture with storage capacity, such as storage ottomans, are some storage solutions that can help people find a place for their possessions.
utilize vertical space when possible
Getting items up and off the floor can maximize square footage in a home. Bookshelves, hanging wall
25
room-by-room shelves, hooks, cabinetry, built-ins, and other storage solutions that rely on walls and ceilings are simple and effective storage solutions. Unused space behind cabinet or closet doors are some additional places to store belongings. Hang razors or toothbrushes on medicine cabinet walls and curling irons and other hair tools on the interior of cabinet doors in bathrooms.
create a coding system
Home offices can be some of the more disorganized rooms in a
house simply due to the volume of electronics and paperwork within them. HGTV suggests using a colour-coded system for important files to keep them organized. Label important items, whether they’re paper or digital files, in accordance with your system.
put it away
When you finish using an item, return it to its storage location. This eliminates piles of belongings strewn around the house - and hunting and pecking for missing
HOME
things. If you can’t put it away immediately, have a few baskets on hand labeled for the different rooms in the house. Pop the items in the requisite baskets and then routinely take each basket around the house to return the items. Investing in custom cabinetry and organizational systems also can help people organize their belongings. Tackle rooms such as the garage, basements, bedroom closets, and pantries, or those areas that tend to accumulate clutter the fastest. ■ — Metro Creative

oliday preparations such as tree trimming, present wrapping and hanging lights help get us in the holiday spirit and are lots of fun. But thoughtful packing of seasonal decorations and materials at the end of the holidays for the next year, can keep the fun in what is for some, a stressful time. In other words, it pays to plan, even 12 months ahead. Careful packing and organization prevents damage and breakage, and ensures you can find everything next year. It is worth taking the extra time to organize and preserve your decorations for next year. Here are some tips from TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® to keep in mind while packing away holiday decorations:
delicate items
• Wrap breakables in paper or bubble wrap. Do not use newspaper - the print may wear off on ornaments. Use tissue or packing paper. Instead of throwing away used paper or junk mail, run it through a paper shredder, it makes great packing filler. • Decorations that contain photographs or food should be sealed in an air tight bag to keep them safe. Sealing photos preserves them and the scent from any food item will attract insects or mice where ever they are stored. • Boxes with dividers are best to pack ornaments in. There are
4Rent.ca
cardboard boxes made especially for fragile items. They come with adjustable inserts that forms individual cells for delicate items. These “Dish Pack” boxes are very popular at all our TWO MEN AND A TRUCK branches • Keep extra hangers, hooks and ornament parts in a labeled bag or box.
lights
• To prevent tangles, wrap lights around empty gift wrapping paper tubes. • Leave the plug accessible by taping the ends of the light strands to the end of the tube. Next year you can quickly test the lights before unwinding them. • Store coloured lights in a dark place to prevent fading –- especially blues, greens and purples.
wrapping paper
• Hanging garment bags provides good storage for wrapping paper rolls. Use outside pockets for gift tags, cards and tissue paper. • To protect used rolls of paper, cut an empty wrapping paper tube from end to end and slide it over the roll. • Ribbons and bows can be saved and reused, pack loosely so they keep their shape.
some other considerations
• Wrap holiday candles individually in cellophane and store in
a cool place so they do not melt together. • Pack an “open first” box. Place the decorations you use first in here with essentials such as extension cords. • Use a “Wardrobe Box” to hang and store seasonal clothing that you only wear twice a year like that special snowman sweater from your mother-in-law or that flashing Christmas tie. This way you can find it, wear it, and store it away on a hanger easily. • If you haven’t used a decoration in a few years donate it. If it is damaged, get rid of it. • Take special care if you are storing your items in a damp area like your basement. Don’t store boxes near sources of heat and moisture. • The most important tip is to label every box. The more detailed the description, the easier it will be to find things. Use different colours to distinguish different holidays. For example, use orange for Halloween, brown for Thanksgiving, and red or green for Christmas. • Take a digital photo of special care items like snow globes or wreaths, print them off on regular paper and tape the photo to the outside of the box as an easy description of what’s inside. All Two Men and a Truck branches in Canada offers a variety of storage boxes and packing supplies suitable to store all your decorative treasures. Visit www.twomen.ca for a location near you. ■

how to stick to your
new year’s resolution this year
S
eeing any New Year’s resolution through to completion is tough for many of us, but it’s a good way to push yourself towards important goals. Whatever your resolution is this year, here are a few tips to help you stay on track:
make a plan
Creating a realistic step-by-step action plan makes it easier to pursue your goal when the going gets tough. If you’re quitting smoking, for example, decide on the date of your last cigarette and choose tools and methods to manage cravings. Include your reasons for quitting to come back to for motivation. Plan out how you’ll avoid situations that will make you want to smoke again and come up with ideas of what you’ll do instead of reaching for a cigarette – maybe brushing your teeth or going for a brisk walk – so you don’t have to come up with an alternative action on the spot.

ask for accountability and support
Tell someone about your goal and how you plan to achieve it. If you want to work out more often, you can enlist a gym buddy or send them a photo of every session you complete. If you’re quitting cigarettes, you can ask someone to remind you why you’re stopping or to help distract you from cravings. Having someone to cheer you on and be proud of your accomplishments can go a long way to help you move any goal along. This support might look different for everyone. It could come from a friend, family member or a health professional like a counsellor or quit coach.
try multiple methods
There probably isn’t one right way to achieve your goal, so why not try a few strategies at once? A combination of tools and support is actually proven to increase the chances of quitting smoking for
December 30, 2023–January 27, 2024
good. Health Canada says quit aids like nicotine replacement gum and/ or prescription medication alongside counselling can double your chances of triumph.
know that every step is a success
If you’re like most people, you may not be able to stick to your resolution without a few hiccups the first time you try. But every step you take towards your goal is more experience under your belt and something worth being proud of. Learn from your slip ups to plan your next attempt. When it comes to smoking, it’s common to need a few tries to quit. And that’s okay, it’s continuing to try that will get you there in the end. If your resolution is to quit smoking, know that it’s possible and that there are plenty of free quit-support services in communities across the country. You can find more information and advice from real people and their success stories at canada.ca/quit-smoking. ■ — News Canada
